The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the presence of live interior plants or window views of exterior green spaces on employee job satisfaction. A survey was administered through an online database. The survey included questions regarding physical work environment, the presence or absence of live interior plants, windows, exterior green spaces, environmental preferences, job satisfaction, and demographical information. About 600 office workers from Texas and the Midwest responded to the on-line workplace environment survey. Data were analyzed to compare levels of job satisfaction of employees that worked in office spaces that included live interior plants or window views of exterior green spaces and employees that worked in office environments without live plants or window views. Demographic information collected allowed controlling for salary, occupational level, educational level, age group, gender, and ethnicity. This research data can be particularly useful in urban planning, commercial property design and to encourage the incorporation of plants and green spaces in interior and exterior development projects.

The interior of a planetary nebula (PN) is expected to be filled with shocked fast wind from the central star. This hot gas plays the most important role in the dynamical evolution of the PN; however, its physical conditions are not well-known because useful X-ray and far-UV observations were not available until the advent of Chandra, XMM-Newton, and FUSE. This paper reviews X-ray observations of the hot gas in PN interiors and far-UV observations of the interfaces between the hot gas and the dense nebular shells.

This article investigates contemporary perceptions of church space in the border town of ‘s Hertogenbosch in the aftermath of the Peace of Westphalia. Through a close reading of two chorographies, the study sheds light on ways in which historians can try to grasp contemporary views on what mattered in a church interior in the contested border areas of the Generality Lands, regions in the Dutch Republic, where the Calvinist political elite remained a minority. The study alerts us to the temporality of changes to church interiors and its embeddedness in local and regional circumstances.

Virtual Reality is a computer generated scenario that simulates a realistic experience. Current popular online maps majorly provide two-dimensional upper views of buildings. It becomes difficult to visualize the interiors of a place. Indoor navigation using VR technology addresses the problem of visualizing the interior infrastructure of huge complex buildings like stadium. This paper ‘Indoor Navigation in Stadium using Virtual Reality’ aims to provide highly realistic and immersive experience by incorporating an app that uses 360 degree images to serve the purpose. The paper explains how WebVR technology can be used effectively in order to provide a three dimensional view of the stadium with navigation functionalities to the users.

Transforming the first floor of a 1950s building at Sveavägen, Stockholm, this project aims to redefine the traditional cinema. This is not a perfect quiet black box, but a place for sharing, experiencing and discussing film. A cinema for independent films, short films, documentaries and film festivals, but perhaps also presentations and lectures. A flexible building that can open up, or close down, depending on the event. A cinema where one can sit down for a brief movement with a coffee, or spend an evening at the big screen.

Drawing from ongoing revitalization initiatives in Richmond, Virginia, this adaptive reuse project creates a structured dialogue between public and private expression to create a more immersive gallery experience for viewer and practitioner. The gallery experience is twofold; traditional object-based display and nontraditional process-based display. Preservation of the historic fabric of the existing Handcraft building at 1501 Roseneath is integrated with the transformative potential of introducing voyeuristic opportunities in creating a community arts center. Notions of voyeurism will center around ideas of visual connection and physical separation. This project questions if tactics of voyeurism, which inherently create physical barriers, can facilitate interaction and encourage co-creation in a creative setting. Structured moments of intimacy and control are accomplished through presented and found views of movement, object, and process. These moments of intimacy and control create a conceptual reciprocity which guides the design of this project. Ultimately, the redesign creates a dialogue between the process of making and the final product/object by facilitating interaction between the viewer and practitioner through different points of the creative process. The project moves away from exploiting the site’s formal, historical, and contextual components and encourages the audience member to engage with the maker through a corporeal, experiential encounter. The environment becomes a catalyst for cross-disciplinary creativity on an individual, group, and community level. The development of spaces that engage the creative mind and foster collaborative growth will serve the Richmond arts community and can act as an icon for successful urban transformation.

Explores some of the most persistent and powerful images of migrant arrival and settlement from the early 20th century connected to Jewish districts in the East End of London and the Lower East Side of Manhattan. These visual representations incorporate varying degrees of popular journalism, social reportage, and social survey methodology. Each of these visual forms acquire a new intensity with the later 19th- and early 20th-century mass migrations as well as the attendant anti-immigrant campaigns which followed. This chapter investigates the mostly anonymous drawings and photographs which accompany George R. Sims panoramic survey of London (Living London, 1902) to show one set of observations and audience expectations; Jacob Epstein’s illustrations for a parallel account of New York (Hutchins Hapgood’s The Spirit of the Ghetto, 1902) suggest an alternative, more engaged approach.

The quality of the environment is closely related to the control and the availability of natural lighting and possible views. In the field of yachting, however, the design solution of the hulls and the environments often makes this relations especially critical the availability of natural light and views inside the boat. Anyway, the demands of representation and sociality required, needs the introduction of new systems of windows, terraces and new layouts, to relate the interior of the boats with the deck, attributing new meanings within the social idea of “going into the sea". This is how the small portholes, with the original function of air environments, aspire to become large openings for dialogue with the sky and sea. However, the unstable horizon of the boat, and the dynamic changing nature of views and natural lighting, generate very difficult conditions about the control of the factors which can help to determine the good size of the domestic interiors and their relationship with the environment. The paper presents the results of a research on the topic of visual pleasantness in yachting, conducted at the Department of Architecture, University "G. D'Annunzio "of Chieti-Pescara (Italy). The research has developed a system of guidelines for the aware-design of the openings to the outside in the nautical living spaces, taking into account the constraints imposed by the marine environment, activities and postures of users, as well as natural lighting and views, according with the knowledge that the control of these factors contribute to the overall quality of the project.

In her study of law schools in the US, sociologist Wendy Leo Moore identifies such academic institutions as hegemonic white spaces. Drawing upon the racist history of the legal system and the legal profession in the US, she shows that law schools are complicit in upholding white supremacist ideologies. In her study, Moore also noted the role that the architecture of law schools played in reproducing racism. In her analysis, she cites classroom seating layouts, symbolism in interior design, and alienating circulation through the building. Scholars of race and space offer powerful theoretical frameworks for understanding space’s role in perpetuating, inflicting, and creating racialized harms. But most do so by considering urban scales of space (e.g. the role of redlining or urban renewal). What is unique about Moore’s study of white spaces is her attention to architectural scales of space. In an effort to deepen this thread of inquiry, in this paper, the authors investigate how members of a university communityexperience white and racist spaces of a predominantly white campus. The authors conducted twenty participant-led go-alongs where participants guide walks through the campus spaces they navigate. Participants reported ways architectural elements such as material, spatial hierarchy, threshold, and framed views perpetuate white supremacy. This research aims to document ways that members of campus communities experience white supremacist architecture. The findings of this project contribute to theorizing ways white supremacy is reproduced at architectural scales of space.

By means of the bachelor proof, students of interior architecture of the University of Antwerp (Faculty of Design Sciences) are stimulated to design interiors for real-life public libraries in view of particular societal challenges. During three subsequent years the teaching staff elaborated a set of learning objectives and activities that jointly form a competence-based learning process focussed on the development of the societal awareness of design students. In this paper we report on the intermediate experiences of the teachning staff and the students as indicated by a set of mainly qualitative data. In short it concerns four lessons learned relating to the over- and underestimation of (i) disciplinary filters, (ii) comfort-zones, (iii) motivating complexities and (iv) copy-cat behavior.

Cased telescoped ammunition and associated cannon is a proven disruptive technology in medium calibre weapons, allowing increased lethality in a compact, multi role weapon system. From new ammunition development to support of serial production, an internal ballistics model is key to highlight design margins, support design improvement and performance increase. The architecture of the cannon and the ammunition result in a very specific internal ballistics mechanism which makes standard models unsuitable. This paper will detail the different steps of the internal ballistics cycle of the 40 mm cased telescoped ammunition and explain how each steps were studied from both theoretical and experimental point of view and aggregated to achieve the internal ballistics model of the CT cartridge.

Understanding the needs and expectations of the intended users of a designed environment is recognized as one of the essential factors that influence the decision-making process in an interior design project. This situation is also reflected in interior design education, where students conventionally design for hypothetical clients and users. This study explores the contribution of a new user-focused and scenario-based design studio modal to students’ approach to successive stages of design processes, learning outcomes, and engagement to the project course during an online education period. Within the scope of the study, second-year interior design students were assigned to real artists and product designers as clients for a workshop for creative production- showroom project. The students had to communicate with their clients, do research and integrate the information they have collected into their design proposals. The paper concludes with an evaluation of the proposed model from students’ view. It is believed that the approach proposed and applied within the scope of the study has the potential to present a different perspective in interior design studio courses.

This paper introduces a novel computational method for mapping indoor luminance values to the facade of an open workplace to improve its daylight performance. 180-degree fisheye renderings from different locations, view positions, and times of the year are created. These renderings are then transformed from two-dimensional (2D) images into three-dimensional (3D) hemispheres. High luminance values are filtered and projected from the hemisphere to the facade design. This framework will highlight the areas of the facade that allow too much light penetration into the interior environment. This study introduces a flexible framework that allows for an occupant-centric lighting analysis to compute multiple design parameters and synthesize results based on luminance values mapped on the facade design for localized performance optimization to improve facade performance.

Andersen, Gisle, Christine Merk, Marie L. Ljones und Mikael P. Johannessen. Interim report on public perceptions of marine CDR. OceanNets, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.3289/oceannets_d3.4.

This deliverable synthesizes the results on public perceptions of marine CDR methods from the first two years of OceanNETs. The purpose is to inform the other work packages in OceanNETs and stakeholders about our results in a timely and brief manner about the ways members of the public view marine CDR specifically but also in the broader context of net-zero targets and climate policy. The deliverable summarises results of two studies: (1) focus groups held in Germany and Norway that covered ocean fertilization, ocean alkalinity enhancement, artificial upwelling and blue carbon management and (2) a deliberative survey in Norway that covered ocean alkalinity enhancement, macroalgae farming with BECCS or biomass sinking and land-based BECCS and enhanced weathering as terrestrial approaches for comparison. Participants in both studies emphasise the importance of reducing emissions and changing consumptions patterns. They hardly discuss the need to remove CO2 from the atmosphere to reach the Paris climate goal and the concept of negative emissions seems difficult for them to engage with. Among the methods, participants prefer ecosystem-based approaches like mangrove or seagrass restoration over other methods like alkalinity enhancement or ocean fertilization. Participants are concerned about the actual feasibility of deployment at a relevant removal scale and for a longer period. Connected to this are concerns about the controllability of the deployment and the methods’ impact, like difficulties to control negative environmental effects from biomass sinking at the seafloor. They also question the buildup of additional infrastructure or additional interventions into nature on top of already existing human interference. The opportunity to deliberate the methods increases participants’ certainty about their assessment but only slightly changes the direction of the assessment.

Nicholson, Claire, Jonathan Wastling, Peter Gregory und Paul Nunn. FSA Science Council Working Group 6 Food Safety and Net Zero Carbon July 2022 Interim Report. Food Standards Agency, Juli 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.46756/sac.fsa.vxz377.

The UK has a legal commitment to reach net zero carbon (NZC) emissions by 2050. This is a topic that has recently been building momentum, with clean growth being one of the four Grand Challenges set out by the UK Government. The ways we grow, process and transport food are major contributors to climate change, accounting for more than a quarter of all greenhouse gas emissions. Reducing this will require substantial changes in agriculture, manufacturing, and transport. Consequently, the Science Council and FSA Chief Scientific Adviser (CSA) agreed that a deeper understanding of the potential implications of achieving net zero on food systems, together with identification of areas of uncertainty, would be of considerable value to FSA in pre-empting future policy and evidence needs in this area. In early discussions to scope the work required, Defra indicated to the FSA Science Council Secretariat that there are many new developments and changes to activity in primary production aimed at achieving net zero. The Science Council agreed, therefore, to concentrate its first investigations on changes expected in primary food production. Primary production is the production of chemical energy in organic forms by living organisms. The main source of this energy is sunlight. For the purposes of this review, primary food production includes the growing and harvesting of plants as food for humans or feed for animals, and the rearing and slaughter of animals including livestock, fish and a wide variety of aquatic and marine organisms. A Science Council Working Group 6 (WG6) began work in summer 2021, led by Science Council members Mrs Claire Nicholson (WG6 Chair) and Prof Jonathan Wastling (WG6 Deputy Chair). The brief for WG6 is to investigate the potential food safety implications arising from changes to primary food production practices and technologies that reduce carbon emissions in the next 10 years. The work programme (described in this report) covers 4 phases, with phases 1 and 2 now complete. The work so far has drawn diverse, wide-ranging, sometimes slightly conflicting, views and opinions from across academia, the FSA, Defra, industry bodies and individual food producers. This interim report summarises: The work undertaken to date (phases 1 and 2) What has been learnt including changes to practice already underway or imminent Issues arising from the changes that the FSA should be aware of Further work planned by WG6 to understand the nature of the risks in more depth (phases 3 and 4) The Science Council aims to complete its investigations by the end of 2022 and present its findings to the FSA Board as soon as possible afterwards.

UK, Ipsos. Survey of public attitudes towards precision breeding. Food Standards Agency, Oktober 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.46756/sci.fsa.ouv127.

The Genetic Technology (Precision Breeding) Bill is currently going through Parliament. Although this bill is ‘England only’ and food and feed safety and hygiene is a devolved issue, the Food Standards Agency (FSA) will introduce a separate regulatory framework for precision bred organisms (PBOs), should the Bill become law. The FSA will also work with stakeholders in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland to ensure consumers’ interests are protected in relation to PBOs. The FSA / Food Standard Scotland (FSS) is science and evidence led. In August 2022, the FSA and FSS commissioned Ipsos UK to conduct a two-phase social research project on precision breeding. Phase One, now complete, involved a survey of 4,177 UK residents with robust samples in each UK nation to allow comparisons between and within nations. Phase Two, scheduled to start in September 2022 and report in early 2023, will comprise a series of Citizens’ Forums in England, Wales and Northern Ireland(footnote 1). The overall aims of this project are to: explore consumer attitudes towards precision breeding gather consumer views on the FSA’s proposed regulatory framework understand consumer information needs inform how to communicate with consumers about precision breeding. This document presents interim findings for this project, reporting descriptive data from Phase One. Phase One’s core aims were to provide a snapshot of consumers’ awareness and self-assessed knowledge of precision breeding, its perceived acceptability, risks and benefits, and consumer appetite for information about this production method. These data show that awareness of precision breeding is very low, something which should be borne in mind when considering these findings. While these data reveal that there is a general openness to trying precision bred foods across the UK, with more people anticipating benefits than disbenefits from the use of precision breeding, there is a large degree of uncertainty about what impact precision bred foods may have on the different parts of the food system. This is reflected in the relatively large proportions of people taking a neutral stance or indicating they do not know enough to answer survey questions and in the strong appetite expressed for information about precision breeding to be provided. The next phase of this project will be essential for the FSA’s ability to interpret these findings’ implications, and to understand what is informing consumers’ views. The purpose of Phase One has always been to let the FSA know ‘what’ consumers think about precision breeding; Phase Two’s purpose is to build our understanding ‘why’ they think it. This will allow the FSA to develop a more nuanced understanding of consumers’ needs and incorporate this into the design of the future regulatory framework and any engagement with consumers on precision breeding. FSS will be carrying out further research in Scotland.
