In addition to novelty and relevance, interdisciplinarity seems to be an imperative predicate in the scientific works carried out in Indonesia. Unfortunately, research on the interdisciplinarity itself, particularly from the perspective of philosophy of science, either descriptive or normative, i.e., what and how interdisciplinary has been (and should be) done is still a desideratum. Through database and normative-philosophical analysis, this article shows that most of the interdisciplinary works hitherto carried out are either additive or interpretative/take-over in nature. Such works would be bad scientific practices. Good interdisciplinary works presuppose the existence of interdisciplinary material objects and their formal ones. These normative requirements, however, lead to a dilemma which should be faced by those who work interdisciplinarily.

Abstract: In the debate on the interdisciplinary, which has been increasing in Brazil, the idea that it is a process of integration between disciplines still dominates. This integration must be gradual and, therefore, may even provide a fusion of the disciplines involved. In that perspective, the interdisciplinary relations depend primarily on methodological procedures are feasible through the efforts of teachers and researchers who believe in the interdisciplinary approach. This communication shows that the interdisciplinary behavior does depend neither on methodological procedures nor on the efforts of teachers and researchers because it stems from historical issues. From this premise we must go to achieve an understanding of interdisciplinary that will overcome the fragmentation of knowledge. This fragmentation arises from the social division of labor imposed by the capitalist mode of production. Therefore, the analysis of the interdisciplinary relationship can not do without the examination of the historical process that divides the work.

The future of theatre history is interdisciplinary. The inevitable question is, of course, What does one mean by interdisciplinary? There is indeed a whole field of interdisciplinary, or integrative, studies, with its own academic departments, conferences and journals. (Which in turn raises the troublesome question, Is interdisciplinarity still interdisciplinary, or is it now a discipline? But I won't go there—yet.) The common view is that interdisciplinarity employs more than one discipline to address a complex problem. Interdisciplinary studies tend to privilege unity, convergence, synthesis, complex questions, and broad issues.

This article examines the development, impact and integration of interdisciplinary approaches in British Higher Education Institutions. It evaluates how the concept of interdisciplinarity has become popularised over time and embraced by disciplines such as archaeology. It then explores the extent to which interdisciplinary approaches have impacted research agendas, first, by evaluating the interdisciplinary research calls from 2019 for seven UK-based research councils and then, at a discipline level, using archaeology as an exemplar. Overall, interdisciplinary research calls only accounted for, at best, 11.9% of a council’s budget. Interrogation of the funding requirements of four of the largest archaeological-research funders demonstrated that successful archaeology-themed grant applications are reliant on interdisciplinarity. The influence of interdisciplinarity on British University’s research and education agendas was examined through analysing the strategic plans of eight universities, followed by an analysis of the availability and potential benefits of interdisciplinary undergraduate and research programmes. This indicated that interdisciplinary approaches are interwoven into university’s research aspirations but displayed variation in relation to their educational goals, with only 20% of institutions offering specific interdisciplinary degree programmes. Despite this, the skillset and research outputs produced as a result of interdisciplinary collaboration were found to be highly valued, thereby suggesting that interdisciplinarity will increasingly feature in the research and education strategies of British universities.

SUMMARYGlobal environmental changes present unprecedented challenges to humans and the ecosystems upon which they depend. The need for interdisciplinary approaches to solve such multidimensional challenges is clear, however less clear is whether current attempts to cross disciplinary boundaries are succeeding. Indeed, efforts to further interdisciplinary approaches remain hampered by failures in assessing their scope and success. Here a set of measures examined the interdisciplinarity of the environmental sciences and tested two literature-based hypotheses: (1) newer and larger disciplines are more interdisciplinary; and (2) interdisciplinary research has lower impact factors than its counterparts. In addition, network analysis was used to map interdisciplinarity and determine the relative extent to which environmental science disciplines draw on alternative disciplinary perspectives. Contrary to expectations, age and size of a discipline had no effect on measures of interdisciplinarity for papers published in 2006, though metrics indicated larger articles and journals were more interdisciplinary. In addition, interdisciplinary research had a greater impact factor than its more strictly disciplinary peers. Network analysis revealed disciplines acting as ‘interdisciplinary frontiers’, bridging critical gaps between otherwise disparate subject areas. Whilst interdisciplinarity is complex, a combination of diversity metrics and network analysis provides valuable preliminary insights for interdisciplinary environmental research policy. The successful promotion of interdisciplinarity is needed to help dispel commonly perceived barriers to interdisciplinarity and create opportunities for such work by increasing the space available for different disciplines to encounter each other. In particular, the networks presented highlight the importance of considering disciplinary functioning within the wider context, to ensure maximum benefit to the scientific community as a whole.

The article deals with the phenomenon of interdisciplinarity regarded as one of the main methodological principles of modern linguistics. Under discussion are the problems of the anthropocentric paradigm which at present takes a dominant place among other scientific paradigms. The relationships between interdisciplinarity and other methodological principles such as anthropocentrism, functionalism and explanatorism have been analyzed. The levels of interdisciplinarity as polydisciplinarity and transdisciplinarity have been highlighted. The assumption that some notions, such as discourse, concept, linguocultureme, foregrounding are interdisciplinary by nature, and can not be discussed within the framework of one discipline, is put forward. From the position of interdisciplinarity the scientific status of such disciplines as stylistics and cognitive linguistics has been discussed. One of the conclusions is that the interdisciplinary synthesis of Stylistics is determined by its internal links with all the language aspects (phonological stylistics, stylistic grammar, lexical stylistics, stylistic phraseology, stylistics of word-formation), and external correlations of Stylistics with the disciplines of the anthropocentric paradigm. As for the interdisciplinary status of Cognitive Linguistics, it is characterized by two tendencies: 1) correlations with both humanitarian sciences (Philosophy of language, Sociolinguistics, Linguoculturology), natural sciences (Psycholinguistics, Neurolinguistics), exact and technical sciences (Mathematical Linguistics, Computer Linguistics); 2) interpenetration of many notions and methods of analysis of Cognitive Linguistics and other sciences. The main conclusions of the research are the assumptions about: a) interdisciplinarity as a basic methodological principle of modern linguistics; b) a variety of forms, types and levels of interdisciplinarity; c) the interdisciplinary status of all the anthropocentric trends of modern linguistics; d) the peculiar features of interdisciplinarity in Stylistics and Cognitive Linguistics; e) the necessity of an interdisciplinary approach to the analysis of many notions of modern linguistics.

Despite the general trend to embrace interdisciplinarity in post-secondary education, we remain remarkably unclear concerning what we mean by interdisciplinarity and how it is achieved. Reporting on research conducted in a team-taught interdisciplinary course, I propose a new way of conceptualizing interdisciplinary connections, grounded in Bakhtinian theories of language and cognition. I offer a three-part schema for identifying the discursive disciplinary resources individuals use to make interdisciplinary connections and identify some broad characteristics of writing assignments that appear to invite students to make connections among disciplines. Finally, I argue that reflection on certain types of interdisciplinary connections can be an extremely powerful resource for interdisciplinary as well as disciplinary thinking and learning.

The purpose of this study was to describe the interdisciplinary teamwork pedagogy of the Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities (LEND) training programs, specifically the content focus, instructional methods, and assessment practices. LEND programs are a national network providing long-term, graduate interdisciplinary training through federal funds from the Health Resources and Services Administration's Maternal Child Health Bureau. This study used a mixed method approach to describe the interdisciplinary teamwork pedagogy of LEND training programs. The study occurred in three stages: 1) a survey of LEND training directors, 2) a survey of LEND interdisciplinary teamwork instructors, and 3) document review of the national LEND website and LEND program websites. Data were analyzed using statistical and qualitative methods and interpreted through the use of professional competencies, the How People Learn framework, and research literature. This study provides for an understanding of interdisciplinary teamwork within one national program in order to inform efforts for training, practice, and research.

Drawing on a wide variety of social science theories, this study investigates the effects of tenure system, university climate for interdisciplinary research (IDR), gender, and industry experience on academic scientists’ engagement in IDR in different disciplines. Using survey and bibliometric data, two dependent variables are generated to measure production aspects of IDR: the self-reported percentage of IDR papers which is from researchers’ own estimate of their IDR papers responding to one survey question, and the calculated percentage of IDR papers which is a combination of two bibliometric indicators of scientists’ borrowing and boundary crossing activities. Results find that our conventional wisdom about the effects of some individual and organizational factors on scientists’ propensity to engage in IDR is outdated, and their effects depend on the disciplinary contexts. These findings suggest science policy makers, funding agencies and university administrators to keep fresh and informed about scientists’ research activities and underlying context and take full into account of distinct characteristics of different disciplines when they make or reform policies to encourage IDR work.

Overexposure to the sun is associated with an increased risk of melanoma and nonmelanoma skin cancer, but indications of improvements in sun protection behavior are poor. Attempts to identify emerging themes in skin cancer control have largely been driven by groups of experts from a single field. In December 2016, 19 experts from various disciplines convened for Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Skin Cancer, a 2-day meeting hosted by the National Academy of Sciences. The group discussed knowledge gaps, perspectives on sun exposure, implications for skin cancer risk and other health outcomes, and new directions. Five themes emerged from the discussion: (1) The definition of risk must be expanded, and categories for skin physiology must be refined to incorporate population diversities. (2) Risky sun exposure often co-occurs with other health-related behaviors. (3) Messages must be nuanced to target at-risk populations. (4) Persons at risk for tanning disorder must be recognized and treated. (5) Sun safety interventions must be scalable. Efficient use of technologies will be required to sharpen messages to specific populations and to integrate them within multilevel interventions. Further interdisciplinary research should address these emerging themes to build effective and sustainable approaches to large-scale behavior change.

Annotation:
Accounting for about 15-20% of GDP in developed economies, public procurement is both a paramount economic phenomenon and a leading activity of governments. Sound procurement policies and practices are therefore essential not only to achieve best value for money when purchasing goods and services of public utility, but also to pursue strategic objectives of crucial importance (e.g., sustainable growth and innovation) and to optimize spending in an era where public money has a high opportunity cost. This dissertation contributes to the research on public procurement by providing original investigations and results in an interdisciplinary fashion. The three essays presented adopt different methodologies to analyze relevant issues in public procurement which have been so far neglected by the literature. The first essay provides an auction-theoretical analysis of “Precommercial Procurement” (PCP), which is an innovative stepwise practice recently introduced in the EU for the public procurement of R&D. In particular, PCP is modeled as a multistage elimination contest with budget-constrained players and non-sunk bids. The non-sunk feature constitutes a novelty in the modelization of elimination contests and relies on the consideration that when budget-constrained contestants initially strategize on how much to bid in each stage, they do not regard bids spent in earlier stages as strategically irrelevant. This is due to the fact that contestants face a trade-off when allocating scarce resources over stages: the more they spend earlier the less they have to spend later, and vice versa. In a simple two-stage all-pay framework with complete information and asymmetric players, it is found that, notwithstanding the trade-off, the ex-ante strongest player is always able to deter other players from submitting a positive bid in the first stage, guaranteeing herself shortlisting with the smallest outlay, and saving most resources for the second stage. This is shown to imply that the two-stage all-pay contest has a lower performance, in terms of expected revenue, than the single-stage one. On the basis of these results, PCP does not seem to be a very advantageous practice for the procurement of R&D. The second essay provides a contract-theoretical framework to explain the occurrence of embezzlement of public money in the execution of public contracts. It is argued that at the core of the phenomenon is an agency problem where the room for the contracting firm’s moral hazard is created by the opportunism of its principal - a corruptible top-tier politician. It is considered that often corruption interests the execution stage of a contract (rather than only the award stage) and has a political nature (rather than only bureaucratic): top-level politicians may as well have to gain from large-scale corruption. In particular, the model allows for the political principal to be partially selfish and for both the auditing technology and the stakes of corruption to be endogenous and dependent on the selfishness of the politician. The model shows that while a moderately opportunist politician prevents the firm from embezzling money, an enough opportunist politician creates an incentive for embezzlement in optimal contracts, in order to ask for a share of the money conditional upon detection. The third essay investigates empirically the relationship between the degree of centralization in a procurement system and its performance. Despite its centrality, this issue has been only marginally considered by the literature, and without conclusive findings. The essay exploits the TED dataset to provide a preliminary investigation of the issue for Italy. The Italian case is appropriate in this context since all levels of government plus a number of other public institutions are involved in procurement, and are largely subjected to the same rules. Using winning rebate as a measure of procurement performance, and controlling for other determinants of rebate, it is found that small decentralized units (i.e., municipalities and public enterprises) are less efficient than (more) central purchasers, despite they currently award most procurement contracts. It is argued that at the basis of this performance gap is the fact that small decentralized purchasing units lack the specialized and competent human resources which are needed to efficiently administrate the procurement process. It is therefore concluded that the Italian procurement system is probably too much decentralized and that some reorganization on a more centralized basis could improve on the general performance gap.

Primary central nervous system lymphomas (PCNSL) are very aggressive malignancies with poor survival rate even with treatments (survival median is 44 months). This disease affects immune cells (lymphocytes) and forms diffuse and non-surgically removable tumor in the central nervous system. High-dose chemotherapy and radiotherapy are the common treatments with severe side effects. New therapeutic approaches are required for increasing treatment efficiency. We focused on primary intraocular lymphomas (PIOL) and primary cerebral lymphomas (PCL), which are subtypes of PCNSL. PIOL and PCL cells have a high propensity to migrate and form metastases in the brain and in the controlateral eye in the case of PIOL, and in the eye in the PCL case. However, metastatic dissemation mechanisms remain unclear. The objective of the present work was to study the effects of innovative treatments of B-cell lymphoma on primary tumor, on metastases, and on circulating tumor cells in PIOL and PCL immunocompetent syngeneic murine models of lymphomas using non-invasive in vivo imaging methods. We studied the effects of Ublituximab, a glycoengineered anti-CD20 monoclonal antibody (mAb), and CpG-ODN, a TLR-9 agonist, in mouse models. We showed that Ublituximab exhibits significant anti-tumor effect in PIOL and PCL, while CpG showed significant anti-tumor effect in PCL. We monitored the tumor burden and metastases using innovating non-invasive optical imaging or cell detection methods: bioluminescence imaging (BLI) and in vivo flow cytometer (IVFC). BLI was used to locate metastasis and to quantify tumor burden. We indeed developed a bioluminescence-based tumor burden quantification method that reduces user-dependence, allows comparisons between experiments, reveals statistical relevance, and which is easy to use. An IVFC device was set up to investigate the role of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) in PIOL and PCL. This fluorescence-based technique allows detection of CTCs by analyzing the cells flowing in blood vessels. However we had to overcome the problem of autofluorescence and tissue absorption. Two approaches were studied in parallel: a elaborating new cell line expressing far red fluorescent proteins, modulating the excitation light of an IVFC device to give the cell a unique signature therefore enhancing sensitivity, increasing signal to noise ratio. The modulated excitation IVFC allowed us to calculate the velocity of cells, and infer their position in blood vessel phantoms. The analysis of treatment effects on tumor burden, metastases and CTCs in PIOL and PCL could help understanding lymphoma metastatic dissemination and contribute to treatment follow-up, thus allowing design of new therapeutic approaches with increased efficacy

Abstract Interdisciplinary initiatives have been encouraged in higher education curricula, especially in mechanical engineering as a result of the industry’s calls for talent with multidisciplinary competencies to solve complex real-world problems. However, disciplinary distance, due to disciplinary differences, poses great challenges in interdisciplinary teaching and learning. How can interdisciplinary faculty members collaborate effectively in teaching? How can students with different backgrounds learn significant knowledge? Collaboration for interdisciplinary education across disciplines is challenging, as co-teachers are usually affiliated with different departments or even schools, and they tend to speak different disciplinary languages and value different disciplinary cultures. Similarly, students in engineering design teams come from different backgrounds. Consistent with Klein’s concepts of Wide Interdisciplinarity and Narrow Interdisciplinarity, we propose the concept of disciplinary distance to present the research findings of disciplinary differences and their implications on interdisciplinary teaching and learning. This paper presents a qualitative analysis of disciplinary distance, as manifested in interdisciplinary education from faculty members’ perspectives. From 13 semi-structured interviews, we find that disciplinary distance plays a vital role in interdisciplinary teaching and learning. It influences teamwork — both in co-teacher teams and student teams. Interdisciplinary course content and interdisciplinary co-teacher teams can also create a wide disciplinary distance that serves as a barrier for interdisciplinary learning. We further find that interdisciplinary collaboration may help to mediate the negative impact of disciplinary distance.

Interdisciplinarity promotes competencies like asking meaningful questions about a complex problem, examine, and synthesize multiple sources of information, methods, and perspectives, in order to integrate knowledge and ways of thinking across two or more established disciplines to produce cognitive advancement. The Interdisciplinary Week of Game Design challenges the students to demonstrate an interdisciplinary understanding of a complex problem that students define, organized by teams, having as its starting point a given theme. Teamwork between members of different academic years favors the sharing of knowledge among peers with different aptitudes, technical skills, and degrees of competence.

Abstract Engineering education requires competent teachers to facilitate students’ interdisciplinary learning in solving complex problems and engage students in interdisciplinary teamwork. While most studies in the literature have focused on identifying or measuring students’ competencies, few studies have focused on teachers. What teacher competencies are essential for effective interdisciplinary teaching in engineering education? To answer this question and contribute to teacher development and improve student learning, this study analyzes teachers’ competencies in interdisciplinary engineering education. We conducted qualitative interviews with 14 teachers in engineering education with diverse disciplinary backgrounds in engineering, design, technology, science and business. Thematic analysis is used to highlight teachers’ social, affective, and pedagogical competencies. The results show that all three areas of competencies are considered to be essential for teachers. Teachers appear to have a good level of social competency, as they recognize the importance of effective communication with students and co-teachers across disciplines, as well as with industry partners. Teachers also exhibit a decent level of affective competency through their motivation for learning. In addition, we found that the lack of interdisciplinary-related knowledge added more difficulties for teachers to gain pedagogical competency in interdisciplinary engineering education. The results of this study can be used for designing teachers’ professional development programs related to interdisciplinarity.

"Interdisciplinary learning of mathematics and arts is often acknowledged as supporting the development of students' problem-solving skills, encouraging student involvement in learning, and fostering students' creativity. However, for teachers to acknowledge the benefits of interdisciplinary learning of mathematics and arts, and express willingness to apply it in their classrooms, they must first experience such learning for themselves. To that end, they have to take part in dedicated training courses. The study described in this paper followed the experience of twenty-seven elementary school mathematics teachers who participated in an annual professional development program that took place once every two weeks and was designed to qualify them to implement an interdisciplinary approach to teaching mathematics and arts. The course included four interdisciplinary modules: math-music, math-painting, math-photography, and math-dance. None of the teachers had prior knowledge of interdisciplinary teaching and learning. The mathematical topic chosen was fractions, as this topic entails numerous difficulties of various kinds both for the teachers and the students. In what follows we focus on the teachers' experience with module no. 1, math-music. Before we explicitly exposed the teachers to the rationale of interdisciplinary learning of mathematics and music, they were asked to design learning activities that integrate fractions and music. No specific instructions were given, as we aimed at allowing the teachers to examine their initial perceptions and interpretations regarding interdisciplinarity, and then adapting the contents of the professional development program to the teachers' early perceptions and knowledge. After completing the design of the activities, the teachers presented them, explained their considerations, and provided mutual feedback. They also rated the extent to which interdisciplinarity was expressed in the activity, according to criteria they had developed themselves. The study indicated that teachers who knew how to play a certain musical instrument and read notes produced more mathematically significant content. Moreover, activities based on considerations relating only to common student mistakes in performing arithmetic operations in fractions did not lead to the design of activities characterized as having a high extent of interdisciplinarity. In case the considerations included general mathematical knowledge and knowledge of the mathematics curriculum, the extent of integration increased. Following these findings, the professional development program focused on deepening the teachers' mathematical knowledge and musical knowledge relevant to the subject of fractions. This approach has proven to be effective in terms of teachers' ability to produce meaningful interdisciplinary math-music activities, thus indicating the feasibility of teacher training for implementing an interdisciplinary approach."
