PurposeOnline communities are increasingly important for organizations and marketers. However, the issue of how structural features of online communities affect consumers' behavioral engagement remains relatively unexplored. The purpose of this study is to examine how and why different types of interdependence within online communities (i.e. task/outcome interdependence) influence individual engagement in group activities, thereby providing insights regarding online community design.Design/methodology/approachTwo surveys were conducted with two online groups in China. One is a task-interdependent group from Douban Forum, and the other is an outcome-interdependent group from Sina Forum. A total of 159 valid responses from the task-interdependent group and 162 valid responses from the outcome-interdependent group were received. We analyzed the data using multivariate regression with Smart PLS and SPSS.FindingsThe results reveal that both task and outcome interdependence are positively related to individual behavioral engagement in online group behavior, and collective efficacy mediates the aforementioned effects. In addition, task complexity moderates the relationship between task interdependence and individual behavioral engagement; communication within group moderates the relationship between outcome interdependence and behavioral engagement, and the effect is mediated by collective efficacy.Originality/valueThis study is the first to investigate the role of an important factor of group structure, namely, interdependence, in fueling individual behavioral engagement in online communities. The results shed light on companies' design strategies to develop and retain online community members and also provide important insights for researchers interested in social network marketing.

This paper presents a method for validating and transforming data for use in interdependent infrastructure network analysis. Critical infrastructure are interdependent on each other for delivery of services and execution of restoration activities. These interdependencies make infrastructure systems vulnerable to extreme events and highlights the needs for preparedness and response plans. Optimization models have been used to create effective plans using interdependent infrastructure networks. These models require accurate input data. However, many data sources have inconsistencies or errors which inhibit the ability to use such optimization models. This work identifies common errors in input network data and provides a method for processing and correcting these errors. We demonstrate the effectiveness of this method on data representing the transportation network in Juan Diaz town, in Panama. Keywords: Data processing, network, infrastructure, interdependence.

This article deals with interdependence and the internationalisation process of multinationals (MNCs); a topic that has received scarce attention in the literature (e.g. Bell & Young, 1998; Holm et al., 1995). By reviewing the literature on behavioural models of internationalisation, initially, the article suggests that MNCs should be regarded as loosely coupled systems in which independence and interdependence of operations shape how MNCs evolve and organise activities across borders. Subsequently, the article models the internationalisation process of MNCs by highlighting three dimensions that characterise their pattern of evolution - uniformity, direction and rhythm, and lays out three hypotheses on the relationship between these dimensions and interdependence. The direction of the relationship is suggested to be negative, i.e., other things being equal, interdependence is negatively related to uniformity, direction and the rhythm of the internationalisation processes. The article concludes by claiming that the internationalisation of MNCs results from an intricate combination of independent, yet interdependent, internationalisation processes that evolve in various spatial and temporal contexts within the MNC network.

Modern trends in production management have increased the importance of the time factor in both production and logistics. However, there is much less room for maneuver in production than in logistics. Therefore, to reduce the duration of the main production cycle, many companies are trying to improve intra-production logistics by introducing new technologies and logistics systems. Of decisive importance for production management is the activity of supplying the necessary materials, including logistics operations. In this context, it is worth mentioning that at the present stage the basic links between production management and logistics have been concentrated by specialists in a new field that has been defined as logistics management. According to the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals, “Logistics management is an integration function that coordinates and optimizes all logistics activities, as well as integrates logistics activities with other functions, including marketing, sales production, finance and information technology”(Supply Chain Management Definitions and Glossary, 2020). We believe that the concept of logistics management best meets all the links between production management and logistics.

Japanese and U.S. sixth, eighth, and tenth graders ( N = 2141) responded to questionnaires asking whom they depended on in six contexts of need. These contexts were: morning awakening, physical illness, emotional upset, help with homework, causing a problem, and guidance in extracurricular activities. Findings indicated that, relative to culture, contextual effects exerted an equally if not more powerful effect on students' responses. In line with traditional cross-national theorizing, U.S. youth were, overall, more self-reliant than their Japanese peers. In contrast to such theorizing, U.S. students were more interdependent with family, and Japanese students were more interdependent with peers, than their counterparts in the other country. Furthermore, both Japanese and U.S. youth showed similar age-related decreases in interdependence with family and increases in interdependence with peers. Results are discussed in terms of active dyadic help-seeking versus conceptualized notions of social identity, and recent theories of development, culture, and the self.

The problem of interdependence is crucial for understanding the climate, with its interactions between land, water, and atmosphere, as well as with human activities, past and future. The concept of interdependence expresses two types of relationship, that of causality and that of responsibility. For the problems of climate governance as understood as a statistical average in the Conferences of the parties (COP), causal dependence is impossible to reconstruct precisely, notably because of the complexity of these phenomena. However, dependence does not only concern the domain of being, falling within the natural sciences, the social sciences, and the human descriptive predictive. It also concerns the ought-to-be and therefore the normative sciences (ethics, political theory, law, and normative economy). Here interdependence is much more problematic since it is opposed to freedom. This article discusses the various interdependencies and political solutions that are offered to take care of this needs, architectures for discussing climate change politically: systems (N. Luhmann) and deliberation (J. Habermas). It then proposes another solution, that of moral and political consideration.

This paper investigates multiscale dynamic interconnection between the five agricultural commodities – corn, wheat, soybean, rice and oats, covering more than 18 years period. For research purposes, two complementary methodologies were used – wavelet coherence and phase difference. Low coherence is present at shorter time-horizons, while at longer time-horizons high coherence areas are found, but they are not widespread in all wavelet coherence plots. These results speak in favour of diversification opportunities. Strong coherence in longer time-horizons indicates that common factors are likely to be the main determinants of the agricultural prices in the long-run. On the other hand, rare high coherence areas at lower scales suggest that monetary and financial activities are most likely the causes that have affected the comovements of the grain prices in the short-term horizons. Phase difference discloses a relatively stable pattern between corn-soybean, corn-wheat, rice-oats and oats-soybean in the longer time-horizons. Taking into account investors’ diversification benefits and the leading (lagging) connections in long-run, corn and oats are the most appropriate cereals to be combined in an n-asset portfolio, since these two cereals constantly and very steadily lag soybean, whereas strong coherence between corn and oats does not frequently occur in all wavelet scales.

The methylenetetrahydrofolate dehydrogenase and methenyltetrahydrofolate cyclohydrolase activities from the human trifunctional dehydrogenase/cyclohydrolase/synthetase are proposed to share a single active site. Binding studies reveal that a single tetrahydrofolate binding site exists in the domain and therefore the two activities share a single substrate binding site. As well, a single high affinity NADP-binding site was shown to exist in the domain, where NADP acts both as a substrate of the dehydrogenase and as a partial inhibitor of the cyclohydrolase, at the common active site. The 2$ sp prime$-phosphate of the $2 sp prime ,5 sp prime$-ADP moiety of NADP provides most of the affinity of this ligand for the enzyme. The presence of the 5$ sp prime$-phosphate results in methylenetetrahydrofolate binding cooperativity and activation of the cyclohydrolase. A new kinetic mechanism and the overall equilibrium constant for the dehydrogenase and cyclohydrolase were determined. They are consistent with the proposal that the bifunctional nature of the domain is used to optimize the efficiency of the reverse reactions in vivo. A side-reaction of the cyclohydrolase was identified and a scheme developed for enzymatic synthesis of (6S) -5-formyltetrahydrofolate.

Annotation:
A substantial amount of work in the field of strategic management has attempted to explain the antecedents and outcomes of organizational learning. Though multinational corporations simultaneously engage in various types of tasks, activities, and strategies on a regular basis, the transfer of organizational learning in a multi-task context has largely remained under-explored in the literature. To inform our understanding in this area, this dissertation aimed at synthesizing findings from two parallel research streams of corporate development activities: strategic alliances and acquisitions. Structured in the form of two empirical studies, this dissertation examines: 1) the strategic outcomes of alliance experience of previously allying partners in terms of subsequent acquisition attempts, and 2) the performance implications of prior alliance experience for acquisitions. The first study draws on the relational view of inter-organizational governance to explain how various deal-specific and dyadic characteristics of a partnership relate to partnering firms’ post-alliance acquisition attempts. This model theorizes on a variety of relational mechanisms to build a cohesive theory of inter-organizational exchanges in a multi-task setting where strategic alliances ultimately lead to a firm’s decision to commit further resources. The second study applies organizational learning theory, and specifically examines whether frequency, recency, and relatedness of different dimensions of prior alliances, beyond the dyad-level experience, relate to an acquirer’s superior post-acquisition performance. The hypotheses of the studies are tested using logistic and ordinary least square regressions, respectively. Results analyzed from a sample of cross-border alliance and acquisition deals attempted (for study I) and/or completed (for study II) during the period of 1991 to 2011 generally support the theory that relational exchange determines acquiring firms’ post alliance acquisition behavior and that organizational routines and learning from prior alliances influence a future acquirer’s financial performance. Overall, the empirical findings support our overarching theory of interdependency, and confirm the transfer effect of learning across these alternate, yet related corporate strategies of alliance and acquisition.

Companies that develop products strive to shorten their development time to maintain competitiveness and realize profits faster. Simultaneously, technical development has resulted in an increase in the complexity of products. This has meant that the uncertainty at the beginning of projects and the dependence between development activities has increased. The result of this will be greater difficulties in efficiently and adequately planning development projects and setting deadlines. The purpose of this report is to examine what affects and complicates planning for a product development company and how it affects product development time. Initially, a literature study was conducted, which formed the basis for our interview guide. Data collection was then carried out with the support of the interview guide at a company that develops complex products. Based on the collected data, difficulties and factors affecting product development were identified. Due to the scope of the results, an in-depth literature study was required to be able to compare results with theory. Overall difficulties and factors that were identified and analyzed were schedule, objectives, formal methods, and activities' interdependence. The results are largely in line with the theory presented on the subject in the report. The challenges that should be considered when planning for the development of complex products are mainly management of objectives and dependent activities. Without clear objectives and a dynamic process, development risks taking longer than it needs to. Finally, companies that develop complex products should strive to use a formal method developed specifically for their own company, so that successful projects can be easily repeated.

The Caught Being Good Game (CBGG) is a classroom management intervention used in schools. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of point visibility on appropriate behavior, to examine the degree to which points earned by the opposing team affected the other team’s behavior, to examine both teacher and student preference for the intervention, the effect of student and teacher choice on appropriate behavior, and to systematically replicate previous research showing the effectiveness of the CBGG relative to business as usual. Consistent with previous research, CBGG increased on-task behavior compared to business as usual. Modest and temporary differentiation was observed between salient and hidden points, with hidden resulting in slightly better outcomes. A unit-price analysis further supported that on-task behavior was higher during the hidden points condition. The teacher and students reported preference for the CBGG, and we expect to see higher levels of on-task behavior during the student-choice condition.

Program management is now an important and practical method to deal with multiple related software development projects. A software development program can generate the benefits that cannot be achieved by managing projects individually and it also has the special characteristics such as complexity, uncertainty and interdependence. This dissertation is designed to examine the moderating effect of external communication activities of the program team used on the relationship between goal interdependence and the extent of expertise adequacy. Based upon organizational Information Processing Theory (IPT), theoretical frameworks are developed. The proposed research models are tested by surveying software product development programs across a range of industries with 303 responses. The results will contribute to the understanding of multiple-project communication in a program’s context. The specific interactions between interdependence and communication and the product development coordination will provide a guideline for the industrial practices.

This research draws from institutional, social constructionism, and stakeholder theories to describe how the boundaries of legality and legitimacy create official and unofficial economies. The theoretical model is also used to explain how boundaries shift and are crossed. Individual business activities are the unit of analysis for this work. We envision hierarchically positioned stakeholder groups as the creators of the boundaries of legality and of social acceptability. The activities in the unofficial economy fall into either the informal (illegal but socially acceptable) or the criminal (illegal and socially unacceptable) quadrants; activities in the official economy are either in the formal (legal and socially acceptable) or the marginal (legal but socially unacceptable) quadrants. The interdependence among the four quadrants highlights the importance of theoretically specifying how boundaries around each form, shift, and are crossed, leading to changes in the size and scope of each quadrant in developed, emerging, and developing countries.

Chapter 6 examines the effects of cultural priming on cognition and brain activity by reviewing brain imaging evidence that temporary shifts of cultural knowledge systems toward independence or interdependence can significantly modulated brain activities involved in pain-related sensory processing, visual perception, self-face recognition and self-reflection, monetary reward, empathy, and a resting state. These findings provide evidence for a causal relationship between cultural belief/value and functional organization of the human brain. The findings further suggest that functional brain activity is constrained by both the sustained cultural frameworks formulated during long-term cultural experiences and the transient cultural frameworks induced by short-term exposure to cultural values.

It introduces a cultural neuroscience paradigm for investigating genetic influences on the coupling of brain activity and culture by presenting two studies that examined how serotonin transporter functional polymorphism and oxytocin receptor gene moderate the association between interdependence and brain activities involved in self-reflection and empathy. These studies illustrate a new approach to understanding the manner with which culture interacts with gene to shape human brain activity.

During the past four decades, there has been a significant growth of organizations that function across borders and cultures. These organizations are not necessarily Western or European in origin. The functioning and evolution of global organizations are topics of considerable importance. This chapter discusses the role of increasing interdependence among nations as a context for the functioning of global organizations. The chapter presents the rationale for going global and discusses the framework for understanding the differences among countries and institutions that present opportunities and barriers. Global organizations function in an increasingly complex and dynamic environment, as is clearly evidenced by Brexit. The concept of tariff-free transactions resulting in economic blocs guided most of the economic activities of these global organizations in the twentieth century. Recent events cast doubt as to their viability and effectiveness. The chapter discusses these issues and presents the various challenges that globalization creates for these organizations.

This chapter critically investigates the relationship between Buddhism and ecology, emphasizing the behaviors and intentions of practitioners rather than interpretations of early Buddhist scriptures. Through examination of the contemporary interpretations and implementations of the concept of interdependence (Pali: paticca-samuppada), animal release rituals, and the activities of Thai forest monks and environmental monks, the author aims to understand both what influences Buddhist environmental activists and the degree to which their actions are effectual. Part of this context is to understand the motivations of practitioners and the degree of environmental awareness underlying Buddhist practices that are often perceived to be ecologically friendly. Acts such as animal release rituals often result in unintentional negative ecological consequences. Yet Buddhists can have positive environmental impacts when Buddhist practices are consciously integrated with ecological principles and consequences rather than simply being labeled as environmentally friendly on an abstract level.

An enactive sensorimotor approach to perception places the agent at the center of the engagements that constitute a perceptual act. The notion of agency required, however, cannot be based solely on an organism’s biological well-being. Interests beyond mere survival guide many activities that animals with rich sensorimotor lives engage in. It is proposed that the processes that individuate a sensorimotor agent are the very acts that it performs, and that a network of precarious but mutually stabilizing sensorimotor schemes can satisfy the conditions of agency. Compatibility is demonstrated with dynamical approaches to behavioral development, as well as with psychological theories that support the view of a networked behavioral organization. The interdependence of agency at the organismic, sensorimotor, and social levels is discussed, as well as the relevance of sensorimotor agency, to understand the inherent meaningfulness of perception for the perceiver, as well as her subjectivity.

The functional properties of marine invertebrate larvae represent the sum of the physiological activities of the individual, the interdependence among cells making up the whole, and the correct positioning of cells within the larval body. This chapter examines physiological aspects of nutrient acquisition, digestion, assimilation, and distribution within invertebrate larvae from an organismic and comparative perspective. Growth and development of larvae obviously require the acquisition of “food.” Yet the mechanisms where particulate or dissolved organic materials are converted into biomass and promote development of larvae differ and are variably known among groups. Differences in the physiology of the digestive system (secreted enzymes, gut transit time, and assimilation) within and among feeding larvae suggest the possibility of an underappreciated plasticity of digestive physiology. How the ingestion of seawater by and the existence of a circulatory system within larvae contribute to larval growth and development represent important topics for future research.

This chapter explores team innovation in the context of healthcare by integrating literature and empirical evidence from the organizational, social, and medical sciences on team innovation. Innovation encompasses the activities that transform the intentional decision to adopt and implement a new idea, process, product, or procedure into regular and sustained practice. The healthcare industry needs innovation to adapt to and manage complexity within a rapidly changing healthcare system. Interdisciplinary teams have been adopted as innovations to solve certain problems in healthcare that require coordinated interdependent action and complementary knowledge and skills, such as chronic conditions and disease management, patient safety concerns, and cancer treatment and care. Teams may also be employed to manage healthcare innovation adoption and implementation efforts, and the industry must leverage team composition and team process factors to help these healthcare teams innovate.

Today, swollen numbers of humanity are now intensively interactive and interdependent through vast networks of complex machines and built infrastructures that span the planet, whose unintended consequences and spillovers have grown to species significance. The practical context for all human activities has become a densely occupied and tightly coupled neighborhood. While the content of cosmopolitanism, in its ancient, Enlightenment, and current phases, reflects shrinking geographical spaces, it presumes an Earth composed of different places, rather than a more accurate “terrapolitan” view of Earth as a single place. In the terrapolitan situation, the central problem is not that humans are insufficiently attentive to the needs of distant others. Rather, it is that they are insufficiently attentive to their collective self-interest in survival in the face of existential threats. In part, these limitations stem from the utter novelty of the threats to basic interests that have arisen with such historical rapidity.

This chapter aims to describe an alternative tool developed to represent the interdependence established in the landscape between the human activities and the capacity of natural resources to answer for their needs. Therefore, focused on a case study of the Arrábida Maritime Coast located in Portugal, the research not only allowed to analyze the ecological and cultural landscape components but also to diagnose its resilience to the human activities. In this sense, considering the functional limits of the current cartographic representation models, it was also necessary to set up a new complementary diagrammatic model to show how the landscape interdependences are established. Despite their complex scientific data calculation nature associated with the geoprocessing techniques to connect both representation models, this alternative tool has integrative and intuitive interpretation features, by which it is possible to know the landscape suitability to support new land uses and land covers.

The aim of this work is to study the dynamics of the impact that the students’ leisure activities have on the value system formation of modern students. The object of the empirical analysis is musical and theatrical art as a form of multi-dimensional socio-cultural influences. Noting their interdependence, the authors on a particular empirical material prove the change in the value of leisure in the modernization of higher education in Russia, and establishment of a new function - the formation of common cultural competences and worldview attitudes of the future professionals. Special attention is paid to the role and importance of leisure activities of students for the society, and necessity of researching them for the formation of cultural policy. We show the results of the monitoring studies by the authors identifying the ideas that modern students have about leisure preferences, and refute the myth about the lack of demand for works of world and national classics. An increase of students’ reflection degree on works which address social problems has been revealed in motivation for choosing a cultural work. Student society is increasingly becoming an acting subject in society, and this is reflected in sudents' leisure preferences.

Often, design problems are coupled and their concurrent resolution by interacting stakeholders is required. The ensuing interactions are characterized predominantly by degree of interdependence and level of cooperation. Since tradeoffs, made within and among sub-systems, inherently contribute to system level performance, bridging the associated gaps is crucial. With this in mind, effective collaboration, centered on continued communication, concise coordination, and non-biased achievement of system level objectives, is becoming increasingly important. Thus far, research in distributed and decentralized decision-making has focused primarily on conflict resolution. Game theoretic protocols and negotiation tactics have been used extensively as a means of making the required tradeoffs, often in a manner that emphasizes the maximization of stakeholder (personal) payoff over system level performance. More importantly, virtually all of the currently instantiated mechanisms are based upon the a priori assumption of the existence of solutions that are acceptable to all interacting parties. No explicit consideration has been given thus far to ensuring the convergence of stakeholder design activities leading up to the coupled decision and the associated determination of values for uncoupled and coupled design parameters. Consequently, unnecessary and costly iteration is likely to result from mismatched objectives. In this paper, we advocate moving beyond strategic collaboration towards co-design. We present an alternative coordination mechanism, centered on sharing key pieces of information throughout the process of determining a solution to a coupled system. Specifically, we focus on (1) establishing and assessing collaborative design spaces, (2) identifying and exploring regions of acceptable performance, and (3) preserving stakeholder dominion over design sub-system resolution throughout the duration of a given design process. The fundamental goal is to establish a consistent framework for goal-oriented collaboration that (1) more accurately represents the mechanics underlying product development and (2) facilitates interacting stakeholders in achieving their respective objectives in light of system level priorities. This is accomplished via improved utilization of shared resources and avoidance of unnecessary reductions in design freedom. Comparative performance of the proposed method is established using a simple example, involving the resolution of a tradeoff with respect to a system of non-linear equations.

Shipping, which is one of the most important transport modes, plays a significant role in international trade, but unfortunately, it also contributes significantly to global emissions. The present study proposes a generic method for establishing a system of evaluation criteria for assessing the greenness of shipping. A system of evaluation criteria that consists of multiple influence factors has been established, and an Analytic Network Process has been used to determine the relative importance of the influential factors and to consider their interdependences and interactions. The results can help stakeholders draft strategic measures that enhance the greenness of the shipping activities.

Many tools and methods claim to be “innovative”. Most belong either to project management, engineering design or creativity approaches. “Innovation Management” literature usually discusses “success patterns” for Innovation based on case studies, but hardly process the comprehensive support of innovation activities. It seems that there is a strategic gap between traditional idea-realization processes that focus on reliable project management and the diffuse situation in ever faster changing environments with unclear opportunities and risks. To professionally reinforce strategic innovation activities it is necessary to define a resilient framework. This paper discusses a new view on the field of innovation that is based on the comprehensiveness of philosophy. Fundamental definitions of early philosophers on the interdependencies of the “co-evolution of the world” are applied to define an “Innovation Philosophy”. This is transformed into an “Innovation Strategy” that comprises a repeatable “Innovation Process” for guiding teams through Innovation Projects.

Concurrent engineering or overlapping activities is a business strategy for schedule compression on large development projects. Design parameters and tasks from every aspect of a product’s development process and their interdependencies are overlapped and worked on in parallel. Concurrent engineering suffers from negative effects such as excessive rework and increased social and communication complexity that negatively affect gains. In the university environment, however, these difficulties and negative effects, if controlled, can help in promoting our educational goals such that they should be exploited rather than avoided. Although linear (i.e., waterfall) has been the most often used model in teaching, time constraints and an opportunity-driven learning process should make the concurrent model suitable for student projects. This paper elaborates on these ideas and reports on our students’ experience.

Mountain ski tourism is an important type of tourism, which is economically and culturally valuable industry particularly for developed countries. Not all mountain regions are appropriate for ski tourism development, however. The purpose of the report is to show the specifics of a mountain destination and its potential of offering ski tourism. Some analyzes and reports will outline the characteristics and the specifics of offering of mountain tourism for ski. The results are indicating the potential and the structural risks, new market conditions and trends, the principal of planning and the frame work of mountain ski tourism development. Factors that include climate, topography, scenery and the seasonal cycle all determine the facilities and activities of mountain ski tourism, reflecting the strong interdependency between the mountain ecosystem and the mountain tourism system. Ski tourism development must therefore go hand in hand with protecting and preserving these resources to ensure tourism's long-term growth and viability. Investments in ski tourism-related facilities can valorize these resources in terms of creating employment and income to the local residents of mountain regions.

The rampant changes marking modern manufacturing are driven by: (a) excess manufacturing capacity and the consequent increase in competition, and (b) rising environmental awareness and legislation. This green legislation (WEEE, EuP, RoHS, etc.) has arisen in an attempt to resolve the inherent conflict between a number of competing needs: (1) environmental requirements and constraints, (2) consumer demands and (3) industrial profitability constraints. Consequently, modern industries seeking to maintain corporate profits while complying with new legislation have begun to shift from product delivery to through-life service support. That is, companies supply products and continue to maintain them throughout the product’s lifetime. Industrial profitability in such a paradigm requires technological adaption and innovation as well as enhanced product performance control. All these changes and requirements are dictating change in design approaches and practices. This paper presents a new design methodology and supporting tools to analyze and improve product design, while taking into account environmental impact and the selling-of-services business paradigm. The analysis is based on dynamic product models aimed at extending life span while reducing complexities and internal interdependencies by means of component periodicity planning and uncoupling activities.

This work addresses voluntary geographic information (VGI) as an information system that facilitates organizations to achieve specific goals by outsourcing processes and activities to an online community. A definition of a voluntary geographic information system (VGIS) is proposed, identifying its core components (Project, Participants, Technology), then, crowdsourcing, the most relevant process for managing information within these type of systems, is analysed. We analyse several types of crowdsourcing models in the context of VGIS, and it is proposed a classification built around the different ways of organizing a community, which include different levels of participation according to the use of three processes: contributory, collaborative and participatory. Based on the study of the different typologies intrinsically linked to the existing levels of involvement and engagement, and the use of participants' cognitive skills, a continuum of participation is identified, presenting two opposite tendencies when designing VGI projects: crowd-based and community-driven, the latter with higher levels of collaboration or even co-creation. Based on the above, it is proposed a set of criteria for the design of the crowdsourcing strategy of a VGIS, as a roadmap that directs the project. This design and planning tool helps to characterize and define in a simple way the general requirements of the processes and activities of a VGIS that will be implemented through a crowdsourcing task, being the first step in the interdependent design of the project, participation and technological components. The design of subsequent strategies related to the other components of the system must be aligned and linked to the crowdsourcing strategy, and altogether will guide the development of tasks, functionalities and the specific technological tools of the system.http://dx.doi.org/10.4995/CIGeo2017.2017.6629

Religious identity is critically important to consider in assessing patterns of displacement and the dynamics of conflict and peace-building, as well as programmatic and policy responses to humanitarian crises. Conflicts are frequently driven by discrimination and generate massive numbers of refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs) as they flee from persecution and violence, whilst individuals or groups may be targeted for their identity or face insecurity during community activities. As a result, the relationship between diversity, inclusivity, and interdependence is key to developing approaches that address intersecting forms of insecurity experienced by religious minorities. This paper reviews current thinking and policy directions in understanding religious inequalities in humanitarian contexts and asks the following questions: 1) What are the implications of programming that is blind to religious inequalities? 2) How can humanitarian actors incorporate sensitivity to religious difference and persecution in their programming, and what are the challenges of doing so?
