Every day, people perceive other people performing interactive actions. Retaining these actions of human agents in working memory (WM) plays a pivotal role in a normal social life. However, whether the semantic knowledge embedded in the interactive actions has a pervasive impact on the storage of the actions in WM remains unknown. In the current study, we investigated two opposing hypotheses: (a) that WM stores the interactions individually (the individual-storage hypothesis) and (b) that WM stores the interactions as chunks (the chunk-storage hypothesis). We required participants to memorize a set of individual actions while ignoring the underlying social interactions. We found that although the social-interaction aspect was task irrelevant, the interactive actions were stored in WM as chunks that were not affected by memory load (Experiments 1 and 2); however, inverting the human actions vertically abolished this chunking effect (Experiment 3). These results suggest that WM automatically and efficiently used semantic knowledge about interactive actions to store them and support the chunk-storage hypothesis.

Fruit were ripened at 20 °C for 3 days after 1, 3, and 6 weeks of storage at 0, 5, and 10 °C. Treatment with 1-MCP delayed the onset of climacteric ethylene production and reduced respiration in fruit held at 20 °C. 1-MCP-treated fruit were firmer than untreated controls after storage at 0 or 5 °C. 1-MCP-treated fruit also had higher titratable acidity (TA) after 1 week of storage at 0 or 5 °C, but TA was lower compared to controls after 3 or 6 weeks of storage. Fruit stored at 5 °C had more severe internal browning, lower extractable juice and TA than fruit stored at either 0 or 10 °C, however, 1-MCP treated fruit had more severe internal browning than untreated fruit after 3 and 6 weeks of storage at 5 °C. Fruit from harvest 1 treated with 1-MCP and stored at 0 °C for 6 weeks failed to soften after removal from storage. Chemical name used: 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP).

This study was conducted to investigate the stability of five commercial vitamin A products in vitamin premixes and vitamin-trace mineral premixes. The five commercial products used were: Xinhecheng, Zhejiang medicine, Kingdomway, DSM, and BASF. The vitamin A products were stored in three vitamin premixes (for suckling, weanling, and finishing pigs) or in vitamin-trace mineral (VTM) premixes (for suckling, weanling, and finishing pigs). Vitamin premixes were stored in an environmentally controlled chamber set at 25 °C and 60% humidity. The VTM premixes were stored at room temperature (approximately 22 °C). Sampling was performed on d 0, 90, 180, 270, and 360. Stability was reported as the residual vitamin A activity (% of initial) at each sampling point. For the stability of vitamin premixes, all interactive and main effects of storage time and vitamin A product were not significant. For the stability of VTM premixes, there was no significant interaction effects between storage time, vitamin A product and main effect of vitamin A product, but the main effect of storage time was significant (p < 0.01). In conclusion, a longer storage time reduced vitamin A activity in VTM premixes but there was no difference in the stability of commercially available vitamin A.

Goodey, Richard J. „Rectangular silos; Interaction of structure and stored bulk solid“. Thesis, Brunel University, 2002. http://bura.brunel.ac.uk/handle/2438/5246.

Annotation:
The main aim of this research is directed towards the study of thin-walled rectangular planform silos with a view to maximising their structural efficiency. In thin plates of the type making up the wall, membrane action may increase the load carrying capability and current design guides make no account of this. Designing rectangular silos with this in mind can lead to significant structural savings. The core of the research involves using the finite element method to study the patterns of pressure exerted by the weight of a granular bulk solid on the walls of the silo structure. The stored granular solid must use an elastic-plastic material law in order to account for large deformations that can occur in a thin-walled structure. The need for this type of constitutive law led to the investigation of bulk solid properties and shows that parameters that have previously been used to categorise bulk solids may not be sufficient to describe all aspects of their behaviour. The finite element model created uses material constitutive laws that can be found in a number of packages. The required granular material parameters can be determined from a number of simple tests. This approach aims to enable engineers to routinely use similar models when designing silos. The results obtained from the finite element model exhibited some anomalies that had been observed in previous work. These were mainly apparent in the form of localised pressure peaks near the base of the model. These effects were investigated and possible mechanisms that lead to them were proposed. The results from the finite element model were compared to previous experimental work and existing theories. The model was then used to conduct parametric surveys on square and rectangular planform silos and the distribution of pressure across the wall compared to previous predictive models. Finally, a scale thin-walled metal silo was constructed and pressure measurements on filling with pea gravel made. These are compared to predictions made by the finite element model.

With improved capabilities of network infrastructures and video compression techniques, rich multimedia applications such as video conferencing, live broadcasting news and streaming contents are dramatically boosted to clients. Many equipment venders provide robust core/access routers and L2/L3 switches for handling the huge multimedia traffics. Yet Variable-Bit-Rate (VBR) compressed video exhibits significant rate variability, even when the rate is computed over time intervals as large as several minutes. This burstiness complicates the design of efficient real-time storage, retrieval, and transport mechanisms capable of achieving high resource utilization. Therefore, a mechanism that can effectively reduce the rate variability of video data and timely send the accurate traffic information of video stream to network facilities is very important for effective resource management. On the other hand, the Resynchronization Marking (RM) scheme proposed in most video coding standards such as MPEG-4 is generally used to improve the error resilience capability of video data in the wireless network. However, if the RM scheme at the application layer is executed independently, the effective throughput of WLAN may be decreased. This phenomenon is particularly true if the multi-layer header overhead increases or the wireless channel condition changes obviously. Therefore, this dissertation proposes an Integrated End-to-End Video Delivery System (IE-VDS) that can provide robust and efficient delivery quality for pre-stored, live broadcasting and real-time videos over networks. IE-VDS includes four major parts, the Optimal Packet size Determination Mechanism (OPDM), the ρ-domain Long-Span Predictor (ρ-LSP), the Intelligent ONline Traffic Smoothing mechanism (ON-ITS), and the Deterministic OFFline Traffic Smoothing mechanism (OFF-DTS). OPDM proposes a simple yet robust closed-form that can determine accurately and timely the optimal video payload length at the video sender based on the current wireless channel condition. Whenever the optimal payload length that can maximize the WLAN throughput is determined, the RM scheme adopts the optimal payload length to packetize the video data. For executing efficient online traffic smoothing, ρ-LSP predicts the bitrate of future frames with high accuracy by utilizing the linear relationship between the cumulated frame bitrates and the total number of nonzero motion vectors and nonzero quantized coefficients of encoded frames. ON-ITS then proposes an intelligent online traffic smoothing mechanism that integrates the proposed adaptive window size method with ρ-LSP to improve the flexibility and performance of online smoothing for live broadcasting and real-time video applications. On the other hand, for delivering pre-stored video contents with deterministic QoS guarantees, OFF-DTS integrates proper traffic smoothing operations with the traditional deterministic traffic modeling scheme to reduce the playback buffer demand and data rate variation. Herein the limitation of playback buffer space, the network delay jitter, the processing load of resource management, and the QoS guarantee are considered in the proposed mechanism. Analytical and simulation results verify the accuracy and effectiveness of the proposed closed-form in OPDM. The contribution effectively improves the WLAN throughput and enhances the error resilience effect of scalable video data simultaneously. From simulation results, ON-ITS effectively reduces the transmission rate variation and the peak rate demand of real-time and live video services while remaining a low playback delay. Moreover, OFF-DTS effectively satisfies the situation of insufficient playback buffer space in mobile clients while still maintaining the advantages of deterministic services for pre-stored videos.

Computational Interaction enables a future in which user interfaces (UI) learn about people’s behaviours by observing them and interacting with them to help people to be productive, comfortable, healthy, and safe. However, this requires technology that can accurately model people’s behaviours. This chapter focuses on human routine behaviours enacted by people as sequences of actions performed in specific situations, i.e. behaviour instances, and presents a probabilistic, generative model of human routine behaviours that can describe, reason about, and act in response to people’s behaviours. We holistically define human routine behaviours to constrain the patterns extracted from the data, match routine behaviours, and estimate the likelihood that people will perform certain actions (in different situations) in a way that matches their demonstrated preference. The chapter illustrates how computational models of routines support stakeholders in making sense of stored logs of human behaviour, and designing UIs that respond to those behaviours.

In this digital world in two days we create as much information as we did from the beginning of time until 2003. The volume of data being captured and stored is mind boggling. It seems that there is quantum disruption coming in the decision-making process in the way massive amounts of data and its analysis is being used to make decisions. Data about personal choices are collected at every interaction point, data location flows through the daily use of mobile devices, and these are being used by companies for making business choices. It may seem that those who are in control of data may know more about the person than the person himself; however, if you look at Brexit and the US elections, data analytics pretty much failed to deliver significant insight.

The chapter provides a wide-ranging look at prospects for ‘the hydrogen economy’ regarding fuel. In the European Union, hydrogen may be a means to address the intermittency of supply in the renewables sector. The US emphasis on hydrogen to operate motor vehicles contrasts with the EU’s broader climate change driven move to explore alternatives to fossil fuel. Regarding drivers of energy innovation, it is striking that the US introduction of hydrogen is specifically aimed at the transport sector and was driven by security of supply reasons rather than climate change. Further technological innovation is evident in that hydrogen can be injected into the natural gas grid or stored in dedicated reservoirs. In this regard, the chapter analyses the legal innovations required, by considering the impact on and interaction with the storage provisions of the EU Gas Directive and the proposed storage provision in the recast Electricity Directive.

Annotation:
Jurisdiction is the foundational concept for both national laws and international law as it provides the link between the sovereign government and its territory, and ultimately its people. The internet challenges this concept at its root: data travels across the internet without respecting political borders or territory. This book is about this Jurisdictional Challenge created by internet technologies. The Jurisdictional Challenge arises as civil disputes, criminal cases, and regulatory action span different countries, rising questions as to the international competence of courts, law enforcement, and regulators. From a technological standpoint, geography is largely irrelevant for online data flows and this raises the question of who governs “YouTubistan.” Services, communication, and interaction occur online between persons who may be located in different countries. Data is stored and processed online in data centres remote from the actual user, with cloud computing provided as a utility. Illegal acts such as hacking, identity theft and fraud, cyberespionage, propagation of terrorist propaganda, hate speech, defamation, revenge porn, and illegal marketplaces (such as Silkroad) may all be remotely targeted at a country, or simply create effects in many countries. Software applications (“apps”) developed by a software developer in one country are seamlessly downloaded by users on their mobile devices worldwide, without regard to applicable consumer protection, data protection, intellectual property, or media law. Therefore, the internet has created multi-facetted and complex challenges for the concept of jurisdiction and conflicts of law. Traditionally, jurisdiction in private law and jurisdiction in public law have belonged to different areas of law, namely private international law and (public) international law. The unique feature of this book is that it explores the notion of jurisdiction in different branches of “the” law. It analyses legislation and jurisprudence to extract how the concept of jurisdiction is applied in internet cases, taking a comparative law approach, focusing on EU, English, German, and US law. This synthesis and comparison of approaches across the board has produced new insights on how we should tackle the Jurisdictional Challenge. The first three chapters explain the Jurisdictional Challenge created by the internet and place this in the context of technology, sovereignty, territory, and media regulation. The following four chapters focus on public law aspects, namely criminal law and data protection jurisdiction. The next five chapters are about private law disputes, including cross-border B2C e-commerce, online privacy and defamation disputes, and internet intellectual property disputes. The final chapter harnesses the insights from the different areas of law examined.

This chapter provides an overview on targeted advertisement in the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS). A new entity called Personalization and Advertisement Insertion Logic (PAIL) is introduced, which enables a mobile network operator to exploit contextual data stored in its network for personalized advertisement selection. PAIL combines location information with user profile information in order to select the best match from a pool of advertisement clips. This selection is based on the Vector Space Model. For the evaluation of this framework a series of tests with users were executed. These tests show that using contextual information from the IMS network a subjective better match of advertisement clips with user interests is achievable.

With immersive visualization the engineer has the means for vividly understanding problem causes and discovering opportunities to improve design. Software can generate an interactive world in which collaborators experience the results of complex mathematical simulations such as computational fluid dynamic (CFD) modeling. Such software, while providing unique benefits over traditional visualization techniques, presents special development challenges. The visualization of large quantities of data interactively requires both significant computational power and shrewd data management. On the computational front, commodity hardware is outperforming large workstations in graphical quality and frame rates. Also, 64-bit commodity computing shows promise in enabling interactive visualization of large datasets. Initial interactive transient visualization methods and examples are presented, as well as development trends in commodity hardware and clustering. Interactive, immersive visualization relies on relevant data being stored in active memory for fast response to user requests. For large or transient datasets, data management becomes a key issue. Techniques for dynamic data loading and data reduction are presented as means to increase visualization performance.

Abstract In a hydraulic cylinder each cylinder component contributes to the total function, and the components interact and are dependent on each other. The geometry of some components can be completely determined by other surrounding interacting components. In this work it is shown how computer aid can be applied in hydraulic cylinder design when considering component interaction. A special hydraulic cylinder product model is developed. It is stored in an external CAD system independent data base. The parameters stored in the data base are used when retrieving component data from component family data bases, standard component data bases, and when running parametric component and system design programs. The software system used in this work consists of an ordinary 2D wire frame modeling turn-key CAD system, FORTRAN application programs, a data base management system, CAD system independent data bases and CAD system dependent interface programs.

Abstract Feature modeling enables the specification of a model with standardized high-level shape aspects that have a functional meaning for design or manufacturing. In this paper an interactive graphical approach to feature-based modeling is presented. The user can represent features as new CSG primitives, specified as a Boolean combination of halfspaces. Constraints between halfspaces specify the geometric characteristics of a feature and control feature validity. Once a new feature is defined and stored in a library, it can be used in other objects and positioned, oriented and dimensioned by direct manipulation with a graphics cursor. Constraints between features prevent feature interference and specify spatial relations between features.
