This paper analyses the shifting images of Chinese medicine and rural doctors in the narratives of literature and film from 1949 to 2009 in order to explore the persisting tensions within rural medicine and health issues in China. Popular anxiety about health services and the government’s concern that it be seen to be meeting the medical needs of China’s most vulnerable citizens – its rural dwellers – has led to the production of a continuous body of literary and film works discussing these issues, such as Medical Practice Incident, Spring Comes to the Withered Tree, Chunmiao, and Barefoot Doctor Wan Quanhe. The article moves chronologically from the early years of the Chinese Communist Party’s new rural health strategies through to the twenty-first century – over these decades, both health politics and arts policy underwent dramatic transformations. It argues that despite the huge political investment on the part of the Chinese Communist Party government in promoting the virtues of Chinese medicine and barefoot doctors, film and literature narratives reveal that this rustic nationalistic vision was a problematic ideological message. The article shows that two main tensions persisted prior to and during the Cultural Revolution, the economic reform era of the 1980s, and the medical marketisation era that began in the late 1990s. First, the tension between Chinese and Western medicine and, second, the tension between formally trained medical practitioners and paraprofessional practitioners like barefoot doctors. Each carried shifting ideological valences during the decades explored, and these shifts complicated their portrayal and shaped their specific styles in the creative works discussed. These reflected the main dilemmas around the solutions to rural medicine and health care, namely the integration of Chinese and Western medicines and blurring of boundaries between the work of medical paraprofessionals and professionals.

The integration of art and science remains a popular subject until now. There are many studies on the connection between art and other scientific disciplines of the Renaissance, but there is still room to explore the relationship between art and medicine, especially with anatomy. Therefore, the paper begins with a retrospective on anatomical progress during the Renaissance and a brief introduction to Michelangelos life and his research experience in anatomy. Then, taking Michelangelos David as a critical point, several manifestations in the sculpture related to human anatomy are precisely dissected by reviewing literature and analyzing artwork. This is followed by an exploration of the reasons to the connection between art and science, ultimately illustrating the impact of this trend on modern society. The conclusions of this paper demonstrate the relationship between art and science is that art carries science, and science inspires art. The interdisciplinary convergence of the two still has a powerful vitality and profound meaning nowadays.

Background Open science practices are implemented across many scientific fields to improve transparency and reproducibility in research. Complementary, alternative, and integrative medicine (CAIM) is a growing field that may benefit from adoption of open science practices. The efficacy and safety of CAIM practices, a popular concern with the field, can be validated or refuted through transparent and reliable research. Investigating open science practices across CAIM journals by using the Transparency and Openness Promotion (TOP) guidelines can potentially promote open science practices across CAIM journals. The purpose of this study is to conduct an audit that compares and ranks open science practices adopted by CAIM journals against TOP guidelines laid out by the Center for Open Science (COS). Methods CAIM-specific journals with titles containing the words “complementary”, “alternative” and/or “integrative” were included in this audit. Each of the eight TOP criteria were used to extract open science practices from each of the CAIM journals. Data was summarized by the TOP guideline and ranked using the TOP Factor to identify commonalities and differences in practices across the included journals. Results A total of 19 CAIM journals were included in this audit. Across all journals, the mean TOP Factor was 2.95 with a median score of 2. The findings of this study reveal high variability among the open science practices required by journals in this field. Four journals (21%) had a final TOP score of 0, while the total scores of the remaining 15 (79%) ranged from 1 to 8. Conclusion While several studies have audited open science practices across discipline-specific journals, none have focused on CAIM journals. The results of this study indicate that CAIM journals provide minimal guidelines to encourage or require authors to adhere to open science practices and there is an opportunity to improve the use of open science practices in the field.

The Accordion, portable aerophone invented and patented in 1829 by Cyrill Damian in Austria, emerges in the 21st century as one of the most versatile instruments in the history of music [1]. Several factors contribute to this connection: portability, multi-timbral sound, ability to play melody and accompaniment, possibility of performing counterpoint, independence of hands, among other characteristics. In this context, the second half of the 20th century was crucial for an unprecedented development both in organological, interpretative and compositional terms. The Accordion versatility extends today from popular and traditional music to contemporary music, passing through Jazz. In the field of transcribing works, the accordion's features allow you to approach works from the Baroque, Classical, Romantic periods, among others, either solo or in chamber music. Asas, a work for Accordion, Soprano Voice, Saxophone, Viola and Cello composed by Christopher Bochmann is a good example of the integration of the Accordion in the panorama of contemporary music and in the performative relationship with other instruments.

This article delves into the phenomenon of intertextuality in the Kabyle novel, focusing on its genesis as a literary genre and the dialogic strategies employed by Kabyle authors. The 20th century witnessed a decline in Kabyle literature due to societal changes. However, a resurgence with the emergence of Kabyle novelists who skillfully incorporated oral cultural heritage into their literary works. Notably, the first written works in prose, exemplified by Belaid At-Ali's Lwali n Udrar, signified a poetic rejuvenation in Kabyle literature. Subsequently, the 1970s witnessed the rise of the Kabyle novel, influenced by the establishment of publishing houses and the imperative to express Amazigh identity. Distinguished by its unique themes, forms, geographical specificity, and cultural roots, the Kabyle novel ingeniously incorporates oral traditions, such as proverbs and popular tales, through the art of intertextuality. The integration of oral traditions serves multiple purposes, including the preservation of Kabyle society's values, the promotion of the aesthetic significance of the Kabyle language, and the expression of personal viewpoints. Kabyle novelists employ diverse approaches to incorporate proverbs, either seamlessly blending them into the narrative fabric or demarcating them with quotation marks. Likewise, popular tales are artfully interwoven into the novels, with each author offering their distinctive interpretation. The interaction with oral tradition manifests itself through the use of narrative anachronism, references to legendary figures, and the incorporation of traditional symbolism. These elements contribute significantly to the cultural and aesthetic dimensions of Kabyle novels.

Introduction and objective Open science (OS) aims to make the dissemination of knowledge and the research process transparent and accessible to everyone. With the increasing popularity of complementary, alternative, and integrative medicine (CAIM), our goal was to explore what are CAIM researchers’ practices and perceived barriers related to OS. Methods We conducted an anonymous online survey of researchers who published in journals listed in Scopus containing the words “complementary”, “alternative”, or “integrative” medicine in their names. We emailed 6040 researchers our purpose-built electronic survey after extracting their email address from one of their publications in our sample of journals. We questioned their familiarity with different OS concepts, along with their experiences and challenges engaging in these practices over the last 12 months. Results The survey was completed by 392 researchers (6.5% response rate, 97.1% completion rate). Most respondents were CAIM researchers familiar with the overall concept of OS, indicated by those actively publishing open access (OA) (n = 244, 76.0%), registering a study protocol (n = 148, 48.0%), and using reporting guidelines (n = 181, 59.0%) in the past 12 months. Preprinting, sharing raw data, and sharing study materials were less popular. A lack of funding was reported as the greatest barrier to publishing OA by most respondents (n = 252, 79.0%), and that additional funding is the most significant incentive in applying more OS practices to their research (n = 229,72.2%). With respect to preprinting barriers, 36.3% (n = 110) participants believed there are potential harms in sharing non-peer-reviewed work and 37.0% (n = 112) feared preprinting would reduce the likelihood of their manuscript being accepted by a journal. Respondents were also concerned about intellectual property control regarding sharing data (n = 94, 31.7%) and research study materials (n = 80, 28.7%). Conclusions Although many participants were familiar with and practiced aspects of OS, many reported facing barriers relating to lack of funding to enable OS and perceived risks of revealing research ideas and data prior to publication. Future research should monitor the adoption and implementation of OS interventions in CAIM.

Independent component analysis (ICA) is a matrix factorization approach where the signals captured by each individual matrix factors are optimized to become as mutually independent as possible. Initially suggested for solving source blind separation problems in various fields, ICA was shown to be successful in analyzing functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and other types of biomedical data. In the last twenty years, ICA became a part of the standard machine learning toolbox, together with other matrix factorization methods such as principal component analysis (PCA) and non-negative matrix factorization (NMF). Here, we review a number of recent works where ICA was shown to be a useful tool for unraveling the complexity of cancer biology from the analysis of different types of omics data, mainly collected for tumoral samples. Such works highlight the use of ICA in dimensionality reduction, deconvolution, data pre-processing, meta-analysis, and others applied to different data types (transcriptome, methylome, proteome, single-cell data). We particularly focus on the technical aspects of ICA application in omics studies such as using different protocols, determining the optimal number of components, assessing and improving reproducibility of the ICA results, and comparison with other popular matrix factorization techniques. We discuss the emerging ICA applications to the integrative analysis of multi-level omics datasets and introduce a conceptual view on ICA as a tool for defining functional subsystems of a complex biological system and their interactions under various conditions. Our review is accompanied by a Jupyter notebook which illustrates the discussed concepts and provides a practical tool for applying ICA to the analysis of cancer omics datasets.

Individuals seek complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) for a variety of health conditions, and yoga is a popular CAM modality. Over the past few decades, yoga has become incorporated into hundreds of healthcare facilities, most commonly in large university medical centers. While research has shown yoga to be effective in reducing symptoms and improving outcomes in chronic health conditions, most patients seek yoga therapy on their own, as few primary care practitioners have incorporated yoga therapy into their practices. The purpose of this article is to describe the efforts of the Casey Health Institute to incorporate yoga therapy into their primary care integrative medicine center. At Casey Health, a full-time Clinical Yoga Specialist works alongside the physicians, nurses, and CAM providers in delivering care to a wide variety of patients. The majority of referrals to yoga therapy have been for pain-related musculoskeletal conditions, as well as hypertension, headaches, anxiety, depression, and sleep disturbances. Most patients attend weekly 60-minute individual sessions, and the Clinical Yoga Specialist stays in touch with the patient between appointments via telephone and email. T h e Clinical Yoga Specialist has become an integral part of Casey Health, participating in collaborative medical appointments in which two CAM practitioners provide simultaneous treatments to a patient. She also participates in the clinic's ongoing weight loss program. The Clinical Yoga Specialist spends one morning each week “floating” in the clinic, when she is on-call to the practitioners to assist in treatment and/or to introduce a yoga therapy experience to the patients. These brief interventions introduce the patients to the therapeutic benefits of yoga, while simultaneously demonstrating yoga's effectiveness to the healthcare providers. Casey Health has developed a unique teacher training program whose faculty includes senior Iyengar yoga teachers as well as physicians and CAM practitioners. Casey Health is incorporating clinical outcomes into their electronic medical record that can be used internally to assess comparable effectiveness and cost effectiveness of the different treatment modalities such as yoga therapy, providing evidence that eventually may lead to yoga therapy becoming an accepted treatment that is eligible for insurance reimbursement.

The article is devoted to the description of metaphor as a model of inferential knowledge. The specifics of understanding composite metaphors, which describe the elements of the sphere of non-material world, is studied on the material of scientific and popular science texts in German. The problem is important today because of the existing linguistic interest to the processes of generation and understanding of speech. On the base of four-dimensional integration theory developed by J. Fauconnier and M. Turner the paper describes an algorithm for the interaction of mental spaces that provide understanding of complex words (composites). In the article is used the method of modeling that involves the definitional analysis, as well as methods of generalization of concepts, comparison and synthesis. The theoretical significance of the article is determined by its contribution to the solution of methodological problems of the study of inferential knowledge in the field of scientific communication; of practical value are the results concerning the principles of schematization of the process of understanding, which can be used in the disciplines of the cognitive orientation. The specificity of understanding of complex words in a scientific text is the combination in the integrated mental space (blend) of two initial spaces: the first is the basis of metaphorical transfer; it correlates with knowledge about material objects familiar to a person; the second creates the perspective of understanding these objects. The total generic mental space is a link connecting the initial spaces; it is characterized by the inclusion of knowledge about a material object within a certain subject / professional area. The result of metaphorical rethinking and modification of the total generic space is a blend – the new knowledge adapted to the conditions of professional communication. The analysis of the material made it possible to conclude that the understanding of composite metaphors is the result of the formation of integrative conceptual units in the human mind, which allows to realize the metaphor as a model of inferential knowledge that is significant for thinking.

The digitization of displaced archives is of great historical and cultural significance. Through the construction of digital humanistic platforms represented by MISS Platform, and the comprehensive application of IIIF technology, knowledge graph technology, ontology technology, and other popular information technologies. We can find that the digital framework of displaced archives built through the MISS platform can promote the establishment of a standardized cooperation and dialogue mechanism between the archives’ authorities and other government departments. At the same time, it can embed the works of archives in the construction of digital government and the economy, promote the exploration of the integration of archives management, data management, and information resource management, and ultimately promote the construction of a digital society. By fostering a new partnership between archives departments and enterprises, think tanks, research institutes, and industry associations, the role of multiple social subjects in the modernization process of the archives governance system and governance capacity will be brought into play. The National Archives Administration has launched a special operation to recover scattered archives overseas, drawing up a list and a recovery action plan for archives lost to overseas institutions and individuals due to war and other reasons. Through the National Archives Administration, the State Administration of Cultural Heritage, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Supreme People's Court, the Supreme People's Procuratorate, and the Ministry of Justice, specific recovery work is carried out by studying and working on international laws.

This chapter reviews the literature applying health behavior theories to indoor tanning. Few studies have tried to fit full versions of health behavior models to indoor tanning. Theoretical models from the family of theories referred to as the reasoned action approach (e.g., theory of planned behavior, behavioral alternative model, prototype willingness model, etc.) have been most commonly used to study indoor tanning. Results indicate that these models fit indoor tanning data moderately to extremely well. Two lesser known models, problem behavior theory and the terror management health model, have also demonstrated a reasonable fit. Two other common models, the health belief model and social cognitive theory, have never been fully tested with indoor tanning. However, key constructs from these models (e.g., perceived susceptibility and threat, modeling) have been used to understand indoor tanning. Empirical research conducted represents a solid start toward developing strong, comprehensive models of indoor tanning that can guide intervention efforts. This initial work needs to be expanded by conducting longitudinal studies and by including a broader age range in studies because the majority of existing work has focused on young adults. Incorporating findings related to tanning dependency, peer group affiliation, media influences and other constructs into these foundational models will also improve our understanding and ability to develop efficacious interventions to reduce engagement in this health risk behavior.

This chapter reviews the literature examining interventions to reduce indoor tanning (IT). The first objective was to highlight programs that show promise for large scale dissemination. The second objective was to promote criteria and standards for future intervention research efforts. The scope of interest for this review includes universal (for everyone in the population), selective (for those in the population who are at a greater risk), and indicated (for those who already are experiencing conditions that identify them as at risk) programs. The evaluation of the interventions resulted in three levels of evidence: (1) most promising, (2) emerging, and (3) mixed. For an intervention to be considered “most promising”, it was required that ten criteria be met through examination of research findings in published reports consistent with Flay and colleagues (Prev Sci 6(3):151–175, 2005). Interventions that were classified as “emerging” met most of the criteria. Finally, interventions classified as “mixed” did not reach threshold on more than two criteria that were deemed critical. The results revealed that there was very limited research on IT interventions that meet all the evaluation criteria. Only one intervention approach met all of the criteria (Appearance Booklet) (Hillhouse and Turrisi, Behav Med 25(4):395–409, 2002; Hillhouse et al., Cancer 113(11):3257–3266, 2008). Although the number of published papers in the IT area has increased dramatically over the past decade, these efforts have yet to translate into rigorously conducted intervention trials. The review points to important issues that need to be addressed in future research on the prevention of IT. Keywords

AbstractBreath and breathlessness are flashpoints in medieval literary texts. Medieval medical theories, rooted in classical thought, emphasise the bodily spirits and in particular, the ways that motions of the ‘vital spirit’—closely connected with breath—cause powerful physical responses that write emotions on the body in sighs, swoons, and even death. Physiological theory was complemented by theological notions of pneuma, the Spirit of divinity and life. The movement of breath plays a key role in depictions of emotion from love to grief, and in visionary or mystical experience. This essay explores breath and breathlessness in a range of English secular and devotional literary texts: popular romance writing, the medically alert fictions of Chaucer, and visionary works including the Revelations of Divine Love of Julian of Norwich and the spiritual autobiography of Margery Kempe. In all these works, concepts of the vital spirits and the role of breath in emotion are central. The play of breath underpins and shapes depictions of romantic love, explorations of the boundary between life and death, and ideas of spiritual revelation, creating narratives of profoundly embodied, affective experience.

Complementary therapies are popular with people who have cancer. They are used in addition to, and to complement, conventional therapies for cancer. They can be grouped together with alternative therapies, under the umbrella term complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). However, alternative therapies aim to work as a distinct alternative, rather than as a complement, to conventional therapies. Integrated or integrative health or medicine describes an approach that combines elements of both complementary and conventional therapies. Many patients find complementary therapies attractive because they are a more natural, gentle, and holistic balance to conventional cancer treatments, they improve psychological and emotional well-being, they give a greater sense of personal control, and therapists spend more time with them. Although complementary therapies do not fit easily into conventional evaluations of treatments, there is a growing evidence base for the effectiveness of some therapies. Given the concerns about possible interactions with conventional treatments, attitudes towards complementary therapies vary between individual professionals and across professions. Some doctors are reluctant to discuss the use of complementary therapies with patients or are hostile to their use, and this can lead to patients not disclosing when they are using them. Nurses, on the other hand, have been more supportive of their use and are well placed to act as ‘gatekeepers’. Some, though not all, therapies have a system of self-regulation in the United Kingdom. Nurses and other health professionals have a responsibility to discuss complementary therapies, to direct patients to reliable sources of information, and to help them make sense of their options.

Brazilian oil refineries’ environmental licensing process has been criticized for lack of healthcare aspects. Therefore, this paper aims to identify elements of bioethics that contribute to healthcare in this process. Based on an integrative review of scientific literature and on the deconstructive method proposed by Derrida, the relevance and legitimacy of bioethics to justify the relationship between morality and the consequences for individuals’, populations’, and ecosystems’ health is justified. We conclude that bioethics may contribute as a theoretical and practical tool to solve conflicts by describing existing struggles and moral dilemmas, through processes of criticism and justification and the establishment of morally acceptable measures for the protection of humans and environmental health.

Abstract Complementary and integrative medicine (CIM) approaches are among the most popular and widely utilized treatments in Tourette syndrome (TS). CIM approaches most frequently reported to be used by patients with TS are dietary modification, allergy treatment, prayer, vitamins, massage, nutritional and dietary supplements, chiropractic manipulation, meditation, yoga, acupuncture, hypnosis, homeopathy, and biofeedback. Research evidence suggests that a number of CIM approaches are potentially useful in TS, yet there are methodological limitations in all studies. The approaches that appear to have most promise based on the evidence to date are 5-Ling Granule, hypnosis, biofeedback, ω3 fatty acids, cannabinoids, and Ningdong granule.

Secondary plant metabolites, such as essential oils from the Caatinga, have diverse therapeutic properties, including antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory action. Studies highlight its effectiveness against infections, promoting alternative use in medicine. The research addressed in this work provides a comprehensive view of the therapeutic potential of essential oils extracted from medicinal plants found in the Caatinga Morphoclimatic Domain, located in Northeast Brazil. Thus, this is a systematic review of the qualitative literature, based on descriptors that follow the direction of the Health Sciences Descriptors (DeCS), used in the VHL (Virtual Health Library) search engine: "Caatinga", "Medicinal Plants", "Volatile Oils", "Anti-inflammatory", "Antibacterial", "Antiparasitic" and "Antioxidant", which were applied in the following databases: Scielo; Medline; Lilacs; PubMed and Elsevier. Several plant species and their respective essential oils were investigated, highlighting their antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and antiparasitic properties. The results showed that the essential oils of Caatinga plants have a wide range of chemical compounds, such as terpenes, aldehydes, phenols and esters, which confer their medicinal properties. These compounds have the potential to be used as therapeutic alternatives in the treatment of various health conditions, including bacterial, parasitic and inflammatory infections. In addition, the study highlights the importance of preserving the biodiversity of the Caatinga and the traditional knowledge associated with the use of medicinal plants in the region. The integration between popular knowledge and scientific research is essential to fully explore the therapeutic potential of these plants, contributing to the promotion of public health and the development of new therapies. In addition, it is essential to ensure sustainable practices for the use and management of medicinal plants in the Caatinga, to preserve their biodiversity and the ancestral knowledge associated with their use.

Popularized by scientists in the 1970s, adaptive management is an integrative, multi-disciplinary approach to managing landscapes and natural resources. Despite its broad appeal many critics complain that adaptive management rarely works in practice as prescribed in theory. This chapter traces the history and evolution of the concept and assess its implementation challenges. One reason adaptive management has not always delivered on its promise to make natural resource management more “rational” is that in the real world of policymaking scientists and natural resource managers must contend with advocates that have conflicting values and goals. Scientists and managers also operate in the context of institutions that create particular constraints and opportunities, and are generally inflexible and resistant to change. In recognition of these sociopolitical realities, the focus of much adaptive management practice and scholarship has shifted to governance, particularly collaboration with stakeholders, transformation of the institutions responsible for management, and the process of social learning.

Web 2.0 technologies are being rapidly integrated in higher education, which dramatically influences the ways learners approach and use information. Knowledge transfer has evolved into a two-way process. Users no longer simply consume and download information from the web; they create and interact with it. Several theoretical works were developed in order to discuss the possibilities of integration of Web 2.0 tools in Pharmacy, Medicine, Allied Health, Nursing and many other Biomedical Areas. Other works have started gathering qualitative and quantitative evidence of the importance of Web 2.0 tools in the learning process. By performing this integrative review, this paper will provide an overview of what is being done in biomedical and pharmaceutical education, and elaborate some of the potential opportunities and challenges that these applications present. With this updated review we hope to give our contribution to consolidate research in this promising area.
