Telehealth initiated a transformation in the realm of innovative strategies to meet the demands of an ever-changing health care system. Adapting provisions to new delivery care models such as telehealth is one way to improve access to care. The purpose of this project was to explore evidence of best practices in telehealth through an extensive, systematic literature review. The practice-focused question focused on identifying advantages of and barriers to the use of telehealth for improving patient satisfaction and quality of care. The plan-do-study-act cycle served as a model for accelerating quality improvement through improved systems of practice, and the Critical Appraisal Skills Program tool was used to identify factors in the literature that indicated the clinical effectiveness of telehealth and the contributions of information technology to patient outcomes throughout the care continuum. Applying Melnyk and Fineout-Overholt's model, which consists of 7 levels for grading evidence, 11 articles were identified as meeting the inclusion criteria. With respect to comparing telehealth services, this review identified areas for future research, including how telehealth can be used to bridge the gap between hospital and home with the integration of telehealth being integrated into routine care as a means to deliver medical, health, and educational services that contribute to improving patient outcomes. The implications of this project related to social change include supporting evidence that positive change is possible when modalities of health care delivery include the patient as part of care, benefiting both patient and provider.

Several environmental issues are incrementing systematically, and many of them are linked to manufacturing activities. To mitigate these issues, it is necessary to develop sustainability solutions in the early stages of the innovation process, where there is room for creativity and innovation. The integration of sustainability at the strategic level of the company, where the essential decisions, the strategic plan, and the portfolio are developed, might ensure the implementation of sustainability aspects in products and services. Many companies develop product portfolios to organize and offer services, products, technologies and operations following the company strategy and targets. The portfolio components are assessed and selected using evaluation criteria. The most common criteria include: cost, quality, risk, revenue, time and market position. Usually sustainability is not included in the portfolio evaluation criteria. The aim of this research is to obtain a better understanding of how sustainability can be integrated in the product portfolio development of manufacturing companies. The main research targets are to: 1) define sustainability product portfolio based on a comprehension of the academic and industry perspectives, 2) identify how companies currently implement sustainability in their portfolio, 3) determine which evaluation criteria and tools are used for portfolio development and 4) how the product portfolio is developed, implemented and managed. A systematic literature review was performed to understand the state of the art about sustainability product portfolio. The literature review results supported the development of semi-structure interviews with companies and field experts. The interviews outcome provided a better understanding of the industry perspective. Afterwards, a workshop helped to understand what aspects are more significant for the portfolio evaluation criteria. Finally, a strategic sustainability assessment tool SLCA 2.0 was used to assess a technology product portfolio of a specific industry case. The results from the studies created a foundation to: a) determine the state of art of the sustainability product portfolio field and its relevance for integration and implementation of sustainability in the early stages of the product innovation process, b) define the concept of sustainability product portfolio, c) have a better understanding of the setting and the application of the portfolio evaluation criteria and how to include sustainability in the evaluation, d) identify key factors to integrate and implement sustainability in the product portfolio, e) apply and test a tool for assessing a technology portfolio from a sustainability perspective and f) create a prototype of a model to develop  the product portfolio with a strategic sustainability perspective. This research provides a knowledge foundation of how sustainability can be integrated in product portfolio. In future research a model will be developed to support companies of how to include a strategic sustainability perspective into their product portfolio to enhance development of more sustainable solutions.

Leaders at nonprofit academic institutions are following the global business trend of embracing sustainability initiatives for positive social change; however, there has been slow growth in sustainability reporting among academic institutions. The purpose of this study was to explore the strategies and processes necessary for leaders and managers to integrate sustainability reporting into the reporting cycle for a nonprofit higher education institution. I conducted a single case study of a nonprofit academic institution that utilized sustainability reporting. The study sample consisted of 4 leaders and managers at a nonprofit academic institution located in the state of Michigan that published sustainability reports. The conceptual framework used for the study was corporate social responsibility (CSR), sustainability, and triple bottom line (TBL). The data collection process included interviews with leaders and managers involved in the sustainability reporting process and document reviews of the sustainability report and annual reports. I used a data-driven coding approach for data analysis. The codes were linked to create categories, and the categories led to the development of themes. The results revealed 5 themes regarding the sustainability reporting process, including the steps of the sustainability reporting process and the collaborative process in sustainability reporting. The implications for positive social change included the potential for greater transparency for students, faculty, staff, administration and community partners, and greater effectiveness of the implementation of environmental, economic, and social initiatives for higher education institutions and the community.

The fashion industry is the second dirtiest industry that pollutes the planet. H&M is one of many fashion brands that strive to improve the environment by introducing sustainable products and initiatives. This research aims to study how H&M communicate sustainability in the fashion industry context during the selected period. The data is mainly collected from Instagram, the most popular communication platform in the fashion industry and supported by data from brick-and-mortar stores, the website and the semi-structured interview. To fully understand the case, this research identifies H&M brand identity and brand extension in sustainability. The fashion brand communication and sustainability communication are the main theoretical framework of the study. The methods of the study are semi-constructed interview and content analysis. The brand identity of H&M is found to be positivity, collectivity, and inclusivity and openness, trendsetter and youthful. The brand extension at H&M can be found in several levels from the establishment of the H&M Foundation to Conscious collection and Conscious Exclusive collection. H&M applies several of fashion brand communication strategic tools to communicate sustainability. The obstacles and limitations of H&M are found to be a conflict of interest between the business and sustainability, downplayed by the nature of fast fashion, an inconsistency of communication, and difficulty to access to the sustainability information. It is found that the unique characteristics of the fashion industry and the creation of brand identity can solve the normalisation paradox of sustainability communication discourse, as well as overcome five barriers from greening. At the same time, the weakness is the decreasing of potential to create reflexivity of sustainability issues which is due to the language and tone of communication. Another weakness is the decreasing potential of sustainability to be normalised in the fashion industry which is due to the number of information available from the brand.

The output characteristic of a photovoltaic (PV) module varies as the environmental conditions of the module’s operation change. Changes in operating temperature and incident sunlight dynamically change the maximum power available from a PV module, as well as the output voltage. The output voltage of the PV generating system must be regulated, in order to ensure proper power quality for connection to an electrical load, building electric power system, or the electric grid.

PV modules are typically connected in series strings and parallel arrays to create PV generating systems. Non-uniform environmental conditions create voltage mismatches throughout PV generating systems. A mismatch between module voltages can severely reduce the amount of power available from the overall generating system. These system losses can be eliminated by regulating the output voltage of each module.

This dissertation proposes a power electronic device that fulfills two objectives: extracting maximum power from the single PV module, and regulating the output voltage to ensure a constant value. This dissertation reviews the analytical design of such a system, and validates this design in simulation, utilizing MATLAB/SIMULINK and ANSYS Simplorer.

This study aims to draw attention to a new concept within the tourism industry that integrates citizen science into an ecotourism product. The merge of citizen science and ecotourism shows potential to play a role in strategic sustainable development and to give ecotourism providers a competitive advantage in the market. However, the environmental and social benefits of this concept can only be realized if it is applied correctly. The framework for strategic for strategic sustainable development (FSSD) was used to address the complexity surrounding ecotourism and the use of citizen science. The study used a mixed method research design by conducting exploratory interviews, and then distributing a questionnaire to validate the qualitative findings. Results demonstrate that the merge of citizen science and ecotourism could contribute to sustainability through education, conservation, local community engagement, and the increased environmental awareness of the travellers. Additionally, it demonstrates that the integration of citizen science in an ecotourism product might create business benefits for the ecotourism providers in conjunction with a dynamic learning experience for the consumer. This study makes adaptions to a widely used citizen science toolkit and recommends appropriate changes to the process in order to ensure that it is effective for ecotourism providers while incorporating sustainability throughout the product design phase.

The purpose of this study was to increase the knowledge for both academia and practitioners on how to integrate sustainability aspects in product development by studying current research and comparing these findings to empirical material retrieved from an industrial company. Seco, which functioned as the case company of this study, was used as the source for the empirical data collection. The study used a deductive research approach, which implicates that the literature has steered the collection of the empirical material. In the literature, eight key drivers and seven challenges for sustainable product development were identified to be significantly important. The drivers were categorized as either internal or external for an organization and the challenges were all categorised as internal. Of these eight drivers, one internal and one external driver was identified at Seco to be particularly important. The internal driver was the corporate sustainability strategy from Sandvik Group, which is the corporation Seco is part of, and the external driver was upcoming and existing regulations. Moreover, all six challenges were found to be relevant for Seco. These were handling trade-off situations, short-term economic thinking, lack of information in early phases of product development, measuring sustainability, sustainability strategy remains at the strategic level, and perceived risk of implementing sustainability. This study also examined what attributes that are important in decision support tools to enable the integration of sustainability aspects in product development. To identify important attributes in this study, Seco’s current decision support tools at the strategic, tactical, and operational planning levels were analysed by putting the theoretical framework in relation to the empirical material. From the analysis, the initial seven attributes from the theoretical framework were complemented with the following five attributes identified as important: a top-down approach that focuses on integrating sustainability on all planning levels of the product development process, enabling follow-up on strategic decisions, reduce the room for free interpretations, reduce the complexity and amount of time to use decision support tools, and lastly methodologies to support the collection of the required information to use decision support tools. Thus, it is emphasized that researchers and practitioners continue to develop new and existing decision support tools so that the sustainability of products can be defined and measured. A focus on developing methodologies that guides how the required information can be obtained to use decision support that incorporates all life-cycle phases of a product is also identified as important.

Organizations state that their responsibilities are growing and that one of the most common issues is how to integrate CSR internally with the business, where the main problem is how CSR should be evaluated. The connection between CSR integration and improvement has been unclear regarding what improvement means and how it is achieved. Interviews have been conducted with large businesses who have experience in CSR evaluation and sustainability reporting, in order to investigate; In the context of large business organizations, how can CSR be evaluated in terms of sustainability reporting, in order to understand the internal connection between integration and improvement? Research findings emphasize that CSR has transformed into the wider concept sustainability. Sustainability reporting has become institutionalized in large businesses. However, how to conduct sustainability reporting is not fully institutionalized since businesses can select what to include. Internal techniques are considered more important for the evaluation than the report itself. The analytical model is confirmed to an extent because the connection is concluded as a constant process. Particularly, because improvement is not always aimed for, since it can hinder other essential techniques. Finally, improvement is diffuse with different meanings in different industries, which should be encountered carefully.

The increasing global challenges, such as natural disasters, poverty and many others, pose new threats to societies and businesses. Therefore, companies increase their engagement in Corporate Sustainability (CS), which connects social, environmental and economic responsibilities. Through this approach, CS aims at overcoming environmental and social constraints in a business context to increase competitiveness in today’s fast-changing world. This fast pace, with which the business environment changes, is related to external influences, such as the above-mentioned climate change, and to fundamental structural developments. One of those is the increasing number of emerging-market companies (EMNCs) that internationalize rapidly through cross-border M&A deals, also into developed markets. Since both trends, the increase in CS engagement and the growing international M&A activity of EMNCs, gain in practical and academic importance, we conducted our study under the following research question. How is CS integrated on a strategic level after a cross-border acquisition by an EMNC? The theoretical angle from which we approached the topic aligns with the resource-based view, including the natural-resource-based view, and a stakeholder perspective. When reviewing the literature regarding CS, it became clear that substantial outcomes are still lacking despite an increasing commitment to CS. This difficulty can be linked to the variety of interpretations regarding the conception of CS and the resulting confusion among implicated parties. The review of M&A literature, with a special focus on EMNCs, revealed that these companies deploy a unique approach, which is characterized by the soft post-M&A integration of the target to allow organizational learning within both businesses. Therefore, our empirical research aimed at exploring how the strategic CS of both companies, the target and the parent, influence each other and thus, develop towards a common CS strategy. The longitudinal single case study we selected, allowed us to investigate this research proposal. Through the collection and analysis of documentary data enriched by semi-structured interviews, our study revealed the following. The exchange of knowledge and CS-related communication represented the basis for the integration of strategic CS as it nurtures organizational learning. Consequently, the CS strategies of both companies increased in maturity, which means that their sophistication evolved. In addition, we also found that the target developed towards a more permissive sustainability to align with its parent company’s CS strategy. Our main study contributions relate to an enhancement of the theoretical knowledge in the related fields. Besides this, we also identified critical practical issues, such as the importance of establishing a common conception of CS to ensure a successful CS integration on a strategic level.

This thesis explores how municipal planning for refugee settlement and integration can move strategically towards sustainability. A conceptual framework was developed by integrating the Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development with best practices and recommendations identified in the literature. A case study was conducted in Karlskrona, Sweden, to investigate how a municipality plans to settle and integrate a large and unprecedented influx of refugees, and to assess how the constructed Framework can assist in planning. Semi-structured interviews with stakeholders in the Karlskrona Municipality were conducted. Keywords from the constructed Framework were used as a priori codes, to analyze the data obtained in the interviews. As perceived in our case study there is no full understanding of the importance of reaching Social Sustainability and all the essential aspects needed to achieve it.

Dietary choices have a direct impact on the environment, contributing to climate change, biodiversity loss and water scarcity among others. Furthermore, food choices influence health. Red meat and processed foods high in sugar, salt, are associated with chronic disease and cancer. Recent recommendations are calling for “The Great Food Transformation” with significant reductions in meat and processed food to improve both planetary and human health. While some dietary guidelines are starting to include envi- ronmental concepts in the general population, a better understanding of the environmental impact (EnvI) of food production and consumption patterns is needed to support its inclusion also in active individuals and athletes. The aim of this research was to validate the Athlete’s Plate (AP) nutrition educational tool, calculate its EnvI and integrate sustainability principles in a revised AP. The AP is a visual tool for athletes and active individuals to adjust food intake to training load. In athletes energy and nutrient needs exceed those of the general population to ensure maintenance of health and promote optimum adaptation to training. Sport nutrition guidelines are generally focused on higher energy, carbohydrate and fat intake with in- creased training load. Further, the quality of nutrients, especially from animal protein, is a critical element of the athlete’s diet for optimal muscle development and repair. While protein recommendations are rel- atively modest for athletes, recent evidence and trends show higher amounts, especially from meat and dairy. This raises concern, as these foods contribute to environmental degradation. In addition, there is a significant gap in research on plant-based diets relative to muscle protein balance. Considering that animal protein has a higher EnvI than plant protein, it is important to evaluate the AP to ensure it meets sport nutrition guidelines and is practically useful in athletes, to quantify the EnvI of the AP through Life Cycle Assessment and identify hotspots to decrease impact in athletes, and to develop a revised AP that meets both guidelines for sport nutrition and sustainability. Contribution I, “Eat as If You Could Save the Planet and Win!” Sustainability Integration into Nutrition for Exercise and Sport analyzes the current body of literature and highlights the need for better inclusion of sustainability in sport nutrition. Contribution II, Validation of the Athlete’s Plate Nutrition Educational Tool: Phase I, confirms the AP as a valid sport nutrition tool for energy and macronutrients except for pro- tein. Contribution III, The Athlete’s Plate Education Program: An Experiential Intervention, shows that the program provides athletes sufficient knowledge to apply the AP model in a practical setting. Contribution IV, The Environmental Impact of the Athlete’s Plate Nutrition Education Tool shows that the EnvI of the AP varies with training load, meal type, and sex, being higher by males, dinner and hard training days. It is also dependent on the animal protein content on the plates (higher with higher meat and diary), but it is not the only concern as other variables have to be taken into account such as: processing, RD variability and fresh food. In conclusion, this study validates the AP, highlights the usefulness of the AP Educational Program, and quantifies the AP’s EnVI, emphasizing the need to integrate sustainability principles into sport nutrition tools for athletes and active individuals.

The attention to sustainability impacts arising during the lifecycle of products is growing as industry wants to increase its contribution to a sustainable society. To do so, companies must find ways to navigate the complexity of the needs within the socio-ecological system in which they operate. In engineering design projects, the interpretation of needs into requirements is essential, as they represent the collective understanding of the design problem to be solved. Ideally, requirements are possible to verify and validate, which makes it challenging for industry to integrate socio-ecological considerations, often based on qualitative models, into requirements. Sustainability then tends not to be prioritized in trade-offs with traditionally identified requirements for engineering design. A qualitative research approach within design research methodology framed a sequence of studies guided by the research question ‘How can requirements be utilized to support Sustainable Product Development?’ First, a research gap was identified from a literature review which indicated a lack of socio-ecological systems contextualization in the identification, as well as the traceability of sustainability criteria to integrate into requirements. Secondly, a conceptual model was established for how management of requirements can be improved to facilitate traceability, as well as how contextual socio-ecological systems perspective can be introduced in the selection, of sustainability criteria for engineering design projects. For this purpose, the results from a multiple-case study based on semi-structured interviews with seven design and manufacturing companies was triangulated with findings of an in-depth literature analysis. Five key elements of management of sustainability in requirements were proposed in a profile model corresponding to different levels of sustainability maturity. A third study explored, based on literature and prototype causal loop diagramming, the potential of a group model building approach to enhance contextual understanding of strategically identified, i.e., company-tailored, sustainability criteria in relation to traditional requirements in early phases of the product innovation process. A final study investigated how a strategic sustainability perspective can be integrated with engineering design methods and value modelling to create a decision support for concept selection. The studies together indicate that key constituents of good requirements, traceability and systems contextualization, can be achieved also for socio-ecological sustainability considerations. This requires organizational commitment and will be reflected in the design of the operational management system for their product innovation process. Following the proposed five key elements of sustainability integration in requirements, a company is expected to increase the organizational sustainability maturity, and hence its capability to contribute to a sustainability transition. This research also shows that there is a gap in current methods and tools for enhanced socio-ecological systems contextualization. The two last studies of this thesis give promising approaches of tools and methods to be further developed and analyzed, namely group model building, system analysis and value modelling.

This research study evaluated and assessed the extent to which strategic management processes integrated economic, environmental and social sustainability elements in the fiveyear strategy (2012) of Elundini Local Municipality (ELM). The study focused on three areas of strategic management, that is, environmental analysis, strategic direction and strategy formulation. The study also looked at possible reasons for sustainability integration in ELM strategy or lack thereof and also recommended possible solutions. The literature reviewed revealed that there was adequate basis for municipalities to integrate sustainable development in their strategies even though sustainability was noted as an evolving, complex and changing phenomenon. Local Agenda 21 principles, national legislative & policy framework, regulations and other relevant guidelines were found to be adequate for municipalities to develop credible sustainability strategies. The objectives of the study were achieved by data collected through the review of existing literature; the review of ELM Five Year Strategy (2012-2017); and SIAT-based questionnaires that were filled in by ELM employees. The results of the study showed that economic and social sustainability activities were identified most in the ELM strategy compared to environmental sustainability. The study then mainly recommended the review of the current strategy in order to improve all areas of strategy formulation; introduction of Economic, Social and Environmental sustainability – Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats (ESEs-SWOT) for internal analysis as an improvement of SWOT analysis; introduction of Sustainability Integration and Strategic Management Framework (SISMF) as an improvement to existing framework.

Floating homes in the Netherlands are presented to consumers as a new sustainable and adaptable technology to climate change. With the rainfall increasing and flood levels rising in the Netherlands, there is a chance that the country can be inhabitable. Many countries throughout the world are adapting sustainable techniques into their public policies to fight off climate change. Sustainable technologies allow for certain countries to move forward with a new market trend in order to keep up with international competition. The Dutch government specifically has a reputation of inertia throughout policy making, but now the Dutch have a new environmentally sustainable technology that has a chance to change the market. That technology is the alternative housing option called a floating home. The combination of a technology marketed as sustainable while surrounding a valued cultural symbol, such as water, is not based on the environmental agenda, but for the public policy makers to gain power over an elite target market by using a specific marketing power.

With the lack of change throughout the Dutch government and culture, there has to be a question of whether this new technology has been introduced as a chance to develop a new social construct within the targeted elite class. In order to better distinguish this answer, thematic interviews were set up to sort out key themes that would help generalize the true meaning of these floating homes. With key points developed from experts in the field, it helped understand analyzation of specific case studies. The results of both interviews and case studies were then blanketed by a theory based on culture, knowledge, and power. The basis of the conclusion is that the floating homes were not necessarily developed for sustainable use like they were advertised for, but were developed to create profits and societal change to gain governmental power that the Netherlands once lacked.

The process industries are characterized by the significant consumption of fresh resources. This is a critical issue, which calls for an effective strategy towards more sustainable operations. One approach that favors sustainability and resource conservation is material recycle and/or reuse. In this regard, an integrated framework is an essential element in sustainable development. An effective reuse strategy must consider the process as a whole and develop plant-wide strategies. While the role of mass and energy integration has been acknowledged as a holistic basis for sustainable design, it is worth noting that there are many design problems that are driven by properties or functionalities of the streams and not by their chemical constituency. In this dissertation, the notion of componentless design, which was introduced by Shelley and El-Halwagi in 2000, was employed to identify optimal strategies for resource conservation, material substitution, and overall process integration. First, the focus was given on the problem of identifying rigorous targets for material reuse in property-based applications by introducing a new property-based pinch analysis and visualization technique. Next, a non-iterative, property-based algebraic technique, which aims at determining rigorous targets of the process performance in materialrecycle networks, was developed. Further, a new property-based procedure for determining optimal process modifications on a property cluster diagram to optimize the allocation of process resources and minimize waste discharge was also discussed. In addition, material substitution strategies were considered for optimizing both the process and the fresh properties. In this direction, a new process design and molecular synthesis methodology was evolved by using the componentless property-cluster domain and Group Contribution Methods (GCM) as key tools in developing a generic framework and systematic approach to the problem of simultaneous process and molecular design.

Following the suggestions of the UNEP/SETAC Life Cycle Initiative publications on Life Cycle Management (LCM) as a business management approach to improve sustainability performance, this research explored LCM as a promising research area that could help identify the factors that influence the integration of sustainability aspects into organisational processes. The initial research strategy was comprised of LCM literature analysis to explore LCM and identify potential factors that could direct the data collection. The analysis of the LCM literature shows that LCM is vaguely described. This research analysis puts into context the various LCM approaches through the introduction of the four LCM elements. The LCM elements were used as a frame to analyse the LCM cases found in the literature and identify the factors that influence integration of sustainability in organisational processes. The next stage of the research strategy was to conduct action research studies to explore in close proximity the integration of sustainability aspects in organisational processes. Two in depth action research studies were conducted, influenced by engaged scholarship. During Case A, the LCM elements were used in practice to influence the project whilst the LCM factors were observed in practice. Case A demonstrated the complexity of sustainability-related information integration in organisational processes and the division of information flows towards different organisational functions to inform their own decision. The analysis highlighted that developing knowledge is a key LCM factor that influences the application of LCM. As the importance of developing knowledge became apparent, a novel sustainability related intellectual capital (SrIC) framework was developed then used during Case B. This framework is shown to assist the sustainability professionals of Company B in enhancing the sustainability related intellectual capital of the company, which in turn led to more effective sustainability integration. This research used LCM as a ‘vehicle’ to explore the integration of sustainability aspects into organisational processes and hence contribute to the LCM literature with the four LCM elements framework of analysis, descriptions of the factors that influence the application of LCM, bringing a focus on the importance of developing knowledge for the effective application of LCM, and identifying the intellectual capital factors that influence the integration of sustainability aspects into organisational processes.

Increasing attention to sustainability and environmental concerns implies changes in consumer preferences, whereof companies need to provide offerings characterized with a focus on sustainability laden concepts such as the Circular Economy (CE), aligning with these changes. How to communicate sustainability has therefore become a focus of attention when formulating marketing strategies. However, sustainability is a complex concept and it could therefore be questioned whether everyone irrespective of, for instance, gender, age, education and other personal attributes perceive it similarly and display similar attitudes toward the concept. Based on a quantitative online survey with 1010 participants, this study examines the impact of personal attributes on the receptiveness of sustainability communication and customer loyalty in the context of Peer to Peer (P2P) marketplace platforms, and discerns how sustainability communication and customer loyalty are interrelated. Also, it explores whether sustainability communication from providers of P2P marketplace platforms can be considered to play a role in accelerating the transition to a CE. Findings suggest that personal attributes affect the receptiveness of sustainability communication and loyalty intentions, this was particularly evident for females and individuals living a sustainable lifestyle. The findings also reveal a positive relation between sustainability communication and customer loyalty, where environmental engagement, consistency between preferences for a certain appeal and actions made on the basis of the same preference, along with trustworthy content seem to strengthen that relationship. Lastly, the findings conclude that sustainability communication from P2P marketplace platforms providers can increase the number of individuals trading pre-owned items which implies for more people participating in resource-efficient activities, which ultimately fosters a CE.

This research study measures the impact of academic engagement and operational engagement, the strategies that are used by business schools for sustainability integration. The effectiveness of these strategies is studied through their impact on business students’ sustainability perception, their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) attitude, and their current behavior regarding sustainability. It is a quantitative study in which Independent sample t-test is used based on sample of 158 business students from Jonkoping International Business School and Gothenburg School of Business, Economics, and Law. Our findings suggest that the impact of sustainability integration strategies used by business schools is significantly different, that is to say that business school that is using operational engagement in addition to academic engagement is more effective than the business school that is using academic engagement only for sustainability integration. More specifically we found that business students’ sustainability perception, their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) attitude and their current behavior regarding sustainability is better in school using operational engagement as compared to the business school that is not using operational engagement. This implies that for sustainability integration it is important to provide practical demonstration and opportunities to business students in order to make them responsible future business leaders.

The UN has challenged higher education to integrate sustainability across all disciplines, declaring 2005-2014 the Decade for Educational for Sustainable Development (DESD) (UNESCO, 2003). Education for sustainable development (ESD), a UNESCO initiative, advocates for reorienting education away from the industrial model of education, and has significant pedagogical implications for cultivating knowledge, skills, and values thought to support sustainable development (Rode & Michelsen, 2008; Sterling, 2004). Responsive action to this call has been sluggish (Everett, 2008; Rode & Michelsen, 2008). Concurrently, product development and design protocol is becoming more progressive in an effort to limit the impact of products on people and the planet, and there is an urgent need to evolve apparel and textile (AT) curriculum to better prepare undergraduates for this evolution. ESD may provide a way forward, but little is known about how it may succeed current educational practice or how such practice may impact learners in AT. The purpose of this study was to examine the learning and development experience of students enrolled in an apparel product development (APD) course that has been redeveloped according to the ESD framework. A qualitative case study was conducted during one semester to examine how students experienced the course. Data collection included student reflective writings, focus group interviews, and a researcher reflexive journal. Also, a survey was utilized to determine how students perceived their progress in the development of skills related to ESD. Both theory-driven and inductive coding procedures were used to identify themes across the qualitative data. A repeated measures ANOVA was used to analyze the quantitative survey data. Results of the study indicate that students yielded a positive, though challenging, learning and development experience in the course, and one that was considered exceptional in comparison to other courses in the same program. Among the learning and development outcomes experienced in the course considered most important, according to students, were sustainability literacy and the development of change agent skills. Further, the pedagogical perspectives of ESD which influenced the course redevelopment were perceived to be highly impactful. The study has identified pedagogical and curriculum design approaches which may be used to integrate sustainability more effectively into the AT curriculum and better foster the development of change agent skills.

This thesis analyzes the environmental impacts of Transportation Network Companies, particularly in California, with respect to travel behavior, congestion, and fuel efficiency. The analysis suggests that fuel efficient taxis are being replaced by less fuel efficient Uber and Lyft vehicles. Linear regressions were run on data from the Clean Vehicle Rebate Project’s Electric Vehicle Consumer Survey of electric vehicle owners in California. The findings indicate that Uber drivers are more reliant upon the state rebate than the general population of electric vehicle owners in California.

Background – Design for longevity stand in strong contrast to the dominant model of fast fashion, where mass-production, low prices and poor quality is the characteristics. The fast-paced model is linked to environmental degradation and there is a need for a systemic change in the system. Design for longevity has been identified as one of the most effective means to reduce environmental impacts, however there are significant gaps in knowledge in relation to garment longevity and its integration within fashion brands. As the active lifetimes of garments are decreasing, resulting in a truck full of textiles and clothing reaching landfill evert second (EllenMacArthurFoundation 2017). This shows that consumers have fleeting relationships with their garment and product attachment has decreased, which shows that there is a need for strategies that facilitate product attachment to help facilitate more circularity within textiles and clothing. Emotional durability has been highlighted as an approach to design for longevity, it’s a new research area that tries to understand the complex interchange between consumption, the meaning of products and relationships between people and products. Emotional durability focuses on ways to prolong the use of products to extend the lifetimes and thereby decreasing the need for early garment replacement.  Purpose – This study focuses on understanding the phenomenon of emotional durability and its integration possibilities in textiles and clothing companies. The purpose for this thesis is to expand on current knowledge on emotional durability from a brand perspective, through highlighting the challenges and enablers for emotional durability. Using design thinking to understand it’s integration potential, through collaboration and iterative feedback loops to push innovation and build resilience into product-user relationships.  Methodology – The research was conducted using a single case study with an abductive approach. The research builds on the theoretical perspective of IDEO (nd) design thinking theory. Semi-structured interviews with a Swedish fashion and lifestyle company, including employees within the design, sustainability, quality and communications departments provided the basis for collecting primary data. The primary data was supplemented with secondary data which included website articles, sustainability reports and internal documents. The data was analysed qualitatively through thematic content analysis which was triangulated.  Findings – The results of the study, shows that emotional durability can be enabled through a range of strategies including personalisation, transparency, graceful ageing, functionality. These strategies can be supported by services provided by brands, where communicative education plays a supporting role in helping build relationship which can ensure better product retention. The results further highlighted that using design thinking theory can help overcome some of the challenges that was found within emotional durability. Through continuous collaboration both across departments, but also with stakeholders and competitors a knowledge sharing platform can be built, which can ensure better opportunities within emotional durability and thereby designing for longevity.  Practical implications and research limitations - This research contributes to creating new insight into a relatively unexplored area, emotional durability from a brand perspective and the integration through the use of strategies and services. Thus, aiding brands to gain more understanding in the integration and thereby providing solutions that can facilitate longevity. The study is limited by the choice of case-company, which is a Swedish Fashion and lifestyle company.

Several researchers have said that the real solution to alleviating, or at least reducing, the level of poverty is not to view poor people as customers; instead it is important to integrate these people into the value chain of Multi-national Corporations (Karnani, 2007; London, 2004; SEKN, 2001). The objective of this research work is to analyze how companies with sustainability initiatives can generate better individual performance through the creation of empowerment in the LIS. First I developed a theoretical framework after conducting 47 in-depth interviews with key participants of one sustainable initiative in Mexico. I found, initially, that other variables like trust, coping strategy and risk aversion can moderate the direct and positive relationship between psychological empowerment and individual performance. Then I applied the surveys to 204 participants of this sustainability initiative. To test the hypotheses, I used PLS-SEM and analyzed the surveys in two groups (Belong, N=85) and (Belonged, N=119). In both groups, I confirmed the positive relationship between psychological empowerment and individual performance, I found also that coping strategy moderates in both conditions of this relationship; however, I cannot demonstrate that risk aversion moderates in any condition. Finally, I demonstrate that trust moderates the relationship, also. Theoretical and managerial implications as well limitations and future research avenues are discussed.

The major part of the island school groups in South-West Thailand is comprised of remote areas, which are under development and lack facilities and basic needs. Most people on the islands are poor Thai gypsies living in temporary shelters or small boats. They have distinctively different origins, cultures and languages. Developing the infrastructures in this area is a low priority on the government's list. Only a marginal percentage of the budget is being spent in the development of gypsy people, especially on their education. This has in turn become a major hurdle for the acceptance and implementation of the new Information Communication and Technology (ICT) in the island school's group sector. The schools generally have an inappropriate infrastructure, inadequate teachers and huge limitations in education resources. ICT implementation has been carried out by the Ministry Of Education (MOE) to assist in teaching, learning and school administration. In examining the ways in which ICT integration has been administered and used in island schools, the study investigated the roles of two different levels of the educational system: 1) The Satun Education Service Area (Satun ESA), located on the mainland; and 2) an island school group, located in the Andaman sea. The Linstone's Multiple Perspectives Model provided a framework for data collection and the organisation of results in a qualitative study. Data was collected by interviewing the Director of the Office of Satun Educational Service Area, the head teachers, teachers, parents and students in the island schools. Data from interviews, observations and documents was analysed using a template analysis approach (King, 2004). The findings of this study were interpreted in three dimensions: ICT benefits, ICT barriers and ICT sustainability. Sustainability is key to the effectiveness of a remote ICT project. Therefore, it is important to understand the concepts and categories associated with ICT project sustainability in rural areas. The categories of sustainability, including infrastructure, policies, politics, culture, management, human resources, co-operation and finance factors, need to be considered in the implementation of ICT projects in island schools or other projects in remote areas. The outcome of this study is a framework that clarifies the process of effective ICT implementation in the island context, which provides an additional valuable source of knowledge for local education policy makers in Thailand and other developing countries.

Traditional investing is mainly concerned with creating a financial return on investment for the investor and hence disregards other non-financial issues such as adverse environmental and societal impacts. This negligence of negative impacts in the investment process is beginning to be addressed with the emergence of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) investing, socially responsible investing (SRI), and other sustainable investing types. Therefore, this thesis aims to establish if and how large Nordic institutional asset owners integrate sustainability and ESG concerns into their respective investment processes. Moreover, a secondary goal is to determine what type of investing the current investment processes of the seasset owners resembles most. The thesis utilizes a qualitative methodology in order to gather the necessary data-points. All the information in this thesis comes from publicly available sources such as annual reports and sustainability reports. The study found that the asset owners analyzed utilize ESG integration in their investment processes. The asset owners have specific guidelines that pertain to ESG issues, and screen for non-compliance to ensure that investments with potentially detrimental effects on society are excluded from their respective portfolios. Aminority of the asset owners also utilizes best-in-class screening to identify investments with the strongest ESG performance. Hence, the asset owners, in general, are located between SRI and ESG investing on the motivation spectrum.

The investigation is mainly focused on education part of finance. Majority of participants are actively involved in determining the course contents that they teach which influence the teaching environment for students and how they are prepared for their future career. As a whole, this thesis sheds a light on how faculty-members are involved in integrating sustainability in their teaching to be able to influence finance students. In order to justify the need for sustainability emphasis in the academic finance and the finance industry, relevant examples and explanations have been provided to support the idea. One of main highlights of this thesis is that personal values and ethics are the determinants of the understanding of the concept of sustainability. Hence, it has been observed that there is a lack of sustainability understanding and integration in the finance education system as well as a lack of emphasis on personal ethics in universities that are subject to this research.

This paper is a research on recent studies on the importance of global supply chains from the perspective of farmers and suppliers. For the specific case of coffee in Peru, a survey model was used for assessing integration levels at the cooperatives in Quillabamba, Cusco, which revealed that the lack of alliances between first-level suppliers and farmers/cooperatives significantly affects sustainability in supply chain management. Therefore, this study proposes a strategic sourcing model where an intermediary integrates or strengthens the relationships between smallholders and improves interrelationships within the supply chain, thereby increasing productivity, yielding higher income, and improving product quality.

Background: Sustainability has in recent years become an increasingly present topic of discussion and in 2016 the Swedish law about Sustainability Reporting was introduced to promote sustainable development of large companies. However, studies show that many companies are still talking more about sustainability than working with it and the question is therefore how sustainability can become a more integrated part of the business. In order to get employees to work in the right direction and meet set goals, management control is used, it can also be used when integrating sustainability and sustainability goals. Purpose: The study aims to investigate and create an understanding of how the goals and commitments in the sustainability report, through management control, can be integrated into the business and thus contribute to improved sustainability. Completion: The study is a qualitative multi-case study with an iterative approach. The empirical material has been collected through semi-structured interviews with six respondents from six different case companies, which were selected through a goal- oriented convenience sample. Conclusion: The study concludes that companies has various focus on the three areas of sustainability, depending on their context. In addition, informal control instruments have a more prominent role in the integration of sustainability and sustainability goals than formal control instruments. Finally, sustainability and sustainability goals are communicated to employees through a number of different forums, indirect channels such as intranets as well as direct channels as mandatory discussions.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: A survey to assess the sustainability and marketing opportunities for smallholder cattle production systems was conducted by consulting with a total of 95 smallholder cattle producers in Ncorha and Gxwalibomvu communities in the Eastern Cape Province (ECP) of South Africa. In addition, a total of 18 surrounding beef retailers, 5 abattoirs that supplied beef to these retailers and 155 beef consumers who bought beef from these retailers between February 2013 and February 2014 were also interviewed using pretested structured questionnaires. The surveys established the perception of beef traders and consumers on the development of a Natural beef (NB) brand and indicated the willingness of participants to support the development of a NB brand. The results indicated that a smallholder beef cattle production system was socially and environmentally conditionally sustainable but economically not sustainable. Overall, the system was conditionally sustainable. Cattle herd size was bigger in Ncorha than in Gxwalibomvu (13.7±1.9 vs. 11.3 ± 1.9 heads of cattle, respectively). Smallholder producers from both sites sold an average of two cattle per year. Young farmers (<40 years old), Christians and small households (<5 members) had a greater potential to sell cattle than adults (>40 years old), traditionalists and larger households (>5 members). The thesis explores middle managers sensemaking processes of a University’s social responsibility and sustainability (SRS) strategy during a period of change. Overall the thesis establishes links between middle managers simultaneous sensemaking processes, dynamics of loosely coupled organizational contexts and organizational responses to unexpected outcomes as they impact strategy creation processes in organisations. Three main issues evolve. Firstly, middle managers in loosely coupled organisations consist of two different sets (administrators and academics). Based on their nature of work in particular, administrators and academics select different sets of dominant and subtle sensemaking frames to make sense of organizational strategies. Generally, while administrators select sensemaking frames which emanate from existing strategic processes, academics select autonomous cues which exist outside strategic processes. Administrators and academics sensemaking processes are therefore not a single level or consecutive processes as typically researched, but rather occur as simultaneous sensemaking processes. Six dominant simultaneous sensemaking frames are identified and described. Secondly, the thesis examines less explored aspects of debates on loosely coupled systems. It investigates specific patterns of coupledness in middle managers strategic work and relationships. It identified and described patterns of administrative work which are tightly coupled and patterns in academic work which are loosely coupled. Thirdly, distinct links are identified between middle managers simultaneous sensemaking processes and unexpected strategy outcomes. This further led to exploring how organizations respond to unexpected sustainability initiatives, especially in light of integrating them into already existing strategy outcomes. Three integration strategies are identified and described.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In 2004, the then Department of Housing’s Breaking New Ground (BNG) policy introduced a compilation of principles that underlie a sustainable human settlement. The principles were aimed at guiding, amongst others, municipal officials in the decisions they take when faced with a housing development project. This thesis will set out to determine how municipal officials have taken up BNG’s principles for sustainable housing settlements as well as the perceptions, methods of implementation and degree of acceptance that housing and town planning managers have of BNG. In the study, the perceived relevance that these managers have of BNG within their non-metropolitan towns is explored using five of the fifteen leader towns of the Western Cape Province. This research has shown that BNG considers the compact urban form, coupled to other development considerations, as the most sustainable for South Africa. In terms of building sustainable human settlements: the low-income housing unit has evolved substantially since its conception, and that the current unit is held in far higher regard (by both municipalities and beneficiaries) than its predecessors. The design of this unit remains standardised due to a lack of funding for a more flexible design, but its structure allows for additions to be made at the cost of the beneficiary. Funding thus remains a major constraint to housing delivery. Municipalities feel that they are able to implement BNG, but that there are certain shortcomings in the document which prevent its full implementation. One of these shortcomings is the lack of an external funding mechanism for housing delivery, proposed in BNG, but never having materialised. Further, BNG focuses more on the metropolitan scenario and is not always relevant to non-metropolitan towns. Almost all of the municipalities have initiated inner city regeneration projects, but fewer have included the provision of social housing as part of their inner city rejuvenation. Subsidy housing is the most implemented housing typology, but these units often experience decay due to the absence of original owners who have (mostly illegally) sold or rented out their units. The one-erf-one-unit nature of subsidy housing is not seen as sustainable owing to space limitation experienced by most of the municipalities interviewed. Contrary to earlier research, in situ upgrading is a common occurrence in municipalities. However, there is a great need for stronger regional (or broader scale) planning regarding housing delivery. Low-income housing is strongly influenced by politics – a fact which municipalities say negatively influences housing delivery. Migration also poses a serious threat to municipal backlogs. Currently, the fight against an escalating demand for low-cost housing is a losing battle as the rate at which government is rolling out housing is vastly ineffectual. Municipalities deem that large-scale projects like the N2 Gateway might be a solution to their housing backlogs which, they concur, are at crisis point. However, municipalities indicated that their implementation of large scale projects will not follow the same path as the N2 Gateway – the planning of which is seen to be substandard. Currently, urban integration takes place on an income basis and not due to racial division. Inclusionary housing is seen as a relevant tool for the promotion of integration, but cannot be enforced to its full potential due to a lack of supporting legislation.

Background: Existing literature suggests research about sustainability and Small- and Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs) to be limited. SMEs tend to have less resources than large companies and as a result of this sustainability integration may be challenging. Despite these resource restrictions, some SMEs still succeed in integrating sustainability. Some literature suggests that organisational culture could influence the integration of sustainability. Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to investigate how organisational culture attributes influence the integration of sustainability in Swedish SMEs. Method: To fulfil the purpose of this thesis, a multiple case study consisting of six SMEs in the Jönköping region is performed. Qualitative semi-structured interviews are conducted with the manager and/or head of sustainability. Furthermore, structured interviews are conducted with managers and employees, in an attempt to gain insights into the values and cultural attributes of the organisational culture of the SME.   Main Findings: The results reveal that an organisational culture which emphasises internal relationships, stability and goal-setting and planning seem to facilitate the integration of sustainability. SMEs with the attribute of valuing internal relationships are aided in the integration of sustainability through the existence of tightly knit groups that work together toward the long-term goal of integrating sustainability. The positive influence of stability stems from the fact that the attribute provides structure, economic stability, and a stable employee base. A high focus on goal-setting and planning may enable the integration of sustainability through providing clear missions and objectives which the company strives toward.  Managerial Implications: This study urges three implications for managers of SMEs; 1. It provide managers with some understanding of how their organisational culture may affect sustainability integration. 2. It provide insight into the challenges companies may face as the result of lacking certain cultural attributes. 3.  It provide indications of which attributes that could be beneficial to develop or incorporate into the organisational culture in order to aid the integration of sustainability.

Bamber, Andrew Sherliker. „Integrated mining, pre-concentration and waste disposal systems for the increased sustainability of hard rock metal mining“. Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/779.

Der volle Inhalt der Quelle
Annotation:
The integration of automated ore pre-concentration and waste disposal functions into the hard rock metal mining system, prior to treatment by conventional grinding and flotation, is proposed as a novel interpretation of Mine-Mill Integration for improving the economics and environmental impact of exploiting deep, low-grade or otherwise marginal mineral deposits. The proposed approach seeks to reject coarse, barren waste from the ore stream as early as possible in the mining cycle, and safely dispose of it as backfill underground. The concept is proposed as a Lean Manufacturing approach to hard rock mining, as an alternative to improving the economics of mining simply by increasing the mining rate. Lean Manufacturing philosophy seeks to design out overburden, smooth production, and eliminate waste from the system. It is suggested that the introduction of these systems into the hard rock mining process addresses all three of these areas of Lean thinking, and is thus an important approach to be considered for surface or underground mines wishing to simultaneously improve efficiency, economics and environmental performance, thus increasing the life, and the sustainability of the operation. The application of integrated mining, processing and waste disposal systems, where appropriate, is proposed as a strategy for the development of efficient new mining operations, or alternately the expansion of production at existing mines. Technologies specific to the success of the approach such as automated ore pre-concentration systems, composite fill preparation and delivery systems, as well as continuous mechanized mining methods are explored. The impacts and benefits of applying these integrated technologies to the mining system are defined and quantified through research, testwork, engineering design and systems analysis. Custom geo-metallurgical evaluation tools incorporating mineralogical, metallurgical, geophysical and geotechnical methods have been developed to allow the assessment of ores in terms of their potential for the adoption of the proposed approach. A computerized parametric evaluation model has also been developed to quantify the potential impacts and benefits using data from this testwork. A wide range of case studies have been investigated with positive results, and important conclusions are drawn towards the potential for application of the concept as a generalized case.

Ismail, A. B. „The performance of ports on the periphery : the impact of port supply chain integration, sustainability advantage and spatial characteristics“. Thesis, University of Liverpool, 2016. http://livrepository.liverpool.ac.uk/3002979/.

Annotation:
Due to intense competition, ports are desperately searching for new ways to increase performance and gain a sustainable edge into today’s dynamic and competitive business environment. Literature has deeply discussed the performance of large and established ports that hold hub status; however, studies on the performance of small and medium-sized ports (SMPs) are scarce. Even though there are studies pertaining to SMPs, it is more from the port development perspective. Thus, the aim of this study is to investigate the competitive performance of SMPs that are not on the main maritime shipping lanes and face challenges in attracting port users to make port of calls; nevertheless, they are proximate to large hinterland markets, and are thus called ports on the periphery. In particular, this study intends to seek, identify and explore the appropriate potential strategies (identified as spatial characteristics, port supply chain integration strategy, and sustainability advantage) that are able to bring continuous prosperity to the business performance of ports on the periphery; to synthesise the presence of the causal theoretical relationships between identified potential strategies and the performance of ports on the periphery; and to investigate to what extent the identified potential strategies are able to continuously contribute to the performance of such ports. The research philosophy on which this study relies is the positivism paradigm and a questionnaire survey was identified as the most appropriate instrument by which to gather data and information from participants. Port stakeholders such as port/terminal operators, port authorities, shipping lines and freight forwarders that are experts in the port business operations were identified as the relevant individuals or organisations to receive the questionnaire. To analyse the data, standard Multiple Regression Analysis (MRA) in SPSS version 22 was employed. In particular, Exploratory Data Analysis (EDA) or preliminary analysis was then conducted in sequence to determine the right statistical analysis technique to be employed, and standard MRA analysis was used to conduct the inferential analysis of the current study. The results show that the spatial characteristics of peripheral ports and the integration strategy of a port into the supply chain play a significant role in adding more sustainability benefits to the transportation supply chain and subsequently contribute to the performance of peripheral ports. The results can be used by peripheral ports as a guideline to promote themselves as a sustainable supply chain network in association with spatial characteristics and the strategy of port supply chain integration. This advantage can be a huge and attractive springboard for such ports to strengthen their performance since regulation on environmental issues has become an important agenda not only among government sectors (regulatory pressures) and non-government organisations (NGOs-communities pressures) but also among suppliers and customers (market pressures-port users) in contending with greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, in particular carbon emissions by logistic activities and operations.

Since the 1990s, the evolution to more environmentally sustainable business operations has gained increased recognition incorporations and the Academia, with sustainability becoming a key competitive priority for companies. In spite of a large amount of research on ecodesign,or the integration of environmental aspects into product design and development, recent surveys state that thorough ecodesign implementation is still a challenge for most firms. To overcome gaps found in prior studies (such as a distance between theory and practice, and over-technical and fragmented recommendations), this research aimed to identify and experiment how to incorporate environmental sustainability more effectively into product innovation and related activities of a company, and to propose a framework summarising the associated learning. This thesis is based on a set of five articles, applying a multi-methods approach. The framework was built with a methodology combining systematic reviews of previous literature and action research through a five-year long experiment. Inside a leading Brazilian cosmetics company, two implementation cycles were conducted, including customisation of ecodesign tools and their application in eight product development projects, and wide capacity building involving different stakeholders. The research led to three contributions. As a first methodological contribution, action research methodology and application guidelines were developed, for an effective collaboration mode between the Academia and companies, especially adapted to sustainable open innovation. Secondly, this study has deepened and experimented in real company context a broad view of ecodesign related activities, expanding the recognised approach centred on individual projects and validating the concept of formal insertion of customised ecodesign tools into of the Product Development Process. Such principle was further extended to include other managerial aspects, such as project and portfolio management, and linking them with strategic planning. To complement such technical and process related aspects, new \"soft\" side approaches were also experienced, building on the Transition Management theory. The third and major contribution, deriving from a synthesis of more than fifty models found in the literature and the action research, is the proposition of an \"Ecodesign Transition Framework\". The so-called \"15Ps ETF\"comprehends a \"pattern\" with eight main constructs (Purpose, Portfolio, Process, Platform, Pipeline, Practices & tools, Procedures and Project management) for a mature ecodesign and a \"pathway\" component, with five constructs (Planet, Public, Programme, Pilot, and People), for conducting the necessary transition addressing soft issues. The central \"Aztec pyramid\" shape of the framework represents the systemic three-level structure, combining the strategic, tactical and operational product related processes and activities. The ETF intends to support a far-reaching approach to better plan, implement and monitor the integration of environmental considerations in the whole innovation process of a company, through a systemic action learning process. The overall increased ecodesign maturity observed in the company showed congruence with the framework, with substantial challenges also observed. For further validation, the ETF could be applied in different contexts, and explored through qualitative and quantitative studies of associated limiting or success factors, to better address corporate specificities and complexity (e.g., culture, resistance to change, organisational entropy, etc.).
A pesquisa levou a três contribuições.

Background: Sustainability is realized by companies to different extends as plenty of pressures operate on projects which influence the outcome. One specific influence are the actors who make sense of the pressures based on organizational and personal experiences. By the combination of institutional logics and organizational sensemaking theory, organizational influences in form of pressures and logics (forming the macro-level) and personal views based on individual sense making (micro-level) are combined to a micro-macro connection. The integration of the both theories leads to a deeper understanding on ‘sustainability integration’. Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to understand how individuals handle sustainability in a project in a multinational company with has a focus in sustainability. It is of most interest how the influences, represented by the concept of institutional logics, are constructed by the sensemaking of the actors. Research question: How do employees make sense of a project with a sustainability purpose based on institutional logics? Method: The research design of this thesis is an exploratory case study with data collection by the hands of semi-structured interviews. Abductive reasoning was applied. An epistemological position of constructivism and interpretivism was taken. Conclusion: The findings of this study show that organizational pressures are not explicitly noted by each individual. A collective sensemaking is found in the fact that a sustainable project must be affordable for the customers to meet their needs. This finding however, can be traced back to the organizational level which is coined by a strong value culture.

With the rise of awareness of climate change, sustainable development has become a recurring topic in discussions concerning global development, the environment, and society. Packaging has long been a part of a ‘take-make-dispose’ linear model that has caused damage to our ecosystem and has led to the search for more sustainable alternatives. While literature relating to sustainable packaging processes exists, there is an absence of knowledge on which packaging processes are being applied, and how. Given that the French wine industry is prestigious and takes pride in tradition and quality, the question of transitioning to more sustainable packaging processes merits further research.  The purpose of this paper is to study the gap between the range of sustainable packaging approaches that are theoretically suggested in the literature and the approaches that are practically applied within organisations by exploring how and why packaging processes are integrated into the supply chain, in the French wine industry.  This research is qualitative and adopts the interpretivism paradigm. Primary data is collected through semi-structured interviews with players that occupy all the positions along the French wine industry’s packaging supply chain.  The findings show that sustainable packaging approaches are not being integrated into the supply chains in the French wine industry. (1) There are no realistic solutions available or track record to be followed. (2) The focus is still set on having clear economic benefits which the current sustainable packaging alternatives do not offer. (3) The long loop of circular economy is being used, which is based on recycling. (4) A need for collective awareness is needed, as well as a desire to change, for sustainable packaging processes to be integrated into the supply chain.

The importance of addressing the topic of sustainable development has been widely acknowledged, and the researchers call for future studies that would develop new perspectives on integrating sustainability in the business context. Currently, most of such studies focus on large companies, whereas it has been shown that the impact of SMEs on the economy, the society and the environment is also significant. The present work aims at exploring the integration of corporate social responsibility (CSR) and corporate sustainability (CS) in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the Nordic countries. Adopting a qualitative dominant mixed research method, the following objectives are achieved: using content analysis, we analyse the activities disclosed by SMEs and describe their type and focus. Further, the multiple case study of 13 SMEs operating in Sweden, Finland, Norway, Denmark and Iceland allows exploration of the process of CSR integration in companies in more detail. Using the abductive approach to analysis and systematically combining the existing approaches to analysing CSR integration with the empirical findings, we are able to distinguish several specifics of SMEs. Namely, the process of CSR integration in SMEs may be different due to increased role of the top management commitment and the varying degree of externally formalising CSR and CS through obtaining certifications. This allows us to design suggestions for the updated model of CSR integration, which would reflect these specifics of SMEs. The present work contributes to current research by exploring CSR and CS integration in the context of SMEs, which have been previously identified as research gaps. We develop suggestions for modifying an existing framework for analysing CSR integration that combines the focus on specific business operations and the stages that a company can undergo in implementing CSR. The developed model could be used as a practical tool for analysing the company and the potential areas that would lead to CSR integration on a more strategic level. The qualitative nature of the present work and supporting the theoretical reflections with quotes from SME managers and owners provides opportunities for naturalistic generalisations and gaining insights on what activities could be implemented in companies. We acknowledge that our work has several limitations. The qualitative nature of the study does not allow statistical generalisation; thus, further research is recommended to enhance the findings and test the developed model in different context and using different methods, as well as targeting not only managers and owners whose responsibilities are related to strategy and sustainability, but also employees from other functions. Quantitative and qualitative studies of SMEs in the analysed region conducted by native speakers are also recommended.

A central principle within UN and EU policy is environmental policyintegration (EPI), aiming at integrating environmental aspirations, targetsand requirements into sector policy in order to promote sustainabledevelopment. The focus of this study is EPI in bioenergy policy. Bioenergy isa renewable energy source of increasing importance in the EU and Swedishenergy mix. At the same time, it is debated how environmentally friendlybioenergy really is. Furthermore, bioenergy can be considered both a multisectorand a multi-level case, since bioenergy is produced in many differentsectors and bioenergy policy is formulated and implemented on differentlevels. Therefore, EPI in bioenergy policy is here analysed over time in twosectors (energy and agriculture) and on three levels (EU, national, subnational).A cognitive, policy learning perspective on EPI is adopted, tracingEPI through looking for reframing of policy towards incorporatingenvironmental objectives in policy rhetoric and practice. Furthermore, institutional and political explanations for the development are discussed.Paper I analyses EPI in Swedish bioenergy policy within energy andagriculture. Paper II analyses institutional conditions for multi-sector EPI inSwedish bioenergy policy. Paper III analyses EPI in EU bioenergy policywithin energy and agriculture. Paper IV analyses sub-national EPI in thecase of the Biofuel Region in north Sweden. The material examined consistsof policy documents complemented by semi-structured interviews. Together, the four papers provide a more complex and holistic picture ofthe EPI process than in previous research, which mainly has focused onstudying EPI in single sectors and on single levels. The study shows thatpriorities are different on different levels; that EPI has varied over time; butthat EPI today is detectable within bioenergy policy in both studied sectorsand on all levels. Policy learning in bioenergy is found to be mainly a topdownprocess. Furthermore, policy coherence between sectors and levels;long-term goals; and concrete policy instruments are found to be importantboth for the EPI process as such and for the outcomes from this process. However, when attempting to marry different goals, such as growth, securityand sustainability, in line with the three-tiered (economic, social, ecologic)sustainable development concept, environmental aspects risks not to beprioritised when goal conflicts arise. The study proposes that future researchboth continues the analysis of multi-sector and multi-level EPI, and furtherexplores to what extent ecological sustainability is improved by EPI.
