In the article, a review of Russian and foreign literature was carried out, which allowed to consider the main standards of risk management and quantitative methods of risk assessment. The correlation-regression analysis of risks revealed the most significant risks affecting the efficiency of corporate innovation implementation in industrial companies. These include: misunderstanding the importance of innovation for the company; lack of financial resources for innovation; low level of support for the company’s top management for the introduction of innovative processes. A regression model of the impact of risks on the effectiveness of corporate innovation was built, which will predict the degree of impact of risks on the effectiveness of corporate innovation. Recommendations on improving the risk management system for various levels of innovative development of industrial companies are proposed, which are aimed at increasing the efficiency of introducing corporate innovations in industrial companies and ensuring a high level of competitiveness of companies.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to review the roles of human resource management (HRM) specialists in the contemplation and implementation of innovation in employing organisations and workplaces. Design/methodology/approach The authors review some of the literature and practice in this field as well as 11 other articles that are included in this special issue. Findings The authors propose six research questions. First, are HRM specialists analysing relevant trends and their implications for the future of work and the workforce? Second, are HRM specialists enabling employing organisations to identify and enable innovative ideas? Third, to what extent are HRM specialists leading partnership arrangements with organised labour? Fourth, what is the role of HRM specialists in creating inclusive work environments? Fifth, how should HRM specialists change to foster enterprise performance, intrapreneurship, agility, creativity and innovation? Sixth, to what extent is there an HRM function for line managers in coordination with HRM specialists in engendering innovation around “change agent” roles? Originality/value The authors argue that HRM specialists should embrace and enable innovation. The authors challenge HRM specialists to consider how they can contribute to facilitating innovation. The paper proposes further research on HRM and range of associated stakeholders who, together, have responsibility for innovating in the design and delivery of HRM to enrich our knowledge of HRM and workplace innovations.

Motivated by the high ubiquity of the term "business models" and its increasing proliferation in terms of the transition from a measure to commercialise innovations to the subject of innovations, this paper provides a systematic review of extant academic literature on business model innovation. The particular characteristics of business model innovation are discussed and three distinct research streams addressing prerequisites, process and elements, and effects of business model innovation are identified. A tentative theoretical framework emphasising the need to distinguish between developing and innovating business models as well as to apply an entrepreneurial perspective for further research on business model innovation is proposed. An integrated research agenda emphasising the need to further enhance our understanding of the process and elements of business model innovation as well as its enablers and effects in anticipation and response to increasing environmental volatility is suggested.

The article is devoted to relevant problems of the reaserch on forensic innovations concept, its significant features, attributes, theoretical problems of development and their implementation into law enforcement activity. The analysis of scientific approaches to forensic innovations understanding is carried out, its definition is offered, significant features and attributes are singled out, its relation to the concept of innovative forensic product is analyzed. The main features of forensic innovations are considered: innovativeness (novelty), objectivism, subjectivism, purposefulness, demand, practical applicability, efficiency. It is substantiated that innovation should be understood as developed, implemented and applied in practice the latest technical-, tactical-, methodicalforensic means that are the result of research or development activities, embodied in the form of a new product (production), technology, service, solutions, used by special qualified entities in practice and aimed at effectively solving forensic tasks and ensuring optimization, improving the quality and effectiveness of law enforcement practice. It’s noted that in modern realities an important course for improving the conceptual apparatus of forensic innovation is the clarification and unification of terms. The main categories of the studied theory are the concepts of “innovative forensic product” and “forensic innovation”. The analysis of the essence of these concepts gives grounds to assert that the innovative forensic product and forensic innovation are separate types of means of forensic innovation. The methodological basis for the development and implementation of forensic innovations into law enforcement are activity-based, system-structural and technological approaches, the use of which is promising for the formation of a separate forensic theory − forensic innovation. It’s substantiated that the complex approach in the development and formation of forensic innovation basic concepts is a methodological foundation for further research on this issue. It’s noted that in current realities criminalistics and each of its sections face important problems intending to study and take into consideration modern innovative achievements of science and technology, which can be effectively used while combating crime and successfully ensure urgent needs with forensic innovations in practice. New scientific approaches and proposals for solving the researched discussion problems are justified, perspective directions of research in this field of knowledge are defined.

We present a preliminary theory of innovation in social work science. The focus of the piece is two case studies from our work that illustrate the social nature of innovations in the science of social work. This inductive theory focuses on a concept we refer to as transformative innovation, wherein two sets of individuals who possess different expertise and different network connections come together to solve a problem and in so doing transfer ideas from one network and field of expertise to the other. This transfer of ideas inevitably involves the transformation of ideas, such that the final innovation is something new to both groups of people, and as such innovative.

Innovation is a multi-varied phenomenon that involves all spheres of technological, economic, and social activity, from research and development to investment, production, and application. In innovation management, the relationship between innovation and efficiency is the key issue. In this report, therefore, we elaborate on a method for measuring efficiency in the innovation process. The core of our concept of efficiency is the link between the efficiency of the production unit that has adopted an innovation (dynamic efficiency) and the efficiency of the entire production field within which production units must act (average efficiency). The development of relative efficiency is connected to differences between basic, improvement-related, and pseudo innovations and to the decision-making environment for managers. Factors influencing innovative activities follow a continuum of efficacy ranging from inhibiting to strongly promoting innovative activities. Looking at the innovation process from the standpoint of the innovating system, we distinguish major determinants of performance and then compare the performance of industrial organizations through a profile showing these determinants in research and development, production, and marketing and in management at all stages.

Purpose Companies and organizations use various innovation governance structures, processes and metrics to make decisions about allocation of resources to the development of an innovative idea. Although many metrics measuring the process of innovation and the performance of the enterprise have been developed, a fundamentally solid and complete metric speaking to the quality and viability of the innovative idea itself is lacking. The business, applied innovation, creativity, unmet user needs and problem-solving (BACUP) model of innovation quality is proposed as such a metric based on viewing innovation from the five different viewpoints mentioned in its definition. BACUP is shown to facilitate discussion and analysis in innovation theory and is proposed as a tool allowing any innovation governance structure to achieve innovation assurance by mitigating risk and uncertainty and maximizing an innovation’s chance for success. Design/methodology/approach The BACUP framework was inspired by researching definitions of innovation and coming upon a survey in which different definitions were obtained from several different roles in companies and organizations. To use BACUP as a metric, the author and research assistants made qualitative judgments about innovations. Several judgments were obtained independently and consensus was plotted on the BACUP graphs. Findings BACUP can be used to illustrate and discuss major concepts in innovation theory. BACUP can be used to compare the relative viability of different innovative ideas. BACUP can be used to detect vulnerabilities in innovative ideas and provide information to innovation management and governance so that corrective measures can be taken. BACUP can be extended by other researchers and practitioners. Research limitations/implications In its current form, BACUP is not a quantitative tool; however, the authors envision other researchers applying existing quantitative tools and incorporating them into the BACUP framework. Practical implications BACUP is an innovative idea quality metric employable in any existing innovation management/governance structure or methodology. BACUP also gives practitioners a way to engineer innovative ideas into successful innovations. Social implications BACUP can lead to predictable and repeatable improved innovation outcomes, resulting in superior solutions to problems in all domains. Originality/value The BACUP framework is a novel, multi-dimensional view of innovation. Application of BACUP as a metric yields a new type of capability for innovation governance called innovation assurance.

Innovation networks can be understood as an organization in which two or more independent firms aim at joint research, development or spreading of innovations. In such a relatively stable and cooperative collaboration, the partner firms find support during one or more activities of the innovation process, which may increase their innovation performance (Dilk, Gleich, Wald 2008, p. 693). Relationships of innovative companies with partners in networks are based on development and transfer knowledge, which is used in innovation processes. With development of innovations in the network, knowledge and other resources are multiplied. The objective of this work is to explore cooperative relationships of companies with partners during innovation process execution within the network’s framework. This paper analyzes the impact of these relationships on the development of innovative companies, as well as also attempts to describe synergy effects of cooperation between partners in innovation networks. Questionnaire research on this subject was conducted in Lubelskie region in 2009. Summary results of these research are described in this work.

The article is devoted to topical problems of formation of forensic innovation as a new scientific direction in criminalistics. Theoretical and methodological bases for development and formation of forensic innovation, its functions, tasks and prospects of introduction of its provisions in law enforcement practice are investigated, perspective directions for research of the considered scientific concept are outlined. It’s substantiated that in present-day realities attention should be drawn to research on forensic innovation on the basis of general theoretical approaches which ensure explanation and substantiation of such fundamental principles of any separate scientific theory as its genesis, essence, fact, hypothesis and theoretical construction. It’s noted that the level of formation and validity of any scientific theory, including forensic innovation, is determined by the degree and level of development of its theoretical and methodological foundations. I t’s stressed that the process of constructing forensic innovation as a weighty forensic theory cannot yet be completed due to the large number of uncoordinated, undeveloped and debatable issues. Therefore, today the concept of forensic innovation has not yet reached the level of a separate forensic theory and is still in the process of forming. Accordingly, it is important to study and reveal patterns of functioning at the theoretical level, all stages of the life cycle of innovations in criminalistics, starting with creation, proposal, implementation, and ending with their application in practice. It’s noted that issues of determining the place of this theory in criminalistics taxonomy, its structure and functions are significant. It’s argued that currently scientific preconditions for the development and formation of forensic innovation are created and such research in modern conditions is a promising innovative direction in the development of criminalistics, which requires further research. The methodological basis for the development and implementation of forensic innovations in law enforcement are activity, system-structural and technological approaches, the use of which is promising for the formation of a separate forensic theory: forensic innovation. An integrated approach to the development and formation of forensic innovation is the methodological foundation for further research on this issue. New scientific approaches to the solution of researched debatable questions are substantiated and promising directions for research on the specified problems are defined.

A hotel’s likelihood of innovating depends largely on structural independence (non-chain), having an explicit innovation strategy and investing in non-traditional R&D.Research limitations/implicationsBecause of the chosen design (convenience sampling), the results of this paper may lack generalizability. Therefore, future research is encouraged to test the hypotheses further.Practical implicationsManagers in the hospitality industry can influence the production of innovations in the hotel sector. By promoting flexibility, defining and communicating an innovation strategy, and engaging in non-traditional R&D activities, practitioners can better respond to the changing business environment.Originality/valueThis paper presents a systematic, and internationally recognized, method for assessing four types of innovation in the hotel sector. Its originality stems also from its approach to investigating how key structural and organizational factors, when considered in the same analysis, predict service/product, process, organizational and marketing innovations.

The purpose of the article is to structure innovation in order to determine the priorities of financial regulation and its strategic orientations. Methods. To obtain the results in the study a number of general scientific and special methods were used: structural analysis, statistical methods, system analysis, scientific abstraction method. Results. The interpretation of the financial regulation of innovation activity as an agreed comprehensive legislative regulation of the use of budget and tax instruments is grounded in order to influence state institutions on the national innovation system functioning, innovation potential and innovative security in the country, aimed at strengthening competitiveness and establishing an innovative model of socio-economic development. The analysis of structural features of innovative activity of domestic business entities is carried out. The role of technological innovations (process and product) in the Ukrainian economy is revealed. The specifics of the introduction of non-technological innovations in the context of marketing and organizational are detected. The tendentious low role of product innovations in the overall structure of innovation activity of Ukrainian enterprises is identified, which poses a threat to the country's innovative security. It is argued that the priority of financial regulation should be the integration within the triangle of science-innovation-production. The emphasis is on the role of elements of innovation infrastructure (scientific parks, technological parks, innovation clusters) in increasing the efficiency of financial regulation of innovation activity. Conclusions. The prospects of further scientific research on the subject of research are primarily based on substantiating concrete decisions to increase the role of educational and scientific components in stimulating research and development as a pledge of innovative successes of enterprises in Ukraine.

However, there are factors such as education, age and gender that can influence innovation creation. The main purpose of the research is finding out how innovation creation is related to the gender, age and education of entrepreneurs in common entrepreneurship and social entrepreneurship. The systematic literature review has shown that innovative activity is supported by entrepreneurial competencies. The relevance of the decision of this scientific problem is that they are few studies focusing on that problem. Investigation of the topic of innovative activity in the paper is carried out in the following logical sequence: (1) literature review concerning on innovative activity, typology and modern trends in innovations (2) possibilities of competencies needed for innovations, (3) case study background, based on literature review and previous studies (4) presentation of key results concerning gender, which was found to have no significance regarding entrepreneurship. Methodological tools of the research methods were sociological survey, data analysis. As a result of the calculations, the main issues of innovative activities were detected. The main results were analysed using Cluster analysis and tests of statistical significance. The paper presents the results of an empirical analysis that shows the main gaps in the innovation classification when pure and combined innovation types are presented. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze the academic research about innovation in universities, considering Brazilians journals in the period of 2001-2010. The research was exploratory and bibliographic, using thirty five journals classified by the Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES) in the levels A1, A2, B1, B2 e B3. Between those, sixteen presented the total of thirty five articles about the main subject. The results revealed that the biggest part of articles is published in only five journals, mostly into evaluation level B3. Most of those were writing by two authors, usually from different institutions, and there is a growing tendency in the number of publications, especially in the evaluation level B3. The most frequent subject was de University-Industry relationships, with lower participation from the subjects: patenting, incubators, Center for Technological Innovation (CTI), academic spin-offs, technology transfer, and innovation adoption. The study concludes that almost all of the publications deals with the perspective of innovations produced by university for external environment, and the innovations for the internal environment have poorest publication, which leads on to the need of development of an innovation culture in universities, in order to improve its innovative and entrepreneurial abilities.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to suggest an innovation-based perspective on company performance and develops a conceptual framework. Design/methodology/approach – This is a research paper, which builds on prior theoretical and empirical management research. Findings – The innovation-based view is grounded in interfirm differences in innovation, and it underscores the opportunities to achieve sustainable superior firm performance by innovating internally besides the increasing trend toward open innovation. The innovation-based perspective goes beyond many firms’ focus on product innovation by examining its interdependencies with other essential first-order innovations such as service, process, business model, and management innovations. The innovation-based perspective further addresses the dynamic and intertemporal transformation of innovation activities based on second-order innovations, which provide a more realistic view of organizations’ innovation over time. This transformation affects organizational boundaries and how a firm sustains superior performance. Originality/value – The innovation-based view revises extant approaches to competition and firm boundaries. The new arguments help to reconcile inconsistent earlier findings, and they deepen the understanding of interfirm differences in innovation and performance.

Topicality. The current stage of society development has a clear innovation orientation. The European scientific community is well aware that the complex problems of innovation cannot be solved in a single country. We need to combine efforts in science, education and business. This is how the European Research Area (ERA) exists and develops. The ERA initiative is actively developing and its development is projected until 2030 under various dynamic scenarios. Ukraine faces the task of finding its "ecological niche" in this quasi-global "innovation ecosystem", building its national innovation ecosystem. Aim and tasks. The purpose of this work is to form a methodological and theoretical and methodological apparatus for the development of innovation ecosystems in the transformation of quasi-global innovation policy. Research results. EU Member States, other countries involved and stakeholders have made significant progress based on an analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of European research systems and the common goal of achieving lasting change in the results and effectiveness of European research. The priorities of the European Research Area are: more effective national research systems, including increased competition within national borders and sustainable or greater investment in research; optimal transnational cooperation and competition; identification and implementation of joint research programs on the biggest challenges, quality improvement through pan-European open competition, as well as the creation and effective management of key research infrastructures on a pan-European basis; creation of an open labor market for researchers - removal of obstacles to the mobility of researchers, their training and career development; gender equality and gender mainstreaming in research; optimal dissemination, access to scientific knowledge and their transfer, including through the digital ERA. The scheme of the National Innovation Ecosystem presented by us has a number of new conceptual approaches that use "ecological" elements of the scientific apparatus. In particular, ecosystem functions are more harmoniously represented: by fertilization, synthesis and adsorption of innovations and diffusion of innovations. The proposed classification of innovative players is also proposed: issuers, producers and consumers - corresponds to the concept of innovative ecosystem and harmoniously combines actors of nature management. Conclusion. As in Ukraine today, stakeholders have not had the opportunity to “apply innovation in practice” and gain experience. Therefore, it may be appropriate to link the Ukrainian innovation ecosystem at a very early stage with EU countries. The priority is not only to join Ukrainian universities and research institutions to their international counterparts, but also to train Ukrainian innovation companies on how to operate in international innovation markets. In the international context, Ukrainian firms will be required to develop and improve high-quality innovative products. The formation of new research structures, mobilization of research and innovation activities required by the Green European Deal requires the activation of the national innovation ecosystem, the core of which should be a pool of scientists and research infrastructure of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

Abstract Small and medium sized companies (SMEs) assure economic growth in Europe. The Environmental Technologies Action Plan (ETAP) concentrated and mobilized Member State and stakeholder efforts bringing eco-innovation from research to market, improving market conditions, opening up global markets. Rapid and reinforced actions are now required, building on the experience of ETAP helping SMEs to have benefits by introducing eco-innovative approaches into their operations. Particularly start-ups, can be the ideal incubators for eco-innovation, and can bring to market new, less environmentally damaging products, services and processes. Generally many SMEs are struggling to survive in an ongoing global recession and often they are becoming reluctant to release innovation, particularly eco-innovation (Assante et al., 2016). In this paper we present first the differences between eco-innovation based business models and those based on regular innovations. Secondly we give some approaches tested in national and European projects with participation of the authors in order to help SMEs to develop business models of eco-innovations. The first one is to build cooperation between researchers, educators and SME staff in order to explain SMEs the advantages of such models and to implement models designed by researchers. Secondly we used practice oriented forms of training for SMEs like Problem Based Learning (PBL) as an efficient form for SMEs and entrepreneurship education to learn to solve problems like the building of an eco-innovation business model. Thirdly we use in our projects eco-innovation biographies (EIBs) reflecting the evolutionary character of such innovations and the dynamics of related policy streams.

Innovation risk in banks, a formalized instrument that is part of banks’ financial and innovative strategies, influences the assessment of innovative activity, demonstrating the importance of forecasting and assessment models of potential innovation risks. Our research into general scientific and specific methods allowed us to: (1) distinguish hierarchical concepts and their order—namely, “banking innovation”, “economic effects of innovational activities”, “financial and innovative strategy”, and “innovation risk”; (2) identify links between innovative and strategic bank management, since bank innovations are carried out in conjunction with strategies and imply positive strategic economic effects, making the assessment of potential innovation risk necessary for the current moment and the future; (3) note that the launching and use of new technologies on economic cycles and phases involving a necessary correlation between innovative profit and these phases; (4) provide preferable measurements of banks’ innovative activity and financial performance against commission income; (5) assess the potential financial performance of banks’ financial and innovative strategies within economic cycles and phases and in accordance with the nature of income; (6) present general areas for the practical application of an adapted data mining–Monte Carlo method, based on a proprietary software product. The model’s application in the “open innovation” system exhibits its multipurpose nature and allows for the selection of alternative strategic innovative solutions within economic cycle phases. It also serves in the promotion of Big Data technology in relation to finance and innovation, which is a promising area, and determines the values of the desired indicators for the “bank of the future” concept.

The main aim of the research was to develop cognitive instruments that allow justification of decisions in national innovation policy. In the theoretical part of research fundamentals of national innovation policies of EU-members and Ukraine were compared to reveal factors that can accelerate innovation development. In the empirical part of research the analysis of innovation capability of Ukrainian enterprises was conducted based on financial, statistic and management reports and it confirmed that companies systematically conducted innovation activities, reached higher levels of innovation potential, innovative business opportunities and margin of economic security and, consequently, have more innovative capacities for innovation of all types. The formation of cognitive analytical base allowed the application of scenario modelling at the level of public management of innovation activity. Cognitive modelling approach was justified firstly by increased volatility in economic conditions of modern realities of crisis in the national economy, and secondly high-cost and risky innovations, fast diffusion of information resources during the introduction of innovation processes, and thirdly, the presence of the mutual influence of objects of national innovation system.

Theoretical aspects of innovation theory and its categorical apparatus are considered in the article. Development of ideas about the place and importance of innovation in the spread of innovative theories and approaches to the categories of "innovation" and "innovative development" are analyzed. Own reasoning is presented and own definition of investigated terms that based on the analysis is given. Knowing of theoretical essentials of innovations will enable to create an effective system of management of innovation processes at the enterprise. From this point of view it is expedient to consider the definitions of innovations and their classification. In given article, an author reveals the notions of innovation and innovation process that exist in economic literature by now, considers existing classifications of innovations. An author also gives his own classification of innovations, reveals his understanding of notion of innovation. Currently, the term "innovation" is found everywhere. It has become especially widespread in the sphere of production, although it is not limited to it and applies to almost all areas of human activity. The world and domestic economy form a new paradigm of development, which is based on the growing relationship between socio-economic development of society and new technologies, the global nature of the creation and use of research and development. The creation and implementation of innovations becomes the main internal factor and the key to uture economic growth. As world experience shows, the successful use of scientific and technological progress can significantly affect the course of economic processes and significantly accelerate them. The term "innovative development" consists of two categories – "innovation" and "development". As they are widely used in almost all fields of knowledge and areas of activity, they do not have an unambiguous definition and are the subject of research by domestic and foreign scientists of various profiles.

This paper presents a tool that can help innovators to operationalize responsible research & innovation (RRI) in industry and offers decision support in their innovation project management. This tool is based on an earlier method of project quality assessment to identify innovative project success-related key performance indicators (KPIs). Based on real-world data and using structural equation modelling, a model is developed that relates the KPIs to one another and provides innovators with the opportunity to compare quality scores of current projects to a database of earlier successful and less successful project quality assessments. Building on this model, using a rapid prototyping approach based simulation and modelling, a scenario development tool has been developed that can predict success chances of current projects based on changing KPI score parameters. By highlighting the value of the KPIs in relation to RRI, and by elucidating what could be done to increase values of low scoring project KPIs, innovators who use the tool can evaluate possible actions they can deploy to increase the quality of their innovative projects, while simultaneously innovating in a more socially responsible way.

In the article, based on the analysis of the source and scientific base of the problem of innovation and innovative activity, the key concepts of further research are described, the discussion issues are characterized and our view on the studied construct is outlined. We understand the pedagogical message as a pedagogical professional orientation and the content of innovative activity of future specialists in various fields of education. Definitions of concepts and phenomena “innovation”, “innovation in education”, “innovational activity”, “pedagogical provision in innovation education” are considered. The origin in the scientific circulation of the concept of “innovation” has been clarified. We understand pedagogical innovations as a creative educational process of innovations aimed at updating the content, forms, means and methods of teaching and education, application of new (both in content and form) technologies, organizational dialogue, interactive forms of teacher interaction with students who change globally the nature of the acquisition of professional skills by future specialists and certify the effectiveness of the end result. We consider the innovative activity of students as the orientation of the student’s personality to active scientific and pedagogical activity to obtain new educational, scientific or professional information, immersing themselves in a new information space. The origins of research on the problem of “innovation” and “innovative activities” date back to the second half of the ХІХ century in foreign pedagogical science with the emergence of a new pedagogical field – experimental pedagogy (A. Binet, O. Decroly, A. Lai, E. Clapered, V. Kilpatrick, E. Mayman, E. Thorndike and others), the core of which was creative development of the personality. The historical scientific digression on the studied construct testified to the priority of the functioning of the related term “innovation”, which was formulated by E. Rogers. According to M. Lapin, “innovation” is a conscious introduction also in the main features of reproduction (replication), change of the structure and (or) process of functioning of the sociotechnical system as an element or subsystem and meet both the laws of society development and internal laws of development of object that changes. Under pedagogical innovations we will understand the creative educational process of innovations aimed at updating the content, forms, means and methods of teaching and educating future professionals, the use of new (both in content and form) technologies, organizational dialogue forms of teacher-student (professor-students) interaction, which globally change both the content and forms of its acquisition and educational outcomes. We understand innovative activity in the educational process of higher education institutions as an integrated interaction of teachers-innovators of professional disciplines, activities of students-performers and students-initiators, ready not only to introduce innovations in the process of their professional training, but also to initiate innovations.

The purpose of the paper. This paper outlines a comprehensive study of the essence and the essential synthesis elements of a Research University’s innovation capacity. The following tasks were set as the article’s objectives: 1) to analyse the development of scientific thought in the field of innovation potential; 2) to provide the author’s definition of the innovative potential of such a university; 3) to structure the system of evaluation of the university’s innovation potential. This study examines the new realities of needs for universities of the 21st Century to improve their development management through a focus on the concept of “open” innovations. Methodology. This research is based on a careful analysis of the innovation capacity by the evolution of scientific thought. Scientific literature has expressed varying and opposing views as to the nature of the innovation capacity. However, very little has been identified to empirically judge the university’s innovation capacity. Results. The present work suggested definitions of “Research University’s innovation capacity” through the main component based on a novel integration approach. That approach includes the unity of the three types of economic activity. Those three are the provision of educational services, the provision of high-tech business services (carrying out R&D on a commercial basis), and innovative activities through commercialization of intellectual property. That also encompasses the creation of start-ups or spin-off companies, producing high technology products. The paper provides an opportunity to focus on a systemic approach to assessing the university. Proposed systematic evaluation of the university’s innovation potential through its internal and external components: organizational and managerial component; information and methodical component; the intellectual component; the research component; production and technological component; financial component; marketing component; global networks; research laboratories of TNCs; scientific unions and organizations; international consortia. This approach to the assessment provides with a more extensive comprehension of the main fields of activities of the Research University. The interaction of these components gives an opportunity to obtain a synergistic effect that will lead to their mutual reinforcement in the strategic perspective. Practical implications. It can be used by experts to comprehensively assess the potential of a world-class university by training human resources, solving complicated scientific and technological issues in order to obtain the economic outputs. Value. This research highlights the necessity to review the approaches to assessment of the innovative potential in the Research University. The authors presented their own vision of the internal and external components of the innovative potential of the Research University.
