AbstractEschewing a Marxist interpretation of the French Revolution, Jeff Horn’s work is nonetheless interesting in stressing the widespread prevalence of machine-breaking by workers in France as compared to England during industrialisation. Likewise notable is Horn’s argument that the resultant state-intervention forced France onto a path of industrialisation which differed from England’s and which has been underestimated. Breaking with the revisionist consensus, Horn further demonstrates that the effect of the Revolution was positive for French economic development. Refreshing in its stress on working-class militancy, Horn’s work nonetheless exaggerates the influence of machine-breaking on French economic change as compared to other forms of working-class struggle, the slow pace of primitive accumulation and the resistance to industrialisation by small-scale urban producers.

The Upper Saintonge region of western France was one of the primary production centres for the supply of exotic pottery to Britain and northern Europe between the thirteenth and the eighteenth centuries. The principal manufacturing sites were rural workshops in the parishes neighbouring La Chapelle-des-Pots, on the wooded, limestone plateau north east of Saintes and some fifty kilometres down the river Charente from the maritime port of La Rochelle. The expansion of rural industries, producing for extra-regional markets, was a Europe-wide phenomenon between the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries. The theory of proto-industrialisation has been used to explain this process. It has been argued that regionally-dense, rural industries grew up as urban merchants sought cheap production methods to profit from growing overseas demand for manufactured goods, especially textiles and metals. By the later eighteenth or nineteenth centuries, the participation of large numbers of country people in industrial work altered traditional regional demographic and agrarian regimes, resulting in population growth, land-holding fragmentation and the creation of mercantile profit. This provided labour, finance and motive for a ‘second phase’ in the transition from feudal to capitalist economic relations in some regions of Europe and fully-developed industrialisation in others.

AbstractBetween 1815 and 1870, thousands of British artisans emigrated to the continent. Among them, hundreds of lacemakers from the East Midlands went to work in northern France, especially Calais. Thanks to the ‘bobbin-net’ technology, they had a competitive lead. By emigrating, they could sell in French markets without paying duties or smuggling costs. They maintained close connections with the East Midlands, where they bought machinery and cotton thread, hired their workforce, and obtained first-hand information on patterns and techniques. These migrant artisans played a decisive part in boosting continental industrialisation and in creating a unified zone of production in north-western Europe.

India’s vision for Atmanirbhar Bharat adopted in 2020 attempts to make the country and its citizens self-reliant in all aspects. India, being the third largest military spender after the US and China, has also worked towards achieving self-reliance in defence production while maintaining a constant push towards ‘Make in India’. The Indian embassy in Paris has reiterated France’s commitment and complete support to India’s vision of self-reliance in areas of defence industrialisation, joint research, and development in India across a broad spectrum of advanced capabilities. The first part of the article examines the historical background of evolving security relationship between India and France, analysing defence and security cooperation as a principal pillar of their Strategic Partnership. The second part of the article attempts to study the impact of France on India’s military modernisation through the transfer of resources and technology, and through co-development and co-production of equipment. It tracks France’s role in assisting India to reduce dependence on Russia for their military hardware requirements, in its path towards indigenous defence production. The concluding part of the article extrapolates the findings onto the future in order to examine the challenges faced by India in its attempt towards military modernisation. It also seeks to examine challenges in the partnership between the two actors and its impact on France’s role in India’s defence modernisation.

Responses to epidemics and climate change since ancient times, as well as their interpretations, ar e recurrent in times of crisis. Confronted with what may appear to be a series of global crises - health, environmental, economic and even democratic - the ideas on the virtues of what is local and rural are becoming increasingly important. We propose to put this return to locality ‘in historical perspective’. The first part of the paper presents the major events, in France, and explains the major changes in the agricultural world between the 18th and 19th centuries. The second part highlights the aesthetic, artistic, utopian and literary reactions to the ravages of industrialisation in France and England. The third part deals with the integration of nature in the city since the 18th century, and then the nostalgic aspirations for working the land since the 19th century. Finally, in these times of pandemic, we conclude this study on the current movements of degrowth, ecology and return to the local, in favour of food and collective gardens.

Abstract:During the first half of the nineteenth century, the French economy underwent a major technological change, with small and medium-scale entrepreneurs driving the industrialisation by developing and exploiting new technologies. This paper examines the life of one such entrepreneur, Hector Ledru (ca. 1798 to 1876), who started out in the sugar industry of the post Napoleonic era. He soon morphed into an entrepreneur exploiting patents in the manufacture of wooden barrel manufacture, galvanised iron and metal pipes, before he settled on the manufacture and installation of central heating systems. Ledru serves as an example of the archetypical small and later medium-scale entrepreneur making his way in post Napoleonic France, never reaching national fame, but all the way adjusting to the various social and economic circumstances.

Scientific literature in social sciences that deals with nitrate embraces two centuries, whereas very little socio-economic work has addressed other forms of reactive nitrogen. Nitrogen has always had an ambivalent role as both a raw material indispensable for the development of agricultural and a source of negative impacts. This ambivalence has accompanied the social history of livestock production and can explain the conflicting nature of the subject and the moderate environmental efficiency of environmental policies. The legal system is particularly complex. The main cause of territorial pollutions is linked to the industrialisation and spatial concentration of livestock production in France, as in numerous countries in Europe and North America. This conglomeration movement is translated by a concentration of animal manure, which drives to nitrogen balance surplus and associated serious environmental consequences.

Entre le Rhin et la Saône, les projets de TGV et de canal à grand gabarit tendent à renforcer l'axe Rhin Rhône. Cet espace, jusqu'ici mal défini et privé de consistance historique, peut voir émerger de nouvelles dynamiques régionales. A travers leurs multiples relations, les paradigmes industriels créent des systèmes régionaux : flux de marchandises et de main-d’œuvre, relations entre les entreprises, problèmes de recherche et développement, restructurations et reconversions, valeurs historiques et culturelles. L'étude des activités de Rhin Rhône permet de définir quatre types de régions industrielles : région non-fordiste; compagny-town néo-fordiste; région d'exécution; métropole rhénane. Les régions qui ont permis de déterminer cette typologie ont des approches diverses dans leur façon de concevoir le développement local. C'est pourquoi une grille d'analyse synthétique attribue une place à chaque région en fonction de ses acquis, de ses forces et de ses faiblesses. Selon l'échelle choisie, différents phénomènes sont observés. Schématiquement, un coté occidental, avec Dijon et Besançon, s'oppose à un coté oriental, depuis Belfort et Montbéliard jusqu'à Bâle à travers le sud-Alsace. A l'ouest, si les villes ont suscité la croissance industrielle, le secteur tertiaire reste le moteur du développement. A l'est, l'industrie continue à jouer un rôle central malgré la crise de l'emploi depuis les années 1980. L'est et l'ouest se tournent le dos, animés par des valeurs et des convictions divergentes. A une échelle plus fine, la balkanisation s'accentue avec sept systèmes régionaux. Plusieurs trajectoires sont possibles : la marginalisation en tant que Finisterre de l'espace français; la constitution d'un axe de transit pour les courants d'échanges européens; un développement fondé sur l'harmonisation des activités exogènes et des potentialités endogènes.

Depuis 1987, les jeux de casino se sont profondément transformés, tout comme leur image. Autrefois stigmatisée par la dénonciation des ravages du jeu, cette pratique est devenue un loisir, individuel ou collectif, tout à fait acceptable. La législation des machines à sous en 1987 a permis l'industrialisation des casinos. Elle a marqué un tournant décisif pour ces établissements qui sont devenus des espaces où se développe une forme spécifique de sociabilité. Cet espace est organisé à l'aide de techniques de marketing très élaborées que l'on retrouve dans les parcs de loisirs ou les clubs de vacances par exemple. Elles concourent à faire des casinos un nouvel espace communicant. Les casinos présentent des enjeux économiques importants et un apport non négligeable pour les finances publiques, ce qui pousse souvent les dirigeants politiques à les soutenir en dépit d'oppositions morales et sociales. Enfin, les casinos sont devenus un instrument du développement local en s'intégrant à l'industrie touristique : ils deviennent ainsi un moyen supplémentaire de promotion du territoire qui les accueille
Since 1987, casino games and the general image of casinos have gone through a profond change. Where previously, this type of activity was stigmatized by the potential damage it could lead to, it has now become an individual or collective leisure, socially acceptable. The slot machines legalization in 1987 brought about an industrialisation of casinos and this underlined a turning point for these firms. They became places that develop a specific form of sociability. The casino layout is now organized using appropriate marketing techniques which can also be found in the recreation parks or clubs for example. These marketing techniques are building the casino as a new place for communication. But casinos represent high economic stakes and an important source of income for the public finances. This is the main reason why governements legalize them despite the moral and social objections. Last but not least, casino has become instrumental in local development as it is now part of the tourist industry ; Where more often they are considered as a means to promote the area where they are established

Si le calcul du prix de revient est un& r)pération qui remonte à la nuit des temps, Marc Nikitin a montré, dans une thèse récente, que son calcul, selon les règ*les de la comptabilité en partie double, s'est imposé en France lors de la Première Révolution industrielle. Pour la seconde industrialisation, notre thèse est que les calculs du prix de revient se développèrent selon quatre étapes. La première période, de 1880 à 1930, prolonge celle de la nalssanc;e de la comptabilité industrielle, avec un prix de revient comptable qui prétend au monopole de la vérité, sous l'influence d'une profession comptable en voie de constitution. Le deuxième temps, de 1930 à 1950, est marqué par une réflexion sur une imputation plus serrée des frais généraux dans le prix de revient. 1 1 correspond également au souci de lui voir jouer un rôle dans 1 a régulation de l'économie via la fixation du prix de vente par une instance extérieure à la firme. Une novation qui fut portée par ce qu'on peut appeler des " technocrates " qui recherchaient, dans une idéologie " pianiste ", voire corporatiste, une réponse à la crise du li b6rai i sm e des années 30. A partir de 1950, les calculs du prix de revient entrent dans !'ère du management, après les missions de productivité qui furent dépêchées aux Etats-Unis. A partir de là, les coûts standard se àiffuseront en France, quarante ans après leur émergence outre-Atlantique. Sans occulter h ~ s dimensions économiques ou culturelles qui peuvent justifier ce décalage, notre thèse insiste sur l'influence du corporatis, né corr.ptable et sur le succès de l'idéologie corporatiste pour expliquer 1 a *quarantaine dont fut l'objet la méthode des coûts pré-établis dans notre pays. Ces agglomerations n'ont aucun pouvoir de decision, l'industrie de ces huit agglomerations fait figure de veritable satellite de paris le taux d'emploi est superieur a un dans les agglomerations de corbeil et de pontoise, il est inferieur un dans les autres agglomerations (creil etampes, mantes, meaux, melun et rambouillet). Les emplois tertiaires cadres, employes sont insuffisants les actifs residants dans ces agglomerations vont travailler a paris l'urbanisation et l'industrialisation provoquent des reductions des superficies cultivees et la disparition de nombreuses exploitations agricoles.

La these definit dans le meme temps la composante territoriale de la dynamique, le territoire etant lui-meme concu comme une organisation, forme finalisee, inscrite dans une histoire, liee a un processus d'interrelations et d'interactions entre les strategies et les rationalites plurielles des acteurs ; la dynamique territoriale est largement liee a l'action des institutions
This thesis is a survey of a local industrial development, approached frol the theory of organization. From the experience of maurienne, a valley in the french alps and birthplace for electrometallurgy and electrochemistry industry, it also gives prominence to the process of industrial divide, characterised as periods of organizational transformation, wich are the main features of the evolution in a local industrial system. The thesis then shows there is no local industrial system that needs to be condamned by the crisis, even in areas of traditional industrial development, it defines at the same time the territorial compnent of the industrial dynamics, the territoy itself being conceived of as an organization, in a finalised form, rooted in a historical process, and linked to a process of interaction beetween the strategies and the rationalities of the actors and their interrelations ; the territorial dynamics is closely linked to the behaviour of institutions

Utilite reconnue, utilisation etendue, la formation des adultes, devenue formation professionnelle continue, correspond a une "fonction" sociale. Son institutionnalisation resulte de la mise en place d'un systeme a plusieurs acteurs : les entreprises, les forces sociales et l'etat. A la frontiere de plusieurs champs, elle tend a s'autonomiser. De ce champ, a cote de l'etat et des entreprises, emerge la figure des organismes de formation. L'activite de ceux-ci est suffisamment diverse pour que l'observateur ne puisse pas s'autoriser a en donner une definition simple. La remise en cause des situatioins de monopole ou de "marches" proteges contribue a rapprocher le systeme de la formation pour adultes du modele marchand. Une dynamique d'offre de services "sur mesure" se manifeste. Les organismes, pour repondre a la diversite des demandes, modifient l'organisation du travail. The training of adults, now in-service training, serves a social purpose whose utility has been recognized and use extended. Its official recognition results from the setting-up of a systematic organisation with several intervening partners : industries, social partners, the state. Impinging on several fields at the start, it now tends to become autonomous. In this field, the training agencies stand out, beside the state and the industries. The observer cannot allow himself to give a rapid definition of their activities as they are of a great variety. The questioning of monopoly situations on of protected "markets" contributes to bring the training of adults chose to a business model. A dynamic of "tailored" offers of services has developed. In order to meet the diversity of demand, the agencies have changed the organization of work - therefore as the services offered differ from the collective models of initial training, the training of adults, taking into account its own characteristics, can be analysed as a component of the whole industry of culturel. The analysis then clearly shows that the fragmentation of the trainers's activity objectively results from a new "rapport de force". All things considered, at a practical level, the turning of training into both an industry and a business, simply appears as the instrument and the embodiment of the acceptability of a new group of people : the professionals of adult training

La France est souvent qualifiée de "pays du fromage". Cette association ne s'explique pas seulement par l'importance économiques du fromage. Elle suppose une qualité particulière de la production qui fait du fromage l'équivalent du vin dans sa contribution à la renommée gastronomique de la France. Cette réputation tient également et surtout à la grande diversité de sa production, souvent considérée comme une richesse nationale. La France fromagère apparait ainsi comme une sorte d'entité spatiale particulière caractérisée par une forte diversité interne ; une diversité qui semble résister à l'uniformation de la production et de la consommation. L'objectif de cette thèse est d'étudier de façon géographique un symbole national, le fromage, en analysant de façon détaillée les liens qu'il entretient avec l'espace en France. Le second axe de cette recherche consiste à tenter de dresser une cartographie qui permette de rendre manifeste, dans le cadre de la France fromagère, des types d'espace lieu au fromage, qui dans certains cas s'éloignent de la définition courante du terroir. Pour ce faire, l'étude de la France fromagère est organisée en deux parties. La première traite de la construction spatiale de la France fromagère, dans une perspective historique depuis l'aire préindustrielle (1800). La seconde est consacrée à des études de cas à caractère monographique, afin d'étudier de façon plus détaillée la nature des liens qui unissent le fromage à l'espace.

Cette these est une tentative pour articuler la dynamique des systemes techniques et le processus d'industrialisation de l'agriculture, a partir de l'etude des caracteristiques particulieres du systeme de production du mais. Nous essayons de repondre a des questions concernant la genese, le fonctionnement et les limites du processus d'industrialisation de la culture du mais. Deux corps de l'analyse economique, a savoir l'economie des changements technologiques et l'economie rurale, viennent ici se conjuguer afin de rendre compte de la place de la dynamique de la technique dans les transformations des systemes de production agricoles. Le processus d'industrialisation de la culture du mais est un ensemble complexe, compose de plusieurs niveaux d'apprehension. Les deux premieres parties eclairent chacune un de ces niveaux : nous procedons d'abord a une analyse technique, puis economique. Mais si au terme de ces deux parties nous avons degage un ensemble de phenomenes, leur analyse demeure insatisfaisante. Les structures, technique et economique, sont les elements d'un systeme plus vaste dont la dynamique est le produit des inter-relations qui s'y etablissent. La derniere partie se donne pour objectif de presenter des elements pour une approche systemique de l'industrialisation de la culture du mais. Les phases de croissance et de crise du systeme de production du mais peuvent etre eclairees par une analyse en termes de coherence des systemes technique et economique, et de rupture de coherence
This thesis is a tentative to articulate the dynamic of technical systems and the agricultural industrialization process, from the study of corn cultivation system. We try to answer questions about genesis, functioning and limits of the industrialization process of corn cultivation. Two analytic corpus, the technological change economy and the rural economy, are calling together to understand which is the place of technological dynamic in the change of agricultural production systems. Industrialization process of corn cultivation is a complex whole, composed of several apprehension levels. The first two parts throw light on one level : we are doing initially a technical analysis, then an economical one. Technical and economical structures are the elements of a vaster system, which dynamic is the product of relationships in this system. The aim of the last part is to introduce some elements for a systemic approach of corn cultivation industrialization. Growth and crisis of corn production system may be clarify by an analysis in terms of coherence and ruoture of coherence

This chapter investigates the field of contemporary French documentary as a source for cultural representations of farmland and farm life, a segment of the national territory that has undergone profound change in the past half-century. Farmland, which represents over half of the surface area of metropolitan France, provides employment to an ever-smaller percentage of the population. The amount of land needed to make a living continues to grow, and farms are increasingly run by corporations rather than by people who live and work on the same property. Since 2000, a significant number of French documentaries have explored to the changes wrought to the landscape and to farm life by the agricultural industrialisation of the previous half-century. By reading across a broad collection of recent documentaries on farming, this chapter reveals the contours of a broader conversation about the emergence of, and need for, new forms of reconnection between the inhabitants of rural and urban France. The contours of this conversation emerge both in the documentary forms and practices in the films as well as new forms of interaction between films and their audiences.

In spatial, social and cultural pluralism, the questions of human intentionality and socio-spatial emergence remain central to social theory (Portugali 2000, p.142). The correlation between individual preferences, values and intentions, and actual behaviour and actions, is subject to Portugali’s theory of self-organisation (2000). Compared to Gidden’s structuralism, which focuses on society and groups, the point of departure for Portugali (2000) are individuals and their personal choices. The key feature in how complex systems `self-organise', is that they `interpret', the information that comes from the environment (Portugali 2006). The current study explores the urban environment formerly inhabited, and largely constructed, by Jews in two central Polish districts: Mazovia and Lodz, before the tragedy of the Holocaust. While the Jewish presence lasted from the 11th century until the outbreak of World War II, the most intensive development took place in the 19th century, together with the civilisation changes introduced by industrialisation. Embracing the everyday habits of Jewish citizens endows the neighbourhood structures they once inhabited with long gone meanings, the information layer which once helped organise everyday life. The main thesis reveals that Jewish communities in pre-war Poland represented an example of a self-organising society, one which could be considered a prototype of contemporary postmodern cultural complexity. The mapping of this complexity at the scale of a neighbourhood is a challenge, a method for which is addressed in the current paper. The above considerations are in line with the empirical studies of the relations between Jews and Poles, especially in large cities, where more complex socio-cultural processes could have occurred.
