This paper presents a simple three-sector model that seeks to establish links between structural change in employment and the level of economic development. The model is a modified version of that of Rowthorn - Wells (1987). The theoretical analysis is supplemented with simple econometric tests which illustrate how the modified Rowthorn - Wells model can be used (i) to motivate empirical estimates of the link between the level of development and structures of employment, and (ii) to illustrate structural distortions under command economies.

The construction industry should move from conventional construction method and adopt the industrialisation concept, to increase productivity and deliver quality construction end products. Industrialisation is the combination of a large market to divide into fractions the investment in strategies and innovation, in return, of simplifying the production and, therefore, reducing the costs. The introduction of Degree of Industrialisation by Roger-Bruno Richard is critical to the construction industry. The five degrees of industrialisation are prefabrication, mechanisation, automation, robotics and reproduction. Richard’s Degree of Industrialisation is in line with the Malaysian government’s vision to be a developed nation by 2020, to push forward the use of innovative technologies in most industries including the construction industry. The adoption of industrialisation and innovations in the Malaysian construction industry has the potential to solve the current problems in the construction industry. The problems are the inferior quality of products and processes, a poor site working conditions, low construction productivity, high construction cost, relying on foreign workers and lack of skill labours. The adoption of industrialisation and innovations promote sustainability in the construction environment. The objectives of the study are to investigate whether the adoption of industrialisation in the construction environment promotes sustainability and to identify the current level of industrialisation of the Malaysian construction industry. The methodologies of the study are semi-structure interview and observation. The Malaysian construction industry is ready to embrace industrialisation in construction environment in limited areas and industrialisation promotes sustainability in the construction environment.

Industrialisation is seen as one of the philosophies that can be employed to be able to increase the productivity of the construction industry. There are many forms and classifications of industrialisation and these have to be put in the context while seeking improvement of productivity by industrialisation. A systems approach is used to analyse the players and factors for industrialisation of the construction sector. Case studies were used to study industrialisation in the construction sector in a developing country. Performance metrics are suggested and used to measure the extent of industrialization in Uganda. It is concluded that the level of industrialisation in Uganda seems to be low. However, there is a need for a wider comparison in order to come up with generic indicators.

The present research project aims to contribute to the developmental literature on Mexico’s industrialisation. In pursuing this, it will deviate from previous studies of Mexico’s industrialisation where the state’s federal level is generally the main focus. In contrast, this thesis highlights multilevel characteristics with the objective of providing a new perspective regarding state-led industrialisation. The research questions for this project will thus be as follows: to what extent have subnational actors contributed to industrial transformation in Mexico? Then, as a following objective, this thesis will examine how these industrialising efforts have been consolidated at a subnational level. To address these objectives, two subnational case studies will be compared. The states of Nuevo Leon – Mexico’s early industrialiser and one of its bigger Northern states— and Queretaro –a catching-up state located in the centre, which is among the smallest in terms of territory and population. Using these case studies, it will be argued that in the case of Mexico, the state-society alliances necessary for industrial transformation have been formulated at the subnational, rather than national, level. As a result, these alliances have given way to parallel patterns of industrial policy and state-society relations enabling both subnational states to achieve rapid industrialisation. Overall, this thesis aims to make two main contributions to the existing literature on state-led industrialisation. First, by undertaking more of a long term approach, it aims to examine the institutional origins and evolution of industrial policy in Mexico. Secondly, due to Mexico’s more diffuse industrialisation, this research hopes to provide a testimony of the more multileveled characteristics that successful industrialisation has had in the Mexican case. Having undertaken this examination, the thesis also contributes to an agenda to broaden the explanatory scope of the literature on state-led industrialisation.

Cette thèse approfondit l'analyse des déterminants de la concentration urbaine et de leur effet à différents stades de développement. De manière générale, l'analyse empirique porte sur les pays en développement examinés sur la période 1950-2000. Après une description des tendances des inégalités urbaines dans ces pays (évolution de l'urbanisation, de la primatie et de la hiérarchie urbaines), l'analyse en 3 groupes de niveau de revenu par tête confirme l'existence de trajectoires particulières des taux d'urbanisation et de la primatie urbaine qui diffèrent significativement selon l'étape de développement considérée. Certains facteurs peuvent encourager une accélération de l'urbanisation et sa concentration dans les villes principales lors des premières étapes du développement. Il s'agit notamment de l'exode rural et du faible niveau d'ouverture économique. D'autres facteurs peuvent freiner voire infléchir la progression du degré de primatie urbaine lors des stades plus avancés de développement, qui semble suivre une courbe en cloche. C'est le cas d'une forte ouverture internationale, d'un faible degré de protection commerciale, d'un réseau routier dense, des coûts de transport interrégionaux faibles et des spécialisations productives plus orientées vers des industries technologiques. Ces phénomènes d'évolution relativement différente des catégories d'agglomérations consécutive à l'évolution des structures industrielles et productives locales, au cours du développement, sont particulièrement examinés dans le cas du Maroc. The aim of this thesis is to analyze the determinants of the urban concentration and their effect at different levels of development. The empirical analysis focuses on the developing countries over the period 1950-2000 grouped by level of per capita income. The results confirm the existence of specific trajectories of urbanization rate and urban primacy which differs meaningfully according to the stage of development considered. Certain factors encourage urbanization and its concentration in major cities in the early stages of development. Other factors may influence or even stop the tendency toward urban primacy in the advanced stages of development, which seems to follow bell shaped curve. These phenomena of evolution of city size according to the evolution of industrial structures and local production, during development, are particularly examined in the case of Morocco. Gradually since the 1980’s, a sectoral and geographical redeployment of industrial activities tends to occur. The decline in the primacy of the Metropolitan Area of Grand Casablanca is the result of a double movement: the relocation of a number of activities based on economies of scale and low-wage allowing urban deconcentration non-compensated by the location of medium-technology industries sensitive to agglomeration economies which increase urban concentration

Ce n'est qu'a partir de la revolution industrielle que s'est determinee la bipolarisation du monde en un centre dote d'une economie industrialisee et une peripherie a economie non-industrialisee, specialisee dans la production des matieres premieres et des produits agricoles necessaires a l'expansion industrielle et a l'accumulation du capital du centre. Conscients de cette forme d'exploitation et de dependance deoulant de la deterioration des termes de l'echange, les pays peripheriques voyaient dans l'industrialisation la seule voie royale de leur developpement economique et social. Cette derniere devenait, des lors, le noyau central de l'analyse economique. A cet egard, des theories de croissance et de developpement se sont developpees et organisees, a partir des annees 50, permettant ainsi aux pays sous-developpes de determiner leur politique d'industrialisation (industrialisation par substitution aux importations, industries-industrialisantes, industrialisation par promotion aux exportations) et leur politique technologique (labour-intensive ou capital-intensive). Ainsi, l'algerie, au lendemain de son independance, s'est orientee vers une strategie d'industriesindustrialisantes a forte intensite-capitalistique. Pour realiser un tel objectif, le concours des societes multinationales s'imposait non seulement pour le financement mais aussi pour le transfert des technologies. Une telle politique fut vouee a l'echec en ce sens qu'en voulant acceder a son independance economique, l'algerie s'est paradoxalement retrouvee prise au piege de quatre dependances qui s'entremelent, aujourd'hui, pour accentuer les effets de la crise economico-sociale du pays
It is from the industrial revolution that the world's bipolarization was been determined in a center with industrial economic and peripheral countries with under-industrial economic, specialized in primary matter production and agricol product necessary to the industrial expansion and to the capital accumulation of the center. Conscious of this exploitation for and this dependance which come from the terms of trade change deterioration, the peripheral countries looked the industrialization-like the only way to their economic and social development. The industrialization became, in that moment, the central nucleus of the economic analysis. In this way, several theories of economic growth and economic development are developed and organized, form 1950, to permit the underdeveloped countries to determine their industrial policy (import substitution, promotion of manufactured exports, heavy industries) and their technological policy (labour-intensive or capital-intensive). This, as soon as algeria tooks her independence, her economic policy was tending towards a strategy of heavy industries with high capital-intensive. To realize this objective, the international societies concourse was necessary not only financially but also for the technological transfert as well. This policy was bound to fail in that algeria wanted to have an independent economic, but she, paradoxically, was found her economy between four dependances which have accentuated, now, the economic and social crisis of the country

L'industrialisation de la peninsule de tanger, rentre dans le cadre de la promotion regionale. Elle obeit ainsi a la politique industrielle adoptee par le gouvernement en vue de son developpement economique. De nombreuses mesures ont ete prises pour encourager l'investissement industriel dans la region. Le nouveau code des investissements industriels met l'accent sur les deductions fiscales et les facilites d'installation. Deux zones industrielles ont ete crees a tanger et a tetouan; une troisieme est prevue a ksar-el-kebir. Durant ces vingts dernieres annees, plusieurs etablissements industriels se sont installes dans la peninsule. Mais ils sont plus concentres a tanger qu'a tetouan et les autres villes ne comptent que peu d'unites. La principale caracteristique est la forte domination de l'industrie textile. Cette branche emploie pres de 70% de la main-d'oeuvre industrielle de la peninsule, suivie de l'industrie alimen -taire et de l'industrie des materiaux de construction. Le capital engage est national dans certains cas, dans d'autres, il est associe a des capitaux etrangers, surtout allemands et francais. La participation du capital etranger a permis l'ouverture des marches europeens qui absorbent une part importante de la production. La proliferation des etablissements industriels a modifie le paysage urbain et a engendre dans certains cas le developpement des bidonvilles et a encourage l'exode rural
The peninsula the tangier peninsula industrialisation is the framework of aregional promotion. It's thus on the same ligne of the industrial policy adopted by the government to develop its economy. A lot of steps have been taken to encourage the industrial investisment in the region. A new code of industrial investisment put the stress on fiscal deduction an on installation's facilities. Two industrial areas have been createad in tangier and tetouan. The third one schedulded to be in ksar-el-kebir. Many plants set up in the peninsula during the last two decades, but they are more concentrated in tangier than in tetouan. In the other towns, there are just some plants. The main caracteristic is the great dominance of textile industry this branch employs nearly 70% of industrial manpower in thepeninsula, followed by the foodstuffs and construction equipement industry. In some cases the capital invested is national and in the others there's an association with a foreign capital especially german and french capital. The participation of the foreign capital allowed the opening of the european markets which absorbs an important part of production. The plant proliferation has modified the urban scenery, has in some districts helped to develop shanty towns and to encourage the drift from the land

For more than 15 years, these economic zones have provided a window into the complexities of transforming African aspirations for industrialisation into realities. Through policy frameworks and incentives, Chinese firms have been encouraged to link with local economies. Despite varied outcomes, African support for industrial parks remains strong. This paper reviews methods that have been suggested by the development literature on diagnostics. We subdivide the variety of diagnostics into three types: revealing the most binding constraints to economy-wide growth; selecting sectors in which to diversify; and identifying sources of sectoral underperformance. Each diagnostic method is judged on whether it: provides a structured way of performing diagnostics; directs analysts towards the right questions; and is efficient in its use of data and resources. After reviewing a variety of methods, we argue that, with respect to growth diagnostics, the best approach is to combine Hausmann’s, Rodrik and Velasco’s Growth Diagnostics with more encompassing and forward-looking methods. In sectoral selection, Hausmann and Hidalgo’s 'Product Space' analysis can serve as an adequate base for choosing sectors in which to diversify, but this method must be tempered by a much more diverse set of indicators that matter for sectoral choice. Finally, diagnostics at the sectoral level can be performed through a sequence of methods: starting from easily collectable perceptions data and progressing to more data-heavy techniques, depending on the time and resources available.

La production agricole a subi de profondes transformations au cours des dernières décennies : spécialisation des entreprises, concentration au sein d’entreprises de plus en plus grandes, industrialisation des processus de production et intensification de l’usage des ressources. Toutefois, ces évolutions dans la production agricole masquent des différences entre les secteurs. Comment l’évolution sectorielle des productions agricoles a-t-elle façonné les territoires du Québec ? Dans une étude CIRANO (Royer et al. 2023), les auteurs analysent les dynamiques spatiales du secteur bioalimentaire sur plus de cinq décennies et identifient les principaux facteurs qui expliquent ces dynamiques. Il s’agit de la première étude qui examine les liens entre dynamiques spatiales et évolution sectorielle de l’agriculture.

Due to strong filial piety, parents(-in-law) play an important role in their adult daughters’ fertility decisions in Vietnam; women feel pressured to fulfil their duties to produce a male descendant for the family. However, rapid urbanisation and industrialisation mean that multigenerational households are becoming less common, despite having been the standard household structure for centuries. Based on the 2020–21 Vietnam Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey, we investigate if women who coreside with the parental generation are more likely to desire additional children. In an industrialised economy, grandparents may be an important source of childcare while simultaneously exerting pressure on their adult children to have additional children. Further, we explore the association of the sex of previous child(ren) to capture the pressure associated with son preference. Multivariate regressions reveal an association between coresiding with parents and the desire for a second child, regardless of the sex of the first child. Among women with two children, third-child desires do not appear to be associated with coresiding with parents but are substantially related to having two daughters. Given the strong two-child norm in Vietnam and previous policies implying negative consequences for parents with three or more children, few women show a desire for a third child. Those women who report a desire for a third child mostly have two daughters, reflecting societal norms about the need for a male heir.

Le secteur bioalimentaire québécois a subi de profondes transformations au cours des dernières décennies : spécialisation des entreprises et des territoires, concentration au sein d’entreprises de plus en plus grandes, industrialisation des processus de production et intensification de l’usage des ressources. Ces mouvements de fond masquent toutefois des évolutions différenciées selon les territoires. Quels sont les meilleurs outils pour accompagner un secteur en pleine restructuration et s’adapter aux dynamiques contrastées qui traversent l’agriculture québécoise ? Cette vaste étude propose un diagnostic clair de la situation en caractérisant les dynamiques spatiales du secteur bioalimentaire de 1961 à 2016. Par « dynamique spatiale », on entend la façon dont un phénomène se déploie sur les territoires ou change au cours du temps. Les auteurs s’intéressent à trois principaux phénomènes : la présence et la constitution de pôles sectoriels, la spécialisation territoriale agricole, et la concentration économique des secteurs sur le territoire. Cette recherche permet de mieux comprendre les facteurs qui ont façonné le développement de différents secteurs du bioalimentaire et de réfléchir aux impacts différenciés qu’ont pu avoir divers facteurs comme les politiques gouvernementales, les conditions agroclimatiques, les conditions de marché, la technologie, les facteurs sociétaux, culturels, démographiques selon le territoire. Les auteurs montrent combien les décisions gouvernementales de soutien ou d’encadrement du secteur bioalimentaire ont de lourdes conséquences territoriales, d’où l’importance que cette dimension soit prise en considération plus systématiquement et ce, dès l’élaboration des programmes, quels qu’ils soient.

Introduction u cours des deux derniers millénaires, il y a eu plusieurs façons de conserver, transmettre et même créer la connaissance ; la tradition orale, l’écrit manuscrit, l’écrit imprimé et l’écrit numérisé. La tradition orale et le manuscrit ont dominé pendant plus de 1400 ans, et ce, jusqu’à l’apparition du livre imprimé en 1451, résultant de l’invention mécanique de Gutenberg. Il faudra attendre un peu plus de 550 ans, avant que l’invention du support électronique déloge à son tour le livre imprimé, prenant une ampleur sans précédent grâce à la révolution numérique contemporaine, résultat du maillage des technologies de l’informatique, de la robotique et de la science des données. Les premières universités qui sont nées en Occident, au Moyen Âge, ont développé cette tradition orale de la connaissance tout en multipliant l’usage du manuscrit créant ainsi de véritables communautés de maîtres et d’étudiants ; la venue de l’imprimerie permettra la multiplication des universités où l’oral et l’écrit continueront de jouer un rôle déterminant dans la création et la transmission des connaissances même si le « support » a évolué du manuscrit à l’imprimé puis vers le numérique. Au cours de toutes ces années, le modèle de l’université s’est raffiné et perfectionné sur une trajectoire somme toute assez linéaire en élargissant son rôle dans l’éducation à celui-ci de la recherche et de l’innovation, en multipliant les disciplines offertes et les clientèles desservies. L’université de chaque ville universitaire est devenue une institution florissante et indispensable à son rayonnement international, à un point tel que l’on mesure souvent sa contribution par la taille de sa clientèle étudiante, l’empreinte de ses campus, la grandeur de ses bibliothèques spécialisées ; c’est toutefois la renommée de ses chercheurs qui consacre la réputation de chaque université au cours de cette longue trajectoire pendant laquelle a pu s’établir la liberté universitaire. « Les libertés universitaires empruntèrent beaucoup aux libertés ecclésiastiques » : Étudiants et maîtres, qu'ils furent, ou non, hommes d'Église, furent assimilés à des clercs relevant de la seule justice ecclésiastique, réputée plus équitable. Mais ils échappèrent aussi largement à la justice ecclésiastique locale, n'étant justiciables que devant leur propre institution les professeurs et le recteur, chef élu de l’université - ou devant le pape ou ses délégués. Les libertés académiques marquèrent donc l’émergence d'un droit propre, qui ménageait aux maîtres et aux étudiants une place à part dans la société. Ce droit était le même, à travers l'Occident, pour tous ceux qui appartenaient à ces institutions supranationales que furent, par essence, les premières universités. À la fin du Moyen Âge, l'affirmation des États nationaux obligea les libertés académiques à s'inscrire dans ce nouveau cadre politique, comme de simples pratiques dérogatoires au droit commun et toujours sujettes à révision. Vestige vénérable de l’antique indépendance et privilège octroyé par le prince, elles eurent donc désormais un statut ambigu » . La révolution numérique viendra fragiliser ce statut. En effet, la révolution numérique vient bouleverser cette longue trajectoire linéaire de l’université en lui enlevant son quasi monopole dans la conservation et le partage du savoir parce qu’elle rend plus facile et somme toute, moins coûteux l’accès à l’information, au savoir et aux données. Le numérique est révolutionnaire comme l’était l’imprimé et son influence sur l’université, sera tout aussi considérable, car cette révolution impacte radicalement tous les secteurs de l’économie en accélérant la robotisation et la numérisation des processus de création, de fabrication et de distribution des biens et des services. Ces innovations utilisent la radio-identification (RFID) qui permet de mémoriser et de récupérer à distance des données sur les objets et l’Internet des objets qui permet aux objets d’être reliés automatiquement à des réseaux de communications .Ces innovations s’entrecroisent aux technologies de la réalité virtuelle, à celles des algorithmiques intelligentes et de l’intelligence artificielle et viennent littéralement inonder de données les institutions et les organisations qui doivent alors les analyser, les gérer et les protéger. Le monde numérique est né et avec lui, a surgi toute une série de compétences radicalement nouvelles que les étudiants, les enseignants et les chercheurs de nos universités doivent rapidement maîtriser pour évoluer dans ce Nouveau Monde, y travailler et contribuer à la rendre plus humain et plus équitable. En effet, tous les secteurs de l’activité commerciale, économique, culturelle ou sociale exigent déjà clairement des connaissances et des compétences numériques et technologiques de tous les participants au marché du travail. Dans cette nouvelle logique industrielle du monde numérique, les gagnants sont déjà bien identifiés. Ce sont les fameux GAFAM (Google, Apple, Facebook, Amazon et Microsoft) suivis de près par les NATU (Netflix, Airbnb, Tesla et Uber) et par les géants chinois du numérique, les BATX (Baidu, Alibaba, Tenant et Xiaomi). Ces géants sont alimentés par les recherches, les innovations et les applications mobiles (APPs) créées par les partenaires de leurs écosystèmes regroupant, sur différents campus d’entreprises, plusieurs des cerveaux qui sont au cœur de cette révolution numérique. L’université voit donc remise en question sa capacité traditionnelle d’attirer, de retenir et de promouvoir les artisans du monde de demain. Son aptitude à former des esprits critiques et à contribuer à la transmission des valeurs universelles est également ébranlée par ce tsunami de changements. Il faut cependant reconnaître que les facultés de médecine, d’ingénierie et de sciences naturelles aux États-Unis qui ont développé des contacts étroits, abondants et suivis avec les hôpitaux, les grandes entreprises et l’administration publique et cela dès la fin du 19e siècle ont été plus en mesure que bien d’autres, de recruter et retenir les gens de talent. Elle ont énormément contribué à faire avancer les connaissances scientifiques et la scolarisation en sciences appliquées ..La concentration inouïe des Prix Nobel scientifiques aux États-Unis est à cet égard très convaincante . La révolution numérique contemporaine survient également au moment même où de grands bouleversements frappent la planète : l’urgence climatique, le vieillissement des populations, la « déglobalisation », les déplacements des populations, les guerres, les pandémies, la crise des inégalités, de l’éthique et des démocraties. Ces bouleversements interpellent les universitaires et c’est pourquoi leur communauté doit adopter une raison d’être et ainsi renouveler leur mission afin des mieux répondre à ces enjeux de la civilisation. Cette communauté doit non seulement se doter d’une vision et des modes de fonctionnement adaptés aux nouvelles réalités liées aux technologies numériques, mais elle doit aussi tenir compte de ces grands bouleversements. Tout ceci l’oblige à s’intégrer à des écosystèmes où les connaissances sont partagées et où de nouvelles compétences doivent être rapidement acquises. Le but de ce texte est de mieux cerner l’ampleur du défi que pose le monde numérique au milieu universitaire et de proposer quelques idées pouvant alimenter la réflexion des universitaires dans cette démarche d’adaptation au monde numérique. Or, ma conviction la plus profonde c’est que la révolution numérique aura des impacts sur nos sociétés et notre civilisation aussi grands que ceux provoqués par la découverte de l’imprimerie et son industrialisation au 15e siècle. C’est pourquoi la première section de ce document est consacrée à un rappel historique de la révolution de l’imprimerie par Gutenberg alors que la deuxième section illustrera comment les caractéristiques de la révolution numérique viennent soutenir cette conviction si profonde. Une troisième section fournira plus de détails sur le défi d’adaptation que le monde numérique pose aux universités alors que la quatrième section évoquera les contours du changement de paradigme que cette adaptation va imposer. La cinquième section servira à illustrer un scénario de rêves qui permettra de mieux illustrer l’ampleur de la gestion du changement qui guette les universitaires. La conclusion permettra de revenir sur quelques concepts et principes clefs pour guider la démarche vers l’action. L’université ne peut plus « être en haut et seule », elle doit être « au centre et avec » des écosystèmes de partenariats multiples, dans un modèle hybride physique/virtuel. C’est ainsi qu’elle pourra conserver son leadership historique de vigie du savoir et des connaissances d’un monde complexe, continuer d’établir l’authenticité des faits et imposer la nécessaire rigueur de la science et de l’objectivité.
