The aim of presented study was to explore barriers and facilitators of optimal support for social and developmental outcomes for people with ASD. The survey was based on the semistructured interviews with parents of people with ASD, as well as professionals supporting persons with ASD. Thematic analysis of the data was viewed with regard to positive and negative practices that essentially serve as barriers and facilitators of optimal support of individuals with ASD. The results showed three levels of perceived barriers and facilitators of optimal support: (1) individual – related to the level of autistic impairment, (2) attitudinal – related to social interpretation of individual behaviour and needs, and (3) systemic – related to the education and welfare approach and practice at macro level. Insights from viewpoints of key stakeholders represent indispensable considerations in promotion of health, equity and well-beingof individuals with ASD and to inform the development of an individualized support system based on the person-centred planning approach.

AbstractBackgroundStudies on the individual gender-specific risk and familial co-aggregation of suicidal behaviour in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are lacking.MethodsWe conducted a matched case-cohort study applying conditional logistic regression models on 54 168 individuals recorded in 1987–2013 with ASD in Swedish national registers: ASD without ID n = 43 570 (out of which n = 19035, 43.69% with ADHD); ASD + ID n = 10 598 (out of which n = 2894 individuals, 27.31% with ADHD), and 270 840 controls, as well as 347 155 relatives of individuals with ASD and 1 735 775 control relatives.ResultsThe risk for suicidal behaviours [reported as odds ratio OR (95% confidence interval CI)] was most increased in the ASD without ID group with comorbid ADHD [suicide attempt 7.25 (6.79–7.73); most severe attempts i.e. requiring inpatient stay 12.37 (11.33–13.52); suicide 13.09 (8.54–20.08)]. The risk was also increased in ASD + ID group [all suicide attempts 2.60 (2.31–2.92); inpatient only 3.45 (2.96–4.02); suicide 2.31 (1.16–4.57)]. Females with ASD without ID had generally higher risk for suicidal behaviours than males, while both genders had highest risk in the case of comorbid ADHD [females, suicide attempts 10.27 (9.27–11.37); inpatient only 13.42 (11.87–15.18); suicide 14.26 (6.03–33.72); males, suicide attempts 5.55 (5.10–6.05); inpatient only 11.33 (9.98–12.86); suicide 12.72 (7.77–20.82)]. Adjustment for psychiatric comorbidity attenuated the risk estimates. In comparison to controls, relatives of individuals with ASD also had an increased risk of suicidal behaviour.ConclusionsClinicians treating patients with ASD should be vigilant for suicidal behaviour and consider treatment of psychiatric comorbidity.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a medical condition in which an individual has certain behavior abnormalities, language impairment, and communication problems in the social world. It is a kind of a neurological setback that hinders the ability of an individual. In this work, an effort is made to propose an efficient machine learning-based classifier to assess the individuals on the parameters laid down for ASD based upon the traits captured from the ASD-affected individuals. The standard dataset of 1,054 toddlers is taken, which consists of two categories of toddlers, namely affected by ASD and not affected. The dataset contains 17 features, amongst which 12 features have been selected using correlation-based feature selection, and the random tree classifier gave the best overall performance with an accuracy of 98.9% with 17 features and 99.7% with the selected feature set. The results thus obtained have been compared with other state-of-the-art methods, and the proposed approach outperforms most of them.

Purpose – A wealth of research on autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has led to increased understanding and identification of each of these developmental disorders. Existing literature has sparked controversial discussions regarding whether aspects of ASD and ADHD predispose individuals to criminality. The purpose of this paper is to explore the link between these conditions and offending. Design/methodology/approach – A review of the literature on ASD, ADHD and offending was undertaken. This paper looks at the particular focus of the literature on the involvement of individuals with ADHD and ASD within the criminal justice system. Findings – There is some evidence of a link between ADHD and criminality. However, the relationship between ASD and offending is a little more difficult to ascertain. Complicating this further is the relatively unexplored subject of comorbid ASD/ADHD and criminal behaviour. This paper found that additional cognitive deficits and conduct problems are associated with comorbid ASD/ADHD, highlighting the need for further research and development of interventions. Originality/value – This paper seeks to examine whether predictions can be made with regards to what offending behaviour may look like in an individual with comorbid ASD/ADHD. This paper reviews the literature on offending in relation to both disorders to examine whether predictions can be made with regards to what the offending behaviour of an individual with ASD and ADHD may look like.

Abstract Previous studies have provided evidence for an alteration of genetic coexpression in schizophrenia (SCZ). However, such analyses have thus far lacked biological specificity for individual genes, which may be critical for identifying illness-relevant effects. Therefore, we applied machine learning to identify gene-specific coexpression differences at the individual subject level and compared these between individuals with SCZ, bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder (MDD), autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and healthy controls. Utilizing transcriptome-wide gene expression data from 21 independent datasets, comprising a total of 9509 participants, we identified a reproducible decrease of BCL11A coexpression across 4 SCZ datasets that showed diagnostic specificity for SCZ when compared with ASD and MDD. We further demonstrate that individual-level coexpression differences can be combined in multivariate coexpression scores that show reproducible illness classification across independent datasets in SCZ and ASD. This study demonstrates that machine learning can capture gene-specific coexpression differences at the individual subject level for SCZ and identify novel biomarker candidates.

The diagnosis oj Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is increasing at an alarming rate, which challenges school transition and adult service systems to provide necessary supports to these individuals. As a key variable to quality oj life and community living, employment should be a primary goal Jor adults with ASD. However, special education and rehabilitation service systems, already limited in their capacity to support youth and young adults with disabilities, will be increasingly challenged to place job seekers with ASD into employment. The diversity and severity oj functional limitations experienced by individuals with ASD require an approach to employment focusing on the individual and immediate environment, and utilizing multiple methods. This article examines research literature related to individuals with ASD and proposes an ecological, multi-modal approach for establishing employment of individuals with ASD. Data are presented regarding a case example involving one young adult with ASD to illustrate the approach.

Individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and complex communication needs often rely on augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) as a means of functional communication. This meta-analysis investigated how individual characteristics moderate effectiveness of three types of aided AAC: the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS), speech-generating devices (SGDs), and other picture-based AAC. Effectiveness was measured via the Improvement Rate Difference. Results indicated that AAC has small to moderate effects on speech outcomes, and that SGDs appear to be most effective when considering any outcome measure with individuals with ASD without comorbid intellectual/developmental disorders (IDD). PECS appears to be most effective when considering any outcome measure with individuals with ASD and IDD. SGDs and PECS were the most effective type of AAC for preschoolers, when aggregating across outcome measures. No difference was found between systems for elementary-aged and older individuals.

Annotation:
Data on individual subjects, which are increasingly gathered and exchanged, provide a rich amount of information that can inform statistical and policy analysis in a meaningful way. However, due to the legal obligations surrounding such data, this wealth of information is often not fully exploited in order to protect the confidentiality of respondents. The issue is thus the following: how to ensure a sufficient level of data protection to meet releasers’ concerns in terms of legal and ethical requirements, while still offering users a reasonable level of information. This question has raised a range concerns about the privacy/information trade-off and has driven a quest for best practices that can be both useful to users but also respectful of individuals’ privacy. Statistical disclosure control research has historically provided the analytical apparatus through which the privacy/information trade-off can be assessed and implemented. In recent years, the literature has burgeoned in many directions. In particular, techniques applicable to micro data offer a wide variety of tools to protect the confidentiality of respondents while maximizing the information content of the data released, for the benefit of society at large. Such diversity is undoubtedly useful but has several major drawbacks. In fact, there is currently a clear lack of agreement and clarity as to the appropriate choice of tools in a given context, and as a consequence, there is no comprehensive view (or at best an incomplete one) of the relative performances of the techniques available. The practical scope of current micro data protection methods is not fully exploited precisely because there is no overarching framework: all methods generally carry their own analytical environment, underlying approaches and definitions of privacy and information. Moreover, the evaluation of utility and privacy for each method is metric and data-dependent, meaning that comparisons across different methods and datasets is a daunting task. Against this backdrop, this thesis focuses on establishing some common grounds for individual data anonymization by developing a new, universal approach. Recent contributions to the literature point to the fact that permutations happen to be the essential principle upon which individual data anonymization can be based. In this thesis, we demonstrate that this principle allows for the proposal of a universal analytical environment for data anonymization. The first contribution of this thesis takes an ex-post approach by proposing some universal measures of disclosure risk and information loss that can be computed in a simple fashion and used for the evaluation of any anonymization method, independently of the context under which they operate. In particular, they exhibit distributional independence. These measures establish a common language for comparing different mechanisms, all with potentially varying parametrizations applied to the same data set or to different data sets. The second contribution of this thesis takes an ex-ante approach by developing a new approach to data anonymization. Bringing data anonymization closer to cryptography, it formulates a general cipher based on permutation keys which appears to be equivalent to a general form of rank swapping. Beyond all the existing methods that this cipher can universally reproduce, it also offers a new way to practice data anonymization based on the ex-ante exploration of different permutation structures. The subsequent study of the cipher’s properties additionally reveals new insights as to the nature of the task of anonymization taken at a general level of functioning. The final two contributions of this thesis aim at exploring two specific areas using the above results. The first area is longitudinal data anonymization. Despite the fact that the SDC literature offers a wide variety of tools suited to different contexts and data types, there have been very few attempts to deal with the challenges posed by longitudinal data. This thesis thus develops a general framework and some associated metrics of disclosure risk and information loss, tailored to the specific challenges posed by longitudinal data anonymization. Notably, it builds on a permutation approach where the effect of time on time-variant attributes can be seen as an anonymization method that can be captured by temporal permutations. The second area considered is synthetic data. By challenging the information and privacy guarantees of synthetic data, it is shown that any synthetic data set can always be expressed as a permutation of the original data, in a way similar to non-synthetic SDC techniques. In fact, releasing synthetic data sets with the same privacy properties but with an improved level of information appears to be invariably possible as the marginal distributions can always be preserved without increasing risk. On the privacy front, this leads to the consequence that the distinction drawn in the literature between non-synthetic and synthetic data is not so clear-cut. Indeed, it is shown that the practice of releasing several synthetic data sets for a single original data set entails privacy issues that do not arise in non-synthetic anonymization.

This work project analyzes the impact of being dismissed, in the aftermath of the 2008 economic crisis, for highly-qualified individuals, as well as the strategies they used and the key competences in the job search. Considering the individual impact, it was possible to aggregate the sample in three groups: those who were hurt, those who saw an opportunity and those who kept a “healthy level of concern”. Their personality traits and competences deeply influenced the unemployment period and the strategies used. Being network the most successful one, people who chose a systematic and organized approach were emphasized.

Computer usage is once again going through changes. Leaving behind the experiences of mainframes with terminal access and personal computers with graphical user interfaces, we are now headed for handheld devices and ubiquitous computing; we are facing the prospect of interacting with electronic services. These network-enabled functional components provide benefit to users regardless of their whereabouts, access method, or access device. The market place is also changing, from suppliers of monolithic oÆ-the-shelf applications, to open source and collaboratively developed specialized services. It is within this new arena of computing that we describe Individual Service Provisioning, a design and implementation that enables end users to create and provision their own services. Individual Service Provisioning consists of three components: a personal service environment, in which users can access and manage their services; ServiceDesigner, a tool with which to create new services; and the provisioning system, which turns end users into service providers.

Aim: We aim to estimate the global prevalence of consanguinity among the ASD families and compare that among different populations. Methods: Meta-analysis of observational studies reporting prevalence of consanguinity among ASD families was searched systematically in important databases including EMBASE, PubMed and Academic Search Complete. Individual studies were screened by two reviewers independently, extracted data and assessed the risk of bias using a risk of bias tool (Hoy’s tool). Random Effect model was used to calculate pooled weighted estimates due to considerable heterogeneity. Subgroups analysis was also calculated. Results: 10 publications were identified based on our inclusion criteria from 8 different countries, 4 of them were from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and the rest were from: Lebanon (2 studies), Egypt, Jordan, Iran, and Israel). Studies varied in ASD cases numbers as it ranged between 49 -500, and the total ASD individuals in all studies were 1581. All studies address consanguinity among the ASD families despite the variation in the methods. The pooled estimate of consanguinity among ASD families was 24% Subgroup analysis by the study country led to a higher pooled estimate of consanguinity of 38% in the GCC countries compared to other than GCC countries with a pooled estimate of 16%. In addition, the overall odd ratio calculated from the case-control studies included in our meta-analysis was 1.5. Discussion: To our knowledge, this is the first meta-analysis that studied the prevalence of consanguinity among ASD families worldwide. Children born to consanguineous parents have been reported to have lower social behavior and cognitive ability, which are the main problems with ASD children. Our study qualitatively reviewed the prevalence of consanguinity among ASD families throughout the world and 10 eligible studies from eight countries were identified. We quantitatively synthesized the results and the key findings of this study showed a 24% overall pooled estimate of consanguinity among ASD families. GCC countries showed a high estimated pooled prevalence of consanguinity among ASD families as 38% compared to countries other than GCC 16%, which was higher than our overall pooled prevalence. This high estimate among GCC countries can be related to the high rates of consanguineous marriage in the GCC countries compared to the worldwide rates (20%). In Qatar, the rate of consanguineous marriage reported as 54%. This high rates among GCC countries may be due to factors like rooted cultural beliefs, social life and customs in addition to, economic benefits of keeping wealth within the families. Conclusion: The globally estimated pooled consanguinity prevalence among ASD patients was 24%, GCC countries showed a higher pooled prevalence (38%)

"The study of the peculiarities of speech of children with atypical development is necessary for the development of educational programs, children’s socialization and adaptation in society. The aim of this study is to determine the acoustic features of voice and speech of children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) as a possible additional diagnostic criterion. The multiplicity of symptomatology, different age of its manifestation, and the presence of a leading symptom complex individually for each child make it difficult to diagnose ASD. To determine the specificity of speech features of ASD, we analyzed the speech of children with developmental disabilities in which speech disorders accompany the disease - Down syndrome (DS), intellectual disabilities (ID), mixed specific developmental disorders (MDD). The features that reflect the main physiological processes occurring in the speech tract during voice and speech production are selected for analysis. The speech of 300 children aged 4-16 years was analyzed. Speech files are selected from the speech database ""AD_Child.Ru"" (Lyakso et al., 2019). Acoustic features of voice and speech, which are specific for different developmental disorders, were determined. The speech of ASD children is characterized by: high pitch values (high voice); pitch variability; high values for the third formant (emotional) and its intensity causing ""atypical"" spectrogram of the speech signal; high values of vowel articulation index (VAI). The speech of children with DS is characterized by the maximal duration of vowels in words; low pitch values (low voice); a wide range of values of the VAI depending on the difficulty of speech material; low values of the third formant; unformed most of consonant phonemes. The characteristics of speech of children with ID are: high values of vowel’s duration in words, the pitch, and the third formant, low values of the VAI; of MDD - low pitch values and high values of the VAI. Based on the identified peculiarities specific to each disease, the set of acoustic features specific to ASD can be considered as a biomarker of autism and used as an additional diagnostic criterion. This will allow a timely diagnose, appoint treatment and develop individual programs for children. Speech characteristics of children with ID, DS, and MDD can be considered to a greater extent in the training and socialization of children and used in the development of training programs taking into account individual peculiarities of children."

Abstract Encouraging research shows reductions in the number of disruptive behaviors for children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) when wearing compression shirts. However, current studies do not consider the amount of pressure compression shirts apply to the body and how different amounts of pressure applied to the body may lead to different outcomes for children diagnosed with ASD. The purpose of this proof of concept research project was to develop a method for measuring the pressure applied by a compression shirt at a specific location on the body. This study used conductive thread as the principle element to measure the compression applied by a garment onto the body, specifically the arm. It was found that for the specific stitch and thread tested, the relationship between the displacement the sensor exhibits and the change in resistance was 25.95 Ω/m. With this relation, the pressure applied by a compression garment to a mannequin arm and the arms of four participants was found. A general trend that the measured pressure applied by a garment onto the body directly correlated with increasing individual arm circumference was found.

Personalized and timely feedback has the potential to improve an individual’s performance on a wide variety of engineering tasks. The ability to capture an individual’s affective state(s) and performance on a task is a key component needed to advance personalization of feedback. While automated methods exist for quantifying task performance, the ability to quantify an individual’s affective state(s) remains an open research area. Existing methods for quantifying an individual’s affective state(s) are challenging to implement where real-time assessment is needed (e.g., engineering workshop environments). This has sparked a growing interest for automated systems capable of inferring individuals’ affective state(s), based on their projected facial or body cues. However, existing methods attempt to employ a general model to label an individual’s affective state(s) into discrete categories, such as fear, joy, surprise, etc. Nonetheless, emotional expressions are far more complex, as individual differences in facial expressions, may deteriorate the performance of these systems in providing personalized feedback. To overcome these limitations, this work proposes a machine learning method for predicting an individual’s performance on a task by utilizing his/her unique facial keypoint data, hereby bypassing the need to infer his/her discrete affective states. A case study involving 31 participants is presented. The support vector machine model employed to predict an individual’s performance yielded an accuracy of 77.15% for an individual-task specific model. In contrast, a general model yielded an accuracy of only 52.69%, hereby supporting the authors’ argument that individual-task specific models are more suitable for advancing personalized feedback.

This paper investigates the relationship between interaction behaviors and the cognitive characteristics of participating individuals in engineering design teams engaged in concept generation. Individual characteristics were measured using the Kirton Adaption-Innovation inventory (KAI), which assesses an individual’s cognitive preference for structure in seeking and responding to change. Team interactions were measured using the Interaction Dynamics Notation (IDN), which allows interaction behaviors to be quantitatively analyzed. A correlation analysis revealed statistically significant correlations between individual characteristics and specific interaction behaviors, and ideation utterances. An interaction sequence analysis of the team data also revealed specific interaction sequences associated with greater probabilities of idea occurrence within the team. These findings serve as a first step towards building a cognitive-behavioral model of engineering design team performance.
