Abstract The connections between the Indian Freedom movement and the Kenyan Indian diaspora after the First World War led to the involvement of the Indian National Congress and Gandhi in the struggle of the Kenyan Indians for equality and equal treatment with the British white settlers in Kenya. The Congress considered that the success of the equality struggle in Kenya would also lead to equal treatment of Indians in India itself. This was consistent with the prevailing political goal of the freedom movement in India in 1919, which was self-rule through Dominion Status under the British Crown. But when the struggle of the Kenya Indians failed and equality was denied to them by the famous Devonshire Declaration in 1923, there the Indian freedom movement realized that this signalled unequal status and a denial of self-rule to India itself. Historic consequences followed. This was the turning point and over the years immediately after the Kenyan decision (1923–1929), the Indian National Congress changed its political aim from Dominion Status to Full Independence as a Republic, realized over the 17 years to 1947.

Over the years, much of the folklore of breastfeeding has been lost because women did not write history, they told stories. This article shares breastfeeding lore from stories told to the authors by American Indian women from the Eastern Shoshone and Northern Arapaho tribes on the Wind River Reservation near Lander, Wyoming. These women related stories describing treatment for milk fever (mastitis), the white man’s influence on mother/baby separation and its outcome, elderly women inducing lactation, breastfeeding and birth control, and how women dressed for ease of breastfeeding in former times. It is with appreciation for other cultures that we add this information from American Indians to the archives of breastfeeding history.

Introduction. Some groups of Asian Americans, especially Asian Indians, experience higher rates of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) compared with other groups in the U.S. Barriers in accessing medical care partly may explain this higher risk as a result of delayed screening for cardiovascular risk factors and timely initiation of preventive treatment. Methods. Cross-sectional data were utilized from the 2006 to 2015 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS). Barriers to accessing medical care included no place to seek medical care when needed, no healthcare coverage, no care due to cost, delayed care due to cost, inability to afford medication, or not seeing a doctor in the past 12 months. Results. The study sample consisted of 18,150 Asian individuals, of whom 20.5% were Asian Indian, 20.5% were Chinese, 23.4% were Filipino, and 35.6% were classified as “Other Asians”. The mean (standard error) age was 43.8 (0.21) years and 53% were women. Among participants with history of hypertension, diabetes mellitus, or ASCVD (prevalence = 25%), Asian Indians were more likely to report delayed care due to cost (2.58 (1.14,5.85)), while Other Asians were more likely to report no care due to cost (2.43 (1.09,5.44)) or delayed care due to cost (2.35 (1.14,4.86)), compared with Chinese. Results among Filipinos were not statistically significant. Conclusions. Among Asians living in the U.S. with cardiovascular risk factors or ASCVD, Asian Indians and Other Asians are more likely to report delayed care or no care due to cost compared with Chinese.

Two thousand years before Grotius, Rachel, or Ayala recalled Europe to humanitarianism, ancient Indians had a body of rules for governing the relations between the States of the sub-continent in the event of armed conflicts. According to Professor A. L. Basham:“…in no other part of the ancient world were the relations of man and man, and of man and the state, so fair and humane… No other ancient law-giver proclaimed such noble ideals of fair play in battle as did Manu. In all her history of warfare Hindu India has few tales to tell of cities put to the sword or of the massacre of non-combatants. The ghastly sadism of the Kings of Assyria, who flayed their captives alive, is completely without parallel in ancient India. There was sporadic cruelty and oppression no doubt, but in comparison with conditions in other cultures, it was mild. To us the most striking feature of ancient Indian civilization is its humanity.”

Focusing on British Indian subjects who travelled to France in the early twentieth century and who resided in Paris, this article argues that these migrants occupied a position that was simultaneously privileged and invidious. It urges that closer attention be paid to the group for two reasons. First, British Indians in Paris were able to negotiate contentious and potentially hazardous political situations according to context and audience, sometimes mobilising their status as British subjects as a means of achieving limited preferential treatment from the French state, at other times making use of a certain conception of Frenchness to garner support among socialist and anti-imperial movements. Second, the policing of the group reveals collaboration and competition between imperial nation-states and between different anti-colonial movements, analysis of which can nuance the growing body of historical research on the policing of foreigners and colonial subjects in Europe.

From the perspective of the 1990s, scarcely an eyebrow would be raised by the news that in 1946 India complained internationally about South Africa's treatment of persons of Indian origin. It would be regarded as fully in keeping with the ethos – both domestic and international – of the age. Moreover, it would be seen as entirely appropriate that the complaint should have been lodged with the United Nations. For that body has not only become South Africa's scourge but has also played the leading role in the now-orthodox campaign against racism. Furthermore, if it were pointed out that this was, in fact, the very first occasion when anti-racist sentiments were given a significant international airing, the response might well be that the UN was set up to deal with just this kind of issue.

The past is the prologue. We must understand where we have been before we can understand where we are going. To understand the Blackfoot Nation and how we have come to where we are today, this thesis examines our history through Indian eyes from time immemorial to the present, using traditional narratives, writings of early European explorers and personal experience. The oral tradition of the First Nations people was a multi-media means of communication. Similarly, this thesis uses the media of the written word and a series of paintings to convey the story of the Blackfoot people. This thesis provides background and support, from the artist’s perspective, for the paintings that tell the story of the Blackfoot people and the events that contributed to the downfall of the once-powerful Nation. With the knowledge of where we have been, we can learn how to move forward.

This dissertation is a study of the Eastern Apache nations and their struggle to survive with their culture intact against numerous enemies intent on destroying them. It is a synthesis of published secondary and primary materials, supported with archival materials, primarily from the Béxar Archives. The Apaches living on the plains have suffered from a lack of a good comprehensive study, even though they played an important role in hindering Spanish expansion in the American Southwest. When the Spanish first encountered the Apaches they were living peacefully on the plains, although they occasionally raided nearby tribes. When the Spanish began settling in the Southwest they changed the dynamics of the region by introducing horses. The Apaches quickly adopted the animals into their culture and used them to dominate their neighbors. Apache power declined in the eighteenth century when their Caddoan enemies acquired guns from the French, and the powerful Comanches gained access to horses and began invading northern Apache territory. Surrounded by enemies, the Apaches increasingly turned to the Spanish for aid and protection rather than trade. The Spanish-Apache peace was fraught with problems. The Spaniards tended to lump all Apaches into one group even though, in reality, each band operated independently. Thus, when one Apache band raided a Spanish outpost, the Spanish considered the peace broken. On the other hand, since Apaches considered each Spanish settlement a distinct "band" they saw nothing wrong in making peace at one Spanish location while continuing to raid another. Eventually the Spanish encouraged other Indians tribes to launch a campaign of unrelenting war against the Apaches. Despite devastating attacks from their enemies, the Apaches were able to survive. When the Mexican Revolution removed the Spanish from the area, the Apaches remained and still occupied portions of the plains as late as the 1870s. Despite the pressures brought to bear upon them the Apaches prevailed, retaining their freedoms longer than almost any other tribe.

In the 1690s, Father Kino described Tucson as a highly suitable place to establish a mission community. Once founded, Mission San Agustin del Tucson became a visit a of the neighboring Mission San Xavier del Bac, which served as the cabecera. After Mexico gained its independence from Spain in 1821, the nearby Pima village of El Pueblito was abandoned, and the mission fell into ruin as the church property was homesteaded, given away, or sold. Physical evidence of the mission, including a convento and gardens, was further compromised after a brick manufacturing plant and, later, a landfill took their toll on the archaeological record. By the middle of the twentieth century, the last evidence of the mission era was destroyed. Mission San Agustin can be interpreted as an example of colonial failure that does not conform to traditional culture contact models of a unilinear sequence from diffusion to acculturation and, ultimately, to assimilation. San Agustin was for a short period a thriving, productive, complex mission community that overshadowed its neighboring cabecera, San Xavier del Bac. Using a historical archaeological approach, this paper describes the cultural context in which Tucson's mission was constructed, abandoned, fell into ruin, and disappeared. Major historical events and processes are suggested as possible causes for this failure.

The Comanche Indians presented a major challenge to the Republic of Texas throughout its nine-year history. The presence of the Comanches greatly slowed the westward advancement of the Texas frontier, just as it had hindered the advancing frontiers of the Spaniards and Mexicans who colonized Texas before the creation of the Republic. The Indian policy of the Republic of Texas was inconsistent. Changes in leadership brought drastic alterations in the policy pursued toward the Comanche nation. The author examines the Indian policy of the Republic, how the Comanches responded to that policy, and the impact of Texan-Comanche relations on both parties.

This study presents a population history of the Huron-Petun, Iroquoian-speaking agriculturalists who occupied south-central Ontario from A.D. 900 to A.D. 1650. Temporal change in the number, size, and residential density of prehistoric and contact village sites of the Huron-Petun are used to delineate population change. It is revealed that Huron-Petun population grew dramatically during the fourteenth century, attaining a maximum size of approximately 30,000 in the middle of the fifteenth century. This growth appears to have been intrinsic (1.2% per annum) and is best explained by colonization of new lands and increased production and consumption of corn. Population stabilized during the fifteenth century primarily because of an increased burden of density-dependent diseases (tuberculosis) arising from life in large nucleated villages. Huron-Petun population remained at 30,000 until A.D. 1634; there is no archaeological evidence for protohistoric epidemics of European origin. The historic depopulation of the Huron-Petun country, resulting from catastrophic first encounters with European diseases between 1634 and 1640, is substantiated by archaeological data.

There is increasing interest in assessing the role of hemodynamics in aneurysm growth and rupture mechanism. The ability to accurately predict the rupture risk of an aneurysm can help in providing immediate intervention to patients with aneurysms at high rupture risk Also, the small but significant risk associated with the treatment options can be avoided for patients with stable harmless aneurysms. Retrospective studies have been performed in the past to identify indices that differentiate ruptured aneurysms from unruptured aneurysms [1–3]. However, these differences may not necessarily translate to differences between aneurysms that present unruptured but over a period of time (months to years), fork towards growth/rupture and unruptured aneurysms that remain stable. In the present study, the hypothesis that hemodynamic indices of unruptured aneurysms when they first presented are predictive of their longitudinal outcome was tested.

Laser Additive Manufacturing (LAM) is one of the greener routes for fabrication of Inconel 718 (IN718) components. In the present work, Taguchi L9 array based optimization is performed using grey relational analysis to optimize the process parameters for the fabrication of thin walled structures using a 2 kW fibre laser based additive manufacturing system. Within the framework of the experimental conditions of the study, the LAM processing parameters, i.e., laser power, scan speed and powder feed rate, are optimized for minimum width and maximum height. The optimized parameters are used for the deposition of multi-layered walls and it is subjected to heat treatment at 1000 °C for duration of one-hour, followed by water quenching. Comprehensive investigations on microstructural and mechanical behaviour using optical microscopy (OM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, micro-hardness and automated ball indentation (ABI) are carried out. Microstructure examinations of LAM deposits of IN718 reveal intermixed dendritic and cellular structures. However, homogenization in microstructure is observed through heat treatment resulting in reduced micro-hardness. It is also observed that there is considerable increase in the crystallite size of the deposits after heat treatment. This study opens a new route for fabrication of thin walled structures using LAM with modified properties by erasing the thermal history through heat treatment.

INTRODUCTION Bedaquiline (BDQ) and linezolid (LZD) are Group A drugs and form part of shorter and longer BDQ-based regimens under India’s National Tuberculosis (TB) Programme. A systematic review including some data from India on acquired BDQ resistance reports 2.2% phenotypic and 4.4% genotypic resistance in patients treated with BDQ-based regimens. The pooled frequency of LZD resistance among drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB) isolates was 4.2% in a different study. The emergence of resistance to BDQ is concerning as it results in difficulties in constructing regimens, and is associated with unsuccessful treatment outcomes among DR-TB patients. Since 2015, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has provided treatment for TB patients in Mumbai with extensive resistance patterns, who need newer drugs and have limited treatment options under India’s National TB Elimination Programme. METHODS We carried out a descriptive retrospective study of routinely collected programmatic data from December 2020 to February 2022. The study population consisted of culture-positive DR-TB patients with BDQ and LZD exposure for over one month, referred to the MSF clinic with 1) suspected or confirmed treatment failure; 2) DR-TB diagnosed household contacts of BDQ-exposed DR-TB patients. ETHICS This research fulfilled the exemption criteria set by the MSF Ethics Review Board (ERB) for a posteriori analyses of routinely collected clinical data, and thus did not require MSF ERB review. RESULTS 88 culture-positive samples were subjected to BDQ and LZD drug susceptibility testing (DST). Of these, 27 showed resistance to BDQ, LZD, or both. 22.7% (20/88) showed BDQ resistance, 17% (15/88) LZD resistance, and eight patients (9%) were simultaneously resistant to BDQ and LZD. Of 88 samples, two were DR-TB diagnosed contacts of BDQ-exposed index cases, and the remaining were BDQ-exposed patients (> one month). In the resistant cohort of 27, equal proportions were male and female, and mean exposure to all Group A drugs was 14 months. 74% (20/27) patients had bilateral disease; 26% (7/27) had unilateral disease, of which 67% (18/27) had lung cavities. Simultaneous resistance to clofazimine and fluoroquinolones was found among 30% (8/27) and 78% (21/27) patients respectively. Within the resistant cohort, two patients refused treatment and 25 started on treatment. Out of 25 patients starting treatment, 8% (2/25) successfully completed treatment, 48% (12/25) died, 20% (5/25) failed, 4% (1/25) were lost to follow-up, and 20% (5/25) were still on treatment at the time of analysis. Of the five patients still on treatment patients, two culture-converted and three are still culture-positive after three months of treatment. CONCLUSION We observed a high proportion of BDQ and LZD resistance in patients who previously failed on BDQ and LZD-based regimens. We observe high mortality and unsuccessful outcomes in treating such cases. Designing effective treatment regimens for patients with retreatment episodes and a history of BDQ and LZD exposure is extremely challenging. We urgently recommend increased programmatic access to DST for LZD and BDQ, to ensure early access to effective regimens. CONFLICTS OF INTEREST None declared

Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate the risk association related to periodontal disease and breast cancer performing a prospective case-matched control study. Methodology: It was a prospective controlled study, performed to evaluate the possible association with Parkinson’s disease (PD) and breast cancer. The Institutional Board for Ethics in Research approved the study (CAAE: 08989019.9.0000.5437). This case–control was designed as a 1:1 propensity study that included 64 volunteers with breast cancer before treatment and 64 women volunteers with no cancer. The cases and matched controls were recruited from the Barretos Cancer Hospital. For matching, cases and controls were matched by age, income of families, education, and smoking status (considered former smoker or current smoker). All of the patients interviewed participated voluntarily and signed an informed consent form. For both groups, women, over 40 years old, have at least 17 teeth, no history of familial breast cancer, no prior cancer, and no history of breast cancer in the family. For the case group, patients with breast cancer diagnosis and who knew about their breast cancer diagnosis were included. For the control group, patients without cancer diagnosis and normal mammographic examination, or if altered, the final finding, showing the absence of neoplasm or risk for breast cancer, were included. For data collection of periodontal parameters, the instrument available in the online version through the website Periodontalchart-online.com/pt developed by the University of Bern, Switzerland, was used. Periodontal indices were measured with the aid of a model periodontal probe from the University of North Carolina. PD indices were considered according to the parameters described by the American Academy of Periodontology Results: A total of 128 research participants were included in the study, in two groups, 64 participants without cancer (control group) and 64 patients with breast cancer (case group). The groups were similar related to age, income, education, and smoking. Evaluating oral health parameters, the groups were different. Case groups were associated with better related to the frequency of tooth brushing per day and daily mouthwash uses but worse oral parameters evaluated by mean plaque index, blending on probing, and periodontal probing depth. PD was significantly associated with BC for all case definitions (p <0.001). In the multivariable analysis, periodontitis was significantly associated with breast cancer in a sample of severe and moderate periodontitis. Women diagnosed with moderate periodontitis have four times higher odds of having breast cancer than women without periodontitis. Women with severe periodontitis have 10 times higher odds of having breast cancer. Conclusion: There is a possible increased risk of breast cancer diagnosis in women with active PD when compared with women without PD. Researchers have developed studies with the referred objective as an alternative to carry out the prevention of pathologies through an important oral health action. New studies need to be carried out to corroborate the findings to formulate public health policies.

Pavement performance is a complex issue which depends on many contributing factors. Examining the performance of real-life pavements across the state determines what the actual service lives are for the pavements. For the purposes of this study, only selected LTPP projects were examined, along with a database containing all the historic repair projects completed in Indiana. Pertinent information present in the Indiana Historic Contracts Database was extracted concerning the types of pavement repair and treatments options commonly employed within the state, the time between repairs, etc. These data were used to determine descriptive statistical parameters and was summarized in graph form. Similarly, data about selected LTPP GPS and SPS sites were downloaded from the online website, LTPP InfoPave and a comparative study between companion sites was performed. These data included study site and pavement-related information, such as construction dates, pavement structure details, maintenance and repair history, and pavement distress surveys. These data were used to draw conclusions about the impact of treatment applications, climatic and geologic factors, traffic volume, and pavement structures on pavement performance. Gaps in knowledge about pavement failure modes, distress data, and effectiveness of treatment applications mentioned in the contracts database file hampered efforts to form a complete picture of the effectiveness of treatment options and their timely (or untimely) application. Similarly, details about pavement mixture design and differentiating factors between companion sites prevented researchers from narrowing down the causes leading to the observed pavement distress.

Cancer stigma may lead to delayed diagnosis and treatment, especially in low- and middle-income countries. This exploratory, pilot study was conducted in India to explore the degree to which cancer stigma is perceived, experienced, and internalized among adults living with cancer and their primary caregivers. We conducted a survey of cancer patients and their caregivers in two Indian cities. The survey assessed perceived, experienced, and internalized stigma; demographic characteristics; patient cancer history; mental health; and social support. A purposive sample of 20 cancer survivor and caregiver dyads was drawn from an ongoing population-based cohort study. Overall, 85 percent of patients and 75 percent of caregivers reported experiencing some level (i.e., yes response to at least one of the items) of perceived, experienced, or internalized stigma. Both patients (85 percent) and caregivers (65 percent) perceived that community members hold at least one stigmatizing belief or attitude toward people with cancer. About 60 percent of patients reported experiencing stigma, and over one-third of patients and caregivers had internalized stigma. The findings indicate that fatalistic beliefs about cancer are prevalent, and basic education about cancer for the general public, patients, and caregivers is required. Cancer-related stigma in India should continue to be studied to determine and address its prevalence, root causes, and influence on achieving physical and mental health-related outcomes.

This case study engages with the journey of SNEHA (Society for Nutrition, Education and Health Action), a public health non-profit organization founded in Mumbai in 1999. India has the distinction of being witness to a long history of efforts by public-spirited healthcare professionals. Alongside treatment, their work in public health has consistently involved giving due emphasis to prevention, reducing the excessive reliance on institutional-led public health delivery, moving towards community-based approaches and giving considerable attention to maternal and child health, the bedrock of any sound public health system. The efforts of SNEHA (which means “love” or “affection”) in developing, expanding and adapting this approach amongst some of the world’s largest and dense poor and low-income urban settlements in India constitutes an important part of this history. Started with little funding, in a little over two decades, it now oversees over Rs. 29 crores of funds; and its programs, which started as small pilot projects to gather evidence, have evolved into large interventions drawing in many individuals and institutions along the way. Public health, unlike many other spaces of developmental interventions, demands balancing affordability, quality care and credibility with little margin for error. The case engages with the ways in which intentional evolutions to its practice have allowed SNEHA to grow, in full public glare, in a rapidly urbanizing agglomeration. The case also offers an opportunity for learners to reflect on how SNEHA’s organizational culture of appreciative inquiry and its adoption of technology have enabled it to hold together a team of 500 staff and over 6,000 volunteers; and how community-based models can overcome the shortage of full-time medical professionals in a resource-constrained to deliver consistently high standards of care.
