Relations of two types of trust by entrepreneurs with the entrepreneurs' preference to remain an incubator tenant were examined using questionnaire data from 67 owners of companies in 6 Turkish incubators. As hypothesized, trust in incubator management had a positive and unique relation with preference to remain an incubator tenant. However, trust in other incubator tenants did not show the hypothesized positive and unique relation with preference to remain a tenant; the results indicated the relation is negative.

An incubator houses a number of new, small businesses that share space and administrative support. Management assistance is usually available and financial assistance is sometimes provided. Incubator managers can aid tenants also by encouraging and assisting them in their planning efforts. However, this study found a wide variance among incubators regarding the amount of planning by tenant firms. Further, the amount of planning by tenants appears to be a function of the amount of planning that is required or encouraged by incubator managers. The major implication is that planning can be affected by incubator managers. Thus, incubator managers should see part of their role as a planning facilitator. Additional areas for future research are suggested.

Abstract. Technology-based startup plays a vital role in improving the Indonesian economy. There are thousands of units of technology-based startups, though most of them are not adequately sustainable. The inadequacy is attributed to the fact that the products or services created are not in line with market needs and do not help understand business processes. Universities play an essential role in developing startups through business incubators to compete in the digital age. There is no conducive learning environment for business incubators in Indonesia, though the national standards are used. This research evaluates the learning process in a Technology Business Incubator in Bandung University using case study methods. Data is collected by performing in-depth interviews with three incubator managers and seven startup founders or tenants who have completed the incubation process. The business industry consists of education, design, printing, and fishery, while thehe interviews cover the process before, during, and after incubation, including the tenant's selection criteria and stages, learning processes in incubators and facilities, after graduation programs, and measurement of the impacts. The results show that the practices fit the ideal conditions, including training-focused and knowledge sharing session programs or skills, knowledge provisions, and expertise improvement programs for tenants, rental system facilities for graduates, and commercialization support. Furthermore, there are opportunities to improve several aspects, including developing tenant admission selection criteria, effective learning approaches, coaching, networking, and broader funding, graduation criteria, monitoring for graduates, and a more comprehensive range of impact measurement. This research helps guide business incubators to prioritize developing aspects of services. Moreover, evaluation using the mixed method is open for further investigation. Business incubators have a very important role in developing entrepreneurship, since it gives large opportunity to its participants to develop their business skill during incubation. The Indonesian government today provides a major boost to the development of business incubators in universities or other form of higher education institutions. The purpose of this research is to analyze the validation of the establishment of business incubator in colleges. In Ministerial Regulation (Permen) Minister of Cooperation and Small Medium Entrepreneurship the Republic of Indonesia No. 24/2015 explained that the head of the university, the Rector or the Director may issue a business incubators license. Thus, internal validation can be done by university or college management through the issuance of Decree (SK) Establishment complete with personnel appointed as manager. Furthermore, the college, has to provide a place or room consisting of office space, tenant room at least 3, discussion room 1, and tenant production display room. External validation is carried out by tenants through their success of becoming independent businessmen after being forged or incubated in a business incubator for a maximum of 3 years in one incubation period.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to provide insights on the relational dimension of a networked business incubator (NBI), by investigating the intermediary role of incubator management in fostering social and business ties linking tenants among each other, with the incubator management and external actors. Design/methodology/approach The paper offers a literature review on the NBIs and advances a comprehensive analytical framework of the networked incubation model. This framework is empirically illustrated through a case study research on a leading Italian private NBI, namely, H-Farm. The collection of primary data was conducted by means of face-to-face in-depth interviews and a survey. Data were processed through social network analysis (SNA) tools. Findings The results highlight the co-presence and interaction of social and business ties, which build up a vital environment nurturing an entrepreneurial ecosystem. Community-based relationships and the intermediation of incubator management are crucial for supporting tenants in product and business development activities. Research limitations/implications These results pave the way to further research, oriented to the conceptualization of a NBI as a (small) cluster. Moreover, the application of the SNA tools adopted invites further research on networked incubators, applying the same methodology in new directions. Originality/value This paper adds to previous literature on NBIs by providing evidence of the intermediary role of incubator management in promoting and facilitating social and business relationships occurring among tenants, between tenants and the incubator management, as well as with external advisors, clients and suppliers.

Currently creative industry in Indonesia is being develops as primary sector in economic development due to its capability to increase the value added of local resources, providing employment, and promoting tourism on the basis of sustainable development principles. Several techno park currently have been being developed by the government in various locations and various sector of economy as the focus of development. Sragen Tecno Park located in Central Java is one of Techno Park which focus on creative industry development trough business incubator model. In 2016 the program was followed by 10 (ten) new entrepreneurs as Tenants. By applying business incubator approach the Tenants were treated through the process beginning from selection, entrepreneurship training, managerial training, technical training, design and creativity training, as well as assistance, consulting, and advocating for marketing activities. Using the participatory action research, this qualitative study finds that business incubator model could improve creative industry values covering entrepreneurship values and art values of the Tenants, beside, supply chain and value chain of creative industry could be developed by the Tenant as well. This resulted in the improvement of business performance of the Tenant. Diffusion of innovation of creative industry values on the tenants trough business incubator model has indicated its effectiveness as an approach to develop Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), so that it has implication for policies of developing SMEs in other local resource based economic sector.

AbstractThis study investigates the extent to which tenants in a jewellery incubator in the Limpopo Province of South Africa network. Since 1994 SEDA has set up more than 31 incubation centres in furniture making, construction, chemicals, jewellery, ICT, metal fabrication, agriculture and small scale mining. This study was done through a survey conducted on tenants in the SEDA Limpopo Jewellery Incubator (SLJI). Information was obtained through a structured questionnaire. The study revealed how tenants benefit from networking around exhibitions and collective purchasing of raw material. Through the Incubator institutional mechanisms, the study explains how tenants share expertise, experiences, technology and resources. Unfortunately the tenants do not initiate the own networking programmes. They lose out on benefits associated with collective effort in other areas such as advertisements, lobbying the government for industrial stands, organising an newsletter, hiring of consultants, and organising joint training programmes. Lastly the study identified opportunities that the tenants could collectively exploit in order strengthen and sustain their businesses.

Background: Environmental problems are a worrying phenomenon, and there is a call for action. One way to face these problems lies in sustainable entrepreneurship. There is an increase in sustainability-oriented incubators supporting these sustainable entrepreneurs on their entrepreneurial journey, using various support systems. However, there is little research available about the support systems sustainability-oriented incubators offer, the importance of these support systems, and the influence of entrepreneurial stages. Purpose: With our study, we provide sustainability-oriented incubator managers with insights into the importance of different support systems, the frequency in which they are offered and the role of different entrepreneurial stages. This allows sustainability-oriented incubators to support their tenants better and, therefore, positively influence sustainable entrepreneurship.  Method: A single case study method has been applied by using a mixed-method approach of qualitative semi-structured interviews and a quantitative questionnaire which was filled in prior to the interviews by the participants. In total, nine participants were interviewed, consisting of seven incubator tenants and two incubator managers. Conclusion: This research has found a high level of importance and frequency of business model support and market research support, irrespective of the different entrepreneurial stages. This implies a constant reiteration process from sustainable entrepreneurs, demanding a strong-intervention role from the sustainability-oriented incubator. Furthermore, this research has found the shortcomings in using the effectuation model for analysing entrepreneurial stages and suggests a different application.

In order to determine the effects of social capital in innovative contexts, Nahapiet and Ghoshal&rsquo
s (1998) three dimensions of social capital (structural, relational and cognitive) were investigated in a business incubator located in a university science park. This thesis tries to answer five questions for the incubator context: (1) What are the antecedents of the three dimensions of social capital? (2) What are the benefits of social capital for the tenant firms? (3) How are the dimensions of social capital related to the antecedents and benefits? (4) What are the effects of being located in a university on social capital development between the firms and the host university? and (5) What is the role of the incubator management/specialists on social capital creation? The research questions were investigated in two layers: (1) Social capital development among tenant firms, and (2) Social capital development between the tenant firms and the host university. The research was designed with a multi-method approach along four steps. In the first step, the selected incubator was observed for a day. In the second stage, a pilot interview was conducted with one of the tenant firms. Next the firms were asked to complete a questionnaire regarding their demographic characteristics. In the last stage, a theoretical sample of nine selected firms&rsquo
owners were interviewed. All the collected data were analyzed following the grounded theory approach (Strauss and Corbin, 1990) and seven propositions were developed to be investigated in further research.

The development of innovation is very important for economic and social growth of the National State (Hyytinen & Toivanen, 2005; Schumpeter, 1942). However, the development of innovation is an expensive and risky process, since your return is not guaranteed (Corder & Salles-Filho, 2006; Hall, 2002). Thereby obtaining financing for innovation may be hampered by traditional financial agents. On the other hand, since the goal of the state is to promote actions in the public interest for promoting economic and social development (Muller, 2003), it is justifiable for the government promotes public policies to induce transformation of the economy through innovation, implementing actions to minimize their difficulties, especially those already mentioned. However, the resources provided by the government are scarce and, therefore, are benefiting only a portion of innovative projects. So there is a more efficient allocation of resources, managers of public resources agencies need to analyze the characteristics of the innovative project, the company and the entrepreneur, to identify those most likely to succeed. Among the many features that can be addressed, this research aims to analyze: (i) Entrepreneur background; (ii) Maturity Stage of Innovative Product; and (iii) Company Relational Capital. Therefore, this study is meant to examine relationships between characteristics of the enterprise and the granting of public funding for innovation. Specifically, the survey was conducted only among incubated technology-based companies of the State of São Paulo and addressed granting of resources by the major public agencies active state, which are: Financier of Studies and Projects (FINEP), National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq), Support Foundation of São Paulo Research (FAPESP), e Brazilian Service of Support for Micro and Small Enterprises (SEBRAE) (SDECTI, 2013). In terms of methodology, this study frames as (i) correlational study, since you intend to show a certain relationship between independent and dependent variables; and (ii) quantitative, since cases down and classifies the relationship between variables by means of using statistical tools (Logistic Regression). The collection technique used was a survey, using questionnaires sent by email and answered by a sample of 95 companies. The main result has been that academic training, the entrepreneurial background of the component, has a positive relationship with the granting of public funds. The main contribution of this study to the consolidation of academic literature on funding for innovation is the application of micro and small businesses, since previous studies emphasize, mostly medium and large mature firms.

The objective of this study is to confer the factors which affect the satisfaction of tenants in incubators. Through reviewing related references, we came up with three hypotheses: 1.The effect between resource degree of the hardware and the performance in tenants. 2.The effect between support degree of the software and the performance in tenants. 3.The relationship between satisfaction and the performance in tenants. The study collects empirical data from tenants in incubators. We delivered 180 questionnaires, and received 49 questionnaires. The effective sample response rate is 27.22 %. The study applies for Pearson correlation analysis, regression analysis. Results of statistical analyses provided three important conclusions as follows: 1.There are significant correlations between resource degree of the hardware and the performance in tenants. The higher degree of the hardware incubators provides, the better performance tenants show. 2.There are significant correlations between support degree of the software and the performance in tenants. The higher degree of the software incubators provides, the better performance tenants show. 3.The performance in tenants is positively related to satisfaction.

As the change both of industrial and business environment become rapid, all the enterprises have to face the pressure to readjust their business focus. Enterprises have to reexamine their cores of business model from double “E” (efficiency and effectiveness) to double “S” (scale and scope). For this, they begin to realize that only continuous innovation can help them through the keen competitions. Though innovation can bring firms with improvement in production, exploration of new markets and competitive advantages, it is not easy to obtain. Nevertheless, the core of Taiwan’s technology industry mainly comprises of small and medium enterprises, and these enterprises generally lack resources and know-how, especially in the area of research and development (R&D). This constraint limits the development of new technology and prevents s the overall integration of the industry. As a result, the pubic sector should provide guidance to these enterprises so they can improve their chance of success. Incubators are set to help start-ups to get resource that is needed to run a new business, including places, equipment, and technical and commercial supports, which can lower the risks and the costs to start a new business. It is rarely important for start-ups to accumulate their core resources. But owning to the products or the technology the start-ups trying to develop are in different life cycle, the types of the resources the start-up need can be different. Our study finds: there are no significant correlation between firm’s core resource conformations and incubators or firm’s attribute. That is to say, incubator tenants choosing an incubator not consider how the incubator can provide. We examine core resource conformations, cross-functional integrative, integrate with incubators, and environment uncertainty finds: the four factors have obvious relationship with new product development performance.

This study attempts to investigate the factors affecting the performance of Taiwan’s tenants in incubation over the 2007-2011 period by utilizing an unbalanced panel data regression involving tenants’ inputs and outputs. The empirical findings show that systematic impacts exist in different industry sectors, in different professional fields, and in different types of incubators. Therefore, the findings provide some possible suggestions to effectively elevate the performance of tenants: 1. Tenants should sign contracts with university-based incubators with longer terms. 2. Tenants in Northern Taiwan should avoid knowledge overlap effects with the university-based incubators. 3. Tenants should be aware of the structural inflexibility of the parent company in manufacturing. 4. Tenants in manufacturing and electrical machinery should avoid the interdisciplinary. 5. In the service sector, tenants owners whose are more advanced in age or highly educated performed better in incubation. 6. In the electrical machinery field, tenants should extend the length of the duration of stay. These are helpful suggestions for elevating the performance of tenants in incubation.

This chapter focuses on the role played by business incubators in developing and facilitating knowledge transfer, networks, and business support to tenant firms through a sustainable ecosystem. The authors conduct an in-depth qualitative case-study of one tech-based business incubator in Portugal—IPN, created in 1991 by the University of Coimbra—to provide insight on how the incubator's direction/management board and a group of incubatees perceive incubation and its impact. Primary data was collected via participant observation/focus group involving the incubators' CEO and six team members. Semi-structured interviews were carried out among the CEOs and top managers from 11 companies supported by IPN whether as (1) incubates, (2) under acceleration, and (3) graduates. Results show a positive impact of incubation on internationalization and growth for incubatees and companies under acceleration. However, there is a need for new post-incubation follow-up mechanisms and a normative context promoting richer interactions with graduates.

The correct management of academic science parks is strategic for universities, as well as has synergistic effect for companies there in installed. Park managers choose who the tenants for the parks are, but also they take other strategic decisions relative to: (a) academic spin-offs creation, (b) investment in technology-based companies, o (c) consolidation the start-ups that have finished their incubation period. Managers have tools to increase quality decisions and reduce the level of risk associated. However, the park' nature and characteristics are unique, thus tools must be flexible, and able to adapt to the changing reality of the companies, park and environment. Based on the previous ideas, the present chapter proposes to design and test a management tool for science parks based on organizations and entrepreneur's characteristics. Results obtained show that the tool is very useful, due that its simplicity, flexibility and adaptability for be used in any Science Park.
