Purpose The purpose of this paper is to identify how the relationship between inbound logistics (IL) activities and elements of resilience (EoR) can contribute to organisational resilience. Design/methodology/approach Two in-depth case-based studies were conducted in the dairy industry. After identifying EoR and IL activities through a systematic literature review, relationships among them have been empirically discussed in six groups (emerged content analysis results): supplier and response capability; transportation; security; quick response to disruption; logistics management; trust and knowledge. Findings A framework was developed describing the contribution of these six groups to organisational resilience by highlighting and discussing three aspects: rigidity of the hierarchy, type of relationship and geographical dispersion. These aspects emerged from the process of content analysis and are related to the companies’ characteristics. Practical implications The proposed framework can assist managers to decide which group of EoR and IL activities they should prioritise, depending on the company’s characteristics and needs. Originality/value Although some studies have discussed the IL contribution to generating resilience in companies, none of them have explored in detail the relationship between EoR and IL activities, and their contribution to organisational resilience. The proposed framework shows the contribution of the EoR to three different organisational aspects.

The concept of green supply chains is now accepted in many corporate organizations in Asia. Since the early nineties, when industry became aware of the increasing relevance of sustainable development, many business enterprises in Asia have adopted environmental initiatives as an integral part of their business practices. In time these organizations came to realize that the environmental initiatives needed to encompass not only the organization's own business practices but also the entire stretch of operations across the supply chain. In other words, they felt the need to include the employees, suppliers, customers, waste handlers, and other business partners in the greening process (Bacallan, 2000). Thus, an integrated supply chain approach was called for. Such an approach should be able to identify the environmental aspects at every stage, assess the environmental impacts associated with these aspects, prioritize them, and design action plans to mitigate their adverse effects on the environment if any. An integrated green supply chain approach would take into consideration the inbound logistics phase of the supply chain, the production or internal supply chain, the outbound logistics phase, and the reverse logistics phase (Rao & Holt, 2005; Sarkis, 1999; Seuring & Muller, 2007). For many organizations in Asia, the green supply chain approach has also emerged as a way to demonstrate their commitment to sustainability (Seuring et al., 2008). However, there is a continuous need to measure and monitor the extent to which environmental performance is actually achieved. To assess this performance, a system of indicators across the supply chain is proposed, which is computationally easy to implement at the industry level. To demonstrate that the system of environmental indicators does measure performance, an empirical approach is adopted to test whether the system correlates with the four constructs of environmental sustainability: resource conservation, energy efficiency, reduction of hazardous waste, and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions (Vachon & Mao, 2008). In order to check these linkages of environmental indicators to the constituents of environmental performance, four multiple regression models were run. In the first model, the dependent variable was resource conservation, the independent predictor variables being the 20 environmental indicators grouped under the four constructs: Inbound logistics, production or internal logistics, outbound logistics, and reverse logistics. In the second, third, and fourth models, the dependent variables were energy efficiency, reduction of hazardous waste, and minimization of emission of greenhouse gases, respectively. Upon running the regression models, the models for resource conservation, reduction of hazardous waste, and reduction of emission of greenhouse gases were found to be significant at 5 percent significance level while the model for energy efficiency was significant at 10 percent level.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to employ an inductive approach to explore how small, nascent, firms in the craft brewing industry use cooperative behaviours with direct competitors to achieve their goals. Design/methodology/approach Data were gathered from interviews with the founders of seven small, newly established, craft brewers in a Midwestern city in the USA for this exploratory study. Data analysis followed the general tenants of inductive coding. Porter’s value chain model was used as a framework to organise and conceptualise the coopetitive behaviour uncovered. Findings The firms engage in cooperative behaviours with their direct competitors in areas such as process technology development, procurement, inbound logistics and marketing. A particularly interesting and common collaborative activity was breweries recommending/promoting competing breweries to their own customers. Practical implications This study provides clear examples of how relationship building with competitors could be advantageous and help small, nascent firms overcome the liabilities of newness and smallness. Originality/value Research on coopetition has called for a greater understanding of the nature of cooperative behaviours in small firms, start-ups and firms outside of high-technology industries. Moreover, research has called for finer-grained approaches to conceptualising coopetition. This paper fills these gaps and shows how Porter’s value chain is a useful tool for organising the types of collaborative behaviours that can be part of coopetition. The findings enhance understanding and facilitate future research by illustrating a broad array of cooperative activities that occur between direct competitors.

The cruise market has developed rapidly in recent years. The opulence of the cruise market has also augmented the demand for the cruise construction industry. Cruise ship construction is a huge and intricate heavy industry that can cause serious environmental problems. Therefore, optimal use of advanced logistics systems, to meet the demands at the lowest possible cost and unnecessary waste, has become a key issue. This paper developed two typical inbound logistics system modes based on JIT (Just In Time)-logistics policy and formulated two single-objective nonlinear models to simultaneously determine the ordering strategy under the inbound logistics system and the optimal selection strategy of two typical inbound logistics modes. Numerical experiments depicted the variations of optimal inbound logistics mode over three different kinds of cruise parts. These two models could provide insights in making inbound logistics decisions, and serve as a reference in the mass customization logistics service for cruise ship construction to control costs, which is helpful for promoting the sustainability of the cruise market.

The increasing growth of automotive industry in Indonesia has not been matched by the number of local suppliers and makes the automotive industry too dependent on imported raw materials. Along with the needs of import activities, it is also required a greater logistics activities. However, with high logistics costs, the manufacturer must increase efficiency to be able to compete in the global market. This can be accomplished by planning inbound logistics activities that control the movement of materials from suppliers to the manufacture. In this research, an optimization methodology, based on Mixed Integer Nonlinear Programming (MINLP) approach is developed and solved with branch and bound algorithm. The result of this research, which obtained the total cost of optimal inbound logistics include material cost, transportation cost, and administration cost. This model can also be used as a tool for the company in making decisions about the type and the number of container also with the total of the optimal material load in each container, therefore the optimal container space utilization value can be obtained.

Purpose – Information systems (IS) play a substantial role in managing reverse logistics (RL) processes. However, the RL literature rarely takes a holistic approach to examining the “success” of IS employment. Drawing on the rich literature base from the IS field, the authors explore IS Success theory in the context of RL. Considering Diffusion of Innovation theory, the authors also examine the effect of motivation on IS utilization. In doing so, the authors provide scholars and practitioners with insight into the factors affecting the success of a RL IS. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach – Based upon DeLone and McLean's IS Success theory, the authors develop the model to consider information quality, IS utilization, and RL cost effectiveness (as a proxy for net benefits). The authors disaggregate RL into two processes and thus consider the model from two perspectives: the process of receiving returns from customers (inbound) and the process of returning products to suppliers (outbound). The authors survey 136 RL professionals and employ partial least squares modeling for data analysis. Findings – For both inbound and outbound path models, information quality is significantly and positively related to IS utilization; in turn, IS utilization is a significant predictor of net benefits. For inbound, RL goals provide significant motivation to drive IS utilization. For outbound, RL challenges provide significant motivation for IS utilization. Originality/value – The authors bring IS Success theory into the context of RL. Additionally, by investigating the topic from both inbound and outbound perspectives, the findings suggest differences between inbound and outbound RL processes.

The paper describes the terms Industry 4.0 and Logistics 4.0 as two of the most important trends in production and logistics. Industrie 4.0 (Industry 4.0) is a German term and a synonym for the fourth industrial revolution. It is connected with the common trend of digitalization, virtualization and networking of data and information. The term Logistics 4.0 brands the specific application of Industry 4.0 in the area of logistics. Therefore a new research approach was developed the “Smart Logistics Zone” (SLZ) by Fraunhofer IFF and Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg. This is defined as a scalable examination and action area for the analysis, evaluation, planning, control, regulation and (re-) configuration of logistics solutions [1]. The Smart Logistics Zone differs into logistics objects, logistics processes, logistical systems and logistics infrastructure. Every logistics solution should be built by using all of these four aspects in a free combination by increasing dynamics and complexity. Industry 4.0 and Logistics 4.0 create new business processes. The question is, how will they change the traditional logistics concepts and strategies? The paper answers the following research questions: What are solutions of Logistics 4.0? Are there any successful realized solutions, which optimize logistics at a whole? Which requirements on logistics management will exist according to the criteria of Industry 4.0/Logistics 4.0? Are the classic logistics strategies still valid according to the digital transformation process?

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore the perception of Indian logistics managers and employees engaged on the steel sector having knowledge and exposure on the logistics network and logistics cost in Indian steel sector using descriptive analysis. Design/methodology/approach – To address the research questions, a survey-based empirical study was carried out in a representative sample of 226 from different levels like managers, senior managers, presidents and vice presidents and general managers at the operational levels at reputed steel industries having annual turnover of 250,000 dollars. All 226 responses received and analyzed descriptively and the results presented. Findings – The result showed that 83 percent of the respondents perceived the importance of network mapping and the elements of logistics cost with reference to the total overall logistics cost on the context of Indian steel industry. At the same time, poor infrastructure and port inefficiency were the main barriers for increasing the logistics cost as perceived by the respondents. Research limitations/implications – The sample is restricted to the logistics networking and the elements of logistics cost in Indian steel industry only. So caution needs to be exercised in generalizing the results Practical implications – In order to achieve the cost level at other developed and developing nations, the government of India should give focus on infrastructure development, improvising the exiting road condition and sea port development so that bigger size vessels can call to Indian ports for direct delivery of goods without any transshipment. Further, government of Indian needs to promote the multi modal logistics providers for timely evacuation of material as per the demand of industry requirements. Social implications – In India, it is visualized that logistics company have an advantage of cheap availability of labor but on the other side have to manage high cost of logistics. Typically, the total cost on inbound logistics taken into consideration which is around 16-18 percent of the turnover whereas, the world average is around 7-8 percent. According to the data published by JTB Tourism Research & Consulting Co., for the period beginning 1990 until 2019, the growth rate of inbound tourism in Japan has shown a steady increase which resulted in an average of 11.5% every year. This encouraging development was the result of the full-fledged ‘‘Inbound Tourism Initiative’’ campaign launched in 2003, which originally aimed at attracting 10 million foreign tourists to Japan in 2010. However, it is undeniable that there were so many challenges Japan had to overcome alongside that process due to problems that arise out of things beyond control such as natural disasters and epidemics. This article discusses in detail the volatile situation plaguing the inbound tourism industry in Japan. Analyzing from one single perspective that is why people would or would not travel to Japan, this paper seeks to observe how Japan managed to realize the inbound tourism rebound after disasters and epidemics. By employing secondary data analysis, this effort aims to present data about the determinants and factors influencing inbound tourism to Japan from as many countries as possible. This work will then examine in depth the challenges and opportunities that Japan might need to deal with in addressing the impact of COVID-19 on inbound tourism by taking Malaysia as a case study.

The healthcare industry is in full swing. Pressure on the industry increases as a result of social, economic and financial developments. An aging population, increase in care demand, high costs and higher demands on customer value are significant aspects in this. One of the ways of dealing with this, in the Netherlands as well as in Poland, is to organize healthcare processes more efficiently in combination with a more empathetic focus on the customer. Healthcare Logistics stands for an integral approach of the design of healthcare processes, in order to make a contribution to the optimizing of customer value, cost control and savings in the healthcare. Lean and process management focus mainly on designing healthcare processes as efficient as possible where appointments with the customer of those processes are the principle. The logistic contribution counts mainly for tuning the required and available capacity. For the development and putting into practice of integral and customer oriented process management there are several models and tools available, which are deployed in conjunction with each other. Hence the article is focused on integral process oriented approach of healthcare logistics.

Construction industry activities, from material extraction to the end of the structure life, affect the environment negatively. For a sustainable construction process, economically, environmentally, and socially friendly practices are essential, and reverse logistics is one solution that can provide such an approach. In reverse logistics, obsolete products are reused in a new production, while reducing negative effects to the environment. In this study, we assess the current state of research on reverse logistics practices in the construction industry. The study presents a comparative data mining analysis, followed by a content analysis. The results show that the construction industry literature ignores the impact of reverse logistics practices on upstream construction activities. We argue that industry practitioners must take reverse logistics decisions in the early phases of the construction process by considering both upstream and end-of-life construction activities, and we recommend a reverse logistics decision framework for successful reverse logistics implementation. The findings of this research are significant for decision-makers in the industry. We urge that sustainable practices be employed in the industry. Furthermore, a quantitative analysis is suggested to strengthen the arguments made in this article.

According to the analysis, the overall efficiency in logistics service industry in China is comparatively low and there is a remarkable feature in its regional distribution. The efficiency in eastern regions is comparatively higher with the western regions following it and that in central regions is the worst. There exists larger input redundancy in the process of developing the logistics service industry. Thus, regional coordination of the logistics service industry should be emphasized and basic infrastructure investment should also be strengthened. Personnel quality should be improved and meanwhile redundancy should be reduced. Marketization degree of logistics service industry should be improved and capital-intensive industry of logistics service industry should be upgraded.

This study focuses on the inbound logistics of the sugarcane industry, which has three main procedures consisting of cultivation, harvest and transportation. Generally, small-scale growers cannot manage all of the procedures effectively, because of their lack of bargaining power and inadequate equipment. For this reason a resource-sharing policy, such as harvester and truck sharing, is used by factories to reduce the cost of the sugarcane harvest, and increase harvester and truck utilization. To solve the generalized assignment problem (GAP) with time window, thus minimizing the total cost from the assignment of the third-party logistics providers to service small-scale growers under capacity and time limitations, a mathematical model has been developed for small-sized problems. For large-scale problems, particle swarm optimization (PSO) is applied and improved by the hybridization of PSO with k-cyclic moves algorithm (PSOK). The results demonstrate that the proposed metaheuristics can solve the problem efficiently since the results are equal to, or close to, the optimal solutions in which the averaged performances of PSO and PSOK are 99.61% and 99.64%, respectively and the averaged relative improvement is 0.1519%.

Purpose – In manufacturing industries, the levels of inventories at all stages (i.e. raw material, work-in-process and finished goods inventories) indicate the firm's competitive positioning, strategies, internal processes and relationships with suppliers and downstream customers. The authors identify patterns of manufacturing industries based on levels of raw material and finished goods inventories to classify inbound and outbound supply chain strategies. Design/methodology/approach – The authors review literature on supply chain inventory strategy and perform cluster analysis to analyze patterns of manufacturing industries based on manufacturing industry data collected from US Census of Bureau. Following Porter's Five Forces Model, the authors perform in-depth case studies of four representative industries to analyze factors driving supply chain strategies, including industry intensity of rivalry, threat of new entrants, threat of substitutes, bargaining power of suppliers, and bargaining power of buyers. Findings – This study identifies three streams of research on supply chain strategy: Fisher's model and its variations, lean and agile paradigms, and push/pull systems. It finds that whether an industry shows low or high raw materials or finished goods inventories depending on its products, processes, and the dynamics of all forces described in the Five Forces Model. Research limitations/implications – This study is not able to include supplier selection, production strategies, warehousing and distribution, and even product design into the analysis of supply chain strategy due to data limitation. This study classifies industries based on average inventory levels of raw materials and finished goods, while inventory levels and supply chain strategies for specific firms may vary significantly within each industry. Originality/value – This study contributes to the supply chain management literature by providing a parsimonious framework of mapping inbound and outbound supply chain inventory strategies, and the results based on the analyses of all US manufacturing industries provide a baseline picture for supply chain management professionals with manufacturing firms.

The adoption of Industry 4.0 technologies has become particularly important nowadays for companies in order to optimize their production processes and organizational structures. However, companies sometimes find it difficult to develop a strategic plan that innovates their current business model and develops an Industry 4.0 vision. To overcome the growing uncertainty and dissatisfaction in implementing Industry 4.0, new methods and tools that specifically address dedicated companies’ areas, such as logistics, supply chain management, and manufacturing processes, were developed to provide guidance and support to align companies’ business strategies and operations. In particular, this paper develops and presents the application of a maturity model for Logistics 4.0, focusing on the specific applications of Industry 4.0 in the area of logistics. To do so, extant maturity models, linked to the context of Industry 4.0 implementation in logistics processes, were examined in the main scientific research. Afterward, two companies have been investigated through a survey, built around three fundamental macro-aspects, named (i) the propensity of the company towards Industry 4.0 and Logistics 4.0, (ii) the current use of technologies in the logistics process, and (iii) the investments’ level towards Industry 4.0 technologies for a Logistics 4.0 transition. By doing so, a maturity model for Logistics 4.0 emerged as the main result of our research, able to identify the level of maturity of companies in implementing the Industry 4.0 technologies in their logistics processes. Moreover, the model highlighted the strengths and weaknesses of the two investigated companies with respect to the transition towards Logistics 4.0. The article considers the research of the process of supply of resources for construction taking into account the logistical needs of reversible logistics. The result will be the gradual formation of logistics systems in the construction industry, which should lead to the formation of a single logistics system of the construction industry. This will create a set of integration effects. First of all, to identify the main objectives of the logistics system in the construction industry as a whole, it is necessary to determine the basic economic parameters of each system participant, decompose the logistics system, and then determine the integrated economic characteristics of its activities. It is noted that the current level of logistics development and the growing specialization of its individual functional areas require a focus on the whole chain of causal relationships. Most logistics systems are focused on one direction of movement of inventory - from producer to end consumer. As a result, the process of decomposition of the logistics system of the construction industry according to the main economic parameters of operation was created. The current trends in logistics development that emerged during the pandemic have been identified. The general and basic concepts of waste management of construction companies are considered. The scheme of the waste management hierarchy is given. It is established that the main principles of economic regulation in the construction industry of waste management are to reduce the amount of waste and involve them in economic turnover; payment for waste disposal; economic incentives in the field of waste management. The main problems of reverse logistics facing the business and the possibility of solving them through the introduction of a system of reverse logistics or recycling are identified. In conclusion, the introduction of integrated logistics systems was proposed, which is especially effective in large construction projects located in urban centers, where massive material flows must be managed.

Therefore, the current study also investigates the mediating role of manufacturing flexibility for the relationship of logistics processes and customer service. The paper applies the logistics models developed by Bowesox (1974), Green et al.(2008), and Tracey (1998) to furniture industry. Idea: The core idea of the paper is to measure the effects of logistics process on customer service and the performance of furniture manufacturing firms. The study takes the logistics process as an independent variable, the customer service as the first dependent variable and manufacturing performance as a moderating variable. Data: Primary data on logistics, customer service, manufacturing flexibility and firm performance were conveniently collected through a questionnaire from owners/managers of 61 furniture manufacturing firms. Tool: Descriptive statistics, correlation and regression analyses were run to draw the results. Findings: Logistics processes positively affect customer service and firm performance. Customer service also exerts a positive effect on firm performance while the moderating role of manufacturing flexibility was not supported for the relationship of logistics processes and customer service. Contribution: Through efficiency in logistics processes, furniture manufacturing firms can serve customers in a superior way to ultimately achieve improved firm performance. The framework being restricted to efficiency of logistics processes only constitutes an important limitation of the study.
