Notocupes is a speciose genus of Mesozoic Archostemata, currently including 69 species. Due to its distinct morphological heterogeneity and polyphyly it is advised to split Notocupes into four genera based on full body imprints: Notocupes Ponomarenko, 1964, Rhabdocupes Ponomarenko, 1966, Conexicoxa Lin, 1986, stat. resurr. and Brachilatus Strelnikova et Yan, gen. n. The genus Zygadenia Handlirsch, 1906 is proposed for isolated elytra, morphologically similar to those of four aforementioned genera. Notocupes patulus is transferred to Odontomma Ren et al., 2006 as O. patula (Ponomarenko, 1985), comb. n. Individual characters, such as body cuticular tuberculation are discussed in detail as a promising diagnostic feature to separate genera and possibly also species. The expanded diagnoses for five genera and keys to species of these genera are given. New combinations are proposed for thirty-seven species.

Since Sacks’ pioneering work in the 1970s, storytelling has become a favourite topic of research within conversation analysis. Scholars have examined storytelling from the point of view of sequential organization (Jefferson 1978), participation organization (Goodwin 1984), story co-telling (Duranti 1986, Mandelbaum 1987, Lerner 1992), displays of epistemic statuses (Schegloff 1988), and action formation (M. Goodwin 1982, 1990; Mandelbaum 1993; Beach 2000; Beach & Glenn 2011; Wu 2011, 2012). Work has also been done on the management of storytelling in the context of other, concurrent activities (Goodwin 1984, Goodwin & Goodwin 1992, Mandelbaum 2010, Haddington et al. 2014). The aim of this paper is to apply the many insights that researchers have accumulated since Sacks to the analysis and understanding of a single instance of storytelling in a Cantonese conversation. A detailed, step-by-step unpacking of this story will reveal how the contingencies of an interaction, including the interplay of multiple contexts, may leave fine-grained imprints on the shape and character of a story.

Annotation:
The notion of the perinatal „hormonal imprinting” has been published at first in 1980 and since that time it spred expansively. The imprintig develops at the first encounter between the developing receptor and the target hormone – possibly by the alteration of the methylation pattern of DNA – and it is transmitted to the progeny generations of the cell. This is needed for the complete development of the receptor’s binding capacity. However, molecules similar to the target hormone (hormone-analogues, drugs, chemicals, environmental pollutants) can also bind to the developing receptor, causing faulty imprinting with life-long consequences. This can promote pathological conditions. Later it was cleared that in other critical periods such as puberty, imprinting also can be provoked, even in any age in differentiating cells. The central nervous system (brain) also can be mistakenly imprinted, which durably influences the dopaminergic, serotonergic and noradrenergic system and this can be manifested – in animal experiments – in alterations of the sexual and social behavior. In our modern age the faulty hormonal imprintig is inavoidable because of the mass of medicaments, chemicals, the presence of hormone-like materials (e.g. soya phytosteroids) in the food, and environmental pollutants. The author especially emphasizes the danger of oxytocin, as a perinatal imprinter, as it is used very broadly and can basically influence the emotional and social spheres and the appearance of certain diseases such as auitism, schizophrenia and parkinsonism. The danger of perinatal imprinters is growing, considering their effects on the human evolution. Orv. Hetil., 2013, 154, 128–135.

Annotation:
A statesman of Canada, Pierre Elliot Trudeau (1918—2000), a Liberal Prime Minister in 1968—1979, 1980—1984, is the author of the “patriation” of the Constitution of 1982, which included a universal Charter of Rights and Freedoms, and of the law on official bilingualism. Trudeau defended the integrity of state from the threats of supporters of extremist forms of separatism that arose among the radical nationalists of the French-speaking province of Quebec, directing federal-provincial contradictions into the political and legal channel. Trudeau was inspired by the concept of “One Canada” and the philosophy of “Just Society”, combining the ideas of the supremacy of individual freedoms with the high responsibility of the state, social measures with equal linguistic and cultural development of Francophones and Anglophones as parts of a single political nation. Trudeau’s enduring legacy also includes the abolition of the death penalty, the end of the discrimination of homosexuals, the simplification of divorce proceedings, multiculturalism and anti-poverty measures. The foreign policy course also bore the imprint of Trudeau’s ideas of justice in a changing global world. He initiated the diversification of international relations, collaborated with socialist countries, defended detente and nuclear security, reducing Canada’s participation in NATO and removing nuclear missiles from the country’s territory.

Annotation:
The genetic information contributed by eggs and spermatozoa to development of embryos to term has until recently been assumed to be equivalent. However, evidence now suggests that in the mouse and perhaps in all mammals the parental genomes have complementary roles during embryogenesis and both are essential for development to term (Surani, Barton & Norris, 1984; McGrath & Solter, 1984a; Cattanach & Kirk, 1985; Surani, 1986). Functional differences between the parental genomes presumably arise as a consequence of specific modifications of homologous chromosomes in the germline, when they are segregated and exposed to different epigenetic factors during oogenesis and spermatogenesis. These ‘imprinted’ modifications of parental chromosomes are then brought together following fertilization and subsequently propagated to influence events throughout development. It is also essential that at some stage of ontogeny the specific modifications are reversed and the whole process repeated in the formation of new germ cells.

Although taphonomic processes alter or destroy much of the preservable portion of the original community, many of these processes also imprint valuable paleoecological information about the fauna and the environment of deposition which might be employed in paleoenvironmental reconstruction (Brett and Baird, 1986; Speyer and Brett, 1986, 1988). Accordingly, taphonomic analysis of modern and ancient death assemblages has received much attention recently (Powell et al., in press; Parsons et al., 1988; Kidwell and Behrensmeyer, 1988) and a new concept, that of the taphofacies, has been developed (e.g., Speyer, 1988). Taphofacies are based on distinct suites of taphonomic characteristics, taphonomic signatures, imprinted on the shell material and on its relationship to the sedimentary fabric by mixtures of physical, biological and chemical processes, which potentially are unique for a given environment. Ideally, if unique taphonomic signatures can be identified and the formative processes understood in a wide range of modern environments, this baseline can be employed to make more accurate reconstructions of equivalent paleoenvironments.

Immune memory of a first infection with influenza virus establishes a lasting imprint. Recall of that memory dominates the response to later infections or vaccinations by antigenically drifted strains. Early childhood immunization before infection may leave an imprint with different characteristics. We report here a comparison of imprinting by vaccination and infection in a small cohort of nonhuman primates (NHPs). We assayed serum antibody responses for binding with hemaglutinnins (HAs) both from the infecting or immunizing strain (H3 A/Aichi 02/1968) and from strains representing later H3 antigenic clusters (“forward breadth”) and examined the effects of defined HA mutations on serum titers. Initial exposure by infection elicited strong HA-binding and neutralizing serum antibody responses but with little forward breadth; initial vaccination with HA from the same strain elicited a weaker response with little neutralizing activity but considerable breadth of binding, not only for later H3 HAs but also for HA of the 2009 H1 new pandemic virus. Memory imprinted by infection, reflected in the response to two immunizing boosts, was largely restricted (as in humans) to the outward-facing HA surface, the principal region of historical variation. Memory imprinted by immunization showed exposure to more widely distributed epitopes, including sites that have not varied during evolution of the H3 HA but that yield nonneutralizing responses. The mode of initial exposure thus affects both the strength of the response and the breadth of the imprint; design of next-generation vaccines will need to take the differences into account.

Annotation:
At the southernmost tip of South America, a thick pile of deep marine volcaniclastic rocks called the Yahgan Formation (Kranck, 1932) was deposited during the Early Cretaceous in a small marginal basin developed between the continent and a Pacific-facing volcanic arc (Katz, 1972; Dalziel et al., 1974). North and northwest of Tierra del Fuego, in the adjacent Austral or Magallanes basin, this unit is laterally replaced by coeval, fine-grained deposits representing basinal, slope, and platform marine settings (Winslow, 1982; Biddle et al., 1986; Wilson, 1991). The geometry of the basins changed markedly with a compressional event that produced the tectonic inversion of the marginal basin and the formation of a retroarc foreland basin in front of the rising cordillera. Closure of the marginal basin and strong deformation of the Yahgan Formation apparently occurred in the mid-Cretaceous (Halpern and Rex, 1972; Dalziel et al., 1974; Wilson, 1991); however, the timing of the opening and closing of the basin is poorly constrained because of the scarcity of fossil evidence. So far, a Late Jurassic-Neocomian age was favored for the Yahgan Formation on the basis of the record of belemnites and ammonites (Aguirre Urreta and Suárez, 1985; Halpern and Rex, 1972; Winn, 1978). Halpern and Rex (1972) mentioned the Hauterivian genus Favrella in Gardiner Island, but this record has been questioned by Thomson et al. (1982) who considered the ammonite imprint to be some kind of heteromorph. Also, the timing of the transition from marginal to foreland basin is not well documented. On the basis of indirect evidence the initiation of the foreland basin stage was assigned to the Albian in the Ultima Esperanza region of Chile (Wilson, 1991) and to the Late Cretaceous in northern Tierra del Fuego (Biddle et al., 1986). Recent field work by the authors in the area of No Top Mountain-Moat River, Tierra del Fuego (Figure 1), has resulted in the first record of diagnostic late Albian inoceramids in the Yahgan Formation. The objective of this note is to document this fauna and to briefly discuss its implications on the control of the timing of the transition from marginal to foreland basin in the area.

Skin ridges (dermatoglyphs or fingerprints) are a characteristic pattern of sulci on the skin of primates which appear on the entire hand palm and on the soles of the feet. Fingerprints are unique, irremovable and invariable which allows bio-identification of specific individuals. The aim of the study was to investigate the usefulness of the analysis of the average width of the skin ridges in archaeological research by analyzing the foot and hand prints found on 7 artifacts dating from the Middle Ages. An attempt was made to describe the preserved skin slate prints, as well as details of the construction of the prints. The fingers used in forming the pottery were recognized. Attempts were made to read the context of individual impressions. In the study, the following features were analyzed: legibility and suitability of the left imprint for the analysis, the possibility of determining the type of figures (whorls, loops, archs), the possibility of determining the minutiae, the density of the skin ridges left on the surface of the ceramics and the width of the skin ridges left on the surface of the ceramics. The classification of fingerprint minutiae proposed by Czesław Grzeszyk (1970) was used as well as classification of epidermal ridges peoposed by Lestrange (1953) and modified by Bochenska (1964) and Rogucka (1968). Analysis of the material allowed to conclude that imprints left on building ceramics can be as useful as those imprinted on utilitarian ceramics, despite differences in the composition of the raw material used in production. However, they require more skill to examine, as the impressions are often incomplete which may be related to the fillers added to the mass. Minutiae were evident on the impressions examined, and single bifurcation was the most common form. The tactile figure most commonly found on the fingertip impressions was the loop. It was not possible to delineate Galton lines due to the wiping of the triple ray. Due to the high illegibility of the prints, it was assumed with a high degree of uncertainty that the fingerprints belonged to adults, but the gender could not be determined. Noteworthy were the prints printed on the brick belonging to children. On the mentioned artifact, there is a footprint of a child aged 1–3 years and a handprint of a crawling infant, which allowed us to conclude that the children were under the care of craftsmen.

By the mid-1960s, American writer Kay Boyle was in possession of a three-book contract from Doubleday publishers in New York. The cornerstone of this deal was to be a history of Germany, a manuscript she began in the late 1950s. Boyle encountered difficulties completing this work, and after lobbying successfully to write a history of German women instead, she eventually abandoned the project altogether. To help her meet her professional obligations, Boyle hoped that Doubleday would accept a new plan to republish Three Short Novels, a work that had appeared under the Beacon imprint in 1958. That publisher still had four thousand copies of the book in its warehouse, however, and Doubleday editor Ken McCormick was unable to agree to Boyle’s proposal. McCormick suggested instead that she undertake work revising Robert McAlmon’s 1938 autobiography, Being Geniuses Together. Indeed, in the years following his death in 1956, Boyle had been unsuccessful in locating an American publisher for her friend’s book, so when Doubleday brought forward an edition of the work in 1968, it contained alternate chapters written by Kay Boyle, herself. McAlmon’s original text is approximately one hundred and ten thousand words in length; Boyle’s edition is one hundred and sixty thousand words, only seventy thousand of which were written by Robert McAlmon. ‘‘This present book is his,’’ Boyle wrote of McAlmon’s achievement in her 1984 afterword (333), and while one might argue that this is the case, no one can question the fact that his book was altered substantially from its original form.

Genomic imprinting is an epigenetic mechanism that differentially regulates the expression of certain genes, resulting in expression from only one parental allele. In mammals, genomic imprinting occurs in the placenta of both eutherians and marsupials, and plays an important role in regulating nutrition and growth of the developing fetus. The mammary gland also provides a critical source of nutrition for the neonate in all mammals, but there are few imprinting studies of this organ. Marsupials deliver tiny, altricial young that complete development during an extended lactation. INS (insulin) is paternally expressed in the eutherian and marsupial yolk sac and curiously is the only gene that is solely imprinted in this organ (1, 2). Insulin regulates carbohydrate metabolism, protein synthesis and cell growth. Insulin, (plus cortisol and prolactin) is required for the onset of lactation and the synthesis of milk (3). We characterised INS expression and examined its imprint status in the mammary gland of the tammar wallaby. INS mRNA is expressed in the mammary gland of the tammar from birth and throughout of lactation with highest expression at the initiation of lactation (Phase 1-2a) and around Phase 3 of lactation. Direct sequencing of 7 individuals at various stages of lactation confirmed that INS is imprinted in the mammary gland. Surprisingly, INS may also be imprinted in several other organs in the adult and juvenile wallaby. Preliminary bisulfite sequencing suggests there is a differentially methylated region located upstream of INS which may help to regulate INS expression. This is the first study to identify INS imprinting outside the yolk sac. As INS is critical for lactation, this is also the first indication that genomic imprinting may regulate lactation, suggesting that imprinting in the mammary gland may be as critical for post-natal survival as placental imprinting is for pre-natal development. The utilization of taphonomic information to formulate biostratinomic models for modern and ancient assemblages has become a potentially powerful tool in paleoecologic analysis. The division of fossil assemblages into discrete suites of taphonomically-similar material adds an extra dimension to the interpretation of depositional setting and paleoecologic structure (Brett and Baird, 1986; Speyer and Brett, 1986, 1988; Speyer, 1987). This approach uses the hypothesis that taphonomic alteration varies in a predictable way with depositional setting. In other words, each specific environment (e.g., low-salinity muddy bay, storm-dominated clastic shelf) is characterized by a unique suite of physical, chemical and biological processes: these processes imprint a unique and predictable “taphonomic signature” on the death assemblage.

This article focuses on the reception of Kafka in Turkey in conjunction with the status and treatment of ethnic and religious minorities. Investigating the reception and appropriation of Kafka in Turkey reveals the ongoing effort to secure freedom of speech in a country that is marked by a long history of Turkification and Islamisation. The strong tradition of Kafka reception in Turkey sensitises readers to the kinds of literary allusions and rhetorical flourishes that are associated with the Prague author. Characters such as Herr K. and Gregor Samsa, labyrinthine narratives and the motif of estrangement left a lasting imprint on literary texts that openly challenge or circumvent censorship. This article argues that Kafka became a seminal figure for writers in Turkey, writers whose investment was not necessarily in Kafka’s Jewishness but in specific narrative techniques that allowed them to develop their own literature of resistance. This article analyses four novels in this regard - Ferit Edgü’s Hakkâri’de bir Mevsim (1977), Erhan Bener’s Böcek (1982), Bilge Karasu’s Gece (1985), and Orhan Pamuk’s Kar (2004).

The Hellenistic enclosure of Histria (the west side) was discovered in 1950 and the results of research were published in 1966. From that moment on, it didn’t make the object of any further research. The defective perception of the foundation system of the so-called “sewage complex” resulted in insufficient research and documentation of the monument, with implications on the interpretation of the functionality of the whole. The present contribution advances a new interpretation of the ensemble named up until now the “sewage complex”. Its “troughs” are, within the present hypothesis, the imprints of a horizontal wood beam grid which played the role of a raft foundation. An important implication of this hypothesis is that the surface defined by the imprints of the wood grid raft foundation represents in fact the trace of a gate tower, unidentified until now. Thus, the gate of the Hellenistic enclosure was flanked by two rectangular towers, of which the south one identified during the 1951-1954 excavations and the north one reconstructed here by means of fresh interpretation of archaeological evidence.

The primary interaction of cultured Tetrahymena cells with a hormone (insulin in the present case) gives rise to hormonal imprinting, which accounts for a considerable increase in the later hormone binding capacity of the cells. Mixed culturing of imprinted and not imprinted (virgin) cells results in transmission to the latter of the information mediated by imprinting and thereby in a considerable increase in hormone binding capacity over that of pure hormone-preexposed cell cultures. The material substrate of intercellular information transmission is a cellular secretion which appears in the nutrient medium, and is increasingly released in presence of not imprinted (virgin) cells in the mixed culture.

Background: Silver-Russell syndrome (SRS; online inheritance in man 180860) is a low-birth-weight syndrome characterized by postnatal growth restriction and variable dysmorphic features. Although maternal uniparental disomy (UPD) of chromosome 7 and hypomethylation of H19 have been reported in up to 50% of all cases, no unifying mechanism is apparent. Subjects and Methods: Ten patients and their parents were studied using the Illumina GoldenGate methylation array and the Illumina 370K HumHap single-nucleotide polymorphism array to identify aberrations in DNA methylation as well as genomic changes including copy number changes and uniparental disomy events. Results: We found evidence of UPD events outside chromosome 7 in all patients. In up to 30% of patients with SRS, DNA methylation changes occur in imprinted gene loci outside 11p15.5 (PEG3, PLAGL1, and GRB10), not previously consistently linked with SRS. Furthermore, hypermethylation of GRB10 was associated with increased mRNA expression. In addition, 20% of patients appear to have DNA methylation abnormalities within multiple loci. Not all the imprinted loci with methylation defects were affected directly by UPD. Conclusions: The association of widespread UPD associated with abnormal methylation and mRNA expression in imprinted genes in SRS is consistent with the concept of UPD as an initial genomic abnormality leading to unstable DNA methylation within the regulatory network of imprinted genes. Furthermore, disruption of any one of these genes may contribute to the heterogeneous clinical spectrum of SRS.

tudy of philopatry and dispersal of pied flycatchers Ficedula hypoleuca was launched on the Courish Spit (SE Baltic) in 1981. Since then, ca. 9,000 nestlings were ringed at different sites in the Russian part of the Courish Spit. A total of 557 individuals ringed as pulli were recaptured in subsequent seasons in the study area. Both males and females are more often recaptured in the plots where they were ringed than in other plots. These results were interpreted in the framework of the hypothesis forwarded by Löhrl (1959) and supported by Berndt & Winkel (1979). These authors suggested that cavity nesters (pied flycatchers and collared flycatchers F. albicollis) imprint their future local breeding area during the period of postfledging exploration. Birds that survive until the next spring, return to these imprinted areas to breed. A similar study done by Sokolov et al. (1984) on the Courish Spit in an open nesting species, the chaffinch Fringilla coelebs, confirmed this finding. We assumed that juvenile pied flycatchers disperse for varying distances during their postfledging movements and imprint a local area, some 1–5 kilometres in diameter. This area is the goal of their migration next spring. It is suggested that in spring, yearlings are non–randomly distributed in respect to the area they have imprinted as juveniles. Recently, Vysotsky (2000, 2001) re–analysed the same data on philopatry of pied flycatchers on the Courish Spit and forwarded an alternative hypothesis. He suggests that juveniles, both males and females, do not imprint any local area during the postfledging period, but are distributed randomly across the area of several dozens of kilometres in spring. Vysotsky was able to show that distribution of distances of natal dispersal did not differ from the random pattern the study plot which was an 8.5 km long line of nest boxes along the Courish Spit. The aim of this study was to test these two alternative hypotheses. To do so, we set up nine new study plots in 2000. Over 800 nest–boxes were made available for the birds (in addition to the old 400) in the 44 km long area. We recaptured pied flycatchers returning for breeding during four years, 2000–2003. The distribution of natal dispersal distances was compared with the null model which assumes that pied flycatchers settle randomly in the study area. We took all nest boxes from which pied flycatchers successfully fledged in a particular year and all next boxes where we were able to capture either a male or a female in the subsequent year, and calculated the distances between each pair of such nest boxes. Simulations were run separately for each sex. Theoretical distributions already include control efficiency. If some nest boxes were not checked in some year, or if we failed to capture one or both members of a breeding pair, we did not include this nest box inthe model. Some birds could settle outside the study plot. Therefore, the theoretical distribution may underestimate the actual range of natal dispersal, but is unlikely to overestimate it. The number of females ringed as nestlings and recaptured as one–year–old birds was 43. The distribution of their natal distances (mean 6,8 km, SE = 0,81; median 5,4 km) was not significantly different from the pattern predicted by the null model (Wilcoxon matched pairs test: z = 1,25; p = 0,21). Conversely, males settled significantly closer to their natal nest box (n = 83; mean 4,3 km, SE = 0,57; median 2,5 km) than predicted by the model (Wilcoxon matched pairs test: z = 2,45; p = 0,014). For example, 24% of males settle within one km from their natal site, as compared with 7% predicted by the model. Males are found with a greater than chance probability within the 7 km zone around their natal site. The hypothesis by Vysotsky (2000) can thus be rejected for pied flycatcher males. Pied flycatcher females are known to settle at larger distances from their natal nest box. The very fact that were controlled 83 males and only 43 females suggests, assumed that sex ratio at fledging is close to being equal and that true survival rates during the first year of life do not differ greatly between the sexes, that many females emigrated from of our study plot. This does not mean that juvenile females do not imprint a home area during the postfledging period, as suggested by Vysotsky (2000). We think that the reason for this is not the inadequate navigational ability of the females but the fact that they were attracted by a prospecting male at some distance from their migratory destination and settle there. Such intercepting was suggested by Fedorov (1996) for Acrocephalus warblers, and it may exist in other migratory passerines. This is supported by the data on natal site fidelity from Spain which show that in Spanish pied flycatcher populations, recruitment rate did not differ between female and male juveniles (Potti & Montalvo, 1991). Females from these southern populations have a limited chance to be attracted by prospecting males in even more southern areas.

Biopolitics is the study of the relationship between our biological makeup and our political behavior. While this line of inquiry can be traced back to Plato and Aristotle, the contemporary surge of interest dates from the middle 1960s. Among the major contributing factors then were—take your pick—James C. Davies' Human Nature in Politics (1963), a 1964 essay by Lynton K. Caldwell, and a panel chaired by Albert Somit at the Southern Political Science Association (1967). Over the past two decades, there has been a dramatic growth of interest in “biopolitics,” as the area came to be known, to the point where some 900 works have now appeared (Peterson and Somit, in press).A variety of indicators testify to the acceptance that biopolitics has since achieved within the discipline: formal recognition by the International Political Science Association (1972); biopolitical articles in our leading professional journals; books bearing the imprint of leading publishers; the regular inclusion of panels on biology and politics at regional, national, and international conferences; support from major foundations, such as the Rockefeller and Lilly Foundations; awards by NSF and NIA for biopolitical research; the establishment of the Association for Politics and the Life Sciences (1981) and its journal, Politics and the Life Sciences (1982) and, most recently, recognition by the American Political Science Association of biopolitics as an “organized subfield.”

Many countries have deposit collections, which aim to be comprehensive for national imprints. It is desirable to find out how far they attain this aim. The deposit collection of the Koninklijke Bibliotheek in the Netherlands, unlike most countries, has no legal basis; publishers send voluntarily one copy of each publication. A study was conducted in 1995/1996 to assess its coverage, focusing on books with ISBNs, academic publications (dissertations etc.), grey literature and periodicals. For each of these categories, samples were taken from sources that offered a complete or the most comprehensive overview of Dutch imprints. Titles that did not meet the selection criteria of the library and titles that had not actually been published were removed from the samples, and the remaining titles were sought in the catalogue of the deposit collection to determine whether they were held, on order, or neither. The findings of the study indicate that coverage is not only good but has improved since the previous study in 1983. They also suggest that a legal basis for deposit is not a necessary condition for high coverage, although such a basis is currently being sought in the Netherlands. In the future, improvements in coverage can be made by applying some of the sources used for the study to daily practice. Other countries planning to embark upon a similar project may be able to use the experience gained.

During recent decades, the issue of the nature of Ediacaran cyclic imprints, including the widely distributed in Podillia (southwestern Ukraine) Nemiana simplex Palij, 1976, and the less common Beltanelliformis brunsae Menner, 1974 (Beltanelloides sorichevae (Sokolov), 1965) has been actively debated. Several new and similar forms were discovered in other regions of the Globe. The disk-like outlines were considered to be sufficient characters to synonymize several earlier recognized genera and species. The main additional features used to distinguish cyclic genera included such features as the shape and sculpture of surfaces, facial differences, and geological age. Novel palaeobiochemical studies of these ancient remains opened a new phase of discussions on the possible identities of the organisms that formed these fossil structures. Sometimes the remains are covered with thin brown films providing biochemical evidence for the cyanobacterial nature of some structures, for example Beltanelliformis brunsae. However, these films are found only in clayey or carbonate environments (rocks). For Nemiana Palij, characteristic features are clustered communities and budding. In contrast, Beltanelliformis brunsae formed taphonomic communities of closely arranged disks almost identical in their shape and size. Nemiana simplex structures are confined to clastic rocks (mostly thin-grained sandstones or siltstone), which are not suitable for good preservation of imprints and organic remains of ancient animals, cyanobacteria, algae, and plants. Considering these and some additional considerations, synonimization of Nemiana та Beltanelliformis, as well as some other Ediacaran fossil structures differing in their morphology, is at best premature.

Abstract Between 1932 and 1935, the Cuban Communist Party (PCC) argued that the majority-Black population of Oriente, the island's easternmost province, should be granted the right to national self-determination. While this policy has often been dismissed as a passing aberration, I argue that Black self-determination in fact left a lasting imprint both on the PCC and on the country's political landscape. I draw on research in Cuban and Russian archives to show that, far from being imposed on local Communists by the Comintern, the policy was most clearly formulated by Cubans, including leading members of African descent. I further show that it served as the focal point for the development of the PCC's antiracist stance, which by the end of the decade had made it a leading proponent of equality. Self-determination was integral to that transformation, which reshaped the party's composition and social basis for years to come.

Russian imperialism continues to leave a strong imprint on indigenous cultures across Siberia, and throughout the Russian Federation and the post-Soviet republics. Imperialism is invasive and persistent, and it might be impossible to escape its consequences. In 1986, African novelist and postcolonial theorist Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o published his influential essay collection, Decolonising the Mind: The Politics of Language in African Literature. One of his arguments is that no postcolonial subject could be free from the constraints of imperialism until she or he succeeded in freeing the mind from the trap of an imposed (and foreign) language. Ngũgĩ’s experience was based on his own life growing up in Kenya, but his lesson is as applicable to Siberia as it is for East Africa. For indigenous Siberians, language and education are at the forefront of the ongoing postcolonial struggle to maintain their cultural identities in modern Russia.

Not usually explicitly political, Krautrock bore the unmistakable imprint of the revolt of 1968. Groups arose out of the same milieux and shared many of the same concerns as anti-authoritarian radicals. Their rebellion expressed, in an artistic way, key themes of the broader countercultural moment of which they were a part. A central theme, the article argues, was escape – escape from the situation of Germany in the 1960s in general, and from the specific conditions of the anti-authoritarian revolt in the Federal Republic in the wake of 1968. Mapping Krautrock's relationship to key locations and routes (both real and imaginary), the article situates Krautrock in relationship to the political and cultural upheavals of its historical context.

AbstractThere is circumstantial and documentary evidence that printing from stereotype plates was being undertaken by Joseph Athias in Amsterdam no later than September 1673. The terms of an agreement of that date between Athias and the Widow Schippers and Anna Maria Stam imply that he had two English bibles in plates, one a twelvemo, the other an eighteenmo. The eighteenmo can be equated with an edition with engraved title-page with the imprint 'Cambridge, Roger Daniel, 1648', the last in a sequence of four with the same imprint, each of which carries over from its predecessor a certain amount of setting. The earliest in the sequence appears to have been printed by Joachim Nosche in Amsterdam. That the fourth was impressed at least six times is suggested by the fact that it was printed on six or more discrete papers, thus implying that it was either kept standing or plated. That it was indeed plated at some stage of its life, and that the plates consisted of columns (not pages), is confirmed by the observable differences in alignment of the columns from exemplar to exemplar, particular alignments agreeing with particular papers. Athias's primacy in the history of stereotyping is thus established. From among the many librarians who have assisted me during this investigation I should like to thank in particular Dr Lotte Hellinga, whose advice in the early stages proved especially helpful. Few months later, the world woke up to the news of the Soviet invasion in Budapest on November 4th, a defining moment in the history of the Cold War, which sent political shock waves and a flow of nearly a quarter-million Hungarian refugees to Western Europe. But how did this tense political situation affect the emerging field of international Scandinavian studies? Like modernism, postmodernism was an international phenomenon with significant regional variants. Britain played an important role in mediating between the very different postmodernisms developing in North America and Continental Europe. It helped that London was at the centre of architectural discourse in the 1970s. The Architectural Association attracted international figures such as Charles Jencks, Léon Krier, and Rem Koolhaas, while publications such as Architectural Design and Andreas Papadakis's Academy Editions imprint combined coverage of new buildings with excursions into theory and history. James Stirling, John Outram, and Edward Jones won important overseas commissions, while the work of Terry Farrell, Jeremy Dixon, and others was exhibited at the seminal 1980 Venice Biennale.

"Punjab, often referred to as the 'Land of five rivers,' has been a significant player in shaping India's historical narrative, leaving an enduring mark on its trajectory. This imprint stems from the courageous and patriotic endeavours of the people of Punjab, who have etched out a distinctive place for themselves. A comprehensive study of its people becomes imperative to comprehend the nuanced dynamics of Punjab's history. This involves delving into their historical, cultural, and religious roots and understanding their political legacy. The year 1947 marked India's liberation from British rule, coinciding with a partition based on the two-nation theory. Punjab bore a heavy toll during this partition, experiencing substantial human and territorial losses. The partition's catastrophic aftermath overshadowed the jubilation of independence for Punjab. Post-partition, Punjab portrayed a sombre and bleak landscape, with the migration of refugees significantly altering the communal composition of the region. This migration upheaved the administrative, economic, and political structures, introducing many complex challenges. The division of Punjab along communal lines generated a palpable sense of indignation and frustration among the Sikh community. The expectations of establishing a Sikh State in independent India, fervently supported by Sikh, Congress, and Hindu leaders, remained unfulfilled. Perceiving an unequal distribution of territory between Hindus and Muslims, the Sikhs advocated for a Punjabi Suba. In their pursuit of this objective, the Akali Dal employed diverse strategies. This culminated in the reorganisation of Punjab on March 21, 1966, leading to its further trifurcation."

One of the most important poets of postwar Hungarian literature, János Pilinszky’s (1921-1981) poetry represents the problems of connecting with the Other, the imprints of Second World War trauma and the struggle with God’s distance and silence. Although, unlike the case of most of his contemporaries in Eastern bloc Hungary, his poetry has been translated into several languages, he is hardly known in English-speaking countries. The metaphysically accented lyrical worldview and creator-centered aesthetics—which shows parallels with the Christian poetry of Michael Edwards—of this Hungarian poet are difficult to link or to bring into discourse. On the occasion of the most recent publication (Pilinszky 2019) of Pilinszky’s non-literary publications which are practically unknown to non-Hungarian scholars, I attempt to outline the major attributes of Pilinszky’s poetry and aesthetics in order to highlight—with a mystical approach in mind—the intertwining presence of said lyre and aesthetics in his poem, In memoriam F. M. Dosztojevszkij [‘In Memoriam F. M. Dostoevsky’].

Life and work on the refugee journey are among the latest contemporary challenges that instigate to look and to research. In order to enhance the discussion, it was considered pertinent to pay attention to the experience of looking at the image. We took the woodcut Day and Night, art by Maurits Cornelius Escher, which alludes to the migratory movement of birds, because it also provokes the look, given the characteristics that the artist imprints on it. The concepts of smooth and striated space, by Deleuze and Guattari, imbricated in a reference regarding the refugee situation, were taken as the theoretical basis for the discussion. The conversation between image and theory broadened the look beyond bureaucratic, legal and statistical issues, often associated with studies about refugees and allowed pointing out relationships of continuity and coexistence in their ways of living and working. It is understood that, by provoking the experience of the look, the image can be captured, cut, reduced, enlarged, twisted, in an effort of meaning not necessarily obvious.

AbstractCollisions of counter-propagating solitary waves are investigated experimentally. Precision measurements of water-surface profiles are made with the use of the laser induced fluorescence (LIF) technique. During the collision, the maximum wave amplitude exceeds that calculated by the superposition of the incident solitary waves, and agrees well with both the asymptotic prediction of Su & Mirie (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 98, 1980, pp. 509–525) and the numerical simulation of Craig et al. (Phys. Fluids, vol. 18, 2006, 057106). The collision causes attenuation in wave amplitude: the larger the wave, the greater the relative reduction in amplitude. The collision also leaves imprints on the interacting waves with phase shifts and small dispersive trailing waves. Maxworthy’s (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 76, 1976, pp. 177–185) experimental results show that the phase shift is independent of incident wave amplitude. On the contrary, our laboratory results exhibit the dependence of wave amplitude that is in support of Su & Mirie’s theory. Though the dispersive trailing waves are very small and transient, the measured amplitude and wavelength are in good agreement with Su & Mirie’s theory. Furthermore, we investigate the symmetric head-on collision of the highest waves possible in our laboratory. Our laboratory results show that the runup and rundown of the collision are not simple reversible processes. The rundown motion causes penetration of the water surface below the still-water level. This penetration causes the post-collision waveform to be asymmetric, with each departing wave tilting slightly backward with respect to the direction of its propagation; the penetration is also the origin of the secondary dispersive trailing wavetrain. The present work extends the studies of head-on collisions to oblique collisions. The theory of Su & Mirie, which was developed only for head-on collisions, predicts well in oblique collision cases, which suggests that the obliqueness of the collision may not be important for this ‘weak’ interaction process.

During the first screening of Joseph Cornell’s Rose Hobart at the Julien Levy Gallery in New York City in 1936, the Surrealist painter Salvador Dalí forcefully knocked over the film projector in a rage, accusing Cornell of having stolen the idea for the film from Dalí’s own subconscious. A foundational figure in American surrealism, Cornell had produced a new and startling variation on the compilation film. Rose Hobart represented the first attempt by the filmmaker to produce an intimate psychological exploration through found images drawn from the informal archive of the junk shop, a dramatic break from the compilation filmmakers for whom the archive primarily served an evidentiary role. In this video essay, Stephen Broomer surveys Cornell’s films, focusing on the artist’s relationship to his own rough, provisional archive as a site of psychic provocation. This video essay addresses the oneiric singularity of Cornell's films by visually remixing the films, integrating them alongside compilation, surrealist, and trance films, and in doing so explores Cornell’s use of the hard cut to suggest reaction, contrast and equivalence.

Founded in 1980, the Association for Politics and the Life Sciences (APLS) sought to establish biopolitics as a recognized field and to integrate biologically based research methods into mainstream political science. The association's founders established these goals to encourage a generation of scholars and promote the spread of biopolitical knowledge. There was early success when the American Political Science Association (APSA) recognized biopolitics as an organized section. However, this development did not leave an appreciable imprint on the political science profession and the experiment conjoining the two did not last long. The other goal of the founders, to integrate biologically based research methods into mainstream political science, faced more formidable obstacles and still faces challenges, though not without some progress.
