Der volle Inhalt der QuelleWorking with the English and British illustrated editions of John Bunyan's The Pilgrim's Progress up to the end of the Romantic era, this study examines the allegory's iconographic history through its editorial one, in particular how its illustrations influenced its reading by the public. Part one, a historical inquiry into the gradual inclusion of illustrations in the book, studies their transformation in light of contextualised book and engraving practices. Part two is a literary exegesis of the treatment of The Pilgrim's Progress by its many illustrators, which aims at showing the reciprocal influence between its iconographic and critical traditions. A third and final part examines the interplay between the text of The Pilgrim's Progress and its illustrations within the illustrated book. This study's objective is to demonstrate that The Pilgrim's Progress might not have enjoyed its extraordinary editorial career (nor canonised status) had it not been so copiously illustrated

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThe amount of illustrated books published in Quebec between 1880 and 1940 is the result of a transfer and of an awareness of issues concerning research, practices and cultural movements – of simultaneously artistic, literary and editorial nature – borrowed by European trends and especially French ones. By the study of two hundred two illustrated novels and poetry collections destined to adults, the purpose is to identify the presence of the artistic and editorial French influence and the mechanisms of this contribution. The various aspects was built around three research axis : the possibilities of artistic formation of illustrators in Quebec and in France, the emergence of the Quebec editorial scope (the modern professional editor generates an important influence on the illustrated book’s layout) and the opening towards artistic modernity (page’s layout, techniques used, iconographic and stylistic content of the illustrations and evolution of the interaction document-images)

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleLiterature for the young is often illustrated by drawings, but what happens when the illustrations are photographs? Only recently has the corpus of photographically-illustrated children’s literature begun to be examined. It is proving to be much more extensive than had previously been imagined, and necessitates a study from several different angles. The aim of this thesis is to highlight the close links between children’s books and photographic illustration and to measure the implications of the relationship between these two arts (considered ‘minor’ from a broad historical or geographical perspective) Covering European and North American literature from 1860 to the present day this thesis shows that photoliterary production for children is in fact a publishing genre in its own right, although today many such productions are still filed under the label “Picturebooks” or in French, “Littérature de jeunesse” [children’s literature]. By invoking the field of photoliterature, this study brings to light the layout of various phototextual devices and examines how text and photographs combine to create meaning for a young reader. It also retraces the relations between certain pedagogical theories and the critical reception of these works, revealing the manner in which both are inextricably bound up with particular publishing decisions

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThis thesis deals with French children’s picture book series since the 1960s. It highlights the difficulties to bridge creation and edition while providing an analysis of editorial creativity. After mentionning historical models of children’s series, we describe the evolution of series models (chapter 1 and 2). We show that this evolution was not without challenges. In the 60s and 70s, some authors and illustrators were craving for more legitimacy (chapter 3). At the same period, Ruy Vidal’s editorial career as publisher and editor allows us to discover the difficulties to introduce editorial innovations (chapter 4). It is then necessary to study the editorial conditions for creativity (chapter 5, 6, 7) through the examples of « Studio Delpire » (we wonder about his editorial « eye » and about the creative function of the editorial team), O. Douzou (Rouergue) (the question here is : what does an author-illustrator-editor provide ?), J. Magnani, a contemporary publisher (who tries to go beyond the frontier between children’s and adult’s books). All in all, these elements will help us discover ways to think of and analyze editorial creativity. The thesis is based on unexplored archives and numerous interviews with actors of the children’s picture books field
