Abstract. Frequent land conflicts are often unconsiderly triggered by ideological differences. This is also what can be felt in the land conflict between the Porto and Haria communities. Therefore, this research aimed to clearly take to surface these ideological motifs by utilizing the categorization of land ideology in the Old Testament proposed by Norman C. Habel. The results of this study showed that the two conflicting societies each have an ideology that also can be found in the land ideology in the Old Testament, namely the ideology of kingship and the ideology of the ancestors. Therefore, to mediate the conflict, it is necessary to offer another ideology that does not put pressure on land ownership claims, namely the ideology of prophethood.Abstrak. Konflik tanah yang sering dijumpai seringkali tanpa disadari dipicu oleh adanya perbedaan ideologi. Hal itu jugalah yang dapat dirasakan dalam konflik tanah masyarakat Porto-Haria. Oleh karena itu, kajian ini bermaksud untuk menampilkan secara jelas ke permukaan motif-motif ideologis tersebut dengan memanfaatkan kategorisasi ideologi tanah dalam Perjanjian Lama yang dikemukakan oleh Norman C. Habel. Hasil kajian ini menunjukkan bahwa kedua masyarakat yang berkonflik masing-masing memiliki ideologi yang mirip dengan ideologi tanah dalam Perjanjian Lama, yaitu ideologi kerajaan dan ideologi nenek moyang. Oleh karena itu untuk menengahi konflik tersebut perlu ditawarkan ideologi lainnya yang tidak menekankan pada klaim kepemilikan tanah, yaitu ideologi kenabian.

ABSTRAK Artikel ini membahas ideologi dan aparatus negara dalam tiga cerpen karya Putu Wijaya. Penelitian ini menggunakan paradigma Abrams, yaitu pendekatan objektif dan pendekatan diskurtif. Pendekatan objektif digunakan untuk menganalisis unsur-unsur intrinsik tiga cerpen Putu Wijaya. Pendekatan diskurtif digunakan untuk membongkar ideologi dengan perspektif ideologi Louis Althusser. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan studi pustaka dengan mengandalkan jenis data kualitatif. Hasil penelitian ini menujukkan bahwa bentuk ideologi dan aparatus negara yang ditemukan beragam, yakni (1) tiap tokoh utama direpresentasikan hal-hal yang melekat pada permasalah tokoh utama; (2) ada interpelasi pada tokoh utama agar diakui sebagai subjek; (3) bentuk ideologi yang ditemukan yakni ideologi dominan, ideologi terkungkung, ideologi bebas, ideologi resistensi, dan ideologi tengah terdapat di dalamnya; (4) aparatus ideologi negara (ISA) mendominasi dalam tiga cerpen karya Putu Wijaya.Kata Kunci: ideologi, aparatus negara, Putu Wijaya, Althusser ABSTRACT This article discusses ideology and the state apparatus in three short stories by Putu Wijaya. The study employs the Abrams paradigm, namely an objective and discursive approach. This study applies an objective approach to analyzing the intrinsic elements of three short stories by Putu Wijaya. A discursive approach is used to dismantle ideology with the ideological perspective of Louis Althusser. Qualitative data were collected using library research method. The results of this study show that ideology and state apparatus are represented in a variety of ways; first, each main character is represented by the problems he experiences; second, there is an interpellation on the main character to be recognized as subject; third, the ideological forms found are dominant ideology, confined ideology, free ideology, ideological resistance, and central ideology; last, the ideological state apparatuses are prominent in three of Putu Wijaya's short stories..Keywords: ideology, state apparatus, Putu Wijaya, Althusser

ABSTRAK: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menjelaskan strategi kritik cerpen “Telinga” karya Seno Gumira Ajidarma (SGA) terhadap rezim Orde Baru (Orba) Indonesia. Hal tersebut akan dijelaskan dengan cara meninjau struktur produksi dan ideologi teks cerpen “Telinga” karya SGA. Untuk menjelaskannya, penelitian ini menggunakan teori kritik sastra materialistis Terry Eagleton. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini ialah metode dialektika. Metode ini memungkinkan peneliti untuk menjelaskan ideologi teks sebagai produk pengolahan estetik atas struktur produksi pada masa Orba. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan sebagai berikut. Pertama, cerpen “Telinga” sebagai kritik hadir dengan cara menerobos struktur produksi pada masa Orba yang selalu diatur oleh pemerintah. Struktur produksi pada masa Orba yang berkaitan dengan corak produksi umum didominasi oleh pemerintah. Segala bentuk produksi diatur sehingga muncul ideologi umum represif yang berada dalam naungan ideologi Pancasila. Hal tersebut memengaruhi corak produksi sastra yang dituntut untuk pro-pemerintah. Namun, ideologi kepengarangan SGA justru hadir sebagai bentuk resistensi kepada pemerintah sehingga ideologi estetik dalam cerpen “Telinga” berbentuk kontradiksi dengan ideologi umum pada masa Orba. Kedua, kritik cerpen “Telinga” diartikulasikan dengan ideologi teks yang hadir melalui simbol-simbol. Dalam manifestasinya, cerpen “Telinga” berhasil mengkritik Orba dengan cara menyampaikan fakta realitas tanpa harus digugat oleh pemerintah. Kritik tersebut pada gilirannya juga memanfaatkan narasi satire. Dengan demikian, cerpen “Telinga” sebagai kritik dinaturalisasikan melalui ruang estetik untuk mengungkap fakta yang dibungkam pada masa Orba.KATA KUNCI: Struktur produksi; estetik; ideologi teks; Orde Baru (Orba); Terry Eagleton “TELINGA” SHORT STORY CRITICISM STRATEGY TOWARDS THE ORBA: REVIEWING PRODUCTION STRUCTURE AND IDEOLOGY OF THE TEXT ABSTRACT: This research aims to explain the strategy of “Telinga” short story by Seno Gumira Ajidarma (SGA) towards the Indonesian New Order (Orba) regime. It will be explained by reviewing the production structure and ideology of the text of “Telinga” short story by SGA. This research uses Terry Eagleton’s literature’s materialistic criticism theory. The method used in this research is the dialectical method. This method allows the researcher to explain the ideology of the text as a product of aesthetic processing of the production structure during the Orba era. The results showed the following. First, “Telinga” short story as a criticism comes by breaking through the production structure during the Orba era which was always regulated by the government. The production structure during the Orba era related to the general mode of production was dominated by the government. All forms of production are regulated in order that a repressive general ideology emerges under the auspices of the Pancasila ideology. This affected the literary mode of production which was demanded to support the government. However, the SGA’s authorship ideology actually exists as a form of resistance againts the government in order that the aesthetic ideology in “Telinga” short story contradicts the general ideology during the Orba era. Second, “Telinga” short story criticism is articulated with the ideology of the text which is present through symbols. In its manifestation, “Telinga” short story successfully criticizes the Orba regime by delivering reality-based fact without any accusation by government. The critic on its turn also applies satire narracy. ABSTRACTThe Resilience of Pancasila Ideology had ups and downs conditions. Its could not be separated from the efforts and phenomenon in the society. That phenomenon caused the relisilience of Pancasila ideology be strengthened or weakened. Moreover, the condition of Indonesia was experiencing ideological problems right now. This paper decribed about the importance of the resilience of Pancasila ideology in supporting to national resilience, what were the factors that weakened and strengthened the resilience of Pancasila ideology, and what efforts should be made to strengthened the resilience of Pancasila ideology. The methods used in this research were field research and library research, namely interview, FGD, survey, and literature review. This research also briefly described about the instrument of Pancasila Ideology Index (IKIP). The main aspects measured in IKIP were divinity, humanity, unity, popularness, and social justice. The indicators of IKIP were politics, nationality, social, cultural, religious and economic. This article was written and based on research for two years (2017-2018) conducted in nine provinces in Indonesia. Namely: Manokwari (West Papua), Ambon (Maluku), Kupang (East Nusa Tenggara), Denpasar (Bali), Makassar (South Sulawesi), Medan (North Sumatra), Pontianak (West Kalimantan), Yogyakarta (Yogyakarta Special Region), and Jakarta. The location was chosen and based on the level of heterogeneity (religion, ethnicity, and culture). Sampling method used multi-stage random sampling.This article also described the portrait of resilience of Pancasila ideology in the nine (9) cities of IndonesiaABSTRAKKetahanan Ideologi Pancasila mengalami pasang surut. Hal ini tidak terlepas dari adanya upaya dan kejadian dalam masyarakat yang membuat ketahanan ideologi Pancasila menguat atau melemah, baik secara sengaja maupun di luar kesengajaan. Terkait dengan kondisi Indonesia saat ini yang tengah mengalami problematika ideologis, 278 Jurnal Ketahanan Nasional, Vol. 25, No. 2, Agustus 2019: 277-294 penelitian ini sangat diperlukan untuk mengkaji pentingnya ketahanan ideologi Pancasila dalam mendukung ketahanan nasional; apa saja faktor yang memperkuat dan memperlemah ketahanan ideologi Pancasila; serta upaya apa saja yang bisa dilakukan untuk meningkatkan ketahanan ideologi Pancasila. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah penelitian lapangan dan pustaka, di antaranya wawancara, FGD, survei, dan kajian pustaka. Penelitian ini juga menjelaskan secara ringkas instrument Indeks Ideologi (IKIP). Aspek utama yang diukur dalam IKIP ini adalah ketuhanan, kemanusiaan, persatuan, kerakyatan, dan keadilan sosial. Pada setiap aspek dikategorsasikan lagi ke dalam indikator-indikator yaitu yaitu politik, kenegaraan-kebangsaan, sosial, kebudayaan, keagamaan, dan ekonomi. Artikel ini ditulis berdasarkan penelitian selama dua tahun (2017-2018) pada sembilan provinsi di Indonesia, yaitu Manokwari (Papua Barat), Ambon (Maluku), Kupang (NTT), Denpasar (Bali), Makassar ( Sulawesi Selatan), Pontianak (Kalimantan Barat), Yogyakarta (DIY), Jakarta (DKI Jakarta), dan Medan (Sumatera Utara). Pemilihan lokasi berdasarkan tingkat heterogenitas agama, suku, dan budaya. Metode penentuan lokasi survei menggunakan multi-stage random sampling. Pada akhir artikel ini juga dipaparkan hasil pengukuran tingkat ketahanan ideologi Pancasila pada sembilan lokasi tersebut.

ABSTRAKPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengungkapkan kekuasaan dan dominasi yang terdapat dalam novel Amba karya Laksmi Pamuntjak. Adapun masalah yang melatarbelakangi penelitian ini ialah bagaimana bentuk hegemoni ideologi masyarakat dan pemerintahan yang terefleksikan dalam novel Amba. Penelitian ini bertolak pada teori ideologi Gramsci dengan menggunakan pendekatan hegemoni ideologi. Pendekatan ini merupakan konsep berpikir Antonio Gramsi mengenai konsep kebebasan, wewenang atau kekuasaan. Penelitian ini dilakukan menggunakan metode deskriptif analisis. Pengumpulan sumber data yang berupa kutipan dihasilkan dari membaca sumber. Kemudian, data yang terkumpul dicatat, dianalisis, dan diinterpretasikan dengan perspektif hegemoni ideologi. Hasil analisis disajikan dalam bentuk narasi deskriptif-kualitatif. Hasil yang didapat dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa novel Amba karya Laksmi Pamuntjak sarat dengan muatan hegemoni ideologi yang meliputi ideologi keagamaan, ideologi politik, dominasi kekuasaan dan kekerasan fisik maupun nonfisik yang dilakukan perorangan maupun sosial. Kata Kunci: Hegemoni, Ideologi, Kekuasaan dan Amba ABSTRACT This research is aimed to express power and domination in Amba novel written by Laksmi Pamuntjak. The issue of this research is how to shape people and government's hegemoni ideology which are reflected in Amba novel. This research stand on the theory of Gramsci's ideology using hegemoni ideology approach. This approach is a concept of Antonio Gramsi's thinking about a concept of freedom, authority, or power. This research used analysis descriptive method. The collection of data sources in the form of quotations is generated from reading sources. Then it's written, analyzed, and intepreted by perspective hegemoni ideology. The analysis result is written by descriptive-qualitative naration. The research showed Amba novel by Laksmi Pamuntjak full of hegemoni ideology content which is consist of religious ideology, politics ideology, power domination and physical-non physical abuse done by person or public. <p>ABSTRAK<br /> <br />Penelitian ini bertujuan memaparkan struktur ideologi Teks Sastra dalam Majalah Pandji Poestaka pada masa<br />pendudukan Jepang di Indonesia (1943-1945). Pendekatan teori yang digunakan adalah materialisme yang<br />dipaparkan oleh Eagleton. Kritik sastra materialistik mangasumsikan bahwa teks sastra tidak bertindak pasif, tetapi<br />secara aktif menentukan proses produksi dan struktur ideologi yang membentuknya. Karya sastra merupakan produk<br />interaksi dan artikulasi aspek eksternal dan internal teks. Skema kritik sastra materialistik memosisikan aspek<br />eksternal berada di luar teks yang terdiri atas kontituen-kontituen ideologi yang meliputi: corak produksi umum,<br />ideologi umum, corak produksi sastra, ideologi kepegarangan, dan ideologi estetik. Internal teks merujuk pada<br />ideologi teks yang merupakan produk dari interaksi dan artikulasi kontituen-kontituen eksternal teks yang telah<br />dijabarkan sebelumnya dan membentuk serangkaian tegangan, pengolahan dan transformasi. Hasil Penelitian<br />ini menunjukkan bahwa teks yang berupa Teks Sastra dalam Majalah Pandji Poestaka merupakan hasil artikulasi<br />dominasi kekuasaan Jepang yang menerapkan sistem pemerintahan fasisme-militersme. Mobilization and Control <br />merupakan teknik Jepang guna mendominasi kekuatan dan relasi produksi di Indonesia. Dominasi tersebut<br />mengakibatkan tekanan dan ketimpangan dalam masyarakat, sehingga memunculkan kontestasi ideologi yang<br />diusung oleh para pejuang nasionalis, gerakan bawah tanah, hingga pemberontakan masyarakat kelas bawah yaitu<br />petani. Simpulannya pemberontakan tesebut melahirkan ideologi nasionalisme, sosialisme hingga anarkisme yang<br />memiliki cita-cita yang sama yaitu semangat kebebasan, anti imperialisme, kemerdekaan dan bayangan akan sebuah<br />bangsa (nation). <br /> <br />Kata Kunci: Struktur Ideologi, Teks Sastra Pandji Poestaka, Materialisme Eagleton.<br /> <br /> <br />ABSTRACT<br /> <br />This study describes the ideology structure of Teks Sastra in Pandji Poestaka magazine during the Japanese <br />colonial Indonesia (1943-1945). Theory applied in this study is Eagleton’s materialism. This critic concerns on how<br />a literary work acts in the process of production and in shaping the ideology structure. In this case, a literary work<br />is regarded as a product of interaction and articulation in external and internal aspects of the text. The materialism<br />critic places the external aspect outside the text, includes ideology constituents, such as general mode of production,<br />general ideology, literary mode of production, author ideology, and aesthetic ideology. Meanwhile, this critic refers<br />the internal aspect to ideology of the text. This ideology is a product of those constituents’ interaction and<br />articulation that form a sequence of exertions, accomplishment, and transformation. The result of the study<br />shows that the text Teks Sastra in Panjdi Poestaka magazine is articulation of Japanese domination that applied<br />fascism-militarism in their colonial. In order to dominate the strength and the production relation in Indonesia,<br />Japan also uses mobilization and control technic. Therefore, there is inequality in society and they are pressured.<br />This leads the society to do many kinds of struggle to fight the Japanese domination. The struggles produce the</p><p><br />ideology of nationalism, anti-imperialism. AbstractIdeology is important in the order of social and state life. Philosophically, the concept of ideology is very subjective. There are those who consider ideology as dogma, while others are concerned with linking ideology as political discourse and political views. Meanwhile, some think that ideology is based on the concrete interests of social class which is marked by the absence of interest on an economic basis. In the socio-historical context of the Indonesian nation, ideology is used as a "tool" for the struggle to form the mental, character, spirit and thoughts of anti-colonialism, so as to create a manifestation of the fundamental values of Indonesia in the form of Pancasila formulated by national figures. The purpose of this research is to study and analyze the concept of Sukarno's Marhaenism ideology which became the forerunner of thoughts/ideas about Pancasila. The method used is concept analysis with a qualitative approach. Based on the results of the analysis carried out, the results show that marhaenism conceptually emphasizes aspects of the struggle of the marhaens, namely the groups exploited by imperialism and capitalism so that they have difficulty being able to prosper themselves. The important elements in the ideology of Marxism are socio-nationalism, socio-democracy, mass-action, machtvorming, non-cooperation, and self-reliance. and self-reliance.--------------AbstrakIdeologi menjadi hal yang penting dalam tatanan kehidupan sosial maupun bernegara. Secara filosofis, konsep ideologi sangatlah subjektif. Ada yang menganggap ideologi sebagai dogma, ada juga yang menyangkutpautkan ideologi sebagai diskursus politik dan pandangan politik. Sedangkan sebagian lagi menganggap ideologi didasarkan pada kepentingan konkret kelas sosial yang ditandai oleh tidak adanya kepentingan atas dasar ekonomi. Dalam sosio-historis bangsa Indonesia, ideologi dijadikan sebagai “alat” perjuangan untuk membentuk mental, karakter, semangat dan pemikiran anti kolonialisme, sehingga terciptalah manifestasi dari nilai-nilai fundamental keindonesiaan berupa Pancasila yang dirumuskan oleh para tokoh nasional. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengkaji dan menganalisis konsep tentang ideologi Marhaenisme Sukarno yang menjadi cikal bakal pemikiran/gagasan mengenai Pancasila. Metode yang digunakan adalah analisis konsep dengan pendekatan kualitatif. Berdasarkan hasil dari analisis yang dilakukan didapatkan hasil bahwa marhaenisme secara konseptual menekankan pada aspek perjuangan kaum marhaen, yaitu kelompok yang dieksploitasi oleh imperialisme dan kapitalisme sehingga mereka kesulitan untuk bisa mensejahterakan dirinya. Adapun unsur-unsur penting dalam ideologi marhaenisme yaitu sosio-nasionalisme, sosio-demokrasi, aksi-massa, machtvorming, non-kooperasi, dan self-reliance.

Sesungguhnya, dalam karya perempuan perupa kontemporer Bali terdapat ideologi yang bekerja di baliknya. From the results of the study showed that: 1) Profile picture in general is to achieve the profile of graduates. There are three profiles of PAI graduates: educators, education counselors, and educational researchers. curriculum objectives in the form of learning achievement. The curriculum materials are courses that are derivatives of the curriculum. The curriculum method uses student centered learning (SCL) principles, and curriculum evaluation using the rubric system. 2) The educational ideology contained in the Curriculum refers to KKNI and SNPT berparadigma Integration-Interconnection applied in PAI Study Program Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta is an eclectic ideology. Dari hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa: 1) Gambaran profil secara umum adalah untuk mencapai profil lulusan. Terdapat tiga profil lulusan PAI yaitu pendidik, konselor pendidikan, dan peneliti pendidikan. tujuan kurikulum berupa capaian pembelajaran. Materi kurikulum adalah mata kuliah yang merupakan turunan dari kurikulum. Metode kurikulum menggunakan prinsip student centered learning (SCL), dan evaluasi kurikulum menggunakan sistem rubrik. 2) Muatan ideologi pendidikan yang terdapat pada Kurikulum mengacu KKNI dan SNPT berparadigma Integrasi-Interkoneksi yang diterapkan di Program Studi PAI Fakultas Ilmu Tarbiyah Dan Keguruan UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta adalah ideologi yang bersifat eklektik. The article offers a concise analysis of three cultures (global (Anglo-American), European continental and Russian) in the context of the civilizational approach and such phenomena as ideology (national-wide) and post-ideology. The author gives the analysis of the metamorphosis of ideology into post-ideology, as well as their connection to the concept of “cultural code”. He explains how in the course of the transition from ideology to post-ideology, there happens the “rise from the depths of culture” of the values that have not changed since pre-political times, and constitute the cultural code. He also explains why, when ideology is transformed into post-ideology, the “death of the ideologue” occurs and some values and rights become “natural”. The differences between the three cultures under consideration are shown by the example of some traits-values, and the intermediate (buffer) state of the European continental culture in relation to the global and Russian culture. The author suggests to study the “cultural code” using sociological and political science tools, as well as philosophical analysis of texts. The manifestation of the cultural code is associated with the response of its carriers to an external challenge - a situation.

This article analyzes the basic approaches to the understanding of legal ideology as a general scientific concept and legal category. The content of the concept of the author is reduced to a self-contained form of expression of the ideas of public conscience and the way of formation of legal thinking and law understanding. It is given that the legal ideology is formed and changes on the basis of spiritual and mental and socio-economic. In the legal achievements of the Ukrainian people and implements (and sometimes determines) the socio-political and legal values of the state. It is recognized that the bearers of legal ideology, or so-called ideologists are recognized scientists, schools of science, as well as the subjects of law implementation and law study, which in the process of its activity develop fundamental ideas, doctrinal approaches, concepts, judgment, etc. As a result of the analysis of scientific approaches to the understanding of the essence and characteristics of the concept of legal ideology, it is recognized that this form of ideology has a monistic character, As its essence is conditioned by the rule of law, unlike political ideology, which is always pluralistic, as it is based on public (collective) interests. The author considers the purpose aspect of legal ideology to be in the development, popularization and substantiation of certain legal ideas, principles and positions, in the formation of doctrines of legal science, which directly or indirectly influence the legal regulation of relations with the society. This influence is exercised through the rule-making, law enforcement, interpretative, law enforcement and other activities of state authorities, etc. The functional aspect of legal ideology, in the author's opinion, lies in reflecting the current state of law relations, popularization of the foundations of public law and order, integration of ideological goals of developing the legal system in the system of state legislation.

Marhaenism is identical to an ideology of struggle against capitalism that grows and develops in this world. Marhaenism was born and grew based on a sense of shared destiny and shared responsibility caused by colonialism and imperialism. As a result of colonization by foreign nations, the Indonesian people live in full of suffering and misery. With this ideology, it is hoped that colonized Indonesia will soon rise and recover. Then, they are able to manage the wealth of their own country without submitting to others. Marhaenism tries to erase all forms of contradictions and differences in life. This study discusses civil war and ideology conflict represented in Alex Irvine's Transformers: Exodus. It aims to analyze how the ideological conflict contributes to civil war in the novel and the moral messages that the readers can learn from the narrative. Antonio Gramsci's theory of hegemony and Terry Eagleton's theory of ideological features are used to examine ideology's role, and the moral-philosophical approach is used to analyze moral values. The findings suggest the existence of three ideologies: the Cybertronian traditions, the Autobots' ideology, and the Decepticons' ideology. In addition, this study finds that the novel contains moral values related to peace, toleration, and diplomacy.

Metode yang dipakai dalam penelitian ini ialah dengan pendekatan yuridis normatif ditujukan pada penelitian kepustakaan. Tujuan paripurna yang hendak dicapai itu tidak lain yaitu terwujudnya Bangsa dan Negara Indonesia yang adil dan makmur tidak hanya slogan, moto, atau simbolis apalagi suatu mimpi yang tak bertepi sehingga menjadi ilusi, tetapi tujuan yang memang seharusnya diperjuangkan oleh semua elemen bangsa sebagai suatu keniscayaan. Abstract The purpose of this research is to describe that Pancasila as the ideology of the Indonesian nation is, in essence, a reflection of the Indonesian nationality, which was born from a nation that had glorious past and became an heirloom for future generations throughout the ages. Pancasila as the ideology of the Indonesian nation contains a holistic and deep meaning, not only as the basis or foundation of the Indonesian nation and state, but further than that the ideology of the Indonesian nation is essentially the ultimate goal of a nation that has various dimensions to achieve a plenary goal. The method used in this research is a normative juridical approach aimed at library research. Introduction. The study of the state and law of the USSR, whose successor and legal continuer is the modern Russian Federation, is impossible in isolation from the activities and political outlook of I.V. Stalin, one of its founders and state leader for almost thirty years. The subject of the paper is the discourse analysis of the political and legal ideology of I.V. Stalin by studying the ontological and epistemological prerequisites of its content and identifying on this basis the historical and cultural conditionality of its conceptual idea. Methods. The methodological framework for the work is a set of methods of scientific cognition, among which the main ones are a combination of dialectics and metaphysics, formational and civilizational approaches, and a number of general scientific and specific scientific methods. The main content of the paper is to establish the features of Stalin’s worldview as a politician and theorist and to study the main points of view on the general nature of his political ideology to provide its most adequate scientific description and definition. Results and conclusions. In relation to the general discourse of I.V. Stalin’s political ideology, the most adequate definitions would be “national Bolshevism” for the period of its formation and crystallization and “national-state socialism” for a later period, which characterizes its content in its mature and final version much more accurately. The fundamental conceptual formula of the Russian nationalization of the communist doctrine was the Stalinist idea of the possibility of building socialism in one single country. It became the value foundation of Stalin’s socio-political project, in whose theoretical justification there was a creative synthesis of the teachings of Marxism-Leninism with the traditions of Russian statehood.

Zionism is one of the great agenda of the Jewish nation to rule the world. The movement can be considered far from human values, all of which originate from their ideology contained in the Talmud and Protocols of Zion. This article aims to reveal the basic ideas of Zionism which became their principle in the movement to conquer the world. Through a search of the literature regarding the theme of the discussion and the descriptive-critical analysis method, it is hoped that it can explain the racism side of the Zionist ideology which is clearly contrary to Islamic Islamic theology and human values. This study shows several important points, including: first, Zionism is a movement of the Jewish people to reclaim Baitul Maqdis; second, the Modern Zionism Movement was initiated by Theodor Herzl through the establishment of the Modern State of Palestine; third, the Zionist movement is based on their ideology taken from the Talmud and the Protocols of Zion. The core ideology in these two sources is to assert that the Jews are the best nation in the world, nations other than them are considered not descendants of Adam and even considered animals, God has given the Jews the rights to rule over all nations other than them, and so on; Fourth, the ideology of Zionism if viewed from the perspective of Islamic theology there are many mistakes because basically Allah views all human beings as equal and the only difference is their piety, there are some confusions in the Zionist conception of God, and some of their ideologies have confusion between argument one and argument. other. Therefore, the author concludes that the ideology of Zionism is contrary to the point of view of Islamic theology, besides that it is also not in accordance with the principles of humanity. Zionisme merupakan salah satu agenda besar bangsa Yahudi untuk menguasai dunia. Gerakannya bisa dianggap jauh dari nilai kemanusiaan, di mana semua itu bersumber dari ideologi mereka yang ada dalam Kitab Talmud dan Protocols of Zion. Artikel ini bertujuan untuk mengungkap dasar-dasar pemikiran Zionisme yang menjadi prinsip mereka dalam gerakan menaklukkan dunia. Melalui penelusuran literatur-literatur berkenaan dengan tema pembahasan dan metode deskriptif-analisis kritis diharapkan dapat menjelaskan tentang sisi rasisme ideologi Zionisme yang itu jelas bertentangan dengan teologi Islam dan nilai kemanusiaan. Penelitian ini menunjukkan beberapa poin penting, di antaranya yaitu: pertama, Zionisme merupakan gerakan bangsa Yahudi untuk merebut kembali Baitul Maqdis; kedua, Gerakan Zionisme modern diprakarsai oleh Theodor Herzl melalui pembentukan Negara Modern Palestina; ketiga, Gerakan Zionisme tersebut didasari oleh ideologi mereka yang diambil dari Kitab Talmud dan Protocols of Zion. Inti ideologi dalam kedua sumber ini adalah menegaskan bahwa bangsa Yahudi merupakan bangsa terbaik di dunia, bangsa selain mereka dianggap bukan keturunan Adam bahkan dianggap hewan, Tuhan telah menganugrahi bangsa Yahudi hak-hak untuk menguasai seluruh bangsa selain mereka, dan lain sebagainya; keempat, ideologi Zionisme tersebut jika ditinjau dari perspektif teologi Islam terdapat banyak kesalahan karena pada dasarnya Allah memandang semua umat manusia itu sama dan yang membedakannya hanyalah ketakwaannya, terdapat beberapa kerancuan dalam konsepsi Zionis tentang Tuhan, dan beberapa ideologi mereka memiliki kerancuan antara argumen satu dengan argument lain. Oleh karena itu, penulis menyimpulkan bahwa ideologi Zionisme bertentangan dengan sudut pandang teologi Islam, selain itu juga banyak tidak sesuai dengan prinsip kemanusiaan.

Abstrak: Radikalisme atas nama Islam kembali marak di Dunia Islam kontemporer. Gerakan ini mewujud dalam berbagai aksi kekerasan dan perlawanan terhadap kelompok-kelompok yang dianggap sebagai musuh Islam. Faktor politik, ekonomi, dan ketidakadilan global yang dbungkus dengan sentimen keagamaan menjadi pendorong kebangkitan gerakan ini. Dengan ideologi “jihad”-nya, mereka menyebarkan pahamnya ke berbagai belahan dunia, tak terkecuali Indonesia. Dengan pendekatan sosio-politik, kajian ini hendak mengkaji ideologi gerakan Jihad Global, pengaruh, dan jaringannya di Indonesia. Dari kajian ini terlihat bahwa gerakan Jihad Global memiliki kaitan erat dengan gerakan reformasi Islam yang merupakan respons atas kemunduran Dunia Islam berhadapan dengan Dunia Barat. Pengembangan ide ini oleh Sayyid Quthb membuat gerakan reformasi bukan sekedar sebagai otokritik atas kondisi umat, namun juga mengeras menjadi ideologi perlawanan terhadap sistem yang dianggap menindas. Ideologi perlawanan inilah yang kemudian mengilhami berbagai gerakan ekstrem di Indonesia pasca reformasi. Abstract: Radicalism in the name of Islam is re-emerging in the contemporary Islamic world. This movement manifested in various acts of violence and resistance against “enemies of Islam”. Political, economic, and global injustice factors wrapped in religious sentiments are the driving forces for the revival of this movement. With ideology of "jihad", they spread their understanding to various parts of the world, including Indonesia. With a socio-political approach, this study aims to examine the ideology of the Global Jihad movement, its influence, and its network in Indonesia. From this study, it can be seen that the Global Jihad movement is closely related to the Islamic reform movement which is a response to the decline of the Islamic world in dealing with the West. The development of this idea by Sayyid Qutb made the reform movement not only as an autocritic of the condition of the ummah, but also hardened into an ideology of resistance to a system that is considered oppressive. This ideology of resistance then inspired various extreme movements in post-reform Indonesia.

Although much is known about the motivational underpinnings of authoritarian ideologies, less is known about the underlying mental abilities. In the present study, the relations between right-wing authoritarianism (RWA), social dominance orientation (SDO), and reasoning abilities were investigated. Participants (n = 198) completed measures of reasoning ability (Necessary Arithmetic Operations task, Diagramming Relationships task), RWA, and SDO. Greater RWA was only associated with lower ability to recognize hierarchical relationships; neither RWA nor SDO were associated with general arithmetic reasoning ability. Implications for understanding ideology are discussed.

Literary translation are often faced with problems of equivalence, faithfulness, accuracy, and naturalness. This becomes more complex because the author can choose between many options. Therefore, the author’s choice of style has roles in representing his ideology. This study discusses literary translation by the author herself. This study aims at explaining whether the case of self-translation of the novel The Question of Red (TQOR) and Amba experienced distinction in the lexical category of style markers which led to a potential difference in the self-translator's ideology. A qualitative research method with Fairclough's critical discourse analysis approach was used to reveal the ideological representation. The data sources are an English novel, TQOR, and its Indonesian translation, Amba. The research data are nouns in source text and their translation which represent the self-translator’s ideology. The analysis followed Fairclough’s model of description, interpretation, and explanation. The results show that the ST has more nouns as the lexical style markers than the TT. In both texts, abstract nouns are used more frequently than concrete nouns which offers more affective involvement so that the readers of both texts can feel the experience of the characters rather than giving sensory perceptions to the readers. Penelitian ini membahas kasus penerjemahan karya sastra yang dilakukan oleh pengarangnya sendiri (swaterjemah). Penelitian ini bertujuan melihat apakah kasus swaterjemah novel The Question of Red (TQOR) dan Amba mengalami pergeseran gaya bahasa kategori leksikal yang mengarah pada potensi pergeseran ideologi pengarang-penerjemah. Metode penelitian kualitatif dengan analisis wacana kritis Fairclough digunakan untuk mengungkap ideologi pengarang-penerjemah. Sumber data berupa novel berbahasa Inggris, TQOR, dan terjemahan bahasa Indonesianya, Amba. Data penelitian adalah nomina di dalam TSu dan terjemahannya dalam TSa yang merepresentasikan persepsi ideologis pengarang-penerjemah. Analisis menggunakan model AWK Fairclough, yaitu deskripsi, interpretasi, dan eksplanasi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa TSu memiliki lebih banyak pemarkah gaya bahasa kategori leksikal nomina daripada TSa. Pada kedua teks, nomina abstrak lebih banyak digunakan daripada nomina konkret. Dengan demikian pengarang-penerjemah lebih menawarkan keterlibatan afektif agar pembaca turut merasakan pengalaman tokoh-tokohnya daripada memberikan persepsi indrawi. Abstract. This research delved into the translation of culture-bound terms within the context of the Netflix series Unsolved. The study aimed to elucidate the types of culture-bound terms based on Newmark's classification (1988), describe the translation techniques employed following Molina and Albir's framework (2002), and analyze the underlying translation ideology as per Venuti's perspective (1995). This research used a descriptive qualitative approach by using written text to classify and identify the types of culture-bound terms, translation techniques, and the ideology used to translate culture-bound terms. The findings revealed that there are 87 data of culture-bound terms. The researchers found all 5 types of culture-bound terms namely ecology, material culture, social culture, social organization, and gesture & habit. The findings also revealed that there are 10 translation techniques used by the translator to translate culture-bound terms such as amplification (5 data), borrowing (35 data), calque (4 data), description (5 data), established equivalent (9 data), generalization (8 data), literal (15 data), particularization (4 data), reduction (1 data), and variation (1data). Furthermore, the dominant type of culture-bound terms is social organization. For the translation technique, borrowing becomes the most common technique used by the translator. For the translation ideology, the analysis of the translation results, which predominantly favored the target language, suggests that the translator adhered to a domestication ideology. Depart from the findings, further research is needed to analyze other aspects such as the acceptability and readability of the translation.Keywords: culture-bound terms; film; ideology; translation; translation techniquesAbstrak. Penelitian ini menyelidiki penerjemahan istilah-istilah yang terikat budaya dalam konteks dari serial Netflix Unsolved. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menjelaskan jenis-jenis istilah yang terikat budaya berdasarkan klasifikasi Newmark (1988), mendeskripsikan teknik penerjemahan yang digunakan berdasarkan teori Molina dan Albir (2002), dan menganalisis ideologi penerjemahan berdasarkan perspektif Venuti (1995). Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan deskriptif kualitatif dengan menggunakan teks tertulis untuk mengklasifikasikan dan mengidentifikasi jenis istilah terikat budaya, teknik penerjemahan, dan ideologi yang digunakan untuk menerjemahkan istilah terikat budaya.Temuan mengungkapkan bahwa ada 87 istilah-istilah budaya. Peneliti menemukan 5 jenis istilah yang terikat budaya, yaitu ekologi, budaya material, budaya sosial, organisasi sosial, dan sikap & kebiasaan. Temuan juga mengungkapkan bahwa ada 10 teknik penerjemahan yang digunakan oleh penerjemah untuk menerjemahkan istilah-istilah budaya. Teknik-teknik tersebut adalah amplifikasi, peminjaman, kalque, deskripsi, kesetaraan, generalisasi, literal, partikularisasi, reduksi, dan variasi. Temuan menunjukan bahwa tipe organisasi social menjadi tipe yang paling dominan muncul. Untuk teknik penerjemahan, teknik peminjaman menjadi teknik yang paling sering dipakai oleh penerjemah. Dari segi ideologi penerjemahan, analisis hasil penerjemahan yang mayoritas berpihak pada bahasa sasaran menunjukkan bahwa penerjemah menganut ideologi domestikasi. The poetry book “99 untuk Tuhanku” which was first published in 1983 by Penerbit Pustaka – Perpustakaan Salman ITB Bandung, is the work of Emha Ainun Nadjib (EAN), a well-known writer from Indonesia. The figure of EAN is known for his writings, whether in the form of essays, prose, drama scripts, or poems that are religious, but at the same time critical in looking at the problems of life, including against power in Indonesia. This paper aims to dismantle the EAN Authorial Ideology in poetry book “99 untuk Tuhanku” by using the materialistic literary theory by Terry Eagleton. In dismantling the Authorial Ideology, it will first outline several aspects of external constituents such as the General Mode of Production, Literary Mode of Production, and General Ideology. The research method used is descriptive qualitative. The research results obtained are the Authorial Ideology produced by EAN is humanism-religious and sufism. Meanwhile, the ideology of the New Order regime (General Ideology) is authoritarianism, militarism, and capitalism. The ideology that was contested by EAN, instead of being a resistance ideology for power, has the potential to become an adaptive ideology and potentially perpetuate the dominance of the New Order regime.

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menguraikan strategi produksi yang termaktub pada konstituen ekternal dan struktur ideologi teks yang ada pada konstituen internal dalam novel Perempuan Berkalung Sorban (PBS) karya Abidah El-Khalieqy dengan menggunakan konsep Terry Eagleton. Metode yang digunakan adalah kualitatif deskriptif. Hasil penelitian membuktikan bahwa (1) novel PBS telah melewati proses produksi material eksternal, dengan strategi sebagai berikut; pada masa reformasi, ideologi-ideologi dalam novel PBS telah menjadi buah artikulasi kekuasaaan. Untuk melewati sensor produksi yang ketat, pengarang mengangkat tema-tema romantisisme, humanisme serta pola sosial realisme dalam masyarakat pesantren yang dirangkai secara estetik oleh pengarang dalam PBS layaknya novel-novel populer pada umumnya. (2) Konstituen internal mengungkap struktur ideologi PBS berhubungan dengan insiden-insiden historis yang dimaksudkan sebagai kritik terhadap rezim kekuasaan, khususnya masyarakat komunal pesantren yang identik dengan ideologi patriarki. Ini dilakukan dengan langkah menegosiasikan ideologi subordinatif atau resisten, yakni feminisme, humanism, dan seksualisme terhadap ideologi dominan,ideologi patriarki yang konservatif dan represif pada tindak tanduk perempuan.Kata kunci: struktur ideologi;strategi produksi; Terry Eagelton[Production Strategy and Ideological Structure in Perempuan Berkalung Sorban] This study aims to describe the production strategy in the external constituents and the text’s ideological structure in the internal constituents in the novel Perempuan Berkalung Sorban (PBS), written by Abidah El-Khalieqy by using Terry Eagleton’s concept. The method used is descriptive qualitative. The results of the research prove that (1) the PBS has passed through an external material production process, by following strategies. During the reformation period, the ideologies in the PBS novel had become the articulation of power. To get past the strict censorship of production, the PBS’s author raises the themes of romanticism, humanism and social realism in the pesantren society which are arranged aesthetically by the authors in PBS like popular novels in general. (2) The internal constituents reveal the ideological structure of the PBS in relation to historical incidents which are intended to be a criticism on the regime of power, especially the pe-santren communal society which is identical to the patriarchal ideology. This is done by negotiating challenging ideologies, namely feminism, humanism and sexualism against the dominant ideology which is a patriarchal ideology that is conservative and repressive towards women's behavior.

Therefore, the purpose of our article is to analyze the leading ideological trends in the modern world. The human mind is always focused on the search for meaningful ideas, values and guidelines. Society does not agree with primitive existence and continues to seek respectable higher significant foundations of human existence. That is, they create different ideologies. An ideology is a set of interconnected ideas, ideas and beliefs designed to unite people for the sake of living together and acting together. Today we can distinguish both humane and inhumane ideologies. Timely understanding and separation of humane from antihuman destructive social projects is important. After all, the public consciousness often has every chance to master various inhumane terrorist, extremist and marginal ideologies. Thus, every citizen should know that if the proposed ideology requires people to sacrifice their own lives, health, freedom, personal relationships, family or property, it means that from a legal and moral point of view, such an ideology, which would it did not set attractive goals for society, it is completely unacceptable, inhumane. At the same time, when confronted with humane ideologies, we will immediately be able to see that the proposed system of values and the associated changes will not pose any dangerous material or spiritual threat. In essence, the requirements of humane ideologies can only lead to a variety of ideological, intellectual, organizational and other positive changes. A striking example in this aspect is the ideology of the Enlightenment, which aimed to establish equal rights and freedoms of all people, their comprehensive intellectual and spiritual development through quality basic education and upbringing. One of the modern ideologies is the ideology of mass consumption society. It is this utilitarian system of views and values that has led to the premature depletion of resources and the general deterioration of the environment. The ideology of mass consumption society can negatively affect not only the biosphere but also the spiritual sphere of public life. Thus, such spiritual problems as the loss of meaning in life, the general deterioration of social mood, the widespread spread of pessimistic and depressed dark worldviews, social indifference, aggression, etc. have recently become noticeable. Therefore, in order to successfully solve the above complex problems, humanity must find spiritual strength, wisdom and consolidate. Now is the time to look for and find new positive worldview values. Another current ideological trend is the advancement of a new ideology of virtualization of human life, even after the pandemic is eventually successfully overcome and the objective need for restrictive quarantine measures simply disappears. There is ideological pluralism in modern democracies, but this cannot preclude the adoption of some of the most important values and norms without which no democratic society can exist. Such norms also include some axioms of ethics of communication, which provide the possibility of civilized ideological discourse.

This study focused on the phenomena or dynamics of the struggle for religious ideology that occur in the educational institutions (SMP/MTs and SMA/MA) of Muhammadiyah and Nahdlatul Ulama in East Java. Therefore, this study sought to see the internalization of the religious ideological values of Muhammadiyah and Nahdlatul Ulama in their education systems. Especially, when looking at clashes of religious thought that contain other ideologies (such as transnational (Salafi, Wahabi, and Shia), conservative/traditional, and reformist/modernist ideologies). This study used a qualitative approach and techniques for data collection used participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation studies. The data analysis used the Miles, Huberman, and Saldana model consisting of four stages, namely, data collection, data condensation, data display, and conclusion. This study found that the educational institutions of Muhammadiyah and Nahdlatul Ulama have paradigmatic similarities, namely, ideology is positioned and functionalized as the motive and legitimacy of their educational actions and religious privileges. The expanding opportunities for dissemination and reproduction of other ideologies in their educational institutions are due to the very open nature of their religious understanding (Muhammadiyah has an understanding of Islamic Manhaji, and Nahdlatul Ulama has an understanding of Islamic Mahzabi). Riset ini memfokuskan pada fenomena atau dinamika pergulatan ideologi keagamaan yang terjadi di kelembagaan pendidikan (SMP/MTs dan SMA/MA) Muhammadiyah dan Nahdlatul Ulama di propinsi Jawa Timur. Karenanya, riset ini berupaya melihat internalisasi nilai-nilai ideologis keagamaan Muhammadiyah dan Nahdlatul Ulama dalam sistem kependidikannya. Terutama ketika melihat benturan-benturan pemikiran keagamaan yang memuat ideologi lain (seperti ideologi transnasional (salafi, wahabi, dan syi’ah), konservatif/tradisional, dan reformis/modernis). Riset ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan teknik pengumpulan data memakai observasi partisipasi, wawancara mendalam; dan studi dokumentasi. Analisis datanya memakai model Miles, Huberman, dan Saldana yang terdiri dari empat tahap, yaitu: koleksi data, kondensasi data, display data, dan kesimpulan. Riset ini menemukan, kelembagaan pendidikan Muhammadiyah dan Nahdlatul Ulama memiliki persamaan paradigmatik, yaitu: ideologi diposisikan dan difungsionalisasikan sebagai motif serta legitimasi tindakan kependidikan dan privelege keberagamaan mereka. Pembentangan peluang diseminasi dan reproduksi ideologi lain di kelembagaan pendidikan mereka, disebabkan sifat pemahaman keagamaan mereka yang sangat terbuka (Muhammadiyah berpahaman Islam Manhaji, dan Nahdlatul Ulama memiliki pemahaman Islam mazhabi).

It is a commonplace of our recent past that functionalism and the second system of Talcott Parsons (a distinctive version of functionalism) rose to power or attained hegemony in American sociology shortly after the end of World War II, retained this hegemony through the 1950s and 1960s, and lost a near-exclusive hold in the early 1970s when many of the younger sociologists abandoned a holist or transindividual perspective in favor of an interpersonal face-to-face context (associated with the social psychological concerns of symbolic interaction and ethnomethodology). What accounts for this? Why did functionalism and the second system of Parsons capture the intellectual allegiance of so many intelligent men and women in American sociology precisely at the end of World War II? What explains the almost total hegemony of this persuasion of general theory for more than two decades? Finally, what accounts for the fact that many younger sociologists withdrew their allegiance to these views at the end of the 1960s or early 1970s?

The recent history of Russian state building is directly connected with numerous, and not always successful, attempts to formulate state ideology. Such attempts at «ideological search» intensified with the adoption of amendments to the Constitution of Russia in 2020. Despite a number of scientific works devoted to the problems of the formation of state ideology, today in the Russian legal doctrine the polarity of opinions regarding the content of state, national, constitutional ideology has not been eliminated, which, in turn, affects the process of development of the state and law. The purpose of this work is to identify the reasons for the consolidation in Part 2 of Article 13 of the Constitution of the Russian Federation of the prohibition on the establishment of any ideology as state or mandatory. It also aims to formulate a number of terms related to the research topic, resolve the competition between state ideology, national, constitutional and ideology of the ruling group.The paper uses such methods of scientific research as synthesis, abstraction, generalization. The author analyses the works of E. Y. Barkhatova, V. I. Yakunin, P. A. Astaficheva, N. S. Bondar, E. E. Barinov, V. V. Lazarev, B. S. Ebzeeva, and other authors.The results of the study consist in the formulation of the author’s interpretation of a number of terms: national ideology; state ideology; constitutional ideology; ideology of the ruling group. The interrelation of the state ideology and the national ideology, as well as the ideology of the ruling group, is shown. Separately, the principles of the formation of national ideology are disclosed, the features of the state ideology in the USSR are shown. The results of the research can be used in the science of constitutional law, the general theory of state and law, political science.

The purpose of the article is to analyze the relationship between the phenomenon of conscience and ideology. The work uses psychoanalytic and cultural-historical approaches, the methods of critical philosophical reflection and dialectical logic are applied. Conscience is viewed as a person’s ability to critically assess his or her thoughts and actions in accordance with personal ideas about what should be done. At the same time, attention is focused on the fact that feelings of shame and conscience are inherent in all people, since they are fundamental in the mechanisms of human consciousness and self-consciousness. Actually, their presence acts as one of the main features which distinguish humans from other animals. In turn, ideas about what is due are dynamic, since they are fixed by specific actors of the cultural and historical process, who are individuals who have determined their understanding of what is due, values and ways to achieve them, who have sufficient will to convince others that their guidelines are correct. But not all ideals set a progressive, humanistic direction. At the same time, the work emphasizes that no personal ideas about what should be done can take the form of a general ideology if they do not reflect, to one degree or another, the material interests of the most part of society. At the same time, the logic of the study leads to the conclusion that the absence of a common ideology that promotes humanistic values aggravates the moral disorientation of representatives of modern Russian society, reducing the level of self-control provided by conscience.

The purpose of this study is to reveal that 'language ideology' has sufficient educational value to be applied to discriminatory language education. Effective education on discriminatory languages is a task of the times, so it is necessary to discuss the appropriate direction of discriminatory language education. In addition, discriminatory language education using language ideology will solidify the value of grammar education. This paper argues that the theory of language ideology, which is mainly studied in sociolinguistics and linguistic anthropology, should be actively used when setting the direction of education on discriminatory languages. In order to reveal a reasonable basis for this, this paper first reveals through a review of previous studies that language choice according to language ideology effectively reveals individual identity, and uses language ideology to suggest the direction of education in discriminatory languages.

The DebateQuestion 1: Various commentators have frequently invoked the importance of moderate Muslims and the role that they can play in fighting extremism in the Muslim world. But it is not clear who is a moderate Muslim. The recent cancellation of Tariq Ramadan’s visa to the United States, the raids on several American Muslim organizations, and the near marginalization of mainstream American Muslims in North America pose the following question: If moderate Muslims are critical to an American victory in the war on terror, then why does the American government frequently take steps that undermine moderate Muslims? Perhaps there is a lack of clarity about who the moderate Muslims are. In your view, who are these moderate Muslims and what are their beliefs and politics? AC: I would like to say from the outset that I am neither a Muslim nor a sociologist. Therefore, my remarks should be taken as those of an interested and sympathetic outsider. I do not believe at all that the American government “undermines” moderate Muslims. The problem is more complicated. Many American officials abhor engagement in religion or the politics of religion. They believe that the American Constitution separates religion and state and does not allow them to make distinctions when it comes to different interpretations of Islam. For some of them, Salafiya Islam is as good as Sufi Islam. Others do not have a sufficient knowledge base to sort out the moderates from the radicals, identify the retrograde fundamentalists, or recognize modernizers who want political Islam to dominate. This is wrong. Radical ideologies have to do more with politics and warfare than religion, and, in some extreme cases, should not enjoy the constitutional protections of freedom of religion or free speech. There is a difference between propagating a faith and disseminating hatred, violence, or murder. The latter is an abuse and exploitation of faith for political ends, and should be treated as such. For example, the racist Aryan Nation churches were prosecuted and bankrupted by American NGOs and the American government. One of the problems is that the American government allows radical Muslims who support terrorism to operate with impunity in the United States and around the world, and does very little to support moderate Muslims, especially in the conflict zones. To me, moderate Muslims are those who do not view the “greater jihad” either as a pillar of faith or as a predominant dimension thereof. A moderate is one who is searching for a dialogue and a compromise with people who adhere to other interpretations of the Qur’an, and with those who are not Muslim. Amoderate Sunni, for example, will not support terror attacks on Shi`ahs or Sufis, or on Christians, Jews, or Hindus. Moderate Muslims respect the right of individuals to disagree, to worship Allah the way they chose, or not to worship – and even not to believe. Amoderate Muslim is one who is willing to bring his or her brother or sister to faith by love and logic, not by mortal threats or force of arms. Amoderate Muslim decries suicide bombings and terrorist “operations,” and abhors those clerics who indoctrinate toward, bless, and support such atrocities. The list of moderate Muslims is too long to give all or even a part of it here. Shaykh Muhammad Hisham Kabbani (chairman of the Islamic Supreme Council of America) and Sheikh Abdul Hadi Palazzi (secretarygeneral of the Rome-based Italian Muslim Association) come to mind. Ayatollah Ali Sistani may be a moderate, but I need to read more of his teachings. As the Wahhabi attacks against the Shi`ah escalate, Shi`i clerics and leaders are beginning to speak up. Examples include Sheikh Agha Jafri, a Westchester-based Pakistani Shi`ah who heads an organization called the Society for Humanity and Islam in America, and Tashbih Sayyed, a California-based Pakistani who serves as president of the Council for Democracy and Tolerance. I admire the bravery of Amina Wadud, a female professor of Islamic studies at Virginia Commonwealth University who led a mixed-gender Friday Islamic prayer service, according to Mona Eltahawy’s op-ed piece in The Washington Post on Friday, March 18, 2005 (“A Prayer Toward Equality”). Another brave woman is the co-founder of the Progressive Muslim Union of America, Sarah Eltantawi. And the whole world is proud of the achievements of Judge Shirin Ebadi, the Iranian human rights lawyer who was awarded the Nobel peace prize in 2003. There is a problem with the first question, however. It contains several assumptions that are debatable, to say the least, if not outright false. First, it assumes that Tariq Ramadan is a “moderate.” Nevertheless, there is a near-consensus that Ramadan, while calling for ijtihad, is a supporter of the Egyptian Ikhwan al-Muslimin [the Muslim Brotherhood] and comes from that tradition [he is the grandson of its founder, Hasan al-Banna]. He also expressed support for Yusuf al-Qaradawi (and all he stands for) on a BBC TVprogram, and is viewed as an anti-Semite. He also rationalizes the murder of children, though apparently that does not preclude the European Social Forum from inviting him to be a member. He and Hasan al-Turabi, the founder of the Islamic state in Sudan, have exchanged compliments. There are numerous reports in the media, quoting intelligence sources and ex-terrorists, that Ramadan associates with the most radical circles, including terrorists. In its decision to ban Ramadan, the United States Department of Homeland Security was guided by a number of issues, some of them reported in the media and others classified. This is sufficient for me to believe that Ramadan may be a security risk who, in the post-9/11 environment, could reasonably be banned from entering the United States.1 Second, the raids on “American Muslim organizations” are, in fact, a part of law enforcement operations. Some of these steps have had to do with investigations of terrorist activities, such as the alleged Libyan conspiracy to assassinate Crown Prince Abdullah of Saudi Arabia. Others focused on American Islamist organizations that were funding the terrorist activities of groups on the State Department’s terrorism watch list, such as Hamas. To say that these criminal investigations are targeting moderate Islam is like saying that investigating pedophile priests undermines freedom of religion in the United States. Finally, American Muslims are hardly marginalized. They enjoy unencumbered religious life and support numerous non-governmental organizations that often take positions highly critical of domestic and foreign policy – something that is often not the case in their countries of origin. There is no job discrimination – some senior Bush Administration officials, such as Elias A. Zerhouni, head of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), are Muslims. American presidents have congratulated Muslims on religious holidays and often invite Muslim clergymen to important state functions, such as the funeral of former president Ronald Reagan.
