Annotation:

Over the past decade a comprehensive, semiquantitative theoretical scenario for the final evolutionary stages of low and intermediate mass stars has been progressively elaborated and refined. It concerns the envelope ejection terminating the Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) phase, the AGB to Planetary Nebula (PN) transition, the fading and possible rejuvenation of PN nuclei, the formation processes of hydrogen-deficient stars, and the final production of white dwarfs (WD) of the DA and non-DA varieties (Renzini 1979, 1981a, 1981b, 1982, 1983, Iben & Renzini 1983, Iben et al. 1983, Iben 1984, 1985, 1987, Iben & Tutukov 1984, Iben & MacDonald 1985, 1986). In developing this scenario several important results of stellar evolution and hydrodynamical calculations have been incorporated, including in particular those of Paczynski (1971), Wood (1974), Härm & Schwarzschild (1975), Schönberner (1979, 1983), and Tuchman, Sack & Barkat (1979).

Annotation:

The present investigation reports the results of a content analysis of U.S. newspaper portrayals of the 1991 earthquake prediction by Dr. Iben Browning. Results suggest that journalists wrote stories which readers may have interpreted as advocating a belief in Browning's prediction. Specifically, news stories were found to be more subjective than objective, and more supportive than critical, of both Iben Browning and his theory.

Ever since the pioneering work of Schönberner (1979, A&A, 79, 108) and Iben (1984, ApJ, 277, 333) who showed that the evolution of post-AGB remnants might be affected by late thermal pulses of the helium-burning shell, resulting in a temporary growth of these objects to red giant dimensions, many attempts were made to explain a number of puzzling objects, among them the well-known variable central star FG Sge as well as the R CrB and PG 1159 stars, by this so-called “born-again AGB” scenario (Iben et al. 1983, ApJ, 264, 605; Iben & MacDonald 1995, in: White Dwarfs, Springer, p. 48). However, it is still not clear if the frequency of occurrence of such events is high enough as to be consistent with the number of born-again candidates. This is due to the very short evolutionary timescales during the pulse and the character of the post-pulse evolution which resembles the first post-AGB phase and makes it difficult for an observer to distinguish such objects from “normal” central stars.

The hypothesis that Type I supernova explosions originate in binary stars, in which the secondary overflows its Roche lobe and causes a white dwarf primary to pass a critical threshold for dynamical collapse, has gained in popularity over the last decade and a half (Truran and Cameron 1971; Whelan and Iben 1973; Wheeler 1982). During this period attention has also focussed on double-degenerate binary precursors of such systems, in which gravitational radiation of orbital angular momentum causes two white dwarf stars to spiral slowly together until the less massive of the stars begins to overflow its Roche lobe (Tutukov and Yungelson 1979; Webbink 1979; Iben and Tutukov 1984; Paczyński 1985). Cameron and Iben (1986) discussed the stability of such systems as the threshold of Roche lobe overflow was approached and for low mass ratios in which gravitational radiation can maintain a low rate of such overflow. Benz, Bowers, Cameron, and Press (1988, hereafter BBCP) computed the actual merging of a binary system composed of a 1.2M© primary and a 0.9M© secondary using a fully three-dimensional SPH code. Their simulation did not include the effect of nuclear energy release despite the fact that the temperature in the accretion shock reached the carbon ignition threshold, and therefore their conclusions about the structure of the merged object remained uncertain.

Our understanding of the evolution of Central Stars of Planetary Nebulae (CPN) has made considerable progress during the last years. This was possible since consistent computations through the asymptotic giant branch (AGB), with thermal pulses and (in some cases) mass loss taken into account, became available (Schönberner, 1979, 1983; Kovetz and Harpaz, 1981; Harpaz and Kovetz, 1981; Iben, 1982, 1984; Wood and Faulkner, 1986). It turned out that the evolution depends very sensitively on the inital conditions on the AGB. More precisely, the evolution of an AGB remnant is a function of the phase of the thermal-pulse cycle during which this remnant was created on the tip of the AGB by the planetary-nebula (PN) formation process (Iben, 1984, 1987). This was first shown by Schönberner (1979), and then fully explored by Iben (1984). In short, two major modes of PAGB evolution to the white dwarf stage are possible, according to the two main phases of a thermally pulsing AGB star: the hydrogen-burning or helium-burning mode. If, for instance, the PN formation, i.e. the removal of the stellar envelope by mass loss, happens during a luminosity peak that follows a thermal pulse of the helium-burning shell, the remnant leaves the AGB while still burning helium as the main energy supplier (Härm and Schwarzschild, 1975). On the other hand, PN formation may also occur during the quiescent hydrogen-burning phase on the AGB, and the remnant continues then to burn mainly hydrogen on its way to becoming a white dwarf.

Examination of 227 samples of milk and dairy products for Listeria monocytogenes showed that raw milk and some Moroccan traditionally made dairy products such as Iben and raib (fermented milks) and jben (fresh cheese) were contaminated with this pathogen. L. monocytogenes was the only Listeria species isolated except in one case in which it was associated with Listeria innocua. Pasteurized milk, fresh cream, and fresh and ripened cheeses (industrially made) were free from L. monocytogenes.

This paper reports results of a telephone survey in the St. Louis metropolitan area assessing household earthquake awareness and preparedness in November 1997. This survey extends time-series data on awareness and preparedness in the area, which I obtained from earlier surveys conducted in October 1990, February 1991, July 1992, and May 1993. The previous surveys constitute the only time-series data assessing the effects of a pseudo-scientific earthquake prediction (in this case, one made by the late Iben Browning) with measurement of attitudes and beliefs both before and after disconfirmation of the prediction. In general, the new survey shows that both the perceived risk of a damaging earthquake and levels of household preparedness in the region have undergone steady, long-term declines since 1991. There has also been some decline in concern about earthquake risk since 1992. Nonetheless, there has been some lasting effect of preparation actions taken in response to Iben Browning's 1990 pseudoscientific earthquake prediction. For all three preparedness actions for which data are available from 1990 through 1997, the 1997 data indicate a higher level of preparedness than was observed in October 1990, two months before the date on which Browning said a damaging earthquake was likely. And the level of preparedness is much higher than was observed in the larger New Madrid region in another survey taken in 1987.

We infer that detached binary white dwarfs with orbital periods of a few hours exist because we observe both their progenitors and their descendents. The binary LB 3459 has an orbital period of 6.3 hr and contains a pair of hot subdwarfs that will eventually cool to become white dwarfs (Kilkenny, Hill, and Penfold 1981). L870-2 is a pair of white dwarfs and, given enough time, its 1.55 d orbital period will decay to shorter periods (Saffer, Liebert, and Olszewski 1988). GP Com, AM CVn, V803 Cen, and PG1346+082 are interacting binary white dwarfs with orbital periods between 1051 s for AM CVn and 46.5 min for GP Com (Nather, Robinson, and Stover 1981; Solheim et al. 1984; Wood et al. 1987; O’Donoghue and Kilkenny 1988). These ultrashort period systems must be descendents of detached pairs of white dwarfs. We also expect short-period binary white dwarfs to exist for theoretical reasons. All calculations of the evolution of binary stars show that main-sequence binaries can evolve to binary white dwarfs (e.g., Iben and Tutukov 1984). Among Population I stars, 1/2 to 2/3 of all main-sequence stars are binaries and about 20% of these binaries should become double white dwarfs with short orbital periods (Abt 1983, Iben and Tutukov 1986). Thus, about 1/10 of all white dwarfs could be close binaries (Paczynski 1985). Nevertheless, no detached binary white dwarfs with extremely short periods have yet been found.

Spectroscopic analyses of hot pre-white dwarfs, i.e. subluminous O and B stars, are presented. In the B-type stars, the resulting abundance patterns are indicative of atmospheric diffusion (gravitational settling). Amongst the O-type subdwarfs, a new group of comparatively luminous stars is identified. Their position in the HR-diagram suggests that, unlike the “classical” sdOs, they are in a post-AGB stage of evolution. Spectroscopic evidence is presented showing that the born-again post-AGB star scenario of Iben et al. (1983) can explain their origin.

Abstract The central United States and the nation experienced the effects of a false, pseudoscientific, unofficial prediction in 1990. The lack of a timely, public rebuttal of the Iben Browning earthquake prediction led to tremendous unnecessary efforts by local, state, and federal governments to respond to the public's demand for information about the validity of the prediction and how to prepare for the predicted earthquake. The effort was costly both in terms of money and diversion of staff from other necessary services. Although the prediction may have increased the level of earthquake awareness and preparedness in the central U.S., that awareness and preparedness may have been forged at the expense of scientific and government credibility.

It is now accepted without any doubts that the central stars of Planetary Nebulae (CPN) are rapidly evolving objects in the transition from the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) to the white-dwarf regime. After the pioneering study of Paczyński (1971) it has been demonstrated by Schönberner (1981) that Paczyński's calculations are too crude for the understanding of post-AGB evolution because the latter depends very sensitively on the detailed internal stellar structure, i.e. on the past AGB evolution. More precisely, the evolution of an AGB remnant is a function of the thermal-pulse cycle phase ϕ during which this remnant has been created by the planetary-nebula (PN) formation process. Det undersøges, om der eksisterer fællestræk, som kan danne grundlag for systematisering af processen. Fokus er arkivering af søgeprotokoller med henblik på genbrug, graden af søgeassistance, sygeplejens egne søgeord og oversættelse til databasernes vokabularer. Gennem 10 strukturerede kvalitative interviews belyses informationsspecialisters søgeadfærd, og der analyseres søgestrategier indsamlet af interview per sonerne. På baggrund af interview og søgeprotokoller kan det konkluderes, at der på nogle punkter findes fælles træk ved sygeplejefaglig litteratursøgning. Dog træder forskellene i højere grad frem i vores afdækning, og vi finder derfor ikke, at der er tilstrækkelig grundlag for at udarbejde en systematiseret model for søgeprocessen. I stedet foreslås at arkivere søgninger på termniveau med henblik på genanvendelse.

Background: Bacterial meningitis is a severe infectious disease that affects the central nervous system and can result in high mortality rates and neurological complications. In neonates, meningitis is mainly caused by neonatal meningitis Escherichia coli (NMEC), which invades the intestine, leading to hematogenous spreadand potential bacterial meningitis through blood-brain barrier. Previous studies indicated that the ability of NMEC to adhere and invade is associated with biofilm formation and a deficiency in ibeA may result in decreased virulence and biofilm-forming ability of avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC). Furthermore, the ibeA gene is positioned downstream of ibeR. Our previous studies have shown that ibeR and ibeA genes can both regulate the virulence and relevant phenotypes in E. coli K1. However, the effects of ibeR and ibeA on the biofilm formation and invasion of K1 strain remain to be further studied. Recent studies suggest that indole may act as a signaling molecule to regulate the expression of adhesion and biofilm-promoting factors in E. coli. However, the mechanism by which indole affects biofilms is still unclear. This study aimed to investigate the mechanism of ibeA inhibition of indole-induced NMEC invasion and biofilm formation. Methods: The viability and growth of the wild strain E44 and ibeA-deletion mutant strain ZD1 were assessed by MTT cell proliferation assay kit (Coolaber). The absorbance values were measured at 490 nm and 540 nm by ELISA. The invasion activities and the biofilm formation ability of E44 and ZD1 were detected in vitro studies. We conducted a cell invasion test using the Human Brain Microvascular Endothelial Cells (HBMEC) model. The ability to form a biofilm was measured at 600 nm using a specific biofilm formation index. Biofilm phenotypic was observed by an confocal laser-scanning microscope(Olympus FV-1000, Japan). Then, we used indole as a regulatory agency to compare its biofilm inhibitory efficacy between E44 and ibeR-deletion mutant strain BR2. The experimental data were analyzed using the SPSS 19.0 statistical package. A statistically significant difference was indicated by P<0.05. Results: No difference was found in bacterial growth between the E. coli strains E44 and ZD1. The biofilm formation and HBMECs invasion of ZD1 was significantly lower than that of E44. After treatment with 0.5mM indole, the biofilm formation ability and the ibeA protein expressions of E44 were significantly inhibited. However, indole at different concentrations had no obvious inhibition on BR2 biofilm formation and the ibeA protein expressions. Conclusion: In summary, the study found that ibeA had a significant regulatory effect on HBMECs invasion and biofilm formation of NMEC, which may inhibit by indole via regulating ibeA through ibeR. Abstract In 2020, Trapholt (a Danish museum of modern art, craft and design) and textile designer Iben Høj launched a grand collaborative art project involving almost 800 embroiderers. The project, named Stitches Beyond Borders, was part of the centenary celebratrions of Denmark’s reunification with Southern Jutland, and participants were asked to embroider their personal vision of borders. By using a mixed method approach we firstly analyse how Stitches Beyond Borders, as a collaborative art project, created a strong sense of community and cultivated creative agency. Secondly, we focus on the discursive nature of the female public created by the art project. Taking into account the rich and complex history of embroidery as an underestimated female activity tied to repressive power mechanisms, we discuss whether the project ends up merely (re)creating an innocuous female public by favouring a personal take on the border theme.

Humour detection from sentences has been an interesting and challenging task in the last few years. In attempts to highlight humour detection, most research was conducted using traditional approaches of embedding, e.g., Word2Vec or Glove. Recently BERT sentence embedding has also been used for this task. In this paper, we propose a framework for humour detection in short texts taken from news headlines. Our proposed framework (IBEN) attempts to extract information from written text via the use of different layers of BERT. After several trials, weights were assigned to different layers of the BERT model. The extracted information was then sent to a Bi-GRU neural network as an embedding matrix. We utilized the properties of some external embedding models. A multi-kernel convolution in our neural network was also employed to extract higher-level sentence representations. This framework performed very well on the task of humour detection.

Są to: rozumienie postaci jako „miejsca par excellence poetyckiego” (Ubersfeld) oraz postrzeganie technik aktora jako „technik tożsamości ciała-ducha indywidualnego i niepowtarzalnego” (Barba) Ze wzajemnej interferencji tych spojrzeń „rodzą się” do scenicznego bytu figury ludzkiej wyobraźni w przedstawieniach Barby. Z pozoru paradoksalne i nonsensowne powstają, podobnie jak marzenia senne według Junga, z nieznanej części duszy. Przykładów do prowadzonych analiz dostarczają wybrane postaci wykreowane przez aktorki Odin Teatret: Iben Nagel Rasmussen (Biały Anioł, Szaman, niema Kattrin, Trickster), Robertę Carreri (Geronimo) i Julię Varley (Doña Musica, Kristen Hastrup, Pan Orzeszek, Dedal).

ABSTRACT IbeA in extraintestinal pathogenic Escherichia coli (ExPEC) strains was previously described for its role in invasion. Here we investigated the role of IbeA and IbeT, encoded by a gene located downstream of ibeA, in the adhesion of the avian ExPEC strain BEN2908 to human brain microvascular endothelial cells (HBMEC). The ΔibeA mutant was less adhesive to HBMEC than the wild-type strain BEN2908 was. Because strain BEN2908 also expresses type 1 fimbriae, we measured the adhesion specifically due to IbeA by comparing the adhesive properties of a Δfim derivative of strain BEN2908 to those of a double Δfim ΔibeA mutant. No differences were observed, indicating that the reduction of adhesion in BEN2908 ΔibeA could be due to a decrease in type 1 fimbria expression. We indeed showed that the decreased adhesion of BEN2908 ΔibeA was correlated with a decrease in type 1 fimbria expression. Accordingly, more bacteria had a fim promoter orientated in the off position in a culture of BEN2908 ΔibeA than in a culture of BEN2908. Expression of fimB and fimE, two genes encoding recombinases participating in controlling the orientation of the fim promoter, was decreased in BEN2908 ΔibeA. A reduction of type 1 fimbria expression due to a preferential orientation of the fim promoter in the off position was also seen in an ibeT mutant of strain BEN2908. We finally suggest a role for IbeA and IbeT in modulating the expression of type 1 fimbriae through an as yet unknown mechanism.

The generally accepted evolutionary scenario for cataclysmic variables (CVs) is common envelope (CE) evolution (Iben & Livio 1993) proposed by Paczyñski (1976). The secondary spirals towards the giant’s compact core converting orbital energy into kinetic energy of the giant’s envelope and the envelope is ejected. The dynamics of the red dwarf and red giant envelope interaction have been studied by several groups (Livio & Soker 1988; Taam & Bodenheimer 1991). After the ejection of the red giant envelope the post common envelope detached binaries (PCEBs) are formed. These can be divided into three groups:• Hot subdwarf with a red dwarf star inside a planetary nebula.• Hot subdwarf with a red dwarf star without a planetary nebula.• Hot white dwarf with a red dwarf star without a planetary nebula. Next, due to angular momentum loss by magnetic braking and/or gravitational radiation, the red dwarf component fills its Roche lobe and a cataclysmic variable is formed.

A New Mexico climatologist, Iben Browning, forecast an even chance that a major earthquake would strike the New Madrid fault on or around December 3, 1990. The extended media coverage associated with this “projection “ may have generated the most acute public awareness of earthquake hazards in the mid-continental United States in recent memory. In order to investigate what effect situational and dispositional factors had on cognitive and affective reactions to Browning's “projection, “ 428 college students residing in the area of Southeast Missouri predicted to be affected by an earthquake on the New Madrid fault were administered an extensive questionnaire. The questionnaire determined how situational factors (sociodemographic characteristics, prior earthquake experience, and impact attributed by the respondents to exposure to media sources of information) and dispositional factors (personality characteristics) were related to their reactions towards Browning's “projection. “ The results indicated ttat the cognitive and affective reactions to an earthquake prediction assessed in this study can be partially predicted from a combination of situational, but not dispositional, factors.

His public dialogue with NTQ co-editor Maria Shevtsova and members of the audience provides fresh insight into the workings of one of the most influential figures, and one of the most widely known non-official theatre collectives, of the late twentieth century. The conversation took place on 31 October 2005 at Goldsmiths College, University of London, during the Odin's UK tour (as documented in the ‘Reports and Announcements’ section of NTQ 86), and included questions from the audience and concluding words from Odin performer Iben Nagel Rasmussen, who had performed White as Jasmin earlier in the evening. AbstractLos Alamos National Laboratory has calculated a new generation of radiative opacities (OPLIB data using the ATOMIC code) for elements with atomic number Z = 1-30 with improved physics input, updated atomic data, and finer temperature grid to replace the Los Alamos LEDCOP opacities released in the year 2000. We calculate the evolution of standard solar models including these new opacities, and compare with models evolved using the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory OPAL opacities (Iglesias & Rogers 1996). We use the solar abundance mixture of Asplund et al. 2009. The Los Alamos ATOMIC opacities (Colgan et al. 2013a, 2013b, 2015) have steeper opacity derivatives than those of OPAL for temperatures and densities of the solar interior radiative zone. We compare the calculated nonadiabatic solar oscillation frequencies and solar interior sound speed to observed frequencies and helioseismic inferences. The calculated sound-speed profiles are similar for models evolved using either the updated Iben evolution code (see Guzik & Mussack 2010), or the MESA evolution code (Paxton et al. 2015). The LANL ATOMIC opacities partially mitigate the ‘solar abundance problem’.

The track shown as a continuous line is the one shown in Wood and Faulkner (1987) and corresponds to α = 2.5, while the track shown as a dotted line results from a slightly different treatment of semi-convection on the main-sequence and to α = 1.

The Iben Browning pseudoscientific forecast of a major earthquake in the New Madrid seismic zone around December 3, 1990, provoked considerable talk and some concern around the midwest, and especially in the St. Louis area. Much local media attention focused on the state of earthquake preparedness in the area, and a proactive approach to preparedness was advocated for residents and businesses alike. This paper describes the state of earthquake preparedness among twenty older industrial plants located along the banks of the Mississippi River as reported by plant safety officers. While most safety officers were skeptical of Browning's forecast, most also believed that a major earthquake would hit the St. Louis area in the not too distant future. Nevertheless, earthquake preparedness was minimal or nonexistent at most of the plants, and a follow-up survey two years later showed little change in this state of affairs. Also unchanged was the striking lack of communication between these businesses and emergency management officials. These and other findings are discussed in light of proactive earthquake mitigation efforts.

The current study aimed to detect the prevalence of Streptococcus pneumoniae by identifying Pneumolysin and determining the gene (ply) using polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The study aimed to highlight the isolation and identification of Streptococcus pneumoniae using morphological, biochemical and Vitek, as well as investigation about pneumolysin phenotypically and molecularly through ply gene and sent the PCR products to sequencing by sanger method. Fifty sputum specimens were collected from patients at AL Salam Hospital, Iben Sina/ Mosul/ Iraq, from August 2021 to March 2022. The isolated bacteria were identified depending on morphology and biochemical properties; Vitek and the ply gene were detected by PCR technique. Five isolates of Streptococcus pneumoniae showed the ability to produce pneumolysin when tested by a double agar layer. When PCR reaction was performed on the Streptococcus pneumoniae pneumolysin gene, the results on gel electrophoresis showed three bands with 238 bp, and the ratio of the presence of the ply gene was 80%. PCR products were then submitted to sequencing by the Sanger method, and the ply sequencing result showed Point mutations that nucleotide and amino acid change with location. We have previously described the cloning and molecular characterization of a determinant, ibeA (also called ibe10), from the chromosome of an invasive cerebrospinal fluid isolate of E. coli K1 strain RS218 (O18:K1:H7). Here we report the identification of another chromosomal locus, ibeB, which allows RS218 to invade brain microvascular endothelial cells (BMEC). The noninvasive TnphoA mutant 7A-33 exhibited <1% the invasive ability of the parent strain in vitro in BMEC and was significantly less invasive in the central nervous system in the newborn rat model of hematogenousE. coli meningitis than the parent strain. The TnphoA insert with flanking sequences was cloned and sequenced. A 1,383-nucleotide open reading frame (ORF) encoding a 50-kDa protein was identified and termed ibeB. This ORF was found to be 97% identical to a gene encoding a 50-kDa hypothetical protein (p77211) and located in the 13-min region of the E. coli K-12 genome. However, no homology was observed between ibeB and other known invasion genes when DNA and protein databases in GenBank were searched. Like the TnphoA insertion mutant 7A-33, an isogenic ibeBdeletion mutant (IB7D5) was unable to invade BMEC. A 7.0-kb locus containing ibeB was isolated from a LambdaGEM-12 genomic library of E. coli RS218 and subcloned into a pBluescript KS vector (pKS7-7B). pKS7-7B was capable of completely restoring the BMEC invasion of the noninvasive TnphoA mutant 7A-33 and the ibeB deletion mutant IB7D5 to the level of the parent strain. More importantly, the ibeB deletion mutant IB7D5 was fully complemented by pFN476 carrying the ibeB ORF (pFN7C), indicating thatibeB is required for E. coli K1 invasion of BMEC. Taken together, these findings indicate that severalE. coli determinants, including ibeA andibeB, contribute to crossing of the blood-brain barrier.
