Brucellosis has become a zoonotic disease that received attention in efforts to prevent and eradicate strategic infectious animal diseases in Indonesia. Brucellosis can be detected early by the rose bengal test (RBT), followed by complement fixation test (CFT) and by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The aims of this research was to study the indirect enzyme linked immunosorbent assay test (I-ELISA) as an alternative test for detecting brucellosis in dairy cattle. The method was used by conducting tests of RBT, CFT, I-ELISA and commercial I-ELISA to test brucellosis. The test results were calculated sensitivity and specificity, as well as analyzed by calculating the kappa value. The method was used by conducting tests of RBT, CFT, I-ELISA and commercial I-ELISA to test brucellosis. The test results were calculated for sensitivity and specificity, as well as analyzed by calculating the Kappa statistical value. The results of the sensitivity and specificity calculation showed that the indirect enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (I-ELISA) test developed a higher sensitivity (100%) compared to RBT test (93.75%) and commercial I-ELISA (93.75%). The developed I-ELISA specificity (74.68%) was still lower than RBT (89.87%), but higher than commercial I-ELISA (70.52%). The calculation of the statistical value of kappa RBT with CFT showed the kappa value 0.7120 which meaned it had a good agreement, commercial I-ELISA with CFT showed kappa value 0.6165 which meaned it had good suitability, whereas I-ELISA developed with CFT showed kappa value 0.4984 which meaned having a moderate agreement. In conclusion, the indirect enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (I-ELISA) which had been developed had low specificity, but the sensitivity was the highest compared to the commercial I-ELISA test and RBT, so this test was appropriate to be used as a screening test, especially in dairy cows movement into brucellosis-free areas or regions.

Background. Counterfactual thinking (CFT) refers to the process of reflecting on an event and changing aspects of it so as to alter the eventual outcome. Such thinking appears frequent in survivors of trauma (e.g. ‘If only I had stayed at home then I wouldn't have had the accident’), but has received little systematic empirical investigation. Four studies examined the nature of CFT in both trauma survivors and non-traumatized controls.Method. Participants generated CFT to their own trauma or to written scenarios.Results. Three key findings emerged. Firstly, trauma survivors overwhelmingly produced CFT that mutated aspects of their own behaviour during the traumatic event (self-referent CFT) and that improved the event's outcome (upward CFT; Studies 1 and 2). Secondly, self-referent CFT style in trauma survivors was generalized to non-autobiographical scenarios and was independent of how much control the protagonist in the scenarios had over the outcome. In contrast, never-traumatized controls tended to generate more self-referent CFT to scenarios where the protagonists had some control than to scenarios where the protagonist had little control (Study 3). Thirdly, this self-referent, upward CFT style of trauma survivors was not related to frequency of post-traumatic stress symptoms (Studies 1 and 3) or Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) caseness (Study 2).Conclusions. These results are interpreted in terms of a self-referent, upward CFT style that is normative following trauma for all survivors, regardless of levels of trauma-related distress, and that is applied to any negative events that are encountered.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to compare the acute effects of different types (treadmill vs. cycle) of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise on cerebral blood flow and cognitive function in young adults.METHODS: By a randomized crossover study design, ten participants were initially assigned to either treadmill exercise (TE; n=5) or cycle ergometer exercise (CE; n=5) and then they performed the other with seven-day wash-out period. Both exercises were implemented at the target heart rate corresponding to 70% of heart rate reserve for 30 minutes. Cognitive function was assessed by the Stroop Color-Word test at pre- and post-exercise. Cerebral blood flow was continuously monitored using near-infrared spectroscopy technique during rest, cognitive function test (CFT), and exercise.RESULTS: There was a significant group by time interaction in tissue saturation index (TSI) (<i>p</i>=.046). Post-hoc analysis presented that TSI at post-exercise CFT was higher than during exercise in TE (<i>p</i>=.02). In both exercises, TSI at pre-exercise CFT significantly increased compared to the resting value (<i>p</i>=.001). Cerebral oxyhemoglobin level was significantly increased during exercise and at post-exercise CFT compared to the resting value in both exercises (<i>p</i><.001). The reaction time for certain cognitive tasks such as color, word with matched color, word with color interference, and color with word interference was improved after both exercises (<i>p</i><.05).CONCLUSIONS: One-bout of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise acutely improves cerebral blood flow and cognitive function even in healthy young adults. Exercise types with the same intensity do not seem to make meaningful difference in the positive effects of aerobic exercise.

IntroductionCounterfactual thoughts (CFT) are mental representations of alternatives to past events, actions or states. For example, “If only I had studied, I would have passed the exam”).CFT in healthy subjects is associated with learning, behavioral regulation and planning.Damage to the prefrontal brain regions has been related to decreased generation and use of CFT. Due to the fact that frontal deficits are documented in patients with schizophrenia, it is expected that these patients could also present impairments in CFT.ObjectivesThe aim of our study was to examine the role of the generation of CFT in schizophrenia patients.MethodsForty subjects who met DSM-IV criteria for schizophrenia and 40 healthy control participants were recruited. The two groups were matched in age, education, and handedness. To investigate the generation of CTF we used an adaptation of the task made by Wells, Taylor & Turtle (1987). In this task, we presented to the subjects one history with 4 different scenarios. After the presentation of the history, we asked to the subjects that list alternatives to solve the problem presented in the history.ResultsThe schizophrenic patients generated less responses of CTF that controls. The patients obtained a mean of responses of 1.48 (1 SD). The mean for the controls was 2.08 (.971 SD). The control subjects generated significantly more counterfactual responses than schizophrenic patients ([t (78) = −2.670, p = .269]).ConclusionsOur findings indicate that patients with schizophrenia have impoverished the generation of CFT compared to normal control participants.

The objective of the present study was to compare the performance of three serological tests for diagnosis of Brucella abortus infections in buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis). Serum samples collected from 696 adult females were submitted to the competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA-C), (I-ELISA), fluorescence polarization test (FPA), 2-mercaptoethanol test (2-ME) and complement fixation test (CFT). The gold standard was the combination of CFT and 2-ME, considering as positive the reactors in both CFT and 2-ME, and as negative those non-reactors. ROC analyses were done for C-ELISA, I-ELISA and FPA and the Kappa agreement index were also calculated. The best combinations of relative sensitivity (SEr) and relative specificity (SPr) and Kappa were given by C-ELISA (96.9%, 99.1%, and 0.932, respectively) and FPA (92.2%, 97.6 and 0.836, respectively). The C-ELISA and FPA were the most promising confirmatory tests for the serological diagnosis of brucellosis in buffaloes, and for these tests, cut-off values for buffaloes may be the same as those used for bovines.

Test evaluation in the absence of a gold standard test was conducted for the diagnosis and screening of bovine brucellosis using three commercially available tests including RBPT, CFT, and I-ELISA in National Animal Health Diagnostic and Investigation Center (NAHDIC) Ethiopia. A total of 278 sera samples from five dairy herds were collected and tested. Each serum sample was subjected to the three tests and the results obtained were recorded and the test outcomes were cross-classified to estimate the sensitivity and specificity of the tests using Bayesian model. Prior information generated on the sensitivity and specificity of bovine brucellosis from published data was used in the model. The three test-one population Bayesian model was modified and applied using WinBug software with the assumption that the dairy herds have similar management system and unknown disease status. The Bayesian posterior estimate for sensitivity was 89.6 (95% PI: 79.9–95.8), 96.8 (95% PI: 92.3–99.1), and 94 (95% PI: 87.8–97.5) and for specificity was 84.5 (95% PI: 68–94.98), 96.3 (95% PI: 91.7–98.8), and 88.5 (95% PI: 81–93.8) for RBT, I-ELISA, and CFT, respectively. In this study I-ELISA was found with the best sensitivity and specificity estimates 96.8 (95% PI: 92.3–99.1) and 96.3 (95% PI: 91.7–98.8), compared to both CFT and RBPT.

I review some of the concepts at the crossroads of gravitational thermodynamics, holography and quantum mechanics. First, the origin of gravitational thermodynamics due to coarse graining of quantum information is exemplified using the half-BPS sector of [Formula: see text] SYM and its LLM description in type IIB supergravity. The notion of black holes as effective geometries, its relation to the fuzzball programme and some of the puzzles raising for large black holes are discussed. Second, I review recent progress for extremal black holes, both microscopically, discussing a constituent model for stationary extremal non-BPS black holes, and semiclassically, discussing the extremal black hole/CFT conjecture. The latter is examined from the AdS3/CFT2 perspective. Third, I review the importance of the holographic principle to encode nonlocal gravity features allowing us to relate the gravitational physics of local observers with thermodynamics and the role causality plays in these arguments by identifying horizons (screens) as diathermic walls. I speculate with the emergence of an approximate CFT in the deep IR close to any horizon and its relation with an effective dynamical description of the degrees of freedom living on these holographic screens.

ABSTRACT Brucellosis is an infectious disease caused by bacteria of the genus Brucella spp. with diagnosis based on use of serological techniques. The present study aimed to develop and standardize a western blotting (WB) test for detection of antibodies against B. abortus. Samples from two groups of cattle were analyzed: group I: 60 serum samples from true positive and true negative vaccinated animals (30 positive samples from infected animals according to rose bengal test (RBT), 2-mercaptoethanol, serum agglutination test (SAT) and complement fixation test (CFT) and 30 RBT negatives samples); group II: 383 field samples (90 positive and 293 CFT negative sera). The most reactive band in the western blotting, which properly identified and separated infected from non - infected had a molecular weight of ≤ 20kDa. The sensitivity, specificity and accuracy of the WB compared to RBT was 93%, 99%, 98%, respectively and k= 0.938. When compared to CFT, the sensitivity, specificity and accuracy of the WB was 97%, 98% and 97%, respectively and k= 0.929. The WB developed and standardized in the present study is a serological test with potential use as a confirmatory test for the diagnosis of bovine brucellosis.

The implementation of holography in gravitational physics has its most concrete realization in the context of the anti-de Sitter/conformal field theory (AdS/CFT) correspondence conjecture, an implication of which is that counterterms from the boundary CFT can be understood as surface terms that render the variational principle finite and well-defined for the gravity theory in the bulk. I discuss recent developments that show how such gravitational counterterms can be deployed for asymptotically flat spacetimes in any spacetime dimension d ≥ 4. These actions yield conserved quantities at spacelike infinity that agree with the usual Arnowitt–Deser–Misner results but are more general. This approach removes the need for ill-defined background subtraction methods and suggests the possibility of obtaining a dual field theory to gravity theories in asymptotically flat spacetimes.PACS Nos.: 04.20.Ha, 04.60.–m, 11.25.Tq

<b><i>Objective:</i></b> To investigate the effectiveness and safety of intravitreal injection of conbercept (IVC) as the initial treatment for exudative circumscribed choroidal hemangioma (CCH). <b><i>Methods:</i></b> Forty-two eyes of 42 patients received 3 monthly IVC (0.5 mg/0.05 mL) as the initial treatment. Three months later, the patients were assessed for further treatment including observation, reinjection of conbercept, laser photocoagulation (if the lesion was 3,000 μm away from the macular fovea), or photodynamic therapy (PDT; if the lesion was under the macular fovea). Anatomical and functional responses including best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), central foveal thickness (CFT), and tumor size were analyzed. <b><i>Results:</i></b> Twenty-three patients (54.76%) were sensitive to the monotherapy of IVC. Fourteen patients (33.33%) were insensitive to IVC and underwent rescue laser photocoagulation, and 5 patients (11.90%) underwent rescue PDT due to insensitivity to IVC treatment at 3 months. For subgroup analysis, although no statistical difference was found for BCVA at any follow-up time point compared to baseline, an increasing tendency of BCVA was found in the IVC group (<i>p</i>&#x3e; 0.05). The mean CFT decreased significantly from 427.13 ± 214.74 μm at baseline to 259.83 ± 61.68 μm at 6 months in the IVC group (<i>p</i>&#x3c; 0.05). No influence on tumor size was found in the IVC group. <b><i>Conclusion:</i></b> IVC as the initial treatment might be an option for exudative CCH.

The methods commonly used for human brucellosis serological testing are agglutination tests and the complement fixation test (CFT). Among the newer serological tests, primary binding assays were developed to improve sensitivity and specificity. The competitive enzyme immunoassay (CELISA) for the detection of serum antibody to Brucella is a multispecies assay which appears to be capable of differentiating vaccinal and cross-reacting antibodies from antibodies elicited by field infection in cattle. The competing monoclonal antibody used in this assay is specific for a common epitope of smooth lipopolysaccharide (S-LPS). In this study, we compared the CELISA to the classical tests for the diagnosis of human brucellosis. The CELISA cutoff value was determined to calculate its diagnostic specificity and sensitivity. A survey was performed with 911 sera. Of the sera, 341 were from an asymptomatic population that tested negative with conventional serological tests (screening and confirmatory). Based on these samples, the CELISA specificities were determined to be 99.7 and 100% with cutoff values of 28 and 30% inhibition (%I), respectively. In a further study with 393 additional sera from an asymptomatic population found negative by the conventional screening tests, the CELISA specificities were calculated to be 96.5 and 98.8% with cutoff values of 28 and 30%I. The CELISA sensitivities were determined to be 98.3 and 94.8% with cutoff values of 28 and 30%I, respectively, for sera from 116 individuals found positive by the classical tests. For the 51 culture-positive patients, CELISA was positive for 100%, the CFT was positive for 92%, and the standard tube agglutination test (TAT) was positive for 100%. The CELISA specificity was 100% for 31 sera from patients found negative by conventional serological tests but with brucellosis-like symptoms. The CELISA is fairly rapid to perform, somewhat faster than TAT, and cross-reacts less with other antigens (or antibodies) than the conventional tests. Further, the CELISA is simpler to perform that the CFT and may readily be standardized by the use of purified S-LPS antigen and monoclonal antibody for competition.

ABSTRACTIn this study, we comparedCoxiella burnetiiIgG phase I, IgG phase II, and IgM phase II detection among a commercially available enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) (Virion/Serion), an indirect fluorescent antibody test (IFAT) (Focus Diagnostics), and a complement fixation test (CFT) (Virion/Serion). For this, we used a unique collection of acute- and convalescent-phase sera from 126 patients with acute Q fever diagnosed by positiveCoxiella burnetiiPCR of blood. We were able to establish a reliable date of onset of disease, since DNA is detectable within 2 weeks after the start of symptoms. In acute samples, att= 0, IFAT demonstrated IgM phase II antibodies in significantly more sera than did ELISA (31.8% versus 19.7%), although the portion of solitary IgM phase II was equal for IFAT and for ELISA (18.2% and 16.7%, respectively). Twelve months after the diagnosis of acute Q fever, 83.5% and 62.2% of the sera were still positive for IgM phase II with IFAT and ELISA, respectively. At 12 months IFAT IgG phase II showed the slowest decline. Therefore, definitive serological evidence of acute Q fever cannot be based on a single serum sample in areas of epidemicity and should involve measurement of both IgM and IgG antibodies in paired serum. Based on IgG phase II antibody detection in paired samples (at 0 and 3 months) from 62 patients, IFAT confirmed more cases than ELISA and CFT, but the differences were not statically significant (100% for IFAT, 95.2% for ELISA, and 96.8% for CFT). This study demonstrated that the three serological tests are equally effective in diagnosing acute Q fever within 3 months of start of symptoms. In follow-up sera, more IgG antibodies were detected by IFAT than by ELISA or CFT, making IFAT more suitable for prevaccination screening programs.

<b><i>Purpose:</i></b> We aim to determine the effects of intravitreal aflibercept (IVA) on the mean sensitivity (MS) of the central retina, best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), and central foveal thickness (CFT) in eyes with neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) with or without polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV). <b><i>Methods:</i></b> This was a prospective, interventional study. All eyes were treatment-naive with nAMD with or without PCV. Each eye received 3 monthly IVA injections followed by an IVA injection every 2 months for 12 months. The primary outcome was the change in the MS within the central 2°. The secondary outcomes were the changes in BCVA, CFT, greatest linear dimension (GLD), and percentage of eyes with a dry macula. <b><i>Results:</i></b> Thirty-seven eyes of 37 patients were studied. A significant improvement of the MS (dB) was observed +4.9 ± 4.6 dB (mean ± standard deviation) at 3 M (<i>p</i> &#x3c; 0.001), +5.5 ± 4.9 dB at 6 (<i>p</i> &#x3c; 0.001), and +7.0 ± 3.4 dB at 12 M (<i>p</i> &#x3c; 0.001) compared to the baseline in all eyes. The MS of the eyes with non-PCV was not significantly different from that of eyes with PCV (<i>p</i> = 1.00, 1.00, 1.00, and 0.76 at baseline, 3, 6, and 12 M, respectively). The MS of 11 patients whose BCVA remained unchanged was significantly improved by +6.5 ± 2.8 dB at 3 M (<i>p</i> &#x3c; 0.001), +6.1 ± 4.3 dB at 6 M (<i>p</i> &#x3c; 0.001), and +6.4 ± 4.8 dB at 12 M (<i>p</i> = 0.003) compared to the baseline. The mean BCVA was significantly improved from the baseline to 3 M (<i>p</i> &#x3c; 0.001), 6 M (<i>p</i> = 0.027), and 12 M (<i>p</i> = 0.003) in all eyes. The BCVA was improved or maintained in 97% of the patients at 12 M. The mean CFT and GLD were significantly reduced at 12 M (<i>p</i> &#x3c; 0.001). Twenty-two eyes (71%) had a dry macula at 12 M. <b><i>Conclusions:</i></b> IVA administered by a fixed dosing regimen led to significant improvements of the central MS, BCVA, and macular morphology at 1 year in eyes with nAMD with or without PCV. These results were not significantly different between eyes with non-PCV and with PCV. The improvements of the MS of the retina of the central 2° in a subgroup whose BCVA remained unchanged through the 12-month experimental period was also significant. We conclude that the MS of the central 2° might be a better marker than the BCVA in determining the effectiveness of IVA treatments and might be helpful in determining early effects on the retina before BCVA changes can be detected.

Purpose. To investigate the morphological and functional outcomes of idiopathic epiretinal membrane (ERM) surgery between three different surgical techniques: ERM peeling only, whole-piece ILM peeling, and maculorrhexis ILM peeling. Patients and Methods. This is a retrospective, consecutive, and comparative study enrolling 60 patients from Kaohsiung Medical University Hospital, Kaohsiung, Taiwan. Surgery performed between July 2011 and June 2012 was done with ERM peeling only (group I). ERM peeling and ILM peeling as a whole piece (group II) were performed between July 2012 and July 2013. Surgery performed between August 2013 and December 2014 was done with maculorrhexis ILM peeling (group III). Main outcome measures include visual acuity change (BCVA) and central foveal thickness (CFT). Results. At 12 months postoperation, the mean BCVA in group III was significantly better than in group I and group II. Comparison of CFT reduction between the three groups revealed significantly more reduction in group III than in group II at all postoperative follow-up periods. Eyes with restoration of foveal depression were observed in 52.6% in group I, 52.4% in group III, but only 20% of eyes in group II. None of the eyes in both ILM peeling groups encountered recurrence of macular pucker formation. Conclusion. All three techniques can achieve visual acuity improvement and macular thickness reduction. Maculorrhexis ILM peeling achieves more rapid improvement of visual function, better final visual outcome, and a higher rate of normal foveal contour than whole-piece ILM peeling.

<b><i>Introduction:</i></b> While previous studies have shown a significant impact of extreme hypo- and hyperthermia on coagulation, effects of much more frequently occurring perioperative mild hypothermia are largely unknown. This study therefore aimed to analyze the effects of mild hypothermia using rotational thromboelastometry in vitro. <b><i>Materials and Methods:</i></b> Twelve healthy volunteers were included in this study. Standard thromboelastometric tests (EXTEM, INTEM, FIBTEM) were used to evaluate coagulation in vitro at 39, 37, 35.5, 35, and 33°C. Beyond standard thromboelastometric tests, we also evaluated the effects of mild hypothermia on the TPA-test (ClotPro, Enicor GmbH, Munich, Germany), a new test which aims to detect fibrinolytic capacity by adding tissue plasminogen activator to the sample. Data are presented as the median with 25/75th percentiles. <b><i>Results:</i></b> Extrinsically activated coagulation (measured by EXTEM) showed a significant increase in clot formation time (CFT; 37°C: 90 s [81/105] vs. 35°C: 109 s [99/126]; <i>p</i> = 0.0002), while maximum clot firmness (MCF) was not significantly reduced. Intrinsically activated coagulation (measured by INTEM) also showed a significant increase in CFT (37°C: 80 s [72/88] vs. 35°C: 94 s [86/109]; <i>p</i> = 0.0002) without significant effects on MCF. Mild hypothermia significantly increased both the lysis onset time (136 s [132/151; 37°C] vs. 162 s [141/228; 35°C], <i>p</i> = 0.0223) and lysis time (208 s [184/297; 37°C] vs. 249 s [215/358; 35°C]; <i>p</i> = 0.0259). <b><i>Conclusion:</i></b> This demonstrates that even under mild hypothermia coagulation is significantly altered in vitro. Perioperative temperature monitoring and management are greatly important and can help to prevent mild hypothermia and its adverse effects. Further investigation and in vivo testing of coagulation under mild hypothermia is needed.

Brucellosis is one of the most important worldwide zoonoses of many countries including Egypt. Camel brucellosis has not gained much attention in Egypt yet. This study is focused on the three governorates with the highest camel populations and the largest camel markets in the country to determine the disease seroprevalence and identify the Brucella species in local camel holdings. In total, 381 serum samples were collected from male and female camels from Giza, Aswan, and Al-Bahr Al-Ahmar (the Red Sea) governorates. Samples were serologically examined using the Rose–Bengal plate test (RBPT), indirect ELISA (i-ELISA), competitive ELISA (c-ELISA) and complement fixation test (CFT). Brucella antibodies were detected in 59 (15.5%), 87 (22.8%), 77 (20.2%) and 118 (31.0%) of sera by RBPT, i-ELISA, c-ELISA and CFT, respectively. Using real-time PCR, Brucella DNA was amplified in 32 (8.4%) seropositive samples including Brucella abortus (25/32), Brucella suis (5/32) and Brucella melitensis (2/32), defining a complex epidemiological status. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study reporting Brucella suis DNA in camel serum. The risk-associated factors including age, sex, breed and geographical distribution were statistically analyzed, showing non-significant association with seroprevalence. The results of this study will raise awareness for camel brucellosis and help develop effective control strategies.

Background and Objectives: To compare the long-term toxicity of infracyanine green (IFCG) to brilliant blue G (BBG) in inverted internal limiting membrane flap surgery (I-ILMFS) for large, full-thickness macular holes (FTMHs). Materials and Methods: Prospective randomized study including 39 eyes with ≥ 400 µm idiopathic FTMH who underwent I-ILMFS with either IFCG or BBG. Postoperative 6- and 12-month corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), closure rate, and swept-source optical coherence tomography parameters, including ellipsoid zone (EZ) and external limiting membrane (ELM) mean defect length, central foveal thicknesses (CFT), parafoveal macular thickness (MT), ganglion cells and inner plexiform layer (GCL++) thickness, and peripapillary nerve fiber layer (pRNFL) thickness, were compared. Results: Nineteen eyes were included in the IFCG group and 20 eyes in the BBG group. In all cases a FTMH closure was found. CDVA improved at 6 and 12 months in both groups (p < 0.0005); the increase at 12 months was greater in the BBG group (p = 0.036). EZ and ELM defects did not differ between groups at either follow-up time. CFT at 12 months was greater in the BBG group (p = 0.041). A 12-months compared to 6-months MT decrease was present in both groups (p < 0.01). The GCL++ superior inner sector was thicker in the BBG group at 12 months (p = 0.036), as were the superior outer sector (p = 0.039 and p = 0.027 at 6 and 12 months, respectively) and inferior outer sector (p = 0.011 and p = 0.009 at 6 and 12 months, respectively). Conclusion: In our study BBG in I-ILMFS exhibits better long-term CDVA and retinal thickness than does IFCG, suggesting a lesser toxicity from BBG. These findings support the use of BBG over IFCG in I-ILMFS.

Twenty-five camels (7.35%) were positive by both tests; 14 (4.12%) for <I>B. abortus</I> and 11 (3.23%) for <I>B. melitensis</I>. IL-1&beta; and IL-10 interleukin levels in both <I>B. abortus</I> and <I>B. melitensis</I> infected camels showed significant elevations (<I>P</I> < 0.05) compared with controls. Moreover, there was significantly larger increase in IL-1&beta; interleukins in camels infected with <I>B. abortus</I> compared with <I>B. melitensis</I>. TNF-&alpha;, IFN-&gamma; and IL-1&alpha; levels showed significant decreases (<I>P</I> < 0.05) in <I>Brucella</I> infected camels compared with non-infected ones; however, there was non-significant changes in IL-6 levels in <I>Brucella</I> infected camels compared with controls. Lymphopenia was recorded in infected camels but not in controls. However, normocytic normochromic anemia, hypoproteinemia, hypoalbuminemia and hypoglycemia were recorded in the <I>B. abortus</I> group only. Sorbitol dehydrogenase (SD), aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) showed significant increases (<I>P</I> < 0.05) in infected camels compared with controls, and in <I>B. abortus</I> infected camels compared with <I>B. melitensis</I> infected animals. This is the first report that describes changes in selected cytokines and various haematological and biochemical parameters associated with brucellosios in dromedary camels. This is a review of some recent works which demonstrate how the classical equations of gravity in AdS themselves hold the key to understand their holographic origin in the form of a strongly coupled large N QFT whose algebra of local operators can be generated by a few (single-trace) elements. I discuss how this can be realized by reformulating Einstein’s equations in AdS in the form of a nonperturbative RG flow that further leads to a new approach toward constructing strongly interacting QFTs. In particular, the RG flow can self-determine the UV data that are otherwise obtained by solving classical gravity equations and demanding that the solutions do not have naked singularities. For a concrete demonstration, I focus on the hydrodynamic limit in which case this RG flow connects the AdS/CFT correspondence with the membrane paradigm, and also reproduces the known values of the dual QFT transport coefficients.

Annotation:
Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) adhere to the intestinal mucosa by a number of fimbrial colonization factors (CFs) that have been claimed to induce only type-specific immunity. However, adult Bangladeshi patients infected with CFA/I-expressing bacteria, developed significant plasma IgA antibody responses, as determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, not only against the homologous fimbriae but also against several heterologous CFs, i.e. CS1, CS2, CS4 and PCFO166 fimbriae. In contrast, North American volunteers, who had probably not been infected by ETEC previously, responded with serum IgA against CFA/I fimbriae but not against any other CFs after symptomatic infection with CFA/I-expressing ETEC. Thus, infection with CFA/I-expressing bacteria may boost immune responses against CFs with a related amino acid sequence in previously primed subjects.

The aim of the present study was to test (i) Eysenck's theory that psychoticism (P) should be related to creativity, (ii) whether testosterone (T), due to its association with P claimed in the literature, can be identified as a biological marker of creativity, and (iii) whether the SEEK dimension of the Affective Neuroscience Personality Scales (ANPS) was also related to creativity and to testosterone due to its relationship to Sensation Seeking. In a sample of N = 48 male and female subjects, test scores on figural, verbal, and numeric creativity were compared between high and low P‐scorers as well as between high and low SEEK‐scorers. Effects were controlled for fluid intelligence as measured by Cattell's CFT‐3 and crystallized intelligence as assessed by the Structure‐of‐Intelligence‐Test (Intelligenz‐Struktur‐Test, I‐S‐T 2000 R). Neither a main effect of P or T nor an interaction effect P×T on creativity could be obtained. Instead, SEEK was related to all components of creativity and explained more than 15% of the variance of total creativity. Moreover, significant differences in SEEK could be explained by differences in T, independently of gender. Furthermore, 39% of the variance of SEEK could be explained by the two uncorrelated indicators testosterone and creativity. Copyright © 2004 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

ABSTRACT We have studied homologous (HoM) and cross-reacting (CR) immunoglobulin A (IgA) antibody responses to colonization factors (CFs) in Bangladeshi children with diarrhea due to enterotoxigenic E. coli (ETEC) strains of the CF antigen I (CFA/I) group (CFA/I, n = 25; coli surface antigen 4 [CS4], n = 8; CS14, n = 11) and the CS5 group (CS5, n = 15; CS7, n = 8), respectively. The responses to the HoM, CR, and heterologous (HeT) CF antigens in each group of patient were studied and compared to that seen in healthy children (n = 20). In the CFA/I group (CFA/I and CS14), patients responded with antibody-secreting cell (ASC) responses to HoM CFs (geometric mean, 156 to 329 ASCs/106 peripheral blood mononuclear cells [PBMCs]) and to CR CFs (≈15 to 38 ASCs/106 PBMCs) but least of all to the HeT CS5 antigen (2 to 4 ASCs/106 PBMCs). For the CS5 group of patients with ETEC (CS5 and CS7), likewise, responses to HoM CFs (230 to 372 ASCs/106 PBMCs) and CR CFs (27 to 676 ASCs/106 PBMCs) were seen, along with lower responses to the HeT CFA/I antigen (9 to 38 ASCs/106 PBMCs). Both groups of patients responded with CF-specific IgA antibodies to HoM and CR antigens in plasma but responded less to the HeT CFs. The responses in patients were seen very soon after the onset of diarrhea and peaked around 1 week after onset. Vaccinees who had received two doses of the oral, killed whole-cell ETEC vaccine (CF-BS-ETEC) responded with plasma IgA antibodies to CFA/I, a component of the vaccine, but also to the CR CS14 antigen, which was not included in the vaccine, showing that antibody responses can be stimulated by a CFA/I-containing ETEC vaccine to a CR-reacting antigen in individuals in countries where ETEC is endemic.
