The increasing demand for optics quality requires the lowest optical power loss, which can occur from unwanted reflections. Laser direct writing (LDW) allows for the fabrication of complex structures, which is particularly advantageous in micro-optic applications. This research demonstrates the possibility of forming an anti-reflective coating on hybrid polymer micro-lenses fabricated by employing LDW without changing their geometry. Such coating deposited via atomic layer deposition (ALD) decreased the reflection from 3.3% to 0.1% at a wavelength of 633 nm for one surface of hybrid organic–inorganic SZ2080™ material. This research validates the compatibility of ALD with LDW 3D multiphoton lithography synergistically, expanding its applications on optical grade sub-100 μm scale micro-optics.

A new organic–inorganic hybrid synthesized through a sol-gel process starting from alkoxysilane and chitosan is reported. Functionalization of the hybrid was effected through in situ hydrolysis–condensation reaction of methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS) and vinyltrimethoxysilane (VTMS) in the reaction medium. The process yields highly transparent and hydrophobic silica–chitosan hybrids. The hybrid gel was investigated with respect to chemical modification, thermal degradation, hydrophobicity, and transparency under the ultraviolet-visible region. The extent of hydrophobicity had been tailored by varying the precursor ratio. SiO2–chitosan–MTMS hybrids showed a higher thermal stability than SiO2–chitosan–VTMS (SCV) hybrids with respect to hydrophobicity. Condensation of silsesquioxanes generated from the hydrolysis of MTMS and VTMS over the silica-chitosan particles impart hydrophobicity to the hybrid. The coatings of functionalized SiO2–chitosan precursor sol on glass substrates showed nearly 100% optical transmittance in the visible region. The present hybrid material may find application in optics and other industries.

AbstractHybrid cavity-antenna systems have been proposed to combine the sub-wavelength light confinement of plasmonic antennas with microcavity quality factors Q. Here, we examine what confinement and Q can be reached in these hybrid systems, and we address their merits for various applications in classical and quantum optics. Specifically, we investigate their applicability for quantum-optical applications at noncryogenic temperatures. To this end we first derive design rules for hybrid resonances from a simple analytical model. These rules are benchmarked against full-wave simulations of hybrids composed of state-of-the-art nanobeam cavities and plasmonic-dimer gap antennas. We find that hybrids can outperform the plasmonic and cavity constituents in terms of Purcell factor, and additionally offer freedom to reach any Q at a similar Purcell factor. We discuss how these metrics are highly advantageous for a high Purcell factor, yet weak-coupling applications, such as bright sources of indistinguishable single photons. The challenges for room-temperature strong coupling, however, are far more daunting: the extremely high dephasing of emitters implies that little benefit can be achieved from trading confinement against a higher Q, as done in hybrids. An attractive alternative could be strong coupling at liquid nitrogen temperature, where emitter dephasing is lower and this trade-off can alleviate the stringent fabrication demands required for antenna strong coupling. For few-emitter strong-coupling, high-speed and low-power coherent or incoherent light sources, particle sensing and vibrational spectroscopy, hybrids provide the unique benefit of very high local optical density of states, tight plasmonic confinement, yet microcavity Q.

Abstract In this paper we present an expansion of the technique of characterizing nonlinear optics from off-energy orbits (NOECO) [1] to cover harmonic sextupoles in storage rings. The existing NOECO technique has been successfully used to correct the chromatic sextupole errors on the MAX-IV machine, however, it doesn’t account for harmonic sextupoles, which are widely used on many other machines. Through generating vertical dispersion with chromatic skew quadrupoles, a measurable dependence of nonlinear optics on harmonic sextupoles can be observed from hybrid horizontal and vertical dispersive orbits. Proof of concept of our expanded technique was accomplished by simulations and beam measurements on the National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II) storage ring.

Abstract Hybrid optical elements, which combine refractive and diffractive optical components to enhance optical performance by taking advantage of the optical characteristics of the individual components, have enormous potential for next-generation optical devices. However, there have not been many reports on the simulation methodology to characterize such hybrid optical systems. Here, we present a method for simulating a hybrid optical element realized by attaching an ultra-thin, flexible diffractive optics array onto a refractive optical element. The ultra-thin diffractive optical element is fabricated by direct-laser-writing using a femtosecond pulsed laser as the light source. A systematic investigation of the proposed simulation method, which does not require extensive hardware resources or computational time, but retains resolution and accuracy, is presented. The proposed scheme is validated by comparing simulation and experimental results. The simulation and experimental results on the spot size and focal length for the diffractive Fresnel zone plate (FZP) match well, with typical errors of less than 6%. The aspect ratio of the focal spot sizes at the compound and FZP focal planes of the hybrid optical system from the simulation and experiment also match quite well, with typical errors below 7%. This simulation scheme will expedite the designs for novel hybrid optical systems with optimal optical performances for specific applications, such as microfluidics and aberration-controlled optics.

The integration of low-dimensional materials with optical waveguides presents promising opportunities for enhancing light manipulation in passive photonic circuits. In this study, we investigate the potential of aerosol-synthesized single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) films for silicon nitride photonic circuits as a basis for developing integrated optics devices. Specifically, by measuring the optical response of SWCNT-covered waveguides, we retrieve the main SWCNT film parameters, such as absorption, nonlinear refractive, and thermo-optic coefficients, and we demonstrate the enhancement of all-optical wavelength conversion and the photoresponse with a 1.2 GHz bandwidth.

AbstractTwo-dimensional (2D) organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites feature characteristics of inherent quantum-well structures and intriguing optoelectronic properties, and have therefore attracted enormous research attention for their optical applications in light emitting, sensing, modulation, and telecommunication devices. The low-cost and solution-processed fabrications as well as alternative organic spacer cations endue 2D hybrid perovskites with higher tunability in optical and photonic applications. In particular, they demonstrate distinguished nonlinear optical characters such as second-harmonic generation (SHG), two-photon absorption (2PA), and saturable absorption (SA) under the excitation of laser pulses. Here, we discuss the construction of the various sorts of 2D hybrid perovskites with different structural features. We have also highlighted some representative properties and applications of these 2D hybrid perovskites in both linear and nonlinear optical regimes.

‘Smart’ structural health monitoring of composite materials with optical fiber sensors is becoming more and more important, especially in the aviation industry. This paper presents an overview of hybrid fiber-optic sensing systems based on scattering techniques, fiber Bragg gratings, interferometric techniques, and polarimetric methods in structural health monitoring. The main purpose of this manuscript is to analyze the possibilities of using hybrid sensors based on fiber optics to monitor composite structures, with a particular emphasis on aircraft structures. Since it is difficult to indicate the most comprehensive approach due to different parameters of the described sensors, the review contains a detailed description of available solutions. We hope that this work will allow for a better and faster selection of the right solution for the problem at hand.

Two themost perspective materials for hybrid waveguide fabrication were considered:silicon and titanium dioxide. The max Q factor/Min BER are simulated after APD receiver based both erbium doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs) and wide band traveling wave semiconductor optical amplifiers (WBTWSOAs) with 50 km fiber channel and 4 km FSO channel. Max SPAL/min noise SPAL, max signal power amplitude/min noise signal power variations with spectral frequency, and the total electrical power are demonstrated and clarified in this proposed study. This work emphasized that the fiber channel is reached up to 100 km reach and FSO channel can be also extended to 4 km reach with 40 Gbps.</span></p>

This study deals with the problem of fiber-free optical communication systems—known as free space optics—using received signal strength identifier (RSSI) prediction analysis for hard switching of optical fiber-free link to base radio-frequency (RF) link and back. Adverse influences affecting the atmospheric transmission channel significantly impair optical communications, therefore attention was paid to the practical design, as well as to the implementation of the monitoring device that is used to record and process weather information along a transmission path. The article contains an analysis and methodology of the solution of the high availability of the optical link. Attention was paid to the technique of hard free space optics (FSO)/RF-switching with regard to the amount of received optical power detected and its relation to the quantities influencing the optical communication line. For this purpose, selected methods of machine learning were used, which serve to predict the received optical power. The process of analysis of prediction of received optical power is realized by regression models. The study presents the design of the optimal data input matrix model, which forms the basis for the training of the prediction models for estimating the received optical power.

Aspheric optics is widely used for many optical applications due to their advantages, that is, light weight, cost-effectiveness and efficiency. There are many fabrication challenges which affect the quality of aspheric optics used for infrared-based applications. Diamond turning is one of the most suitable techniques for fabrication of infrared aspheric lens with high profile accuracies, due to its deterministic approach. However, for optics with large sag value, multiple machining cycles are required to make the best fit surface. Repeated machining cycles result in generation of inherent stresses leading to subsurface deformation and poor quality. In this study, hybrid approach of grinding and machining is proposed for fabrication of silicon infrared optics in large volume. The proposed approach results in reduced fabrication time and subsurface deformation with improved surface quality and tool life. The profile accuracy after compensation of profile error ( Pt) is 0.21 µm and surface roughness ( Ra) 10.5 nm is achieved.

With the increasing demand of achieving comprehensive perception in every aspect of life, optical fibers have shown great potential in various applications due to their highly-sensitive, highly-integrated, flexible and real-time sensing capabilities. Among various sensing mechanisms, plasmonics based fiber-optic sensors provide remarkable sensitivity benefiting from their outstanding plasmon–matter interaction. Therefore, surface plasmon resonance (SPR) and localized SPR (LSPR)-based hybrid fiber-optic sensors have captured intensive research attention. Conventionally, SPR- or LSPR-based hybrid fiber-optic sensors rely on the resonant electron oscillations of thin metallic films or metallic nanoparticles functionalized on fiber surfaces. Coupled with the new advances in functional nanomaterials as well as fiber structure design and fabrication in recent years, new solutions continue to emerge to further improve the fiber-optic plasmonic sensors’ performances in terms of sensitivity, specificity and biocompatibility. For instance, 2D materials like graphene can enhance the surface plasmon intensity at the metallic film surface due to the plasmon–matter interaction. Two-dimensional (2D) morphology of transition metal oxides can be doped with abundant free electrons to facilitate intrinsic plasmonics in visible or near-infrared frequencies, realizing exceptional field confinement and high sensitivity detection of analyte molecules. Gold nanoparticles capped with macrocyclic supramolecules show excellent selectivity to target biomolecules and ultralow limits of detection. Moreover, specially designed microstructured optical fibers are able to achieve high birefringence that can suppress the output inaccuracy induced by polarization crosstalk and meanwhile deliver promising sensitivity. This review aims to reveal and explore the frontiers of such hybrid plasmonic fiber-optic platforms in various sensing applications.

A hybrid fiber/wireless link based on a single visible LED and free of opto-electronic intermediate conversion stages has been demonstrated for indoor communications. This paper shows the main guidelines for proper coupling in fiber/air/detector interfaces. Experimental demonstration has validated the design results with very good agreement between geometrical optics simulation and received optical power measurements. Different signal bandwidths and modulation formats, i.e., QPSK, 16-QAM, and 64-QAM, have been transmitted over 1.5 m polymer optical fiber (POF) and 1.5 m free-space optics (FSO). Throughputs up to 294 Mb/s using a 64-QAM signal have been demonstrated using a commercial LED, which paves the way for massive deployment in industrial applications.

Abstract The continuous miniaturization of components and devices along with the increasing need of sustainability in production requires materials which can fulfill the manifold requests concerning their functionality. From an industrial point of view emphasis is on cost reduction either for the materials, the processes, or for both, along with a facilitation of processing and a general reduction of resource consumption in manufacturing. Multifunctional nanoscale materials have been widely investigated due to their tunable material properties and their ability to fulfill the increasingly growing demands in miniaturization, ease of processes, low-cost manufacturing, scalability, reliability, and finally sustainability. A material class which fulfills these requirements and is suited for integrated or waferscale optics are inorganic–organic hybrid polymers such as ORMOCER®s [ORMOCER® is registered by the Fraunhofer Gesellschaft für Angewandte Forschung e.V. and commercialized by microresist technology GmbH under license since 2003]. The combination of chemically designed multifunctional low-cost materials with tunable optical properties is very attractive for (integrated) optical and waferscale applications via a variety of different nano- and microstructuring techniques to fabricate micro- and nano-optical components, typically within less than a handful of process steps. The influence of photoinitiator and cross-linking conditions onto the optical properties of an acrylate-based inorganic–organic hybrid polymer will be discussed, and its suitability for being applied in waferscale optics is demonstrated and discussed for miniaturized multi- and single channel imaging optics.

Hybrid nanocomposites can provide a promising platform for integrated optics. Optical nonlinearity can significantly widen the range of applications of such structures. In the present paper, a theoretical investigation is carried out by solving the density matrix equations derived for a metal nanoparticles-graphene nanodisks-quantum dots hybrid system interacting with weak probe and strong control fields, in the steady state. We derive analytical expressions for linear and third-order nonlinear susceptibilities of the probe field. A giant self-Kerr nonlinear index of refraction is obtained in the optical region with relatively low light intensity. The optical absorption spectrum of the system demonstrates electromagnetically induced transparency and amplification without population inversion in the linear optical response arising from the negative real part of the polarizabilities for the plasmonic components at the energy of the localized surface plasmon resonance of the graphene nanodisks induced by the probe field. We find that the self-Kerr nonlinear optical properties of the system can be controlled by the geometrical features of the system, the size of metal nanoparticles and the strength of the control field. The controllable self-Kerr nonlinearities of hybrid nanocomposites can be employed in many interesting applications of modern integrated optics devices allowing for high nonlinearity with relatively low light intensity.

Intercalation nonlinear-optical (NLO) polyimide and polyimide/silica hybrid material were synthesized by the sol–gel technique. The results showed that the interpenetrating hybrid polymer networks were formed and showed excellent thermal stability. The electro-optic property suggests that this hybrid material has potential for applications in high performance optical devices.

Such hybrid integration enables fully functional on-chip devices to be readily accessible researchers and technology developers, becoming a potential candidate for next-generation photonics and optoelectronics industries.

ABSTRACT Starlight corrupted by atmospheric turbulence cannot couple efficiently into astronomical instruments based on integrated optics as they require light of high spatial coherence to couple into their single-mode waveguides. Low-order adaptive optics in combination with photonic lanterns offer a practical approach to achieve efficient coupling into multiplexed astrophotonic devices. We investigate, aided by simulations and an experimental testbed, the trade-off between the degrees of freedom of the adaptive optics system and those of the input waveguide of an integrated optic component leading to a cost-effective hybrid system that achieves a signal-to-noise ratio higher than a standalone device fed by a single-mode fibre.
