Increasing people’s willingness to donate organs after their death requires effective communication strategies. In two preregistered studies, we assessed whether humorous entertainment education formats on organ donation elicit positive effects on knowledge, fears, attitudes, and behavioral intentions–both immediately after the treatment and four weeks later. We test whether perceived funniness mediates expected effects on attitudes and intentions. Study 1 is a quasi-experiment which uses a live medical comedy show (N = 3,964) as an entertainment education format, which either contained or did not contain information about organ donation. Study 2, a lab experiment, tests humor’s causal effect in a pre-post design with a control group (N = 144) in which the same content was provided in either a humorous or non-humorous way in an audio podcast. Results showed that humorous interventions per se were not more effective than neutral information, but that informing people about organ donation in general increased donation intentions, attitudes, and knowledge. However, humorous interventions were especially effective in reducing fears related to organ donation. The findings are discussed regarding the opportunities for sensitive health communication through entertainment education formats, psychological processes that humor triggers, and humor’s role in health communication formats.

The paper presents the analysis of the humor found in four dyadic conversations. The results of the conversational data match those of previous studies (Pickering et al., 2009): no differences were found in volume or speech-rate between humorous pause units and non-humorous ones. Similarly, pauses were not found to mark humorous turns. However, the result that punch-lines showed lower pitch than non-humorous parts of the text was not replicated: humorous pause units showed no significant differences in pitch from non-humorous ones. Smiling is found to mark humor only in a general sense of “setting the frame” and is not integrated (i.e., co-extensive) with the humor.

Humorous utterances can be divided into those which are created for their own sake (that is, to amuse others), dubbed autotelic humour, and those which communicate truthful and/or untruthful meanings germane to the ongoing conversation, dubbed speaker-meaning-telic humour (Dynel 2018). The present paper carries out a qualitative analysis of humorous units in sitcom discourse with a view to delineating a number of propositional meanings, which can be potentially derived by the TV recipients. Special attention is confined to one of the most powerful tools used to explain humour in various humorous manifestations, i.e. weak implicatures (Sperber and Wilson 1986 [1995]; Wilson and Sperber 2004). It is believed here that pragmatic COMPREHENSION mechanisms proposed within Relevance Theory and the notion of weakly communicated assumptions are two sides of the same coin since these account not only for the viewer’s recovery of a humorous interpretation but also of an array of non-humorous propositional meanings. Moreover, the participatory framework has been employed as an additional parameter to show the difference in the reception of a dialogue by fictional characters and the viewers.

This paper investigates the Arabic verbal humorous comments pertaining to COVID-19 on social media. The main objectives of the paper are to identify the distinct categories that are highlighted in those comments disseminated between March and September 2020, on the AlMamlaka and Roya Jordanian Facebook accounts. Additionally, the study examines the claim of Attardo and Raskins's (1991) that the "target" is an optional Knowledge Resource in the General Theory of Verbal Humor. The research design employed in this study is descriptive qualitative. The researchers conducted a thematic analysis to analyze 15 comments, applying the General Theory of Verbal Humor of Attardo and Raskin (1991). The analysis revealed eight emerging categories: governmental, gender, COVID-19, lockdown, behavior, conspiracy, geographical, and facemask jokes. The study found that humorous comments conform to the six Knowledge Resources of the General Theory of Verbal Humor. The most prominent logical mechanism used in the comments was irony and sarcasm, enabling Jordanians to shed light on hidden issues to express their reactions and feelings. The study also found that identifying the target in a humorous comment is crucial in determining the various categories of humorous comments. The research opens avenues for further exploration into the utilization and interpretation of humor in diverse cultural settings, during other natural disasters, and its impact on understanding humorous content.

Until now, Kazakh folk prose has been widely studied cognitively. In general, folklore as a science pays great attention to the genre of prose. However, it would be wrong to say that all genres of Kazakh folklore have been studied and known to the broad masses. Despite the large number of humorous stories, in Kazakh folklore they are considered within other genres of prose. In other words, humorous stories in Kazakh folklore were not the subject of a separate, special study. If we pay attention to the opinions expressed in the writings of famous scientists-researchers in the field of folklore, it is confirmed that humorous stories are a branch of folk literature that is passed down from generation to generation. Despite the fact that humorous stories have been previously studied, it is natural that the latest advances in science raise questions that need to be revised, so we realized the importance of humorous stories in the work of our people and their study is a scientifically relevant topic. Thus, based on previous studies of the genres of folklore, this article examines the connection between humorous stories and other genres.

Evaluation of humorous advertisements is supposed to be influenced by the perceivers' traits. The present study assessed the relation of extraversion with ratings of eight characteristics of humorous and informative advertisements. 75 high school students viewed the advertisements; a small positive correlation was found between scores on Extraversion and overall positive ratings of the humorous advertisement, but the correlation of scores on Extraversion with overall ratings of the informative advertisement was not statistically significant. Higher scores for Extraversion were positively correlated with more favorable reactions toward the humorous advertisement. Overall ratings of the humorous advertisement were also positively correlated with the humorousness and informativeness ratings, indicating that the more the advertisement was perceived as humorous and informative, the more positive was the overall rating. The later ratings were significantly intercorrelated at rs = .50. The role of extraversion was small but significant in the evaluation of humorous advertisements.

Variations in attention during intentional or incidental learning were investigated. Materials for intentional learning were presented to 165 college students in conjunction with peripheral cues of humorous and non-humorous materials presented for incidental learning. An hypothesized funneling effect, an attentional shift during learning to the incidental materials, was not found for humorous or non-humorous materials and intentional recall of materials. Subjects with high self-reported sense of humor attended significantly more than subjects with a low sense of humor to incidental humorous materials. Further, subjects with high sense of humor showed significantly greater recall of incidental humorous materials than subjects with low sense of humor. A one-item self-report scale of sense of humor provided behavioral discrimination. The complexity of intentional and incidental learning and the effects of sense of humor on attention to intentional and incidental materials were discussed.

The number of varied advertisements makes each brand or company need to find suitable ways and methods to package its advertisements to attract consumers. One form of method that can be done is the use of humorous advertisements. The goal of this research is to compare the effects of three humorous advertisement techniques on college students’ purchase intention. This experimental study used between-participants posttest-only design. 108 college students were recruited using the simple random sampling technique and were assigned to three different experimental groups with 36 participants in each group. These three experimental groups were given self-made humorous advertisements with different techniques (arousal-safety, incongruity-resolution, and humorous disparagement). The advertisements were 30-seconds long, for a made-up brand, a strawberry flavored milk drink. Then, they were given a purchase intent scale to measure their purchase intention of the advertised product. The results showed all three experimental groups are at neutral or slightly disagree to have the intention to purchase the advertised product. The hypothesis test was done using One-Way Anova. No significant differences were found between three humorous advertisement techniques. Possible explanations for this result are presented in this study.

The concept 'mess-understanding' has circulated in online media and is so prevalent that it is now included in the Urban Dictionary. The folk concept of mess-understandings is a pun for misunderstandings arising in an online media context. Posting one's own or others' miscommunication and/or typographical errors has grown to be a popular way of sharing humor via cross-platform sharing on the Internet. The aim of this paper is to analyze short message service (SMS) dialogues shared in social media, with a special emphasis on those with the highest degree of 'shareability' and/or popularity. The study specifically focuses on understanding linguistic and communicative reasons behind these dialogues being treated as humorous by users. As such, the study aims to shed light upon current cultural conceptions of communication and humor. Data was collected from the photo sharing website Pinterest from users who had posted or reposted 'screen shots' from their own or others' SMS conversations. In order to collect as much valuable data as possible, a manual search strategy was developed with three different word strings which resulted in a corpus of 160 dialogues. Content analysis of the data revealed certain recurrent humor themes, such as allusions to sexual conduct or bodily functions, generation gaps, technology difficulties, and lexical ambiguity.

This chapter presents the results of a qualitative study of a corpus of replies to humoristic memes, which were published and viralised on Twitter during the Spanish general elections campaign held on November 2019. Based on the General Theory of Verbal Humour and on its adaptation to multimodal humour, this study aims at establishing whether and how memes made up of a single image or a combination of an image and a caption may generate humorous effects on the imagined audience on Twitter and encourage responses that entail continued humour. The results show that most of the memes analysed convey recognition, understanding, appreciation, and agreement among Twitter users, whose responses express laughter using different multimodal affordances, or replicate the humorous contents of the meme by producing new memes. Moreover, humour created by these memes enables producer users and recipients to challenge the political power, while nurturing in-group solidarity.

AbstractThe field of research on science teaching and learning at the college level has recently divided into disciplinary communities. In this chapter, we meet in the middle of our disciplinary inquiries in astronomy education x geoscience education x education research to make meaning of the possibilities between and among our communities, and within the broader landscape of research on science teaching and learning. By examining knowledge at the interface of these disciplines, we believe we can use science teaching and learning to address problems facing humans and nonhumans today. Accordingly, we looked for ways to generate an affective sense of freedom to communicate and deliberate across perceived discipline-based education research community boundaries both in our research and in our teaching. Playing with geologic representations rendered during five research meetings over the course of three years, we explored possibilities of and limitations to disciplinary perturbations. We examined our previous engagements to convey real-time difficulties and humors involved with communicating across disciplines, with an aspiration to carve joy into our readers’ continued inquiries with others in our broader, shared science teaching and learning research landscape.

Abstract Silvestre Revueltas was, like Hanns Eisler, an outspokenly political composer inspired by the Russian Revolution, and there are indeed some aesthetic links between them. But not many. Political targets and aesthetic weapons are different for one rebelling from without the borders of European art music. Although Revueltas was also inspired by Marxist ideals, one could argue that the Mexican sounded an ontological turn as viewed from the South. One such target was art music itself, transgressed by him from within its practice, resorting to avant-gardist ploys, humorous or earnest. The other was an attempt to upturn the usual “high art”/“low art” hierarchy, in a way, an agential reversal that has innovative musical consequences that are unprecedented in Western art music. Approaching the musical result of such efforts requires analytical perspectives that go beyond the study of the composer’s writings and political actions in their relation to his scores, that is, the survey of his political doing in relation to its corresponding soundings. Concepts such as a decolonial border composing or the rhetorics of musicalized humor and the intermedial links of some of his scores in light of the chosen poetry, film, and theater plots are revealing. Anthropological theories of agency, only recently incorporated into the musicological toolkit, are especially pertinent and informative regarding Revueltas’ politically motivated voicing of the people.

Often this connection is spoken of as surprising or humorous. Henry A. Murray (personal communication, 1975), himself an influential psychological theorist, was talking with me once about Erik Erikson, whom he had known for many years. He pointed out that Erikson ‘s theory of human development did not fit everyone but applied to Erikson and people like him very well. Then he chuckled and, referring to theories of human development in general, said, “They ‘reall autobiographies, every one of them. “

Abstract Although it is difficult to be precise about exactly when research on SgE commenced, the first book on the subject was published in 1974: Tongue, The English of Singapore and Malaysia. The work, which is ‘designed for the general reader and not for the specialist’ (p. v), includes a wide range of features typical of the local variety of English. However, it is unfortunate that one of the chapters is entitled ‘Some Frequent Sub-Standard Forms’ which he claims (p. lll) are ‘found, generally speaking, in the language of the less well-educated members of society but adopted by educated people when communicating with the latter and sometimes among themselves for humorous effect’. Actually, many of these forms occur in the speech of the highly (English-medium) educated in informal situations, e.g. the use of discourse particles, especially la(h) and a(h), and some of them even in quite formal situations, e.g. omission of be as copula or auxiliary, variation in the use of prepositions. There is no suggestion in Tongue’s book that SgE is in any sense a continuum and that there is system in the occurrence or nonoccurrence of certain features. Despite these reservations, however, Tongue deserves credit as a pioneer and the book is a valuable source of examples. Furthermore, Tongue makes some interesting comments on the development of this localized variety and on the legitimacy of such varieties.

Annotation:
Safran examines the nineteenth-century publishing history of Jewish dialect joke books and Yiddish dictionaries and the generic links between dictionaries and joke books in Russian–Yiddish and English–Yiddish cases. In the 1870s in the Russian Empire and in the 1890s in the United States, Jewish speech style (Jewish Russian and Jewish English) was enregistered; that is, the concepts of ‘Jews’ and ‘Jewish speech’ took on new meanings. This was reflected in both dictionaries and joke books that, at least in some cases, were intended to teach their readers to be humorous as well as knowledgeable. These texts demonstrate the tension between dialect humour that is derogatory and that which embraces its subject; beyond this dichotomy, Safran argues that the confluence of Yiddish lexicography and Jewish dialect humour in the Russian Empire and the United States also reflected the marketing of distinctive spoken language by publishers for general readers. As Safran shows, the commodification of dialect humour and low-status spoken languages was facilitated by a nineteenth-century publishing boom fostered by cheap machine-made paper, fast printing techniques, the rise of literacy, the decline of book prices, the increase in railroad journeying, and the concomitant demand for portable entertainment.

Developing an open-source alternative to the UNIX operating system in the early 1980s, the master hacker Richard Stallman faced a dilemma: if he put his new GNU software in the public domain, people could copyright their improved versions, undermining the open-source cycle by taking away the freedoms he’d granted. So Stallman copyrighted GNU himself, and distributed it, at no cost, under a license that arguably was to have greater impact on the future of computing than even the software he was striving to protect. The GNU Emacs General Public License was the founding document of the copyleft. The word copyleft predated Stallman’s innovation by at least a couple of decades. It had been used jestingly, together with the phrase “All Rights Reversed,” in lieu of the standard copyright notice on the Principia Discordia, an absurdist countercultural religious doctrine published in the 1960s. And in the 1970s the People’s Computer Company provocatively designated Tiny BASIC, an early experiment in open-source software, “Copyleft—All Wrongs Reserved.” Either of these may have indirectly inspired Stallman’s phrasing. (He first encountered the word copyleft as a humorous slogan stamped on a letter from his fellow hacker Don Hopkins.) Stallman’s genius was to realize this vague countercultural ideal in a way that was legally enforceable. That Stallman was the one to do so, and the Discordians weren’t, makes sense when one considers his method. His license stipulated that GNU software was free to distribute, and that any aspect of it could be freely modified except the license, which would mandatorily carry over to any future version, ad infinitum, ensuring that GNU software would always be free to download and improve. “The license agreements of most software companies keep you at the mercy of those companies,” Stallman wrote in the didactic preamble to his contract. “By contrast, our general public license is intended to give everyone the right to share GNU Emacs. To make sure that you get the rights we want you to have, we need to make restrictions that forbid anyone to deny you these rights or to ask you to surrender the rights.” Freedom was paradoxically made compulsory.

Abstract The Forrest affair’s spectacle of passion made compelling public theater not just because many in the audience at large believed, as Willis surely would have wished, that they knew its celebrated principles intimately. As we have come to see, this imbroglio also rehearsed a riveting drama of cultural anxieties that took in such prickly matters as the proper relation of husband and wife, the propriety of fashion and refinement, and the prerogatives of honor. The affair assumed this significance, moreover, in light of an intense glare of commercial publicity that had become national, even international, in scope. As early as six months into the proceedings, the Georgia journal and Messenger reprinted a humorous vignette that suggested the unprecedented dimensions of this development. A traveler approaching a hut “fifty miles from anything in the Western Prairie,” so the story went, had asked its tenant of his opinion of a notorious murder case, the so-called Golphin claim, and the Forrest divorce suit. When he replied that he knew nothing of such matters, the stranger reportedly “burst into tears” and resolved to stay with the farmer for three weeks, that being the time news took to travel to this remote quarter. What was the reason for this outburst? So the account joshed: “He was a man who had been bored into madness by reading newspaper discussions on the three cases.” Of course, such complaints did little to arrest the march of publicity and probably only served to underscore the general preoccupation with celebrated legal actions that gripped the nation in the early 1850s. It was here, as much as on the concurrent political maneuvering surrounding the issue of slavery, that public interest settled in these early days of mass popular culture.

Since the immersion into the storyworld (Ryan 2001) necessarily includes following the principle of minimal departure (Ryan 1991), in the case of Calvino’s stories this process will be marked by the reader’s permanent attempts to follow the blend logic (which is recognized as pivotal for a text) and the frustration of those attempts due to the impossibility not to rely on different levels of experience levels in the process of semiosis. Our thesis states that this “fallout” from the blend logic will mean that the processes of completion and elaboration of a conceptual integration network will include the process of frame shifting (Coulson 2001), which will generate humorous effects on different grounding levels.

In this study, we conduct a thorough comparative analysis between artificial intelligence (AI)- generated humor and human humor. The objective is to acquire a more profound understanding of AI’s present capabilities in generating humorous text. We investigate the structural, sentiment, and linguistic patterns in jokes created by AI and humans, evaluating ’funniness’ and ’originality’ via a comprehensive annotation process. Our findings indicate that AI can produce humorous and occasionally novel content. Additionally, we employed the RoBERTa model for humor detection on a dataset consisting of 500 entries, including both human and AI-generated humor. This model demonstrated its proficiency in accurately categorizing a large dataset encompassing up to 200,000 entries with remarkable accuracy of up to 98%. Nonetheless, it lacks the emotional depth and originality commonly seen in human humor. The study underscores the challenge involved in developing AI models that can generate humor equivalent to human communication. Future research should focus on enhancing AI’s ability to create humor and further examine AI’s potential to adopt human humor strategies. Despite some limitations, this study contributes significantly to improving the humorous capabilities of AI models and the expandability of AI-generated humor.

In addition to its primary, objective function of individual identification, anthroponyms can also fulfil a social function, which implies the inclusion of several entities in a class based on their sharing – due to their belonging to the same ethnolinguistic culture – similar beliefs, habits, customs etc. This paper aims at recording the main names that Romanians employ in jokes (taken from the local onomasticon or from the name stocks of various ethnicities as a result of direct or indirect contact) and to identify their pragmatic functions. The name forms analysed are culture-bound specifying markers, i.e. names that are considered representative of the peoples to which this investigation refers. The author examines first names in humorous discourse, particularly in jokes. These onyms tend to lose their individual character and appellativise by means of deonymisation, as they metonymically define an ethnic/national community. At the same time, there are certain name substitutes, i.e. generic appellatives which behave as signs that identify every denotatum in a given community. Thus, several conclusions can be drawn about the way in which the Romanian people expresses/experiences multiculturalism on the level of the understanding/interpretation of the names (name substitutes) analysed.

Adascalita-Crigan, Lucia. „The narrative and its role in the creation of Alexei Grabco“. In Simpozion Național de Studii Culturale, dedicat Zilelor Europene ale Patrimoniului. Ediția III. Institute of Cultural Heritage, Republic of Moldova, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.52603/sc21.10.

Annotation:
In the caricature genre of the Republic of Moldova, Alexei Grabco asserted himself as a cartoonist who, through his graphic sheets, raised to a new value the artistic and spiritual dimension of humoristic-satirical drawings. His field of creation includes scenes taken from the society of his time, as well as the results of, subtle and critical analyzes on topics related to morals, religion, culture, etc. Even if his works are part of the realism of the time, in which caricaturists such as Iurie Rumeantsev, Nicolae Macarenco, Zigfrid Polingher, Leonid Domnin are also asserted, the plastic artist Alexei Grabco stands out and devotes himself to extensive compositions in which the narrative plays a major role in highlighting the humorous and philosophical aspect. By involving the narrative in the creation of caricatures, the artist contributes to the amplification of the visual impact of the message on the reader. Along with the landscape, in which the multitude of characters are included, the dynamism of the compositional elements, the grotesque treatment of the human figure, and the details come to support the unfolding/perception of the narrative thread. In this context, it is noted that the expressiveness of the movements, captured from reality, represents the sonority of the graphic work developed by Alexei Grabco. The narrative, in the case of satirical graphic sheets such as “Change of personnel” (1959), “Preparing for exams” (1959), “Dniester, on your bank…” (1959), "Take them to the market and return..."; (1960), "Passengers arriving by train at Comrat..."; (1960), is also made present through the prism of non-verbal means of expression: color, line, shape, texture. These, in turn, highlight the predominant emphasis of the narrative topics. At the same time, they generate junctions in the narrative with satire, humor, and mockery.
