AbstractTwo recent Hong Kong cases have highlighted the developing dissonance between family law norms in Hong Kong and other jurisdictions. The first entailed a challenge to the Hong Kong Director of Immigration’s refusal to recognize an overseas same-sex civil partnership as analogous to marriage. The second concerned a parental order for a child born overseas as a result of a surrogacy arrangement to an unmarried commissioning couple. These two cases challenged a specific conceptualization of the family in Hong Kong law: a preference for a heterosexual, married couple as the basis for the family unit. However, other common law jurisdictions would recognize the applicants’ claims to family status, as do international human rights principles. This article explores the scope and intersection of Hong Kong’s family law values, its private international law obligations, and the potential for invoking the public policy exception in these cases. In doing so, it tests the extent to which Hong Kong law’s conceptualization of the “Ideal Family” can be legitimately imposed to oust the claims of the “Other Family” to legal recognition.

Although the number of employees on overseas assignments accompanied by their families has increased steadily, little is known about the effects of this experience on family functioning. Japanese families on family-accompanied assignments living in Hong Kong were compared with families living in Japan (consisting of 135 and 248 paired partners, respectively). Applying an ecological framework, family functioning was examined using the Feetham Family Functioning Survey–Japanese (FFFS-J). Japanese wives living in Hong Kong rated family functioning lower, particularly in the area of “relationship between family and family members.” Between paired marital partners living in Hong Kong, the level of satisfaction in the area of “relationship between family and society” was significantly lower for wives than for husbands. This study provides application of the family ecological framework in families in a multicultural environment and identifies potential areas for family assessment and intervention that may of interest to health care professionals who care for families living away from their home countries.

Purpose – This study aims to develop a prototype for measuring the carbon emissions arising from the utilization of electrical appliances in a typical Hong Kong family in Kowloon District. Design/methodology/approach – To estimate carbon emission coefficients of energy consumption, the US building energy database books are referred to, which include home appliances’ energy end-use expenditure splits and energy end-use carbon splits. Due to differences in climate, geography and culture, the estimation equations are refined with assumptions and constraints based on the context of Hong Kong. Findings – By calculating the amount of carbon emissions from different electrical appliances, including space cooling, water heating, lighting, refrigeration, wet cleaning and cooking, it is estimated that the carbon emissions from major home electrical appliances in Hong Kong’s residential building sector is 1,805,397 metric tons. According to the findings of this study, by adopting the energy-saving guidelines for space coolers, refrigerators, water heaters and washing machines, carbon emissions in Hong Kong’s residential building sector can be reduced by 155,443 metric tons, or by 8.6 per cent of the current emission. Research limitations/implications – Due to limited resources, the case study does not cover residential units in other districts of Hong Kong, including the Hong Kong Island and the New Territories. In addition, relevant institutional and financing costs of implementing the proposed practices such as increasing the air-conditioning temperature and upgrading the lighting system should be further considered. Future research will be extended to the wider territory of Hong Kong and to obtain more cases for analysis. Originality/value – This paper provides a microscopic perspective on investigating the carbon emissions associated with energy consumption from major home electrical appliances in Hong Kong’s residential buildings. By unveiling the interaction between energy consumption and carbon emission, we formulate measures and strategies for implementing a cost reduction and carbon saving scheme of Hong Kong’s residential buildings, which is in line with government’s guidelines on green buildings.

In Hong Kong, children’s education has become an increasingly important issue for families; parents prefer to provide their children with early childhood education because it is vital for children’s comprehensive development and lifelong learning (Cheung, 2019). While previous studies have focused on the influence of parents’ socio-demographic factors and institutional factors on parents’ choice of early childhood education in Hong Kong (Fung & Lam, 2011; Yuen & Grieshaber, 2009), few studies have looked into other factors such as birth order position of the child within the family and length of residency in Hong Kong. This quantitative research aims to investigate factors affecting parents’ choice of early childhood education in Hong Kong. This paper summarizes factors that parents are concerned with while choosing a school, including parents’ socio-demographic factors and institutional factors. Birth order position of the child within the family and length of residency in Hong Kong are also analyzed in this study. The sample consisted of 2000 parents whose children received or are enrolling in early childhood education in Hong Kong. Data were collected via a self-administered questionnaire; descriptive analysis was used to analyze the socio-demographic characteristics of sampling, and chi-square test and binary logistic regression were carried out to identify factors affecting parents’ choice of early childhood education in Hong Kong. The statistical results reveal that family monthly income and birth order position of the child within the family are main factors affecting parents’ choice, and school hardware and school background have a slightly significant trend with parents’ choice of early childhood education in Hong Kong.

Abstract The communist takeover of mainland China in 1949 created physical, cultural, and political segregation between the mainland and Hong Kong, thus fostering a sense of dislocation and alienation among filmmakers who had migrated to Hong Kong from the mainland. The aim of this study is to explore the symbiosis between nostalgia and adaptation in Hong Kong cinema within the cultural landscape of 1950s Hong Kong, when Cold War politics was operating. With a detailed analysis of the 1953 Hong Kong film adaptation of mainland writer Ba Jin’s novel Family, and a comparative reading with the mainland film version produced in 1956, this study illustrates the cultural and historical significance of nostalgia in the development of Hong Kong cinema. This article further argues that nostalgic sentiment was expressed effectively through adaptations, while simultaneously improving these adaptations artistically and strengthening their political alignment with the mainland.

Can governments really do anything to strengthen families? What are the implications of different policies for both governments and families? Based on his family-policy responsibilities in Hong Kong and the U.S., the author brings his own personal historical and international lessons of experience for consideration by the proposed Hong Kong commission on family-friendly policies. Competing advocates of family policies might share common historical misunderstandings and value assumptions but they can differ in their definitions of family failure and how government can help families directly through general policies or through problem-specific advocacy groups. In addition to providing the first although abbreviated history of Hong Kong's Urban Family Life Survey of the 1960s, the author proposes three charges to be included in the current commission's terms of reference and work plan.

Migrant domestic workers provide essential services to the families they live with, but they are not considered a part of the family. As a group, they are not well-integrated into the society and often suffer from social isolation. In this article, we explore the potential health buffering effects of their personal network, in terms of family and friendship ties in both the local community and their home country. Existing literature provides inconsistent evidence on who and what matters more, with regard to the nature, strength, and geographic locations of individual personal networks. Using data from the Survey of Migrant domestic Workers in Hong Kong (2017), we find that family ties are extremely important. The presence of family members in Hong Kong as well as daily contact with family, regardless of location, are associated with better self-reported health. Only daily contact with friends in Hong Kong, not with friends in other countries, promotes better health. We also find evidence that the protective effects of family and friends networks depend on each other. Those foreign domestic workers with families in Hong Kong but also maintain daily contact with friends have the best self-reported health among all.

Family meals are beneficial for adolescent development, but evidence from Chinese populations has been limited. This study aimed to examine the associations between family meal frequency and adolescent perception of family relationship and compliance with parental guidance in Hong Kong. During the period from October to December 2016, a stratified random sample of 3359 students were recruited from 25 secondary schools in Hong Kong. Students completed questionnaires about family characteristics, relationship quality, and meal frequency by paper-and-pencil in class. Multiple regression analyses were conducted to examine the associations between family meal frequency and perceived family relationship and compliance with parental guidance overall and by subgroups. After adjusting for sociodemographic and school confounders, family breakfast and dinner frequency were significantly associated with adolescent compliance (breakfast: B = 0.07, p < 0.001; dinner: B 0.07, p < 0.001) and perception of family relationship (breakfast: B = 0.10, p < 0.001; dinner: B = 0.25, p < 0.001). Risk factors for infrequent family meals included older age, not born in Hong Kong, less educated fathers, and unmarried parents. Our findings support the associations of regular family meals with adolescent perception of high family bond and compliance with parental guidance. Interventions are needed to enhance quality family meal interactions in disadvantaged families.

With its unique geopolitical status and multicultural setting, Hong Kong has harbored different youth groups generated from cross-border migration with mainland China who are tied to different cultural values and identifications. This study aims to investigate how social capital embedded in the family, school, and community influences the cultural identities across three groups of Chinese youths in the educational system: local students; cross-border students (born in Hong Kong, living in the neighbor city of mainland China but attending schools in Hong Kong on daily commute); and new immigrant students (born in mainland China but living in Hong Kong for less than seven years). Using data from a cross-sectional survey with 2180 fourth- to ninth-grade students in Hong Kong, the logistic regression results suggest that family and community social capital play significant roles in shaping the cultural identity of youths. Implications of the research findings are discussed.

This paper examines the impact of family control on audit effort and audit risk as proxied by audit fees, the relation between the quality of the audit committee (AC) and audit fees, and how family control influences the association between AC quality and audit fees. Using a sample of Hong Kong companies from the 2005/06 fiscal year, we find that family-controlled firms have lower audit fees. The results also show a positive association between AC quality and audit fees in Hong Kong. Moreover, the association of higher AC quality with higher audit fees is stronger in family-controlled firms than in non-family-controlled firms. Collectively, our findings suggest that audit committees in family-controlled firms require a higher degree of external audit effort than do those in non-familycontrolled firms.

Data were collected from 387 14-yr.-old Hong Kong students (187 girls, 200 boys), who completed questionnaires to assess their perceptions of the various dimensions of family capital. Academic achievement was measured by performance in Chinese language, English language, and mathematics. The findings indicated that different combinations of the dimensions of family capital combined to contribute to moderate amounts of variance in adolescent girls' academic performance, whereas social capital was the only family measure to have a meaningful and significant modest association with adolescent boys' academic achievement.

Purpose Hong Kong entered an ultra-low fertility regime nearly two decades ago (Census and Statistics Department, 2013). The causes of ultra-low fertility in Hong Kong are the same as those in other developed economies (Tu and Lam, 2009). The phenomenon, in most of the western world and East Asian societies, is attributed to the incongruence between individual-oriented and family-oriented institutions (McDonald, 2000), or simply role incompatibility between work and motherhood (Stycos and Weller, 1967). One viable solution to alleviate role incompatibility is to introduce family-work reconciliation policies, including maternal and paternal leaves, subsidized child care and health care and work facilities that allow for breastfeeding (Lappegard, 2010). The purpose of this paper is to assess the family-friendly measures for enhancing fertility. Design/methodology/approach The paper analyzes the current demographic conundrum and makes recommendations. Findings Subsidized child care is an effective measure if it satisfies the five main criteria, namely, availability, accessibility, acceptability, cost, and quality, suggested by Rindfuss et al. (2003). Other family-friendly measures are inadequate in absolute terms and inferior to those of Asian countries such as Japan, Singapore, and South Korea (Ministry of Manpower, 2014; OECD, 2013). The possibility of shifting away from the ultra-low fertility regime remains doubtful, especially because low fertility is a combined effect of an increasing prevalence of single older women (Census and Statistics Department, 2014), a shift of the utility function of children toward other consumable goods (Inglehart, 1982) and a desire for achieving upward intragenerational and intergenerational social mobility (Ariès, 1980). Practical implications Since Hong Kong still subsides in the regime of the lowest-low fertility, an evaluation of the related family-friendly measures will provide constructive insights to the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government how to provide incentives to citizens to consider making childbearing decisions. Originality/value Because the introduction of family-friendly measures and gender ideologies are intractably linked (Brewster and Rindfuss, 2000), Hong Kong stays in the middle of nations of families and nations of individuals, influenced by western ideas and traditional family values. It is hence worthwhile to examine the effectiveness of different family-friendly measures.

The internal validation was performed by 100 repeats of 10-fold cross-validation while the external validation was evaluated in two other independent cohorts with the comparison of TIMI risk score and SMART2.ResultsA total of 48 799 participants with prior CVD events were included and externally validated by two other Hong Kong cohorts with 119 672 and 140 533 participants. The novel algorithm had better performance than the CPH model with a 0.69 C-statistic. The external validation showed great model calibration and clinical utility with 0.62 and 0.64 C-statistic, respectively, for the two cohorts; while both TIMI and SMART2 were underperforming. Medication treatments also had a strong correlation with recurrent CVD.ConclusionP-CARDIAC allows a more personalised approach for recurrent CVD prevention with dynamic baseline risk and concurrent medication effect. Such an approach with the potential for being recalibrated for other ethnicities will be used in primary care for managing CVD risk.

This research explores the phenomenon of firm performance as it relates to the business strategy, characteristics of Chinese Family Business (CFB) in Hong Kong's Electronic Companies, and technology strategy adopted by these firms. The motive to do this research is that there has been very little work on business strategy in export-oriented "developing economies - latecomer economies" as referred by Zahra and Covin (1993). There has also been little work on technology policy/strategy in Hong Kong, although there have been many suggestions that Hong Kong firms "need" to change and up-grade their business strategies. Added to this, Hong Kong firms have interesting characteristics (Chinese Family Business, CFB), which may be related to their business and technology strategies. Performance may be determined by the strategies they adopt. In this research, the key dimensions of "technology strategy/policy" are identified, including Imitation, Original Equipment Manufacturing (OEM) and Original Design Manufacturing (ODM), which are important in Hong Kong, but which have not been explored much in the literature. Hong Kong firms were selected in this topic since as China is found to become the world's manufacturing base and a lot of that industry, especially in Electronics Industry that this is an important topic.

Example 11 under Art. 53.3 of the ICN (McNeill et al. 2012) makes it quite clear that “chinensis” and “sinensis” must be treated as homonyms; thus the name C. chinensis D.Y. Hong is a later illegitimate homonym, for which a new name is proposed here.

The names of three genera of fossil Neuroptera are found to be junior homonyms; we propose the following substitute names: Glottopteryx nom. nov. for Glottidia Bode, 1953; Hongosmylites nom. nov. for Sinosmylites Hong, 1996; and Jurosmylus nom. nov. for Mesosmylus Panfilov, 1980. The family-group name Glottidiidae Bode, 1953 is unavailable and should be considered nomen nudum. The spelling of the family name Osmylopsychopidae Martynova, 1949 (not Osmylopsychopsidae) is grammatically correct and available. The family affinities of these fossil genera are briefly discussed: Glottopteryx may belong to Prohemerobiidae or Osmylopsychopidae; Hongosmylites to an undetermined psychopsid-like family; Jurosmylus with confidence to Osmylidae; Sinosmylites Hong, 1983 is most probably a member of Prohemerobiidae.

ObjectiveTo examine the associations of perceived interparental relationship, family harmony and family happiness with smoking intention in never-smoking Chinese children and adolescents in Hong Kong.Design, settings and participantsCross-sectional surveys of 15 753 primary (grades 4–6) and 38 398 secondary (grades 7–12) never-smoking students from 71 to 75 randomly selected primary and secondary schools in Hong Kong, 2012–2013.MeasurementsOutcome variable was smoking intention which denoted any affirmative response to smoke within the coming year or when a cigarette was offered by a good friend. Exposure variables were perceived interparental relationship and family harmony each measured on a five-point scale from ‘very good’ to ‘very bad’ and perceived family happiness on a four-point scale from ‘very happy’ to ‘not happy at all’. Potential confounders included age, sex, family structure, perceived family affluence, parental smoking and sibling smoking.ResultsIn primary students, the adjusted ORs (AORs) (95% CI) of smoking intention generally increased with more negative perception of the family relationship: up to 3.67 (1.91 to 7.05) for interparental relationship, 7.71 (4.38 to 13.6) for family harmony and 5.40 (3.41 to 8.55) for family happiness. For secondary students, the corresponding AORs (95% CI) were 2.15 (1.64 to 2.82) for interparental relationship, 2.98 (2.31 to 3.84) for family harmony and 2.61 (1.80 to 3.79) for family happiness. All p for trend <0.001.ConclusionsMore negatively perceived interparental relationship, family harmony and family happiness were associated with higher odds of smoking intention with dose–response relationships in never-smoking Chinese children and adolescents in Hong Kong. Children’s perception of their family relationship may be an important intervening point for preventing youth from initiating smoking.

This study aims to describe struggle of Nurdiana and Tira, two Indonesian female migrant workers who work in domestic sector in Hong Kong. They are part of thousands of Indonesian migrant workers in this country. Data from BNP2TKI shows that in 2019 only, there were 70,840 migrant workers placed in Hong Kong. Most of them are women. These women work in informal sectors, particularly domestic works. Using life story method, this research is able to find out that the main reason for both Nurdiana and Tira to work in Hong Kong is to fulfill their family needs and support education of their children. Their children are studying in Pesantren. Life story gives chances to both informants to talk more about their work, their relation with employers, family, friends, and challenges they face, including that of COVID-19. Their stories provide an understanding of the real situation faced by these two family heroes.

This study aimed to clarify the status of problematic behaviors among elderly patients with dementia at home and the associated burden on their family caregivers in Japan, Hong Kong, and Singapore immediately before the COVID-19 pandemic. The study included 563 family caregivers of elderly patients with dementia living at home in these three regions. Information regarding their demographic characteristics, such as age, gender, education level, income, marital status, and family status, was obtained. The Revised Memory and Behavior Problems Checklist, a 24-item scale for assessing problem behaviors, and the Zarit Burden Interview, a 22-item scale for measuring caregiver burden, were used alongside other relevant scales. The findings indicated that the majority of family caregivers were female and in their 60s across all three regions, while elderly patients with dementia were mostly female and living alone in their 80s. In addition, a significant proportion of these patients had comorbidities such as diabetes and other health conditions. In Japan, although the patients exhibited relatively intact physical function and a low degree of dementia, the caregivers experienced high-stress levels. The demographic profiles of family caregivers of elderly patients with dementia at home in Hong Kong, Singapore, and Japan were remarkably similar, particularly in terms of age and gender distribution. Furthermore, marital and employment statuses were comparable between Hong Kong and Singapore. While the previous studies have taken a broad view of Asia, focusing on Hong Kong, Singapore, and Japan in particular has facilitated the identification of clues for developing targeted countermeasures.

LANGUAGE NOTE | Document text in Chinese; abstract in English only. For historical reasons, medical practice in Hong Kong is regulated by a legal system inherited from the UK. The system is in the liberal tradition. Po alleged that the Health Authority’s “Guidelines on Life-sustaining Treatment in the Terminally Ill” illustrate the practice of the family co-determination model in Hong Kong. This paper argues that on the contrary, due to the legal constraints with which the guidelines must comply, they carry a very strong liberal flavor. There are limitations to documentary research. To understand the practice in Hong Kong, we need to conduct empirical studies on the views of healthcare professionals, patients, and their families, and how they make decisions in real-life situations. Due to the cultural influence from both the East and the West, some degree of pluralism survives in Hong Kong. My empirical study shows that the shared physician- and family-based decision making model is most popular in Hong Kong, while a significant minority opts for the liberal model.DOWNLOAD HISTORY | This article has been downloaded 59 times in Digital Commons before migrating into this platform.

This study examined the kinds of work‐family conflict experienced by female married professionals with children in Hong Kong and the coping strategies they had adopted. Data were obtained through 50 in‐depth interviews. The results revealed the general ineffectiveness of coping strategies being used by married women professionals. The percentage of women who attempted to use positive coping strategies designed around job changes was low, possibly due to their reluctance in negotiating for family‐friendly organizational policies. It appears that companies in Hong Kong extend little support to working mothers in managing the work‐family interface. Implications of the findings for women’s career progressions are also discussed in this paper.

This paper examines the choices married women in Hong Kong make concerning their employment status. We attempt to relate such choices to wives' role constraints in the family. It is hypothesized that, given their primary responsibilities for child care and domestic labor, married women are likely to choose an employment status that best accomodates their familial obligations. The analysis of recent census data supports this expectation. Waged employment and self-employment are found to be in conflict with women's domestic responsibilities, whereas outworking and unpaid work in family enterprises are not. The last two employment statuses are characterized by a higher degree of work flexibility and, thus, working wives are in a better position to balance the demands of family and paid work.

Objectives: Intimacy is a construct that has received limited attention in the Chinese context. This study aimed to validate the Intimacy Scale among older adults in residential care homes in Hong Kong. Methods: Seventy-eight Chinese older adults were invited to respond to the Chinese version of the scale and other measurements validating the scale. Results: The scale demonstrated good internal consistency and item-total correlation. Correlations supported the construct validity of the scale: significant positive correlations were found between perceived intimacy with the family caregiver and life satisfaction, presence of meaning and perceived family support. No correlation was found between intimacy and frequency of the family caregiver’s visit. Conclusion: We found the Intimacy Scale to be a valid measurement for assessing the quality of the relationship between older adults and family caregivers in the Hong Kong Chinese context. Assessing how older adults perceive the level of intimacy with family caregivers is important for helping professionals when working with older adults and their family members.

In Hong Kong, the number of South Asian (Indian, Pakistani, and Nepalese) older adults is projected to increase. However, academic and policy research in Hong Kong exploring the aging experience among ethnic minority older adults remains scarce. Drawing on in-depth interviews with South Asian older adults in Hong Kong, this paper examines the challenges they face in the economic, health, and social domains to maintain their quality of life in old age. Our analysis illustrates the significant cultural values, family obligations, and ethnic networks that shape the quality of life of South Asians in Hong Kong. These findings can help advance active aging policy in Hong Kong as they examine how to enhance the quality of life and facilitate social integration among ethnic minority older adults in this multicultural society.

This study examines the migration and settlement to the Onyang(溫 陽) region of Hong Man-jo family(洪萬朝家) of Pungsan Hong Clan(豐山 洪氏), who had lived in Onyang area in generations. Hong Man-jo Family’s migration to Chungcheong-do(忠淸道) was deeply related to the fact that he served as the governor of Chungcheong-do(忠淸道觀察 使) and establishment of his grave in Onyang after his death. The specific time of migration to his hometown (入鄕) was his son, Hong Joong-jing(洪重徵)’s days, right after when his father's grave was established. Pungsan Hong Clan, who migrated to Onyang like this, seems to have expanded the family's foothold and influence by entering the central government service, unlike other families securing a power base in the local society; this can be inferred from the phenomenon that there is no trace of their activities in the local society at all. On the other hand, they maintained the marriage relationship(婚脈) with the powerful aristocratic clan living in Seoul(京 華士族). However, when it became difficult to enter the government service through the state examination(科擧) in the 19th century, their target of marriage relationship was shifted to the families in regional areas, and their relationship with the local powerful aristocratic clans was significantly expanded. As such, Hong Man-jo family of Pungsan Hong Clan’s migration to Onyang is a valuable example to verify how powerful aristocratic clans in Seoul splintered and settled in the regional areas during the late Joseon Dynasty period.
