The article offers a brief outline of the history of "classical Chinese textual studies" (Zhongguo gudian wenxianxue), analyzes its content and structure, as well as its place and prospects in modern China. Classical Chinese textual studies emerged as a distinct modern academic discipline based on an ancient domestic tradition and under the influence of Western textual criticism of the 19th century. Since the 1920s, over the last hundred years, it has undergone several ups and downs but steadily continues to maintain continuity with a vast philological knowledge of imperial China, as well as to appropriate new approaches from Western humanities. The most developed areas of wenxianxue are the editing and publication of ancient texts, theoretical research in the foundations of textual studies, the creation and further exploration of subdisciplines, the analysis of research methods, and interdisciplinary perspectives, the study of the history of wenxianxue as well as various specialized problems. Overall, Chinese classical textual studies gravitate toward striving for comprehensiveness, interdisciplinary approaches, and practical issues. Currently, there is still a certain lack of innovation in exploring new areas, insufficient rigor and depth in theoretical research, the uneven development of individual areas of research and their somewhat regional character, nevertheless, textual studies manage to combine extensive practical work on "ordering ancient books" (guji zhengli) with a comprehensive study on the vast and immense Chinese textual culture.

The article analyzes and systematizes results of Russian research in German and Russian Expressionism for the past 17 years. The focus of the author are both great collective research projects on history and theory of Russian and German literature, which includes Expressionism as an integral part of the literary process, and individual studies of literary critics and linguists. The geography of Russian study of Expressionism covers research centers in Universities of Moscow, St. Petersburg, Yekaterinburg, Nizhni Novgorod, Chelyabinsk, Samara and in Austrian libraries (Yekaterinburg, Nizhni Novgorod). The research has four main directions. The first, the most traditional, focuses its forces on the study of new literary material and personalities, unknown literary texts and historical and literary facts. The second direction works with well-known texts, but operates with the latest scientific tools and provides a different understanding of the known material. The third direction is interdisciplinary and uses synthetic methods. The fourth is the comparative and typological direction, an important part of which is translation theory and practice.

The Krasnoufim Mari is a group of Ural Mari people, whose traditional clothing was marked by bright originality. They attracted the attention of travelers, researchers, local historians, ethnographers, art historians. The costume of the Ural Mari was repeatedly described by researchers of the 18th-19th centuries, and in the 20th-21st centuries it was the object of study of both Russian and Finnish ethnographers of different generations. The earliest evidences about the costume of the Ural Mari left by P.S. Pallas. In the 19th century the clothing of Mari people of Krasnoufimsky uyezd was described by G. Gorodskoy (V.N. Shishonko), S. Som-mier, D.P. Nikolsky. In the twentieth century the costume of this group of Mari ethnos was studied by T.E. Evseviev, S.N. Shitova, T.L. Molotova, as well as by A.O. Heikel and I. Lehtinen. In the 20th centure only one article devoted to the clothing of the Krasnoufim Mari people was published, and in the 21st century a number of richly illustrated articles and editions were published, the chapters of which were devoted to the costume of the Ural Mari people. Some of them are based on the materials collected in the Krasnoufim District of the Sverdlovsk Region. Three main bodies of sources on the topic were grouped by the researchers of the 18th-21st centuries: texts; collections of clothing items; photo-documents. In this article the history of formation of all three groups of sources is considered, as they were interrelated and represented often only different parts of a single research process.

Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) are characterized by chronic inflammation of the intestinal mucosa and unknown etiology. In this review, we identified three main eras in the IBD history. Between the 19th and the 20th century, the primary task had been the definition of the diagnostic criteria in order to differentiate the new entity from intestinal tuberculosis. In the 20th century, an intense and prolific therapeutic research prevailed, culminating in the introduction of biological drugs in the clinical setting. Since the beginning of the 21st century, traditional definition criteria have been challenged by holistic criteria in an effort to seek a still unattained cure. Centuries of worldwide efforts on IBD etiology and therapy search have culminated in this novel strategy.

The article explores the social and spatial phenomena in the development of three cities on the territory of Kosovo (and Metohija) — Pristina, Prizren and (Kosovska) Mitrovica in the history of the region in the 20th and 21st centuries. All these cities used to contain Turkish, Albanian, Serbian (and more broadly Slavic-speaking), Jewish and Gypsy quarters with shared urban (as opposed to rural) identities. The paper argues is that the interweaving (sometimes even conflicting) of two vectors — “inner logic” and “the logic of the victor” — forms the image of the city, thereby largely determining the everyday life and behavioral models of its inhabitants. Moreover, the evolving urban space itself can be viewed as an actor segmenting various social, ethnic and confessional communities. Thus, the author poses the following questions: What are the historical prerequisites for the transformations of the sociocultural landscape of the cities of Kosovo at the turn of the XX–XXI centuries? What spatial changes in urban space have followed the new social realities and the armed conflict in Kosovo? How can urban space be used to form and broadcast ideological attitudes by political elites?

The study of artistic imagery of children's costume by Ukrainian fashion designers of the 20th – early 21st centuries, establishment of features and patterns in the repetition of artistic and compositional solutions of children's costume, identification of established trends and innovations in the decoration of children's clothing. Methodology. Visual-analytical method, morphological, artistic-compositional and retrospective analysis were applied. Results. As a result of the analysis of children's clothing models of Ukrainian designers and brands, the artistic and compositional features of children's costumes and current trends in the decoration of children's clothing of the 20th – early 21st centuries are identified. It is determined that during this period, possibilities for the implementation of artistic imagery of clothing for children have expanded due to innovative materials and decoration technologies, but even in our time, traditional types of decoration that have been characteristic of children's costumes for centuries do not lose their relevance. The scientific novelty of the research consists in identifying features of artistic and figurative solutions of children's clothing by designers of Ukrainian fashion houses and leading trends in the decoration of children's costumes in Ukraine of the 20th – early 21st centuries. Practical significance. The collected materials and their analysis allowed to summarize information about artistic solutions and children's costumes by designers of Ukrainian fashion houses, which can serve as a basis for further research on the history of fashion and children's clothing design, information base for creating new collections of children's clothing.

The article is devoted to the historiographic problem of domestic design graphics in the history of Russian art. The analysing sources are structured in accordance with the main stages of the development of graphic design in Russia. This approach allows to visually trace the evolution of art history in the context of the corresponding cultural and historical era. In chronological order, the article examines the following periods: 18th — early 20th century, an era that can be called the protodesign period; 1920s–1930s, a period of active development of a new professional model, interrupted for the next twenty years; 1960s–1990s, a period of professional self-determination; the first decades of the 21st century, when the digital age begins and new horizons of research open up. The characteristics of each period are given from the point of view of the development of graphic design as a phenomenon of artistic creativity. The paper’s novelty is determined by the topic itself: the specifics of design in general and graphic design in particular have not yet been studied. It takes into account, basically, the range of problems studied in the Russian conventional history of art. The main tasks of the work: to show the path of development of art criticism in the work of Russian researchers; to systematize the volume and problems of the latest studies of art history over the past decades; to contribute to the formation of a more complete picture of the authors and the amount of accumulated research material. The article shows the path of development of art criticism in the work of Russian researchers — from artistic-critical to historical-theoretical comprehension throughout the 19th and 21st centuries. The foundations of fundamental research of the late 20th — early 21st century are revealed are systematized for the first time.

This article studies the evolution of the poetic imaginary of Chișinău City in the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries, which represents an overlap of images, of archetypal structures, which we integrated as theoretical support in the interpretation of urban poetic texts. Starting from the eight ensembles or archetypal structures of the imaginary applied to historical evolution, presented by Lucian Boia in For a history of the imaginary, we systematized the artistic images from the researched lyric in eight forms, attributed to each time segment, thus demonstrating the complexity of the urban imaginary and facilitating observing the metamorphosis of the image of Chișinău City during the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries. Through this system of archetypal structures, we interpreted the lyrical creations that capitalize on the Chișinău urban imaginary, identifying the change of perspective both on the image of the city, in the perception of the poets, and of the city itself, on a historical, political, social, economic and cultural level. Distanced to the point of oblivion (19th century), then raised on the pedestal of admiration (20th century), Chișinău becomes a familiar environment (21st century), an object of culture and not of worship, an architectural space concretized with the generation after 2000.

The paper is a review of scientific literature on the issues of the history and modern development of the abroad Russian schools, published in Russia mainly during the previous five years. The author considers several main historiographic complexes: generalizing studies in the field of the history of the Russian abroad in the 20th – 21st centuries, which touch upon the topic of education and upbringing; works on the history of education and pedagogy of Russian emigration in the 1920s – 1980s; publications on the formation and development of the Russian school abroad in the post-Soviet period. To date, the world of education and enlightenment of the Russian post-revolutionary emigration of the 1920s – 1940s in Europe and China has been most deeply studied. To a much lesser extent, the topic of the abroad Russian schools in the second half of the 20th – early 21st centuries is reflected in the scientific literature, including the development of education in Russian in the post-Soviet states. The article notes the demand for studying the issues of the Russian school abroad in the humanitarian scientific community of Russia, which is due to the influence of geopolitical processes in the early 2020s on the world of the Russian abroad, including its educational institutions, and the state policy of the Russian Federation in the field of supporting the Russian school abroad. Following the review a conclusion is made that there is a significant potential for scientific research of the Russian school abroad in the period of the second half of the 20th – early 21st century.

The article, based on materials from various sources and studies in Russian, English, French, and Persian, considers for the first time in modern Iranian studies in Russia the place and role of youth in the socio-political life of Iran in 20th–21st centuries. This period of the country's history was marked by a consecutive modernization of all the foundations of the state and society, in which the author identifies three stages: the struggle for the restoration of sovereignty and choosing ways to renew the country (1905-early 60s); modernization via “revolution from above” (early 60s – 1979); systemic crisis, social explosion, change of the State system; continuation of modernization under external pressure (1979 – early 20s of the XXI century). Contradictions and conflicts generated by this long and uneven process stimulate mass involvement of the younger generation of Iranians in political struggle, where they generally choose the most radical ways of civic self-realization. They played a prominent, sometimes crucial part in major events of Iran’s modern history, such as the movement for natinalization of the Iranian petroleum Industry (1949–1953); engagement in several reforms of 1960s–70s; revolutionary actions that brought to an end the Iranian monarchy; the Iran-Iraqi War. The young people’s potential for political activism to a considerable extent is due to their large and steadily growing share of population and relatively high level of education and professional competence of many among them. The literate and active young people still remain both the main generator of opposition sentiments and а basic resource of Iran’s dynamic development.

The article analyses the state of Chuvash prose in the mid-1980s – the first decade of the 21st century. In the course of the study, it was found that at this stage there is an intense search for modern landmarks, new forms and content in the Chuvash artistic literature. The following significant changes were revealed in the national prose – topics previously hushed up (social bottom, Stalinism, abuse in the Soviet army and the Afghan War) went public and new genre varieties (erotic, mystical, intelligent works) appeared; the possibilities and range of traditional literature expanded (lyrical-philosophical, lyrical-psychological, women's prose developed, psychologism deepened); literature with a complicated form of writing (postmodern works) has appeared recently; there has been an increased interest in the Chuvash national (history, mythology), etc. The author of the article comes to the conclusion that the turn of the 20th-21st centuries in the national Chuvash literature there has been a kind of transition period, during which the features of new prose, free from the previous ideology, are determined.

It has been established that the Donguz-Orun Glacier in the past had several clearly marked advances about 100, 200 and more than 350 years ago, which are expressed in relief in the form of uneven-aged coastal moraines. Despite the fact that the Donguz-Orun Glacier differs from many mountain-valley glaciers of the Caucasus primarily by its predominantly avalanche feeding and a moraine cover, almost entirely covering its surface, the main periods of its advances are consistent with the known large fluctuations of mountain glaciers during the Little Ice Age in the early 20th, early 19th, and, probably, in the middle of the 17th century. However, unlike most other Caucasian glaciers, the Donguz-Orun Glacier advanced in the 1970s–2000s. Te scale of its degradation from the end of the 19th to the beginning of the 21st century is also uncharacteristic for the Caucasus: the reduction in the length for longer than a century period is only about 100 m.

Abstract: The article analyzes the historical changes in the formulation of migration policies between the 19th and 21st centuries, summarizing the emergency of an “age of migration crisis”. The first section discusses why international migration poses a destabilizing problem for the Nation-state political conceptions. The second section emphasizes the intrinsic articulation of the global changes in human mobility and their political governance between the 19th and 20th centuries, identifying the four prevailing political paradigms on migrant cultural diversity that shaped public policies in the 20th century. The third and fourth sections deal with the emergence of the fifth cycle of international migration policies, which is characterized by the generalization of a global discourse that criminalizes migrants and refugees. The above will be followed by a critical perspective of the way migration has been treated in some Latin American countries.

This article reflects on the history of medicine as an academic discipline. It analyzes in particular the debates that took place in France between the second half of the 20th and the beginning of the 21st century. The first part recalls the main features of the discussions about the history of medicine since it was identified as an autonomous discipline up to the epistemological turn that, in the middle of the 19th century, opposed partisans of a “philological and scientific” to partisans of a “heroic” history of medicine. The second part deals with the debates that began in France in the 1960s-1970s over the legitimacy of a history of medicine written by physicians, and the foundation of a history of medicine written by professional historians. The third part proposes a reflection on the future of research and teaching in this field in France, and highlights the need for cooperation between physicians and specialists in the human and social sciences.

The term “Empire” as applied today to so different states in known history makes it difficult even to give the definition of empire. Historical knowledge begins with critics of the sources, reconstruction of events and ascertainment of facts. The construction of theory is possible only after the phenomenological description, whereas the thoughtless use of modern models of social sciences leads to modernization, distorting the evidences by inferences. Historians deal with totalities which are hardly susceptible to the use of nomothetic science methods. Using the Hegelian conception of Gestalt, the author demonstrates that the term “Empire” is applicable today to the three different totalities: to the monarchies that existed for many centuries and vanished as the result of the First World War; the imperialist powers of the 19th and 20th centuries, and to the superpowers of the 20th–21st centuries.

Abstract Pedagogical linguistics is a two-way bridge between linguistics and education, carrying information not only from linguistics to education, but also in the other direction, where linguistics needs to explore the impact of education on language. The paper reviews the history of this bridge, and especially in the 19th and 20th centuries, arguing that the bridge worked well in the 19th but that it disintegrated in the 20th with the rise of linguistics and education as distinct research fields. The challenge for the 21st century is to rebuild it in a sustainable way.

This essay provides an intellectual history for the cultural turn that transformed the human sciences in the mid-20th century and led to the creation of cultural sociology in the late 20th century. It does so by conceptualizing and contextualizing the limitations of the binary primitive/modernity. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, leading thinkers – among them Marx, Weber, Durkheim, and Freud – confined thinking and feeling styles like ritual, symbolism, totem, and devotional practice to a primitivism that would be transformed by the rationality and universalism of modernity. While the barbarisms of the 20th century cast doubt on such predictions, only an intellectual revolution could provide the foundations for an alternative social theory. The cultural turn in philosophy, aesthetics, and anthropology erased the division between primitive and modern; in sociology, the classical writings of Durkheim were recentered around his later, religious sociology. These intellectual currents fed into a cultural sociology that challenged the sociology of culture, creating radically new research programs in the late 20th and early 21st centuries.

In her keynote address to the Kristeva Circle 2014, Julia Kristeva argued that European Humanism dating from the French Revolution paradoxically paved the way for “those who use God for political ends” by promoting a completely and solely secular path to the political. As an unintended result of this movement this path has led, in the late 20th and early 21st centuries, to the development of a new form of nihilism that masks itself as revolutionary but in fact is the opposite, in Kristeva’s view. Kristeva analyzed the culture of religious fundamentalism as “adolescent” in the sense that the adolescent, in contrast to the child, is a believer rather than a questioner. Although the psychoanalytic consideration of religious fundamentalism added a new dimension to attempts to explain the increase of this phenomenon in the late 20th and 21st centuries, Kristeva’s subsequent linkage of fundamentalism to the revolts in French suburbs in 2005 and beyond fell short of an insightful critique by neglecting the historical context of France’s colonial history.

The history of the creation and development of the ornithological school in Kazakhstan («the School of Dolgushin»), the compilation and publication of the 5-volume ornithological summary “Birds of Kazakhstan” (1960–1974) and the subsequent formation of the main directions of ornithological research, faunistic, migratory, autecological, and environmental (foundation of protected areas, conservation of rare and endangered species, publication of Red Data books), are considered. The appearance and development of amateur ornithology and another social aspect of ornithology – the popularization of science and the objects of its study with the promotion of the protection of these objects at the boundary of the 20th and 21st centuries – are described. As weaknesses of ornithological science in Kazakhstan, there is a lack of knowledge on the study of bird communities, including their cartography; poor knowledge of the nutrition and winter ecology of birds; the lack of a general analysis of changes in landscapes of an anthropogenic nature in the second half of the 20th century and the impact of these changes on the composition of the avifauna, the number and distribution of individual bird species. Attention is drawn to the problems with the training of ornithological personnel in connection with the liquidation of the departments of zoology in the universities of the country.

In the 21st century, a view is beginning to take shape that the Savirs, not the Bulgars, were the predecessors of the Chuvash. The primary sources for this view are the works of Claudius Ptolemy, Aelius Herodianus, Ammianus Marcellinus, and others. Modern archaeological excavations support these historical facts. In this article, the author analyzes material that refutes the theory of the origins of the Savars/Savirs/Suvars in Siberia and confirms their habitation in the Caucasus. The basic strategies for constructing the framework of the Ukrainian national historical and historiographic narratives in the late 19th and early 20th centuries are analyzed in the first part of the paper. The nationalization of Ukrainian history and historical writing and the decisive role in forming the Ukrainian project of the pre-modern Little Russian nation are shown. The main mechanisms of the process are revealed, such as the historiographic expansion of the Little Russian intellectual range, the consolidation and ethnicization of regional history of the metropolises, the building of linear, teleological constructions, and the anthropologization of the ethnic community. Attention is paid to the technology of forming images of neighbors as contouring enemies. The authors demonstrate the methods for implementing the basic principles of constructing a national narrative in the practice of historical writing. Three competing strategies for creating large Ukrainian national histories that have had a decisive influence on the algorithms of modern didactic, affirmative and analytical historiography are presented. In the second part of the paper, contemporary approaches to the modernization of the traditional national narrative determined during the discussion of 2012−2014 are identified: 1) the deconstruction of national narrative, the rejection of the «tyranny» of asynchronous territoriality, and the development of dual research optics (the methodology of regional history and the integration of national history into the contexts of large cultural communities); 2) the decorative updating of the national narrative through the implementation of a multinational approach; 3) the middle position of «pluralistic indifference», consistent with the arguments of the extreme parties. It is noted that the current socio-political situation has formed an increased demand for the modernization of the ethno-national narrative of the early 20th century, which threatens to discard Ukrainian historiography to the standards of historiography at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.

This paper discusses translations of biblical passages into Kashubian, which originated in the Lutheran circles between the 16th and the 19th centuries, followed by translations made in the Catholic circles in the 20th and the 21st centuries. The history of these translations has been divided into two periods: “old translations” and “contemporary translations.” The former comprise various bibli[1]cal texts preserved in manuscripts and printed monuments, which came into being between 1586 and the second half of the 19th century. The fundamental texts of this period include the works by Szymon Krofey (1586), Michał Pontanus (1643), and Perykopy smołdzińskie (1699–1701). The old translations were done from German in the Protestant circles in West Pomerania. In turn, the “contemporary trans[1]lations” of biblical texts into Kashubian embrace translations from the second half of the 20th century, which were produced in the Catholic environment of Gdańsk Pomerania: from Latin (Mk 4:3-20) by Alojzy Nagel (1973), from Latin (four Gospels) by Rev. Franciszek Grucza (1992), from Polish (the New Testament and the Psalms) by Eugeniusz Gołąbek (1993–2007) and my own translations from Hebrew and Greek (the Four Gospels, the Pentateuch, Ecclesiastes) prepared in 2001–2020.

The paper identifies and analyzes the characteristic features of the development of Tajikjewelry art in the late 20th - early 21st centuries. The author believes that at this time, after a long period of oblivion, there is a marked way to restoration of many lost and nearly forgotten folk traditions in Tajik jewelry art. This period of time can be distinguished as a transitional period in the history of Tajik jewelry art development. This issue carries a significant value in the history of Tajikistan because the jewelry art in the period from the 80ies ofthe 20th century to the early 20th century was previously not subjected to a dedicated study, which results in certain gaps in the research of modern Tajik jewelry art. Studying the characteristics of the development of jewelry art at the turn of the 21st century and of the problems faced by master jewelers (zargars) at that time will aid in the future to identify the most efficient ways of developing this industry and facilitate its becoming one of the export-oriented areas, taking into account that the Republic of Tajikistan possesses all the necessary natural resources.
