Fertility Awareness Methods (FAM) are based on the observation of physiologically occurring symptoms, so-called fertility indicators, which include: cervical mucus, basal body temperature (BBT) and changes in cervical morphology/consistency. Observations of clinical symptoms in a female patient, which change depending on periodic hormonal fluctuations, were used to determine the first and second phases of the menstrual cycle and the period around ovulation. For many years, FAMs have been successfully used by women who want to plan their motherhood in accordance with their beliefs and chosen lifestyle, in an ecological manner, without pharmacological intervention or unnecessary medical treatments.FAMs have developed over the centuries and are now a well-documented field of reproductive medicine. Initially, FAMs were used only as a tool for planning or postponing the conception of a child, now they are more and more often perceived as an effective and easy-to-use tool in the diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of the therapy of cycle disorders and infertility. The aim of the study is to present the history of FAM development, to present groundbreaking discoveries and people to whom we owe the current state of knowledge about the symptoms of human fertility. A review of the medical literature was made, also referring to historical works, which included information on breakthrough discoveries in the field of human fertility. The selection of literature was made on the basis of a review of original papers and review publications in the PubMed and Google Scholar databases with the use of the following keywords: „Fertility Awareness Methods”, „Family Planning” and the „Pearl index”.

Abstract Ground-motion time histories for use in engineering analyses of structures in eastern North America are often simulated from seismological models, owing to the paucity of real recordings in the magnitude and distance ranges of interest. Two simulation methods have been widely used in recent years: the stochastic method and the ray-theory method. In the stochastic method, as implemented in this study, ground motion is treated as filtered Gaussian noise whose underlying spectrum is determined from an empirical region-specific seismological model of the source and propagation processes. In the ray-theory method, as implemented in this study, the ground motions are simulated by convolving an empirical source function with theoretical Green's functions for a specified crustal structure model. This article compares results of the two simulation methods for four well-recorded “calibration” events and assesses the applicability of the methods. The assessment is based on comparisons of ground-motion parameters from the simulated data with those of the actual recordings. Ground-motion parameters in the frequency range from 1 to 10 Hz are satisfactorily predicted by both methods. Averaged over the four events studied, the stochastic method underpredicts 1-Hz response spectra by 20 to 40% but accurately predicts response spectra for frequencies of greater than 2 Hz; it also accurately predicts peak ground acceleration and velocity. The wave-propagation method underpredicts 1-Hz response spectra by 10 to 40% but accurately predicts response spectra for higher frequencies; it overpredicts peak ground acceleration and velocity by 10 to 40%. Both methods are imprecise: the standard error of an estimate is a factor of about 2.2. The bias and standard error of an estimate for the wave-propagation method are generally slightly lower than for the stochastic method, if the focal depth of the event can be specified (i.e., as for a past earthquake). If the focal depth of the event is not known (i.e., as for a future earthquake) then the accuracy and precision of the two methods are about the same. The chief advantage of the wave-propagation method is its predictive power; since its attenuation function is derived from the focal depth and crustal structure it does not require knowledge of the empirical attenuation function. The chief advantage of the stochastic model is its economy and simplicity.

Annotation:
The title of this edited volume is slightly misleading, as its various contributions explore the potential for more historical analysis in organization studies rather than addressing issues associated with time and organizing. Hopefully this will not distract from the important achievement of this volume—important especially for business historians—in further expanding and integrating business history into management and organization studies. The various contributions, elegantly tied together by R. Daniel Wadhwani and Marcelo Bucheli in their substantial introduction (which, by the way, presents a significant contribution in its own right), opens up new sets of questions, especially in terms of future methodological and theoretical developments in the field. This book also reflects the changing institutional location of business historians, who increasingly make their careers in business schools rather than history departments, especially in Europe, reopening old questions of history as a social science. There have been several calls to teach more history in business education, such as the Carnegie Foundation report (2011) that found undergraduate business education too narrow in focus and highlighted the need to integrate more liberal arts teaching into the curriculum. However, in the contemporary research-driven environment of business and management schools, historical understanding is unlikely to permeate the curriculum if historical analysis cannot first deliver significant theoretical contributions. This is the central theme around which this edited volume revolves, and it marks a milestone in this ongoing debate. (In the spirit of full disclosure, I should add that even though I did not contribute to this volume, I have coauthored with several of its contributors and view this book as central to my current research practice.)

The article is devoted to the emergence and development of methods for calculating of daylighting. The emergence of mathematical, graphical, and instrumental methods of dimension and calculation of daylighting is shown in chronological order. The authors of these methods are named. Attention is paid to modern computer methods of calculation as well as of students’ light and engineering teaching process at different time intervals. The path that science has gone from choosing the size of light apertures in buildings by empirical methods and misunderstanding the need for accurate calculations of daylighting for people’s life and performing various functions to computer illumination modelling, the obligation to teach calculation methods to students of architectural and construction specialties is shown. The review covers the period from the end of the XIX century to the present day.

As immersive technologies have become ubiquitous today, traditional museums are finding success augmenting existing exhibits to increase visitors’ satisfaction. However, due to the immutable nature of house museums, and their tendency to place visitors in direct contact with historical artifacts, museum managers are seeking original approaches to cultural preservation. Implementing mixed reality systems into historic house museums is one such approach. The goal of this study is to develop and test a conceptual matrix that guides how designers use the affordances of mixed reality systems to create experiences that align with the range of historical narratives found in house museums. Experiences that can contribute to improving visitors’ satisfaction, self-interpretation, and understanding of the homeowner’s life and the community within which they lived. Building on human-centered design methods, the researcher developed and tested a prototype of an augmented reality (AR) mobile application centered on the Pope House Museum in Raleigh, North Carolina. The outcome of the research suggests house museum visitors should have agency in deciding the lens through which they experience the variety of historical narratives present in the home.
