Annotation:
Incomplete data present a serious problem in the modelling of event histories. Two particular forms of incompleteness are in evidence for data of this form. The first is due to recording of event times in interval-censored form. For single non-repeatable events this can be accommodated by using methods for modelling grouped survival times, such as those of Prentice and Gloeckler (1978) and Finkel- stein (1986). The other, more serious, problem relates to incomplete recording of follow-up measurements which would typically be included as time-dependent covariates in survival models. A number of methods exist for handling incomplete data. These include multiple imputation for variables subject to incompleteness and the application of iterative algorithms such as EM and the data augmentation algorithm. In this thesis, a method for handling both these types of incompleteness is derived based on multiple imputation combined with an adaptation of Finkelstein's method to handle time-varying covariates. This method is then investigated via Monte Carlo simulation and applied to data arising from the annual screening of those aged 75 years and over in the town of Melton Mowbray, as performed through the local general practice. Its performance is compared with that of more traditional approaches to modelling data collected in studies of this type. It is shown that parameter estimates can be considerably affected by the choice of approach to modelling. Whilst there are some problems with the implementation of this technique, particularly with reference to the model for the multiple imputation of the repeated risk factor values, it shows promise for application to studies of this form, particularly if combined with improved models for multiple imputations. The data from the annual screenings are assumed missing at random, but the techniques used could be extended to cover non-ignorable missing data mechanisms of known form.

In this thesis I’m writing about Dmitri Shostakovich’s only Viola Sonata. I’ve read about Shostakovich life and analysed the sonata. Shostakovich’s Sonata is one of the first pieces from the composer that I have listened to and gotten familiar with. It’s one of the most played viola sonatas and a one of a kind in Russian modern music. The purpose is to dig deep into the music and to understand it. Questions like “why am I playing this like this?” or “how should I do this?” regarding the interpretation of the music is the core of this study. The research is also trying to be of help to get an image of viola music overall and what is the place of Shostakovich’s Viola Sonata in this world. How the piece was reacting to the world around it and how it was affected by the history of viola music and what is its position in the future.

Annotation:
The event history analysis of debt portfolios concerns the repayment behaviours of accounts under the management of a debt collection team. Typically, an account can experience a series of events throughout the course of the debt recovery process, such as payment commencement, missing a payment, settlement, etc. In this thesis, we aim to provide a new perspective of modelling the evolution of the process and evaluating the collection performance using various statistical techniques in survival analysis and event history analysis. In the first three chapters, we describe the consumer debt purchase and collection industry, explore the data sets and review the related statistical methods to be used in the thesis. In Chapter 4, we investigate the directly settled accounts, which form a special group of accounts settled at the beginning of the recovery process. The time until commencement of repayment, which is considered as an important indicator for accounts’ repayment performance, is studied extensively in Chapter 5 using a number of survival analysis techniques. For accounts that have started to make monthly repayments, missing a payment is an interesting event to investigate. As such events may occur more than once, a specially structured multi-state model is explored in Chapter 6. Performance covariates are also introduced to the modelling procedure to reflect the series of historical events experienced. With an increased number of covariates, a tailored model selection procedure is proposed to achieve improved interpretability of regression results.

This thesis proposes to examine Voltaire as 'literary' historian and to compare the theory and practice of his histories with those of contemporary historiographers and historians. The works selected for focus are Voltaire's Histoire de Charles XII (1730) and Le Siècle de Louis XIV (1751). Section I, 'History Voices', centres on the enunciated theory and the actual practice of contemporary history. The prefatory writing of a selection of historians (from among Voltaire's sources) is analysed to identify a prefatory programme. This is subsequently compared to the contemporary practice of writing history and it reveals an intriguing degree of divergence concerning attitudes towards authority, objectivity and truth. Similar analysis is applied to Voltaire's theoretical writing on historiography, revealing a 'historian's voice'. While Voltaire and his contemporaries all discuss questions of the historical author, subject, style, truth, aims and reader, actual contemporary history (excluding Voltaire) discloses a monotonal texture, uniquely concerned with the chosen subject of history. Section II, 'Story Voices', focuses on Voltaire's use of different textual levels in his composition of the story of his histories, that is, the telling, evaluation and presentation of historical and non-historical material within history. Analysis is made of structure, style, use of anecdotes, voices and echoes to investigate the development of a polytonal history which is simultaneously historical and contemporary, analytical and polemical, general and personal. In comparing Voltaire's histories to contemporary histories and to his own enunciated theories of historiography, textual analysis also reveals ambiguities in fact and fiction, in the historical and the storical, in historiography and narrative. A salient feature of the literariness of Voltaire's histories is the presence of duality, ironic tone and polytonal voices, all of which are audible beneath and within the official history. This literariness underlies and comprises the very vitality of Voltaire's history.

Annotation:
There are a variety of archaeological questions, which are difficult to assess by traditional archaeological methods. Similarly, there are genetic and population genetic questions about human evolution and migration that are difficult to assess by studying modern day genetic variation. Archaeological genetics can directly study the archaeological remains, allowing human history to be explored by means of genetics, and genetics to be expanded into historical and pre-historical times. Examples of archaeological questions that can be resolved by genetics are determining biological sex on archaeological remains and exploring the kinship or groups buried in close proximity. Another example is one of the most important events in human prehistory – the transition from a hunter-gatherer lifestyle to farming - was driven through the diffusion of ideas or with migrating farmers. Molecular genetics has the potential to contribute in answering all these questions as well as others of similar nature. However, it is essential that the pitfalls of ancient DNA, namely fragmentation, damage and contamination are handled during data collection and data analysis. Analyses of ancient DNA presented in this thesis are based on both mitochondrial DNA and nuclear DNA through the study of single nuclear polymorphisms (SNPs). I used pyrosequencing assays in order to identify the biological sex of archaeological remains as well as verifying if fragmented remains were human or from animal sources. I used a clonal assay approach in order to retrieve sequences for the HVRI of a small family-like burial constellation from the Viking age. By the use of low coverage shotgun sequencing I retrieved sequence data from 13 crew members from the 17th century Swedish man-of-war Kronan. This data was used to determine the ancestry of the crew, which in some cases was speculated to be of non-Scandinavian or non-European origin. However, I demonstrate that all individuals were of European ancestry. Finally, I retrieved sequence data from a Neolithic farmer from the Iberian Peninsula, which added one more facet of information in exploring the Neolithization process of Europe. The Neolithic Iberian individual was genetically similar to Scandinavian Neolithic farmers, indicating that the genetic variation of prehistoric Europe correlated with subsistence mode rather than with geography.

This study critically examines the political, social and institutional settings in which archaeology was introduced in Namibia. I re-examine the idea of archaeology as a scientific and objective discipline that could be practiced without input from the knowledge systems of local communities. Archaeology developed alongside colonialism in Africa. Archaeology became an apparatus for knowing about the strategic resources that could be found in Namibia. Through the processes of recording sites and artefacts archaeology provided information that was useful to the colonial administration.

In this thesis I argue that the recent introduction and construction of the Australian Curriculum has been characterised by a lack of relevant and meaningful conversations about curriculum. While sites for public and professional consultation have been numerous, items for discussion have largely been predetermined and narrow. Rather than allowing space for sensible conversations about the range of purposes of a new curriculum and the type of curriculum theory that might best achieve those purposes, the Australian Curriculum has been implemented as though there are no relevant, alternative visions of curriculum, apart from that fashioned by a neoliberal agenda. Using the tenets of critical theory and critical pedagogy as well as autoethnographic narrative, I argue that the current curriculum is a ‘thin’ curriculum that is likely to have a number of worrying implications for teaching and learning, for the role of students and teachers and that it is likely to marginalise many students and communities from schooling. Using the example of the Australian Curriculum: History, I conclude that it is possible and necessary to consider a ‘thick’ curriculum that is both rigorous and responsive to diverse local contexts. But, before that can happen, we need to claim a space for conversations about curriculum and to recognise that alternative visions of curriculum are not only possible, but also necessary if we are to more fully engage a greater number of students in the process of learning.

School has an important role in contributing to digitalization, where digital tools can increase students' knowledge development. The aim of this study is to study how popular-historical podcasts can be used in history teaching at upper secondary level. Furthermore, the starting point for the study is to investigate how the content of podcasts can promote a historical awareness. The popular-historical podcasts is analyzed with the help of Ernesto Laclau and Chantal Mouffe's discourse theory and Jürn Rüsen's theory of history awareness. In order to be able to fulfil the analysis and to understand the content, the study takes inspiration from a qualitative discourse analyzis. The results of the study show that the content of the podcasts in various ways promotes Rüsen's historical awareness and can contribute to promoting a historical awareness. They affect content as actors, causal relationships, connections to present and future, and different historical views. The results also show differences in the podcasts discourses where the P3 history is more easily understood and has a clearer story while the history podium's language is more difficult. Consequently, there is a struggle between how different characters can be determined. History awareness is affected in a clearer and broader way in the History podium and can therefore be considered to affect history awareness to a greater extent while P3 history promotes it in a more understandable way. The conclusion is that the podcasts can be used to promote history awareness and be used as digital teaching material.

Annotation:
This thesis reviews the parameters required to perform linear response history analysis according to Chapter 16 of the American Standard ASCE 7-10. A careful analysis is presented about the selection of ground motions using real records and using artificial records generated such that their response spectrum matches with a defined target spectrum; three different techniques are studied for the generation of these artificial records. Also, this document revises the scaling of ground motion techniques in the American Standard ASCE-7 as well as in other seismic codes. It presents a detailed analysis of the variables influencing the scaling of ground motions, and it suggests a new scaling technique for linear response history analysis. The assumptions made establishing the flexibility of the diaphragms are also analyzed as well as dynamic methods to include accidental torsion when doing a linear response history analysis. Other modeling issues such as the orientation of the ground motion axis, scaling of element forces and displacements, orthogonal loading, solution techniques, P-Delta effects, modeling of the basement, and calculation of drifts are also studied in the context of linear response history analysis. The thesis concludes with suggested code language for linear response history analysis intended to be considered in future editions of the American Standard ASCE 7.

“History matching” (model calibration, parameter identification) is an established method for determination of representative reservoir properties such as permeability, porosity, relative permeability and fault transmissibility from a measured production history; however the uniqueness of selected model is always a challenge in a successful history matching. Up to now, the uniqueness of history matching results in practice can be assessed only after individual and technical experience and/or by repeating history matching with different reservoir models (different sets of parameters as the starting guess). The present study has been used the stochastical theory of Kullback & Leibler (K-L) and its further development by Akaike (AIC) for the first time to solve the uniqueness problem in reservoir engineering. In addition - based on the AIC principle and the principle of parsimony - a penalty term for OF has been empirically formulated regarding geoscientific and technical considerations. Finally a new formulation (Penalized Objective Function, POF) has been developed for model selection in reservoir history matching and has been tested successfully in a North German gas field

Museums have, in recent years, experienced an increasing amount of pressure to fulfill their role as public institutions for both education and entertainment. For museums to ensure their success in this role, they must constantly investigate their operations in order to maximize their effectiveness. Common museological theories and literature are shared by museum professionals across the globe, roughly forming an ideal standard for museums. This study argues, however, against an ideal standard in favor of museums being evaluated in their own right. Elements of Stephen E. Weil's system of evaluation described in Making Museums Matter (2002) â and specifically his four evaluative criteria of purposiveness, capability, effectiveness, and efficiency â are employed in this study in order to evaluate four history museums â the building for the protection of the royal tombs of Vergina, Greece, the Museum of Byzantine Culture in Thessaloniki, Greece, the Archaearium at Historic Jamestowne, Virginia, and the Museum of the Confederacy in Richmond, Virginia. The use of these four criteria allows for a basic understanding of the ways in which the museums in this study have become successful despite their variance from an ideal standard.

Savage, Christopher Jon. „Implications of Dune Pattern Analysis for Titan's Surface History“. BYU ScholarsArchive, 2011. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/3077.

Der volle Inhalt der Quelle
Annotation:
Analyzing dune parameters such as dune width and spacing can be useful in determining the reaction of dunes to changes in atmospheric and sedimentary conditions currently and in the recent geologic past. Dune parameters, dune width and spacing, were measured for linear dunes in regions across Saturn's moon Titan from images T21, 23, 28, 44 and 48 collected by Synthetic Aperture RADAR aboard the Cassini spacecraft in order to reconstruct the surface history of Titan. Dunes in the five study swaths are all linear in form, but lack superimposed or flanking dunes. They have a mean width of 1.3 km and mean crest spacing of 2.7 km, wider and farther apart on average than similar terrestrial dunes in the Namib and Agneitir Sand Seas though larger linear dunes exist on Earth. Because of the lack of superimposed and flanking dunes and their size, Titan's dunes are classified as very large simple linear dunes. The large size, spacing and uniform morphology are all indicators that Titan's dunes are very mature and long-lived features. The ratio of dune width to spacing for Titan's dunes is similar to that found in terrestrial dunes in that dune spacing tends to be twice dune width. In addition to being similar in size, this is further evidence that terrestrial dunes can be used as analogues for Titan's dunes and vice versa and that the essential dune-forming processes are the same on both bodies. Dune width and spacing decrease northward, which is attributed to, but not limited to, increased maturity of dune fields to the south or increased sediment stabilization to the north. Sediment stabilization may be caused by Titan's asymmetric seasons and a net transport of moisture from south to north. The majority of dunes have spacings consistent with an upper limit of 2 to 4 km established by the atmospheric boundary layer, further evidence they are mature. Dunes are more widely spaced in the south are evidence they have been growing toward a steady state for a longer period of time than those in the north. Titan's large linear dunes have long reconstitution times. This is in part due to the fact that winds sufficient for saltation are reached only near the Titan equinox every 14 Earth years. Based on rates for similar terrestrial dunes the reconstitution time for Titan's dune is 600,000 Earth years or more, and therefore substantial changes in dune form should not be observable over Cassini's lifetime. Cumulative probability plots of dune parameters measured at different locations across Titan indicate there is a single population of dunes on Titan. This suggests that, unlike analogous dunes in the Namib and Agneitir Sand Seas, dune-forming conditions that currently exist on Titan are either the only dune-friendly conditions in the moon's history, or the current conditions have been stable and active long enough to erase any evidence of past conditions.

The thesis explores how the theory of Securitization, defined by Buzan, Wæver and de Wildes, can be applied to the discourse related to CCTVs in the subway of Stockholm. It analyses 20 articles from the major Swedish newspaper Svenska Dagbladet from 1995 to 2015. Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis is used as main methodology, scrutinizing the texts from a discourse practical perspective, text perspective, and sociopolitical perspective.   The main finding from the thesis is that the theory of Securitization needs to be enhanced with a “Politically Non-controversial” dimension and a “Politically Controversial” dimension, extending the previous “Political” Securitization dimension. With that updated Securitization definition, the discourse of the articles in the thesis follows the model of Securitization. Thus, the CCTV discourse regarding the subway of Stockholm has from 1995 to 2015 transformed from politically non-controversial, to politically controversial and finally securitized.

Annotation:
This thesis seeks to explore history teacher engagement in debates surrounding the 2013 draft National Curriculum for History and locates these in the wider context of English history teacher identity. The 2013 draft curriculum, which was announced in February, was withdrawn in August 2013 following complaints of political bias (see Smith, 2014). This “curriculum war” might be interpreted – as others have been (e.g. Crawford, 1998; Taylor & Guyver, 2011) - as an attempt by both the left and right to frame a curriculum which furthered their political metanarrative, but this research shows that such views are oversimplifications. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight history teachers in the north-west of England who actively opposed the draft curriculum and their responses were analysed using van Dijk’s (2009) sociocognitive approach to critical discourse analysis. These responses uncover a complex nexus of motivations in which political opposition is only a small strand. Instead, the strongest motivation was a deep loyalty to the epistemological and methodological underpinnings of their subject (Bernstein, 1999). In opposition to the narrow nationalist conception of school history, the interviews indicated strongly the existence of a social realist (Young, 2008) counter-hegemonic discourse which informs and underpins a vibrant history teaching community. This shared discourse argues that historical knowledge is constructed and contested, and that it should be taught as such (Lee, 1991). In this paradigm, the draft curriculum was opposed not because it advanced a rightist narrative, but because the concept of a single narrative was itself considered inherently unhistorical. The epistemological unity of the history teaching community contributes to a project-identity of resistance (Castells, 1997) which is further bolstered by the research activities of the Schools History Project and the Historical Association. A Gramscian (1971) analysis is used throughout, but history teachers are not found to be, in the main, Marxists. Gramsci’s work instead provides the framework for understanding the nature of the history-teaching community and the mechanics of its resistance.

The dominant narrative mode in Ainu studies today stresses an activist agenda that, although worthwhile, limits the potential for new research in the field. In this thesis, I analyze historical accounts of the development of Ainu bear carvings as a case study of the characteristics of the dominant activist mode and present an alternate narrative in order to demonstrate the need for a variety of approaches to Ainu research.

The activist narrative mode is structured to engender sympathy for Ainu people and respect for their cultural heritage. Activist accounts of Ainu bear carvings often claim that the carvers were pressured by the Japanese tourist industry to violate religious taboos against producing realistic depictions of bears. In this way, the carvings serve as a symbol of oppression of Ainu people under Japanese imperialism. At the same time, activist scholars state that the Ainu bear carvings followed a linear progression from tourist souvenirs to respected works of “fine art.” Thus, the carvings also reinforce optimistic projections regarding the future status of Ainu culture and socioeconomic condition.

My alternate narrative focuses on the complexities and ambiguities in the field and avoids judging events in moral or sympathetic terms. I explore a broad range of contextual issues, tracing the regional production of wooden bears from the paleolithic ancestors of Ainu people, examining the role of bears and woodcarving in Ainu culture, analyzing Ainu interactions with Japan, Russia, and other neighboring empires, and investigating the commodification of bear carvings as tourist souvenirs.

Activist narratives have contributed a wealth of valuable research to the field of Ainu studies and remain a useful tool for promoting social and cultural equality for Ainu people. However, automatic conformity to the dominant activist mode perpetuates the obfuscation of certain details in Ainu history, including the diversity within Ainu and Japanese cultures and institutions, instances of political cooperation between Ainu and Japanese communities, and unanswered questions regarding the complex development of Ainu cultural practices and beliefs. Although any historical account (including this thesis) inherently simplifies its subjects, varying our narrative approach helps us to identify and fill some of the gaps.

Annotation:
Execution history (EH) analysis is a major unexplored area in the development of debugging technology. In this dissertation we develop a theoretical foundation for incorporating EH analysis into the process of automatically debugging programs written in imperative, strongly typed, procedure oriented languages. This foundation includes the construction of a model for EH representation, an analysis of run time errors within the model, and the development of an approach to the use of EH analysis in automatic debugging. The model represents an execution history as a sequence of state vectors. Each vector contains both the values of program variables at a particular point in a computation and additional information that is used in the debugging process. Within this model, run time errors are classified by their effect on program termination, and characterized by their appearance within the EH. Based on this classification and characterization, techniques for detecting errors within an EH are presented. These techniques form the basis of an approach to automatic debugging in which a deterministic analysis locates errors in the execution history and, based on the results of this search, heuristic techniques perform automatic fault Localization.

From the beginning and throughout Islamic history, mut-c-a marriage has been a controversial issue, the subject of constant dispute between the jurists of the different legal school in Islam. The view that mut-c-a marriage was permitted by the Prophet and practised by the most prominent Companions in the early period of Islam is not disputed by any Muslim jurist. Rather, the debate between Sunnî and Shî-c-î jurists centers around its legality after that early period.

In the United States, learning history has traditionally been rooted in a transmission-oriented view of teaching and learning. From this perspective, teachers transfer their historical knowledge to their students. Alternatively, this dissertation positions itself within constructivist theories of teaching and learning, where learning is a process of knowledge construction and students make meaning from their experiences. This dissertation seeks to advance our understanding of how social studies teachers with constructivist beliefs learn to teach school history and the influence that teacher education has, or does not have, on their constructivist beliefs and related practices. This interpretive study employed a multiple-case design that examined the development of four beginning history teachers over time. Data were collected longitudinally from the beginning of the participants' student teaching until the end of their first year in the classroom. Through a qualitative cross-case analysis of interviews, observations, classroom artifacts, and written reflections, this study had several key findings. First, issues of historical content knowledge and classroom control were major barriers for implementation of constructivist-oriented practices in beginning teachers' classrooms. Second, contrary to some previous studies, learning to teach in transmission-oriented contexts did not result in the diminishing ofbeginning teachers' constructivist beliefs. Through reflective practice, these teachers used their experiences to advance their understanding of teaching. Third, although these teachers developed strong conceptual tools in their teacher preparation program, they expressed a lack of practical tools, which could have helped them better and more frequently use constructivist-oriented practices in their classroom. Finally, lack of practical tools expanded into the teachers' inability to teach for historical thinking and historical inquiry, two constructivist-oriented concepts in history education.

Annotation:
This thesis is an analysis of the World War II television drama COMBAT!, which ran from 1962 to 1967, and how this program dealt with and addressed the national memory of the Second World War. The way in which the “Good War” is remembered has changed over time. In the years of the conflict and immediately following its conclusion, there was a sense of zealous patriotism surrounding the war, but as our culture changed, a more critical approach was taken. This paper examines the way in which the show deals with its two main subjects – the American forces and the Germans which opposed them. This depiction is analyzed and deconstructed through the lens of historical or collective memory, a concept which deals with how a group of people view their past. Particularly, COMBAT! uses an air of complexity and nuance in how the combatants are treated that was not found in many earlier depictions of the war. It is important for the reader to understand the thinking behind the way in which this program deals with the memory of World War II. This thesis dissects the intended messages that arise from the show’s portrayal. The paper concludes with an examination of how this more critical view can be applied to the portions of the war outside of COMBAT’s scope. Attention is also paid to the way in which this attitude of remembrance has continued on into future works that deal with both World War II and the wars that followed.

Annotation:
This thesis will analyse the framework of ideas that legitimised the new Sami politics from 1980-1990, and utilises a comparative analysis to explore how and why the similar states of Norway and Sweden, developed dissimilar Sami policies and had dissimilar official views of the Sami during this period. Sami policy and the states’ official view of Sami identity will be examined through three chosen themes: attitudes towards reindeer herding Sami identity, the establishment of the Sami Parliaments, and the different attitudes to the International Labour Convention no. 169 on Indigenous and Tribal peoples. This will explain the different trajectories Sami policy took during the period analysed, and will show that Norwegian Sami policy relied to a greater extent on international norms of indigenous rights, which meant that Sami policy was treated as indigenous policy only. Additionally, the Norwegian state developed a view on Sami identity as being more heterogenous, but focused on the geographical area of the county of Finnmark in order to resolve Sami demands on rights to land and natural resources. Comparatively, Swedish Sami policy will be shown to have relied on national norms of Sami policy that had been formed in the 19th century, based on the segregation of reindeer herding Sami and non-reindeer herding Sami. This will be shown to have affected the states’ view of the Sami as dually indigenous and a national ethnic minority, which to some extent hindered the Sami in Sweden from gaining national and international recognition as indigenous.

Annotation:
This dissertation follows the history of functional ideas and their pedagogy, illuminates with many examples the implementation of my updated system of Functional Analysis, and discusses the pedagogical implications that this updated system implies. The main goal is to update a system of labeling to be as pedagogically friendly as possible, in order to assist students and teachers of harmony to more easily and enjoyably learn, teach, and engage with common-practice tonal harmonic practice. Example syllabi, assignments, classroom demonstrations, and long projects are also included, and each aspect of the labeling is carefully discussed as it is presented. By surveying the history of functional thinking in music theory, we find that desire to analyze for function is not a new idea, and has been a goal of many theorists and harmony teachers for centuries. However, the current methods for instructing in function still leave students confused or baffled, as they struggle to match functional concepts to labels that do not exemplify their analysis goals and methods that insist on starting from tiny detail instead of coming from a more complete musical perspective. The elaboration of each detail of my Functional Analysis system shows how each part of Functional Analysis has been designed to help make harmonic analysis quicker, easier, more intuitive, and more personalized. The greater pedagogical implications on a larger scale involving courses and curricula are also covered, informed by my experience both as a teacher of today’s standard system and from teaching Functional Analysis in the classroom.

Annotation:
Whilst a copious literature testifies to the value of subfossil insect analyses in the interpretation of Holocene deposits (Buckland Ind Coope, 1991; Elias, 1994), most of this results from studies of Coleopterous material . Although Dipterous fragments are often abundant in the same deposits, they have received little attention. This Thesis is concerned primarily with establishing the great value of Dipterous subfossill and the potential for advances in this field. Dipterous morphology is considered and features of primary value in the identification of subfossil material is highlighted. Problems with the traditional taxonolic criteria, insofar as identification of such material is concerned, are discussed, and new approaches are recommended. Thus, a brief survey of the morphology of Tipuloid larval head-capsules, and a revisional paper on the puparia of British Sphaeroceridlt, are included. The study includes many case-studies from excavations across the region, spanning the last 5,000 years. Although there, is an inevitable bias in favour of archaeological sites, and hence of the more synanthropic elements of the Dipterous fauna, situations un associated with human settlements are also discussed. A major objective in this work was to examine the role of Diptera in the insect colonisation of lands left in a state of tabula rasa by receding glaciations, The geographical aea concerned here comprises the entire North Atlantic continental seaboard and islands from France and Labrador northwards. This area saw the major western expansion of the Celts, Romans and the Vikings, from whose settlements much of the Dipterous material from archaeological deposits was obtained for this thesis. It also saw the eastern migration of Inuit cultures from the Canadian Arctic into Greenland. Dipterous subfossils tell us much of the living conditions and economies of these peoples.

Barrera, Jennifer. „The Millers : historical analysis of an early Australian colonial family“. Thesis, Federation University Australia, 2020. http://researchonline.federation.edu.au/vital/access/HandleResolver/1959.17/175252.

Annotation:
In July 1823, a family originally from Derry-Londonderry, Ireland, embarked on the long journey from Chatham Dockyards, along with the first despatch of troops from the 40th Regiment, to the colony of New South Wales. Lieutenant Henry Miller would become the first commandant of the Moreton Bay penal settlement. But by August 1825, Lieutenant Miller had been replaced—in effect, dismissed—and the family relocated to Van Diemen’s Land. This thesis explores the growing importance of family history in the twenty-first century as a popular pursuit for engaging with and writing history. It highlights family history’s potential for historical inquiry and its capacity to unpack settler colonial history and the role of the individual in Empire. It offers fresh historical perspectives on Australia’s colonial experiment. The research uses the combined methodologies of microhistory, biography and family history to recover the lives of Henry Miller, his wife Jane, sons Henry and Mars, his father the Reverend Miller, as well as, the diverse and interconnected lives of Captain John Townson, his brother Robert, convict Sarah Griggs, and her children. As a number of scholarly histories in the last decade have shown, family history as an approach for engaging with the past continues to gain attention globally and offers powerful benefits to those who engage with it, for the family historian and academic historian alike. The six core chapters that comprise this thesis demonstrate the importance of family history research to deepening our understanding of the past and its capacity to change the way we think and write about the past. This thesis aims to make a substantial and original contribution to Australian colonial history by recovering powerful lost voices and identities, and connecting the past with the present in a more intimate and accessible way through the exploration of a colonial family.
