The Baroque Style shop-houses has become a local architectural characteristics in Qi Shan district, Kaohsiung city, Taiwan today. However, the residents had carry out the building alterations styles themselves in unification to improve the living environment which mostly depend on their own needs to renew or reconstruction and resulting the derogation of historical features. Therefore, by way of “partially preserved and partially alterations” to conducted the landscaping preservation of shop-houses, while “historical landscape preservation line” and “mass control” as the two ways of research methods in simulated preservation and alterations of building. Look forward to the equilibrium of preservation historical landscaping for shop-houses and building alterations to consistent both needs of preservation and alterations. From two case studies on the traditional shop-house, in Qishan Dist, Kaohsiung city, Taiwan, we surveyed to understand what spaces the dwellers need, when they live in their traditional shop-houses for contemporary life. And we simulated renewal to work out the minimal preservation space by “volume control”. Results of this study showed that the house's length would affect the minimal preservation space, the shorter house is “the historical arcade”, and the longer house is “the historical arcade and the first atrium”.

<p>The Pantry House Pantry or Mill of the Tithes is a baroque style building constructed at the end of the 18th century for the cash collection of the decimal rent, a tax repealed with the Madoz's Disentailment Law in 1855. The Pantry House of Espera is one of the most representative houses of the thirteen remaining in the province of Cadiz, and the only one that was also used as oil-mill (olive press). Organized around a central courtyard, is one of the few Andalucía houses that offers a full structure. The framework, which consist on a rectangular floor and double height, still preserves the old barns, the warehouse, the oil storages, the offices, and the former machinery in a relative good condition. Sille is located 8 km northwest of Konya city center in the Central Anatolia region. It is one of the most important and historically rooted residential units in Anatolia. Although it is located in close proximity to Konya, Sille draws attention as a unique site with its geographical structure, cultural life, beliefs and tradition. In this study, firstly, Sille’s historical significance, cultural and social characteristics are addressed with a particular focus on its distinct structure pertaining to its culture, belief, tradition and geography. Then, a typology study is carried out by explaining the city settlement constituting Sille’s historical fabric, façade characteristics and elements of Sille traditional houses. In this context, 16 traditional house façades are chosen in line with the infrastructures formed through the literature review on the subject. These house façades are examined and analyzed through the help of visual data. In the light of the data obtained from the results of this analysis, evaluations and suggestions on the preservation of Sille’s historical fabric are made.

As immersive technologies have become ubiquitous today, traditional museums are finding success augmenting existing exhibits to increase visitors’ satisfaction. However, due to the immutable nature of house museums, and their tendency to place visitors in direct contact with historical artifacts, museum managers are seeking original approaches to cultural preservation. Implementing mixed reality systems into historic house museums is one such approach. The goal of this study is to develop and test a conceptual matrix that guides how designers use the affordances of mixed reality systems to create experiences that align with the range of historical narratives found in house museums. Experiences that can contribute to improving visitors’ satisfaction, self-interpretation, and understanding of the homeowner’s life and the community within which they lived. Building on human-centered design methods, the researcher developed and tested a prototype of an augmented reality (AR) mobile application centered on the Pope House Museum in Raleigh, North Carolina. The outcome of the research suggests house museum visitors should have agency in deciding the lens through which they experience the variety of historical narratives present in the home.

Today there are hundreds of historic house museums open in communities across the country. Many of these museums recognize a noted historical character or event while others are noted for their architectural styling and detail. How should these museums care for their collections and interpretations to keep their standards high and to attract visitors? The case studies look at how several museums in east central Indiana operate and manage under different types of ownership, including state, county, and city governments, foundations, and historic groups. From interviews and visitations these museums were analysed as to how they coped with finances, day to day operations, traffic, collections and maintenance policies. The histories and future goals of each site were also researched and documented. Conclusions were drawn after these case studies were finished as to what were the best methods of management in order to achieve a high quality historic house museum.

The Hoskins House is a two-story, single pen log structure located in Tannenbaum Historic Park, Greensboro, North Carolina. The house is thought to have been built by Joseph Hoskins, who lived in Guilford County from 1778 until his death in 1799. Previous archaeological testing of soil around the house yielded over 1000 artifacts, and the ceramics of these gave a Mean Ceramic Date (MCD) of 1810 as a possible initial year of construction. Our objective was to date the outermost rings on as many logs as were accessible in the Hoskins House to determine the year or range of years when the house was likely built. We compared 37 ring-width measurement series from 28 white oak group logs with a composite reference chronology created from three oak reference chronologies from Virginia. We found that the logs were cut over a 3-year period from 1811 to 1813, lending credence to the initial MCD of 1810. Joseph Hoskins had already passed away in 1799 and the property was deeded to his two sons, Joseph and Ellis. Ellis Hoskins eventually was later deeded sole possession of the property. The two-story log house located at Tannenbaum Historic Park may be more correctly called the ‘‘Ellis Hoskins House’’ rather than the ‘‘Joseph Hoskins House.’’

Often teachers are faced with the challenge of teaching more content with less time and resources. The use of trade books within the content areas allows teachers to integrate multiple skills in one lesson. The Magic Tree House series has been popular with students and teachers on the elementary level. Using books such as these would be a good way for teachers to use their allotted time to teach all of the content that they are accountable for. This thesis will explore the historical accuracy and educational connections within the Magic Tree House series by Mary Pope Osborne. The purpose of my thesis research is to determine, through the methodology of content analysis, if the facts provided within the Magic Tree House series are accurate enough to use as supplements within the classroom as well as what Next Generation Sunshine State Standards might be linked to particular books.

In recent decades, agencies charged with managing historic structures and sites have found dendroarchaeological studies increasingly valuable, given the ability of such studies to verify (or refute) accepted dates of construction. The Ximénez-Fatio House has well-documented historical and cultural significance for the state of Florida, as it is one of St. Augustine’s oldest, best-preserved, and most studied historic properties. According to documentary sources, the two-story coquina-stone main house was reportedly built around 1797–1798, and included a one-story wing of warehouses, giving the house a distinctive ‘‘L’’ shape. Documentary evidence also suggests that a second story was added above the wing sometime between 1830 and 1842. However, after studying the building fabric itself, historical architects now believe the entire wing of the house was remodeled two decades later in the 1850s. Our goals were to: (1) determine the probable construction years for the original house and wing using tree-ring dating techniques, and (2) verify the probable construction year for the remodeling that occurred in the wing section of the house. A total of 74 core samples were extracted from longleaf pine (Pinus palustris P. Miller) timbers used to construct the house. Twenty-six were confidently crossdated both visually and statistically against each other to produce a 185-year floating tree-ring chronology. A statistically significant (p < 0.0001) correlation between our chronology and a longleaf pine chronology from Lake Louise, Georgia, anchors our chronology between 1673 and 1857. No cutting dates were obtained from the main house, but the lack of any tree rings that post-date 1798 supports the 1797 construction date. Furthermore, cutting dates obtained from beams in the first-floor wing revealed that the extensive remodeling of the wing likely occurred in the period 1856 to 1858 soon after the house had been purchased by Louisa Fatio in 1855.

Abstract This thesis examines the raison detre of the Australian Senate, the upper house of the Australian bicameral parliament, established in 1901. It explores the literature that might have influenced its establishment and structure, and the attitudes, ideals, experience and expectations of the men (and they were all men) who initiated its existence and designed its structure during the Federation Conventions of the 1890s. It goes on to study whether similar western and British influenced institutions were seen as models by the designers of the Senate, followed by an examination of its architecture, dcor, and procedures, to determine the major influences at work on these aspects of the institution. The study was undertaken in view of the paucity of studies of the history and role of the Senate in relation to its powerful influence on the Government of Australia. Its structure can allow a minority of Senators to subvert or obstruct key measures passed by the lower house and is a serious issue for Governments in considering legislation. Answers are sought to the questions of how and why it was conceived and created and what role it was expected to play. The study does not extend beyond 1901 when the Senate was established except to examine the Provisional Parliament House, opened in 1927, which realised the vision of the Convention delegates who determined that the Senate was the house we had to have. The research approach began with an exhaustive study of the Records of the Federal Conventions of the 1890s, where the Constitution of Australia was drawn up, along with contemporary writings and modern comment on such institutions. A study of the men who designed the Senate was carried out, augmented with field visits to the Australian State Parliaments. Research was also conducted into upper houses identified by the delegates to the Australian Federal Conventions, to consider their influence on the design of the Senate. The conclusion is that the Senate was deliberately structured to emulate the then existing British system as far as possible; it was to be an august house of review and a bastion against democracy, or at least a check on hasty legislation. The delegates showed no desire to extinguish ties with Great Britain and their vision of an upper house was modelled directly on the House of Lords. The vast majority of delegates had cut their teeth in colonial upper houses, which were themselves closely modelled on the Lords. To not establish a Senate would have been to turn their backs on themselves. The Senate then, is not a hybrid of Washington and Westminster: the influence of the United States was limited to the composition of the Senate and its name and mediated through the filter of its British heritage. The example of other legislatures was unimportant except where it solved problems previously experienced in the Colonial Councils and which might have otherwise occurred in the Senate. The Senate was the upper house we had to have; it was a decision that was taken before the delegates even met.

Thesis (Ph.D.)--Boston University
Historic houses function as the stages for, and central figures in, processes of place-making and heritage construction. I offer the case site of the Fairbanks House (completed in 1641) in Dedham, Massachusetts as the subject of my investigation into these issues. Touted as the "oldest timber frame house in North America," the Fairbanks House is widely regarded as a significant example of early colonial architecture in the United States; it has operated as a house museum since it was purchased by the Fairbanks Family in America, Inc. stewardship group in 1904. This study expands beyond antiquity to include all eight generations of Fairbanks families who lived on the property. I argue that longevity, and a durational perspective that links the past with the present, is equally vital to peoples' understanding and appreciation. I trace the biography of the Fairbanks House from its creation in the early 17th century to its current use as a heritage site. This perspective emphasizes the continued saliency of accumulated individual decisions and actions, reified by both material culture and immaterial processes such as tradition and memory. I use archaeological, architectural, documentary, and oral sources to reconstruct the landscape of the Fairbanks farm and I demonstrate how residents made day-to-day choices, such as land purchases or neighborly socializing, to improve their socio-economic standing and establish a future for their children. In doing so for eight generations, they established a legacy that was celebrated beginning in the 19th century, when Fairbanks women living in the house promoted their family's history through storytelling and published media. These processes of heritage construction remain continuous and personal, as shown by the results of an ethnographic study that I designed, which reveals that Fairbanks House museum visitors define historicity not through specific facts about the Fairbanks family but through their own narratives based on their engagement with the site's material culture. In addition to providing an important example of how generations of modestly-successful New England farmers adapted their surroundings to fit their values and goals, this study positions local house museums as dynamic spaces for creative, personal engagements with the past.

The Swaggerty Blockhouse has historical and cultural significance for Tennessee because it is believed to be the only remaining 18th Century blockhouse in the state. We incorporated analyses of artifacts obtained from archaeological excavations coupled with tree-ring dating techniques to determine the possible year of construction of the structure. A nearby reference tree-ring chronology from Norris Dam anchored the Swaggerty Blockhouse tree-ring chronology from 1674 to 1859. The assemblages of artifacts (nails, ceramics, and window glass) recovered from the site corroborated the construction date and provided a clear understanding of the structure’s use as a barn for storage and hog processing. Based on our analyses, the historic Swaggerty ‘‘Blockhouse,’’ originally believed to have been built by James Swaggerty in 1787, is instead a small cantilever barn built by Jacob Stephens in 1860 and used for hog farming.

Tabriz and especially the Sorkhab quarter, one of the historical quarters in Tabriz, Iran contains many valuable Qajarid houses. The current research is about studying the architectural characteristics of Qajarid houses in Tabriz to present conservation and revitalization plans for better adaptive reuse of these valued cultural heritage buildings. For this purpose, the house of Mirza Mehdi Farrashbashi who was one of the sons-in-law of Mozaffar ad-Din Shah Qajar has been chosen as a sample to be studied. Although it is important to conserve this house because of its architectural values and its beautiful ornaments, its adaptive reuse can also be useful for the preservation of the cultural heritage of East Azarbaijan, Tabriz in Iran. After studying the architectural values of this beautiful Qajarid house and its ornaments, the process of conservation and revitalization of it has been comprehensively explained throughout the current research for its adaptive reuse.

The article is devoted to the possibilities of virtual reconstruction of historical objects on the example of the house of I. Kant in Konigsberg. Using the method of 3D modeling, based on written sources, engravings, paintings, rare photo sources, memories, it was possible to recreate a realistic model of the house of I. Kant, its exterior and interior. Our work as part of the large project “Virtual Kant” allowed us to reconstruct one of the most significant objects in the life of I. Kant
