High-power lasers play an important role in modern science, industry, and medicine. A significant milestone was reached on 5 December 2022, when Inertial Confinement Nuclear Fusion (ICF) achieved scientific breakeven, releasing more energy than the input laser energy. Additionally, Extreme Ultraviolet Lithography (EUVL) has enabled the development of microchips with 3 nm process nodes, marking a leap in semiconductor technology. These examples, together with the recent achievement of 10 PW (1015 W) laser output, herald remarkable advancements in technology and science. Laser systems are broadly classified based on their operating regimes into two main categories: Continuous Wave (CW) operation, where the laser is continuously pumped and emits a steady beam of light, and the pulsed regime, in which the laser produces single or multiple pulses at various repetition rates. This review will primarily focus on pulsed laser systems, exploring their various types and recent technological advancements.

Currently, pulsed adders are used as pulsed voltage sources maturely. However, their use as pulsed current sources is significantly limited due to circuit impedance and the characteristics of power devices. This paper presents a simple yet effective design for a pulsed current source, incorporating a solid-state Marx pulsed adder as the primary power source and an inductor for energy storage. In the pulsed current source, a Marx pulsed adder produces high voltage to charge the inductor. Then, the stored inductance energy is converted to generate current pulses on the load; the amplitude of the pulsed current is unaffected by the load impedance within a certain range. The pulsed current source can be designed as a standard module, and several modules can form a cascade system for producing current pulses with higher voltage. Finally, a pulsed current source was developed, which can produce adjustable current pulses with high voltage. The design principles, control methods and the effects of the distribution parameters are described. The feasibility of the cascade pulsed power system was validated in experiments. Nine modules were connected to generate pulses of current 10 A on a 15 kΩ resistor.

The master oscillator power amplifier (MOPA) pulsed laser, one of the popular topologies for high-power fiber laser systems, is widely applied in industrial machining laser systems. In MOPA, the low-power pulsed laser, stimulated from a seed laser diode, is amplified by the high- power optical energy from pump laser diodes via the gain fiber. Generally, the high-power pump laser diodes are driven by lossy linear current drivers. The switched mode current drivers boost the driver efficiency but suffer from pulse energy consistency due to the current switching ripple. In this paper, a laser driver system that varies the switching frequency of current source to synchronize with pulsed laser repetition rate is analyzed and implemented. Experimental results are demonstrated using a 20 W pulsed fiber laser system.

Abstract The application of pulsed laser systems with pulse durations in the pico- and femtosecond regime for material processing is commonly associated with a cold ablation. Due to the minimized interaction-time between the ultrashort laser pulses and the material, this statement is almost valid as long as no heat accumulation effect appears. With the increasing demand of high productivity processes, the average power of ultrashort pulsed laser systems increases above 100 W, which leads, however, to increased thermal effects during laser processing. This is especially important for laser processing of technical ceramics like alumina. Large temperatures gradients, which locally occur during laser processing using high average power could lead to thermal modifications and cracks in the material. In this study, we present a process-optimization method for high power laser ablation of alumina based on thermal imaging. The use of a 2D IR camera enables the estimation of the temperature distribution during the laser processing. We investigate the influence of laser power up to 80 W, pulse duration between 900 fs and 10 ps and processing duration on the resulting material temperature. Beside the material temperature we evaluate the material removal rate and the resulting surface quality.

To meet the application requirements of pulsed power technology in wastewater treatment and other aspects (for example, a scenario that requires a high-voltage pulse source that can output a pulse with a rising edge in the nanosecond range and a device that can stabilize the pulse under high-frequency conditions), this paper designed an inductively isolated bipolar high-voltage pulse source. It consists of three parts: the primary charging power supply, the isolated driver circuit, and the pulse-forming circuit. By using inductance instead of traditional resistance isolation, using the inductance for charging and isolation, the inductance can increase the charging voltage of the capacitor, so the circuit can achieve a higher voltage output. The dual-Marx generator parallel connection design of the pulsed power supply topology, using a primary charging power supply for positive and negative polarity charging, can simultaneously output the reverse polarity and size of high-voltage pulses to achieve a bipolar output, so the load has an effect on the pulse. The equipment was selected on the basis of the design of the isolated driver circuit, primary charging power supply circuit, and pulse-forming circuit for the corresponding simulation, and in the experiment to build a principle model, the tests showed that the pulse source output pulse amplitude range was 0~10 kV (the positive pulse voltage was 5 kV, and the negative pulse voltage was −5 kV), the pulse rising edge was approximately 200 ns, the pulse width was 1 μs, and the frequency range was 0~1 kHz for the pulse source frequency. The power supply was designed to be used in applications such as wastewater treatment.

In this paper, we present an analysis and a validation of a simulation program with integrated circuit emphasis (SPICE) model for a pulse forming circuit of a high frequency electroporation system, which can deliver square-wave sub-microsecond (100–900 ns) electric field pulses. The developed SPICE model is suggested for use in evaluation of transient processes that occur due to high frequency operations in prototype systems. A controlled crowbar circuit was implemented to support a variety of biological loads and to ensure a constant electric pulse rise and fall time during electroporation to be independent of the applied buffer bioimpedance. The SPICE model was validated via a comparison of the simulation and experimental results obtained from the already existing prototype system. The SPICE model results were in good agreement with the experimental results, and the model complexity was found to be sufficient for analysis of transient processes. As result, the proposed SPICE model can be useful for evaluation and compensation of transient processes in sub-microsecond pulsed power set-ups during the development of new prototypes.

The required synchronization in time the pump pulse femtosecond amplifier formation and quasi-stationary region of generated pulses in the output radiation of a femtosecond Ti:sapphire is obtained. On this basis a compact, pulse pumped monoblock laser system has been developed that can generate femtosecond pulses with a duration of 50–150 fs with an energy up to 1 mJ and a high enough pulse repetition rate (up to 1 kHz which is determined by the type of laser head and pump unit used). In the developed laser system a compact scheme of a stretcher-compressor with a single common diffraction grating is used.Laser systems of this type characterized by a relatively low cost due to the use of a single power supply unit for simultaneous pumping of the amplifier and oscillator, as well as lower requirements for the quality of optical elements and usage conditions due to the pulse mode of operation, are quite practical and can be used both in scientific research in the field of ultra-high-speed kinetic spectroscopy and nonlinear optics, as well as in numerous technical applications, particular in the precision processing of materials, as optical simulators of the action of heavy charged particles in testing the radiation resistance of integrated circuits and electronic modules.

Most modern pulsed laser systems require versatile laser diode drivers. A state-of-the-art pulsed laser driver should provide precise peak power regulation, high repetition rate, and pulse duration control. A new, charge line dual-FET transistor circuit structure was developed to provide all these features. The pulsed modulation current is adjustable up to Imax = 1.2 A, with the laser diode forward voltage acceptable up to UF max = 20 V. The maximum repetition rate is limited by a charge line circuit to frep max = 20 MHz. Compared to the conventional single transistor drivers, the solution proposed in this paper allows a precise, high resolution width regulation to be obtained, whereas a low pulse jitter is ensured. In the solution, two separate, out-of-phase signals are used to trigger the individual Field Effect Transistors (FET). The resultant pulsed modulation current full-width-at-half-maxima (FWHM) is regulated from ~200 ps up to 2 ns. All control and timing signals are generated with a popular Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) digital circuitry. The use of standard FPGA devices ensures the low cost and high reliability of the circuit, which are not available in laser drivers consisting of sophisticated analogue adjustable delay circuits.

The interaction of ultrashort pulsed laser radiation with intensities of 1013 W cm−2 and above with materials often results in an unexpected high X-ray photon flux. It has been shown so far, on the one hand, that X-ray photon emissions increase proportionally with higher laser power and the accumulated X-ray dose rates can cause serious health risks for the laser operators. On the other hand, there is clear evidence that little variations of the operational conditions can considerably affect the spectral X-ray photon flux and X-ray emissions dose. In order to enhance the knowledge in this field, four ultrashort pulse laser systems for providing different complementary beam characteristics were employed in this study on laser-induced X-ray emissions, including peak intensities between 8 × 1012 W∙cm−2 < I0 < 5.2 × 1016 W∙cm−2, up to 72.2 W average laser power as well as burst/bi-burst processing mode. By the example of AISI 304 stainless steel, it was verified that X-ray emission dose rates as high as H˙′ (0.07) > 45 mSv h−1 can be produced when low-intensity ultrashort pulses irradiate at a small 1 µm intra-line pulse distance during laser beam scanning and megahertz pulse repetition frequencies. For burst and bi-burst pulses, the second intra-burst pulse was found to significantly enhance the X-ray emission potentially induced by laser pulse and plasma interaction.

The thermal management and channel temperature evaluation of GaN power amplifiers are indispensable issues in engineering field. The transient thermal characteristics of pulse operated AlGaN/GaN high electron mobility transistors (HEMT) used in high power amplifiers are systematically investigated by using three-dimensional simulation with the finite element method. To improve the calculation accuracy, the nonlinear thermal conductivities and near-junction region of GaN chip are considered and treated appropriately in our numerical analysis. The periodic transient pulses temperature and temperature distribution are analyzed to estimate thermal response when GaN amplifiers are operating in pulsed mode with kilowatt-level power, and the relationships between channel temperatures and pulse width, gate structures, and power density of GaN device are analyzed. Results indicate that the maximal channel temperature and thermal impedance of device are considerably influenced by pulse width and power density effects, but the changes of gate fingers and gate width have no effect on channel temperature when the total gate width and active area are kept constant. Finally, the transient thermal response of GaN amplifier is measured using IR thermal photogrammetry, and the correctness and validation of the simulation model is verified. The study of transient simulation is demonstrated necessary for optimal designs of pulse-operated AlGaN/GaN HEMTs.

A novel proposal of configuration bearing a positive angle of 45o with socket-type filed shaper is being discussed in this paper in a manner to improve surface flashover properties and also to decrease the distortion seen in the pulse shape. This type of transmission line provides high capability of hold off voltage. AbstractThe digital control of the latest nanosecond pulsed wave (PW) fibre lasers allows very high flexibility in controlling the application of the total energy to a workpiece, which brings several advantages to the joining process. By choosing different pulse shapes in different spatial profiles, it is possible to apply low energy per pulse with high precision and accuracy resulting in lower heat input. Since the energy of each pulse is insufficient to generate melting, these lasers operate at very high pulse repetition frequencies near continuous wave (CW) regime. Nevertheless, the peak powers of PW lasers are much higher than CW. In this research, the effect of peak power, pulse energy, pulse width, pulse repetition frequency and duty cycle has been studied. The experimental work was conducted in bead on plate of austenitic stainless steel to investigate the effect of laser on the weld geometry, i.e. depth of penetration and width. An empirical model, previously established for CW mode, which enables the achievement of a particular penetration depth independent of the beam diameter, was redesigned and tested for PW mode. The “pulse power factor model” allows the laser user to select a weld profile that meets certain quality and productivity requirements independent of the laser system. It was shown that identical depth of penetration but different weld metal profile can be obtained for a specific beam diameter for a range of different system parameters by keeping a constant trade-off between pulse power factor and interaction time.

The flip-flops are considered as major contributors to the power dissipation of the clocking system, which is made up of the clock provision network and storage elements (latches, flip-flops). The power- and delay-efficient new implicit-pulsed dual-edge triggering flip-flop circuit (IP-DETFF) is proposed with two latching stages by employing an implicit-pulse triggering, dual-edge clocking and reducing the number of clocked loads. This leads to the reduction of power consumption due to clock allocation tree (pclk-tree) and reduces the delay time. The dual-edge clocking technique is incorporated into this proposed design without an increment of the number of transistors and minimizes the operating frequency as half. This methodology is also employed in this proposed design to construct new latching part of the flip-flop circuit. The performance of proposed flip-flop is analyzed by simulating the circuit at 0.12[Formula: see text][Formula: see text]m CMOS (complementary metal oxide semiconductor) process technology. Bdot probes and Rogowski coils are used in the measurement of transient magnetic fields and currents, respectively. They both share the mechanism of creating an induced electromotive force response via Faraday’s law, which scales linearly with the pulsed magnetic field. High power capacitor direct current (DC) discharge systems release a single pulse of current that is both very high and very fast (≲1 ms). To capture these transient data and characterize these systems, high current tolerant and fast response time sensors are required. While these measuring devices have been well studied and utilized for almost 100 years, a comprehensive and detailed description of the custom design, calibration, and sensor fusion application of these tools for use in various pulsed DC capacitor value discharges is largely missing in the literature. Using robust analytical calculations, finite element analyses, and empirical methods, we have developed a sensor fusion protocol for current and magnetic field probes (with relative errors of ±13% and ±15%, respectively) for use in any geometry of high speed pulsed DC current calibrated capacitor discharge systems. This paper comprehensively outlines the design and sensor fusion methodologies that allow for the deployment of in-house built Bdot probes and Rogowski coils to a wide range of pulsed DC systems and demonstrates their use in a characteristic plasma environment.

Using solar power supply systems for various applications, such as food processing, enables energy expense saving. A promising opportunity in the food industry is solar-powered Pulsed Electric Field (PEF) used in the treatment of fruits and their by-products. For this application, a converter is proposed in this paper with a combination of a passive switched inductor cell and a switched capacitor cell. Furthermore, the derived topology possesses an extendable feature. This topology generates high voltage repetitive pulses with a single semiconductor switch and a reduced component count. Dynamic study of the converter is also performed with the derivation of the transfer function. Cost effective, reliable, and simple circuitry are the critical features of this topology. The circuit topology can generate high voltage pulses by increasing the number of switched inductors and switched capacitor cells. A correlation study on the impact of the switched inductor/capacitor cell is also performed and analyzed, which is not usually performed. This article presents a wideband bias circuit with low parasitic inductance for high-power pulsed amplifiers. The proposed bias circuit works similarly to the traditional bias circuit in that it can ensure the transmission of microwaves from the power amplifier to the load while preventing the transmission of microwaves from the power amplifier to the power supply. By making the bias line shorter and the transmission line wider than the traditional bias circuit, the proposed bias circuit reduces its parasitic inductance. The reduction of parasitic parameters is critical for reducing the drain voltage overshoot of the high-power pulse power amplifier and ensuring its safety. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed bias circuit has a lower parasitic inductance and a wider bandwidth. To validate the theory and simulation results, the traditional and the proposed bias circuits are fabricated using microstrip circuits. Both the simulation and experimental results indicate that the proposed bias circuit has a one-third lower parasitic inductance than the traditional bias circuit. Furthermore, the proposed bias circuit has a wider bandwidth.

Damage to optical materials under intense photon irradiation has always been a major problem in the design and operation of high-energy and high-average-power lasers. In short-wavelength lasers, operating at visible and ultraviolet wavelengths, the problem appears to be especially acute; presently attainable damage thresholds seriously compromise the engineering design of laser windows and mirrors, pulsed power trains and oscillator-amplifier systems architecture. Given the present interest in ultraviolet excimer lasers and in short-pulse, high-power free-electron lasers operating at visible and shorter wavelengths, the “optical damage problem” poses a scientific and technological challenge of significantdimensions. The solution of this problem even has significant implications outside the realm of lasers, for example, in large space-borne systems (such as the Hubble Telescope) exposed to intense ultraviolet radiation. The dimensions of the problem are illustrated by the Large-Aperture krypton-fluoride laser amplifier Module (LAM) shown schematically in Figure 1. This device, now operating at the Los Alamos National Laboratory, is typical of current and planned large excimer lasers for fusion applications. The LAM has an active volume of some 2 m3, and optical surfaces (resonator mirror and windows) exceeding 1 m2 in size; the fabrication of these optical elements was the most expensive and time-consuming single item in the construction of the laser. During laser operation, a population inversion in an Ar-Kr-F2 mix ture is created through electron-beam excitation of the laser gas by two 400 kA beams of 650 keV electrons from a cold cathode discharge. The electron trajectories in the gas are constrained by a 4 kG magnetic field transverse to the optical axis produced by a pair of large Helmholtzcoils.

Nanosecond, high-electrical field pulse power technology is used for delivering variable, controllable, intracellular electrical perturbations in several biological systems. Here, we investigated the effect of nanosecond (ns) electric pulse (nsEP) as a therapeutic tool for cancer. In in-vitro study, the breast cancer cells (MCF-7) were exposed with electric field of ~18kV/cm intensity, ~25ns duration, at 1.5Hz in a 2mm electroporation cuvette. Post exposure, observation shows a significant reduction in cell viability. It was evident that after treatment the viability of MCF-7 cancer cells at 630 pulses are remains ~38% only. The optical microscopic analysis of MCF-7 cells shows cell morphology changes after electrical pulse exposure. Moreover, we have also investigated a comparative study of the effect nano-second electrical pulses on MCF-7 cells and Chinese Hamster Ovary (CHO) cell line.
