The larger context of this conference was the annual festival of early music in Thuringia known as Güldener Herbst (Golden Autumn). The series of concerts, church services, guided tours and similar events in late September and early October took note of the three hundredth anniversaries of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach's birth on 8 March 1714 and Philipp Heinrich Erlebach's death a few weeks later, on 17 April. Since Bach was born in Weimar (central Germany) but worked primarily in the northern cities of Berlin and Hamburg, and Erlebach, conversely, hailed from a small town in the far northwest but spent his career in Rudolstadt (about twenty miles south of Weimar), the 2014 festival focused on cultural interrelationships between the two regions, summed up in the subtitle ‘Norddeutsche Impulse’ (north German impulses).

The Middle Pleistocene site Bilzingsleben II is well-known for its wealth of vertebrate and archaeological remains. Of particular importance is the record of Homo erectus bilzingslebenensis. Most palaeontologists consider the find horizon as a primary vertebrate deposit formed during human occupation, while some archaeologists attribute its formation to turbulent gravitational mass flows, inundation or a combination of both. Here we present mortality profiles of the beavers Castor and Trogontherium to provide further arguments to this controversial discussion. The mortality profiles of Castor from Bilzingsleben II, Weimar-Ehringsdorf and Weimar-Taubach are largely identical indicating similar taphonomic filters that were effective in the formation of the find layers. Individuals, which were tentatively classified as suspected ±2–2½ year old beavers dominate by far in all three sites. The structure of these mortality profiles shows similarities to Stiner’s (1990) “prime dominated mortality pattern”, which is indicative of human hunting. This consideration is supported by the difference of the mortality profile of Trogontherium from Bilzingsleben II (dominance of older individuals) in relation to the profiles of non-hominin generated assemblages of Tegelen and Mosbach 2 (dominance of younger individuals). Thus, our data support the interpretation of the Palaeolithic find horizon of Bilzingsleben II as a primary vertebrate deposit, but not the gravitational mass flow and inundation hypotheses.

The Constitutions of the states and provinces that were part of the Soviet occupation zone of Germany can be divided into two groups. The Constitutions of Saxony-Anhalt, Mecklenburg and Saxony included a section on basic rights, and also enshrined the right to work. In contrast, the Constitutions of Thuringia and Brandenburg contained neither a section on basic rights nor the right to work. While considering the period 1945-1949 attention should also be paid to the acts of both the Soviet Military Administration in Germany and the German authorities, which, among other things, were aimed at overcoming unemployment, secured the right to form trade unions, regulated the content of the collective agreement, and established measures to improve occupational safety. In the Constitution of the German Democratic Republic of 1949 the right to work was enshrined in Article 15. At the same time, the text of this article shows clear similarities with the norms of the Weimar Constitution, as well as the Constitutions of Saxony-Anhalt, Mecklenburg and Saxony. In the GDR Constitution of 1968, the right to work is enshrined in Article 24. The basic right to work was developed by the provisions of such acts as the Labor Law of 1950, the Labor Code of 1961 and the Labor Code of the GDR of 1977. The GDR Constitution of 1968 and the GDR Labor Code of 1977 establish a legal duty to work. At the same time, in earlier normative legal acts, in particular in the Labor Code of 1961, this duty was characterized by the legislator as moral.

With the reunification of Germany, a Jenaplan School was founded in 1991 in the city of Jena,Thuringia. Since then one place of the city carried Petersen's name. The University School at Jena, refounded by Petersen as Life Community School in 1924 (the traditional purpose as a mere teacher training school goes back to the year 1844) and received international attention during the Weimar Republic. Petersen's attempt to gain recognition in the Hitler state (1933-1945) with his reform pedagogy failed, but the University School was allowed to continue to exist. In 1950 it was closed by the socialist GDR state (East Germany). Ten years ago, a bitter dispute raged in Jena over Petersen because previously unknown racist texts written by him had been discovered. The dispute ended when Petersenplatz was renamed "Jenaplan". A book by Hein Retter, which appeared ten years ago, was highly controversial: it described children of Jewish and socialist origin as well as disabled children - from families who were threatened by Nazi ideology but who saw their children safe with Petersen. Looking back ten years, the author of the controversial book describes the Jena Petersen dispute and what can be learned from it.

Abstract Background Telemedicine applications are becoming more accepted and offer great potential to support physicians and patients. However, there is an increasing need for research, especially in personal predictors that determine the interest and use of telemedicine and e-health applications. This study aims to identify if attachment and patient activation are potential predictors of the interest in and the use of e-health applications in primary care patients. Methods We used data from the cross-sectional observational Weimar TelMed study on 192 patients treated by general practitioners from a practice of family medicine in Thuringia, the middle of Germany. The adult attachment was measured using the ECR-RD12 and patient activation with the PAM-13D. Multiple regression analysis by the General Linear Model was used to evaluate the association between attachment, patient activation, and interest in and use of e-health applications. Results Patient activation was associated with a higher interest in e-health care. The attachment dimension avoidance was a potential predictor of interest in e-health and e-health-care use. Conclusion Adult attachment is an essential predictor of different ways of healthcare use. While avoidant patients evade contact with general practitioners, self-determined access via e-health seems to improve the health care of these patients. A personalized view might be a basis for the evaluation of individual approaches in Primary Care.

AbstractThe Red Kite has come to the forefront of general consciousness in recent decades. A major contributing factor has been repeated collisions of these raptors with wind turbines and the important role they play in the approval process for new turbines. Efforts to improve their protection sometime encounter challenges due to limited knowledge about some life history aspects, e.g., their flight altitude and flight activity. We investigated these parameters from 2012 to 2018 in an approximately 1000-km2 study area in the vicinity of Weimar (Federal State of Thuringia, Federal Republic of Germany) in 29 breeding birds (19 males and 10 females) equipped with GPS loggers. In addition to more than 11 million GPS data records, accelerometer data from the loggers were evaluated. The start of morning activities correlated with sunrise. Most frequently, Red Kites initiated their first hunting flights immediately at sunrise; males started hunting at 9 min and females started hunting at 12 min after sunrise (medians). The Red Kites mostly foraged and hunted their prey during flight. The proportion of time spent flying during their activity phase was highest during midday hours, reaching 30–80% in males depending on the phase of the breeding season. For males, the time spent flying was approximately two and a half times that for females. The birds sporadically reached flight altitudes of up to 1600 m above ground in the breeding area, while they maintained lower altitudes between 5 and 60 m more frequently and predominantly while foraging (56% of location fixes). Higher altitudes were occupied much less frequently than lower altitudes and were often used to travel relatively long distances in an energy-saving manner. The end of activity was well before sunset, at 87 min prior to sunset for males and 154 min prior to sunset (medians) for females.

The addition to the College of Architecture and Design Weimar, the former Bauhaus Weimar, consolidates the two existing buildings designed by Henry van de Velde into a new complex with 40,000 sf of existing building and 100, 000 sf of new structure. The new facility contains a 300 seat auditorium, library, lecture and seminar rooms, administrative offices, cafeteria, photo lab and gallery as well as extended studios and offices.Contrary to the brief of the competition which only requires an addition for the Department of Architecture, the position taken here, proposes an interweaving of the Art and Architecture Departments. The Bauhaus interweaves these two schools in the same way as the definition of art and architecture have come to include each other. The additional structure integrates therefore the idea that the building is used both by architecture and art students.Since the project is for a College of Architecture and Art, I believe the new College of Art and Architecture must confront the challenges of current thinking; the search for a new integration of concept and form it must move over the deconstructive approach by achieving a complexity not as a contradiction but as an acceptance of the duality of existence. This interelationship is represented in the famous play "Faust". Written by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe who spent almost 60 years (and most of them in Weimar) working on this piece, the play raises diverse and contradictory questions: 1. of knowledge, 2. of identity and 3. of morality in terms that reflect the 'doubleness' of all beings in nature. Faust becomes important when we recognize the memory of such themes in Weimar. The pieces, and hence, the structure of the play are not composed as a narrative but as an dialogue of different stories. The development of the design parallels the play in which the play becomes the concept and the concept becomes the play; several events - each centered on one major event- provide the scenes for the building.

AbstractBad Berka is a small spa town in Germany, in the state of Thuringia, near the historical cultural city of Weimar with a population of roughly 8000. Natural beauty and spa attracted some prominent personalities of Germany including Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Any town associated with Goethe has a special place in history.Bad Berka also happened to be the place in Germany where Prof. Dr. Richard Paul Baum created the “First Theranostics Empire” on the World Map through the living principle of his life “Rerum cognoscere causas and Carpe diem!”. This chapter tries to elucidate and elaborate how Dr. Baum, through his “philomathy” and firm, to some extent unparalleled, contagious belief in “Aegroti Salus Suprema Lex” successfully conceptualized and pioneered some of the major pathbreaking discoveries in the field of Theranostics. As his “first” research fellow in “Theranostics”, I have had the luxury and honor of closely following Dr. Baum’s efforts in breaking the resistance of acceptance of radiopharmaceuticals for treatment and management of cancer patients. This chapter, written as a commentary, is a tribute to his commitment, motivation, and passion to the field of “Theranostics”.

Abstract When the Nazis came to power in 1933, a widespread debate began in judicial circles on which method of execution would be most appropriate in view of the new principles of penal policy being enacted in the Third Reich. At this time traditional methods of execution were still widespread in Germany. The handheld axe was still used in most of Germany, including Prussia, while the guillotine was employed in Bavaria, Württemberg, Baden, Saxony, Thuringia, Bremen, Oldenburg, and Hesse. The axe was frequently condemned abroad as barbaric, and was felt by some influential figures to be something of a propaganda gift to foreign enemies of the Third Reich, even though it had been widely used under the Weimar Republic.
