Abstract Anna Frajlich was exiled from her homeland in 1969 and arrived in the United States a year later. This article traces through her poetry and prose the arc of Frajlich's residence in New York, from wary foreigner, residing in windswept Brooklyn, up to her present status as retired Columbia University faculty member who has made her home on Manhattan's Upper East Side. In other words, from her earliest poem about Brooklyn in 1973 to poems in which she describes events from her apartment on the Upper East Side, published in early 2021. In the essay the author draws on his first-hand experience as participant in her 2017 reading at the Cornelia Street Café; translator of Frajlich's volume of short fiction, Laboratorium [The laboratory, 2018], and editor of Frajlich's Ghost of Shakespeare: Collected Essays (2020). While the poetry is the main object of study, the article looks at the short story “Laboratorium,” filling in the realia about the New York Blood Center behind the fiction, including the biography of the head researcher, Dr. Wolf Szmuness, an internationally recognized expert who came to the United States from Poland, after spending time in Stalin's Gulag. And lastly, the piece examines two poems published in 2021: “Morza i rzeki” [Seas and rivers], which brilliantly sums up Frajlich's interest in bodies of water, for example, “Brooklyn Canzone” (1973), and the poem “Z marginesu pandemii” [From the margins of the pandemic], where the poet sees hope for the end of the pandemic and the unnatural isolation experienced by so many in the previous year and a half.

AbstractThe metaphorical phrases Daughter Zion and Daughter Jerusalem are to be understood as appositional genitives referring to the city of Jerusalem in spite of a recent proposal to the contrary. They are part of a larger literary and cultural deposit of personifying the city and should be interpreted in that light. The kinship connotations of the city as "daughter" are then explored and located in the larger root metaphor of YHWH's household, along with certain of the city's other roles (e.g. spouse, widow and mother).

Nicknaming his city “Dear Old Lady Thrift,”Milwaukee Journalwriter Richard Davis chastised city leaders for failing to build a “great city.” His unflattering portrait pictured post–World War II Milwaukee as a “plump and smiling city . … [sitting] in complacent shabbiness on the west shore of Lake Michigan like a wealthy old lady in black alpaca taking her ease on the beach.” He continued, “All her slips are showing, but she doesn’t mind a bit” (Davis 1947: 189, 191). Reprinted in theMilwaukee Journaltwo weeks before voters went to the polls to decide if the city would reverse its debt-free policy to finance postwar development, Davis’s depiction warned that Milwaukee was a chaotic andin efficient metropolis in danger of falling behind(“Not So Fair Is America’s Fair City”Milwaukee Journal[hereafterMJ], 16 March 1947). Her thriftiness bordered on stinginess, her complacency slipped into indolence, and her neglected femininity bespoke disorder. City leaders’ frugality, rooted in a tradition of cautious municipal fiscal policies, big city problems mismatched with small town attitudes, and public “indifference,” Davis contended, threatened the postwar city.

Full of morbid humour and painfully honest narrations, Laura Hird’s stories— mainly set in the city of Edinburgh— deal with relationships of power, family values and her narratives always offer her unique view on the city she was born in and its people. Through these stories, she presents her unparalleled perspective on the beauty of some of the city’s hidden locations which are not portrayed by others. As she mentions in Dear Laura, Hird considers herself to be a ‘constipated romantic’, and that is simply a great way to summarise her work, as her way of portraying life through writing is not always pleasant, yet ever phenomenal. While her first published work allowed her to be included amongst a group of male authors; her first story collection and her novel roared originality and offered a different city of Edinburgh, and her last collection put the cherry on top with yet more uncomfortably true stories about queer Scottishness as part of her urban observations.

There has been numerous documents about Sor Juana since Juan Camacho published his first volume in Madrid in 1689, and more so during 1995, her anniversary. There is no certainty about the date of her birth, it is placed between 1651 and 1653, she died in 1695. The magazines A BSIDE. REVISTA DE CULTURA MEXICANA during the period 1941-1973 published 25 articles, and CONTEMPORÂNEOS eight articles from 1929 to 1931; the BOLETIN DE LA BIBLIOTECA NACIONAL published five articles in 1951 and I960, but none of these deal with her library. The following authors have discussed her library: the writer, Ermilo Abreu Gómezf1934); Alfonso Méndez Plancarte (1944); the art historian and critic, Francisco de la Maza (1952); the poet Octavio Paz (1982); the ex-director of the Mexican National Library, Ignacio Osorio (1986). I think that the 4000 volumes of this library played an important part in her writings, and much more than companions: objects of her world. This library unfortunately, disintegrated by her at the end of her life, is an example of library collections and libraries of the New World, together with the first academic library built in Mexico City: "La Biblioteca del Colegio de Santa Cruz de Tlatelolco " (1536). To know about the titles of some of these books, whose existence can only be seen in two of the paintings of Sor Juana, one by the Mexican artist Juan de Miranda, active from 1697 to 1711, owned by the "Universidad Nacional Autônoma de México", and the other by the Mexican painter, Miguel Cabrera at the "Museo Nacional de Historia del Castillo de Chapultepec" in Mexico City, gives us an idea not only of her library, but of her world. The XVIIc in Mexico City is a baroque century with its four social entities: the Court, the Church, the City and the Convent in which Sor Juana lived. If we take into consideration her writings, there was a fifth entity, the Hispanic literary world. Sor Juana with her beauty, charm, intelligence and ability to deal with the most important personalities of her time was considered a string between the New and the Old Worlds because of her literary contributions as a woman, more so as an American woman of the XVIIc. She is pondered by Alatorref1995) as the spiritual gold similar to the gold extracted from the New World mines. In a metaphorical way her writings are the result of her intellect and of the contents extracted from the books which represented the world of knowledge contained in her library.

The thesis aims to investigate women’s everyday experiences of navigating the relationships between home and work in order to understand spatial and perceptual boundaries and opportunities that are inherent, constructed and implied within the city’s urban form. Boundaries refer to restrictions imposed on women by social structures through constructed space, and opportunities refer to ways in which the built environment either does or could improve women’s urban experience. These issues are explored through study of urban development and form, and evolving cultural and gender relations in the Cypriot city of Limassol, a coastal city of approximately three hundred thousand that grew substantially towards the end of the twentieth century. The research considers women’s entry into the workforce over the past fifty years as a pivotal moment of transition and seeks to unpack its significance for the relationship between women and the city today. Investigations delved into women’s understanding of the relative efficiency of urban space, women’s awareness of how gender relations are affected by the built environment and women’s willingness to embrace spatial and social alternatives. Thus, women’s experiences become a lens through which to read and understand the urban landscape, as well as an opportunity to consider how the production and consumption of space might further conditions for greater equality and inclusion. Interdisciplinary methods applied involve grounded theory analysis and mappings of qualitative data extracted from interviews, and visualizations of onsite observations. Ultimately, the research uncovers a complex relationship between women and various iterations of privacy within constructed space, and explores its implications in perpetuating women’s uneven urban experiences. Since fostering gender equality is a fundamental aspect of good urbanism, the research aims to contribute to the discourses of spatial democracy and social sustainability, in which the need for socio-political considerations to play more decisive roles in urban development processes is emphasized.

Much has been published in Chicano studies over the past thirty to forty years; lacking in the historiography are the roles that Chicanas have played, specifically concerning politics in Dallas, Texas. How were Chicanas able to advance El Movimiento (the Mexican American civil rights movement)? Anita Martínez was the first woman to serve on the Dallas City Council and the first Mexican American woman to be elected to the city council in any major U.S. city. She served on the council from 1969 to 1973 and remained active on various state and local boards until 1984. Although the political system of Dallas has systematically marginalized Mexican American political voices and eradicated Mexican American barrios, some Mexican Americans fought the status quo and actively sought out the improvement of Mexican barrios and an increase in Mexican American political representation, Anita N. Martínez was one of these advocates. Long before she was elected to office, she began her activism with efforts to improve her children’s access to education and efforts to improve the safety of her community. Martinez was a champion for the Chicano community, especially for the youth. Her work for and with young Chicanos has earned her the moniker, “Defender of Dreams.” She created a chicano recreation center in Dallas, as well as various poverty programs and neighborhood beautification projects. Although she has remained relatively unknown, during her tenure on the Dallas City Council, between the years 1969 and 1973, Anita Martínez made invaluable, lasting contributions to the Chicano community in Dallas.

This book is a monograph about Anna Świrszczyńska’s poetry. It may be described as one woman’s attempt to read another woman’s literary work by taking into account established canons as well as the tools of feminist literary analysis. Part One begins with a discussion of Świrszczyńska’s biography (Chapter One). It then moves on to an overview of critical (mainly male) reactions to Świrszczyńska’s work (Chapter Two), with special regard to Czesław Miłosz’s contribution to its interpretation and popularization (Chapter Three). In Part Two there are three principal discussions: 1) of Anna Świrszczyńska’s early work Wiersze i proza [Poems and Prose] (1936), in which the poet develops her specific female view of European art and culture as disintegrated into incongruent fragments. Her premonition of the apocalypse, which is soon to be fulfilled in the events of World War II, finds its expression in the poet’s desperate attempts to unite the fragments of a shattered culture into individualized versions of myths (Chapter Four); 2) of the collection Budowałam barykadę [Building the Barricade] (1974), in which what is most crucial to the poet (biographically and poetically) is expressed – the encounter with human suffering in an inhuman world. Following this, her poetic view of the mortal body exposed to suffering under an empty sky becomes a well established motif in her work (Chapter Five); 3) of the collection Jestem baba (1972), in which Świrszczyńska introduces into poetry, by making the non-poetical “baba” her lyric heroine, the “outlawed feminine” and, as a result, revolutionizes the language of poetry and poetic representation, which leads in turn to liberating herself from the hegemony of the totalizing male gaze. In this way her anti-world is created (Chapter Six). The “world” is understood here as a male term – one might say that Świrszczyńska creates a “woman’s anti-world” as a place where the woman herself has to regain the right to name things according to her own terms.

Paul Auster’s City of Glass contains a jumble of identities. In fact, the identities are more numerous than the characters, and consequently, characters have several different identities. Some of these identities are obvious constructs, but with others the degree of construction is less evident. Poststructuralist theory, however, puts forward the idea that these seemingly original identities are in fact constructs to the same level as all others. Thus, this essay argues that there are no original identities; identities are constructed by outer factors. This essay discusses three outer factors contributing to the construction of identities, factors commonly discussed in poststructuralist criticism, these three being language, cultural codes and chance.

Abstract When she was a blonde, doe-eyed teenager, Carol Doda’s future was not bright. A high-school dropout from Napa County, she landed in the Tenderloin in the early 1960s, where she quickly found a roommate and friend in a male hairstylist who shared his makeup tips with her. Doda fell in love with her roommate and became inconsolably jealous about his mysterious preference for male company. Her love unrequited, Doda took a job as a dancing cocktail waitress at the Condor go-go bar in North Beach and moved into the district. “Big” Davey Rosenberg, a corpulent, hard-nosed club promoter, saw great profit potential in Doda and encouraged her to perform her dance in one of designer Rudi Gernreich’s new “topless” bathing suits. On June 22, 1964, the twenty-year-old Doda metamorphosed from ingénue to internationally renowned sexual spectacle when she took to the stage at the Condor and revolutionized the local burlesque show circuit by baring her breasts in their entirety during her performance of the “swim” dance. She brazenly tossed aside the pasties that striptease dancers had worn for most of the century. Shortly thereafter—also at Rosenberg’s urging—Doda received one of the first silicone breast augmentations, increasing her modest bust size to a double D. Doda’s likeness, depicted on a forty-foot sign complete with red, illuminated nipples, towered over the intersection of Columbus Avenue and Broadway Street and became a landmark, drawing throngs of locals and tourists alike.

“Jan Gehl, an expert in humanisation of cities, is convinced that the enhancing of quality of our life in the cities is a derivative of the image of public spaces […] where people meet “in order to exchange ideas, to trade or simply to rest” (Jan Gehl, Life between buildings)’. These words hail from the Regulations of the International Biennale of Architecture 2015 whose motto was “Human dimension of urban spaces”. Its idea was to inspire the debate, both at the civic and self-governmental level, on Polish public spaces and their accessibility, through the presentation of architectural and urban designs. It was considered vital because of the colossal means from the EU cohesion funds which are being spent in Poland on urban revitalisations. Due to her involvement in the Biennale’s organisation (commissioner, juror, moderator), the authoress raises the issue of the mentioned and awarded Polish designs. All the entries (over 200) were competing in one of the three categories: of the realised designs, hypothetical ones and interventions-manifestos. They provide the perfect comparative material. As it was stated in the Protocol of the Jury, ‘In the competitions A i B , the Jury has mentioned and awarded completed projects in various scales, from small architectural scale through an urbanistic one to landscape, both mobile, temporary and permanent, yet always fulfilling the criterion of shaping urban spaces in human dimension’. The article, analysing the recent solutions and observations proposed by Polish architects, mostly for Polish public spaces, shall discuss whether one may observe positive tendencies towards the return to urbanity and to human, communal character of city’s public spaces.

Episodic formulae are a representational technique that emerged from artificial intelligence in order to capture the gist of situations and epistemic states in a narrative plot. Arguably, this formalism can be applied as well to complex situations of name-bestowing and evolving perceptions of the name adopted. In the situation we analyse with epistemic formulae in this paper, the Manhattan entrepreneur who had launched a literary magazine and then found a very affluent funder for also starting a book operation, expectably felt obliged to accept her suggestion of a name for his firm. At the time, in New York City he could be expected to find out easily that the name Ecco was the Italian adverb ecco for ‘here is…’ or ‘here you go’ and so forth. Eventually, he found out that the ketchup heiress who funded him had suggested to him the name of her beloved little dog that she once owned. This time, it was private knowledge, rather than available knowledge. One can figure out (from general patterns of how people feel or behave) that she wanted a memorial for her dog, and the publisher could be expected to have made sense of that once aware, but it also brought to the fore how their balance of power affected what she could afford vis-à-vis him. The set of formulae shown here illustrates the potential for onomastic research to develop a rigorous representation for situational constellations of name-bestowing and bearing a name that thus far it could explain just informally in narrative form.

The author presents some results of her research of the indicated period, which was carried out on the basis of a specially compiled questionnaire in places of compact residence of Lipovans in such villages as Kunicha, Egorovka, etc., as well as in the city of Chisinau. There are a number of preventive actions and prohibitions aimed at ensuring the health and strength of the woman in labor and her baby. Often they are based on common sense, on pragmatics, but not always the informants could explain the reasons for certain prohibitions. A pregnant woman was prohibited from doing, for example, the following actions: sewing; stepping over a long (wire, rope) or sharp object; contacting with animal hair (dogs, cats, etc.); touching her own body when frightened (for example, during a fire); looking at the deceased through the window, etc. According to the testimony of informants, much attention was paid to protecting the woman in labor from the „evil eye”. And if this happened, then they were treated with prayers and herbs. There were also signs by which they tried to guess the sex of the unborn child. Before giving birth, a woman usually confesses to her spiritual father.

Pronunciation is, unarguably, an essential factor that decides the success of communication. Poor pronunciation not only affects the speakers’ self - confidence but can also cause a misunderstanding or even communication break - down in the worst case. Consequently, it has gained considerable attention in English learning and teaching. Both teachers and language educators have struggled to make sure their learners can pronounce at the most satisfactory level. A variety of techniques and methods have been discussed. In this paper, the author has examined the advantages of group work as an alternative way to improve English majors’ pronunciation skill in her own educational setting with specific characteristics of its own students. The results show that group work can help increase the learners’ amount of practice time and their engagement in the lessons, boost their learning motivation. Besides, some suggestions have also been made to exploit this technique most efficiently, which include rearrangement of physical setting, applying suitable assessment methods, practical guides and reasonable grouping of students. Due to limited time, resources and the scope of this paper, the study has been done basing on the review and analysis of related literature and the real conditions of her school. However, the findings will certainly bring more insights and serve as encouragement for teachers and educators to apply in similar language teaching contexts.

El presente artículo es la síntesis del trabajo realizado en el contexto del Proyecto PATRAC, “Patrimonio Accesible: I+D+i para una cultura sin barreras”, para desarrollar una herramienta informática capaz de realizar rutas óptimas en ámbitos urbanos teniendo en cuenta ciertos parámetros de accesibilidad física, como son la pendiente, la anchura y la altura mínimas o la iluminación. El desarrollo de la herramienta supone una novedad metodológica en lo que a la creación y rectificación de la información de partida se refiere, ya que se genera información a partir de una nube de puntos proveniente de una Láser Escáner Terrestre y se rectifica utilizando técnicas avanzadas existentes en los Sistemas de Información Geográfica (SIG). Esta información cartográfica, correspondiente al casco antiguo del municipio de Tossa de Mar, es la base sobre la cual trabaja el módulo de rutas óptimas de un SIG permitiendo al usuario realizar una ruta entre dos puntos de interés existentes en el casco antiguo. La personalización del módulo ha requerido, previamente, un análisis de las condiciones de accesibilidad del ámbito de estudio y, posteriormente, tareas de programación para incorporar los valores mínimos de aspectos como la pendiente, la anchura de las calles, la iluminación, entre otros, al módulo de cálculo de rutas óptimas para que lo tenga en cuenta en sus funciones de optimización. El resultado final es una aplicación web que permite al usuario escoger la ruta óptima entre dos puntos de interés teniendo en cuenta el tipo de discapacidad que padece. A parte de la información gráfica con el trazado de la ruta óptima la aplicación ofrece al usuario la distancia de dicha ruta y la visualización de un video 3D con el recorrido de la ruta, el cual ha sido elaborado a partir del modelo 3D generado con el laser escáner terrestre. This paper is the result of the work developed under the PATRAC Project (Accessible Heritage: R&D+innovation for a culture without obstacles) for the development a software tool capable of solving optimal routes in urban areas, considering parameters for the evaluation of its physical accessibility such as slope, narrow passages, low height clearance and insufficient lighting. The development of this tool is a methodological innovation on the creation and rectification of data sources since it generates information from a Laser Terrestrial Scanner (LTS) point cloud output, corrected using advanced Geographical Information Systems (GIS) technologies. This cartographical information, corresponding to the city of Tossa de Mar old town, is the reference used by the GIS optimal route solver which allows the user to find the best route between two points of interest in the old town. The development of the solver has required an initial analysis of the accessibility status of the study area followed by programming tasks to integrate the acceptable values of slope, width, height and lighting, among others, into the optimal route solver parameters so they are evaluated when performing its optimization tasks. The end result is a web application that allows the user to find the optimal route between any two points of interest considering his or her disability. In addition to the graphical information of the optimal route plan, the application shows the user the length of the route and displays a 3D video following the route path, created from the 3D model generated from the Laser Terrestrial Scanner.

In recent years much has been written and exhibited regarding Lina Bo Bardi, the Italian/Brazilian architect (1914-1992). This paper aims to look at the phenomenon of cultural displacement and the dissemination of her design thinking as a major female figure in a male dominated profession. This investigation is distinguished from others in that it addresses the importance of regional and cultural influences that formed Lina’s design philosophy in her early years in Italy. Cultural displacement has long played a significant role in the creative process for artists. Often major innovators in literature are immigrants as elements of strangeness, distance, and alienation all contribute to their creativity. The premise is that critical distance is paramount for reflection as a change of context unfolds unforeseen possibilities. Displacement was a consistent element throughout the trajectory of Lina’s architectural career as she moved from Rome to Milan, from Milan to Sao Paolo from Sao Paolo to Bahia and back to Sao Paolo. Viewing this form of detachment and dislocation permits insight into her career and body of work as displacement mediates the paradoxical relationship between time and space. The paper will examine three distinct periods in her career. The first period is set in Rome, where she assimilated the city, showed artistic aptitude and spent her university years studying under Piacentiniand Giovannoni. The second period is set in Milan, where she developed impressive editorial and layout skills in publications work with Gio Ponti and BrunoZevi. and was influenced by Antonio Gramsci’s writings. The third is set in Brazil, where she builds and evolves as an architect via what she absorbed in Rome, wrote in Milan, and finally realized in Brazil. After Italy’s collapse in WWII Lina writes, draws, edits, critiques the plight of the Italians in need of better housing and circumstances. She leaves Milan with her new husband, PM Bardi (a prominent journalist, art critic) for Brazil. In Sao Paolo she absorbs the optimism and positive direction of Brazil. Her early design work in Brazil echoes European modernism, but when she travels to Bahia and becomes aware of the social conditions, she draws from her Italian experiences of and ideas of transforming lives through craft. Her architectural projects become directly responsive to the culture of Bahia and the politics of poverty. Lina’s design thinking evolves and parallels George Kubler’s study, The Shape of Time, and the history of man-made objects by bridging the divide between art and material culture.

This work used qualitative methodology together with methods such as questionnaires, observation, and semi-structured interviews to discover the influence of games in speaking classes. The data collected was analyzed in a descriptive way. The results from this innovation prove that using games in speaking English is one of the effective methods to help students be more confident and remember vocabulary. The university the researcher carried out her research is located in Tan Phu District called Ho Chi Minh City University of Food Industry (HUFI). It is a moderate campus where the researcher has spent nearly six years teaching English.

The SARS-COV-2 virus was responsible for the Covid-19 pandemic, starting its first infections in Wuhan, China. The present work aims to analyze the clinical case of a family nucleus resident (resident) of the city of Joao Pessoa/PB - Brazil affected (affected) by Covid-19. The family consists of three people: a 23-year-old woman (Patient A), a one-year-old child (Patient B) and a 31-year-old man (Patient C). The systematized analysis of the report of symptoms over the days, diagnosis and medical (medical) diagnosis, interpretation of computed tomography (CT), in addition to performing bibliographic searches for the basis of the work, framing the symptoms of the patients according to the groups proposed by Sudre et al. (2020) for Covid-19. Patient A was in group 2 (similar to influenza, with fever) and presented pulmonary alterations on her CT. Patient B presented mild symptoms of the disease. Patient C, on the other hand, was included in group 3 (gastrointestinal symptoms) and did not present pulmonary alterations on his CT.

This study examines the changes occurring in the built environment and in the social character of the Northeast neighborhood of Bozeman. This project was initiated at the request of the Northeast Neighborhood Association (NENA) whose members are concerned that growth is negatively impacting the unique character, affordability, and informal social interactions of their neighborhood. Working with the city of Bozeman and NENA, this project aims to document the existing character of the neighborhood and social, economic, and architectural changes as perceived by residents who participated in this research. Between Spring 2020 and Summer 2022, faculty and students from three MSU departments conducted and analyzed a physical inventory of the built environment, a survey, the PhotoVoicesNE report, and interviews of residents. The data collected here may be used by the city of Bozeman and NENA to develop neighborhood planning tools.

Marrickville is located in the western heart of inner-city Sydney and is the beneficiary of the centrifugal process that has forced many creatives out of the inner city itself and further out into more affordable suburbs. This locality is built on the lands of the Eora nation. It is one of the most culturally diverse communities in the country but is slowly being gentrified creating tensions between its light industrial heart, its creative industry community and inner city developers. SME’s, co-working spaces and live music venues, are all in jeopardy as they occupy light-industrial warehouses which either have been re-zoned or are under threat of re-zoning. Its location underneath the flight path of major air traffic may indeed be a saving factor in its preservation as the creative industries operate across all major sectors here and the air traffic noise keeps land prices down. Despite these pressures the creative industries in Marrickville have experienced substantial growth since 2011, with the current CI intensity sitting at 9.2%. This is the only region in this study where the cultural production sector holds more than half the employment for specialists and support workers, when compared to creative services.

More than 10,000 street children and youth live here in street situations. 19 street youth helped to create this story map by recording all the visual data and sharing their stories about their daily lives. The story map includes 9 sections and 2 galleries showing street children and youth’s daily lives in Bukavu and the work of Growing up on the Streets civil society partner PEDER to help them. Chapters include details of how street children and youth collect plastics from the shores of Lake Kivu to sell, they cook, and share food together, or buy from restaurants or stalls. Young women earn their living in sex work and care for their children and young men relax, bond and hope to make extra money by gambling and betting. The original language recorded in the videos is Swahili, this has been translated into English and French for the two versions of the map.

This research assesses the impacts of displacement on quality of life and human rights in resettlement villages in Tacloban, a city in Region VIII of the Philippines that was hit the hardest by Typhoon Haiyan in 2013. Typhoon Haiyan, one of the most powerful tropical storms ever recorded, displaced over four million people in the Philippines. To understand the long-term impacts of displacement from this disaster, SEI and the Philippines’ national-level independent Commission on Human Rights (CHR) began research in 2020 on the development implications of disaster displacement and durable solutions. The study aims to inform legislative and policy processes related to human rights, development, transformative disaster risk reduction, long-term disaster recovery, durable solutions and internal displacement in the Philippines. The findings presented here are the first results from this study, which will be published in whole as a separate report.

This rapid literature review collates available evidence on the causes and consequences of air pollution in the Republic of North Macedonia (here after North Macedonia). It draws on a diverse range of sources from multiple academic disciplines and grey literature. The literature highlights that North Macedonia is considered to have some of the worst air quality in the West Balkans, and consequently some of the worst globally. Air pollution is a significant problem in North Macedonian cities and urban centres with exposure to high levels of particulate matter (PM) a particular issue. The PM2.5 size fraction is the focus of many air pollution studies because it is associated with a range of adverse health outcomes, it is also the focus of this review. This review identifies a limited but expanding evidence base discussing air pollution in North Macedonia. Studies are principally focussed on the capital city (Skopje) and ambient (outdoor) air pollution. There is a limited literature that discusses air quality issues outside of the capital and a dearth of evidence on household (indoor) air pollution.
