This dissertation studies partnerships among non- governmental organizations (NGOs) and the resulting consequences of these collaborations. The presence of NGOs in the international system is recognized with scholarly works examining what they are, what they do, and what is their role. However, it is also necessary to systematically analyze the causes for collaborations among NGOs and the following consequences. I ask what determines for NGOs to partner with one another. And, who benefits from these collaborations? I carefully place my study within the broader context of the main international relations paradigms and within the specific debates concerning the NGOs. Using social network analysis, quantitative tools, and in-depth interviews I find that similarity is a main determinant for NGOs to collaborate with one another. Importantly, my findings show that not only shared altruistic goals, as proposed by the dominant literature, but also shared strategic goals matter in the choices for partners. I further show that shared altruistic and strategic goals also influence who the final beneficiaries from the collaborations are. My findings reveal that less often vulnerable populations receive a direct help, even when the organizations advance principled goals. I conclude that NGOs have not only altruistic goals but also strategic needs and wants. The forging of their partnerships and the outcomes of their collaborations are influenced by these distinct goals. NGOs, as strategic actors, make complex decisions, that momentously bring a limited impact on vulnerable populations and the international system overall.

This paper uses the relationship between female partners and associates in the 200 largest United States law firms to explore the impact of senior-level women on junior-level women. I look within firms to see how the percentage of female associates changes based upon the percentage of female partners and how other mechanisms effect the causality of that relationship. I find that a 10-percentage point increase in female partners leads to a 4.7-percentage point increase in female associates, but approximately half of the effect is due to fixed factors within firms and years. This effect is asymmetric; increases in female partners have much larger effects on female associates than do decreases. Female partners also have a greater effect in firms with fewer female partners. Next, I use time lags and find that while female partners have a significant impact on female associates’ retention, the decision to join the firm is influenced by other female associates. Furthermore, I find that the female partners present when current associates were summer associates have a negative impact on the full-time hiring of female associates and their decision to join the firm full-time. Finally, I find that the positive impact of female partners was substantially mitigated during the Global Financial Crisis

Early studies of what motivates volunteering often have had an older sample and youth organizations have not been studied. A survey was used to study motives for volunteering in Swedish youth organizations. The importance of age and years of volunteering was studied. In the analysis 102 persons in age between 17 and 59 years participated. The participants ranked the motives as followed: knowledge, development, values, social, career and protection. The result of a serie of analysis of variance showed that the younger named career and development as a motive significant higher than the older. A significant interaction showed that youth who had volunteered for a longer time valued social motivation higher than youth who had volunteered for a shorter time, while it was the other way around for the older participants.

I analyserna ingick 102 personer i åldrarna 17-59.

Background: Stress is increasing rapidly in society and especially among those studying. Some studies highlight the unique potential of universities, as a social coping resource, to help students maintain mental health and reduce stress. However, there is limited knowledge regarding how universities are reacting to this stress. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to investigate how universities react to the problem with stress among business students and how they act as a social coping resource. Further, this paper aims at investigating where more efforts are needed. Method: The paper has applied a qualitative research method, using a multiple case study where 14 semi-structured interviews were conducted with representatives from business schools and student health organizations from 4 Swedish universities. The study applied a thematic analysis. Findings: Universities react and serve as a social coping resource by working preventative, establishing a positive study environment, easing the transition and adjustment to the university, and by providing information and feedback to the students. Further, they are looking into course dispositions where workload should be evenly distributed. The student health organizations are available to everyone, no matter reason and offer group-activities and individual conversations in accordance with what the students need help with regarding stress. The university also tries to promote certain coping strategies, where the business schools focus on problem-focused coping and the student health organization on emotion-focused coping. Even though some collaboration is found, especially at the beginning of programs, there is a need to further work on the infrastructure between different instances at the university to react faster to issues regarding student stress. Conclusion: Universities tries to work preventative and react fast to the issue, but students tend to seek support when they already have been stressed for a long time. Universities focus a lot on students starting their studies and tend to treat student by student rather than applying a holistic and long-term perspective. To react better to this problem there is a need for a better infrastructure to better serve as a social coping resource, where the student health organization are included more during the studies. Contributions: The study has contributed to further knowledge of universities’ role as a social coping resources and their reaction to student stress, and further contributes to what type of support or activities that can be improved from the universities side to reduce stress among students. The study gives an insight to universities' infrastructure and support system regarding to reduce students' stress.

Sociology
Ph.D.
In the U.S., wealth is unequally distributed across racial and income groups. Scholars have promoted numerous strategies to address inequalities in wealth, but evidence about their effectiveness is limited. This dissertation examines whether community-based organizations can help low-income individuals improve their credit usage and credit scores as part of a strategy to help them build their wealth. Credit histories and scores influence access to affordable loans and other forms of credit as well as employment and housing opportunities, insurance rates, and utility and rental deposits. As a result, credit plays an important role in individuals’ ability to weather financial crises, increase savings, and build wealth. Specifically, I assess the impacts and implementation of a program model that integrates financial education and counseling into employment services for low-income job seekers. The study uses a comparison group design to assess program impacts, comparing the outcomes of program participants to those of a matched group of low-income individuals who were seeking assistance from public employment agencies that did not offer financial or credit counseling. I use multivariate regression analysis to assess differences in the outcomes of program participants and comparison group members and to examine whether some organizations were more effective than others in helping participants achieve the outcomes. I also conduct a qualitative assessment of the organizational, programmatic, and contextual factors that influenced program implementation and outcomes across the five organizations in the study. I found that community-based organizations can help low-income individuals make progress in building positive credit histories. By combining financial education and counseling with employment services, the programs increased job seekers’ receipt of financial counseling relative to the comparison group, and program participants were more likely than comparison group members to have an increase in positive activity on their credit reports two years after entering the program. However, overall the program did not increase the likelihood that participants had a credit score or that they had a prime score after two years. Only program participants who had substantial recent credit activity when they entered the program were more likely than their counterparts in the comparison group to have a prime credit score after two years. Some organizations were more effective than others in helping low-income individuals achieve the targeted credit outcomes. Four of the five had impacts on whether participants had positive activity on their credit reports. One organization also had positive impacts on the likelihood of having a credit score and of having a prime score among all individuals who received financial counseling while two others had positive impacts on scores for subgroups of participants. One organization had no positive effects. The implementation analysis revealed that environmental, organizational, and programmatic factors interacted to produce differences in outcomes across organizations. Organizational and managerial experience with and commitment to the model and goals and integration of the model into the organizations’ core services were critical to effective implementation. The three organizations whose financial coaches embraced the model’s credit-building approach, which counsels individuals to use credit responsibly, had more positive impacts on credit outcomes than those that did not. The results also provide evidence that the characteristics of the communities the organizations served influenced outcomes. Communities’ racial composition was correlated with indicators of economic health, the presence of financial institutions, and credit availability, and the findings indicate that individuals in mixed race and majority-Hispanic communities were better able to access credit than those in majority-Black communities. This dissertation contributes to the policy and research literature in a number of ways. It uses a rigorous methodology to assess program effects, examines change in credit behavior and outcomes, assesses how implementation processes influence outcomes, and includes a broader segment of the low-income population than past studies, including those who lack credit histories. The findings provide evidence that low-income people of color face significant barriers to accessing mainstream forms of credit and suggest that policies are needed to increase consumers’ understanding of credit and access to credit at affordable rates and terms. The findings contribute to research and theory on the wealth accumulation process and can inform the work of policymakers and practitioners seeking to increase the financial well-being of low-income people of color.

This study examined the relationship between helping (organizational citizenship behaviours) and workplace safety. It is the second study in a sequence, building on an initial study by Burt and Williams (2012). The aims of the current study are three-fold. Firstly, further evidence was sought to support the argument put forth by Burt and Williams (2012) suggesting that there are situations in which helping behaviours can lead to an increase in safety risk. Additionally, based on findings from Burt and Williams (2012), the following two situations were investigated: I) why do helpers often not tell the target of help that help has been given; and, II) in the instance where help inadvertently leads to a safety risk increase for the target, why does the target fail to communicate this risk increase back to the helper. The personality traits of humility and agreeableness were hypothesised to positively relate to the first and second situations, respectively. The sample consisted of 79 participants across a variety of high risk occupations. Participants completed an anonymous questionnaire, containing measures of job risk, negative outcomes of helping behaviours, humility, agreeableness, single item measures to assess situation I and II, and subsequent measures to further investigate these two situations. The results showed clear evidence that helping can be associated with safety risks. Both of the personality-based hypotheses failed to reach significance. However, the results suggest that helpers often fail to tell the target of help that help has been given, through a lack of understanding regarding the importance of communicating one’s helping behaviours, and a lack of time or opportunity. Additionally, results suggest that the instance where help inadvertently leads to an increased safety risk for the target (but the target fails to inform the helper of this risk increase), occurs through the target wanting to protect the helper’s confidence, and not wishing to be seen as ungrateful. The results provide valuable information to significantly add to the limited literature regarding helping behaviours and occupational safety. The findings from this study potentially allow organizations to decrease the negative safety outcomes of such behaviours. Limitations and suggestions for future research are discussed.

This study employed an experimental design intended to be an analog to the workplace to examine a person by situation interactive effect on OCBs, which were evaluated as prosocial behaviors. This study also sought to provide initial empirical support for the two-stage social cognitive model of OCBs proposed by Hauenstein and Kalanick (2008). Participants were 194 undergraduates. The study was a 2 (Helpfulness) by 2 (Fairness) design. After completing distracter tasks 1 and 2, participants received either a helpfulness prime or a control prime (task 3). Participants then either experienced either a fair manipulation or an unfair manipulation. Results indicated a distinction between the decision to help and helping effort, which has not been thoroughly examined in literature on OCBs. Results revealed main effects for the helpfulness prime and fairness manipulation on the decision to engage in helping. The nature of these effects was that participants helped more when they were primed with helpfulness and when they experienced fairness. However, once helping commenced, there was an interactive effect between helpfulness and fairness such that the helpfulness prime had a stronger effect on participants treated unfairly. Implications for future research on OCBs are discussed.

This study examined the relationship between corporate social responsibility (CSR), job satisfaction, and stress. Specifically, job satisfaction was hypothesized to act as a mediator between CSR and stress. For the purpose of this study, corporate volunteerism was used as the specific type of CSR assessed. To complete this study, 178 participants were recruited from Amazon Mechanical Turk. Each participant filled out a satisfaction, stress, and volunteerism questionnaire. Support for the hypotheses was mixed. Volunteerism and stress did not have a significant relationship with each other, which meant that job satisfaction did not act as a mediator between the two. However, job satisfaction did have a significant, positive relationship with volunteerism. Job satisfaction and stress were also found to be positively related. Although some hypotheses were not supported, the findings of this study do provide valuable insight into the relationship between volunteerism, satisfaction, and stress. Important implications for practitioners are also discussed.

Vicarious trauma poses a risk factor for clinicians. The purpose of this qualitative multiple case study is to examine the individual and organizational resources used by counselors who have self-reported vicarious trauma and have continue practicing their profession effectively. Two theories that comprised the framework of this study were: the social cognitive theory and the constructivist self-development theory. The sample consisted of 10 counselors who self-reported vicarious trauma. Data were collected using semi-structured interviews, observations, and then were analyzed using thematic analysis. NVivo software was utilized to come up with distinct similarities in each of the participants. These similarities were then further analyzed to reveal concrete coping strategies that helping professionals can utilize to prevent the effects of vicarious trauma. The top coping skills were discovered to be as follows: effective transition time, spiritual practices, psychological preparedness, wellness, and self-control. Furthermore, organizational skills were also examined to see the effects the organization had on vicarious trauma. The leading organizational coping skills that were acknowledged were: co-workers and supervisor involvement, self-care evenings, weekly wellness meetings, and consultation groups. This study will provide positive social change implications by enabling present and future mental health professionals to gain insight into the coping strategies used to manage vicarious trauma successfully.

The study’s purpose was to explore a team’s perception of transition within the clubexperienced by both players and coaches, investigate influences of the clubs transition onbasic needs satisfaction as perceived by players as well as coaches and lastly conduct a shortterm intervention aimed at facilitating players’ adaptation to the clubs transition. The study isbased on three theories: the Athletic Career Transitional Model, Self Determination theoryand the holistic ecological approach. The study’s participants all represented a club in thesouth of Sweden and consisted of a total of 23 players at the age of 15-17 (M= 15,96, SD=0,64), the club manager, coaches and parents. The study was a mixed method interventionstudy (questionnaire, semi-structured interviews and an intervention consisting of educationalsessions and an implementation phase). The study revealed that the club is still facilitating with remnants of its transition despiteover-looking it. The study found the targeted club to predominantly demand elite investmentfrom players, experience barriers regarding individual differences and communication withinthe club and resources in the form of popular, well-educated coaches. The clubs transition wasfound to influence all basic needs in some way, the change in management brought positivevalues with autonomy supportive measures and coaches. Increased elite investment anddeficient communication within the club also influenced basic needs. Results from theintervention are presented as well as implications with a basis in the theories used.

Annotation:
The prevention of psychosocial risks and promoting the quality of working life has attracted great interest in recent years. However, the psychological mechanisms behind these links are not yet sufficiently affirmed. To better understand the mechanisms involved, our research has focused on organizational justice in a theoretical and applied perspective. Our main goal was to make an effective contribution to knowledge about the links between the right management and affective states, commitment, burnout and other variables closely with the well-being and positive work attitudes. Specifically, we wanted to bring empirical evidence to a fair application of management in the prevention of burnout at work. Our job was to test a relational model with 4 studies. First, two correlational studies have been conducted, one on climate justice and the other on specific events of justice. The results of these early studies show that perceptions of justice are associated with burnout and commitment to work through the mediation of positive and negative affect. Then, two experimental studies were conducted to verify the relationship of cause and effect between perceptions of justice and affective states. One of the studies focused on scenarios as vector perceptions of justice and the last study was conducted in organizations through training to team supervisors to validate the results in natural context and give birth to a reflection on the Application training at the right management. The links highlighted by these studies were used to develop a better understanding of the effects of justice in the emotional experience, cognitive and behavioral in terms of research but also to refine the reflections on the prevention of occupational health

Disease is an unpredictable and risky event for people. In particular, it is a rare disease caused by genetic defects - muscular dystrophy. Apart from suffering from life-threatening disease, it also faces many challenges. If we can provide and support to patients with the same disease during the illness, the panic and the lack of understanding of the disease will be less, and we can achieve better adaptability and even show extraordinary strength. However, the "Taiwan SMA Families" and the "Taiwan Muscular Dystrophy Association Taiwan Muscular Dystrophy Association" are a group of diseased and diseased patients. The main members of the group are patients and their families, as well as physicians and nurses, workers, physicists, physiotherapists, etc.serve patients to connect resources and improve the quality of life of their patients. The research was conducted using qualitative research methods, supplemented by in-depth interviews and secondary data collection methods. The interviewees included social workers and disease patients of the disease societies. They had a deep understanding of the current of muscular dystrophy in the society, the patients had reached the goal of optimizing the quality of their own quality of life in relation to the assistance provided by the association, and how the association assisted parties in providing resources to provide patients and families with difficulties. The study finds that the Association’s lack of early resources is mainly to solve the most basic needs of the patients in a case-by-case manner. With the connection of services and the abundance of resources for more service use, it also positively links resources and promotes relevant organizations. The approach of the initiative allows the government, the State Health Administration, and others to find out that assistive devices have an important influence on the quality of life of disease patients; also allow society to better understand cognition of rare diseases, break through the previous framework for disease patients, and promote through associations. With the activities of the initiative, the self-worth consciousness of the patients can be better promoted. In addition, patients with muscular dystrophy in the field of employment are also the goals of the association for further assistance and development.

In psychology, "Guilt proneness" is regarded as a negative emotion. In past studies, the research often focus on psychology area, there is little empirical research on the internal environment of the organization. Therefore, this research will explore the impact of this personality trait on employees' related motivations, attitudes and behaviors, and also find out that what kind of situation the following may cause different adjustments conditions. This study conducted a questionnaire survey on the face of fairness and unfairness of employees in the organization, as well as the strength and weakness of peers. There are total 382 questionnaires in this research, including 343 valid questionnaires and 39 invalid questionnaires. The results show that individuals with guilt tendencies have higher organizational citizenship behavior, work commitment and leadership intentions. In addition, organizational altruism can be used as an intermediary project between organizational citizenship behavior, work input and leadership intentions. At the same time, in a less fair situation, individuals with a guilty tendency have higher organizational citizenship behavior and leadership intentions, and in the face of weaker members, they will have higher leadership intentions. In summary, this study attempts to use guilt as the core of research to explore the impact of employee-related behaviors and attitudes of this personality trait, and the research results can further broaden the application of this trait theory.

Taking a positive psychology approach, this research looked at a little-studied subset of working women and men - those who experienced changes affecting their work and self-reported as handling them well. The primary purpose was to explore what strategies they employed that helped them handle change well, what hindered doing well, and whether there were things that would have been helpful but were unavailable. There were two secondary purposes: (1) to gain insight into the nature of the changes they had faced, the impacts of those changes, whether they had always handled change well, and if not, when that changed and why; and (2) to explore whether the research interview itself had an impact on participants. This was primarily a qualitative, exploratory study that used the Critical Incident Technique (CIT) (Flanagan, 1954) to elicit helping and hindering critical incidents and wish list items; and open-ended interview questions (Cozby, 1997; Palys, 1997) to gather information about participants' experiences of change. A quantitative component was embedded in the form of a pre- and post-interview scaling question (Palys, 1997) to determine if the interview had an impact. Data from the CIT portion of the study elicited ten helping, hindering and wish list categories: (1) Personal Attitudes/Traits/Emotional Set; (2) Support from Friends and Family; (3) Internal Framework and Boundaries; (4) Taking Action; (5) Self-care; (6) Support from Professionals; (7) Management Style and Work Environment; (8) Skill/Role Competence; (9) Support from Work Colleagues; and (10) Personal Life Changes/Issues, suggesting strategies can be employed that facilitate handling change well. Data from the quantitative portion resulted in a borderline large effect size, suggesting the interview had an impact on participants. Surprisingly, results from participants' stories of change and its impacts strongly paralleled results of studies in the unemployment, transition, burnout, and posttraumatic growth literature, suggesting this sample of workers was dealing with chaotic environments in many domains of their lives and even though they self-reported as doing well with the changes they were facing, there was a cost involved. Implications for workers, counsellors, vocational psychologists, career counsellors, human resource professionals, organizations, and future research and theory are discussed.

Nowadays, the service industry has become the main body of economic activities as well as the major source of employment in Taiwan. As the largest sub-sector of the service industry, retail business is closely related to our daily lives, where its employee behavioral performances play a vital role. However, specific characteristics related to the retail business make intra-role conflict, which affects behavioral performances and organizational commitment, apparent. In addition, employees’ behavioral identification influences their behavioral performances. While a plethora of studies have shown that signing activates self-identity, and that it affects the employee’s following behavioral performance, few studies have examined the effect of signature on employee behavior. The present study, therefore, conducted two experiments concerning intentions of in-role behavior and organizational citizenship behavior in retail service context. While Study 1 explored the effects of handwriting task and intra-role conflict on task performance intention, Study 2 investigated the effects of handwriting task, helping behavior, and identity-helping closeness on helping intention. The results in Study 1 revealed that although the signature effect on task performance intention was not significant, intra-role conflict had a significant impact on task performance intention. The participants’ task performance intentions were significant lower in a low-conflict context than in a high-conflict context. There was a significant interactive effect of intra-role conflict and handwriting task on task performance intention. In a low-conflict context, the task performance intention of the sign group was significant higher than that of the control group. In a high-conflict context, however, the task performance intention of the sign group was significant lower than that of the control group. The results in Study 2 indicated that while handwriting task did not have a significant effect on helping intention, identity-helping closeness had a significant effect on helping intention. The helping intention of close identity-helping closeness was significant higher than that of distant identity-helping closeness. In addition, there was a significant interactive effect of handwriting task and identity-helping closeness on helping intention. In distant identity-helping closeness, the helping intention of the sign group was significant lower than that of the control group. In close identity-helping closeness, however, the helping intention of the sign group was significant higher than that of the control group

Theoretic and empirical studies suggest that affect at work is an important component of job attitudes and an important predictor of employee behaviors. This study extended previous research and focused on the relationships between positive affectivity and employee behaviors. Furthermore, this study examined the moderating effects of the perceived organizational support on the relationship of affect. Results from 208 employees of 15 films supported the hypotheses and showed that positive affectivity was significantly positive related to helping behavior and negative related to withdrawal behavior. In addition, employees with high positive affectivity exhibited the more helping behavior and the less withdrawal behavior when they perceived higher organizational support

It’s old saying that helping others is the source of happiness. The characteristic of teachers is a typical position to help others. How is the effect of teachers’ organizational citizenship behavior on psychological well-being, whether teachers could find the pleasure in this position same as the old saying? Besides, most studys adopted social network as the mediate on psychological well-being. This study is to explore the effect of pet owner as one of social network. After literature review, pet owner could form the sense of safty and intimacy and offer social support such as concern, valuable, and the feeling to be loved. It is worth to explore the influencial mechanism. This study is to use the data of Taitung Teachers Census in 2008. This study demonstrates that the effect of social network on psychological well-bing is larger than social economic status. Teachers could promote themselves psychological well-being by improving social network. It is worth to notice that pet owner could retard the feeling of melancholy. In addition, in terms of organizational citizenship behavior, teachers have more advantageous school and peer behavior, and they could increase their achievement. If teachers spend more time improving their teaching behavior after class, they could increase the feeling of melancholy as well as their achievement, and decrease the interpersonal isolation. Therefore, this study approximately supports the saying that helping others is the source of happiness.

Topic: Motion Composition for children with Autistic Spectrum Disorder Objectives: The aim of this thesis has been to find out the degree of mastery for individual performance of Motion Composition performed by children with Autistic Spectrum Disorder. Methods: Observation method was supplemented with video-recording that was conducted monthly. This was used to determine the degree of self-reliance. Also, feedback from other individuals has been used. Results: Outcomes of this survey indicate that children with Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) are able to individually perform Motion Composition. Some children need more time to perform perfectly, but they are able to memorize components of Motion Composition, arrange them in the correct order and after some rehearsal they are able to perform Motion Composition correctly. The level of performance for individual components is raised proportionally when children can see visual execution of each element and also hear its description. Evaluated results of a second scientific question, which was related to the level of performance difficulty of individual components of Motion Composition for children with ASD, have brought unanticipated results. We anticipated that isometric exercises would be the most difficult components of Motion Composition. According...

This master thesis illustrates the universality of Schwartz's value theory approach: culture of any group of people may be subject to the research and its value profile has a universal format. Both Czech and Finnish national value profiles and the value profiles of the helping professions in these two countries were calculated, based on data from The European Social Survey in 2012. On national levels, these profiles are representative. On the levels of helping professions, however, the profiles only serve as a model example-no representative data were available. In comparison with their national value profile, Czech model representatives of the helping professions attach more importance to all basic values in Schwartz's theory. In Finland, this is not the case for power, achievement, self-direction and security. This master thesis proposes several recommendations for potential surveys dealing with the impact of national culture on organization culture in health and social facilities. Especially, it highlights the necessity for quality value profiles of the structured helping professions. The reason for doing so is the outlined possibility (and maybe also necessity) to take different positions of individual professions into consideration. It also suggests to search for mathematical relations between...

The diploma thesis deals with an analysis of a concept of a value on the basis of the selected literature. It tries to point out a connection of ethical theories with a practical human behaviour. It has been structured from an explanation of key concepts as ethics, morality, manners; it examines a word of the value and fundamental philosophical theories which are associated with values. In detail it analyses the values in terms of so called philosophy of the material and formal subjectivism. It focuses on representatives of the phenomenology - Max Scheler, Nikolai Hartmann and Dietrich von Hildebrand. It specifies approaches to the values as well as in terms of a human personality, especially from a perspective of the analytical psychology. The thesis shows an importance of the values in the practical application - in the professional ethics of social work, where ethical codes provide an orientation for employees. Caritas Czech Republic was chosen as a model organization. That is also why a theological perspective on the values has been mentioned and basic values and principles of the Code of Caritas Czech Republic as well. This study should be a stimulus for a further exploration of the concept of the value and its significance for human beings. It considers the values to be a fundamental motivation that will lead mankind to a good behaviour (virtues) in the future.

In the light of the HIVAIDS pandemic in South Africa and its potential impact on learners, counselling is still the best available tool that can be used by the school management team to deal with the loss, pain, trauma and suffering experienced by the lear:ners. This study focuses on the role and functions of the school management team in managing the counselling of primary school learners affected by HIV/AIDS in Mount Ayliff District in the Eastern Cape, using a literature review and empirical· investigation. The former discusses the HIV/AIDS phenomenon, school policy on HIV/AIDS, HIV/AIDS counselling, and the role and functions of the school management team in managing school counselling services. Egan's model, known as the skilled helper model was used to provide an understanding of counselling services. A qualitative study investigated the views of a sample of management teams of three primary schools in Mount Ayliff District in the Eastern Cape. Sites and participants were selected by purposeful sampling. Data were collected by use of indepth interviews with two principals, two deputy principals, four heads of departments (HODs) and one senior teacher. All the interviews were tape-recorded and transcribed. Notes were also taken to supplement the audio-tapes. The data were later analysed. Essentially, findings illustrated that the school management team has a critical role in ensuring the provision of effective counselling services to those learners who are affected by HIV/AIDS. The data further reflected the importance of a school counsellor, an HIV/AIDS school policy and the Department of Education's intervention in training and empowering the management team in effectively managing the ravages of HIV/AIDS in schools.
