This article investigates how donation behavior to charitable organizations and helping intentions toward begging European Union (EU)-migrants are related. This question was tested by analyzing survey responses from 1,050 participants sampled from the general Swedish population. Although the overall results suggested that donations to charitable organizations were positively related to helping intentions toward beggars, the results differed substantially as a function of whether the organization was perceived to focus its efforts on outgroup victims or on ingroup victims. Specifically, whereas donation behavior toward outgroup-focused organizations clearly predicted more helping intentions toward beggars (also when controlling for demographics, education, income, religiosity, and political inclination), donation behavior toward ingroup-focused organizations predicted slightly less helping intentions toward beggars. We conclude that the type of charitable organization a person donates to might tell us more about his or her values and preferences than merely whether or not he or she donates at all.

Human resources are the most important asset in a company to get success of an organization/company. Many organizations face challenges such as how organizations respond to change from external and adapt to internal environment of organization. In this case OCB can increase organizational performance, because this behavior is the "oil" of social machine of the organization. In other words, with this behavior in social interaction the member from organization can be smooth, reduce disputes, and improve efficiency. OCB is a voluntary behavior that exceeds workers’ basic needs such as helping co-workers and courteous to others, which benefit an organization, and does not relate to the compensation system. The dimensions of OCB consist of altruism, conscientiousness, sportsmanship, courtesy, civic virtue. The factors affect the OCB, namely: culture and climate, personality and mood, organizational support, quality of interaction superiors and subordinates, tenure and gender. Implications of OCB are quality of service, performance groups, and turnover. The benefits from OCB to the company are improving the productivity of co-workers, increasing managers’ productivity, saving management’s and organization’s resources, saving energy resources to maintain the group function, to be an effective facility to coordinate the activities of the working groups, improving the ability from organization to attract and maintain best employees, improving the stability of organizational performance, and enhancing the organization's ability to adapt environmental changes. It can be said that if the company wants to increase employee’s OCB, the company should pay attention to the factors that influence employee’s OCB and OCB implications to the company.

Purpose – Building on trait activation theory, theory of other orientation, and self-perception theory, the purpose of this paper is to examine how employees’ perceptions of helping efficacy and instrumentality influence the relationship between their prosocial motive and helping behavior. Design/methodology/approach – Data from 304 supervisor-subordinate dyads in South Korea were analyzed. Hypotheses were tested using hierarchical multiple regression. Findings – The results show that prosocial motive had a stronger positive influence on helping behavior among employees with high levels of helping efficacy. However, contrary to our expectation, prosocial motive was more positively related to helping behavior when employees had high levels of helping instrumentality. Practical implications – Organizations need to present employees with effective, standardized work procedures to make them feel efficacy in helping others. It is also necessary for organizations to consider helping behavior an important factor in performance evaluation and to signify to employees that helping behavior will be rewarded. Social implications – Helping behavior is critical for the effectiveness of both organizations and society at large; voluntarily helping people can enhance various kinds of performance at the societal level and can contribute to people’s welfare. Thus, it is necessary to teach people how to help others and to recognize helping behavior. Originality/value – This study contributes to the understanding of when the influence of prosocial motive on helping is more strongly activated by incorporating employees’ perceptions of the contexts in which helping behavior operates – efficacy and instrumentality.

Abstract Background and Purpose: Self-organization in teams and Business Process Orientation have been subjects of many separate researches, yet there is lack of research actually joining it within a common research. The purpose of our research is to define a research model for new type of service organization - called SOPO (Self-Organised Process Organization). This model sets research base to determine SOPO’s maturity level and a self-assessment tool, helping new emergence or transitions of existing organization toward SOPO. Methodology: We conducted a case researches in three ICT service companies, which were undergoing a transition process towards SOPO. We conducted several in-depth, un-structured and structured part of interviews with employees holding three different positions in each organization. Hereby we present the researched organisation with most explicit case. Results: We defined the key elements of the model and tested it in a case research. Key elements are Self-Organised Work Teams (SOWT) and Business Process Orientation (BPO). Both SOWT and BPO are positively affecting level of SOPO. Level of SOPO is positively related to both, enthusiasm of personnel to work in self-organised environment and perceived Quality of Service (QS). Conclusion: SOPO model can be used: (1) in existing companies as a blueprint for SOPO implementation, (2) to assess the maturity level of companies reinventing their organizational structure, and (3) helping SOPO organizations to structure changes toward higher service quality. SOPO model is a viable starting point in further research. Further verification of the SOPO model by a quantitative research is needed.

PurposeThe purpose of this article is to develop a cross-level, theoretical model describing the process by which interpersonal helping becomes conspicuous, as well as the process by which interpersonal helping subsequently prospers or becomes eradicated in the organization.Design/methodology/approachA theoretical analysis was performed by drawing upon various management-related theories.FindingsWe propose that organizational crises foster the emergence of interpersonal helping. Additionally, the positive relationship between organizational crises and interpersonal helping is stronger (or weaker) when individuals possess higher levels of other-oriented (or self-oriented) motives. Furthermore, we propose that a sympathetic climate at the unit level and employee job crafting at the individual level result in the prosperity of interpersonal helping, whereas interpersonal helping is eradicated by a sarcastic atmosphere at the unit level and citizenship pressure at the individual level.Originality/valueTheoretically, we advance the literature by providing future research with a theoretical base for understanding interpersonal helping from a temporal and cross-level perspective. Practically, this article offers some managerial recommendations that help managers nurture interpersonal helping in organizations effectively.

Green Human Resource Management (GHRM) is very critical in helping different organizations achieve environmental sustainability. This is a novel concept in relatively many organizations and especially those in the developing countries. Although more effort is required to help organizations in the implementation of the green policy, some of these organizations have already embraced the concept and have been utilizing it in some or all their Human Resource Management (HRM) practices. The main HRM practices generally include recruitment and selection, training and development, performance management and appraisal, compensation and reward, empowerment and participation, and the management of the organizational culture. This shows that HRM has a major role to play in helping turn their particular organizations green. This sets the basis of this paper, which utilizes the desk research but proposes further research in the area considering that it is still a green concept in the field of HRM. For the purpose of this paper, the terms businesses, companies, organizations, and firms will be used interchangeably.

This dissertation studies partnerships among non- governmental organizations (NGOs) and the resulting consequences of these collaborations. The presence of NGOs in the international system is recognized with scholarly works examining what they are, what they do, and what is their role. However, it is also necessary to systematically analyze the causes for collaborations among NGOs and the following consequences. I ask what determines for NGOs to partner with one another. And, who benefits from these collaborations? I carefully place my study within the broader context of the main international relations paradigms and within the specific debates concerning the NGOs. Using social network analysis, quantitative tools, and in-depth interviews I find that similarity is a main determinant for NGOs to collaborate with one another. Importantly, my findings show that not only shared altruistic goals, as proposed by the dominant literature, but also shared strategic goals matter in the choices for partners. I further show that shared altruistic and strategic goals also influence who the final beneficiaries from the collaborations are. My findings reveal that less often vulnerable populations receive a direct help, even when the organizations advance principled goals. I conclude that NGOs have not only altruistic goals but also strategic needs and wants. The forging of their partnerships and the outcomes of their collaborations are influenced by these distinct goals. NGOs, as strategic actors, make complex decisions, that momentously bring a limited impact on vulnerable populations and the international system overall.

This paper uses the relationship between female partners and associates in the 200 largest United States law firms to explore the impact of senior-level women on junior-level women. I look within firms to see how the percentage of female associates changes based upon the percentage of female partners and how other mechanisms effect the causality of that relationship. I find that a 10-percentage point increase in female partners leads to a 4.7-percentage point increase in female associates, but approximately half of the effect is due to fixed factors within firms and years. This effect is asymmetric; increases in female partners have much larger effects on female associates than do decreases. Female partners also have a greater effect in firms with fewer female partners. Next, I use time lags and find that while female partners have a significant impact on female associates’ retention, the decision to join the firm is influenced by other female associates. Furthermore, I find that the female partners present when current associates were summer associates have a negative impact on the full-time hiring of female associates and their decision to join the firm full-time. Finally, I find that the positive impact of female partners was substantially mitigated during the Global Financial Crisis

Early studies of what motivates volunteering often have had an older sample and youth organizations have not been studied. A survey was used to study motives for volunteering in Swedish youth organizations. The importance of age and years of volunteering was studied. In the analysis 102 persons in age between 17 and 59 years participated. The participants ranked the motives as followed: knowledge, development, values, social, career and protection. The result of a serie of analysis of variance showed that the younger named career and development as a motive significant higher than the older. A significant interaction showed that youth who had volunteered for a longer time valued social motivation higher than youth who had volunteered for a shorter time, while it was the other way around for the older participants.

I analyserna ingick 102 personer i åldrarna 17-59.

Background: Stress is increasing rapidly in society and especially among those studying. Some studies highlight the unique potential of universities, as a social coping resource, to help students maintain mental health and reduce stress. However, there is limited knowledge regarding how universities are reacting to this stress. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to investigate how universities react to the problem with stress among business students and how they act as a social coping resource. Further, this paper aims at investigating where more efforts are needed. Method: The paper has applied a qualitative research method, using a multiple case study where 14 semi-structured interviews were conducted with representatives from business schools and student health organizations from 4 Swedish universities. The study applied a thematic analysis. Findings: Universities react and serve as a social coping resource by working preventative, establishing a positive study environment, easing the transition and adjustment to the university, and by providing information and feedback to the students. Further, they are looking into course dispositions where workload should be evenly distributed. The student health organizations are available to everyone, no matter reason and offer group-activities and individual conversations in accordance with what the students need help with regarding stress. The university also tries to promote certain coping strategies, where the business schools focus on problem-focused coping and the student health organization on emotion-focused coping. Even though some collaboration is found, especially at the beginning of programs, there is a need to further work on the infrastructure between different instances at the university to react faster to issues regarding student stress. Conclusion: Universities tries to work preventative and react fast to the issue, but students tend to seek support when they already have been stressed for a long time. Universities focus a lot on students starting their studies and tend to treat student by student rather than applying a holistic and long-term perspective. To react better to this problem there is a need for a better infrastructure to better serve as a social coping resource, where the student health organization are included more during the studies. Contributions: The study has contributed to further knowledge of universities’ role as a social coping resources and their reaction to student stress, and further contributes to what type of support or activities that can be improved from the universities side to reduce stress among students. The study gives an insight to universities' infrastructure and support system regarding to reduce students' stress.

Sociology
Ph.D.
In the U.S., wealth is unequally distributed across racial and income groups. Scholars have promoted numerous strategies to address inequalities in wealth, but evidence about their effectiveness is limited. This dissertation examines whether community-based organizations can help low-income individuals improve their credit usage and credit scores as part of a strategy to help them build their wealth. Credit histories and scores influence access to affordable loans and other forms of credit as well as employment and housing opportunities, insurance rates, and utility and rental deposits. As a result, credit plays an important role in individuals’ ability to weather financial crises, increase savings, and build wealth. Specifically, I assess the impacts and implementation of a program model that integrates financial education and counseling into employment services for low-income job seekers. The study uses a comparison group design to assess program impacts, comparing the outcomes of program participants to those of a matched group of low-income individuals who were seeking assistance from public employment agencies that did not offer financial or credit counseling. I use multivariate regression analysis to assess differences in the outcomes of program participants and comparison group members and to examine whether some organizations were more effective than others in helping participants achieve the outcomes. I also conduct a qualitative assessment of the organizational, programmatic, and contextual factors that influenced program implementation and outcomes across the five organizations in the study. I found that community-based organizations can help low-income individuals make progress in building positive credit histories. By combining financial education and counseling with employment services, the programs increased job seekers’ receipt of financial counseling relative to the comparison group, and program participants were more likely than comparison group members to have an increase in positive activity on their credit reports two years after entering the program. However, overall the program did not increase the likelihood that participants had a credit score or that they had a prime score after two years. Only program participants who had substantial recent credit activity when they entered the program were more likely than their counterparts in the comparison group to have a prime credit score after two years. Some organizations were more effective than others in helping low-income individuals achieve the targeted credit outcomes. Four of the five had impacts on whether participants had positive activity on their credit reports. One organization also had positive impacts on the likelihood of having a credit score and of having a prime score among all individuals who received financial counseling while two others had positive impacts on scores for subgroups of participants. One organization had no positive effects. The implementation analysis revealed that environmental, organizational, and programmatic factors interacted to produce differences in outcomes across organizations. Organizational and managerial experience with and commitment to the model and goals and integration of the model into the organizations’ core services were critical to effective implementation. The three organizations whose financial coaches embraced the model’s credit-building approach, which counsels individuals to use credit responsibly, had more positive impacts on credit outcomes than those that did not. The results also provide evidence that the characteristics of the communities the organizations served influenced outcomes. Communities’ racial composition was correlated with indicators of economic health, the presence of financial institutions, and credit availability, and the findings indicate that individuals in mixed race and majority-Hispanic communities were better able to access credit than those in majority-Black communities. This dissertation contributes to the policy and research literature in a number of ways. It uses a rigorous methodology to assess program effects, examines change in credit behavior and outcomes, assesses how implementation processes influence outcomes, and includes a broader segment of the low-income population than past studies, including those who lack credit histories. The findings provide evidence that low-income people of color face significant barriers to accessing mainstream forms of credit and suggest that policies are needed to increase consumers’ understanding of credit and access to credit at affordable rates and terms. The findings contribute to research and theory on the wealth accumulation process and can inform the work of policymakers and practitioners seeking to increase the financial well-being of low-income people of color.

This study examined the relationship between helping (organizational citizenship behaviours) and workplace safety. It is the second study in a sequence, building on an initial study by Burt and Williams (2012). The aims of the current study are three-fold. Firstly, further evidence was sought to support the argument put forth by Burt and Williams (2012) suggesting that there are situations in which helping behaviours can lead to an increase in safety risk. Additionally, based on findings from Burt and Williams (2012), the following two situations were investigated: I) why do helpers often not tell the target of help that help has been given; and, II) in the instance where help inadvertently leads to a safety risk increase for the target, why does the target fail to communicate this risk increase back to the helper. The personality traits of humility and agreeableness were hypothesised to positively relate to the first and second situations, respectively. The sample consisted of 79 participants across a variety of high risk occupations. Participants completed an anonymous questionnaire, containing measures of job risk, negative outcomes of helping behaviours, humility, agreeableness, single item measures to assess situation I and II, and subsequent measures to further investigate these two situations. The results showed clear evidence that helping can be associated with safety risks. Both of the personality-based hypotheses failed to reach significance. However, the results suggest that helpers often fail to tell the target of help that help has been given, through a lack of understanding regarding the importance of communicating one’s helping behaviours, and a lack of time or opportunity. Additionally, results suggest that the instance where help inadvertently leads to an increased safety risk for the target (but the target fails to inform the helper of this risk increase), occurs through the target wanting to protect the helper’s confidence, and not wishing to be seen as ungrateful. The results provide valuable information to significantly add to the limited literature regarding helping behaviours and occupational safety. The findings from this study potentially allow organizations to decrease the negative safety outcomes of such behaviours. Limitations and suggestions for future research are discussed.

This chapter investigates why people will help in some circumstances and fail to act in others. The brutal murder of Kitty Genovese in 1964 was witnessed by 37 witnesses, yet no one intervened, kick-starting research into understanding what elements of the social context causes paralysis in people to act. This is compared to a 2015 accident in London, which saw 50 bystanders lift a bus off a cyclist. The chapter unearths the rules of helping behavior and how to overcome the diffusion of responsibility. When the need for help is apparent, interpreted correctly, and responsibility to act is clear, the chances to overcome paralysis is high. Taking advantage of these rules is especially important for the gig economy, where the connections between people are more tenuous and diffused across organizations.

As a community, the foreign experts fitted somewhere between the diplomatic/correspondent communities and the long-term residents. Like Western diplomats and correspondents, they usually spent around two years in China. But they were a much more disparate group, going to the PRC through individual arrangements with the Chinese authorities, not as representatives of Western governments or media organizations—or even on official exchanges like most students. Like the long-termers, they worked in Chinese institutions, a few even in the same department or section, in an environment where foreigners were a tiny minority. They had the same formal conditions, though they were specifically recruited as foreign experts while the long-termers found themselves in this category largely by default. Unlike the long-term residents, though, they were always conscious that they were in China for only a few years.

Since December 2019, SARS-CoV-2 infections have altered many aspects of our societies. Citizens were faced with circumstances to which even experts and scientists did not yet know the answers and were applying the scientific method to make daily steps of progress towards better understanding the threat and how to contain it. Within a year, several vaccines were produced to protect individuals from the virus, thereby resolving the most important medical problem. However, not just medical issues call for the application of the scientific method. The management of epidemics also can, and in fact should, benefit significantly from a science-based approach. The novel complexity of the situation left us torn between permissive and authoritarian approaches of containment, and it is still subject to debate what works best and why. In our contribution, we model the emerging complexity of the epidemics and propose a scientific-based data driven approach that aims to aid the decision makers in their focus on the most relevant issues and thus helping them to make informed and consistent decisions. The resulting monitoring and control system, termed COVID-19 vigilance, helps with risk assessment and communication during regional COVID-19 outbreaks. The system is based on the Cynefin decision complexity framework and the universal process model, and it uses several mathematical models that describe epidemic spreading. Different future scenarios are used to predict the impact of realistic, optimistic, and pessimistic outcomes, in turn allowing for a more efficient communication of involved risk.

Aim/Purpose: [This Proceedings paper was revised and published in the 2018 issue of the Interdisciplinary Journal of Information, Knowledge, and Management, Volume 13] The main purpose of this paper is to identify ways of consumers’ knowledge sharing with business and public organizations. Background: Contemporary consumers do not wish to be passive consumers anymore. They want to satisfy their consumption needs by products’ evaluation, co-designing, co-creation and co-reconfiguration. They can do that by sharing their knowledge with enterprises and public organizations. Such consumers are named ‘prosumers’. Methodology: The research process included two stages. The first stage it was the survey among 388 prosumers. The second stage it was the online observation among 90 enterprises and public organizations. Contribution: This work contributes to extant research on utilizing consumers’ knowledge in business and public organizations by identifying and examining ways of consumers’ knowledge sharing with such organizations. Findings: It was found that there are differences between ways in which prosumers share knowledge with organizations and ways in which enterprises and public organizations engage them in knowledge sharing. Prosumers mainly share their knowledge with organizations by evaluating products, whereas organizations mainly engage prosumers in knowledge sharing by creating and designing products. In addition, enterprises more often engage prosumers in knowledge sharing than public organizations. Recommendations for Practitioners: This study provides practitioners with guidelines for prosumers’ knowledge utilization, especially helping them understand ways used by prosumers to knowledge sharing. Recommendation for Researchers: Researchers may build on the findings of the current study to conduct further research on using customer knowledge in organizations using different subjects and research contexts. Future Research: This study only examines Polish prosumer and organizations operating in the Polish market. It is advisable to extend the research to other countries and compare results.

Design projects within large engineering organizations involve numerous uncertainties that can lead to unacceptably high levels of risk. Practicing designers recognize the existence of risk and commonly are aware of events that raise risk levels. However, a disconnect exists between past project performance and current project execution that limits decision-making. This disconnect is primarily due to a lack of quantitative models that can be used for rational decision-making. Methods and tools used to make decisions in risk-informed design generally use an expected value approach. Research in the psychology domain has shown that decision-makers and stakeholders have domain-specific risk attitudes that often have variations between individuals and between companies. Risk methods used in engineering such as Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA), Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), and others are often ill-equipped to help stakeholders make decisions based upon risk-tolerant or risk-averse decision-making conditions. This paper focuses on the specific issue of helping stakeholders make decisions under risk-tolerant or risk-averse decision-making conditions and presents a novel method of translating engineering risk data from the domain of expected value into a domain corrected for risk attitude. This is done by using risk utility functions derived from the Engineering-Domain-Specific Risk-Taking (E-DOSPERT) test. This method allows decisions to be made based upon data that is risk attitude corrected. Further, the method uses an aspirational measure of risk attitude as opposed to existing lottery methods of generating utility functions that are based upon past performance. An illustrative test case using a simplified space mission designed in a collaborative design center environment is included. The method is shown to change risk-informed decisions in certain situations where a risk-tolerant or risk-averse decision-maker would likely choose differently than the dictates of the expected value approach.

As the nuclear industry continues to grow throughout the world, we find that support from government officials, local business leaders and the general public is becoming more and more important. In order to help raise awareness and inform these various publics, AREVA expanded upon a best practice from its worldwide operations and recently established a Community Advisory Council in the United States. The member organizations represent a variety of grassroots and minority organizations from across the United States and are active in various ways in local, state and federal arenas. AREVA’s objective for the Council is simple — listen to concerns, engage in dialogue and raise awareness about the intrinsic link existing between energy, CO2 emissions, global warming, and economic growth, so these same people can make decisions when it comes to energy sources in the future. We want our members to help us better understand their communities, listen to their concerns and answer their questions openly and honestly. AREVA understands that this outreach and education are just the first steps toward helping clean energy sources grow. We must maintain regular dialog and operate in a safe manner, because in the long run, it is these community members who will ensure energy security for the country. And it is only by working together as an industry that we can ensure a safe, clean air future for generations to come, no matter where in the world we live.

The purpose of this paper is to present the results of an end-of-project impact assessment (IA) of a Social Enterprise Development Center (SEDC) (created in Pakistan 7 years ago). The SEDC was created in 2000 to provide mainly training to non-government organizations (NGOs) and be a central recourse for their communication, resource sharing and support. The IA entailed the measurement of a large number of indicators spanning a wide range of stakeholder across various levels of impact chain: from individual to government. In this paper we present the results of the portal which was a central component of the project. A survey methodology approach was used and 280 members were asked to participate in a questionnaire online. Respondents to the survey indicated that they were somewhat satisfied with the achieved portal outcomes; in meeting their expectations; and that the components were favorable to their needs. However, they reported that they were not using the portal enough. Most participants agreed that the content is useful, clear, concise and accurate, but not (to a lesser extent perhaps) complete or current. Also, most agreed that the website interface is acceptable and readable with no complaints in terms of availabilities, loading speed, colors, organization, etc. Many expressed that the portal did not have adequate search facilities. Moreover, the data did not show any consensus among participants with regards to the portal helping them reach career objectives. The majority claimed that they access the portal mainly seeking to improve their skills, prepare for work related tasks and to get informed through latest news announcements.

Volunteering is very important to high school students because it not only allows the teens to apply the knowledge and skills they have acquired to real-life scenarios, but it also enables them to make an association between helping others and their own joy of fulfillment. Choosing the right volunteering opportunities to work on can influence how the teens interact with that cause and how well they can serve the community through their volunteering services. However, high school students who look for volunteer opportunities often do not have enough information about the opportunities around them, so they tend to take whatever opportunity that comes across. On the other hand, as organizations who look for volunteers usually lack effective ways to evaluate and select the volunteers that best fit the jobs, they will just take volunteers on a first-come, firstserve basis. Therefore, there is a need to build a platform that serves as a bridge to connect the volunteers and the organizations that offer volunteer opportunities. In this paper, we focus on creating an intelligent platform that can effectively evaluate volunteer performance and predict best-fit volunteer opportunities by using machine learning algorithms to study 1) the correlation between volunteer profiles (e.g. demographics, preferred jobs, talents, previous volunteering events, etc.) and predictive volunteer performance in specific events and 2) the correlation between volunteer profiles and future volunteer opportunities. Two highest-scoring machine learning algorithms are proposed to make predictions on volunteer performance and event recommendations. We demonstrate that the two highest-scoring algorithms are able to make the best prediction for each query. Alongside the practice with the algorithms, a mobile application, which can run on both iPhone and Android platforms is also created to provide a very convenient and effective way for the volunteers and event supervisors to plan and manage their volunteer activities. As a result of this research, volunteers and organizations that look for volunteers can both benefit from this data-driven platform for a more positive overall experience.

Abstract Since 2004, Brigham Young University has offered a graduate study abroad course in mechanical engineering to help prepare students to be leaders in globally-influenced product development organizations. The course is offered as a study abroad program where faculty lead a group of students across several countries to learn about global product development. This is accomplished in a 2–3 week time period consisting of visits to companies and universities as well as participation in cultural activities. While much research has been done on the benefits of study abroad, it remains unclear how effective study abroad programs are at helping engineering students, especially short-term study abroad programs. The purpose of this paper is to present and examine the benefits of a short-term, study abroad program to engineering students. Data was collected from students who have taken the Global Product Development Course over the past 15 years in a mixed methods survey. Trends show that technical and cultural visits positively effect engineering students in their perception of global product development. It is also shown that a short, 2–3 week, engineering study abroad program can be as or more effective than traditional study abroad programs in certain areas.
