Nano- and biotechnologies are the key elements of the complex of NBIC-technologies, developed within the concept of continuous growth of innovations in the context of the transition to the sixth technological mode. The purpose of the article is to study the prospects for the development of nano- and biotechnologies in various sectors of the economy, as well as explore opportunities for accelerating the commercialization of research results in these areas. The article’s relevance is confirmed by the strengthening of the role of nano- and biotechnologies in the sphere of innovation development of countries worldwide. The results of the study have shown that the nanotechnology market has a divergent structure, and the basic characteristic of nanoproducts is their interdisciplinary nature. The world leaders in the production and commercialization of nanotechnologies are the United States, China, Japan, Germany and South Korea. Biotechnologies are developing rapidly as well. Worldwide, the largest number of biotechnologies is created in areas such as health care (biomedicine and biopharmaceuticals), industry and agriculture. The leading countries in the field of development and commercialization of biotechnologies are the United States, France, Germany and South Korea.

Because of the depletion and deterioration of fossil sources of raw materials, adverse climate change in populations, pollution, environmental pollution and other factors, it is important to develop a bioeconomy based on its use of new resources of raw materials and technology for processing them. It is worth noting that the most important task for development of industrial biotechnology, the pharmaceutical industry and forest complex, bioenergy and other products has to provide new raw materials with the required properties. In many ways, the problem is resolved by creating fast-growing plant for different purposes obtained by biotechnological methods, and also to obtain non-traditional renewable raw materials (microalgae, biomass of cultivated cells from high plants, etc.). Another special place is occupied by technologies for the production and use of unicellular organisms (microalgae, yeast and bacterial producers), as well as technologies for the production and use of unicellular organisms (microalgae, yeast and bacterial producers), as well as plant transformants. Plant transformants and microclonal propagation are also used in this field.

Le développement des biotechnologies en santé a été inévitablement suivi du débat complexe relatif à la protection juridique qu’il convient de leur accorder. Le présent travail de recherche s’intéresse à la protection des innovations biotechnologiques en santé par le droit de la propriété industrielle et, plus particulièrement, sous l’angle de la Directive 98/44/CE du 6 juillet 1998 relative à la protection juridique des inventions biotechnologiques. L’hypothèse sur laquelle se fonde cette thèse est celle de la naissance d’un droit européen des biotechnologies appliquées à l’Homme, un droit original parce que glissant, évolutif, très labile, à l’instar du « vivant ». La notion de «biotechnologies » est en effet elle-même glissante et évolutive. Cette thèse propose une réflexion sur la place du droit des brevets dans le domaine des biotechnologies et sur l’adéquation de la Directive 98/44/CE à la protection de nouvelles inventions biotechnologiques en santé, telles les nouvelles techniques d’édition du génome, comme « CRISPR/Cas9 ». Les systèmes juridiques retenus dans cette étude en plus du droit de l’Union Européenne, sont les droits nationaux d’un certain nombre d’Etats membres (essentiellement la France et l’Italie, compte tenu de la formation juridique de l’auteure), ainsi que le droit des brevets d’invention aux Etats-Unis. The development of biotechnologies applied to health has inevitably be followed by a large debate regarding the legal protection that should be granted. This thesis addresses the legal protection of biotechnological inventions in the health sector under industrial property law and, in particular, from the legal perspective of Directive 98/44/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 6 July 1998 on the legal protection of biotechnological inventions. The main assumption of this thesis is the emergence of a European biotechnology law, an original area of law, slippery, changing and very labile, like the living. Similarly, the concept of “biotechnology” is itself slippery and evolving. This thesis provides a reflection on the place of patent law with respect to biotechnologies. It focuses on the adequacy of Directive 98/44/CE with regard to the legal protection of new biotechnological inventions applied to health, which includes CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing technology. The study focuses on European patent law and the national laws of some of the Member States (primarily, French law and Italian law, taking into account the legal background of the author). In addition, relevant comparisons with United States patent law have been conducted. Indeed, the United States are a leading market for biotechnology companies

Há um consenso de que a inovação em indústrias intensivas em conhecimento é um processo essencialmente coletivo. Especificamente na área de biotecnologias, a colaboração interinstitucional e interdisciplinar é um dos elementos que diversos autores têm identificado como um fator determinante para a inovação do setor. Estas têm se dado mediante articulação em redes. Assim, parcerias são determinantes para a competitividade das empresas que atuam neste segmento e a análise dessas redes constitui um passo importante para compreender sua dinâmica de inovação. Buscando elucidar o papel das colaborações na dinâmica de inovação na área de biotecnologias aplicadas à saúde humana, esta tese tem três objetivos principais: 1) descrever o papel das redes de P&D no processo inovativo do setor. 2) Analisar as redes científicas brasileiras de coautoria na área e 3) Discutir o processo de inovação e a evolução do mercado de medicamentos contra o câncer. É um esforço para trazer à saúde coletiva elementos teóricos e metodológicos capazes de ampliar o entendimento da dinâmica de inovação numa área de grande impacto social.

Le diagnostic in vitro (DIV) est un segment des biotechnologies de santé pour lequel les principaux acteurs se situent dans les pays développés. Parallèlement, le paysage actuel a contraint les compagnies multinationales à transformer leur modèle économique, tout en obligeant les pays non-occidentaux à devenir de nouveaux marchés et des lieux où de nouveaux savoirs et technologies pourraient être produits. Non seulement le Brésil est un marché important en ce qui concerne les produits de santé, mais il possède aussi une longue histoire en matière de fabrication de produits biologiques et pharmaceutiques. Dans ce contexte que les acteurs brésiliens se sont engagés dans production de DIV pour les maladies infectieuses. Ces initiatives articulent la santé publique et les politiques économiques industrielles, soit l’approche qui a été privilégiée dans le cadre du courant néo-développementaliste (neo-desenvolvimentismo) prôné de 2003 à 2016 dans ce pays. Cette thèse a pour objectif d’éclairer le travail des acteurs qui ont organisé la production et l’innovation de DIV dans un monde en mouvement, et dont le positionnement se situe au croisement de questions relevant de la santé publique, de l’autonomie technologique et de l’économie nationale brésilienne. Cette recherche se fonde sur un travail de terrain conduit entre 2014 et 2017, qui inclut des stages dans deux laboratoires rattachés à la fondation Oswaldo Cruz, ainsi que des entretiens avec de nombreux acteurs impliqués dans la production de ces tests diagnostics nationaux
In vitro diagnostics (IVD) is a segment of the health biotechnology industry for which the major players are situated in developed countries. At the same time, the contemporary landscape has compelled multinational companies to transform their business models and non-Western countries to become both new markets and places where new knowledge and technology can be produced. Not only is Brazil an important market for healthcare products, but it also has a long-standing history of producing pharmaceutical and biological innovations. It is in this context that Brazilian actors have engaged in the manufacturing of IVD for infectious diseases. These initiatives articulate public health and industrial economy policies, a preferred approach of the new developmentalism (neo-desenvolvimentismo) that prevailed in the country from 2003 to 2016. This thesis aims to shed light on how these actors organize IVD production and innovation in such a changing world, and at the crossroads of public health, technological autonomy and the national economy in Brazil. The research draws on fieldwork conducted between 2014 and 2017, which involved internships in two biotechnology laboratories linked to the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation, and on interviews with the various actors involved in the initiatives to produce national diagnostic tests

Caractérisation des propriétés mécaniques de la plaque d'athérome à partir de données échographiques endovasculaires : La technique de palpographie revisitée. Ce travail de thèse a pour ambitions de créer des outils issus de la théorie de la mécanique des milieux continus dans le but de détecter et de caractériser les propriétés mécaniques des plaques d'athéromes vulnérables. Une première partie du travail a consisté à reformuler et à corriger une approche de palpographie permettant de détecter rapidement la présence de corps lipidiques au sein de la paroi vasculaire pathologique. Cette nouvelle technique, qui estime la compliance vasculaire, a été validée avec succès sur des données simulées ainsi que sur des images IVUS de modèles d'artère réalisés en PVA-c. Notons que cette technique a été brevetée. Le développement des nouvelles modalités d'imagerie telles que l'OCT, l'IVUS-HD ne permettent pas de mesurer les déformations sur la totalité d'une section d'artère. En effet, pour de telles techniques d'imagerie, le signal ne pénètre pas toute la paroi artérielle, mais simplement la couche endoluminale (appelée aussi domaine de palpographie). C'est pourquoi, dans la deuxième partie de mon travail, j'ai proposé une nouvelle approche - s'inspirant de travaux déjà effectués au laboratoire - permettant de reconstruire la cartographie du module d'Young du domaine de palpographie. De nombreux algorithmes tentent de déterminer les géométries ainsi que les propriétés mécaniques des plaques d'athéromes. Cependant, il reste difficile de valider les codes de calculs car il est rare de disposer à la fois: des images IVUS, des coupes anatomiques et des mesures de rigidité des différents constituants de la plaque. Afin d'obtenir ces jeux complets de données, j'ai créé un banc expérimental permettant la réalisation de mesures IVUS, AFM et histologiques ex-vivo. Les deux dernières parties de ce travail mettent en avant le nombre important de résultats expérimentaux obtenus sur des artères réalisées en PVA-c ainsi que sur des aortes pathologiques et saines de lapins Watanabe. La validation de mes deux techniques précédentes de caractérisation ont été effectuées à l'aide de ce banc expérimental mis en place en collaboration avec l'université de Montréal.

L’évolution d’une économie industrielle vers une économie de la connaissance et du savoir a propulsé la propriété intellectuelle sur le devant de la scène. Désormais les droits intellectuels s’intègrent à tous les domaines de la vie moderne. De ce fait, le besoin de les protéger efficacement par des règles juridiques appropriées et d’inciter en conséquence les créateurs à produire de nouvelles créations est devenu une nécessité de premier ordre. Cependant, la spécificité de la nature de l’œuvre protégée par la propriété intellectuelle exige la prise en considération de multiples intérêts antagonistes. C’est pourquoi le législateur a cherché, au nom de l’intérêt général, à créer un juste équilibre interne entre les principaux intérêts présents au sein du régime de la propriété intellectuelle. Or, l’exercice des prérogatives octroyées par le régime de propriété intellectuelle effectué par le titulaire de droit a généré une importante expansion de ses intérêts au détriment des autres intérêts concurrents – présents dans la matière. Cette situation a provoqué, en conséquence, une rupture de l’équilibre interne de ce système, préétabli en amont par le législateur. Or, l’intérêt général peut jouer un rôle central dans le rétablissement d’un équilibre en la matière. Dans cette perspective, le juge peut, grâce à son pouvoir créateur de règles jurisprudentielles, se servir de l’intérêt général comme d’une ligne directrice servant à rétablir ce juste équilibre dans le système de la propriété intellectuelle. L’intérêt général justifie donc, tout autant que les limites intrinsèques aux droits de la propriété intellectuelle, les limites extrinsèques à ces droits
The evolution of the industrial economy towards the economy of knowledge has propelled intellectual property to the forefront. Intellectual property has become integrated in all the domains of the modern life. As a result, it has become a necessity to protect it effectively through appropriate legal rules that encourage creators to continue to provide new creations. However, the specificity of the nature of the work protected by intellectual property requires the consideration of multiple conflicting interests. As such, the legislator has sought, in the name of the general interest, to create a fair internal balance between the main interests present within the system of intellectual property rights. Nevertheless, the exercise of the prerogatives granted by the intellectual property system, carried out by the owner of intellectual property, has caused an important expansion of the interests of this owner, to the detriment of other concurrent interests. This has consequently caused a break in the internal balance of the system, instigated by the legislator. Nonetheless, the general interest can play a key role in restoring balance through the application of external rules to the intellectual property regime. In this perspective, the judge can, by using his creative power of jurisprudence, use the general interest as a guideline to restore balance in the intellectual property system. The general interest justifies thus, as well as the intrinsic limits to intellectual property rights, the extrinsic limits to these rights

L'analyse protéomique du tissu cérébral pathologique dans la maladie de Parkinson (MP) est un enjeu majeur à l'identification des causes moléculaires de la dégénérescence en vue de développer des thérapies curatives. Jusqu'à présent, les études chez l'humain se sont limitées à l'analyse du cerveau post-mortem, trop souvent représentatif d'un stade très avancé de la maladie et potentiellement altéré par différents facteurs. Dans ce travail, nous avons exploité l'accès temporaire au cerveau parkinsonien durant l'implantation d'électrodes de stimulation, pour obtenir une information moléculaire du tissu cérébral, in vivo et à un stade moins avancé de la maladie. Afin d'optimiser notre stratégie, nous avons ensuite développé un outil dédié à la capture tissulaire dont l'efficacité et le caractère non lésionnel ont été validés in vivo chez le primate. Ce travail permet d'envisager l'analyse protéomique du cerveau parkinsonien " vivant " afin d'identifier les causes moléculaires de la MP. En revanche, cette approche tissulaire n'est pas envisageable pour un diagnostic en routine clinique. Aussi, de nombreux groupes s'intéressent à l'analyse protéomique du LCR en vue d'identifier des marqueurs diagnostiques. Dans cette optique, nous avons mis au point une stratégie, basée sur l'utilisation de nanoparticules (NPs) fonctionnalisées qui a permis un enrichissement considérable des profils protéiques observés en spectrométrie de masse. La reproductibilité et la possibilité d'automatiser intégralement la préparation des échantillons font de notre approche une solution adaptée à la recherche de marqueurs moléculaires diagnostiques de la MP dans le LCR. Nous avons aussi démontré l'intérêt de notre approche pour l'analyse protéomique du plasma et du globule rouge. Enfin, nous avons évalué la possibilité d'utiliser ces NPs in vivo, pour une capture des protéines directement dans la circulation sanguine.

AbstractThis chapter examines the governance of health technologies during the COVID-19 pandemic and reflects on three interrelated challenges that need to be addressed in future assessment approaches for achieving systemic resilience: problems of scale, trust and politics. The chapter focuses on digital surveillance technologies and vaccines, two cornerstones in the efforts to mitigate the spread of SARS-CoV-2 around the globe. Tracing apps were introduced in many countries, but their effectiveness has been constrained by issues of data privacy, insufficient interoperability and digital inequalities. In parallel, a global research race enabled the development of different vaccines with unprecedented speed, building on innovative biotechnologies. However, vaccination worldwide was marked by disparities in access and controversy. We conclude that governance and assessment should be built around strong international coordination and cooperation, without limiting local experimental learning and innovation. Further, public trust should be considered as a necessary condition for the success of any technological innovation in the health context. As trust in policymakers, academia and industry is strongly context-specific, global governance should also be sensitive to the diversity of social and cultural contexts. Finally, to improve overall systemic resilience, global power imbalances should be addressed in all phases of the innovation process.

Health maintenance will be considered one of the major challenges for effective livestock production in the next decades. The demand of the world for food products from animals is estimated to increase by more than 70% by the end of 2050. To meet the increasing demand, such advanced methods and techniques are required, which have minimal effect on the environment. Over the last 10 years, the selection of genomics has been presented in various major livestock species. This selection has shown almost double the progress in genetics. Though, extra improvements in the field of genetics are required. The information on genomics with increased complexity (including epigenomic, genomic, microbiome data and transcriptomic) have been combined with the advanced biotechnologies for the purpose of a cost-effective method of collection and use, which will be then responsible for a most important contribution. Such technologies on implementation will permit genetic gains in the traditional traits of milk production along with low heritable traits, i.e., fertility and health.

In Algeria, the study of yeasts remained marginalized for a long time. One of the supposed causes would be the reduction of examples in the school system. In medicine, species are identified because of their pathogenicity. But in food production and other fields, yeasts are mentioned as quantification in the quality-control process as well as molds. In addition to homemade breads, traditions of fermentation involving yeasts are the process of other local products, such as dairy products, vinegars, beverages, and authentic cheeses. Yeasts affect fruits and plants but also increase yields and protect species from other pathogenic microorganisms. Some conscious researchers have looked into the prospecting of yeast showing their properties and evaluating their interest, adopting biotechnology approaches, and covering several environments. 131 taxa are listed in this first compilation with 27 species in human health, 30 in animal health, 27 from dairy products, 24 taxa isolated from soils, 41 from agricultural products, and 17 concerned environmental purposes. Biotechnologies concern 44 taxa in varied topics of biomass, ethanol, vinegar, enzymes, and esters. Sixteen selected natural products inhibit 14 yeast species. Many isolated strains are promising in agriculture, agri-food, and biotechnologies and present new economic prospects. The idea of national depository is proposed.

Sperm cryopreservation is one of the sublime biotechnologies for assisted reproduction. Post-thaw semen quality and values vary among animals of the same species. Similarly, there are species-specific variations in sperm morphology, i.e., sperm head, kinetic properties, plasma membrane integrity, and freezability. Similarly, the viability of sperm varies in the female reproductive tract, i.e., from a few hours (in cattle) to several days (in chicken). Various steps of sperm cryopreservation, i.e., male health examination, semen collection, dilution, semen centrifugation, pre- and post-thaw semen quality evaluation, lack standardized methodology, that result in differences in opinions. Assisted reproductive technologies (ART), including sperm preservation, are applied in mammalian species for management and economic reasons. This chapter aims to provide an update on sperm cryopreservation in farm animals including equine.

A health-saving biotechnology of a specialized product has been developed using the technology of obtaining carrot cells with the intestinal alkaline phosphatase genome, based on the cultivation of transformed carrot cells (somatic embioids) in suspension culture with further freezedrying. The probiotic product is intended for the correction and complex treatment of disorders of the intestinal microflora and the immune system, prevention of the development of autoimmune and inflammatory diseases. The mechanism of this action is to prevent the activity of LPS, NF – Kb, TLRY receptors and, as a consequence, the expression of anti-inflammatory cytokines. The data of the target segment and the volume of their production are presented. Recombinant human intestinal alkaline phosphatase (cSF) was obtained in vitro from carrot cells, which is the novelty and originality of technological solutions. In this case, the plant cell acts as an ideal means of delivering SF to the target cells of the intestine. At the same time, it is stable in the acidic environment of the stomach and is promptly destroyed in the intestine by microflora enzymes. The product has been tested on the basis of the biotech cluster of the Art Life company (Tomsk) according to the requirements of the 22,000 series and GMP standards, providing confidence in the stability of the specified quality and safety characteristics.

The European Union and its Member States have set themselves to achieve climate neutrality across the EU by 2050. The agricultural sector is one of the emitters of greenhouse gases (GHG). To achieve its climate neutrality goals of reducing the increase in global temperature to below 2�C and limiting it to 1.5�C, the EU has adopted the Green Deal and the Farm to Fork Strategy based on it. These goals create the need for the development and implementation of innovations. The agricultural sector will experience several innovative approaches in the future, including the digitalization of agriculture and the use of biotechnologies, including microbiological approaches. As a result, the agricultural industry will face significant changes in farming methods. In this article, the need for innovation in agriculture, the main microbiological factors that determine both soil health and yield levels are discussed and the principle by which the economic benefits of using innovative microbiological preparations in agriculture are calculated is shown. The use of microbiological preparations in agriculture can maintain crop yields and reduce GHG emissions.

Background. Obesity results from a malfunction of the body's weight-control mechanisms, which may be influenced by environmental changes. Essentially, the obesity risk relies on two significant interdependent factors: genetic variations (single-nucleotide polymorphisms, haplotypes) and environmental risk exposure. Due to new biotechnologies over 127 potential genes for obesity have been identified, and evidence supports the function of 22 genes in at least five distinct groups. Gene and environment interactions mean that the synergy between genotype and environment is neither additive or multiplicative. The application of innovative methods for both genotype and lifestyle variables should be emphasized. Aim of study: Investigate variable data of lifestyle factors in obese people with genetic predisposition and without in order to figure out the trigger risks which transform the predisposition into obesity. Material and methods: This is a descriptive study. A questionnaire was elaborated. It was developed based on the data of new biotechnological analysis of metabolic changes in obese humans. 142 individuals were included. 82 obese individuals, 42 with genetic predisposition and 40 without, and 60 healthy probands were interviewed. Further followed a comparative statistical analysis. Results: Obese probands were found with higher levels of disability compare those without, cardiovascular events higher compared with healthy probnads, disability level and smoking habits had significantly correlation in obese with genetic predisposition. On the other hand, health probands were found in higher level of anxiety compared obese people with genetic predisposition. Conclusions: All the lifestyle aspects which lead to an increased central nervous overactivity disturb significantly the metabolism and are critical risk factors for people with genetic predisposition relate to the pathogenesis of obesity. that might lead to high disability level associated comorbid states and high risk of cardiovascular events.

Stakeholder engagement is an important component in developing policies on critical issues such as the use and development of novel methods and technologies, including biotechnologies and nanotechnologies. Understanding the perspectives, needs, and concerns of stakeholder groups can facilitate the development of transparent and trusted policy recommendations. Innovative online research platforms have been developed as alternatives to typical stakeholder engagement methods such as in-person focus groups, interviews, and online and paper surveys. These platforms facilitate the engagement of geographically and linguistically (i.e., individuals who speak different languages) diverse stakeholders using a wide range of methods, from virtual focus groups to surveys. Stakeholders can participate at their own leisure and anonymously, which can facilitate more open interactions on issues where viewpoints may differ. In this work, we used an online stakeholder engagement platform (OSEP) to engage stakeholders and capture their perceptions and views about the application of nanotechnology in food and agriculture (nano-agrifood) and the role of responsible innovation in the development of nano-agrifood products. The OSEP provided a reliable and interactive environment for stakeholders to share their views and exchange ideas. Such OSEPs should be further explored as novel tools for engaging stakeholders on a range of issues from emerging technologies to public health.
