1987 hatte ich gerade promoviert und reiste zum ersten Mal nach Ghana. Schon am Flughafen in Düsseldorf gab es eine Begegnung, die in eine langjährige Freundschaft münden sollte. Im Bus zum Rollfeld kam ich mit einem in Deutschland lebenden Arzt aus Nordghana ins Gespräch. Er begrüßte mein Vorhaben, nicht nur den Süden, sondern auch den Norden des Landes kennenzulernen. Und er war nich im Mindesten erstaunt, als mich drei Wochen später - ohne dass wir unsere Namen und Adressen ausgetauscht hätten - ein Priester, mit dem ich in den Nordwesten des Landes fuhr, zu einem kurzen Besuch in seinem Haus in Tamale mitnahm. Dass ich zu den Dagara kommen würde - der Bevölkerungsgruppe, der er angehört, und bei der ich bis heute forschte -, sei ihm schon in Düsseldorf klar gewesen.

Die Darstellung Italiens in den Werken von Gregor von Rezzori ist Teil und Entwicklung einer langen literarischen Tradition, die bei Goethe, Platen, Hofmannsthal und Thomas Mann ihre Höhepunkte erreicht. Mit Gregor von Rezzori nimmt aber die Darstellung Italiens die Merkmale einer Klage auf sich. Diese Klage betrifft nicht nur Venedig oder Italien, sondern die gesamte abendländische Weltanschauung, und realisiert sich in der Form der Parodie. Das Italienbild der ersten Werke Rezzoris ist romantisch, fast exotisch und ganz unrealistisch. Es folgt, etwa in den siebziger Jahren, ein journalistisch skandalsüchtiges Bild, ein „deutsches“ Italien, in dem alle Gemeinplätze bewußt karikiert werden. Doch, die Liebe zum Land ist hier schon sehr klar spürbar. Erst im Büchlein Italien (1996) wird die Wende sichtbar. Die Liebe zum Land wird deutlicher ausgedrückt und ein echteres Bild Italiens kommt aus den Schriften dieser Zeit heraus, auf jedem Fall ein „italienischeres“, obwohl das ganze immer noch zwischen Gemeinplatz und journalistischer „Pseudo-Wahrheit“ schwebt. Diese Liebe findet besonders in dem Verhältnis zur italienischen Sprache Ausdruck. Italienisch war für Gregor von Rezzori die Sprache der Liebe und der Freundschaft, des täglichen Lebens, insbesondere die Sprache einer lichten und gleichzeitig tiefen Lebensweisheit. Obwohl es nicht die Sprache seiner Reflexionen und seiner Kunst war, spürte der Schriftsteller eine starke Anziehung zur italienischen Sprache, die ihn oft zwischen Scherz und Emst sagen ließ, seine Bücher seien auf italienisch schöner. Die Gefühle Rezzoris Italien entgegen sind unmittelbar mit seiner späteren Lebensweise in dem alten Haus in der Toskana verbunden. Es ist ein verinnerlichtes Italien, wohin der Autor immer wieder zurückkehrt und wo, trotz allem, noch die Zitronen blühen, und die Freundschaft dazu.

The paper investigates the structural response and vulnerability of timber log-haus walls under in-plane seismic loads. Careful consideration is given, in particular, to the structural efficiency of additional metal fasteners introduced within the thickness of traditional timber log-walls. Log-haus systems are in fact typically obtained by stacking multiple logs and generally used for residential or commercial buildings up to two levels. Their seismic characterization, however, still requires further investigations and studies, since current standards for timber structures (i.e., Eurocode 5 and Eurocode 8) do not provide specific recommendations for their seismic design. In this regard, the so-called “steel dovetail profiles” investigated in this paper are aimed to improve the in-plane stiffness and ultimate resistance of traditional log-walls. In particular, taking advantage of past experiments carried out on small-scale joint specimens, as well as past 3D numerical efforts for the same structural typology (unreinforced assemblies), full 3D solid models are described in ABAQUS to assess the potential of steel dovetail profiles, as well as to capture possible issues. Numerical simulations are proposed both for small-scale specimens and full log-haus assemblies, being representative of the actual loading and boundary conditions for log-haus walls as part of a real building. As such, the effects of key input parameters and main influencing aspects are emphasized. In conclusion, it is shown that the examined reinforcing technique can offer rather stable initial stiffness and ultimate resistance increase, compared to unreinforced assemblies. At the same time, several aspects should be taken into account to properly optimize their benefits.

Climate change is driving urban development policies for nearly all cities, which are responsible for over 40% carbon emissions in the world. UN SDG 11 (“Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable”) defines critical indicators focused on carbon footprint reduction through green policies and city heritage preservation. Urban regeneration should ensure climate comfort for citizens while enhancing legacy urban resilience. New solutions for urban regeneration such as Phase Change Materials (PCMs) provide inexpensive energy adaption solutions by reducing peak thermal loads, and their market share is growing yearly by 16% (OECD market trends). However, these materials must be integrated into recyclable flexible building elements to ensure tailored responses to different seasons and climates. Modular PCM elements working together with Passive Haus techniques have demonstrated their flexibility. This paper presents a new, efficient, and sustainable modular solution for PCM-based building envelope regeneration projects implemented jointly with Passive Haus strategies and Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) at street level. The efficiency of the proposed strategy is demonstrated though a simplified Digital Twin of the Benicalap neighbourhood in Valencia, Spain. The model simulates the climate evolution at the neighbourhood level, and can be used in any urban background to obtain a new carbon footprint which is then used as the main criterion for joint impact assessment of the proposed modular PCM-based building envelopes.

Recently, a mechanism of formation of light bullets (LBs) in wide-aperture passively mode-locked lasers was proposed. The conditions for existence and stability of these bullets, found in the long cavity limit, were studied theoretically under the mean field (MF) approximation using a Haus-type model equation. In this paper, we relax the MF approximation and study LB formation in a model of a wide-aperture three section laser with a long diffractive section and short absorber and gain sections. To this end, we derive a non-local delay-differential equation (NDDE) model and demonstrate by means of numerical simulations that this model supports stable LBs. We observe that the predictions about the regions of existence and stability of the LBs made previously using MF laser models agree well with the results obtained using the NDDE model. Moreover, we demonstrate that the general conclusions based upon the Haus model that regard the robustness of the LBs remain true in the NDDE model valid beyond the MF approximation, when the gain, losses and diffraction per cavity round trip are not small perturbations anymore. The exhibition, Postwar: Art between the Pacific and the Atlantic, 1945–1965 (2016-17), presented nearly 350 works by 218 artists from sixty-five countries, providing an ambitious and expansive account of mid-century modernism. Curated by Okwui Enwezor, Katy Siegel, and Ulrich Wilmes at Haus der Kunst in Munich, Postwar proposed a vision of artistic production in the post-World War II period that foregrounded experiences of war, decolonization, transnational movement, and changing technology. This review situates the show within a history of global exhibitions, articulating the stakes of the project for curatorial practice and pedagogy. It also evaluates its organization and display in the institution’s gallery spaces, reckoning with the limits of the exhibition format and the mode of decentering enacted through a simultaneous presentation of works created by artists in widely varying contexts.

In this paper, a representation based on digital assets and semantic annotations is established for Traditional Craft instances, in a way that captures their socio-historic context and preserves both their tangible and intangible Cultural Heritage dimensions. These meaningful and documented experiential presentations are delivered to the target audience through narratives that address a range of uses, including personalized storytelling, interactive Augmented Reality (AR), augmented physical artifacts, Mixed Reality (MR) exhibitions, and the Web. The provided engaging cultural experiences have the potential to have an impact on interest growth and tourism, which can support Traditional Craft communities and institutions. A secondary impact is the attraction of new apprentices through training and demonstrations that guarantee long-term preservation. The proposed approach is demonstrated in the context of textile manufacturing as practiced by the community of the Haus der Seidenkultur, a former silk factory that was turned into a museum where the traditional craft of Jacquard weaving is still practiced.

In the proposed work, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) is used as a surfactant for carbon nanotubes, to fabricate multi walled carbon nanotube-aluminium metal matrix composites (MMCs). This paper presents the comparison study of SDS coated and non-coated multi walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) mixed with Al6065 by stir casting technique. The presence of low molecular weight surfactant treated with MWCNT was investigated by Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy analysis. About 1 wt. % of MWCNT is used as a filler metal in Aluminium and the dispersion characteristics of SDS coated and non-coated Carbon Nanotubes in the composite is examined using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The comparison study of SEM analysis showed thatthe MWCNT coated with SDS has good dispersion stability and considerable reduction in agglomeration to obtain agglomeration free composites. The mechanical properties and wear characteristics of the MWCNT-Aluminium matrix were studied as per the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standards. The results of SDS coated MWCNT exhibits exceptional properties with increase in the tensile strength, compressive strength, hardness, and wear characteristics of the reinforced metal matrix. ABSTRAK:Natriumdodesilsulfat (SDS) digunakan sebagai surfaktan pada karbon nanotiub, bagi menghasilkan multi dinding karbon nanotiub-komposit matriks logam aluminium (MMCs). Perbandingan dibuat dalam kajian ini dengan membandingkan salutan SDS dengan bukan-salutan multi dinding karbon nanotiub (MWCNT) yang bercampur A16065 melalui teknik kacauan acuan. Kahadiran berat surfaktan molekul ringan terawat dengan MWCNT dikaji mengguna pakai analisis spektroskopi Penjelmaan Fourier Inframerah (FTIR). Kira-kira 1 wt.% MWCNT digunakan sebagai pengisi besi dalam Aluminum dan ciri-ciri penyebaran salutan SDS dan bukan-salutan karbon nanotiub dalam komposit diteliti menggunakan pengimbas mikroskop elektron (SEM). Perbandingan analisis SEM menunjukkan, salutan MWCNT dengan SDS mempunyai kestabilan penyebaran dan berkurang dengan banyak dalam pengaglomeratan bagi mendapatkan komposit bebas pengaglomeratan. Ciri-ciri mekanikal dan haus matrik Aluminium-MWCNT dikaji berdasarkan piawai Persatuan Pengujian Bahan Amerika (ASTM). Keputusan MWCNT salutan SDS mempunyai ciri-ciri luar biasa dengan kenaikan kekuatan tegangan, kekuatan mampatan, kekerasan, dan ciri-ciri haus pada kekuatan matrik logamn.

The high spectrum efficiency of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transmission traditionally depends on the high multiplexing gain in rich scattering environments, which will not always hold in the line-of-sight (LOS) environments, especially at higher microwave frequency band. In this paper, a novel antenna array design rule is proposed to guarantee full multiplexing gain for LOS-MIMO systems with one- or two-dimensional antenna arrays in LOS scenarios, and the strict perpendicular constraint is released in the two-dimensional case. The minimum antenna array area and the performance sensitivity to the area error are also obtained to guide the practical system design. Then, a demo MIMO-OFDM system with the designed square antenna array at 15 GHz carrier is implemented on a novel Gigabit Ethernet (GE) switch-based software defined radio (SDR) platform, which combines the hardware accelerating units (HAUs) with the general-purpose processors (GPPs). The field evaluation results show that the system throughput and spectrum efficiency are greater than 1 Gbps and 15 bps/Hz, respectively. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first time to demonstrate the Gbps LOS-MIMO-OFDM system at such microwave bands in the world, which can be a successful design example for the next generation wireless backhaul or fixed wireless access.

Babanin and Haus (2009) recently presented evidence of high levels of turbulence induced by steep non-breaking waves. They proposed a Reynolds-like threshold wave parameter (a2ω/ν=3000, a wave amplitude, ω wave angular frequency, ν water viscosity) for the spontaneous occurrence of turbulence beneath surface waves. This contradicts the common assumed basis of existing irrotational wave theories and their classical experimental validation. Many laboratory wave experiments were carried out in the early 1960’s (e.g. Wiegel, 1964). In those experiments no evidence of turbulence was reported and steep waves behaved as predicted by the high order irrotational wave theories within the accuracy of the theories and experimental techniques at the time. The spontaneous generation of turbulence under waves can have serious consequences for wave modelling, where the irrotational flow assumption has secured its place in engineering design. This contribution describes unique flow visualisation experiments for large scale steep non-breaking waves using conventional dye techniques in the wave boundary layer extending above the wave trough level. The measurements showed no evidence of turbulent mixing for waves up to a2ω/ν=7000. There is presently no evidence that water waves become spontaneously turbulent (up a2ω/ν=7000) except within the bed boundary layers, under wind forcing or at breaking. Excellent agreement was found with higher order irrotational theories. Orbital velocities, Stokes drift and Stokes coefficients were measured and compared with theoretical values, suggesting that conventional theories underestimate unforced monochromatic wave non-linearity, although the corrections remain small.

Optical phase conjugation of a linear pulse to compensate for the effects of even-order dispersion was first proposed by Yariv et al.1 and recently demonstrated.2 If a pulse is conjugated at the fiber midpoint, subsequent propagation reverses the effects of even-order dispersion. Recently, Forysiak and Doran3 showed that mid-point optical phase conjugation can be used in optical soliton transmission systems to compensate for soliton-soliton interactions and Gordon-Haus jitter.

Limitation of the transmission rate in optical soliton high bit rate (5 Gbits/s and higher) and ultralong (up to 10,000 km) information transmission systems is mainly due to soliton timing jitter, which is concerned with interaction of solitons with the spontaneous noise of optical amplifiers (Gordon-Haus effect)1 and electrostrictional soliton long-range interaction.2 The methods of the soliton timing jitter suppression were proposed.3,4 Similar problems arise when teraherz sequence of subpicosecond solitons have to be transmitted through long fibre of up to 100 km length. In this paper we propose the original method of the timing jitter suppression of subpicosecond solitons. The method is based on the soliton frequency stabilization due to the joint action of differential spectral amplification of soliton and Raman self-frequency shift.

A lot of possible applications of solitons for all-optical logic and high-bit rate transmission lines makes the problem of soliton interaction a very important aspect of the study of soliton propagation and amplification in optical fibers. In particular, soliton-soliton interaction limits bit rate of soliton communication systems and therefore reduction of soliton interaction is a very promising proposal. It was discussed recently by different authors that the interaction strength might be substantially reduced or fully suppressed by the bandwidth-limited gain [1-5]. At the same time, the bandwidth limited amplification is already being used in soliton communication systems for reduction of Gordon-Haus jitter [6,7] and noise suppression [8]. So, it is potentially possible to increase the bit rate by the simply changing the parameters of spectral filtering and small additional amplification. But the explanation of this effect is the subject of discussion. Different theories were proposed; however, there is no satisfactory approach to explain this effect for arbitrary soliton phases and to give a quantitative agreement with numerical simulations. Treating this problem as a very important one, here we present numerical results along with an analysis of IST eigenvalues and modified equation for soliton center.
