ABSTRACT: A notebook at the Huntington Library contains a previously unknown inventory of a house occupied by Josiah Hardy, the second-to-last royal governor of New Jersey, while in office (1761–63). The document, transcribed in this article, was drawn up by builder/architect John Edward Pryor—best known as the architect of Proprietary House in Perth Amboy, New Jersey—and Jonathan Brinner, a cabinet and chair maker. The transcription is supplemented by commentary on the people and places associated with the inventory, the ways in which the household goods listed in it were used, and the lifestyles of American colonial governors.

Maxwell Sater, “Hardy's Trees: Ecology and the Question of Knowledge in The Woodlanders” (pp. 92–115) This essay attends to one of the stranger episodes in Thomas Hardy’s fiction: the inexplicably linked deaths of John South and the elm tree outside his house. I argue that this subplot is of central importance to The Woodlanders (1887) and to Hardy’s ecological thinking more generally. Hardy posits an episode that resists narrative accommodation: simply, it does not make sense. Its senselessness, I contend, indexes a broader discomfort with, and rejection of, what Stanley Cavell would call relations of knowing as the foundation of ecology. By reading The Woodlanders alongside Cavell, I suggest that Hardy develops an ecological mode of relation dependent neither on knowledge of nor on continuity with nonhuman worlds but, rather, on a negotiation of the epistemological and ontological limits inhering between, in this instance, humans and trees. For Hardy, humane ecological relations are possible in spite of those limits; in fact, seeking to transcend them, as the elm tree plot parodically demonstrates, can be counterproductive.

Full of history and legends, the Melanau, one of the ethnic groups of Mukah, Sarawak, Borneo, went through a few periods of cultural assimilation. Three major areas: the Tellian Daya (Ulu), Tellian Puloh and Tellian Laut communities, are the main enclaves of these people with Tellian Puloh being the main hub. Their settlements along the river banks are in lowlands within the tidal zone. During the monsoon period (lian suluh), the tides combined with the flood water from the hills produce unpredsictable fluctuations of high and low water and flooding creating a saturated bog like quality. This paper aims to investigate the Melanau tall longhouse. Its construction was built in such tall heights due to the conditions of the soft soil. Often known to have been built up to 40 feet high, the house also provides protection for the people from floods as well as what used to be their enemies of other warring tribes. The materials used for the construction of the house came from the surrounding areas of sago leaves for the roof, sago tree trunk that had been sliced into planks for walls, nibong tree trunks for the floor and belian (Bornean iron wood) tree trunks for the main structural components of the house. All of these materials are known to be hardy and water resistance. Unfortunately, these traditional houses no longer exist with a few being abandoned and left to rot. Architectural documentation of this house is urgently needed to record the historical part of this culture. The investigation takes on qualitative method looking into the cultural influence onto the architecture. Survey, observation, architectural documentation and interviews with the Melanau cultural experts were undertaken. The finding pointed towards the establishment of the architectural language of the house based on the culture influence and functions of the spaces.

Abstract The aim of the paper is to analyse the idea of cooking/eating in two novels by Thomas Hardy: Jude the Obscure and Tess d’Urbervilles. Both works present the idea of food as one of the major points of reference in human relationships. One of the aspects worth analysing is eating as one of the most crucial primary needs. Another one is family eating. The meetings are preceded by careful preparation of meals (e.g. Sunday preparations in Arabella’s house or cooking in the house of the Crick family). The food often becomes the major topic during these meetings, showing in this way the idyllic character of family eating: the looks of dining rooms and kitchens are essential as well as the possibility of talking to each other while eating. This idyllic space of collective eating (according to M. Bakhtin) can be frequently destroyed by social conventions; when Tess was rejected by society, she used to eat alone and did not take care of what she eats. Both novels explore the idea of food making it important for the creation of an idyll.

The article deals with the short story by the English writer Thomas Hardy An Imaginative Woman (1894), which has not been translated into Russian. The author of the article analyzes this work from the point of view of genre features and classifies it as a piece of photoekphrastic prose. The argument in favor of this categorization is photographic ekphrasis, penetrating into such poetological levels of the story as plot-and-composition, character-related, spatiotemporal, narrative, motive-thematic. The perception of photography had a particular impact on the poetics of ekphrasis in the works of the Victorian era: it was not instantaneously perceived as a new and independent art form. Photo ekphrasis viewed through the prism of the Victorian times allows assuming its genre-forming function. It is not surprising that the mysticism of the photographic is reflected in photoekphrastic prose. According to the plot of the story, a photograph of a poet has an inexplicable impact on Ella Marchmill: looking at the photograph, she falls in love with him and commits adultery with him in her imagination and fantasies. After the suicide of the poet, whom she never met in reality, Ella dies. Having accidentally found the photograph in his house, the husband discovers some similarity between the child and the photographic portrait and kicks the child out of the house. The genre of Victorian short story, ‘open’ and developing, turned out to be the most organic form for photoekphrastic experiments. Thus, the functionality of photo ekphrasis in a short story is very versatile: it creates external and internal eventfulness in the story; reveals the psychology of the characters; serves as an impetus for expanding the historical and cultural context of the Victorian era; acts as a link between two worlds – the real and the ideal, built with the help of the imaginary; embodies the motives of ‘meeting’ and ‘recognizing’, as well as the theme of death and identity (personal, social) of the characters. The participation of photo ekphrasis in the organization of all levels of the artistic system of the story allows us to classify it as the genre ofphotoekphrastic short story.

Survey and excavations along the by-pass route were undertaken by the author for the Trust for Wessex Archaeology. The excavation at Flagstones House, directed together with Martin Trott, identified a late Neolithic causewayed enclosure. This note concentrates on the chalk engravings from that site, which lies to the west of Max Gate, the house of Thomas Hardy. It is perhaps apposite that the Wessex novelist built his home so close to the heart of a sacred Wessex site.

Surprise best seller fails to capture the triumph of azar nafisi's reading lolita in tehran (2003). This “memoir in books” recounting the cultural politics of postrevolutionary Iran—not exactly the subject matter that typically sends a book to the top of the literary charts—turned out to be “a bookseller's dream” (Burwell 143). It sold millions, was translated into thirty-two languages, and—perhaps most impressively—generated a critical lovefest that united neocon hawks like Bernard Lewis with progressive luminaries like Margaret Atwood. Far less surprising, however, was the familiar canard of “Oriental darkness” dominating the book's mainstream reception: the idea that non-Westerners have no literature of their own and know nothing about the Western canon. Many commentators refused to consider the radical possibility that Iranians may have already been acquainted with some canonical occidental texts. Nowhere to be found in this discussion was the name Ibrahim Younisi (1926-2012), whose fifty-year career in literary translation underscores that Iranians have long been avid readers and enthusiastic translators of world literature. Sadly, this ignorance is not limited to mainstream literary publications; John O. Jordan and Nirshan Perera's Global Dickens fails to mention that Charles Dickens's works have been in widespread circulation in Iran since the 1960s. Decades before Nafisi supposedly led her students to Western literary civilization, Younisi had translated not just Dickens but also Thomas Hardy, Henry Fielding, Shakespeare, and George Eliot. By the time of his death, Younisi's résumé included more than seventy translations, encompassing literary texts, criticism, memoir, and historical scholarship.

Extending the season can provide opportunities for vegetable producers. Bunching onion, or scallions (Allium fistulosum L.), is a crop that can be a candidate for protected production used to extend the growing season. The cvs. Evergreen Hardy White (white), Deep Purple (red), and Nabechan F1 (white) were sown at monthly intervals from Sept. 2010 to Aug. 2011 in containers under greenhouse and hoop house conditions at Lane, OK. Days to harvest and yield variables were determined. Crop failure occurred in a greenhouse for all plants sown in July, for ‘Deep Purple’ sown in August, and for those sown in a hoop house in February and March and May through August, days to harvest was generally less for plants sown in the greenhouse, and for ‘Deep Purple’, but all plants took longer to reach marketable size than is indicated for field production. Yields for plants grown in the greenhouse were higher than for those grown in the hoop house. Greenhouse production provides more flexibility and protection from environmental conditions so that bunching onions can be grown for extended season production. However, environmental controls under greenhouse conditions need to be refined to reduce length of growing season while maintaining, or improving, yields of optimally sized plants. Programs to improve nutrition in school systems and introduction of “Farm to School” and “extended season” initiatives present opportunities for production of some vegetables including bunching onion, or scallions. “Farm to School” programs allow the use of fresh, locally grown foods to be incorporated into school menus. Bunching onions can be used fresh or prepared items. Use of protected culture in greenhouses and hoop houses may allow for extended season production of these onions so that they can be used during non-typical growing periods especially, when locally produced field-grown crops are not available.

The Angel in the House: An Unstable Icon examines the ways in which the figure named in Coventry Patmore's series of mid-nineteenth century poems provoked an anxiety that manifests itself consistently in British literature throughout the nineteenth and into the twentieth century, where the family beacon, the one whose raison d'être was to guide her husband and children away from the immorality rife in the public sphere, instead actively interfered with the good instincts of her offspring, substituted her own wishes for theirs, and caused irreparable harm in the process. This dissertation analyzes the ways in which mother figures in mid-century novels interrogate the angel-mother in particular and suggest the destructive capability inherent in that figure. It argues that the literary questioning of the ideal supports what Poovey calls "uneven development" in the construction of a gender model. The Angel in the House: An Unstable Icon will demonstrate that at the hands of Thomas Hardy and Henry James in particular, the mother is reimagined into a figure bearing little resemblance to the Angel mother, except in her inheritance of a belief that the mother must remain her child's guide, despite the inclinations of their adult children toward a new autonomy. While the Victorian consciousness seems to have experienced a splitting--women were either good or bad, mothers were either good or bad--Hardy and James resist such splitting, instead exploring the gaps and flaws in the Angel-in-the-House ideology, in the process establishing the prototype for mother figures who little resemble Angels, in other words, fully human mothers, that both British and American Modernists such as D. H. Lawrence, William Faulkner, and Virginia Woolf would adapt as central figures in their major works.

The literature suggests that there is an existing mismatch between service providers that supply housing and the needs of the most vulnerable and marginalized homeless population, the “hard to house”. This specific population faces complex problematic characteristics like substance use, physical and mental health concerns, particular behaviours (e.g. collecting, aggressiveness), visual appearance, lack of social skills, childhood trauma, working in the sex trade, and so on which leaves them in a constant state of absolute or relative homelessness. To gain a better understanding of their needs, the meaning and creation of home for this population is the focus of this research project. The two main research questions are: What is the meaning of home for those labelled "hard to house"? And how is it created? To answer these questions eight residents at a housing project within Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside have been interviewed, using a naturalistic qualitative research approach. Three emergent themes have been identified: 1) self care, 2) divided neighbourhood, and 3) young adulthood. The themes are discussed by applying Vaclav Havel’s definition of home and integrating Erving Goffman’s theory on interaction rituals, exclusively focusing on two essays “On Face Work” and “The Nature of Deference and Demeanor”.

This essay explores the hierarchy amongst the characters in J.K Rowling’s Harry Potter novels with a theoretical focus on Critical Race Theory. The representation of the house-elves will be examined in relation to racism and slavery, which will be compared to values that have been influential in the past and that still shape society today. The result reveals that racism and slavery is presented throughout the novels and has a distinct connection with the British Empire as well as with Great Britain today. Counter narratives exhibit a new truth that is unveiled through the stories of the house-elves and create better understanding regarding discrimination. A pedagogical analysis has in addition been conducted on the novels to enhance the counter narratives through empathy. The student will with the novels, receive different perspectives that can help them to develop their empathic abilities.

Evidence based on content is one of the key sources of validity evidence described in the Standards for Educational and Psychological Testing. This dissertation used three groups of content experts to gather validity evidence based on content for two sections of the Quality of Life for Homeless and Hard-to-House Individuals (QoLHHI) Survey. One goal of this dissertation was to examine the implications of this evidence for the validity of inferences made from the QoLHHI, while a second goal was to determine if judgmental studies using content experts, a popular method for content validation, can be improved. Quantitative and descriptive validity evidence was collected from 11 subject matter experts (researchers working with individuals who are homeless and vulnerably housed (HVH)), 16 experiential experts (individuals who were HVH), and 8 practical experts (individuals who had administered the QoLHHI). These experts independently rated the relevance and technical quality of the items, response scales, administration instructions and other content elements of the QoLHHI. Content Validity Indices were computed and used to identify elements that were endorsed by the experts. Experts also provided descriptive feedback in the form of comments and suggestions for improving the QoLHHI content. This feedback was used to develop recommendations for revising the content. In terms of evidence based on content for the QoLHHI, over 85% of the content elements were endorsed, indicating good evidence for validity. The recommended revisions are relatively straightforward to implement. Overall, the content of these two sections of the QoLHHI appears likely to produce scores that lead to supportable and appropriate inferences. With regards to methodology, a new approach to content validation is proposed. Traditionally, content validation studies have focused on quantitative assessments, with descriptive data being given a secondary role. It is proposed here that content experts should be viewed as an advisory board rather than a representative sample of a larger population, that members’ feedback should be given individual attention, and that judgmental studies should focus primarily on the experts’ descriptive feedback, which is where their knowledge, experience, and insight are best expressed.

Annotation:
The worlds of Dickens's novels and of Darwin's science reveal striking similarity in spite of their involvement in different areas. The similarity comes from the fact that they shared the ethos of Victorian society: laissez-faire capitalism. In The Origin of Species, which was published on 1859, Charles Darwin theorizes that nature has evolved through the rules of natural selection, survival of the fittest, and the struggle for existence. Although his conclusion comes from the scientific evidence that was acquired from his five-year voyage, it is clear that Dawinian nature is reflected in cruel Victorian capitalism. Three novels of Charles Dickens which were published around 1859, Bleak House, Hard Times, and Our Mutual Friend, share Darwinian aspects in their fictional worlds. In Bleak House, the central image, the Court of Chancery as the background of the novel, resembles Darwinian nature which is anti-Platonic in essence. The characters in Hard Times are divided into two groups: the winners and the losers in the arena of survival. The winners survive in Coketown, and the losers disappear from the city. The rules controlling the fates of Coketown people are the same as the rules of Darwinian nature. Our Mutual Friend can be interpreted as a matter of money. In the novel, everything is connected with money, and the relationship among people is predation to get money. Money is the central metaphor of the novel and around the money, the characters kill and are killed like the nature of Darwin in which animals kill each other. When a dominant ideology of a particular period permeates ingredients of the society, nobody can escape the controlling power of the ideology. Darwin and Dickens, although they worked in different areas, give evidence that their works are products of the ethos of Victorian England.

It is now broadly accepted that Vaughan Williams's music betrays a more complex relation to national influences than has traditionally been assumed. It is argued in this thesis that despite the trends towards revisionism that have characterized recent work, Vaughan Williams's interest in and engagement with English folk materials and cultures remains only partially understood. Offering contextual interpretation of materials newly available in the field, my work takes as its point of departure the critical neglect surrounding Vaughan Williams's contradictory compositional debut, in which he denounced the value of folk song in English art music in an article published alongside his song 'Linden Lea', subtitled 'A Dorset Folk Song'. Reconstructing the under-documented years of the composer's early career, it is demonstrated that Vaughan Williams's subsequent 'conversion' and lifelong attachment to folk song emerged as part of a broader concern with the intelligible and participatory quality of song and its performance by the human voice. As such, it is argued that the ways in which this composer theorized an idea of 'song' illuminate a powerful perspective from which to re-consider the propositions of his project for a national music. Locating Vaughan Williams's writings within contemporaneous cultural ideas and practices surrounding 'song', 'voice', and 'Englishness', this work brings such contexts into dialogue with readings of various of the composer's works, composed both before and after the First World War. It is demonstrated in this way that the rehabilitation of Vaughan Williams's music and reputation profitably proceeds by reconstructing a complex dialogue between his writings; between various cultural ideas and practices of English music; between the reception of his works by contemporaneous critics; and crucially, by considering the propositions of his music as explored through analysis. Ultimately, this thesis contends that Vaughan Williams's music often betrays a complex and self-conscious performance of cultural ideas of national identity, negotiating an optimistic or otherwise ambivalent relationship to an English musical tradition that is constructed and referenced through a particular idea of song.

The Downtown Eastside of Vancouver is one of the city’s oldest neighbourhoods and one of Canada’s poorest. Once home to city hall and a bustling entertainment district, this neighbourhood has slowly been overtaken by an open drug market. With many individuals in this area without permanent residence, temporary shelters have become a refuge for the homeless. As a response to the need for permanent housing in this area, this thesis explores the role of architecture in housing the homeless, specifically those who suffer from drug addiction. Building on precedents of mixed use affordable housing programs in Canada and the U.S., this project focuses on ways of facilitating services and activities that seek to improve the quality of life for the disenfranchised.

City as a man creation is always experiencing transformation from time to time. The city center area, originating from a residence area has turned into a commercial area for trading. This transformation is recognized by the physical building change. This paper will describe building transformation in the Pasar Baru area, which is a conservation area in the city center of Bandung city, Indonesia. Colonialism left dualism of the land status in this area, formal and informal. Formal land is located on the road side shaped as row shop houses whilst the informal land lies behind the shop houses in form of urban kampong. The improvement of business and trading, demands a larger working area so space expansion is needed. The difference of land status and location makes it possible for shop house owners to expand their lot toward the kampong behind. Nowadays old shop houses as conservation buildings are hard to recognize because they have been transformed into new shop house forms. By observing the shape it’s expected that the lot expansion was the motivating factor. How did the transformation occur? Can transformation on one land lot give contribution to transformation on the city? It’s expected that the occurring transformation should not eliminate the conservation, building and area in the city center and the residential function could still be maintained.

“I remembered him, with a thick gray beard and several layers of clothes standing by the bus stop when it was freezing outside. I used to stop and pick him up in my toasty car, open up the trunk with a push of a button so he could shove his heavy duffle bag, he often sit in the back seat saying basically … nothing. I tried several times to initiate conversations with him. But when he talked – hardly ever – he said jewels of wisdom. Library workers knew him as an avid reader who spent time at the library nearly every day. Teddy Henderson or Abdul-Shahid passed away on October 6,2008; he was 62. He was born in Brooklyn,N.Y., in 1946. He graduated from high school and attended Hampton University in Virginia. In 1968, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and was stationed in Washington, D.C. The story of Abdul-Shahid is not much different than the story of thousands of homeless Americans who left us perplexed with mystery.

Successive house building booms from the late 19th century until the Second World War shaped London’s built environment decisively. In terms of the sheer size of area covered, the dispersed, suburban London of terraced, semi- and detached houses that we know today was to a large extent created then, and much of it was built speculatively - by private firms for an assumed demand. Despite this legacy, the questions of who those involved in the design were and how they did it is an under-researched topic surrounded by assumptions that are often difficult to substantiate. Speculative housing of the period has long been regarded as an example of vernacular architecture, made by craftsmen using standard templates, so-called pattern books, without architect’s or otherwise professional involvement. The idea – in its extreme, ‘ultra’ form - is that designers were hardly necessary, as builders could simply copy house designs found in popular books and build from these. This idea of house building without architects or designers is also reflected in some of the literature but has been questioned more recently in academic research. This paper will discuss the key occupations involved in the design and planning of speculative housing 1880s – 1939 through a survey of Building Applications for Richmond. These can only be understood in the context of its working world where boundaries between building and design roles were often less specialized than today. The evidence suggests that housing design was not as standardised as it appears, by simply reusing templates, but that much of it was in fact designed, usually for a number of dwellings at a time - by builders, architects and also by other professionals. These were the other ‘architects’ who made the London we know today.

Annotation:
Despite the wealth of publications on Harry Seidler’s life and works, some aspects of the architect’s career remain relatively unknown or under-appreciated. This paper points the architect’s contribution to urban design through lesser-known high-rise projects designed for the inner city of Melbourne. The chronicle of Seidler’s jobs in Melbourne speaks more of an unsuccessful office unable to convert major prospects into realised outcomes than of the commercial projects and landmarks for which his work is widely acclaimed. Over 40 years, Seidler conceived several high- rise projects for Melbourne’s Central Business District, but apart from the notable exception of the heritage-listed Shell House, those projects remained unbuilt. At the core of Seidler’s scarce professional success in the second-largest Australian city, there was a problematic relationship that developed with local culture and city planning authorities. Seidler’s conflict with Melbourne erupted on the occasion of the planning approval of Shell House, surging in contrast to the rise of an overreaching and somewhat still pervasive post-modern urban design culture in the Victorian city.

Abstract In our daily life, we live by using many resources such as electricity and gas energy, metal products such as automobiles. When imported iron ore or coal from overseas is transported by a conveyor, it drops from the conveyor due to vibration and strong wind during transportation. At present, people are doing cleaning directly using a vacuum car in the place where the track loader cannot enter. When a person performs cleaning work using a vacuum car, accidents such as getting caught in the mouth of a hose or a conveyor might. To cope with this problem, a vacuum robot that performs cleaning work on behalf of people are developed in previous work. However, since the hose for sucking iron ore and coal is hard, these robots cannot move freely. In this research, we developed a vacuum cleaning robot that can transport a hard and heavy hose with a small and light weighted robot. The developed vacuum cleaning robot independently controls the driving part and the suction part, whereby the robot can control the position of the suction port while suppressing the repulsive force of the hose.

Iran is an ancient country with an old civilization. Most parts of this country have been located in hot and dry region. Many cities of Iran suffer from harsh climate and water scarcity both. But we notice a rich urban planning and architecture in these cities which were adapted with this hard situation. We can survey this adaptation in many aspects of traditional urban planning and architecture in Iran. They could build some building with a good energy saving and prepared some spaces with suitable condition for living. Desert has a harsh climate with hot days and cold nights but Iranians build their houses in such a way to keep warm temperature during nights in their walls and then it had cold walls in days to reduce the temperature of the rooms. Besides they divided their homes to two parts, one part for winter and the second for summer. In summer part they used wind tower to catch and bring the wind into rooms. These houses had central yards which contained pool and plants to reduce the temperature of hot days as well. Briefly, there is a special climatic design in traditional houses of hot cities of Iran. Urban planning of these cities respected some features to reduce the effect hot climate as well. For example, there was a dense urban fabric in these cities with narrow lanes. Also, they could achieve the problem of limitation of water by some intellectual technology which called Qanat. Locating of most of the urban elements of cities obeyed from these Qanats. This Qanat provided drinkable water of city and citizens used water by some traditional hydraulic structures such as water reservoir or baths or ice house and so on. Nowadays sustainable design in architecture and urban planning is an important and essential paradigm. This paradigm emphasized on adapting with nature instead destroying it. Traditional architecture and urban planning of these Iranian cities of hot and dry climate contains a lot of features which can be useful for urban development of future hot cities which will be developed by sustainable urban planning paradigm. This paper reviews some features in traditional urban planning and architecture as some useful lessons for recent and future hot cities. Indeed, there are some aspects in these cities which can lead us a more sustainability in urban planning specially for hot cities.

Although the risks and rewards of outsourcing product design have been argued extensively in the literature, little hard data on project outcomes exist to inform the discussion, and even these are methodologically suspect. To address this gap, this paper uses novel random sampling techniques to locate projects and measure the distribution of project outcomes in one particular type of design outsourcing, domestic design consulting. The results suggest that design consulting outcomes are generally good but vary significantly between projects and consultancies. Overall rates of product commercialization and market success compare favorably to results previously reported for in-house product design, and client satisfaction levels are comparable to those of other service industries.

In this paper an experimental study is reported to reduce the rotating inertia in a 2½″ HDD by replacing thick hard disk platters with thin, CP (commercially pure) titanium substrates in the range of 25 microns to 152 microns in thickness. The results of this work can be extended to other disk form factors [1]. The low inertia and thinness of the titanium foil platter can be exploited to allow disk drive products to be powered on/off rapidly, decreasing energy consumption. In addition, significantly faster rpms and data thru-put can be achieved. Also, many more disk platters can be housed in each unit, increasing storage capacity; while slimmer products that operate with low voltage battery power can be developed.

Annotation:
Two-dimensional flow around a circular cylinder forced to follow an elliptical path at low Reynolds numbers is investigated numerically using a thoroughly tested in-house code based on the finite difference method. Time-mean (TM) and rms values of lift, drag and base pressure coefficients are investigated within the lock-in region against the transverse oscillation amplitude for Reynolds number Re = 150 at frequency ratios of 0.8, 0.9 and 1.0 while the ratio of in-line and transverse cylinder oscillation amplitudes is kept at six different values yielding slender elliptical cylinder paths. The objective of the paper is to investigate the effect of the shape of the path, or amplitude ratio, on force coefficients. Findings show that for the cases investigated the rms of lift and TM of drag and base pressure are hardly affected by the amplitude ratio, while its effects are pronounced on the TM of lift and rms of drag and base pressure.
