Telephone handset design has evolved for decades along with advancements in technology and manufacturing methods. Today, a handset could be reduced to a slim rod incorporating a miniaturized earpiece and microphone. However, most handsets look like the venerable K-type handset, such as those found today on many household and business telephones. Should future handsets continue to follow suit, or are there significant opportunities for improvement? Initially, we conducted five focus groups to answer this question. To begin each session, we photographed consumers holding handsets to assess gripping styles. Then, consumers rank ordered six conventionally designed handsets and six progressively designed handsets according to several ergonomic and emotional attributes. They also critiqued the handset designs according to personal preference and built clay models of their ideal handset. Based on this input, our team of human factors and industrial design specialists designed 6 new concepts, then obtained quantitative and qualitative feedback by conducting thirty focus groups in three metropolitan areas. This follow-on research, that included free association, sample handset assessment and, paired comparison and ranking exercises, identified significant opportunities to improve handset comfort, appearance, and emotional appeal. A Kruskall-Wallace H-test showed few significant differences in consumer preferences among 18 sample handsets. Our results indicate that users prefer a handset that can be shouldered, looks modern, feels good in the hand, and conforms to the face. We found that users are receptive to design innovation, but only if there is an ergonomic payoff. We include a discussion of detailed design recommendations in the last two sections.

INTRODUCTION Patients undergoing colorectal surgical resections have a high incidence of surgical site infection (SSI). Many patient-specific risk factors have been recognised in association with SSI in such patients, but environmental contamination is increasingly recognised as a contributor to hospital-acquired infection (HAI). This study set out to describe the bacterial contamination of the patient environment, using hospital bed-control handsets, as they are frequently handled by both staff and patients and represent a marker of environmental contamination. PATIENTS AND METHODS On two unannounced sampling events, 1 week apart, 140 bacteriological assessments were made of 70 hospital bed control handsets within a specialist colorectal surgical unit. RESULTS Of the handsets examined, 67 (95.7%) demonstrated at least one bacterial species (52.9% grew 1, 30% grew 2 and 12.9% grew 3 or more bacterial species). Of these, 29 (41.4%) bed-control handsets grew bacteria known to cause nosocomial infection, including 22 (31.4%) handsets which grew Enterococcus spp., 9 (12.9%) which grew MRSA, 2 (2.9%) which grew MSSA, 2 (2.9%) which grew coliforms, and 1 (1.4%) handset which grew anaerobes. At 1-week follow-up, 31 bed-control handsets showed evidence of contamination by the same bacterial species. CONCLUSIONS This study revealed high levels of bacteria known to cause HAI, contaminating hospital bed-control handsets in a surgical setting. Further study is now required to confirm whether hospital environmental contamination is causally involved in SSI.

The aim of this paper is to analyze the determining factors for the pricing of handsets sold with service plans, using the hedonic price method. This was undertaken by building a database comprising 48 handset models, under nine different service plans, over a period of 53 weeks in 2008, and resulted in 27 different attributes and a total number of nearly 300,000 data registers. The results suggest that the value of monthly subscriptions and calling minutes are important to explain the prices of handsets. Furthermore, both the physical volume and number of megapixels of a camera had an effect on the prices. The bigger the handset, the cheaper it becomes, and the more megapixels a camera phone has, the more expensive it becomes. Additionally, it was found that in 2008 Brazilian phone companies were subsidizing enabled data connection handsets.

Recently considerable attention has been paid to hand tool design which has been caused by a near epidemic level of cases of carpal tunnel syndrome, tendonitis, tenosynovitis, and de Quervain's disease. Workers who use knives in meat packing are particularly susceptible to these occupational diseases. Five brands of meat packing knives with plastic handles were tested using a battery of 11 tests. These tests evaluated force capabilities using each of the knives. In addition, a standard cylindrical handle was tested as a control. The results indicated that the different handles performed differently depending upon the cutting orientation. This indicates that one handle cannot be chosen for all meat packing jobs. One handle, however, when evaluated using the ranks on all 11 tests is shown to be superior to the others tested.

The power density of portable electronic devices continues to increase because packaging advances reduce their size even as features are added and enhanced. Designing thermal management systems to accommodate steady-state conditions as opposed to fixed duty cycles can substantially increase cost, size, and weight. The feasibility of transient thermal management of handsets using phase change materials (PCMs) was experimentally investigated using an ABS handset mock-up. At selected intervals of time, the nonuniform case temperature of the handset was measured using an infrared (IR) camera, while thermocouples measured the temperatures of the PCM and simulated power amplifier (heater). Transient and steady-state heat transfer rates by natural convective and radiation from the handset to the environment were numerically computed from the temperature data in the thermal images. The effects of PCM material, power supplied to the handset, and handset orientation on the time required for the handset case to reach a given (maximum) temperature and “recovery” time were examined.

This paper presents a novel cellular handset design with a bottom-mounted short loaded-whip antenna. This new handset design is modeled and simulated using a finite difference time-domain (FDTD)-based platformSEMCAD. The proposed handset is based on a current commercially available bar-phone type with a curvature shape, keypad positioned above the screen, and top-mounted antenna. The specific absorption rates (SARs) are determined computationally in the specific anthropomorphic mannequin (SAM) and anatomically correct model of a human head when exposed to the EM-field radiation of the proposed cellular handset and the handset with top-mounted antenna. The two cellular handsets are simulated to operate at both GSM standards, 900 MHz as well as 1800 MHz, having different antenna dimensions and intput power of 0.6 W and 0.125 W, respectively. The proposed human hand holding the two handset models is a semirealistic hand model consists of three tissues: skin, muscle, and bone. The simulations are conducted with handset positions based on the IEEE standard 1528-2003. The results show that the proposed handset has a significant improvement of antenna efficiency when it is hand-held close to head, as compared with the handset of top-mounted antenna. Also, the results show that a significant reduction of the induced SAR in the human head-tissues can be achieved with the proposed handset.

This paper is intended to investigate intensely the impact of multipossible hand-hold positions on the electromagnetic (EM) interaction of handset antennas and a human by using a finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. Candy-bar handsets with different external and internal antenna positions operating in the GSM900, GSM1800/DCS, and UMTS/IMT-2000 bands are hereby simulated with configuration of the most parts in order to achieve the commercially available handset model design. Homogeneous and heterogeneous phantoms both are used to simulate the human head, whereas, a semirealistic model with three different tissues is designed to simulate a human hand holding a set. Both of the antenna performance including the total isotropic sensitivity (TIS) and the specific absorption rate (SAR) in tissues are examined for the different suggested applicable cases, where various positions of antenna, handset and hand are considered in simulations. This simulation study determines that both of the antenna performance and the SAR in tissues significantly alter owing to the positioning of the handset against user's head at different hand levels; where a maximum alteration is observed due to the exposure of handset with internal antenna, as compared with the handset having external antenna.

Dog-handler relationships can directly impact team success. Changing a dog’s handler may therefore compromise detection performance. However, there are currently few studies which support this. This research explored the performance and behavioural impact of changing a dog’s handler. Nine dogs trained at scent detection were accuracy tested with a familiar and unfamiliar handler. Both handlers were female with similar dog handling experience. The dogs were tested along brick lines containing target, non-target, and control samples. Testing was separated into four sessions, with each session having 36 samples. The dogs’ accuracy scores were then calculated and testing footage behaviour coded. The dogs had significantly higher sensitivity (p = 0.045) and negative predictive value (NPV) (p = 0.041) scores when handled by the familiar handler. With the unfamiliar handler the dogs performed more stress-related behaviours, and were distracted for a higher proportion of time (p = 0.012). Time spent distracted was negatively correlated to detection performance (correlation = −0.923, p < 0.001). With the unfamiliar handler the dogs’ performance did not improve throughout testing (p = 0.553). This research demonstrates how these dogs’ detection performances were impacted by changing handlers. Future research is required to determine if professional dog-handler teams are impacted similarly.

This article provides empirical evidence on the price and unit sales volume patterns of mobile handsets and mobile technologies, using data on the Finnish market. The prices and sales are studied on product category, product model, and product feature levels. The results show how the dynamic of prices and sales changed after the proliferation of smartphones. Otherwise, the dynamics seem to be relatively systematic supporting the use of simple assumptions in practical estimations. The median price of handset models decreases linearly, from 89% of the introduction price at peak sales in the fifth sales month to 47% in in two years. For mobile handset features, a decreasing price pattern was also identified. After a 10% market share is reached, the decrease is on average 30 Euros per 10% market share change. The prices at feature takeoff were identified to be on average at 58% of introduction price.

Dermatoglyphics is the scientific study of the epidermal ridge configuration of hands and feet. Digital dermatoglyphics are unique and specific evidence that greatly contribute to personal identification in forensic science. Hand dominance is an uneven distribution of fine motor skills between the left and right hands. The objective of the study is to observe gender variation in fingerprinting pattern of thumb and index fingers and also to determine the relationship between handedness and digital dermatoglyphics. The study was conducted at Saveetha Medical College and Hospital. Ethical clearance for this study was obtained from the Ethical Clearance Committee of the institute. This cross-sectional study was conducted on a sample size of 500 students, of 18-25 years of age, pursuing their education in the constituent courses of Saveetha Medical College. Handedness was assessed using the Edinburgh Handedness Inventory. The fingerprints were obtained by a 'Lipstick' method. The prints were studied using a magnifying lens. The various patterns of fingerprints were observed, categorized and compared according to standard guidelines. A total of 500 students were studied. There were 228 right-handed males, 18 left-handed males, 233 right-handed females and 21 left-handed females. In right-handed males, the thumb showed a predominance of loop pattern in (57.9 %) study participants and in right-handed females loop pattern was observed in thumb was 61.1%. In the right-handed female thumb, loops were predominant patterns in 70.8. Arch pattern is distinctively absent for both right and left-handed thumb in both males and females. 19.3 % of female right-hander had arch patterns predominantly in their index finger. Widespread interest is developing in the field of medicine and forensic science with regard to epidermal ridges. Our present study was able to observe gender variations and variations in the dermatoglyphic pattern in the right and left-hander for the first two digits.

Left handers have long held the edge over right handers in one-on-one interactive combat sports. Particularly in fencing, top rankings show a relatively strong overrepresentation of left handers over right handers. Whether this can be attributed to perceptual strategies used by fencers in their bouts remains to be established. This study aims to verify whether right-handed fencers assess their opponents’ behaviour based on different perceptual strategies when fencing a left vs. right hander. Twelve top-level (i.e., Olympic fencers, Junior World Team Fencing Champions, and top Polish senior foil fencers) right-handed female foil fencers (aged 16–30 years) took part in the study. They performed a total of 40 actions: 10 repetitions of offensive actions (attack) and 10 repetitions of defensive actions (defence), each type of action performed under 2 conditions (right- vs. left-handed opponent). While the participants were fencing, their eye movements were being recorded with a remote eye-tracker (SMI ETG 2.0). Both in their offensive and defensive actions, the fencers produced more fixations to the armed hand and spent more time observing the armed hand in duels with a left-handed (vs. right-handed) opponent. In defence, it was also the guard that attracted more fixations and gained a longer observation time in bouts with a left hander. In duels with a right-handed opponent, a higher number of fixations in attack and in defence, and longer observation times in defence were found for the upper torso. The results may point to different perceptual strategies employed in bouts with left- vs. right-handed individuals. The findings from this study may help to promote the implementation of specialized perceptual training programmes in foil fencing.

Abstract Infant handling by a non-mother is common in many primate species. Despite the requirement of a triadic relationship among handler, mother, and infant, previous studies of infant handling have focused on characteristics of handler or interactions between mother and handler. In this study, we examined the influence of the mother–infant relationship (i.e., maternal style) on the frequency with which wild Japanese macaque (Macaca fuscata) infants were handled. We analysed behavioural data collected during 3 consecutive years and found that maternal style was characterised by three principal components: infant activity, rejection, and non-protectiveness. Infants who were less active and whose mothers were less protective received more frequent handling. These effects were particularly evident when handlers were thought to have less access to the infant. These complex interactions within the triadic relationship suggest that maternal style constrains the occurrence of infant handling in group-living primates.

The risk factors for developing musculoskeletal disorders in material handling tasks are well known. Among strategies for controlling risks, modifying boxes by adding handles is suggested. However, there are no clear recommendations regarding box modification as an approach to improve musculoskeletal health. In this study, we investigated the main literature databases to identify effects of box modification on reducing physical load. Electronic and manual searches were performed to identify studies that evaluated effects of boxes handles on physical exposure during handling tasks. The included studies were very heterogeneous (methods of assessment, types of handles used, and methodological quality), jeopardizing synthesis of evidence. Despite the mentioned limitations, we could suggest some features that could improve manual handling in practical settings, like the use of cylindrical handles forms with intermediate diameters (between 31 and 51 mm) and 30° inclination. Those characteristics demonstrated positive results on physical exposure. Regular cut-outs were indicated as a beneficial approach when boxes are handled in high surfaces. When handling occurs in medium heights or in the floor level, handles positioned on the top of the box might bring better results. Efforts to standardize methods are important to support both objective and subjective assessment of box handle design, as well to improve the internal validity of studies.

Cleaning a bathroom presents several risk factors for acute and cumulative musculoskeletal injury. This study attempted to determine if using a handled tool while cleaning a typical North American bathtub/shower combination reduces the stress placed on the musculoskeletal system when compared to the use of a spray cleaner and sponge. Nineteen right-handed female subjects cleaned a systematically dirtied shower/bathtub combination using a sponge and a handled tool 21 inches long. The subjects' rated their perceived strain and effort both during and after cleaning. Videotape was obtained simultaneously from three cameras at different locations in the test bathroom and subsequently analyzed for postural data. Subjective responses indicated that subjects felt more comfortable while using the handled tool, and the majority of respondents said they preferred it to a typical sponge and spray cleaner. Postural analysis clearly indicated that the handled tool allowed users to remain in more neutral wrist, shoulder, and trunk postures a greater percentage of the time, and enabled them to remain in less awkward, more stable foot and lower extremity positions. The handled tool significantly reduced the percentage of time that subjects spent cleaning the bathtub, but not the entire shower enclosure.

Effect handlers can be composed by applying them sequentially, each handling some operations and leaving other operations uninterpreted in the syntax tree. However, the semantics of composed handlers can be subtle---it is well known that different orders of composing handlers can lead to drastically different semantics. Determining the correct order of composition is a non-trivial task. To alleviate this problem, this paper presents a systematic way of deriving sufficient conditions on handlers for their composite to correctly handle combinations, such as the sum and the tensor, of the effect theories separately handled. These conditions are solely characterised by the clauses for relevant operations of the handlers, and are derived by fusing two handlers into one using a form of fold/build fusion and continuation-passing style transformation. As case studies, the technique is applied to commutative and distributive interaction of handlers to obtain a series of results about the interaction of common handlers: (a) equations respected by each handler are preserved after handler composition; (b) handling mutable state before any handler gives rise to a semantics in which state operations are commutative with any operations from the latter handler; (c) handling the writer effect and mutable state in either order gives rise to a correct handler of the commutative combination of these two theories.

We report on the results of a measurement study carried out on a commuter bus in Dublin, Ireland using the Google/Apple Exposure Notification (GAEN) API. This API is likely to be widely used by Covid-19 contact tracing apps. Measurements were collected between 60 pairs of Android handset locations and are publicly available. We find that the attenuation level reported by the GAEN API need not increase with distance between handsets, consistent with there being a complex radio environment inside a bus caused by the metal-rich environment. Changing the people sitting in a pair of seats can cause variations of ±10dB in the attenuation level reported by the GAEN API. Applying the rule used by the Swiss Covid-19 contact tracing app to trigger an exposure notification to our bus measurements we find that no exposure notifications would have been triggered despite the fact that all pairs of handsets were within 2m of one another for at least 15 mins. Applying an alternative threshold-based exposure notification rule can somewhat improve performance to a detection rate of 5% when an exposure duration threshold of 15 minutes is used, increasing to 8% when the exposure duration threshold is reduced to 10 mins. Stratifying the data by distance between pairs of handsets indicates that there is only a weak dependence of detection rate on distance.

– The purpose of this paper is to investigate the decision making process adopted by consumers while buying the mobile handsets and to study the consumer buying behaviour towards mobile handsets. Design/methodology/approach –Consumer behaviour is observed and analyzed with the help of descriptive analysis. The effect of internal factors has been seen on this decision making process. For this purpose MANOVA analysis has been put to use. Wilk’s lambda has been considered as an analysis factor. Findings – Consumers’ buying behaviour depends upon their purpose behind buying a mobile phone. Choice of their phones differs on the basis of various functions they performed on phone; they focus on buying the phone they are familiar with and which fulfills their purpose. Research limitations/implications – Even though the world as a whole is rapidly adopting smart phones, there is a high degree of variation in how they have been adopted in different parts of the world. Practical implications – In the present competitive world, growth of smart phones is a truly global story; there are lots of important factors which create differences in how technology has evolved in different countries. Originality/value – This paper contributes to the knowledge of the marketers about mobile handsets in several ways. It would also be helpful for the marketers to know the actual decision making process followed by them while buying a new mobile handset, which will help them in formulating their strategies to attract the customers.

A major part of financial accounting involves tracking and organizing business transactions over and over each month and hence automation of this task is of significant value to the users of accounting software. In this paper we present a large-scale recommendation system that successfully recommends company specific categories for several million small businesses in US, UK, Australia, Canada, India and France and handles billions of financial transactions each year. Our system uses machine learning to combine fragments of information from millions of users in a manner that allows us to accurately recommend user-specific Chart of Accounts categories. Accounts are handled even if named using abbreviations or in a foreign language. Transactions are handled even if a given user has never categorized a transaction like that before. The development of such a system and testing it at scale over billions of transactions is a first in the financial industry.

Current evidence of how human sex-related differences in riders and handlers may influence horse behaviour is limited. The Equine Behaviour Assessment and Research Questionnaire (E-BARQ) was used to collect demographic data on riders and handlers (n = 1420) and behavioural data on their horses. It includes demographic items about the sex of the respondent and how frequently the horse has been ridden or handled by male and female humans. The questionnaire then gathers observations on the horse’s behaviour on the ground and under saddle or when driven. Using E-BARQ’s battery of 97 questions, the current study showed differences in ridden and non-ridden horse behaviour that were related to the sex of the rider or handler. Data were evaluated using multivariate analysis and revealed that horses handled by male humans were significantly more difficult to catch (t-value = −3.11; p = 0.002) and significantly more defensive when approached (t-value = −2.104; p = 0.035), but significantly less likely to pull on the reins/brace the neck or toss their head (t-value 1.980; p = 0.048) than horses handled more frequently by female humans. The differences found between male and female horse handlers suggest that sex is an important factor to consider when understanding equine behaviour. Our study explored reported differences in confidence, handling and working compliance and touch sensitivity among horses ridden and handled by male and female humans and suggested further research into how these differences are gendered.

It is true that Red burnished pottery is specially handled as a unique artifact because of its distinct characteristics in production process. Among them, Red Burnished Two- handled with holes pottery is unearthed in both dwelling sites and pits. Due to a recent increase in date, The number of unearthed Red Burnished Two-handled with holes pottery is increasing. Therefore, interest in this pottery has grown lately. Most of all, it is notable artifact that even if the period and the site are different, the pottery’s special form attribute makes it can be handled as interregional comparative criterion or indicator for timeliness in the same area. This pottery can be classified in three types. In addition to the three-attribute comparison of the mouth, body and base of the pottery, changes in the handle are identified, particularly in terms of practical purpose, the size of holes in the handle are become bigger continuously. the change occurs with other attribute’s transition. the handle, and changes in the size of the holes are the special attribute which distinguishes this pottery from other vessels. and also, These factors can mean a manifestation of new storage system by changing and using the hole in handles. the I, II types can be placed in the early period(especially in the later part), and Ⅲ types can be placed in the middle period. These features make this pottery as a data to reinforce the existing chronology table. And on the basis of this chronology table, Red Burnished Two-handled with holes pottery can become a criterion that allow us to compare chronologies between different regions or within the same region.

Past studies have shown that some female as well as left-handed students do not demonstrate a right-ear advantage (REA) for verbal materials, suggesting that linguistic functions may not be handled in one hemisphere exclusively. To examine these laterality effects more closely, 96 undergraduates were equally divided by sex and hand dominance. Moreover, experimental instructions as to which ear to focus on were provided in a dichotic listening procedure, with left-ear attendance alternating with right-ear across four counterbalanced blocks of 60 trials each. Analysis indicated a major interaction of sex × ear × instructions, with men showing a right-ear advantage when attending to that respective side, highlighting the importance of experimental demands on dichotic performance. The right-ear advantage in right-handed persons was uninfluenced by these instructions, suggesting more pronounced asymmetries in this group.
