Present study deals with fish diversity along with management aspects of lakes in Pokhara Valley. It was conducted during September 2009 to February 2010. Monthly fish sampling was done using gill net with the help of experienced fishermen. Altogether 34 species of fishes were recorded in the present study. The population status of important fish species viz., Tor Tor (Hamilton- Buchanan) was found to be endangered, that of Tor putitora (Hamilton-Buchanan), Neolissocheilus hexagonolepis (Mc Clelland), Chagunius chagunio (Hamilton-Buchanan), and Brachydanio rerio (Hamilton-Buchanan) were found to be vulnerable (VU); five species were uncommon (UN) and 24 species were common (C) including common exotic(C*). The lakes were found to be influenced by human activities such as direct disposal of domestic sewage, unscientific agricultural practices, construction of dams without fish ladder or passes, deforestation causing soil erosion etc., which were creating threat to the lentic ecosystem.

The genus Themeda Forsskål (1775: 178) comprises 29 species which are distributed in the tropical and subtropical regions of the Old World, mainly in Asia (Chen & Phillips 2006; Kellogg, 2015; Veldkamp 2016). In India, the genus is represented by about 17 species, including five endemic species (Bor 1960, Sreekumar & Nair 1991, Kabeer & Nair 2009, Singh et al. 2015). While studying the herbarium specimens of Themeda housed at CAL, we found that the name Anthistiria strigosa Buchanan-Hamilton ex Hooker (1896: 214), the basionym of Themeda strigosa (Buchanan-Hamilton ex Hooker) Camus (1920: 423), needs to be typified.

Direct evidence bearing on identification of the two new species of Gangetic stingrays named Raia fluviatilis and R. sancur by Hamilton, 1822 comprises 1) the first written account by Hamilton (then Buchanan) of his encounters with Gangetic stingrays in 1807–1813, written at the time in manuscript, but not published until 1877; 2) Hamilton's accounts of Raia fluviatilis and Raia sancur published in 1822; 3) Hamilton drawing IV 7 in the archives of the Asiatic Society of Bengal (never published, original now lost); and 4) Hamilton drawing IV 65 in the same archives (published by Hora, 1929, original now lost; this drawing is not a copy or a version of drawing IV 7). The description of R. sancur clearly is based on a species of the genus Pastinachus. Drawing IV 7 presumably is the unfinished drawing of R. sancur mentioned by Hamilton, 1822, and is therefore also of a Pastinachus. Drawing IV 65, not mentioned by Hamilton, a complete drawing with dorsal and ventral views of a newborn male Pastinachus with an intact sting, is identified as based on Raia fluviatilis. Pending revision of the genus Pastinachus, the Gangetic species is tentatively identified as P. sephen (Forsskål, 1775). Identification of Raia fluviatilis with a large freshwater species of Gangetic Himantura advocated by Annandale, 1910; Chaudhuri, 1912; Compagno and Cook, 1996; and Zorzi, 1996 is based on unwarranted assumptions. There is no definite evidence that Hamilton ever saw a Gangetic Himantura. Himantura chaophraya Monkolprasit and Roberts, 1990 is the only available name applicable to huge large tropical Asian freshwater stingrays of the dasyatid genus Himantura. No specimens of Gangetic Himantura exist in present museum collections.

Efficacy of two inducing hormones (PG and Ovaprim) was conducted on induced breeding of endangered Kalibaus (Labeo gonius). Induced breeding of L. gonius was carried out from April to July, 2022. Male and female brood fish weighing between 0.85±0.43kg and 0.88±0.50 kg in case of male and 0.97±0.641.4kg to 0.99±0.802.5kg in case of female were selected for the induced breeding and sex ratio were maintained 1:1 for the breeding purpose. The experiment was designed with the month of April, May, June and July with PG and LHRH-A. Two hormonal sources were tested to evaluate their efficacy on ovulation, fertility and hatching rate of L. gonius under controlled conditions. Double doses of PG (an initial dose of 1.5mg/kg body weight and final dose of 4.0mg/kg body weight) and single dose of Ovuline® (LHRH-A) (0.4 -0.45ml/kg body weight) showed better results in case of females. Bothe PG and LHRH-A had shown better results of ovulation, fertility and hatching rate of L. gonius in the month of May-June. Males were administered with a single dose of Ovuline® (LHRH-A) 0.15 ml/kg body weight and PG 1.5 mg/kg body weight showed better results of spermiation. Highest GSI value (22.24%) and fecundity (300411±7.16) were found in 0.90±0.80kg body weighted fish and the lowest value of GSI (20.01%) and highest fecundity (380822±9.11) were found in 1.10±0.96kg body weighted fish. The highest fertilization rates (98.40±1.17%), hatching rates (88.03±2.76%) were recorded in treatment of PG and highest fertilization rates (98.64±0.84%), hatching rates (89.55a±0.88%) were recorded in treatment of LHRH-A. This experiment recommends Ovaprim and PG both are efficient for inducing ovulation, fertilization and hatching of L. calbasu. The hatchery operators may be used both PG and LHRH-A for induction of spawning better performance of L. gonius breeding.

Sahar, Tor putitora (Hamilton-Buchanan) is a high valued indigenous riverine species of Nepal. This is declining in its natural habitat. Tor putitora and Tor tor (Hamilton-Buchanan) have been recommended as vulnerable and endangered species. Limited seed production using natural propagation has restricted its expansion in culture as well as rehabilitation in natural waters. The artificial propagation of sahar using synthetic hormone was conducted in Pokhara, AFU, Chitwan and CARP), Kathar during February to April 2017. Sixty five male (0.5-1.8 kg) and forty five female (1.1-2.1 kg) brood fish were reared in 200 m2 earthen ponds at 1000 kg/ha. Fish were fed with 32% crude protein feed at 3% body weight per day. Maturity was observed regularly for softness of the abdomen. Female brood fish with a soft and extended abdomen were injected with synthetic hormone (Ovaprim) at 0.5 ml/kg body weight. Males were not injected hormone. The fertilized eggs were incubated in Atkin hatching trays. A total of 16 females were induced to spawn, and they produced 1630.80±184.30 (mean±SE) eggs per kg body weight. Mean hatching and larval survival rates were 78.4±1.9 and 74.7±1.1%, respectively.

The industrial effluents are one of the main sources of water pollution. For an appropriate characterization and control of their discharges, the most efficient strategy is the integrated use of chemical, physical and ecotoxicological analyses. The aims of this study were to asses the efficiency of the treatment plant of a textile industry performing acute toxicity tests and physical-chemical analyses of the effluents before and after the treatment, besides evaluate the toxicity of the effluents of the Treatment System of Liquids Effluents (Sistema de Tratamento de Efluentes L?quidos - SITEL) of Distrito Industrial de Natal (DIN) and some of their physical-chemical variables. The species used in the ecotoxicological tests was the fish Danio rerio. The results showed that the treatment plant reduced significantly (around 50%) the toxicity of the raw textile effluent in only three of the seven tests but, in general, it promoted the reduction of the physical-chemical parameters analyzed. The toxicity and the physical-chemical factors of the effluents of SITEL of DIN varied among the tests and show the importance of monitoring their discharges in the Potengi river, one of the most important rivers of the Rio Grande do Norte state

Annotation:
Zebrafish Danio rerio was used as model organism in the first step of a project aiming at developing a biological confinement method of farmed fish based on the interactions between biotin and avidin. The objectives of this thesis were i) to estimate the dietary biotin requirements of zebrafish; ii) to study the effects of dietary biotin and avidin on growth, survival, feed conversion, biotin status and gene expression in zebrafish; iii) to assess the contribution of the intestinal microflora to biotin supply in zebrafish, and iv) to investigate the effects of biotin on zebrafish reproduction. The first study of this thesis has demonstrated that biotin is essential for zebrafish growth and that the optimum dietary biotin requirement for maximal growth is 0.51 mg kg-1 diet. The second study confirmed the essentiality of biotin for zebrafish growth found in the first study. This study also revealed that feeding zebrafish a diet containing avidin in 60-fold excess of biotin requirement induces biotin deficiency signs in zebrafish such as retarded growth, high mortality, low condition factor, and decreased steady-state level of acetyl CoA carboxylase-A (acca) transcripts in the liver. The third study suggested that intestinal microbial synthesis is a significant source of biotin to zebrafish. Fish fed the antibiotic-supplemented diet (1% succinylsulfathiazole, mass/mass) showed lower growth, health condition, whole-body biotin content, survival and feed utilization than fish fed the biotin unsupplemented and biotin supplemented diets. The results of the fourth study demonstrated that dietary biotin affect both male and female reproductive performances; the biotin-deficient male showed lower gonadosomatic index as well as lower sperm quality and quantity, while biotin-deficient female showed reduced fertility. The results of this thesis constitute a baseline in the understanding of the interactions between dietary biotin and avidin in zebrafish nutrition on the one hand, and in the potential use of these interactions in order to develop a biological confinement strategy of farmed fish on the other hand.

Annotation:
The decades before the Scottish Reformation Parliament of 1560 witnessed the unprecedented use of a range of different media to disseminate the Protestant message and to shape beliefs and attitudes. By placing these works within their historical context, this thesis explores the ways in which various media – academic discourse, courtly entertainments, printed poetry, public performances, preaching and pedagogical tools – were employed by evangelical and Protestant reformers to persuade and/or educate different audiences within sixteenth-century Scottish society. The thematic approach examines not only how the reformist message was packaged, but how the movement itself and its persuasive agenda developed, revealing the ways in which it appealed to ever broader circles of Scottish society. In their efforts to bring about religious change, the reformers capitalised on a number of traditional media, while using different media to address different audiences. Hoping to initiate reform from within Church institutions, the reformers first addressed their appeals to the kingdom's educated elite. When their attempts at reasoned academic discourse met with resistance, they turned their attention to the monarch, James V, and the royal court. Reformers within the court utilised courtly entertainments intended to amuse the royal circle and to influence the young king to oversee the reformation of religion within his realm. When, following James's untimely death in 1542, the throne passed to his infant daughter, the reformers took advantage of the period of uncertainty that accompanied the minority. Through the relatively new technology of print, David Lindsay's poetry and English propaganda presented the reformist message to audiences beyond the kingdom's elite. Lindsay and other reformers also exploited the oral media of religious theatre in public spaces, while preaching was one of the most theologically significant, though under-researched, means of disseminating the reformist message. In addition to works intended to convert, the reformers also recognised the need for literature to edify the already converted. To this end, they produced pedagogical tools for use in individual and group devotions. Through the examination of these various media of persuasion, this study contributes to our understanding of the means by which reformed ideas were disseminated in Scotland, as well as the development of the reformist movement before 1560.

Aquaculture is the dynamic pursuit of production of organisms from water - a process analogous to agriculture where animals and plants are cultivated from land. The field o f aquaculture is an emerging bioindustry based upon the culture and husbandry of all useful aquatic organisms. it is a significant departure from the traditional "search and capture" fisheries and may increasingly displace the hunting and catching of wild stock. Of late there has been a global upsurge for aquaculture. Increasing world population, the decision by various nations to produce more fish by developing unutilised or partially utilised water resources and depletion of natural stock due to excessive exploitation have been some of the reasons for the need to produce more fish through aquaculture.

The family Cyprinidae is the largest of freshwater fishes and, with the possible exception of Gobiidae, the largest family of vertebrates.Various members of this family are important as food fish, as aquarium fish, and in biological research. In this study, a fish species from this family exclusively found in the west flowing rivers originating from the Western Ghat region — Gonoproktopterus curmuca — was taken for population genetic analysis. There was an urgent need for restoration ecology by the development of apt management strategies to exploit resources judiciously. One of the strategies thus developed for the scientific management of these resources was to identify the natural units of the fishery resources under exploitation (Altukov, 1981). These natural units of a species can otherwise be called as stocks. A stock can be defined as a panmictic population of related individuals within a single species that is genetically distinct from other such populations. It is believed that a species may undergo micro evolutionary process and differentiate into genetically distinct sub-populations or stocks in course of time, if reproductively and geographically isolated. In recent times, there has been a wide spread degradation of natural aquatic environment due to anthropogenic activities and this has resulted in the decline and even extinction of some fish species. In such situations, evaluation of the genetic diversity of fish resources assumes important to conservation. The species selected for the study, was short-listed as one of the candidates for stock-specific, propagation assisted rehabilitation and management programme in rivers where it is naturally distributed. In connection with this, captive breeding and milt cryopreservation techniques of the species have been developed by the National Bureau of Fish Genetic Resources, Lucknow. However, for a scientific stock-specific rehabilitation programme, information on the stock structure and basic genetic profile of the species are essential and that is not available in case of G. curmuca. So the present work was taken up to identify molecular genetic markers like allozymes, microsatellites and RAPDs and, to use these markers to discriminate the distinct populations of the species, if any, in areas of its natural distribution. The genetic markers were found to be powerful tools to analyze the population genetic structure of the red-tailed barb and demonstrated clear cut genetic differentiation between pairs of populations examined. Geographic isolation by land distance is likely to be the factor that contributed to the restricted gene flow between the river systems. So the present study emphasizes the need for stock-wise, propagation assisted-rehabilitation of the natural populations of red-tailed barb, Gonoprokfopterus curmuca.
