We describe an implementation of a particle orbit-following simulation approach to the Monte Carlo calculation of neoclassical transport coecients which has been developed for application to the H-1NF Heliac. We compare and contrast some Monte Carlo transport coecient estimators that can be used in such computer codes, from both physical and computational perspectives, and we make recommendations for their use. Transport coecient calculations are performed for the H-1NF in conditions that will be available after the full National Facility upgrade.

Rational magnetic flux surfaces in fusion (toroidal plasma confinement) devices can break the magnetic field lines and reconnect them in the form of magnetic islands. Formation of these magnetic islands can have a serious impact on the plasma confinement properties of the device. Islands can in general degrade the confinement by mixing up different regions of the plasma. However there has been experimental evidence of confinement improvement by island induced transport barriers, under certain conditions. Even though there are a large number of theoretical and experimental works on magnetic islands to date, there is clearly a paucity of convincing experimental understanding on the nature of behaviour of islands in plasma. This thesis reports detailed experimental studies conducted on the H-1NF heliac stellarator, to gain an in-depth understanding of magnetic islands and their influence in plasma confinement.¶ Work reported in this thesis can be mainly divided into three parts: (a) high resolution imaging of vacuum magnetic islands and flux surfaces of H-1NF, (b) accurate computer modeling of H-1NF magnetic geometry and (c) detailed experiments on magnetic islands in plasma configurations.¶ Electron-beam wire-tomography in the H-1NF has been used for the high resolution mapping of vacuum magnetic flux surfaces and islands. Point-to-point comparison of the mapping results with computer tracing, in conjunction with an image warping technique, has enabled systematic exploration of magnetic islands and surfaces of interest. A fast mapping technique has been developed, which significantly reduced the mapping time and made this technique suitable for mapping at higher magnetic fields.¶ Flux surface mapping has been carried out at various magnetic configurations and field strengths. The extreme accuracy of this technique has been exploited to understand the nature of error fields, by point-by-point matching with computer tracing results. This has helped in developing a best-fit computer model for H-1NF magnetic configurations, which can predict rotational transform correct to three decimal places. Results from plasma experiments on magnetic configuration studies are best explained by the new model.¶ Experiments with low order magnetic islands in plasma configurations yielded some new results. It has been observed that the low order magnetic islands (m = 2) near the core of the plasma serve as pockets of improved confinement region under favourable conditions. This results in significant profile modifications including enhancement of the radial electric field near the core to a large positive value. The characteristics of islands are found to be dependent on the plasma collisionality and the island width.¶ Experiments with a magnetic configuration which exhibits no vacuum islands, but the core rotational transform very close to low order rational value, show a spontaneous transition of the radial electric field near the core to a large positive value (nearly 5 kV/m), with a strong electric field shear (nearly 700 kV/m2) and localised improvement in confinement, during the discharge. Evidence indicates that the transition is driven by the excitation of low order magnetic islands near the axis during the plasma discharge, due to the modification of rotational transform profile by toroidal plasma currents. The situation is similar to the Core Electron-Root Confinement (CERC) observed during high temperature ECH plasma discharges on other helical devices. This result provides an experimental evidence for the hypothesis that the threshold conditions for observing CERC can be reduced by exciting magnetic islands near the core of the plasma.

This thesis is concerned with neoclassical transport in the H-1NF heliac, and contains an examination of drift-orbit geometries, a description of a neoclassical Monte Carlo transport code, and a description of a method to use that code to self-consistently calculate ambipolar radial electric fields. We set out to study the contributions to neoclassical transport in H-1NF, by first describing the topology and the abundance of collisionless, trapped particle orbits in the presence of radial electric fields. We give an overview of the trapped orbit geometries in H-1NF, and develop a method to numerically classify the trapped particle orbits. On average, the trapped particle fraction in H-1NF is 40%, with approximately 5%, 15%, and 20% of the orbits in the deeply trapped, helically trapped, and toroidally trapped states, respectively. A condensed version of this component of the thesis has been submitted to Nuclear Fusion. The orbit studies provide a background for the development of a neoclassical Monte Carlo transport code, MCMuPPeT (for Monte Carlo, Multi Processing Plasma Transport). Using the code, we compare several Monte Carlo transport diagnostics, taken from the literature. Confinement times and diffusion coefficients are calculated for plasma conditions which will be achievable in H-1NF after the National Facility upgrade. Since the electric field can dominate in the determination of the transport, we develop an iterative method to self-consistently calculate the ambipolar radial electric field, using the Monte Carlo code. The method is applied to the Argon plasma conditions observed in H-1NF, in the experimentally observed Improved Conhnement Mode (ICM). To help interpret the results, the ambipolar electric fields were calculated in the same conditions using a well-known analytic model which was geometrically-fitted to H-1NF for our purposes. Qualitative agreement was found between both of the neoclassical models and the experimental results; the electric fields predicted in the ICM conditions are typically twice as large as those predicted in the conditions before the transition. The two models were also used to look for the neoclassically predicted transition from negative to positive radial electric field. Positive radial electric fields were observed, at long mean free path, in Hydrogen plasma conditions which will be achievable in H-1NF after the National Facility upgrade. We have also developed methods to optimise the Monte Carlo code for both parallel and vector computing environments. Two Message Passing algorithms that we use to parallelise the MC code are presented in the appendix.

AbstractZirconium alloys are extensively used in nuclear fuel element cladding tube, guide tube and positioning spacer grid and other reactor core structural materials because of their excellent nuclear properties. The preparation of these profiles includes ingot forging, β-phase heat treatment, hot and cold deformation processing and other processes. Among them, The β-phase heat treatment process significantly affects the microstructure and processability of zirconium alloys forging billets. OM, SEM and TEM were used to study the microstructure of Zr-0.85Sn-1Nb-0.3Fe alloy forging ingot samples after β-phase heat treatment at (950–1150 °C)/(15 min–2 h), and water quenching. The results indicated that under different heat treatment conditions, typical acicular shape martensitic microstructure appears in Zr-Sn-Nb-Fe alloy after water quenching. The size of martensitic laths increased with the extension of holding time, which showed that the length and width of the small part of the acicular martensite away from the forging plane both increased significantly; on this basis, the effects of β-phase heat treatment temperature and holding time on the phase transformation behavior of the alloy were analyzed.
