In the Grover-type quantum search process a search operator is iteratively applied, say, k times, on the initial uniform superposition database state. We present an additive decomposition scheme such that the iteration process is expressed, in the computational space, as a linear combination of k operators, each of which consists of a single Grover-search followed by an overall phase-rotation. The value of k and the rotation phase are the same as those determined in the framework of the search with certainty. We discuss how the additive form can be effectively utilized and we propose an alternative gate that realizes the same outcome as the iterative search.

Between 2013 and 2016, police in one Brazilian city killed 3,287 people—66.5 percent of whom were black. It might not seem surprising, then, that this place is also one of the only in the world that has a prison just for police. But this prison is exceptional, a “model” place, as those who run it say. It isn’t “dungeon-like” or a “warehouse of black lives,” as scholars describe prisons in this country and elsewhere. Among an apiary, a tilapia pond, and groves of citrus trees, few police are here because they killed on the job. Using ethnography from in and outside this prison, we examine narratives of socialization, redemption, and mundane and exceptional killing to illustrate what operates beneath the public veneer of the punishment of police. This lays bare key assumptions about the function of policing and the possibility of reform amid capitalism, in a vital moment of global political rupture. To speak of impunity for police violence, or of iterative gains in reform, is to dramatically misunderstand the work of policing.

A semi-analytical procedure is presented to solve the elastoplastic buckling problem of cylindrical shells made of functionally groded materials (FGMs) under combined axial and torsional loads. The elastoplastic properties are assumed to vary smoothly according to the power law distribution rule, introduced in the J2 deformation theory for formulation of the constitutive relation of FGMs in the framework of the Tamura–Tomota–Ozawa (TTO) model, which is a volume fraction-based material model. The critical condition is deduced by the Ritz method. Assuming the uniform prebuckling strain, a biaxial stress state analysis is conducted to determine the analytical position of the elastoplastic interface, which is used in the integration of the elastoplastic internal force and all the material-related structural parameters. Finally, an iterative procedure is adopted to find the exact elastoplastic critical load. Numerical results indicate the effects of the inhomogeneous parameter and the elastoplastic material properties of their constituents on the stability region and plastic flow region of the materials.

The objective of this study was to explore consumers’ use and perception of the Australian Health Star Rating (HSR). A purposive sample of fifteen Australian grocery shoppers was recruited into four focus groups using a supermarket intercept strategy. Focus group discussions were recorded, transcribed and analysed using an iterative approach to thematic analysis. Three key themes emerged from analysis. The HSR was seen as simple, uncluttered, easy to understand and useful for quick comparison across products. The nutrition information was viewed positively; however, there was little confidence in the HSR due to a perceived lack of transparency in the criteria used to determine the number of stars. Highly processed foods were generally seen as having inflated ratings and participants expressed concern that this would increase consumption of these products. Finally, there was a belief that the HSR had a lack of negative imagery limiting the dissuasive impact on consumers when presented with low-rated foods. Consumers saw benefits in the HSR but were sceptical about how the ratings were derived. Transparency about the development and education on the application may assist with consumers’ perception of the HSR.

ABSTRACT This paper describes the design of InterTech, a zero-energy mixed-use student residence hall, developed in 2018 by an interdisciplinary team of Illinois Institute of Technology (Illinois Tech) students for the U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon Design Challenge, formerly known as Race to Zero. The main focus is the team’s integrated and iterative approach, which blended architectural design and engineering concepts and led to achieving the high-performance goal. InterTech aims to provide an innovative housing solution to Illinois Institute of Technology’s graduate students and their families. Located along State Street in between Illinois Tech’s main campus and downtown Chicago, it offers a mix of living options providing both independence and access to the campus and to the city. In addition to the residential program, the project includes a small grocery/cafe connected to an outdoor public plaza, and an underground garage. Energy modeling was introduced in the early design stages. The potential of on-site renewable energy generation defined the project’s target Energy Use Intensity (EUI) of 37 kBtu/sqft. Several passive and active strategies were implemented to reduce the building’s total energy needs and meet the target EUI. The implementation of energy conservation measures led to a 25% reduction of the building’s cooling load and a 33% reduction of the heating load. A design EUI of 28 kBtu/sqft was calculated, validating that this design met and exceeded the zero-energy goal.

Abstract According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, older adults (aged 50 and older) accounted for 17% of new HIV diagnoses in 2016. The number of older people living with HIV (PLWH) is increasing because of antiretroviral therapy that allows a near normal life expectancy with HIV. Consequently, older PLWH are more likely to develop diseases associated with aging and be affected by polymedication. However, their lived experience and challenges that they face have been underexamined. In this study, we focused on community-level factors, which have potential health implications for older PLWH. We examined a subsample of participants who were at least 50 years-old (n=20; Mean=55; range 50–60) from a community-based participatory research study (n=40). Participants, who previously established HIV care, were recruited through word-of-mouth and flyers posted in the community. Interviews were recorded, transcribed, coded, and triangulated through an iterative process during team meetings. In this subsample (n=20), majority of participants were male (75%) and Black (80%). Older PLWH reported crime, social isolation (interacting with crime and stigma), and lack of access to resources (e.g., transportation, grocery store, pharmacy) as factors negatively associated with their physical and emotional health. A more holistic, complex approach to support older PLWH is essential. They should experience a greater quality of life along with longevity. Therefore, more attention to contextual and structural barriers associated with treatment and care is necessary to find a way for higher retention, (re)engagement, and adherence to care among older PLWH.

Recently we introduced an additive composition formulation of an iterative quantum-search algorithm of the Grover type. In this paper, an ensemble-processing scheme suggested by the additive composition is presented. The ensemble-processing consists of single-query search processes and yields the quantum search with certainty. Furthermore we propose a possible quantum circuit for the ensemble processing.

Kvantová výpočetní technika je rychle rostoucí obor informatiky, který přenáší principy kvantových jevu do našeho každodenního života. Díky své kvantové podstatě získávají kvantové počítače převahu nad klasickými počítači. V této práci jsme se zaměřili na vysvětlení základů kvantového počítání a jeho implementaci na kvantovém počítači. Zejména se zaměřujeme na popis fungování, konstrukci a implementaci Groverova algoritmu jako jednoho ze základních kvantových algoritmů. Demonstrovali jsme sílu tohoto kvantového algoritmu při prohledávání databáze a porovnávali ho s klasickými nekvantovými algoritmy pomocí implementace prostřednictvím simulačního prostředí QISKit. Pro simulaci jsme použili QASM Simulator a State vector Simulator Aer backends a ukázali, že získané výsledky korelují s dříve diskutovanými teoretickými poznatky. Toto ukazuje, že Groverův algoritmus umožňuje kvadratické zrychlení oproti klasickému nekvantovému vyhledávacímu algoritmu, Použitelnost algoritmu stejně jako ostatních kvantových algoritmů je ale stále omezena několika faktory, mezi které patří vysoké úrovně dekoherence a chyby hradla.

Much research has been conducted to simulate the hydroplaning phenomenon of tires using commercial explicit FEM (finite element method) codes such as MSC.Dytran and LS-DYNA. However, it takes a long time to finish such a simulation because its model has a great number of Lagrangian and Eulerian elements and a contact should be defined between the two different types of elements, and the simulation results of the lift force and the contact force are oscillatory. Thus, in this study a new methodology was proposed for the hydroplaning simulation using two separate mathematical models; an FDM (finite difference method) code was developed to solve Navier-Stokes and continuity equations and consequently to obtain the pressure distribution around a tire with the inertia and the viscous effects of water taken into account, and an FE tire model was used to obtain the deformed shape of the tire due to the vertical load and the pressure distribution. The two models were iteratively used until a converged pressure distribution was obtained. Since the converged pressure distribution could not be obtained near or at the contact zone due to very shallow water, an asymptotic method was also proposed to estimate the pressure distribution. This new simulation methodology was applied to a straight-grooved tire, and its hydroplaning speed was determined for the water depth of 5 mm, 10 mm, 15 mm and 20 mm. In addition, a simplified simulation method was proposed instead of the fully iterative method. Only one iteration was conducted at each speed to reduce the total number of iterations, still resulting in a similar hydroplaning speed. Moreover, a new simulation methodology of using LS-DYNA was proposed, and its results were compared with those from the iterative method in terms of accuracy and efficiency.

A network analysis was established to model the array of evaporative micro-channels with possible non-uniformity heating as well as branching of the channels. Iterative solution of the evaporative micro-channel network can be obtained using the Hardy-Cross method together with accurate two-phase head-loss correlations. Based on the experimental evidence, cross-cutting micro-channels reduce the uneven flow distribution in parallel micro-channels at non-uniform heating. Through this network analysis, it is also evident that cross-cutting grooves on parallel micro-channels are effective in reducing non-uniform heating effects and enhancing the uniform wall temperature distribution.

Abstract Due to its finite size and the large centrifugal load, the fir-tree root is highly stressed, which leads to the possible early failure of the gas turbine and steam turbine. To find an optimized fir-tree root is an important issue for the design of the turbine structures. In this paper, a superellipse-based design optimization approach is proposed for the fir-tree root. Rather than the straight line and arc used in literature, the combination of the superellipse curve and line are employed to characterize the fir-tree root since the superellipse curve represents a large family of curves with limited parameters, which makes the design optimization easy and economic. For the design optimization, the objective function is to minimize the peak stress, which is a typical min-max problem with possible severe iterative oscillation and subsequent convergence difficulty. To avoid this problem, a P-norm aggregation function is proposed. The superellipse parameters are defined as design variables, while the stress concentration factor and the stress at root neck are specified as optimization constraints. With the P-series fir-tree root design as example, it is proved that our approach is effective to find the optimized configuration with better stress distribution and lower stress concentration.

Mechanical indentation and plowing is one of the most widely used methods in probe-based nanolithography. Compared to other probe-based nanolithography techniques such as the Dip-pen and the milliped, mechanical plowing is not restrictive to conductive materials and/or soft materials. However, like other probe-based nanolithgraphy techniques, the low-throughput has hindered the implementation of this technique in practices. The fabrication throughput, although can be increased via parallel-probe, is ultimately limited by the tracking precision of the probe relative to the sample during the plowing process. In this paper, a new iterative learning control technique is proposed and utilized to account for the adverse effects encountered in high-speed, large-range mechanical plowing nanolithography, including the hysteresis, the vibrational dynamics, and the cross-axis dynamics-coupling effects. Moreover, vertical (normal) ultrasonic vibration of the cantilever is introduced during the fabrication process to improve the fabrication quality. This approach is implemented to directly fabricate patterns on a mask with a tungsten layer deposited on a silicon dioxide substrate. The experimental results demonstrated that a relatively large-size pattern of four grooves (20 μm in length) can be fabricated at a high-speed of ∼5 mm/sec, with the line width and line depth at ∼95 nm and 2 nm, respectively. A fine pattern of the word ‘NANO’ is also achieved at the speed of ∼5 mm/sec. Such a high-speed direct lithography of mask with nanoscale line width and depth points the use of mechanical-plowing technique in strategic-important applications such as mask lithography for semiconductor industry.

Rotary compressor has been widely used in room air conditioner. During development of the new compressor, the abrasion of bearings and the break of crankshaft frequently occurred. So it is very important to build a numerical method to estimate the reliability of the compressor. The rotor-journal bearing system is numerically solved as a dynamic nonlinear fluid-structure interaction problem in this paper. The finite element models of the rotor and bearing housings are built up by using the Timoshenko beam model. In order to get the oil film pressure of the journal bearing, Reynolds equation is solved by variation principle, and the finite element method is used to discrete the oil film. An iterative method based on the complimentary principle is used to solve the oil film force and the Reynolds boundary simultaneously. Through analysis, the abrasion position between the bearing and shaft is presented, and the bending tension stress shows the dangerous sections of the crankshaft. Through the distribution of the oil pressure, position of the screw oil groove, which is built on the inside of the bearing housing to supply the oil to lubricate the bearing, is determined. The proper position of the radial oil hole on shaft is decided by analysis of the bending tension stress.

An efficient methodology to predict the nonlinear response of bladed disks with a dry friction ring damper is proposed. Designing frictional interfaces for bladed disk systems is an important approach to dissipate vibration energy. One emerging technology uses ring dampers, which are ring-like substructures constrained to move inside a groove at the root of the blades. Such rings are in contact with the bladed disk due to centrifugal forces, and they create nonlinear dissipation by relative motion between the ring and the disk. The analysis of the dynamic response of nonlinear structures is commonly done by numerical integration of the equations of motion, which is computationally inefficient, especially for steady-state responses. To address this issue, reduced order models (ROMs) are developed to capture the nonlinear behavior due to contact friction. The approach is based on expressing the nonlinear forces as equivalent nonlinear damping and stiffness parameters. The method requires only sector level calculation, and allows pre-calculation of the response-dependent equivalent terms. These factors contribute to the increase of the computational speed of the iterative solution method. A model of a bladed disk and damper, is used to demonstrate the method. Macro- and micro-slip are used in the friction model to account for realistic behavior of dry friction damping. For validation, responses due to steady-state traveling wave excitations are examined. Results computed by ROMs are compared with results from transient dynamic analysis in ANSYS with the full order model.
