To analyze and visualize biological networks are hot in bioinformatics. Fast grid layout is a new highly efficient visualization algorithm that has advantages in generating compact layouts with biologically comprehensible modules of biochemical networks. The time complexity analyses are very important to visualization algorithm research. In this paper, we estimated analytically the time complexity of fast grid layout in detail. Experiment results for biological networks of different sizes testified the estimate. Compared with original grid layout, we also discussed the main reasons of ensuring good performance of fast grid layout.

In Malaysia, typically, the grid system of terrace houses layout has been dominated by landed housing in the property market for many years. The grid system of residential layout may offer more units to be built up by the developers. This situation may lead to fewer open spaces, playgrounds, and other recreational facilities in a strategic location within the neighbourhood schemes. Adopting some residential layout patterns may influence activities, frequency, interest, time, place, and route while doing their recreational activities. A study related to residential layout mainly focuses on building orientation, building design, privacy, safety, traffic calming, and social relation; however, a limited number of studies examine the effect of neighbourhood design on dwellers’ recreational activities routine and pattern. This paper aims to assess the relationship between residential layout design and its impact on dwellers’ recreational activities in well-planned landed neighbourhood schemes. Using observation, two (2) different residential layouts in Johor Bahru were selected as the study area, namely Taman Mutiara Rini (Presint Bakti), for the grid housing schemes and Taman Nong Chik Height for the innovative honeycomb layout. Descriptive analysis was used to analyse the data. Findings in this paper proposed recreational activities in the residential layout may be influenced by several design factors. The design of neighbourhood and outdoor open spaces, for example, played an essential role in residents’ evaluation of the various recreational activities. This study concludes that residential neighbourhoods design, including buildings and the neighbouring environment, significantly impacts people's ability to participate in neighbourhood recreational activities. Based on this research’s findings, residential layouts’ design in both study areas influenced local dwellers’ recreational activities types behaviour and preferred route through outdoor space arrangement.

The problem of optimally increasing the size of existing wind farms has not been investigated in the literature. In this paper, a proposed wind farm layout upgrade by adding different (in type and/or hub height) commercial turbines to an existing farm is introduced and optimized. Three proposed upgraded layouts are considered: internal grid, external grid, and external unstructured. The manufacturer’s power curve and a general representation for thrust coefficient are used in power and wake calculations, respectively. A simple field-based model is implemented and both offshore and onshore conditions are considered. A genetic algorithm is used for the optimization. The trade-off range between energy production and cost of energy is investigated by considering three objective functions, individually: (1) annual energy production; (2) cost of added energy; and (3) cost of total energy. The proposed upgraded layouts are determined for the Horns Rev 1 offshore wind farm. The results showed a wide range of suitable upgrade scenarios depending on the upgraded layout and the optimization objective. The farm energy production is increased by 190–336% with a corresponding increase in the total cost by 147–720%. The external upgrade offers more energy production but with much more cost. The unstructured layouts showed clear superiority over the grid ones by providing much lower cost of energy.

Layout of a store is very influential to customers’ convenience in shopping. Store layout is defined as setting the selling and non-selling, path, display shelf, placement of goods and tools connected each other that unite in a structure.This study is done to find out and get a clear picture concerning the effect of grid line layout to customers’ satisfaction of foodmart Ekalokasari Bogor. This study is also to know the average value and the relationship closeness between grid line layout and customers’ satisfaction at Foodmart Ekalokasari bogor. The result of this research shows that customers’ perception on grid line layout at Foodmart Ekalokasari Bogor nowadays is good; by using average analysis (performance – importance), it’s gotten the performance average value is 4223. While the importance average value is 4132 where the table of scale range of average analysis is good. Based on the research conducted, it can be known that grid line layout contributes 42,9% to customers’ satisfaction at Foodmart Ekalokasari Bogor. Based on the analysis, it can be concluded that grid line layout at Foodmart Ekalokasari Bogor has influence towards cutomers’ satisfaction. This can be proved based on the contribution of grid line layout towards customers’ satisfaction at Foodmart Ekalokasari Bogor. Keywords: grid line layout; customers’ satisfaction, retailers

The principal aim of this paper is to present the capabilities of newly developed GIS tools for measurement analysis of urban spatial layouts, using the square grid method. The study of urban morphology and metrology is a multistage process, which involves the metrological analysis of town plans. The main research step is the determination of measurement modules of town layouts, using the square grid. By using GIS software, the authors developed a new tool, named HGIS Tools, which allow to create any number of modular grids with the selected cell size that corresponds to urban units of distance and surface area. When investigating a large number of towns and cities, this offers a significant improvement of the research procedure. The paper presents a test of the tool’s potential on the example of regular medieval towns from the area of the former Teutonic Order state (currently the territory of Poland), diversified in terms of size, genesis and morphometrics. The obtained results confirmed that HGIS Tools allowed to determine the hypothetical measurement module of the layout of the cities studied. The results were consistent with the analyses of other authors carried out with the traditional grid-square methods. The test of the HGIS Tools showed their significant potential in conducting morphometric analyses of spatial arrangements of urban spatial layout on a larger scale.

This work studies layouts of the Butterfly network under the restriction that its input and output verticles are exposed, that is, are placed on the boundary of the grid. Avior et al. have shown that the minimal area of a layout of the n-input Butterfly, without the above restriction, is (1 + o(1))n2). The effect of this restriction on the area was left as an open question. This paper reveals that exposing the input and output vertices is essentially free. That is, it presents an exposed layout of the Butterfly having the same area as above. In this layout, the fractions of the input and output vertices assigned to each side of the grid are as follows when scanning the sides in a circular fashion: half of the inputs, half of the outputs, half of the inputs, and half of the outputs. We refer to such a layout as a [Formula: see text]-layout. The main technique employed in this layout is the reduction of the layout problem of the Butterfly to a certain layout problem of a complete bipartite graph. We use the same technique to produce a (I, 0, O, 0)-layout (inputs on one side and outputs on the opposite side) in area 2 + o(1))n2. Finally, we show that the area of a [Formula: see text]-layout is greater than [Formula: see text]. Hence, this input-output configuration is more area-demanding than [Formula: see text].

In this thesis, several Reliability-based Design Optimization (RBDO) methods and algorithms for airplane floor grid layout optimization are proposed. A general RBDO process is proposed and validated by an example. Copula as a mathematical method to model random variable correlations is introduced to discover the correlations between random variables and to be applied in producing correlated data samples for Monte Carlo simulations. Based on Hasofer-Lind (HL) method, a correlated HL method is proposed to evaluate a reliability index under correlation. As an alternative method for computing a reliability index, the reliability index is interpreted as an optimization problem and two nonlinear programming algorithms are introduced to evaluate reliability index. To evaluate the reliability index by Monte Carlo simulation in a time efficient way, a kriging-based surrogate model is proposed and compared to the original model in terms of computing time. Since in RBDO optimization models the reliability constraint obtained by MCS does not have an analytical form, a kriging-based response surface is built. Kriging-based response surface models are usually segment functions that do not have a uniform expression over the design space; however, most optimization algorithms require a uniform expression for constraints. To solve this problem, a heuristic gradient-based direct searching algorithm is proposed. These methods and algorithms, together with the RBDO general process, are applied to the layout optimization of aircraft floor grid structural design.

The goal of this thesis is to explore the CSSBox experimental rendering engine, to study new ways of layout the content of web pages, which are Grid layout and Flexbox layout, using CSS language and to design appropriate modifications for their integration into CSSBox library. At first, the CSS language is described, including detailed descriptions of the new layouts, followed by a proposal for the solution itself. The thesis also deals with a detailed description of the implementation part, which is then tested on a test set. The conclusion of the thesis evaluates the results, including the reported shortcomings and other possibilities for development.

Målet har varit att undersöka hur grafiska formgivare kan använda sig av matematisk kod i form av fraktala system för att skapa inspirerande grid. Genom att titta på befintliga fraktala mönster och sedan anpassa vissa av dem till gridsystem skapades under designprocessen ett antal olika fraktala grid. Hur väl dessa gridsystem fungerade testades i en skisskalender - en fickkalender för formgivare med plats att skissa. För att kontrollera och verifiera de resultat som kom fram under designprocesssen jämfördes de med åsikter från en fokusgrupp bestående av grafiska formgivare. Slutsatsen blev att fraktala gridsystem inspirerar grafiska formgivare att skapa dynamiska och harmoniska layouter. Och att de fraktala gridsystemen kan läggas till under kategorin konstruerade grid.

Доповідь присвячено розкриттю основних аспектів швейцарського стилю.
The international typographic style, also known as the Swiss style, was developed in Switzerland in the 1950s, emphasizing purity, readability and objectivity. Distinctive features of the style are asymmetrical layouts, the use of a grid, serif fonts and text alignment on the left edge. Style is also associated with the preference of photography over illustrations or drawings. This style became an "international" style in art, architecture and culture after the 1950s, and was used by artists from all over the world. The report reveals the main aspects of the Swiss style.

Responsive design is a common expression at the web today. This thesis was about learning about responsive web design in order to apply it to Windows 8 applications created in C# and XAML. The purpose of this thesis was to learn if responsive design can be used in such applications. This was done by first learning about responsive design through a literature study about responsive web design and then specifying responsive application design. How responsive design can be used in applications was found through research and creation of an example application. No literature was found about responsive design for Windows 8 applications in C# and XAML and therefore most of the results came from own ideas and partly solutions found on different forums. The thesis was performed at Infor in Kista. The example application was a social application which was connected to a social web service developed by Infor. Responsive web design is a technique used for making webpages adapt to the size and resolution of the viewport. This is done by creating a structured, fluid layout by using a flexible grid and flexible images. Media queries are used to set up different states for presenting the page in different ways for different sizes and resolutions of the viewport. In the different states parts of the content can for example be hidden or styled. The number of columns of information can also be set to adapt to make the page easier to view. Responsive design for applications should make the layout of the application adapt to fit the application window of the device used depending on its resolution. One way to specify a responsive design for Windows 8 applications could be to create only one application which could be used on all different Windows 8 platforms, such as phones, tablets and computers. It is probably not possible today to create this one application for different Windows 8 platforms. Another way of specifying responsive design for application is to create a responsive user interface which could be shared and used in the different Windows 8 applications. The latter was the chosen definition for this thesis. The scope of this thesis was limited to only research for responsive design in Windows Store apps and Windows Phone 8 applications. Windows Phone 8 applications are applications used on smartphones with Windows Phone 8 as operating system while Windows Store applications are used on computers with Windows 8 as operating system. Other Windows 8 devices were not included in this thesis. The final conclusion of this thesis was that although it is complicated to use responsive application design it can be used for most of the user interface. A responsive user interface for the applications can be created separately, but some parts of the application pages cannot be shared between the different platforms. This results in a mostly responsive sharable user interface.

With the process development, transistors become smaller and more complicated.In 16/14 nm process, FinFETs make a huge progress in electronics industry. Layout migration is an important task in design reuse. In order to migrate the process from 28/20 nm to sub-16 nm, we need to use FinFETs, which make DRC rules change a lot. One of the DRC rules added in FinFETs is that all gates must be positioned on the grid lines. So far, there are no tools reported for migration to the sub-16 nm process automatically. If we want to achieve this goal, one issue we need to tackle will be how to eciently align gates to grid lines. Therefore, we propose in this thesis an approach to address this issue so as to facilitate the migration of a layout to the FinFET technology.

Scattered mining was practised on Kusasalethu Mine (previously Elandsrand Gold Mine) prior to 1998, but as mining proceeded deeper, it was no longer a feasible option. The scattered mining method would have resulted in unacceptably high stress levels and energy release rates on the active mining faces. Longwall mining was considered as it was practiced on neighbouring mines. This would have ensured that energy and stress levels remained within acceptable limits and avoided the formation of remnants at depth. Kusasalethu Mine required a more flexible mining method owing to the highly variable grade, the presence of multiple faults and dykes and the high production rate required. A mining method was therefore developed that consisted of dip stabilizing pillars for regional support as well as bracket pillars to support geological structures. This was called the Sequential Grid mining method. Sequential Grid mining addressed two main problems, namely, negotiating the adverse geology and the erratic grade of the VCR orebody. However, a recent drop in production resulted in the need for alternatives and improvements to the original mining layout. This involved modifications to the design in order to increase production rates without any compromise to safety. An investigation to modify for the Sequential Grid mining method was therefore conducted by the author in order to determine the consequences for layout stability. A few alternatives were investigated to determine the best possible solution for the Sequential Grid design. As a result, the modified Multi-raise mining method was introduced to address the problems that were experienced with the original design. This study compared the original mining method and the Multi-raise mining with regards to layout stability. Investigation of the seismic data showed no significant differences between the original Sequential Grid mining and the proposed Multi-raise mining. The numerical modelling of the mining layouts showed slightly higher interim Energy Release Rates (ERR) and Average Pillar Stress (APS) levels during the extraction process. The final values for these parameters are nevertheless similar to the original Sequential Grid mining method. It is therefore concluded that the Multi-raise mining method will not have adverse effects on the mine stability. It is concluded that changes to the original Sequential Grid mine design are possible without influencing the seismic hazard. In addition the anticipated interim increases in ERR and APS levels could be kept within acceptable levels through slight decreases to the extraction ratio. The concept of an average value for the stress distribution in a remaining portion of solid rock (pillars) surrounded by underground mining excavations is used as the rock engineering design parameter called average pillar stress (APS). Although averages are generally simple to calculate given the availability of appropriate data, average values for the stress distributed with pillars is somewhat more complex especially when working in MINSIM 2000 is proposed to ensure that the calculation of APS is done appropriately. The study also investigated the use of the Modelled magnitude method to analyse future seismic trends. The study illustrated that the expected seismic trends will be very similar for the Multi-raise method compared to the original Sequential Grid mining method.

The power maximizing grid-based wind farm layout optimization problem seeks to determine the layout of a given number of turbines from a grid of possible locations such that wind farm power output is maximized. The problem in general is a nonlinear discrete optimization problem which cannot be solved to optimality, so heuristics must be used. This article proposes a new two stage heuristic that first finds a layout that minimizes the maximum pairwise power loss between any pair of turbines. The initial layout is then changed one turbine at a time to decrease sum of pairwise power losses. The proposed heuristic is compared to the greedy algorithm using real world data collected from a site in Iowa. The results suggest that the proposed heuristic produces layouts with slightly higher power output, but are less robust to changes in the dominant wind direction.

Abstract This paper describes a multiblock grid generation method for turbine cooling geometries. The method is based on the observation that cooling films are essentially branches inserted on a large trunk, represented by the passage or by the cooling duct. The small size of the films compared to the overall size of turbine blades allows simplifications to be introduced with respect to general-purpose trunk and branch algorithms. The grid generation starts from an existing layout for the passage or cooling duct grid and operates on a Cartesian patch of the trunk surface. The patch is hollowed and a templated branch layout is inserted. Padding blocks are created to connect the two layouts into a single, boundary conforming layout. The resulting multiblock grid is then smoothed using a modification of Thompson’s Poisson system. The boundary mesh distribution is not prescribed. Instead, boundary orthogonality is enforced and elliptic smoothing is performed on the boundaries as well as inside the volume. The grid size control relies on a novel Newton-like update for the control functions of the Poisson system. The smoothing step is essential in achieving good grid quality throughout and determines, in part, the template for a given configuration. The algorithm is particularly suitable for large arrays of films or other cooling decoration and results show that the proposed method can produce grids of better quality than existing methods.

This paper uses the method developed by Billionnet et al. (1999) to obtain tight upper bounds on the optimal values of mixed integer linear programming (MILP) formulations in grid-based wind farm layout optimization. The MILP formulations in grid-based wind farm layout optimization can be seen as linearized versions of the 0-1 quadratic knapsack problem (QKP) in combinatorial optimization. The QKP is NP-hard, which means the MILP formulations remain difficult problems to solve, especially for large problems with grid sizes of more than 500 points. The upper bound method proposed by Billionnet et al. is particularly well-suited for grid-based wind farm layout optimization problems, and was able to provide tight optimality gaps for a range of numerical experiments with up to 1296 grid points. The results of the numerical experiments also suggest that the greedy algorithm is a promising solution method for large MILP formulations in grid-based layout optimization that cannot be solved using standard branch and bound solvers.
