This work was motivated by my interest in combining issues concerning planning principles applied to graphic - visual products (printed) and, especially , the chart - virtual products (Internet). The main issue was to start by understanding the projective bases of these media , the world of virtual sites or web sites . Faced with so many projective factors ( eg . , Aesthetic, ergonomic, technological ) to be considered in a good graphic - virtual product , certainly , it appears that some methodological knowledge is needed to be set up so much information on a single type product service . For this it was necessary to use a qualitative research approach with in- Tuito to describe, understand and explain the phenomena involved in such design practice , in order to produce sufficient and necessary to the foundation of the work knowledge, which was directed by descriptive and exploratory research , supported mainly by the use of literature and the field study , which respectively aim to recog - lher information or prior knowledge about the problem and understand the prag - matic form the object of study from the viewpoint the observer . This research sought to show that even with so many books already released on " interface design for the web" , the apparent ease with which you can design a product to WWW allows few understand web design as one of the specialties of Design, whose practice project , however, is essentially founded on the teachings of industrial Design . In short , this work is intended for all those who need to create graphical interfaces for web and not having a more intimate relationship with the design , they are advertising , computer engineers , design students at the academy freshmen , self-taught , etc. . whose premise rests on knowing and understanding the conceptual basis of the design of interfaces for web , whose practice is primarily founded on the teachings of Industrial Design.

This thesis employs a user-centered approach to design and develop an extensible, adaptive system, the ACTIVE system to improve Web graphics accessibility for visually impaired people. It is capable of adapting to its context of use such as graphics type, asssistive technologies and user profiles in order to choose a suitable graphical multimodal application for the user. Additionally, the system consists of a user model which contains information about a user in terms of their background, experience levels, and preferences. By performing a series of experiments with visually impaired people, it reveals that people with similar profiles and experience levels prefer certain exploration conditions. Consequently, a list of adaptation rules have been derived and applied in the system. By using a feature-based approach, the ACTIVE system learns about the users from their previous interaction with applications and presents to them with their most preferable and appropriate interface. The ACTIVE system was designed in accordance with usability and accessibility guidelines. The system was evaluated with visually impaired people and the results reveal that it has improved the overall experience and satisfaction of people with sight loss when accessing graphics non-visually. Furthermore, the adaptation accuracy level of the ACTIVE system increases with the degree of system use, where 96.67% of accuracy was achieved in the experiments. This thesis shows the possibilities in developing a coherent, adaptive system by integrating various variables such as graphics types, assistive technologies and multimodalities. It also demonstrates that adaptation can bring benefits to people with visual impairments in enhancing their graphics accessibility.

Nowadays the World Wide Web increasingly provides rich multimedia contents to its users. In order to further enhance the experience of web-users, researchers have sought solutions to integrate yet another modality into the web experience by augmenting web content with haptic properties. In those applications, users are able to interact with web virtual environments (such as games and e-learning systems) enriched with haptic contents. However, it is not easy for designers without pro cient web programming background and basic knowledge regarding haptics, to develop a web application with haptic content enabled. Additionally, there is currently no standard to describe and reuse a well-described haptic application which can be played in web browsers. In this thesis, I present an MPEG-V based authoring tool for facilitating the development procedure of haptics-enabled web applications. The system provides an interface for users to create their own application, add custom 3D models, and modify their graphic and haptic properties. Haptic properties include the speci cation of collision detection mechanism and object surface properties which in turn directly a ect the force simulations. Finally, the user is able to export a haptic-enabled 3D scene in a standard MPEG-V format which can be reconstructed in a web haptic player. A detailed experiment is conducted to evaluate the force simulations, application development process and design of user interface. The results not only verify my proposed methodology, but also show the high acceptance level by users with all levels of programming knowledge of the system.

With the growing popularity of the web, companies are starting to extend current development to reflect this. When extending desktop applications to the web, it can be difficult to choose what techniques and technologies to use when solving a problem, as current solutions might not be directly applicable. Rendering high-performance interactive 2D graphics on the web can be achieved in multiple ways. The rise in open standards such as the Canvas API allows the client to render natively in the browser, provided they can receive the full object state. There are some cases where this is simply not possible, where the object state is too large, or the client is lacking sufficient hardware. A possible solution is migrating the rendering of the graphic from the client to the server. However, remote rendering comes with new sets of issues as it often lacks high interaction capabilities, and would theoretically require more resources with multiple connections. This thesis will evaluate the performance differences and individual capabilities of remote and local rendering in terms of scalability and Quality of Experience using ASP.NET Core Blazor. The evaluation is done through the implementation of the four different solutions for the scenario. These implementations are based on Canvas and SVG using remote and local rendering. Different configurations of the performed tests, such as how much data should be rendered and how many clients are connected, were used to see how they affect response time and interaction latency. The results show that remote rendering performed better in all scalability tests, with remote SVG being the recommended approach. Due to implementation issues and lack of a proper testing environment, the number of concurrent clients was downsized. This caused problems when analyzing the results, and drawing concrete conclusions were difficult. In tests with increasing image size, the client solution suffered memory exceptions, preventing the local versions to be tested further. When testing interaction capabilities by measuring interaction latency, the SVG technology significantly outperformed Canvas, since SVG does not require a full re-render of the elements.

The modern web has evolved into a highly capable software platform, which enables near-native performance, while offering installation-free cross-platform applications with a uniform user base and rapid update deployment. SVG, WebGL, and HTML5 Canvas, along with various higher-level JavaScript frameworks allow web applications to drive both 2D and 3D visualization. These technologies allow developing novel visualization applications, which can be applied in the communication domain to geospatially map service quality, and to provide tools research and education in wireless communication. We present two such web applications GeoSpy and CORNET3D. GeoSpy provides 2D and 3D visualization of geospatial data on the web. The application is primarily focused on leveraging 3D portrayals to increase the number of broadband Quality of Service (QoS) metrics, which can be attached to a single point on a map. Additionally, GeoSpy has proven to be a flexible visualization platform by giving the user a high level of customization over HTTP API data. This allows GeoSpy to venture beyond broadband mapping, and provide 3D portrayals of any well-formatted geospatial JSON API. Research of Software Defined Radio (SDR) and Dynamic Spectrum Access (DSA) can be used to significantly improve the wireless QoS. CORNET3D provides a 3D view of the Virginia Tech CORNET SDR testbed with information on which nodes and radios are operational. The application can also display 2D and 3D plots of the spectrum, which is sensed by the radios in real time. The data is sent to the client over a WebSocket connection to enable low latency, compared to conventional HTTP. CORNET3D can teach students about strategies for optimal use of spectrum resources through a game---"by providing them with real-time scoring based on their choices for radio transmission parameters. CORNET3D has demonstrated that the not only can web applications provide rich portrayals of real-time sensor data, but can also serve as a 3D "serious game" platform.

Web applications are becoming increasingly sophisticated and functionality that was once exclusive to regular desktop applications can now be found in web applications as well. One of the more recent advances in this field is the ability for web applications to render 3D graphics. Coupled with the growing number of devices with graphics processors and the ability of web applications to run on many different platforms using a single code base, this represents an exciting new possibility for developers of 3D graphics applications. This thesis aims to explore and evaluate the technologies for 3D graphics that can be used in web applications, with the final goal of using one of them in a prototype application. This prototype will serve as a foundation for an application to be included in a commercial product. The evaluation is performed using general criteria so as to be useful for other applications as well, with one part presenting the available technologies and another part evaluating the three most promising technologies more in-depth using test programs. The results show that, although some technologies are not production-ready, there are a few which can be used in commercial software, including the three chosen for further evaluation; WebGL, the Java library JOGL and Stage 3D for Flash. Among these, there is no clear winner and it is up to the application requirements to decide which to use. The thesis demonstrates an application built with WebGL and shows that fairly demanding 3D graphics web applications can be built. Also included are the lessons learned during the development and thoughts on the future of 3D graphics in web applications.

In this work, we propose a Geographical Information System that can be used as a tool for the treatment and study of problems related with environmental and city management issues. It is based on the Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) standard for Web development of graphics. The project uses the concept of remate and real-time mar creation by database access through instructions executed by browsers on the Internet. As a way of proving the system effectiveness, we present two study cases;.the first on a region named Maracaja? Coral Reefs, located in Rio Grande do Norte coast, and the second in the Switzerland Northeast in which we intended to promote the substitution of MapServer by the system proposed here. We also show some results that demonstrate the larger geographical data capability achieved by the use of the standardized codes and open source tools, such as Extensible Markup Language (XML), Document Object Model (DOM), script languages ECMAScript/ JavaScript, Hypertext Preprocessor (PHP) and PostgreSQL and its extension, PostGIS

Creative coding is the practice of writing code primarily for an expressive purpose rather than a functional one. It is mostly used in creative arts contexts. One of the most popular tools in creative coding is Processing. Processing is a desktop application and in recent years a web-based alternative named p5.js has been developed. This thesis investigates the p5.js JavaScript library. It looks at what can be accomplished with it and in which cases it might be used. The main focus is on the pros and cons of using p5.js for web graphics. Another point of focus is on how the web can be used as a creative platform with tools like p5.js. The goals are to provide an overview of p5.js and an evaluation of the p5.js library as a tool for creating interactive graphics and animations on the web. The research focuses on comparing p5.js with plain JavaScript from usability and performance perspectives and making general comparisons with other web-based frameworks for creative coding. The methods are a survey and interviews with members of creative coding communities, as well as performing coding experiments in p5.js and plain JavaScript and comparing the results and the process. The results from the coding experiments show that compared to plain JavaScript p5.js is easier to get started with, it is more intuitive, and code created in p5.js is easier to read. On the other hand, p5.js performs worse, especially when continuously drawing large amounts of elements to the screen. This is further supported by the survey and the interviews, which show that p5.js is liked for its usability, but that its performance issues and lack of advanced features mean that it is usually not considered for professional projects. The primary use case for p5.js is creating quick, visual prototypes. At the same time, the interviews show that p5.js has been used in a variety of contexts, both creative and practical. p5.js is a good library for getting started with coding creatively in the browser and is an excellent choice for experimenting and creating prototypes quickly. Should project requirements be much more advanced than that, there might be other options that will work better.

User studies play a vital role in data visualization research because they help measure the strengths and weaknesses of different visualization techniques quantitatively. In addition, they provide insight into what makes one technique more effective than another; and they are used to validate research contributions in the field of information visualization. For example, a new algorithm, visual encoding, or interaction technique is not considered a contribution unless it has been validated to be better than the state of the art and its competing alternatives or has been validated to be useful to intended users. However, conducting user studies is challenging, time consuming, and expensive. User studies generally requires careful experimental designs, iterative refinement, recruitment of study participants, careful management of participants during the run of the studies, accurately collecting user responses, and expertise in statistical analysis of study results. There are several variables that are taken into consideration which can impact user study outcome if not carefully managed. Hence the process of conducting user studies successfully can take several weeks to months. In this dissertation, we investigated how to design an online framework that can reduce the overhead involved in conducting controlled user studies involving web-based visualizations. Our main goal in this research was to lower the overhead of evaluating data visualizations quantitatively through user studies. To this end, we leveraged current research opportunities to provide a framework design that reduces the overhead involved in designing and running controlled user studies of data visualizations. Specifically, we explored the design and implementation of an open-source framework and an online service (VisUnit) that allows visualization designers to easily configure user studies for their web-based data visualizations, deploy user studies online, collect user responses, and analyze incoming results automatically. This allows evaluations to be done more easily, cheaply, and frequently to rapidly test hypotheses about visualization designs. We evaluated the effectiveness of our framework (VisUnit) by showing that it can be used to replicate 84% of 101 controlled user studies published in IEEE Information Visualization conferences between 1995 and 2015. We evaluated the efficiency of VisUnit by showing that graduate students can use it to design sample user studies in less than an hour. Our contributions are two-fold: first, we contribute a flexible design and implementation that facilitates the creation of a wide range of user studies with limited effort; second, we provide an evaluation of our design that shows that it can be used to replicate a wide range of user studies, can be used to reduce the time evaluators spend on user studies, and can be used to support new research.

Recent years have seen the development of interactive 3D graphics on the Web. The ability to visualize and manipulate 3D content in real time seems to be the next evolution of the Web for a wide number of application areas such as e-commerce, education and training, architecture design, virtual museums and virtual communities. The use of online 3D graphics in these application domains does not mean to substitute traditional web content of texts, images and videos, but rather acts as a complement for it. The Web is now a platform where hypertext, hypermedia, and 3D graphics are simultaneously available to users. This use of online 3D graphics, however, poses two main issues. First, since 3D interactions are cumbersome as they provide numerous degrees of freedom, 3D browsing may be inefficient. We tackle this problem by proposing a new paradigm based on crowdsourcing to ease online 3D interactions, that consists of analyzing 3D user interactions to identify Regions of Interest (ROIs), and generating recommendations to subsequent users. The recommendations both reduce 3D browsing time and simplify 3D interactions. Second, 3D graphics contain purely rich visual information of the concepts. On the other hand, traditional websites mainly contain descriptive information (text) with hyperlinks as navigation means. The problem is that viewing and interacting with the websites that use two very different mediums (hypertext and 3D graphics) may be complicated for users. To address this issue, we propose to use crowdsourcing for building semantic associations between texts and 3D visualizations. The produced links are suggested to upcoming users so that they can readily locate 3D visualization associated with a textual content. We evaluate the proposed methods with experimental user studies. The evaluations show that the recommendations reduce 3D interaction time. Moreover, the results from the user study showed that our proposed semantic association is appreciated by users, that is, a majority of users assess that recommendations were helpful for them, and browsing 3D objects using both mouse interactions and the proposed links is preferred compared to having only mouse interactions.

The opportunity to access the Web anytime and anywhere is more common nowadays aided by mobile phones. Although many mobile phones access the Web, this access is made difficult by the small screens of these devices. The mobile phone Web access is especially disappointing when viewing previously known pages because of layout transformation that occurs to fit into the tiny display. This work presents a proposal that aims to make more comfortable the navigation of Web pages using the previous user's knowledge of the page layout. The proposal considers creating the MobiZoom tool with a server side to convert HyperText Markup Language (HTML) Web page in a Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) document and a client side mobile phone browser using a Zoomable User Interface (ZUI). MobiZoom was implemented and a survey made. A comparative evaluation test was performed to guide when to use the proposed approach.

Annotation:
Interactive data visualizations must respond fluidly to user input to be effective, or so we assume. In fact it is unknown exactly how fast a visualization must run to present every facet within a dataset. An engineering team with limited resources is left with intuition and estimates to determine if their application performs sufficiently well. This thesis studies how latency affects users' comprehension of data visualizations, specifically 3D geospatial visualizations with large data sets. Subjects used a climate visualization showing temperatures spanning from the 19th to the 21st century to answer multiple choice questions. Metrics like their eye movements, time per question, and test score were recorded. Unbeknownst to the participants the latency was toggled between questions, subjugating frame rendering times to intervals between 33 1/3 and 200 milliseconds. Analysis of eye movements and question completion time and accuracy fail to show that latency has an impact on how users explore the visualization or comprehend the data presented. User fixation times on overlaid 2D visualization tools however are impacted by latency, although the fixation times do not significantly differ over 3D elements. The finding speaks to how resilient users are in navigating and understanding virtual 3D environments --- a conclusion supported by previous studies about video game latency.

The subject of the report is to review and evaluate the potential for vector graphics in web maps. It ishoped that a web mapping only should display vector graphics. Compared to the traditional webmapping approach, that has raster tiles pre-rendered on the server side for each zoom level. Thedrawback with raster data is that it lacks in information content compared to vector data, which interms can contribute to a richer user interface. However, vector graphics, in comparison to raster datahave a complex data structure and are inefficient to handle such as raster data traditionally is managed. Thanks to new rendering techniques for vector graphics, such as by VML, SVG, but mainly throughthe canvas element, web maps can be improved since vector graphics can be drawn directly in theclient through the browser without the need to generate data on the server side and sent it to the client.By selecting three vector-based mobile mapping libraries that use HTML5, in particular the canvaselement, each library is examined and evaluated based on their ability to use vector graphics, bothperformance-wise, by randomly generating vector data on a map comprising of the world, but alsoaccording to a number of usability criteria. Thereafter, a mobile travel habit implementation isdeveloped based on one of the libraries that meets the criteria the best. The travel habit application isdesigned to register the user’s geographical movements and subsequently display the user’s completedtrip in terms of vector data on a map. The application is developed with the ASP.NET technique thatconsists of HTML, JavaScript and C# languages. Results show that each library is superior / comparesfavourably to the others for at least one of the assessment criteria. Based on the performance test forthe rendering of vector data, the Tile5 library performed best with a rendering time corresponding toapproximately half the time it took for the second best library Leaflet. However, since Tile5 indicatesdeficiencies in the documentation, Leaflet fits the overall established assessment criteria best and isselected for the implemented of the mobile application for travel habits. For future development, Tile5has the potential to become a useful and effective tool for vector web mapping and to compete withthe traditional mapping platforms that renders raster data.

Usability guidelines for user interface (UI) design formulated by Nielsen and other authorities were used to redesign the web interface for a web based distance education course. The website's original UI, as judged by a group of web design professionals, violated standard guidelines for usability, readability, learnability, consistency, efficiency of use and flexibility. The original and redesigned UIs were tested using thinking aloud testing, a user satisfaction survey, and usability inspection. The results of user testing and heuristic evaluation suggest that the use of these guidelines in website redesign had a positive impact on user performance. A more conclusive result would have required a larger sample size and a redesigned testing protocol that varied the order in which participants worked with the old and redesigned interfaces.

Hands-on experiential learning activities are an important component of computing education disciplines. Laboratory environments provide learner access to real world equipment for completing experiments. Local campus facilities are commonly used to host laboratory classes. While campus facilities afford hands-on experience with real equipment high maintenance costs, restricted access, and limited flexibility diminish laboratory effectiveness. Web-based simulation and remote laboratory formats have emerged as low cost options, which allow open access and learner control. Simulation lacks fidelity and remote laboratories are considered too complex for novice learners. A web-based combined laboratory format incorporates the benefits of each format while mitigating the shortcomings. Relatively few studies have examined the cognitive benefits of web-based laboratory formats in meeting computing education students’ goals. A web-based combined laboratory model that incorporates motivation strategies was developed to address non-traditional computing education students’ preferences for control of pace and access to learning. Internal validation of the laboratory model was conducted using pilot studies and Delphi expert review techniques. A panel of instructors from diverse computing education backgrounds reviewed the laboratory model. Panel recommendations guided enhancement of the model design.

“OPENMODELICA is an open-source Modelica-based modeling and simulation environment intended for industrial and academic usage. Its long-term development is supported by a non-profit organization – the Open Source Modelica Consortium (OSMC).” OpenModelica aims to provide an enhanced, Open Source Modelica modeling and simulation environment and this thesis is an addition in this direction.  The purpose of this thesis is to create a web based graphical connection editor. There are other open-source connection editors available, but these editors were desktop applications. There is one web based editor but it is a textual editor. Desktop applications need installation and space on the local system. OMWeb connection editor is the first web based graphical connection editor that runs on a web browser. It’s a web platform for OpenModelica and provides the environment for modeling and simulation in the Modelica Modeling Language. The OMWeb connection editor can run on any system without the need for an OpenModelica installation. If a system is connected to the internet, and contains a web browser, it can run the OMWeb connection editor. The OMWeb connection editor uses Java Runtime Environment to run an applet in the browser. The user can create models graphically; but they can also be viewed in the textual format. The user can simulate and plot his models. The plot file generated for the model can be downloaded from the server.  The OMWeb Connection Editor uses Servlet to handle requests from the client. The servlet is responsible for the communication with OpenModelica Compiler. It also gets the results from OMC and sends them back to the client. In our case the browser is the client.

Furthermore, the key domains are presented with the new trends in different areas of web applications. In the practical part, at the beginning, there are categories of web applications defined, which are based on different business models introduced earlier. This part is followed by the comprehensive analysis in the field of web E-Commerce applications for each category of the web application, with the output of trends and best practices in the field according to each domain of the web application. It is then followed by the analysis of situation around web applications in general, because here were also some trends and best practice noticed. In conclusion I sum up the acquired results, introduce the contribution of the thesis and think about the situation around the web applications.

Annotation:
Due to the rapid developments in the field of computer graphics and computer hardware, web-based applications are becoming more and more powerful, and the performance distance between web-based applications and desktop applications is increasingly closer. The Internet and the WWW have been widely used for delivering, processing, and publishing 3D data. There is increasingly demand for more and easier access to 3D content on the web. The better the browser experience, the more potential revenue that web-based content can generate for providers and others. The main focus of this thesis is on the design, develop and implementation of a new 3D generic modelling method based on Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) for web-based applications. While the model is initialized using classical 3D graphics, the scene model is extended using SVG. A new algorithm to present 3D graphics with SVG is proposed. This includes the definition of a 3D scene in the framework, integration of 3D objects, cameras, transformations, light models and textures in a 3D scene, and the rendering of 3D objects on the web page, allowing the end-user to interactively manipulate objects on the web page. A new 3D graphics library for 3D geometric transformation and projection in the SVG GL is design and develop. A set of primitives in the SVG GL, including triangle, sphere, cylinder, cone, etc. are designed and developed. A set of complex 3D models in the SVG GL, including extrusion, revolution, Bezier surface, and point clouds are designed and developed. The new Gouraud shading algorithm and new Phong Shading algorithm in the SVG GL are proposed, designed and developed. The algorithms can be used to generate smooth shading and create highlight for 3D models. The new texture mapping algorithms for the SVG GL oriented toward web-based 3D modelling applications are proposed, designed and developed. Texture mapping algorithms for different 3D objects such as triangle, plane, sphere, cylinder, cone, etc. will also be proposed, designed and developed. This constitutes a unique and significant contribution to the disciplines of web-based 3D modelling, as well as to the process of 3D model popularization.
