This paper describes the criteria for the systematic periodization of Croatian grammar books. These criteria are exclusively linguistic and take into account the phonological and morphological structure described in these grammar books; where the grammar books contain a dictionary, the lexical organization has been taken into consideration as well. Based on these criteria, all Croatian grammar books may be systematized into four periods: I. 1604 – 1836 (old Croatian grammars), II. 1836 – 1899 (Croatian grammars from the Illyrian Movement to the end of the 19th century, with two parallel subgroups: grammars by the Zagreb School and Croatian Vukovians), III. 1899 – 1986 (with three successive subgroups: Croatian grammars from the beginning of the 20th century to 1940, Croatian grammars from 1940 to 1945, Croatian grammars from 1945 to the 1970s), IV. contemporary Croatian grammars. All these grammars clearly reveal the continuity of the Croatian literary language. This language is recognizable and comprehensible in all grammars, primarily owing to its Shtokavian stylization – and not to any kind of “organic basis”.

This commentary makes a case for a connection between the hierarchically organized skills emphasized in Greenfield's (1991t) target article and rhythmic skills utilized in music. It also links hierarchical organization with automated processing. Implicit is the notion that lower levels of a hierarchy become automatic, as they go under control of higher levels of organization.

Jackendoff's account of relating linguistic structure and brain structure is too restricted in concentrating on formal features of computational requirements, neglecting the achievements of various types of neuroscientific modelling. AbstractBy using the concept of ‘multiple grammars,’ this paper develops the view of an individual speaker’s cognitive organization of grammar. Although conversation, one type of spoken language environment, plays a crucial role in the emergence of grammar, for some speakers in a literate society, the written language environment may also contribute to developing a grammar. The two language environments are expected to provide unique incentives to shaping grammar differently as they diverge greatly in terms of media types (sound vs graph), constraints (online processing vs detachment), and purposes (interaction vs ideational formation), among others. At the same time, speakers may come in contact with and acquire additional sets of grammar for specific genres. Though the grammars acquired in different genre environments may be merged at the most abstract level, each grammar contains genre-specific formulaic expressions and grammatical resources with varying degrees of granularity. Speakers may conduct their routine linguistic activities in an informal conversation by employing reusable formulaic expressions of various types and rudimentary combinatory algorithms, but when they engage in more complex verbal tasks (politicians engaging in a debate, interviewees reconstructing past experiences), they may employ more abstract grammatical resources including those that were acquired from written language. The paper explores these suggestions by performing text and statistical analyses of several Japanese discourse samples.

This article presents a proposal for the organization of the Contextual Component in Functional Discourse Grammar. A guiding principle in this proposal is that, given the fact that Functional Discourse Grammar is a theory of grammar, the Contextual Component should provide the information that is necessary for a proper functioning of the grammar rather than aim at an exhaustive specification of all the information that plays a role in interpreting linguistic expressions. The Contextual Component contains situational and discursive information and is organized in different strata that correspond to the interpersonal, representational, morphosyntactic, and phonological levels of representation within the grammar. The contextual representations make use of the same formalizations as the corresponding linguistic representations, thus allowing for direct exchange of information between the Grammatical and the Contextual Components. Thus exchange of information is handled by an interface called the contextualizer. The article illustrates the functioning of this model by analyzing the role of contextual information with respect to three grammatical phenomena in three different languages: Unexpressed arguments in Turkish, English too, and answers to yes/no questions in European Portuguese.

Summary One of the typical features of the early grammars of European vernaculars is their sketchy treatment of syntactic phenomena. The reason for this neglect is obvious: The steady orientation of grammarians towards the traditional word-class approach virtually necessitated the persistence of the view of a sentence as a linear arrangement of words. Though historians of grammar have acknowledged John Wallis’(1616–1703) attempt at freeing the grammar of English from the strait jacket of Latin grammar, they have seen his Grammatica Linguae Anglicanae (1653) in the word-based grammar tradition. In this paper I argue that beyond the fairly traditional organization and terminology of Wallis’ grammar lies a fundamentally different approach: Instead of basing his description of English on a fixed word-class system, Wallis seems to arrive at syntactic categories via the criteria of distribution and substitution. It is these criteria (which are constantly applied rather than stated) that lead Wallis to the discovery of phrases and their internal structure. Especially consistent and concise in this regard is Wallis’ description of the structure of the noun phrase in the chapter on “The adjectives”.

Most frameworks of linguistic analysis tend to highlight phenomena of language use and/or language knowledge such as sentence and word structure, while backgrounding or ignoring other phenomena that are interpreted as being of more marginal interest for the linguist. The main goal of this paper is to argue that some phenomena that have previously been treated as being more peripheral play an important role in the organization of linguistic discourse, and that the latter operates in at least two different domains, namely that of sentence grammar and of thetical grammar. Each of the two domains has its own internal structure, and the two tend to be separated from one another syntactically, prosodically, and semantically. Building on recent research, the paper aims at defining the main characteristics of thetical grammar.

In this work, based on the theoretical framework of Textual-Interactive Grammar, we present a study of the Topic Organization process in newspaper editorials in the state of São Paulo of the 21st century. We broach the two levels of functioning of this process – the intertopic and intratopic levels. With regard to the first level, we analyze the intertopic complexity of editorials from three aspects: (i) quantity of specific discourse topics for each editorial; (ii) degree of hierarchical complexity; (iii) forms of topic sequencing. As for the second level, we investigate the existence of a general rule of internal structuring of minimal Topic Segments (SegTs) in current São Paulo editorials. In the analysis of these two levels of the Topic Organization process, we tried to demonstrate to what extent particularities of Topic Organization in the editorial genre would be related to aspects of the sociocommunicative purpose of the genre. The corpus includes editorials from Folha de S. Paulo and O Estado de S. Paulo newspapers, published during August 2016, and the research follows the method of topic analysis, which enables textual analysis based on the abstract category of discourse topic and on the unit of analysis called the Topic Segment. The data show that newspaper editorials from São Paulo can present two, three or four more particularizing discourse topics, organized, in terms of hierarchical complexity, in one or two Topic Frames. Furthermore, our analyzes show that the editorial genre is characterized by presenting continuity as the predominant topical linearization form. Our research also shows that, in the editorial genre, the minimal SegT is organized internally according to the potentially recursive combination of two units of intratopic organization – position and support, that is, our work shows that, in the genre studied, the internal structuring of minimal SegTs involves the potentially recursive combination of groups of utterances the construct central references and groupings of statements that construct subsidiary references to the discourse topic of SegT. We argue that the functioning of the Topic Organization process in editorial of São Paulo newspapers of 21st century is closely related to sociocommunicative purpose of critical position defense of editorial genre. We also assume that the very fixed character of the editorial and restriction regarding the space occupied by the genre in the newspaper determine features Topic Organization in the current editorials of the state of São Paulo.

This paper presents a linguistic study of a number of press releases issued by the organization Djurens Rätt. The study aims to examine in which way Djurens Rätt positions itself among other participants being described in their press releases. Djurens Rätt is a non-profit organization based on an ideological idea, which makes it an interesting target for investigating their approach towards other societal opera-tors in their press releases. The study is theoretically and methodologically mainly based on Halliday’s functional grammar, focusing on the ideational and experiential part of language use. In addition to these perspectives, positioning as a concept and Greimas’ actantial model are also essential to the study. The results show that Djurens Rätt uses several other societal operators in order to position themselves in the analyzed press releases. The organization appears to represent the animals in an objective and impartial way, for instance by refraining emotional expressions, occasionally describing the animals in statistical terms and mostly focusing on their opponent’s actions instead of the opponents themselves.

TITLE: Specifics of the Church grammar schools in the Czech Republic AUTHOR: Bc. Jan Pech DEPARTMENT: School Management Center SUPERVISOR: Mgr. et. Bc. Jiří Trunda ABSTRACT: The Churches and religious denominations can become school and school facility founders according to the law no. 561/2004 of the Statute book, Education law. What are the specifics of the Church schools from the management of education point of view, which this work deals with? And do these specifics actually exist? Do the tangible differences that clearly specify the Church school against the school founded by the municipality, region or the union of municipalities exist? We will focus on the Church grammar schools. There are 18 such grammar schools in the Czech Republic and all of them, were founded by the Roman Catholic Church. These institutions create a specific, not large group of schools that provide high-quality education and also pass religious values on with emphasis on respecting the uniqueness and value of each human being. In the beginning, this work shortly looks into the historical development of the Church schools and their actual legal status. Then, using the qualitative research method - the analysis of the materials, it deals with the questions of the Church schools management and noticing their potential specifics....

We present a framework to support design refinement during the virtual prototyping of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS). By instantiating MEMS components and connecting them to each other via ports, the designer can both configure complex systems and simulate them. We examine design refinement in the context of ease of use and representation of the virtual prototype. We propose the use of a common, formal grammar representation for the design entities in the virtual prototype—MEMS components, behavioral models and CAD models. We show that the formal grammar approach leads to easy creation of virtual prototypes. In this paper, we focus on ports—the fundamental building blocks of a virtual prototype. Ports mediate all interactions within and between aspects of the virtual prototype. For even moderately complex designs, there can be many interactions present. The representation and organization of all possible ports is important in the context of design refinement. We provide a set-theoretic formalism that defines the algebra of ports. We present a formal grammar for ports that represents a port as a set of attributes, and provide a design refinement mechanism that involves adding or modifying attributes in the port. We illustrate our framework with a MEMS example. We demonstrate that the MEMS designer can evaluate multiple design alternatives quickly and accurately with our framework.

The writing center at the University of Lisbon adopts a widely implemented tutoring model—a non-directive approach, focusing on content and organization (higher-order concerns), and grammar and vocabulary (lower-order concerns). This study aims to challenge this model from an English as a Foreign Language (EFL) perspective by reporting and analyzing the results of a qualitative survey of 6 tutors regarding their work at the center. Results show that although all tutors comply with the imported tutoring model, most report difficulties in implementing one or both of its central principles. Therefore, EFL writing centers should harbor a flexible methodology wherein addressed concerns are context-dependent and constantly renegotiated during writing sessions, which could have pedagogical implications in the EFL classroom.

A new approach to enacting processes “on the fly” by the participants is proposed for collaborative manufacturing. This approach allows the selection and planning of processes at a higher level as mutiple participants around the world can theoretically engage in planning the processes. Reconfigurable manufacturing system in such scenario means the selection of an appropriate sequence of processes, the process planning of the selected processes and the assignment of appropriate resources to carry out the processes. To achieve that, it requires a new method of representing, sharing and executing process information. In addition, the representation of organizations providing the services and their resources is the prerequisite to the problems we intend to resolve. Thus, rather than applying it to develop a new process planning, this paper proposes this system to connect, share, and reconfigure the network of manufacturing and design companies who are collaborating for a common project. Our system called MIDAS provides functionalities for the representation of processes including alternatives, the planning of resources and the execution of process. Moreover, MIDAS uses XML to encode the process grammar, constraints and other business, design and manufacturing logic, facilitating scalability required for large-scale collaboration.
