Annotation:
“Triangle zone” geometry is well established in thrust tectonics, where the leading edge of a frontal thrust branches backward onto a hinterland-directed roof thrust, and the triangle zone thus formed defines the thrust system’s leading edge. Similar geometries occur in extension and inversion settings, where a triangle zone can form between a deep-seated master fault and a roof fault or backthrust located in a hanging-wall detachment. In basement-controlled extension, triangle zone development can occur when the shear strength of the master fault plane in the zone above a hanging-wall detachment cutoff exceeds that of a new or reactivated antithetic fault detaching on the hanging-wall dip slope. This structural style is characterized by pronounced hanging-wall synclines linked to detached extensional faults higher up the hanging-wall dip slopes. The same principles apply during early phases of inversion tectonics. The part of the master fault that is above the hanging-wall detachment cutoff may constitute a buttress that causes displacement to backthrust along any available detachment into accommodation structures such as emergent ramps. This structural style is characterized by compressional structures within the graben while there is minor or even no sign of inversion on the graben margin faults. These geometries could be accounted for by other processes, for example, localized deep-seated fault-controlled structures within graben, or salt redistribution. However, fieldwork and analog models demonstrate the admissibility of triangle zone kinematics across a range of tectonic settings in the presence of detachment layers that are thin relative to the overall stratigraphy — typically tens to hundreds of meters in thickness. These models can guide seismic interpretation of unusual fold structures in extensional and inverted graben. Seismic interpretation examples were evaluated from the North Sea and Saudi Arabia.

Abstract Background IA is a major cause of morbidity and mortality for patients with hematological malignancies and has been mainly reported in patients with acute myeloblastic leukemia (AML) and stem cell transplantation. Much less is known about the role of IA during the treatment of lymphoproliferative diseases like ALL. Here, we retrospectively evaluated the characteristics of patients and the incidence of IA occurring during the induction course in adult ALL patients enrolled in the GRAALL-2005 trial. Methods We collected the data of 36 patients with IA during induction chemotherapy. All were included between May 2006 and October 2012 in the multicentric GRAALL-2005 phase III trial. According to ALL characteristics, these patients were treated in 3 different substudies: GRAALL, GRAALL-Rituximab (GRAALL-R) for CD20+ ALL, GRAAPH for Philadelphia (Ph) chromosome-positive ALL. IA was defined retrospectively using the EORTC modified criteria (De Pauw, CID 2008). Results Among the 969 patients enrolled, 36 (3.7%) developed IA during induction therapy. The median age was 30 years for all patients receiving induction and 47 years (range, 18 to 59) for patients with IA. We observed 18 IA (3%) by the GRAALL protocol (593 patients enrolled), 16 (8.3%) by the GRAALL-R protocol (191 patients enrolled), and 2 (0.7%) by the GRAAPH protocol (270 patients enrolled). In the GRAALL-R protocol, IA was diagnosed in 6 patients randomly assigned to receive rituximab and in 10 patients treated in the control group. The median time between first day of induction therapy and IA diagnosis was 20 days (range, -2 to 71). The median time between the first day of neutropenia and IA diagnosis was 18 days (range, 0 to 76). At the time of IA diagnosis, 13 patients were hospitalized in laminar airflow rooms, 10 patients in rooms with overpressure, 1 patient in a room with high-efficiency particulate filter, 5 patients in conventional rooms, 1 patient received home care and the type of hospitalization was unknown for the 6 remaining patients. Four patients with IA (11%) had received antifungal drug for invasive fungal infection (IFI) prophylaxis: one patient received fluconazole, one received caspofungin, and two received liposomal amphotericin B. All patients with IA presented pulmonary symptoms associated with a sinusal or cutaneous localization in 1 and 2 patients respectively. The diagnosis of IA was classified as possible in 7 episodes (19 %), probable in 22 episodes (61%), proven in 4 episodes (11%), and indeterminate in the remaining 3 episodes. Detection of Aspergillus antigen in serum by latex agglutination was positive in 24 cases (67%). Chest CT scans were taken for 33 patients (92%): nodules were found in 19 patients, halo sign in 20 patients, and “air crescent sign” in 1 patient. Bronchoalveolar lavage was performed in 11 patients (31%): culture was positive in 7 of them and Aspergillus antigen was positive in 2 of them. Biopsies where positive in 4 cases: in pulmonary biopsy in 3 patients and in cutaneous biopsy in 1 patient. Of all the Aspergillus isolates identified to the species level, Aspergillus fumigatus was isolated from 4 patients and Aspergillus flavus from 1 patient. Overall and IA-attributable 12-week mortality was 8 (0.8%) and 6 (16.7%) patients respectively. Conclusion IA is less frequently observed during induction therapy in adult ALL as compared to adult AML patients. However, the attributable mortality appears to be high in these patients. They are as at risk patients for IA and should be included in prophylactic and empirical antifungal clinical trials. Disclosures: No relevant conflicts of interest to declare.

The recent upsurge of violence against Muslims in various parts of Sri Lanka has grabbed the attention of popular discourses. However, little scholarly analysis has dealt with the recent rise of anti-Muslim sentiment and violence in the country, particularly the violence in Ampara and Kandy. As such, this article explores the implications and root causes of violence in Ampara and Kandy. This article is descriptive and interpretative in nature and mainly relies on secondary data. The article reveals that the violence in Ampara and Kandy unleashed by Sinhala Buddhist hardliners with complicity of law enforcement agencies caused much damage on the mosques, businesses and properties of Muslims. I argue that phobia against growing Muslim population, myth of sterilization pills, and economic jealousy and rivalry between Muslims and Sinhalese are the root causes of the violence against Muslims in Ampara and Kandy with some other sub-factors associated with it. Thus, there is a desperate need of better managing human and social security of all groups in the country, especially ethno-religious minorities.

AbstractA geomorphic investigation of the Salinas de Oro salt diapir in the Pyrenees reveals that the ring fracture pattern related to the karstic collapse of the diapir crest may vary significantly depending on the rates of dissolution and salt flow, and the rheology of the overburden. The salt diapir has well-developed concentric faults related to salt dissolution subsidence throughout the Quaternary. Roof strata accommodate subsidence by a combination of downward sagging and brittle collapse leading to the development of a ring monocline that is broken by 5 to 20 m throw conjugated normal faults and a 40 m throw, 9.5-km-long and 200-m-wide keystone graben. The salt diapir top has >100-m-long sinkholes that coalesce to form hollows >70 m deep. Up to 3-km-long radial grabens with a 70 to 90 m vertical throw overprint concentric-ring faulting and displace Quaternary deposits demonstrating active salt flow and diapir rise. Radial faults are linked with salt-withdrawal faults of the Andia Fault Zone (AFZ). Salt flow from the AFZ into the Salinas de Oro salt diapir causes brittle gravitational extension of limestone strata leading to a sequence of grabens and Quaternary faults >10 km long and several hundred meters deep.

A randomized complete block experiment (factorially arranged) with Ilex x attenuata `Foster II' semi-hardwood cuttings was conducted to test the efficacy on rooting of three IBA carriers (water, talc, and a hydrophilic gel--“Water Grabber”). Three IBA concentrations (0, 4000, 8000 ppm) and three rooting medium temperatures [ambient (13.3 - 20.6), 18.3, and 23.9° C] also were employed. Cuttings were harvested at 8 and 15 wk after sticking under intermittent mist. Rooting did not vary with talc IBA concentration. The 29.3° C rooting medium increased stem (1.24 cm, basal)/root dry weight (g) during the first 8 wk but not at 15 wk. More rooting occurred at 8 wk with 4000 ppm IBA gel treatment than with talc, with reduced rooting at 8000 ppm IBA (gel). Increased rooting (8, 15 wk) occurred with 4000 ppm IBA with water and gel carriers; however, rooting was less (below the 4000 ppm IBA levels) with 8000 ppm IBA. Overall, water and gel treatments performed about the same.

Palm oil is one of the main agricultural contributors to Malaysia’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Although commercial palm oil plantations have flourished in Malaysia for decades, there is still room for improvement especially in minimizing manpower load and developing efficient machinery to improve the various processes involved in the palm oil industry from estate to the mills. This paper presents a modified towable backhoe to assist in the Fresh Fruit Bunch (FFB) collecting process as an effort to save time. The main objective of this study is to design a machine that can be used by smallholders of oil palm in order to help speed up the work process. With a boom extension and an innovative grabber, the pressure needed to operate the hydraulic system was analyzed to ensure the towable backhoe functioned effectively and fulfilled its objectives. From the calculations done, the maximum pressure that the system can supply is 31.28 MPa which is higher than the 11 MPa minimum required for the hydraulic system to operate.

The association of coal and oil shale had been a hot topic for a long time. Various types of association of coal and oil shale can be found in one basin, for instance, the coal can act as the roof or floor or interlayer of the oil shale, etc. The most crucial factor for the formation of oil shale is stratification and seasonal blooming of lower plankton, while the final formation of the coal still need a hypoxia restored deposition environment. We take Huangxian and Fushun basins as typical examples to study the coal and oil shale sedimentary mechanisms controlled by the boundary fault. We found that the sedimentary mechanisms are different in different stages during the process of basin evolution. In the early stage, the association of coal and oil shale with thinner layers can be found. In the late part of early stage, thick layer coal seams and oil shale can be formed because of the relative stable faults. In the middle stage, thicker oil shale can be formed in deep lake and thicker coal seams can be formed in the lacustrine shore. In the late stage of basin evolution, the association of thickest coal seams and oil shale can be formed as the stable tectonic environment. Compared with the depression basin, more active fault and short cycle subsidence controlled by the episodic tectonic movements are the obvious characteristics. Higher rate of tectonic subsidence and a vast difference between sedimentary (peat-bearing) supply rate and accommodation space change rate are in favor of forming oil shale, and slower rate of tectonic subsidence is favor of forming coal. The study found that faulted structures obviously control the development, thickness and distribution characteristics of oil shale and coal. As mentioned the above, the episodic tectonic movement of continental rift basin controls the types and filling and evolution of deposits.

Abstract The aim of this study was to determine the potential development of water sorptivity of soil aggregates by heating. Soil aggregates were sampled from arable layer of 5 Polish soils: Haplic Luvisol 1 from Czesławice, Haplic Luvisol 2 from Wierzchucinek, Haplic Cambisol from Felin, Gleyic Mollic Cambisol from Chylice, and Haplic Phaeozem from Grabiec. Three aggregates of each soil type with minimum diameter between 4 and 10 mm were heated in the oven for at least 3 hours at temperatures 20, 100, 200, 250, and 360ºC. After each temperature treatment the soil aggregates were conditioned at the room temperature for 16 hours. Laboratory measurements of water sorptivity of soil aggregates were performed under a negative tension h0 = -2 cm using tension infiltrometer. It was found that the exposure to temperatures between 100 and 200°C tends to decrease water sorptivity of aggregates from all the studied soils but one (Haplic Luvisol 1), followed by about two- to four-fold increase in water sorptivity for exposure to temperatures of 250°C (in Haplic Luvisol 1, Haplic Luvisol 2, and Haplic Phaeozem) or 360°C (in Haplic Cambisol and Gleyic Mollic Cambisol).

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of transition room placement by comparing the academic achievement and readiness for middle school of two groups of fifth grade students. The Readiness Group had received an extra year of school between kindergarten and first grade which gave them a year's age advantage over the Non-readiness Group.First, second, third, and fourth grade standardized test scores were collected from students' permanent record cards and used for comparisons of academic achievement. Social, emotional, and academic readiness for middle school were judged by fifth grade teachers using an instrument developed by the researcher. An analysis of variance (ANOVA) with repeated measures was used to test five null hypotheses. A simple effects test was conducted on each hypothesis to further interpret the results. The .05 level of significance was postulated for the rejection of the five null hypotheses. The results of the study were as follows:1. At the end of first grade, the Readiness Group had a slight but not significant academic advantage. The Non-readiness Group scored significantly higher on measures of reading, mathematics and composite standardized achievement test scores at second, third, and fourth grades.2. Fifth grade teachers judged the Non-readiness Group significantly higher on behavioral characteristics that reflect social, emotional and academic readiness for middle school. The most significant educational implication is that school systems need to examine their criteria for readiness placements and evaluate the long-term benefits of this extra year of school.

The number of students electing to study music at the Senior Level in Queensland State High Schools has declined over recent years. Year 8 is the last time that students experience music lessons before being faced with subject choices. This study investigates the year 8 music program - its content and delivery. What can be done to improve music teaching in year 8? How can we present experiences at this level that will stimulate students' interest; improve their knowledge and skills; and develop students' aesthetic sensitivity to the art of music? This study involved conducting an action research project in a year 8 music class. This was done in collaboration with the classroom music teacher and her class of 25 students. The cyclical process as described by Zuber-Skerritt - acting, observing, reflecting, planning - was adopted. The study aimed: (a) to document positive experiences that could be used in the year 8 music classroom; (b) to stimulate new interest in the studying of senior music; (c) to discover ways to encourage music teachers to become reflective practitioners with a view to improving their practice; (d) to offer an action research model that other music teachers could implement in their classroom. The data collection involved the keeping of journals by the teacher and researcher; recorded interviews with the teacher and students; videos and photographs of the class; as well as interviews with other year 8 music teachers. The study identified a negative attitude by music teachers to the teaching of year 8 music. The dominant theme being taught at this level is Pop Music with a foundation unit being the starting point. Year 8 students also revealed a negative attitude to music lessons. This research project has demonstrated that it is possible to set up a program which engages year 8 students in music making and provides them with worthwhile learning experiences. However, at the end of the project, there was not a significant increase in the number of students electing to study music at the senior level. The study also set up a model for action research that could be adopted by other music teachers in their classrooms. The results of reflective practice employed by the researcher and the music teacher provided positive attitudes for other music teachers and encouragement for others to implement this practice in their classroom. Further studies are needed to involve other music teachers in reflective practice; collaboration in action research (especially in the year 8 classroom); and also the implementation of the new syllabus that will have a positive effect on the future of the subject of music and a positive effect on students' attitudes to the music subject.

Vineyards in the Mid-Atlantic often have large, vigorous vines that can be costly to manage and produce inadequate fruit for wine production. Dense canopies increase the incidence of fungal disease, require greater allocation of resources to manage, and inhibit fruit development. The primary objective of these studies was to determine effective vine-size modification treatments that would optimize fruit quality, while reducing labor and chemical control. Research factors included root manipulation, under-trellis ground cover, and rootstock. Treatment levels were root bag (RBG) or no root manipulation (NRM); under-trellis cover crop (CC) or herbicide strip (HERB); and one of three rootstocks: 101-14, Riparia Gloire, or 420-A. Effects of these treatments were measured in two experiments: Experiment I compared combinations of all three treatments, while Experiment II explored the individual effects of root restriction using root bags of varying volumes. Root restriction consistently demonstrated the ability to reduce vegetative growth and vine water status. In the first experiment fruit-zone photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) was increased by 234% in RBG vines. Timed canopy management tasks indicated that RBG canopies required about half the labor time of NRM canopies. Anthocyanin concentration and total phenolic content were increased by 20% and 19% respectively in RBG fruit. CC increased fruit-zone PPFD by 62%, and increased soluble solids and color compounds. The 420-A rootstock reduced potassium uptake, resulting in lower must potassium concentration. Results demonstrated that these treatments significantly reduce vegetative growth in a humid climate, decrease management labor, and produce higher quality fruit.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The effect of drying conditions on the retention of harpagoside, a glucoside iridoid found in the indigenous Southern African plant Harpagophytum procumbens (Devil's Claw), was investigated. Additionally, the feasibility of using near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) as a rapid and nondestructive analytical tool for the prediction of the iridoids harpagoside (HS), 8-p-coumaroyl harpagide (8pCHG) and moisture contents, as well as the HS:8pCHG ratio in Devil's Claw was also studied. Due to the purported medicinal activity ofthe tuberous secondary roots, Devil's Claw is of commercial interest with a well established export market in Germany. The stability of HS during processing has, however, never been investigated and the current study evaluated the effect of three drying methods (sun, tunnel and freeze-drying), as well as three tunnel-drying temperatures (40°C, 50°C and 60°C, dry bulb temperature) on HS content. Methanolic extracts (70% methanol-water) were analysed by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and a multiple extraction test (n = 12) indicated a 91.70% recovery for HS. The comparative drying results showed significant (P < 0.05) differences between tunnel and freeze drying on the one hand and sun-drying on the other, with the latter being the most detrimental technique. In comparing tunnel-drying temperatures, at a constant relative humidity (RH) of30%, drying at 40°C showed the lowest retention ofHS, differing significantly (P < 0.05) from that at 50°C. Drying at 60°C did not differ significantly (P > 0.05) from either of the other two conditions, but also resulted in lower retentions ofHS content than drying at 50°C. Overall, freeze-drying showed excellent results for HS retention (1.565% ± 0.394%; mean ± standard deviation), but economic constraints limit the commercial application of this drying method. Although further study is required to optimise tunnel-drying conditions, this method indicated acceptable and practical results (1.526% ± 0.396%), especially with conditions set to 50°C and 30% RH (1.750% ± 0.438%). Future research should concentrate on elucidating the degradation mechanisms of HS during processing, transport and storage of dried Devil's Claw root. The analysis of dried, ground Devil's Claw root by NIRS was referenced to HPLC analyses of the same methanolic extracts used in the drying studies. The spectra were generated on two different NIRS instruments by measuring diffuse reflectance of the powder whilst calibrations were performed by partial least squares regression. Both independent data set validation and full cross-validation were used to evaluate the performance and predictive abilities of the various models. Excellent moisture content (MC) calibrations were developed with a standard error of prediction (SEP) ofO.24% (range: 2.44% to 10.43%) and correlation coefficient (r) of 0.99. For the given MC range, the model performed very well against the standard error of laboratory (SEL) ofO.14%. Considering the sensitivity of the HPLC reference method (SEL = 0.035%), the HS content calibration (range: 0.693% to 2.244%) performed admirably with an SEP ofO.134%. The available range was, however, relatively small and future NIRS studies should incorporate a larger range if possible. The 8pCHG model (range: 0.069% to 0.290%) performed similarly, with a standard error of cross-validation of 0.028% and SEL of 0.007%. By inclusion of a second species, H. zeyheri, both the 8pCHG content and especially HS:8pCHG ratio (range: 1.84 to 34.48) calibrations were evaluated as possible methods of distinguishing between species. With 8pCHG values of ca. 0.9%, good separation was achieved for the first model but, contrary to previous studies, the ratio was found to be less successful. Principle component analysis of the spectra, however, showed great potential as a qualitative tool for this purpose. It is believed that NIRS can become an invaluable tool for the division of Devil's Claw into export classes, depending on HS content. This content is, however, dependant on the drying conditions used and drying parameters should be optimised to ensure the best possible quality and retention ofHS.

Vegetative roofs (VRs) can be classified into two types : Extensive (EGR) and Intensive (IGR). The main differences between the two are the type of vegetation, the depth of the substrate. This research aims to achieve the following objectives : 1. Determine and compare the potential environmental impacts of traditional gravel ballasted roofs (TGBRs), white reflective roofs (WRRs), EGRs, and IGRs ; 2. Evaluate and compare the energy performance and the heating/cooling demand of TGBRs and EGRs ; 3. Determine and compare the water management potential and the runoff dynamics of TGBRs and EGRs. The first objective was covered by performing a comparative Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) on a real EGR of 834m2 and on three fictitious roofs of the sane area : of TGBRs, WRRs, and IGRs. Results indicated that the EGR had the least potential environmental impacts for the 15 impact categories considered. The second and third objectives were achieved by first installing one TGBR mockup and two EGR mockups on the rooftop of the Chemical Engineering Department at the University of Balamand, Lebanon. EGR8 and EGR16 are EGR mockups differed in the roof slope, the depth and the composition of their substrate. Temperature profiles at different substrate depths clearly indicated the reduction of the temperature fluctuations under the substrate layer, the heat storage effect, and the passive cooling effect. The economic study showed that EGR could save up to 45USD/200m2/month compared to TGBR. The water management performance of EGRs illustrated that the soil composition of EGR8 was more efficient than that of EGR16. In contrast, EGR acted as a sink especially for cadmium, iron, calcium, and ammonium

Chapter 3 discusses the immediate responses to Montagu’s work undertaken by a number of Reformed Conformists. It exhibits the range of polemical approaches they used and establishes that Reformed Conformists were in the vanguard of the public opposition to Montagu. Featley’s Parallels illustrate how Reformed Conformists brought the teaching of the academy to bear within the public sphere. His Ancilla exhibits the use of devotional literature to advance their cause. Ward’s Gratia Discriminans sets out the Reformed Conformist case that their theology of grace did not undermine human free choice. Carleton’s Examination addressed Montagu’s suggestion that a Reformed view of grace was a manifestation of Puritanism and asserted its consonance with the Thirty-nine Articles. Hall’s unpublished Via Media, by contrast, advocated an irenic and moderate reading of English orthodoxy, but one in which there was still no room for any teaching that made salvation ultimately dependent on the human will.

Chapter 2 builds on the previous chapter’s emphasis on the breadth and pastoral orientation of the Reformed Conformist approach to grace, with an examination of the Collegiate Suffrage of the British delegates at the Synod of Dort (1618–19). It underlines that the Suffrage was drawn up to make room for Davenant and Ward’s distinctive reading of the death of Christ, a reading shared by influential clerics at home. The chapter then shows how the positions adopted in the Suffrage were echoed but also given a different inflection in the lectures that Davenant delivered in Cambridge when he returned from the Synod. Davenant’s lectures on predestination and the death of Christ show how he adapted the teaching of Dort to suit his own reading of the Church of England’s confessional position, whilst offering extensive advice on its pastoral application both in the pulpit and in the spiritual lives of the faithful.

When traffic accidents occur, transport systems can result in irreparable negative impacts on people as well as the environment. In maritime transport unexpected fire in the ship’s engine room represents a grave risk. Because such accidents are very often difficult to prevent, modelling of fire propagation bears a vital significance for setting up preventive measures and safety systems, whose task is the suppression of fire danger. The paper describes the CFAST computer model (Building and Fire Research Laboratory - National Institute of Standards and Technology), whose purpose is to solve the problem of fire propagation in a complex multi-compartment environment. In our example it was used in a concrete ship’s engine room, with a fire starting in the ship’s main propulsion engine. The application includes all elements that can be damaged in case of fire at different ventilation conditions of the ship’s engine room. By means of simulation, the analysis and presentation of physical parameters working upon exposed engine components was made.

Abstract The objective of this study is to predict ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) erosion behavior and Retained Strength (RS) under environmental conditions using an Integrated Computational Material Engineering (ICME) physics-based approach. The state-of-the-art erosion analysis using phenomenological algorithms and Finite Element Models (FEM) models follows a test duplication methodology and is not able to capture the physics of erosion. In this effort, two CMC systems are chosen for Erosion evaluation: (a) Oxide/Oxide N720/alumina; and (b) MI SiC/SiC. Experiments are conducted at room and elevated temperatures (RT/ ET). Erosion testing considers: (i) a high velocity oxygen fuel (HVOF) burner rig for ET, and (ii) a pressurized helium impact gun for RT. Erodent particles are chosen as alumina and garnet. Experimental observations show that the type of erodent materials affects CMC erosion degradation at ET. Alumina exhibits to be an effective erodent for maintaining a solid phase particle erosion, while Garnet, experiences some degree of melting. Erosion of the oxide/oxide composite is more severe for the same erodent, temperature, mass, and velocity conditions than the MI SiC/SiC composite for all conditions tested. In general, increasing erosion temperature results in increasing erosion rate for the same erodent mass/velocity condition. In conjunction with experiments, a computational Multi-Scale Progressive Failure Analysis (MS-PFA) is also used to predict erosion of the above-mentioned material systems at RT/ET. The MS-PFA augments FEM by a de-homogenized material modeling that includes micro-crack density, fiber/matrix, interphase, and degrades both fiber and matrix simultaneously during the erosion process. Erodent particles are modeled by Smooth Particle Hydrodynamic (SPH) elements. Erosion evolution in CMCs considering strain rate effect predicts a) spallation, b) mass-loss, and c) damages in fiber, matrix, and their interphase. ICME modeling is capable of predicting the erosion process and reproducing the test observation for the MI SiC/SiC at RT, where: a) erodent particles break up the layer of matrix covering fiber due to interlaminar shear (delamination); b) fiber is fractured because of brittle behavior; c) the process (erosion tunneling) continues till it gets to the next thick matrix layer that slows down the tunneling; and d) Erosion tunnel widens as exposed fiber layers are removed (eroded). Simulations are also performed for erosion of the oxide/oxide due to glass beads at RT and ET. Predictions show that erosion rate is lower at ET because voids in the CMC vanish and the glass beads are less effective at ET. Finally, prediction of retained strength of eroded CMC test specimens is predicted by MS-PFA.

Annotation:
Abstract In recent years, it has become common practice for operating companies to make a significant effort in the planning of gravel pack installations, especially in their most important wells. Typically, the placement of the gravel pack is accurately modelled, and multiple contingencies developed for potential alternative scenarios to reduce the overall risk of execution. After the pack has been placed, the use of down-hole gauge data enables the gravel pack to be fully evaluated in order to confirm success and investigate any issues or failures. This understanding feeds into improved designs and ever higher success rates for future completions. The most challenging gravel packs Operators are installing today are those placed in long horizontal open holes, around screens fitted with Inflow Control Devices (ICDs) or Autonomous Inflow Control Devices (AICDs). Simulating gravel pack placement in wells such as these requires the effective modelling of unusually dynamic and complex flow paths. Until recently, no simulator could adequately model these treatments. Most jobs have also been done without the downhole gauges necessary for a complete job evaluation, which has resulted in a lack of data for job evaluation and understanding. Consequently, completions requiring the pack to be placed around ICD/AICD screen assemblies have, until recently, been done without the assurance of pre-job gravel pack placement modelling. The lack of an adequate simulator has also meant that, even on these complex and valuable wells, Operators have been restricted to simple volumetric evaluation of their success. With no way to understand actual packing mechanisms or investigate root causes of failures, the assumptions made on how packing occurs in these complex wells have remained unconfirmed. Recent evolution of gravel pack simulators has made the effective pre-job simulation, and post-job evaluation, of gravel packs placed around ICD/AICDs a reality. This paper presents the results of the first evaluation of a multi-proppant deep water horizontal alpha beta gravel pack around AICD screens. It facilitates the understanding of how such gravel packs are placed, validates the packing efficiencies, and illustrates the benefits of using multiple gravels for packing.

The use of creep strength enhanced ferritic alloys, such as Grade 91, in fossil power plants has become popular for high temperature applications. Since Grade 91 has higher stress allowables than Grade 22, a designer can specify thinner component wall thicknesses, resulting in lower through-wall thermal stresses during transient events and lower material and pipe support costs. During the past two decades, Grade 91 has been used successfully in fossil power plants. However, this alloy has had some incidents of premature failures. Case histories discuss such factors as excessively hard material, extremely soft material, overheating failures, and improper mill processing. This compilation also discusses likely root causes and solutions to avoid these potential Grade 91 problems.

Abstract When the Appendix G methodology, fracture toughness criteria for protection against failure, was first adopted by ASME Section III in 1972, it included a lower-bound Kir curve for ferritic steels with specified minimum room-temperature yield strength up to 50 ksi. In 1977, Section III Appendix G added a requirement to obtain fracture-toughness data for at least three heats (base metal, weld metal, and heat-affected zone) if the KIR curve is used for ferritic steels with specified minimum room-temperature yield strength between 50 and 90 ksi. The three-heat data requirement has not changed when the lower bound curve was adopted by Section XI, or when the lower-bound crack initiation toughness curve was changed from the dynamic Kir curve to the static KIc curve during the 2000s. Based on the accumulation of fracture-mechanics data of ferritic steels with specified minimum yield strength between 50 ksi and 90 ksi and their use for Class 1 pressure vessel production, Section XI recently expanded the applicability of the KIc curve to SA-508 Grade 2 Class 2, SA-508 Grade 3 Class 2, SA-533 Type A Class 2, and SA-533 Type B Class 2 whose specified minimum room-temperature yield strength is 65 ksi or 70 ksi. This paper describes the technical basis including the fracture-mechanics data to support the expansion of the applicability of the KIc curve by ASME Section XI.

The Sobrato Early Academic Language (SEAL) Model Research and Evaluation Final Report is comprised of three sets of studies that took place between 2015 and 2019 to examine the effectiveness of the SEAL Model in 67 schools within 12 districts across the state of California. Over a decade ago, the Sobrato Family Foundation responded to the enduring opportunity gaps and low academic outcomes for the state’s 1.2 million English Learners by investing in the design of the SEAL Model. The SEAL PreK–Grade 3 Model was created as a whole-school initiative to develop students’ language, literacy, and academic skills. The pilot study revealed promising findings, and the large-scale implementation of SEAL was launched in 2013. This report addresses a set of research questions and corresponding studies focused on: 1) the perceptions of school and district-level leaders regarding district and school site implementation of the SEAL Model, 2) teachers’ development and practices, and 3) student outcomes. The report is organized in five sections, within which are twelve research briefs that address the three areas of study. Technical appendices are included in each major section. A developmental evaluation process with mixed methods research design was used to answer the research questions. Key findings indicate that the implementation of the SEAL Model has taken root in many schools and districts where there is evidence of systemic efforts or instructional improvement for the English Learners they serve. In regards to teachers’ development and practices, there were statistically significant increases in the use of research-based practices for English Learners. Teachers indicated a greater sense of efficacy in addressing the needs of this population and believe the model has had a positive impact on their knowledge and skills to support the language and literacy development of PreK- Grade 3 English Learners. Student outcome data reveal that despite SEAL schools averaging higher rates of poverty compared to the statewide rate, SEAL English Learners in grades 2–4 performed comparably or better than California English Learners in developing their English proficiency; additional findings show that an overwhelming majority of SEAL students are rapidly progressing towards proficiency thus preventing them from becoming long-term English Learners. English Learners in bilingual programs advanced in their development of Spanish, while other English Learners suffered from language loss in Spanish. The final section of the report provides considerations and implications for further SEAL replication, sustainability, additional research and policy.
