Cultural Economies of Locative Media examines the manifold ways that location, location-awareness, and location data have all become familiar yet increasingly significant parts of our mobile-mediated experiences of everyday life. The book explores the complex of interrelationships that mutually define the new business models and economic factors that emerge around and structure locative media services, their diverse social uses and cultures of consumption, and their policy implications and impacts. It offers a detailed, in-depth account of how location-based services, such as GPS-enabled mobile smartphones and associated applications, are socially, culturally, economically, and politically produced and shaped, as much as technically designed and manufactured. The result is a rich, composite portrait of locative media in all its cultural economic complexity.

Within the United Kingdom, the general practitioner (GP) will manage the care of the majority of patients with life-limiting and terminal disease. The need for effective communication is recognized in the general practice curriculum and college examinations. The opportunity to review and critique one’s own communication skills allows considerable opportunity for self-directed learning and reflection. The development of a reflective portfolio of learning has been developed as a user-friendly and cost-effective way for the general practitioner to commit to lifelong learning in the context of communicating with palliative care patients. This chapter describes several models that can help deliver an evidence-based template of training, supported by a simple toolkit with which to empower GPs to enhance their communication skills throughout their professional careers.

Relativity is a set of remarkable insights into the way space and time work. The basic notion of relativity, first articulated by Galileo, explains why we do not feel Earth moving as it orbits the Sun and was successful for hundreds of years. We present thinking tools that elucidate Galilean relativity and prepare us for the more modern understanding. We then show how Galilean relativity breaks down at speeds near the speed of light, and follow Einstein’s steps in working out the unexpected relationships between space and time that we now call special relativity. These relationships give rise to time dilation, length contraction, and the twin “paradox” which we explain in detail. Throughout, we emphasize how these effects are tightly interwoven logically and graphically. Our graphical understanding leads to viewing space and time as a unified entity called spacetime whose geometry differs from that of space alone, giving rise to these remarkable effects. The same geometry gives rise to the energy?momentum relation that yields the famous equation E = mc2, which we explore in detail. We then show that this geometric model can explain gravity better than traditional models of the “force” of gravity. This gives rise to general relativity, which unites relativity and gravity in a coherent whole that spawns new insights into the dynamic nature of spacetime. We examine experimental tests and startling predictions of general relativity, from everyday applications (GPS) to exotic phenomena such as gravitomagnetism, gravitational waves, Big Bang cosmology, and especially black holes.

Prassl, Jeremias. The Innovation Paradox. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198797012.003.0005.

This chapter turns to the innovation narrative. It argues that, as far as work is concerned, gig-economy innovation is a myth. The software and hardware on which apps and platforms draw are often the direct result of truly revolutionary innovation and breakthroughs, from GPS locators and the Internet to powerful processors that fit into the palm of your hand. This is the innovation paradox: contrary to the industry’s claims, the underlying business model is anything but novel, as illustrations ranging from nineteenth-century homework in the ‘sweated trades’ to dock labour in the early twentieth century demonstrate. The gig economy is but the latest (and perhaps the most extreme) example of labour market practices that have been around for centuries, with low-skilled tasks instead of complex jobs, powerful intermediaries controlling large workforces, and hybrid arrangements between open market and closed hierarchies replacing the traditional binary contract of employment.

Annotation:
