he study is devoted to the professional and social activities of the outstanding Russian dentist, associate professor Zakhar Borisovich Piryatinsky. The paper presents an analysis of hard-to-reach literary sources and statements of contemporaries about Z.B. Piryatinsky. The data on the formation of Z.B. Piryatinsky as a dentist, his professional activities during the First World War and the Great Patriotic War, in the battles near Lake Khasan and the Khalkhin-Gol River, as well as in the Soviet-Finnish (winter) war of 1939—1940. His role in the opening of the Odontological Society, the first state dental laboratory at the Palace of Labor, the Institute of Public Dentistry, the dental laboratory in the center of Leningrad, which was reorganized into the Central Dental Polyclinic, then into the Scientific and Practical Dental Institute, and later — the Leningrad Dental Institute, was noted. In the conclusion, it is noted that, being one of the founders of domestic dentistry, as well as the school of dentists and maxillofacial surgeons, he is rightfully recognized as one of the patriarchs of national healthcare.

Background: Goal-Oriented Learning (GOL) pedagogy might increase dental students' skill to achieve desired public health goal. Purpose: The objective of this study is to assess the effectiveness of GOL system in terms of increasing knowledge retention as method of curriculum delivery in comparison to traditional lecture method and to explore the perceptions and experiences of students and tutors in regards to GOL system. Method: The study was conducted among all the 2nd year BDS, Sapporo Dental College using Quasi-Experimental design. Intervention and control group were taught using GOL and lecture based method, respectively. SAQ type questions were used to assess the level of knowledge before and after intervention in both groups. Students and tutors perceptions and experiences were evaluated using modified course experience questionnaire and tutor response questionnaire. Result: Level of good score and mean knowledge score differences between pre-test and post-test were more observed in GOL group. These differences found are statistically significant. Though most of the students of GOL system perceived that it contributes in developing their generic skill like improving problem solving, analytic and expression skill, majority of them reported that workload was heavy on them. Most of students were satisfied relating to tutor role, facilities available and evaluation system in GOL group. Overall satisfactions were superior in GOL groups in comparison to lecture group among both students and tutors. Conclusion: The study showed that GOL system significantly improves knowledge retention in comparison to traditional lecture system. Moreover, majority of students and tutors gave more positive feedback regarding GOL experience and consider it superior than lecture-based system. In this article, the authors analyze the Government On-line (GOL) initiative launched by the federal government of Canada in the winter 2000. The primary objective of GOL is to allow Canadians and non-Canadians to access public information and deal with the federal government via a single Web portal. The authors argue that GOL is not a simple technological change and that its designers will have to deal with many organizational issues and challenges in order for the project to succeed. The most important issues are: integration of services difficulties, necessary structural changes, insuring performance and accountability, organizational identity issues, security and human resources skills.

Toll roads are public roads that are part of the road network system and as national roads, for which users are required to pay tolls. The existence of toll roads is very important in the smooth flow of traffic along with the increasing amount of traffic caused by the increase in the number of vehicles and the condition of arterial road pavements that have been damaged (wavy and cracked) at several locations on the road and congestion that occurs due to damaged roads. damaged. The benefits of toll road operations are to influence regional development and economic improvement, as well as increase mobility and accessibility of people and goods, also provide benefits to users in the form of saving vehicle operating costs (BOK) and time compared to passing through non-toll roads, as well as providing returns on investment, maintenance, and toll road development for the Business Entities involved. One form of cooperation between the government and the private sector is the construction of the Pasuruan-Probolinggo (Paspro) Toll Road. Through the Toll Road Business Entity (BUJT) PT. Trans-Java Paspro Toll Road, the government cooperates in the construction of a 31 km toll road. PT. Trans-Java Paspro Toll Road received a 45-year concession to operate the toll road. The purpose of this study was to determine the investment feasibility of the Pasuruan-Probolinggo Toll Road based on the investment feasibility parameters of Net Present Value (NPV), Benefit Cost Ratio (B/C Ratio), Internal Rate Return (IRR), Payback Period (PBP), and determine the length of time. payback period (Payback Period) Pasuruan-Probolinggo Toll Road, and get a comparison of Vehicle Operating Costs (BOK) between Toll Roads and Arterial Roads. The final result of the analysis obtained that the NPV value was negative Rp. -1,773,803,000,000, and the IRR value is 9.56%, which is smaller than WACC = 13.07%, and the BCR value is less than 1.00, which is 0.763 so that it can be seen that the investment is not financially feasible for investors. However, BEP < 45 years concession period is April 2043, so it can be seen that it is still in the feasible category. The Vehicle Operational Cost (BOK) for arterial roads is Rp. 3,647/km for Goal I, Rp. 6,413/km for Gol II, Rp. 9,498/km for Gol III, Gol IV, and Gol V. Meanwhile, BOK for toll roads and added toll tariffs of Rp. 3.226/km for Goal I, Rp. 6,767/km for Gol II, Rp. 7,763/km for Gol III, Rp. 8.113/km for Gol IV and Rp. 8,463 for Gol V. From the analysis it is known that the cost of passing through the toll road is cheaper than going through the arterial road for all vehicle classes and is certainly very beneficial for toll road users.

Responses to school shootings nationwide have been varied. While prevention and intervention have been a primary focus for many public schools, healing through faith has been less communicated in the public. Many survivors and stakeholders have publicly ridiculed overtly spiritual responses to school shootings that minimize action needed to address the issue, citing that policy change and improved safety precautions in schools are the primary ways in which change will occur. However, multiple recent suicides of individuals who experienced the effects of a school shooting, suggest that healing from trauma should also be a main priority after a school shooting. This study explores the role of faith and religion with trauma intervention in the aftermath of school shootings. The article uses case study data to discuss the methods by which faith can be a resource for healing from trauma after school shootings.

BackgroundUlcerative colitis (UC) is the most common form of inflammatory bowel disease in the UK. UC can have a considerable impact on patients’ quality of life. The burden for the NHS is substantial.ObjectivesTo evaluate the clinical effectiveness and safety of interventions, to evaluate the incremental cost-effectiveness of all interventions and comparators (including medical and surgical options), to estimate the expected net budget impact of each intervention, and to identify key research priorities.Data sourcesPeer-reviewed publications, European Public Assessment Reports and manufacturers’ submissions. The following databases were searched from inception to December 2013 for clinical effectiveness searches and from inception to January 2014 for cost-effectiveness searches for published and unpublished research evidence: MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, The Cochrane Library including the Cochrane Systematic Reviews Database, Cochrane Controlled Trials Register, Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effects, the Health Technology Assessment database and NHS Economic Evaluation Database; ISI Web of Science, including Science Citation Index, and the Conference Proceedings Citation Index-Science and Bioscience Information Service Previews. The US Food and Drug Administration website and the European Medicines Agency website were also searched, as were research registers, conference proceedings and key journals.Review methodsA systematic review [including network meta-analysis (NMA)] was conducted to evaluate the clinical effectiveness and safety of named interventions. The health economic analysis included a review of published economic evaluations and the development of a de novo model.ResultsTen randomised controlled trials were included in the systematic review. The trials suggest that adult patients receiving infliximab (IFX) [Remicade®, Merck Sharp & Dohme Ltd (MSD)], adalimumab (ADA) (Humira®, AbbVie) or golimumab (GOL) (Simponi®, MSD) were more likely to achieve clinical response and remission than those receiving placebo (PBO). Hospitalisation data were limited, but suggested more favourable outcomes for ADA- and IFX-treated patients. Data on the use of surgical intervention were sparse, with a potential benefit for intervention-treated patients. Data were available from one trial to support the use of IFX in paediatric patients. Safety issues identified included serious infections, malignancies and administration site reactions. Based on the NMA, in the induction phase, all biological treatments were associated with statistically significant beneficial effects relative to PBO, with the greatest effect associated with IFX. For patients in response following induction, all treatments except ADA and GOL 100 mg at 32–52 weeks were associated with beneficial effects when compared with PBO, although these were not significant. The greatest effects at 8–32 and 32–52 weeks were associated with 100 mg of GOL and 5 mg/kg of IFX, respectively. For patients in remission following induction, all treatments except ADA at 8–32 weeks and GOL 50 mg at 32–52 weeks were associated with beneficial effects when compared with PBO, although only the effect of ADA at 32–52 weeks was significant. The greatest effects were associated with GOL (at 8–32 weeks) and ADA (at 32–52 weeks). The economic analysis suggests that colectomy is expected to dominate drug therapies, but for some patients, colectomy may not be considered acceptable. In circumstances in which only drug options are considered, IFX and GOL are expected to be ruled out because of dominance, while the incremental cost-effectiveness ratio for ADA versus conventional treatment is approximately £50,300 per QALY gained.LimitationsThe health economic model is subject to several limitations: uncertainty associated with extrapolating trial data over a lifetime horizon, the model does not consider explicit sequential pathways of non-biological treatments, and evidence relating to complications of colectomy was identified through consideration of approaches used within previous models rather than a full systematic review.ConclusionsAdult patients receiving IFX, ADA or GOL were more likely to achieve clinical response and remission than those receiving PBO. Further data are required to conclusively demonstrate the effect of interventions on hospitalisation and surgical outcomes. The economic analysis indicates that colectomy is expected to dominate medical treatments for moderate to severe UC.Study registrationThis study is registered as PROSPERO CRD42013006883.FundingThe National Institute for Health Research Health Technology Assessment programme.

INTRODUCTION:Although many biologics (Bs) have been approved for the treatment of moderate-to-severe Ulcerative Colitis (UC) in patients who have responded inadequately to conventional therapy, the selection of Bs is controversial due to the lack of head-to-head trials. Indirect economic comparisons of these costly drugs are available from National Healthcare perspectives that are not the Italian ones. Therefore, the objective is to evaluate cost-utility of Bs for the treatment of refractory moderate-to-severe UC both in Italy and in the Lombardy Region.METHODS:A Markov model (considering three transition states: remission, clinical response, relapse) was constructed using the software R 3.3.1 markovchain-package to evaluate incremental cost-utility ratios (ICUR) of adalimumab (ADA), infliximab (IFX), infliximab biosimilar (IFX-B), golimumab (GOL) and vedolizumab (VED) treatments of patients over a 10-year time horizon from the perspective of the Italian (N) and Lombardy Region (R) healthcare system. Clinical parameters were derived from clinical trials. Costs (actualized by – 1.5 percent) were obtained from the National database and Regional public tender. Utility was expressed as QALY (Quality-Adjusted Life Years).RESULTS:Costs per treatment were different from a N and R perspective (ADA -55 percent; IFX -16.7 percent; IFX-B -29.6 percent; GOL -9.6 percent; VED -10 percent). Direct healthcare costs (treatment cost, visits, laboratory tests, hospital admissions) were calculated over 10 years of treatment per patient: ADA (N: EUR114,227, R: EUR68,314, -40.2 percent), IFX (N: EUR130,595, R: EUR103,081, -21 percent), IFX-B (N: EUR110,438, R: EUR78,852, -28.6 percent), GOL (N: EUR118,602, R: EUR96,922, -18.3 percent), VED (N: EUR113,852, R: EUR102,932, -9.6 percent) with associated QALY respectively of 6.68, 6.66, 6.66, 6.70, 7.02. From a N perspective, IFX-B was dominating compared to all other treatments. The ICUR of VED/IFX-B was EUR9,483 for 10 years (willingness to pay EUR948/QALY). From a R perspective, ADA was dominating compared to all other treatments. The ICUR of VED/ADA was EUR101,818 for 10 years (Willingness to Pay, WTP EUR10,182/QALY).CONCLUSIONS:National and Regional cost-utility analyses produced different results. As Regional price discounts can occur, local analysis is needed to estimate the economic impact of therapies to ensure optimal choice.

Annotation:
Occupational stress among teachers is a painful, prevalent and costly phenomenon, one which impacts on individuals, families, schools and wider society. A growing body of evidence suggests that individuals' susceptibility to occupational stress is not determined exclusively by environmental or personality factors, but by the cognitive and behavioural transactions between the individual and potentially stressful events. Two major factors which contribute to individual stress are a person's appraisal of events as threatening or demanding, and the strategies they use in coping with those events. The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship between experience, stress levels and coping patterns in a group of primary school teachers. Two groups of teachers were surveyed, 'Starters' who were in their first year of teaching and 'Stayers' who had at least 10 years of teaching experience. Stayers were divided, on the basis of their responses, into Low-stress, Moderate-stress and High-stress groups. The aspects of coping which were explored are: 1. The range of coping strategies used by teachers in each group, 2. The frequency of use of those coping strategies for each group, and 3. The coping styles preferred by teachers in each group. The results of this study show no direct connexion between stress level and any of the demographic variables (sex, age, religion, piety, teaching experience, full-time teaching, part-time teaching and time away from teaching). Nor are significant differences found between the coping patterns of more or less experienced and more or less stress teachers. A pattern is suggested by correlational analysis, wherein inexperienced teachers (Starters) and highly-stressed experienced teachers (High-stress Stayers) show the same preference for coping styles. It is hypothesized that this similarity of preference relates to role of control in reducing stress, and that these groups are examples of different stages of adaptation to teaching. Implications for the use of these preferences in detecting teacher stress, and for the inclusion of coping strategies in teacher training are discussed.

A package intervention, consisting of daily-adjusted goal setting, e-mail feedback, and graphic feedback, was used in a public school attendance office to increase the efficiency with which 3 attendance clerks documented student attendance. During the intervention phase, the attendance secretary set a daily goal for each attendance clerk. This goal was a percentage of student absences to be coded and entered in the school computer program. After establishing a daily goal, the attendance secretary provided daily feedback, in the form of a written e-mail response and graphed feedback to each clerk. If the subjects had attained their daily goal, the attendance secretary also delivered a praise statement along with the e-mail feedback. Results indicated that the intervention package was ineffective in producing change in the attendance clerks' absence coding behavior.

The problem in a Northeastern district is that African American (AA) males need enhanced support in the high school to improve college readiness thereby strengthening access and the opportunity for college success. The purpose of this study was to gather educators' and adult AA males' perspectives of the influence of connectedness, perception, and self-valuation. Using McClelland's need achievement theory as the conceptual framework, the study focused on educators' perspectives of college readiness and AA males' perceptions of goal-valuation, academic self-perceptions, motivation, and attitudes related to teachers and college readiness. This qualitative case study included interviews with 6 administrators and 1 focus group of 7 educators; all selected at the high school level. Additionally, 64 adult AA males completed the School Attitude Assessment Survey-Revised (SAAS-R). Data were analyzed by using the matrix approach to organize patterns and themes. An analysis of the findings revealed that teacher-student relationships are critical to promote learning, and lessons plans should reflect creativity and understanding of how to support male AA student learning. Themes from findings were promoting student engagement in the classroom setting, developing academic skills to be successful in the classroom setting, using instructional strategies with students, and academic preparation prior to the transition to college. A 3-day college and career readiness professional development project was developed for educators to promote effective college readiness for this population. Through the implementation of these strategies, educators will strengthen college readiness for AA males, thereby promoting improved access and opportunity for college success.

In this study, the aim was to investigate the effects of the web-based internet search scaffolding tool (WISST) on the improvement of metacognitive skills of 7th grade students associated with their goal orientation. This study utilized a static-group pretest-posttest design. The first experiment group received web-based metacognitive scaffolding tool treatment
the second experiment group received teacher-based metacognitive scaffolding
and the control group had no scaffolding. The designed tool aimed to scaffold users throughout web searching by emphasizing certain metacognitive skills improvement. Three main instruments were used to gather data: metacognition inventory for Internet search (MIIS), patterns of adaptive learning scale (PALS), and achievement test. 76 7th grade elementary school students in Ankara, Turkey participated in this study. The data gathered from the participants were analyzed through quantitative and qualitative data analysis methods. The results of the study indicated that WISST tool helped students improve certain metacognitive skills including monitoring, planning, controlling, and strategy generation. Its unique effectiveness was on the improvement of controlling skills. Teacher scaffolding group was also successful in improvement of strategy generation skills. No effects of goal orientations on the improvement of metacognitive skills were found in the analyses. Within hierarchical regression models, only pre-MIIS scores significantly contributed to the model. Students having less improved metacognitive skills were found associated with less trials and less visits. Students having poor performance work grades were tended to copy-paste more, try less, and visit less. Task difficulty and task type was observed to influence the search patterns of students. Search patterns and reflections also indicated that scaffolded groups made positive difference in search patterns.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Gold mining in South Africa is an industry that is more than a century old. The impact of gold mines on communities and the environment are enormous. This thesis is a case study based in one of the major gold producers in South Africa that has been in operation for more than 50 years and has more than 30 years of life still left. Exploring the impact mining has had on communities and the environment, this thesis is a call for leadership action towards sustainable futures. This call is made through a suggested sustainable development leadership framework. Georgius Agricola gave a warning regarding the devastating environmental impacts of mining as early as 1556, however mining still has the same negative impacts to the environment and people. The argument in this thesis is that, it is only through genuine leadership that the impacts of mining can be mitigated. However leadership is looked at not from the position of the leader or the leadership style but from the belief system of the leader when it comes to environmental management and community development. The motivation for the study was based in observing how leadership at our Gold mine rallied behind prevention of mine closure when the mine was faced with electricity crisis in 2008. The electricity crisis demonstrated that it is through genuine and committed leadership that all challenges can be overcome including sustainable development crisis. The call for leadership at our mine is to demonstrate the same leadership commitment in addressing environmental and community development challenges. The literature review begins by highlighting sustainable development global challenges and initiatives to address them. This is followed by impacts of gold mining on society and the environment around the various regions of the world. Leadership belief systems are then discussed, highlighting, how belief systems influence the way a leader responds to environmental issues. In developing the sustainable development leadership framework findings from observations, conversations, interviews and focus group discussion that were conducted throughout the mine are presented. The aim of the research was to determine the understanding of employees on the impact of our company on communities, environment and themselves and also the employees’ opinions of leadership. The findings were that the majority of employees believe that leadership is not genuine in addressing community, employee safety and health, and environmental issues at our company and through interviews with leadership, the findings are that, environment and community issues are done for compliance and reputation purposes with no genuine belief that they should be done. To address this understanding a call to leadership is made through a suggested sustainable development leadership framework that takes into consideration the findings from the case study. The thesis ends by proposing that this suggested framework should be tested further within our company.

The education sector can be seen as a cornerstone of today's society, an organization that is under constant change and evolve as society. The compulsory school system is of significant role in society that places high demands on its management. The following study investigates the requirements for documentation in primary school organization and operations, and how these requirements are perceived and affect the school's organization and activities of the study carried out at different levels of the organization so as to get an overall picture of its impact.   In order to analyze and create understanding of the results, the study applies the theory of New Public Management and various reforms that can be linked to the increased documentation requirements and its influence in the public administration. Study results show that there is a mixed picture of the documentation impact on the school system. Shown are both positive and negative effects of the documentation requirements. It also becomes clear that there is a connection between the theory and the increased documentation requirements.

The purpose of the study was to investigate relationships among 7th grade students&rsquo
personal goal orientations, perceptions of classroom goal structure, and learning related variables of efficacy, self-handicapping strategies, cheating behavior, and science achievement. This study was carried out during 2006-2007 spring semester at 12 public elementary schools in Keç

ren, Ankara. A total of 1950 seventh grade students from 62 classrooms participated in the study. Data were collected through Patterns of Adaptive Learning Scales and Science Achievement Test. Hierarchical Linear Modeling (HLM) analyses were conducted due to the nested structure of data. Results revealed that students who demonstrated high efficacy, high science achievement, low cheating behavior, and low self-handicapping strategies, which were all adaptive learning patterns, had higher mastery goal orientations. Findings regarding performance-approach goal oriented students, focusing on demonstrating their ability, however, were not as straightforward. Performance approach goals were associated with high efficacy and high demonstration of cheating behavior. Class level analyses, on the other hand, revealed that students&rsquo
perception of the classroom goal structure was a significant predictor of personal goal orientations they adopted. While learning environments emphasizing understanding of the material and self-improvement promoted students&rsquo
adoption of mastery goals
learning environments focusing on performance and relative ability of students promoted students&rsquo
adoption of performance-approach goals. The current study, thus, demonstrated the influence of goal structure of the learning environment on students&rsquo
personal goal orientations which in turn found to be related with various learning related variables.

This study investigated the effects of grade level and gender on elementary school students&rsquo
motivation towards science learning. This study was carried out during 2007-2008 fall semester at 12 public elementary schools in Yenimahalle districts of Ankara. A total of 2231 students (1121 boys, 1093 girls, 17 did not report their gender) participated in the study. In terms of grade level, 1164 were enrolled in 6th grade level and 1055 in 8th grade (12 did not report their grade level). Data were collected through Students&rsquo
Motivation Towards Science Learning Questionnaire (SMTSL). Two-way Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) was conducted in order to identify the effects of grade level and gender on six dimensions of motivation (i.e. self efficacy, active learning strategies, learning environment stimulation, science learning value, achievement goal and performance goal) towards science learning. Two-way MANOVA results showed that grade level and gender had a significant effect on the collective dependent variables. Follow-up univariate analysis indicated that there was a significant difference between 6th and 8th grade students&rsquo
motivation towards science learning regarding mean scores on each motivational variable. In addition, mean scores on each motivational variable, except leaning environment stimulation, were significantly different for boys and girls, in favors of girls. Result demonstrated that students&rsquo
motivation towards science learning declined as the grade level increased and girls had a higher motivation towards science learning than boys.

AbstractThe goal of this article is to analyse the impact of specific public policies on the school trajectories of socially vulnerable Ciganos (Gypsies/Roma) who reside/live in the Metropolitan Areas of Lisbon and Porto. Through carrying out qualitative research, the analysis of key factors will allow us to understand the reasons behind school continuity and educational success of Ciganos, as well as the identity (re)configuration processes associated with the education paths of these individuals. We find that trajectories are not only intertwined with public policies and programmes, but also with other explanatory factors inherent to the individual, to the type of support he/she receives from his/her family, the presence of key figures in their lives, and the importance of peers and institutional factors inherent to the way public schools operate.

AbstractResearch on and knowledge about the Greenlandic school system is primarily based on quantitative, evaluative measures, such as grade point statistics. Though the aforementioned research is centred around schooling there is a lack of pedagogical research on schooling based on the voices of students and knowledge about what happens inside classrooms. This chapter describes the findings from a survey study of students’ experience of public schooling in Greenland. The goal of the study is to identify students’ perceptions of schooling and lessons and to broaden available knowledge on what schooling is in Greenland.

Chapter 2 examines how the four schools distinguished themselves from public schools, a distinction that helped them establish what was essential (or fundamental to their identity) about their own communities and their politics. The chapter also establishes some of the debates about what was “accidental” (or not fundamental to their identity) in the schools. It then turns to how the schools engaged broader questions of politics, especially how both conservative Protestants and Muslims felt excluded by the United States, with Protestants feeling the rest of the nation had forgotten America’s “Christian identity” and Muslims feeling a mix of hope and discouragement that they might be accepted as just another American religion. In discussions of both public schools and politics, community members described essential differences between themselves and the rest of the world, and they expressed frustrations that outsiders disagreed with them about which differences were essential and which were accidental.

This chapter explores the various dimensions of the professional life of an Archaeological Survey of India’s Superintendent of Archaeology ranging from conserving monuments to undertaking field work, from dealing with antiquities in the field to engaging with village and city folk, bureaucrats and politicians. Unlike university men and women, such government people were public archaeologists in the sense that they dealt with all kinds of grass roots challenges that monument administration and research involved. Deshpande’s early years in different parts of Maharashtra and Karnataka was centrally of this type, with the conservation of Gol Gumbad being a professional landmark. About a decade after this, his conservation work at another renowned medieval complex, Delhi’s Qutb Minar would earn the Archaeological Survey laurels. It was also during these years that Deshpande’s abiding obsession with shrines and monasteries in the Western rock-cut caves began and included work at Bhaja, Pitalkohora, Ajanta and Ellora where apart from making new discoveries, he also undertook extensive conservation work.

Abstract We Americans have subjected ourselves to many a public conjunction of religion and sex. First came the Moral Majority in 1979, the rise of the Religious Right, and the minting of family values as the new currency of politics. Religious and moral values were invoked by Supreme Court justices in 1986 when they decided that homosexual sodomy was not entitled to constitutional privacy. Since the Defense of Marriage Act became federal law in 1996, religious authority has been called upon by social conservatives as they attempt, state by state, to legislate an exclusively heterosexual definition of marriage. Opposition to sex education in public schools has become a key organizational point for the Religious Right, which often establishes school boards as its local base. Abortion and gay rights remain the social issues in regard to which religious groups are most politically visible and have become ideologically (if not logically) linked with the whole agenda of religious conservatism, from school prayer to reduced taxation and diminished government. In the 1990s teen pregnancy and single motherhood in general have been invested with tremendous social significance and, particularly with the Personal Responsibility Act of 1996, remanded to the special care of “faith-based” organizations.

Abstract This paper describes methods and theories used to alter the attitudes and motivation of the 83,000 students of the New Orleans Public School system. The project attempts to affect systemic change in the study of science, mathematics, engineering and technology via development of a motivational and informational video series from live presentations at target schools. The city of New Orleans and the New Orleans Public School system are demographically 75% and 85% African-American, respectively, and there is an overwhelming need to expose the students to role models beyond athletes and entertainers. The author has developed a comprehensive program to assist the New Orleans Public School system in developing motivation and fostering positive attitudes toward education, in general, and the study of science, math, engineering and technology, in particular. The program’s goal and vision are to convince students that they can be whatever they choose with math, science, engineering and technology as possible alternatives, presenting career opportunities well into the next century by developing the whole individual into a motivated, critical thinking human being with the ability to make life-sustaining decisions. The videos are based on successful theories and presentations the author has developed and presented. Students at target schools are pre- and post-tested to determine the presentations’ effectiveness. The videos are aired continuously on community and educational access channels across the city, reaching over 300,000 homes. Furthermore, a presently functional web site whereby students receive additional information and resources in the all areas of education including science, math and engineering complements the video series.

Sustainable mobility implies the use of modes of transport that have less negative impact on the environment, but at the same time encourage a healthier way of life, reduce traffic accidents and facilitate access to transport for all levels of society. Educating school children about sustainable mobility is a necessary step in preparing new generations for a responsible attitude towards mobility and the environment. This work aims to analysed the effectiveness of two selected methods of educating school children about sustainable mobility. The "Traffic Snake game " aims to educate children, as well as their parents and teachers, and change their behaviours in terms of choosing sustainable ways of moving, while the main goal of the "Sugioka" game is to educate school children about sustainable mobility and the benefits of public transport. Research conducted in several Belgrade elementary schools in 2017 and 2023 showed that there is a significant potential for educational activities to change mobility patterns in favor of sustainable modes of travel.

All across the United States, all year round, children play with soccer goals. The average age of children who interact with goals ranges from 5 to 18 years of age; although many adults utilize soccer goals as well. In most instances the goal is located at a public park or school. This requires the goals to be moveable. The portability of the goal is to allow for storage, grounds keeping and game placement — to name a few. This requirement dictates that the goal be light weight enough to be moved by the people using it, or the entity which controls it. Therefore, an unrestrained, light-weight goal can easily become unstable and tip over. Many of these goals are unsafe because they are improperly designed, manufactured or installed (unstable and are either unanchored or not properly anchored or counter balanced). A U-10 soccer goal has been designed and built which is light weight, portable and is stable with or without anchors. This design is passive in nature. That is to say it is always working and does not rely on stakes or sandbags; however, stakes are part of this design.

Global Learning Charter Public School (GLCPS) is an urban secondary school located in the city of New Bedford, Massachusetts. GLCPS educates students in grades 5–12. It is a Title I school with over 74% of the student population on free and reduced lunch. Historically, only 60% of students graduating from New Bedford move on to postsecondary education. It is the goal of our school to change this and increase the number of students entering post secondary education and more specifically to increase their interest in STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math) fields. GLCPS provides a unique educational experience where students demonstrate academic excellence and mastery of essential skills. These skills include: technology literacy, public speaking, global citizenship and arts exploration. Incorporation of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics) is a continued goal for our school. After attending teacher educator training/professional development in engineering-based learning (EBL), we decided to create a robotics course, which fully embedded EBL into the curriculum. The goal of this robotics course is two fold: 1) Combine engineering, math, science, and art/creativity into one course; and 2) engineering-based learning can impact the way students learn STEAM principles, retain STEAM theory, and apply them to real world, relevant applications. The purpose of this paper is to illustrate how engineering-based learning inspired and impacted the development of a robotics course in an urban, financially disadvantaged, secondary charter school. Specifically, we detail how the principles and tools of the engineering-based learning pedagogy affected the development and implementation of this robotics course. Lastly, we will demonstrate how EBL and the robotics course have changed student perceptions of science, engineering, and math.

At present, more than 50% of children live in big cities. But with the increasing number of motor vehicles and shrinking public spaces , children have less and less opportunities for outdoor activities, resulting in obesity and sub-health problems. Therefore, it is very important to build children-friendly public spaces in metropolis. This study takes the Shanghai, china as an example.Firstly, through questionnaires,it is found that ensuring the safe movement of children and inspiring their spontaneous activities are key points to build children-friendly public spaces. Meanwhile, The public spaces near the home are the most used environment by children. Therefore, open spaces in metropolis areas need to be planned carefully for children near their homes. Then it is way much better to make sure children's places of daily life, such as homes, schools, green spaces, sports venues and so on, can be connected in a safe path. Secondly, for building the safe path for children ,the safety of each spot along the path is analyzed by SP method, which is a mathematical algorithm , in order to find the risk factors and to avoid them in the future. Then we establish the action plan of "line space + point space" to build the children-friendly urban public space system. Line space refers to meeting the basic safety space needs of children through the improvement of the routes to school, including reducing the impact of motor vehicles, safe road facilities, and enhancing road lighting system. "Point space" refers to the promotion of children's outdoor activities through the arrangement of multi-level outdoor children's playgrounds and green spaces, including safe green parks, security platforms and so on. Finally, it is hoped that the "Safety Line Space + Interesting Point Space" plan will establish a safe and inspiring path for children to travel, linking home, school, green space and sports venues, which they use mostly in their daily life. Then we can ensure the safe movement of children and inspire children's spontaneous games in big cities for a children-friendly goal

This CREID Policy Briefing provides recommendations to address the discrimination and marginalisation faced by the Shabak community in the Nineveh Plains in Iraq. Shabak women in Iraq live within a tribal, religious and patriarchal society. Priority is given to men in terms of education, employment, public life, personal freedom and inheritance. This means that, while all Shabak people have suffered from years of conflict and marginalisation as a religious minority group, women and girls face particular forms of intersectional discrimination. Today more Shabak women go to school and university, and participate in political processes, but these developments have not been consistent or comprehensive for all Shabak women.

Early Childhood Interventions (ECI) are ideally designed to achieve a series of mutually reinforcing objectives with the overarching goal of helping to improve equality of opportunity for children in poverty. In this discussion the authors analize programs targeted to overcome some or all of the cognitive, emotional, and resource limitations that may characterize the environments of disadvantaged children during the first several years of life. Section II of this paper presents a review of findings that attempt to measure the short-term or immediate benefits of early childhood interventions. Section III reviews the literature that addresses the longer term benefits of early childhood interventions, such as program participants' improved school performance and earnings opportunities in later years, and a reduced probability for program participants to later engage in criminal or violent acts. Section IV summarizes the economic rationale for public support of ECI programs. In the final Section V we address some of the policy and operational issues involved in designing and implementing early childhood intervenion programs.

Hartley, Curtis, und Allyson Kelley. Lessons in Critical Race Theory. Allyson Kelley & Associates PLLC, April 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.62689/hgzcul.

Racism and discrimination are the root causes of health disparities in our world. Most schools of public health fail to address these issues. Critical Race Theory (CRT) is a viable framework for exploring how racial bias is reinforced at various levels in our society and how privilege differs based on race. Health promotion pedagogy informed by CRT and social justice can be an opportunity to explore relationships, social cohesion, and promote health equity. This paper describes and explores how an undergraduate/graduate public health instructor and students at the University of North Carolina Greensboro presented materials and speakers that influenced how students perceived racism and discrimination as a public health problem. Students learned about perspective, privilege, and positionality during guest interviews throughout the class. Excerpts of student essays presented in this paper demonstrate how college health courses like this one can transform, change, heal, and connect students with a world that dismantles racism and promotes health equity and justice for all. Teaching public health and social justice requires a different teaching approach and unique content developed in an authentic way from individuals with lived experience of social justice issues. Elevating CRT as a framework and giving voice to the historically minoritized and marginalized must be the goal of transformative pedagogy in health promotion. Now is the time.

Pritchett, Lant, und Martina Viarengo. Learning Outcomes in Developing Countries: Four Hard Lessons from PISA-D. Research on Improving Systems of Education (RISE), April 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.35489/bsg-rise-wp_2021/069.

The learning crisis in developing countries is increasingly acknowledged (World Bank, 2018). The UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) include goals and targets for universal learning and the World Bank has adopted a goal of eliminating learning poverty. We use student level PISA-D results for seven countries (Cambodia, Ecuador, Guatemala, Honduras, Paraguay, Senegal, and Zambia) to examine inequality in learning outcomes at the global, country, and student level for public school students. We examine learning inequality using five dimensions of potential social disadvantage measured in PISA: sex, rurality, home language, immigrant status, and socio-economic status (SES)—using the PISA measure of ESCS (Economic, Social, and Cultural Status) to measure SES. We document four important facts. First, with the exception of Ecuador, less than a third of the advantaged (male, urban, native, home speakers of the language of instruction) and ESCS elite (plus 2 standard deviations above the mean) children enrolled in public schools in PISA-D countries reach the SDG minimal target of PISA level 2 or higher in mathematics (with similarly low levels for reading and science). Even if learning differentials of enrolled students along all five dimensions of disadvantage were eliminated, the vast majority of children in these countries would not reach the SDG minimum targets. Second, the inequality in learning outcomes of the in-school children who were assessed by the PISA by household ESCS is mostly smaller in these less developed countries than in OECD or high-performing non-OECD countries. If the PISA-D countries had the same relationship of learning to ESCS as Denmark (as an example of a typical OECD country) or Vietnam (a high-performing developing country) their enrolled ESCS disadvantaged children would do worse, not better, than they actually do. Third, the disadvantages in learning outcomes along four characteristics: sex, rurality, home language, and being an immigrant country are absolutely large, but still small compared to the enormous gap between the advantaged, ESCS average students, and the SDG minimums. Given the massive global inequalities, remediating within-country inequalities in learning, while undoubtedly important for equity and justice, leads to only modest gains towards the SDG targets. Fourth, even including both public and private school students, there are strikingly few children in PISA-D countries at high levels of performance. The absolute number of children at PISA level 4 or above (reached by roughly 30 percent of OECD children) in the low performing PISA-D countries is less than a few thousand individuals, sometimes only a few hundred—in some subjects and countries just double or single digits. These four hard lessons from PISA-D reinforce the need to address global equity by “raising the floor” and targeting low learning levels (Crouch and Rolleston, 2017; Crouch, Rolleston, and Gustafsson, 2020). As Vietnam and other recent successes show, this can be done in developing country settings if education systems align around learning to improve the effectiveness of the teaching and learning processes to improve early learning of foundational skills.

The goal of this project was to explore how explicit instruction in spatial reasoning in primary grades can contribute to reductions in variation in STEM outcomes for low-income, minority students in the Chicago Public Schools (CPS). Our project focused on the persistent gender, racial and ethnic, and socioeconomic inequalities in STEM educational and career achievement and attainment. Our approach to addressing this problem was guided by research evidence that much of the variation in STEM outcomes for these groups can be explained by spatial reasoning abilities. Importantly, spatial reasoning skills can be improved through practice, but are rarely explicitly taught in the classroom. The spatial reasoning needs and opportunities identified by this work are relevant to CPS in that they focus on the prevalent science, math, and computer science curricula currently used in CPS K-2 instruction. As such, our findings provide specific, actionable guidance for the development of curricular supports that infuse explicit spatial reasoning instruction.

Bangladesh has made remarkable progress in achieving over 90% primary enrollment with significantly improved gender parity. Its focus has now shifted from universal primary education towards the quality of education and improvements in teaching outcomes. In order to meet this goal, the government has turned to the merits that EdTech can offer and is implementing a blended learning approach that integrates both digital and physical elements, and balances creative and logical aspects to strengthen its progress and address Bangladesh’s current educational challenges. In partnership with EdTech Hub, this Spotlight contributes to identifying EdTech innovations that have a great potential to be scaled and are being impactfully implemented in the context of Bangladesh and beyond, to directly address and support the learning needs of children, as well as supporting education stakeholders such as educators, parents, and communities coming from varying social and economic backgrounds. We sought a range of hi- to low-tech solutions, encompassing everything from SMS-based technologies and game-based learning to school management systems. These innovations target various educational stakeholders, including teachers, students, and administrators. This Spotlight also demonstrates how private and public sector players fit in the EdTech innovation ecosystem.

This paper highlights the case of MUVA Assistentes, a public works programme (PWP) that provided training and mentoring to young vulnerable women (YVW) in urban Mozambique. Our paper draws out the main learnings from the MUVA Assistentes project to inform the design of other PWPs that have women’s empowerment as their major aim. We show through our analysis that it is possible for PWPs to achieve women’s empowerment, but only if they go beyond a sole focus on income provision through paid work to women. Instead, we argue that if PWPs formulate their theory of change in line with Kabeer (1999)’s notion of empowerment, with its three interrelated dimensions (resources, agency and achievements), women’s empowerment through PWPs can be both realistic and long-lasting. PWPs have always been popular in low- and middle-income countries as tools for poverty alleviation and mitigating high unemployment rates among young people. Given the disproportionate impact of poverty on women and girls, many existing PWPs often include a ‘gender’ component in their theories of change. A common limitation of such PWPs and theories of change is their overarching focus on providing income opportunities, which they suggest leads to women’s empowerment. However, this has not been the case for most PWPs; hence, learnings from a project that has led to substantive empowerment of young women are highly valuable. The MUVA Assistentes project was a component of the broader MUVA Programme running in urban Mozambique. It provided training to YVW and gave them paid work as classroom assistants in primary schools for one academic year. The project addressed two major problems plaguing Mozambique today: (1) high unemployment among urban young people, especially women; and (2) poor educational outcomes among primary school students. Through a dedicated focus on mentoring the participants, the project supported these women to build soft assets and skills to enable them to realise their future goals and aspirations. This paper highlights that the MUVA Assistentes project led to three major outcomes: (1) building technical skills; (2) improving opportunities for women’s employability in the labour market (while improving public goods); and (3) building soft assets through training and mentoring. Through a close discussion of the experiences of four women participants, we find that the MUVA Assistentes led to an increase not only in income opportunities for YVW, but also in their sense of self‑worth and confidence to exercise their agency in achieving their goals. Further, the project also provided a critical public good by working towards improving the quality of classroom outcomes in government primary schools. We conclude that through building these skills and increasing women participants’ self-worth, PWPs can build women’s resources, agency and achievements, thereby moving closer to achieving a holistic view of empowerment, which encouragingly extends beyond the PWPs’ duration as well.

This document is a compilation of materials that at least appear to be reflective of one or more states’ views on international legal issues pertaining to the actual or possible use of algorithmic and data-reliant socio-technical systems in armed conflict. In September of 2018, the Harvard Law School Program on International Law and Armed Conflict (HLS PILAC) commenced a project titled “International Legal and Policy Dimensions of War Algorithms: Enduring and Emerging Concerns.”[1] The project builds on the program’s earlier research and policy initiative on war-algorithm accountability. A goal of the current project is to help strengthen international debate and inform policymaking on the ways that artificial intelligence and complex computer algorithms are transforming war, as well as how international legal and policy frameworks already govern, and might further regulate, the design, development, and use of those technologies. The project is financially supported by the Ethics and Governance of Artificial Intelligence Fund. In creating this compilation, HLS PILAC seeks in part to provide a resource through which the positions of states with divergent positions on certain matters potentially of international public concern can be identified. Legal aspects of war technologies are more complex than some governments, scholars, and advocates allow. In the view of HLS PILAC, knowledge of the legal issues requires awareness of the multiple standpoints from which these arguments are fashioned. An assumption underlying how we approach these inquiries is that an assessment concerning international law in this area ought to take into account the perspectives of as many states (in addition to other relevant actors) as possible.
