Design libraries in Germany are characterized by their generally extremely specialized collections dedicated to aspects of product and graphic design. These libraries are frequently located in institutions which concern themselves with a wide range of design-related subject areas, such as design centres, universities, and museums, or else they exist as special collections in large libraries. This distribution of design libraries amongst very different institutions also means that they reach a very wide spectrum of users. Librarians working in design libraries have formed a loose network known as the Initiative der Design-Bibliotheken.

All librarians come face to face with design every day in their interaction with a library building, its furniture, and its equipment. Librarians in design libraries are in addition concerned with information, about and for designing. The library of the German Design Council constitutes the most comprehensive collection of design information available to the public in the former Federal Republic, and is complemented by a photo and slide archive, including company literature and a newly-established video collection. Although no use is made of modern information technology, user-friendly information services, including a periodicals indexing service in the form of cards which are also available to external subscribers, are provided. However, the dissemination of design information further afield is constrained by three factors. In the first place, designers themselves do not fully appreciate how libraries can help them. Secondly, there is little co-ordination in Germany of design libraries of different kinds and in different regions and administrative units. Thirdly, most German design libraries are insufficiently resourced to allow them to do more than fulfil a specific function within the context of an institution or a locale. Nonetheless, librarians of German design libraries have formed an action group and have taken the first steps towards working together, while the German Design Council’s publication Design Bericht (1989) has provided a directory of design institutions. Design Bericht will appear every two years; a similar publication encompassing the whole of Europe is envisaged. (A full English version follows the original text in German. The study of practical experience of the project activities of the libraries of the Federal Republic of Germany in the field of promoting library as a reading centre is relevant at the present stage of formation of digitalization society. Problems associated with the reduced motivation to read are manifested in one way or another in social and economic spheres, therefore the importance of promotion of reading at the national level is recognized in many countries. It resulted in the development of national programmes on support of reading. Despite the fact that all libraries in the world perform one common function — the development of reader competence and sustained interest in obtaining set of knowledge through reading, the experience of using the forms and methods of this activity is extremely wide. The purpose of the article is to study the trends in the promotion of books and reading in the libraries of Germany for the possible adaptation of examples of specific activities in the libraries of our country. Getting acquainted with international experience allows identifying common and special features in the practice of library activities in Russian Federation and Germany, to determine the achievements and to point out the problems in a broader context. The system of librarianship management in Germany and the typology of German libraries are similar in many respects to the structure of this sector in the Russian Federation, which is an important reason for the possibility of adapting the experience in the domestic librarianship. The author analyzes the primary sources in German, presented on the websites of libraries and on the pages of professional library journals of the Federal States of Germany. The article considers the experience of working with the target groups of children, young adults, families with children, refugees and migrants. The author describes the national reading program Lesestart 1-2-3, popular forms of promoting reading: “Knowledge Box” (Wissensbox), “Book Cinema” (Bilderbuchkino) and Kamishibai. The article emphasizes that reading aloud is a unique tool, undeservedly forgotten by our libraries. Research by German librarians, psychologists and educators testifies that reading aloud not only promotes imagination, creativity and empathy, but also influences educational opportunities. The author concludes that book and reading promotion events held in the libraries of the Federal Republic of Germany can be used as experience in a number of Russian libraries, considering the specific conditions.

The paper presents for the first time the analysis of the main aspects of multicultural library work in Russia and the Federal Republic of Germany, based on the data of questionnaire survey conducted by the author in the libraries of two countries. The author considers the terminology used by modern Russian and German libraries in the course of work with migrants. The paper gives definitions and shows the difference in approaches to the use of terms “intercultural library work”, “polycultural library service” and “multicultural library service”. The author reveals that both Russian and German libraries do not mostly maintain statistical records on migrant users. The paper compares the data indicating insufficient knowledge on the interests of readers with migration background. The author revealed institutions of different levels providing statistical data that use the libraries of two countries to analyze the ethnic groups living in the library service area and to clarify the demographic and social characteristics of individual migrant groups. The paper highlights the forms of upgrade qualifications for librarians involved in the development and provision of multicultural services. The survey shows that the important characteristic of German librarians who work with multicultural users is their belonging to a group of migrants. Based on the data obtained, the author concludes that work with migrants in Russia and Germany is mainly funded from the general budget of the library. The author identifies the sources of targeted funding for multicultural work in libraries, as well as the approximate size of the budget allocated for the acquisition of collections for migrants. The paper considers the forms of acquisition and criteria for selecting documents in the languages of migrants. The author presents the comparison of the main forms of mass work with migrants in the libraries of Russia and Germany, as well as identifies the activities that are not held in Russian libraries, but are of interest from the point of view of implementation in the domestic practice.

This article is going to give an overview of the continuously developing world of standardised data and its use in German cultural institutions. It will provide an introduction into Germany’s federated library system and explain how libraries developed standardised data more quickly than other cultural heritage institutions. We argue that this head-start in using and creating standardised data means that museum librarians are best suited to support both their institutions and others, which want to implement standardised data. They can also take an ambassadorial role for standardised data produced from the museum environment, because museum librarians have the professional background to ensure the quality of such data.

PurposeThis paper aims to describe the development and current situation of electronic document delivery by public libraries in Germany, taking into account the impact of the changing regulatory framework of German copyright law and the consequences of law suits against libraries and Subito.Design/methodology/approachThe paper describes the current situation. Also, the new licensing strategy of the Subito delivery service and the national licensing strategy for electronic media of German libraries and the German Research foundation come into focusFindingsThe negative development of copyright law posed a new challenge for document delivery services in Germany since the statutory licence in German copyright law no longer covers electronic document delivery provided by Subito and other library document delivery services. Licence agreements with publishers or intermediaries such as copyright clearance centres are now necessary to allow delivery of electronic documents. These negotiations have proven to be very complex and controversial, but now a complicated framework of licence agreements has been concluded and will enable German libraries to generally provide electronic documents in the future. DRM‐systems, however, still are a challenge for customers and the delivery service.Practical implicationsDemand of delivery services has decreased and may decrease even more in the long run due to availability and direct accessibility of electronic documents, together with the national licensing program in Germany.Originality/valueThe paper provides a concise summary and gives an impression of the development of document delivery services of German libraries between 2003 and 2008 with special reference to the legal position and changes to German copyright law.

This master’s thesis studies library teaching at two university libraries, Freie Universität Berlin in Germany and Södertörn University in Sweden. The aim of this paper is to study views on information literacy, how these views affect teaching practice, and how the teaching of information literacy is connected to, on the one hand, German and Swedish learning culture and, on the other, the local community of practice at the studied university libraries. The theories applied in this paper are learning culture and community of practice as developed in the works of Judith Ricken and Etienne Wenger. The methods that have been used are qualitative, semi-structured interviews that were conducted at both university libraries. It was observed that the teaching practices were highly connected to learning cultures. While library teach-ing at Freie Universität Berlin’s university library focuses mostly on concrete practical knowledge, the develop-ment of general competencies is the most important part at Södertörn University library. The community of practice at Freie Universität Berlin’s university library is quite clearly delimited and concentrated on core com-petencies like knowledge about databases and reference organizers. At Södertörn University library the more cross-border community of practice includes even non-traditional library work like academic writing as a teach-ing subject. This is a two years master’s thesis in Archive, Library and Museum studies.

Taking as its starting point the short-comings of reading as a topic of research for social questions that reach beyond the didactic of learning to read, the present dissertation attempts to approach this subject from another vantage point. The focus of interest is not how many people read what subject matter, in what fashion, and why, but rather its opposite: How do social systems define 'reading', what persons are assigned the role of 'reader' and what are the motivations that this social distinction engenders or promotes. The theoretical foundation for the study is based on the Bielefeld school of systems theory as expounded by Niklas Luhmann. Through an analysis of editorial articles appearing over a period of forty years in the journals 'Börsenblatt für den Deutschen Buchhandel' and 'Buch und Bibliothek [Bücherei und Bildung]', the theoretical model is demonstrated by examples drawn from book-trade and the public library system. In the process it becomes apparent that the culture of reading as a product of a traditional system is fundamentally instrumentalized by the book-trade: inwards for the purpose of identity and market protection, outwards for the purpose of soliciting special national concessions, in particular in the area of antitrust law. In spite of its proximity to book-trade, the public library system all but failed to address reading culture in the decades of 1960s and 1970s and made use of other persuasive media as a means of system stabilization. Only after considerable budgetary cuts during the recession at the start of the 1980s did the public library system couple itself to the culture of reading as a medium of persuasion for soliciting state benefits.

Master thesis called "Teenage Girls as a Specific User Group in Libraries" is focusing on users of a library between the ages of 12 - 19 years and on the design of library space for this age group. The theoretical part of the thesis aims to provide the everyday library practice with the basis for creating space for teens, including marketing, staff, services and collections. The theoretical part also focuses on the physiological, psychological, emotional and sociological characteristics of teenage girls. The situation in the Czech Republic is also introduced. With regard to the fact, that the library services and spaces for the teenagers in the Czech Republic are at their very beginnings, the examples from abroad, Germany in particular, are introduced. The practical part is realized by means of a questionnaire survey and interviews. The practical part focuses on existing and potential users of the Municipal Library in Prague, where the new space for teens should be established in a near future. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)

Almanacs are one of the most characteristic subgenres of early modern and modern popular print. One of the keys of their persistence was their ability to evolve over time, which led, among other things, to the publication of almanacs for children. The latter, randomly preserved in libraries and archives, are still largely unexplored by both book historians and scholars of children’s literature. After a brief introduction on the history of almanacs, the chapter describes the contents and materiality of selected examples of almanacs for children from a range of European countries (Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Spain), printed between 1750 and 1900. By placing these items in the sociocultural context in which they were issued, the chapter attempts to understand the strategies put in place by international authors and publishers.

AbstractModern software architectures are becoming increasingly complex and interdependent. The days of exclusive in-house software development by companies are over. A key force contributing to this shift is the abundant use of open source frameworks, components, and libraries in software development. Over 90% of all software products include open source components. Being efficient, robust, and affordable, they often cover the non-differentiating product requirements companies have. However, the uncontrolled use of open source software in products comes with legal, engineering, and business risks stemming from incorrect software licensing, copyright issues, and supply chain vulnerabilities. While recognized by a handful of companies, this topic remains largely ignored by the industry and little studied by the academia. To address this relevant and novel topic, we undertook a 3-year research project into open source governance in companies, which resulted in a doctoral dissertation. The key results of our work include a theory of industry best practices, where we captured how more than 20 experts from 15 companies worldwide govern their corporate use of open source software. Acknowledging the broad industry relevance of our topic, we developed a handbook for open source governance that enabled practitioners from various domains to apply our findings in their companies. We conducted three evaluation case studies, where more than 40 employees at three Germany-based multinational companies applied our proposed best practices. This chapter presents the highlights of building and implementing the open source governance handbook.

Domain-overarching system models are crucial to investigate sector coupling concepts. Specifically, the coupling of building and electrical energy systems becomes crucial to integrate renewable energy sources such as photovoltaic power systems (PV). For such interdisciplinary simulation models, Modelica is a suitable language. However, most open-source Modelica libraries are either domain-specific or lack simple-to-parameterize PV models. We close this gap by developing a PV model for the IBPSA Modelica library. The model comprises two I-V-characteristic models and three mounting-dependent approaches to calculate the cell temperature. The I-V-characteristic models follow a single- and two-diodes approach. This study uses measurement data from a rooftop PV system in Berlin, Germany, for validation. The focus lies on comparing the implemented single- and two-diodes approach. Results prove that both models accurately calculate the modules’ DC power output and cell temperature. The two-diodes approach slightly outperforms the single-diode one at the expense of a higher parameterization effort.

The fully fashion knitting is an actual solution for producing two-dimensional shapes, appropriate to the desired finished garment structure, with minimal or no cutting, being one of the most efficient technology. The knitting programs can be processed using the automatic specialized software, developed worldwide by various machine builders. Among them, the M1plus(R) software from Stoll GmbH Germany, offers programs for creating completely new shapes or available libraries for customizing the existing shapes. The paper focuses on the presentation of the opportunities offered by the Shape Sizer program, as interactive package for designing and tailoring the shapes for online or offline training. The user can exploit the flexible features of this package, concerning the type of the knitwear product, with all structural and shape particularities. There are a variety of different shapes available, from the pullover to the single shapes, cardigans or slip overs. The programmer accesses the library choosing the knitting technology type, fully fashion or knit and wear, and then all the details regarding the panel sizes, stitch densities, narrowing or widening steps, are set-up. The program allows the grading of the panels in all dimensions, facilitating thus the further manufacturing steps. The high quality of the final product is ensured by the shaping details on the linking between the constituent parts and the binding off in the sleeves. Working with software existing libraries is a significant simplification of the programming process, as the user does no need to build all the base patterns every time a new design or machine type is required. More, for the personal training and self assessment, the off line versions are extremely useful, allowing the learner to study in his personal rhythm and environment.
