The article raises the problem of the metadisciplinary interpretation of the term “genre”, which can be equally well defined as a nomadic concept or as an artistic universal. The author focuses on the question of the configuration of features defining the concept of genre in philology, art history, and musicology. Taking as a basis the general aesthetic principles of genre specification – functional, thematic, and structural – the author analyzes their genre-forming potential in various artistic forms and comes to the conclusion that understanding genre as a communicative and formally meaningful category provides an interdisciplinary dialogue, but at the same time, genre dominants can be different. For speech genres, such a dominant is a communicative goal, for painting genres – a subject content. The semantic parameter of the genre is interpreted in a similar way in literary criticism and musicology. The division into primary and secondary genres is a common feature for both philology and musicology. The structural parameter includes compositional features and elements of genre style, and the specific weight of this parameter is especially high in canonical (protoliterary and literary) and primary musical genres. The meaning of the structural features of the genre is inversely proportional to the visualization of an artistic form. This parameter is least significant for the genre identification of a painting.

This paper presents a case for a genre-based approach to research into online communication. Questions about the appropriateness and extensiveness of research-based guidelines for communicating online exist. These questions include the appropriateness of transferring guidelines from research on print communication online without first re-verifying them, the appropriateness of generalizing conclusions from context-based, small sample-sized usabilty studies, the extent of generalizability of empirical studies, and the limited scope of guidelines that focus almost exclusively on physical features of text. Genre – ‘a familiar pattern, a way of organizing information that has become so common that readers will probably recognize each new instance as belonging to the genre’ (Price & Price, 2002:272) – provides an alternative, contextually-based approach. It is a useful context because most online communication occurs within the confines of a specific genre and, as genres become more common, users develop expectations about the type of content presented and the format of its presentation. Three methods can help researchers understand the nature of online genres: (1) discourse analysis helps researchers identify the features of a genre, (2) usability studies help researchers assess whether the features promote effective user performance (and, if so, how), and (3) design team research identifies why features were included and which other alternatives were considered, rejected, and why. An effective study of genre uses all three. Focusing on genre, too, allows researchers within sub-disciplines of communication to focus their work on their areas of specialty.

"Some peculiarities of genre interaction are considered (based on the symphonic creativity of a modern Ukrainian composer – Yevhen Petrychenko). It was found out that the symphony genre is open to various interactions, resulting in complex genre hybrids that allow the symphony to realize all its potential and extend the “life” of the genre. It has been proved that the awareness of the peculiarities of the genre hybrid is possible only at the level of seperate works and is situational. Two types of interactions that characterize genre hybrids are identified. This is an equal combination of genres, which is reflected in the genre name and the superiority of one genre with the scattered manifestation of the characteristics of other genres. It was revealed that Symphony No.1 “Requiem” by Petrychenko demonstrates the first type of genre interaction, because it combines genre features of symphony, suite, requiem and quartet, in which the dominant genre role is played by symphony, features of other genres are sporadic and subordinate to laws of symphony genre. The first chamber symphony also belongs to the first type of genre interaction, but shows minimal influence of other genres, due to the complexity of the chamber symphony genre. At the same time, in the Symphony “Antitheses” the genres of symphony, cantata and vocal cycle interact, which is reflected in the genre denotation (vocal symphony), principles of development, form and drama of the work. The prospects of research of genre hybrid forms open ways to the comprehension of features of modern academic music. Keywords: symphony, genre hybrid, genre interaction, the symphonic creativity of Yevhen Petrychenko, Ukrainian music, modern academical music. "

AbstractBased on Bhatia’s multi-dimensional analytical framework for discourse analysis, we explore key issues involved in genres construction such as private intention, manipulation of generic value and interdiscursive strategies. Two prefaces and two book reviews by expert linguists were collected and analyzed at great length from both text-internal and text-external perspectives. Meanwhile, four professionals from relevant disciplines were interviewed for their insights into the issues investigated. Through examining textual features, covert interdiscursivity and narrative accounts of the professional writers, the following findings are generated. 1) Generic variation occurs within and between the two genres due to expert writers’ intentional manipulation of generic value. 2) Interdiscursive strategies like “genre embedding”, “genre bending” and “genre mixing” are exploited by expert writers to achieve their particular private intention. Specifically, preface genre can be presented, to some extent, as a research article mixed with some promotional flavor, and features of research article genre, promotional genre and introductory genre are found mixed in the review genre. 3) Representations of the preface and book review genres such as linguistic feature, move structure and interdiscursivity are ultimately affected by generic value, authors’ private intention, professional practice and disciplinary culture. The findings have important implications for ESP/EAP writing practitioners and learners.

Film music varies tremendously across genre in order to bring about different responses in an audience. For instance, composers may evoke passion in a romantic scene with lush string passages or inspire fear throughout horror films with inharmonious drones. This study investigates such phenomena through a quantitative evaluation of music that is associated with different film genres. We construct supervised neural network models with various pooling mechanisms to predict a film’s genre from its soundtrack. We use these models to compare handcrafted music information retrieval (MIR) features against VGGish audio embedding features, finding similar performance with the top-performing architectures. We examine the best-performing MIR feature model through permutation feature importance (PFI), determining that mel-frequency cepstral coefficient (MFCC) and tonal features are most indicative of musical differences between genres. We investigate the interaction between musical and visual features with a cross-modal analysis, and do not find compelling evidence that music characteristic of a certain genre implies low-level visual features associated with that genre. Furthermore, we provide software code to replicate this study at https://github.com/usc-sail/mica-music-in-media. This work adds to our understanding of music’s use in multi-modal contexts and offers the potential for future inquiry into human affective experiences.

Music Genre Classification is one of the interesting digital music processing topics. Genre is a category of artistry, in this case, especially music, to characterize and categorize music is now available in various forms and sources. One of the applications is in determining the music genre classification on folk songs and dangdut songs. The main problem in the classification music genre is to find a combination of features and classifiers that can provide the best result in classifying music files into music genres. So we need to develop methods and algorithms that can classify genres appropriately. This problem can be solved by using the Support Vector Machine (SVM). The genre classification process begins by selecting the song file that will be classified by the genre, then the preprocessing process, the collection features by utilizing feature extraction, and the last process is Support Vector Machine (SVM) classification process to produce genre types from selected song files. The final result of this research is to classify Indonesian folk music genre and dangdut music genre along with the 83.3% accuracy values that indicate the level of system relevance to the results of music genre classification and to provide genre labels on music files as to facilitate the management and search of music files.

The article focuses on the theoretical disclosure of basic concepts on the problem of pedagogical communication of future primary school teachers, the peculiarities of language genres. The teacher's ability to organize work in the classroom largely determines the performance of pedagogical interaction. First, the teacher uses typical speech organization models - speech genres. It is noted that the pedagogical speech genre is a historically established unit of professionally oriented communication, which is characterized by a special communicative task, a certain content, methods of speech and the expected reaction of the interlocutor, as well as an environment that allows the language concept to be fully realized. Some approaches of scientists on the definition of the concepts of «pedagogical communication», «genre of speech», «speech genre», classification of genres are presented. It is emphasized that a competent choice of language means, mastery of all genres of pedagogical speech testifies to the language competence of the teacher. Any genre is a complex model that includes several components. The choice of each of the genres is based on the implementation of the task of language pedagogical communication, which was set by the teacher. The participation of future teachers in the construction of pedagogical discourse will help them in the future to independently build a model of any pedagogical or social phenomenon in accordance with the norms of cultural activities.

This change of medium is connected both to the length of these films, and using language, narration and genre features typical of feature films. What is important, Švankmajer does not adjust his artistic visions to all the directives of a certain genre. Rather, the director chooses some elements of these genres, and creates new, hybrid qualities. Genres that have the biggest impact on his feature films are: horror, comedy, and speculative fiction.

The article is devoted to the analysis of the rhythm of texts of different genres: fiction novels, advertisements, scientific articles, reviews, tweets, and political articles. The authors identified lexico-grammatical figures in the texts: anaphora, epiphora, diacope, aposiopesis, etc., that are markers of the text rhythm. On their basis, statistical features were calculated that describe quantitatively and structurally these rhythm features. The resulting text model was visualized for statistical analysis using boxplots and heat maps that showed differences in the rhythm of texts of different genres. The boxplots showed that almost all genres differ from each other in terms of the overall density of rhythm features. Heatmaps showed different rhythm patterns across genres. Further, the rhythm features were successfully used to classify texts into six genres. The classification was carried out in two ways: a binary classification for each genre in order to separate a particular genre from the rest genres, and a multi-class classification of the text corpus into six genres at once. Two text corpora in English and Russian were used for the experiments. Each corpus contains 100 fiction novels, scientific articles, advertisements and tweets, 50 reviews and political articles, i.e. a total of 500 texts. The high quality of the classification with neural networks showed that rhythm features are a good marker for most genres, especially fiction. The experiments were carried out using the ProseRhythmDetector software tool for Russian and English languages. Text corpora contains 300 texts for each language.

The study is based on the following principles of the theory: all communication phenomena can be described through their primary or secondary nature; any speech genre has a field structure. A field consists of a core represented by features opposing this genre to other genres, and periphery represented by shared features. Field features of a genre are represented by language units of different levels grouped around some invariant content which depends on the topic and aim of communication. We have built a field model of speech genre of advertising of elite brand goods in Instagram, where the core features are word-play, highly expressive vocabulary and allusions which all aim to create positive image of elite goods. The field periphery has been split into closer periphery (common for all e-advertising) and farther periphery (represented by features common for advertising in general). The features of closer periphery are instant, ubiquitous and interactive nature. The features of farther periphery are informative and evaluative character, inducement and creolized nature.

Automatic sentence segmentation of spoken language is an important precursor to downstream natural language processing. Previous studies combine lexical and prosodic features, but can impose significant computational challenges because of the large size of feature sets. Little is understood about which features most benefit performance, particularly for speech data from different speaking styles. We compare sentence segmentation for speech from broadcast news versus natural multi-party meetings, using identical lexical and prosodic feature sets across genres. Results based on boosting and forward selection for this task show that (1) features sets can be reduced with little or no loss in performance, and (2) the contribution of different feature types differs significantly by genre. We conclude that more efficient approaches to sentence segmentation and similar tasks can be achieved, especially if genre differences are taken into account.

Writing and genre scholarship has become increasingly attuned to how various nontextual features of written genres contribute to the kinds of social actions that the genres perform and to the activities that they mediate. Even though scholars have proposed different ways to account for nontextual features of genres, such attempts often remain undertheorized. By bringing together Writing, Activity, and Genre Research, and Multimodal Interaction Analysis, the authors propose a conceptual framework for multimodal activity-based analysis of genres, or Multimodal Writing, Activity, and Genre (MWAG) analysis. Furthermore, by drawing on previous studies of the laboratory notebook (lab book) genre, the article discusses the rhetorical action the genre performs and its role in mediating knowledge construction activities in science. The authors provide an illustrative example of the MWAG analysis of an emergent scientist’s lab book and discuss its contributions to his increasing participation in medical physics. The study contributes to the development of a theoretically informed analytical framework for integrative multimodal and rhetorical genre analysis, while illustrating how the proposed framework can lead to the insights into the sociorhetorical roles multimodal genres play in mediating such activities as knowledge construction and disciplinary enculturation.

The article describes the genre-creating elements that have become basis for systematization of the genre composition of horror literature. Special attention is paid to the typology of characters, the specifics of the arranging artistic time and space, as well as the features of the emotional impact on the reader as one of leading principles of genre classification of this type of fiction. After all, much of the text of the works of representatives of horror literature is devoted to the construction of artistic space and time, in order to introduce the recipient into a certain range of components of the emotional state during reading, to achieve the goal of horror literature. Namely, to scare the reader. Considerable attention is paid by the authors of this type of literature to the modeling of characters as a genre component. The article describes a set of standardized elements and attributes describing the appearance and character of the characters, which creates a "horizon of expectations" for the reader's perception. It also acts as an element of genre differentiation within the cluster of horror literature. The definition of genre varieties of this type of fiction reveals a clear conditionality of the specifics of the reception, the orientation of the author's intentions to create a certain psychological effect. Established artistic constants, which show a fairly high level of variability, serve as a figurative and plot matrix for the authors, which provides a "recognizability" of the genre addressed to a certain readership.

Popular science, for instance, is a broad register carrying several specific purposes within it, suggesting that there are several genres of popular science, but it is unclear what these genres are. This paper introduces a linguistic approach to reveal hidden genres. For 600 written popular science texts from a variety of sources and disciplines, linguistic features were analysed using a range of computer programs and a cluster analysis conducted. The analysis produced four clusters with shared linguistic features, representing text types. The association of these text types with key features, functional relations, dominant sources, and prototypical members of each cluster helps us to induce genres on the basis of communicative purposes, a traditional criterion in identifying genres. Whether the produced text types are equivalent to genres was evaluated with a test set of data. The proposed approach achieves more than 70 % accuracy. The approach appears applicable for identifying genres of popular science and has pedagogical implications.

This study evaluated the narrative and expository English writing corpus from 20 Chinese English learners at three linguistic levels: the use of literate words (elaborated noun phrases, conjunctions, adverbs, and mental state verbs), the degree of sentence complexity, and the use of subordinate clauses (nominal, adverbial and relative clauses). Results first showed a genre effect on literate word use but not on utterance length and clausal density. Specifically, there were more elaborated noun phrases and conjunctions in expository texts, but more adverbs in narrative texts. Results also revealed a genre effect on the use of relative clauses but not on other clauses. Finally, a strong correlation between literate word use and the production of complex syntax was found after controlling for the effects of genre. These results highlight the need for genre-dependent writing instruction to make students aware of the different language resources expected across genres as specific contexts of communication.

Drawing on these findings, we develop the concept of genre repertoire to designate the set of genres enacted by groups, organizations, or communities to accomplish their work. Automatic discourse classification according to genre in social information sharing, transfer and knowledge communication provides a higher level of service quality. By investigating user behavior in movie community, the relationship between intertextuality of discourse genre and user behavior was studied. We denoted genre by using vector, and discourse genre intertextuality intensity is measured with vector distance. And for those discourse which genre is unknown, genre intertextuality is calculated using user behavior. The results show that user various behaviors stickiness in movie community and discourse genre intertextuality intensity have potential common features.

Professor of the Leningrad State Conservatory composer Feodosy Antonovich Rubtsov (1904-1986) entered the history of Russian musicology as the author of the original concept of the structure of scales of folk songs. The scientist formulated main positions in monographs “Intonation Relations in the Songs of Slavs” (1962) and “The principles of mode construction in Russian Folk Songs” (1964). Comprehension of the concept of “genre”, the definition of genre features of traditional folk songs is a little-known side of Rubtsov’s scientific heritage. The study of archival documents (in particular, the transcripts of the report “Principles for Determining Genres of Folk Songs”, which was made in 1966 at the Leningrad department of the Union of Composers at the scientific conference “Theoretical Problems of Musical Forms and Genres”) shows that the scientist formulated a number of positions that were relevant for the 1960–1970. “Genre” is a genus and species concept, multi-level concept. The main criterion for determining the genre is the function, the stylistic features and the type of form are important too. Rubtsov noted that the genre system of folklore is capable of renewal, and the characteristic property of the genres of musical folklore lies in their ability in a certain context to act as a function of another genre

Web genre plays an important role in focused crawling, web link analysis, and contextual advertising. In this paper, web genre is defined as the functional purpose and the information type contained in the website. The intelligent classification of web genre can predict the content and functional type of website. However, there are several critical challenges to solve the web genre classification problem: lack of web genre classification dataset and efficient web genre classification mechanism. To improve web genre classification performance, we crawled Chinese websites of different web genres and converted crawled data into a hierarchical multilabel classification dataset. A website knowledge graph is constructed based on the relationship of website and meta tag features. Using entity features extracted from the knowledge graph, we propose an online web genre classification model based on hierarchical multilabel classification (OWGC-HMC) to mine the functional purpose of the corresponding website. Experimental results show that our OWGC-HMC model can mine hierarchical multilabel structure of web genre and outperform other web genre classification methods.

In this paper we present an analysis of the suitability of four different feature sets which are currently employed to represent music signals in the context of the automatic music genre classification. To such an aim, feature selection is carried out through genetic algorithms, and it is applied to multiple feature vectors generated from different segments of the music signal. The feature sets used in this paper, which encompass time-domain and frequency-domain characteristics of the music signal, comprise: short-time Fourier transform, Mel frequency cepstral coefficient, beat-related features, pitch-related features, inter-onset interval histogram coefficients, rhythm histograms and statistical spectrum descriptors. The classification is based on the use of multiple feature vectors and an ensemble approach, according to time and space decomposition strategies. Feature vectors are extracted from music segments from the beginning, middle and end parts of the music signal (time-decomposition). Despite music genre classification being a multi-class problem, we accomplish the task using a combination of binary classifiers, whose results are merged to produce the final music genre label (space decomposition). Experiments were carried out on two databases: the Latin Music Database, which contains 3,227 music pieces categorized into ten musical genres; the ISMIR'2004 genre contest database which contains 1,458 music pieces categorized into six popular western musical genres. The experimental results have shown that the feature sets have different importance according to the part of the music signal from where the feature vectors are extracted. Furthermore, the ensemble approach provides better results than the individual segments in most cases. For high-dimensional feature sets, the feature selection provides a compact but discriminative feature subset which has an interesting trade-off between classification accuracy and computational effort.

The aim of the article is to explore of genre and dramaturgic features of a modern historical film. The research methodology is based on the systematic use of materials from the scientific branches of art and cultural science, cinema theory and history, psychology, etc. The empirical basis of the study included a series of historical films of the XXI century, a detailed analysis of genre and dramaturgic features was carried out. The results. Historical drama is the leading genre of a film based on real events, which grinds the past, turning it into a mirror image of the present. Thus, the theme of the film, its newsworthiness has the equal importance along with the genre, which ensures the integrity of the material, director’s and cameraman’s methods and techniques and the style, which forms the aesthetic expressiveness of the film. Films based on real events, which premiered in the XXI century, were chosen as the empirical basis of the study. As the core of the plot were chosen issues of human rights violations, social discrimination and injustice. These problems have their origins in ancient times and have long been the main obstacles for the establishment of democratic values in society. We found that modern historical drama has significant morphological differences from the XX century drama: lack of epicism, abandonment of the tragic component in favor of a happy ending, the transition from melodramatics to hybridization of drama with more dynamic genres: action, road movie, western. At the same time, we see that modern historical drama has signs of genre elasticity and syncretism, which allows forming new multigenre constructions that have not yet entered scientific circulation in the domestic press (action drama, crime drama, western drama, kidnap drama, etc.). The dramatic features of modern historical films are closely related to the genre construction of the films. The genre of autobiography determines the priority of using the “plot of growing up” and “plot of the experience”, when the main characters grow up psychologically and fight for their rights: life, freedom, personal inviolability. The hero — is dominated archetype, a person who serves others, sacrifices himself or puts himself in constant danger for the sake of others. The issue of social inequality in the historical context, when realities separate the viewer from the depicted events for a significant period of time, is reflected in the historical film more often and has a proper response from the viewer. At the same time, the modern issue of human rights, which demonstrates the principle of “democracy for the elect” is not so popular among modern fans of historical cinema. Novelty. The scientific novelty of the article is to identify the modern morphology of historical film, the actualization of the relationship between the genre, the magnitude of the theme of historical film, its dramatic solution and the value expectations of the audience. The practical significance. The main theses and results of the research may be useful for practicing screenwriters of historical films. The recommendations in this article contribute to the creation of a commercially successful and psychologically powerful film product. In addition, the article can be used for academic disciplines in film schools in Ukraine and abroad.

The etude genre is one of the examples characterized by the emergence of different types of music that develop at certain stages of musical art. Although the introduction of studies as an independent genre in musical literature dates back to the XVII-XVIII centuries, its main function in the development of piano art was already present in other musical genres. The next stage in the development of the study genre is related to the work of the Romantic Movement representatives F.Chopin, R.Schumann, F.List. The acquisition of new features of the genre is due to the work of Russian composers. Thus, with the increase in the content features of art-concert studies, new features such as programming and integration with other genres were observed in Russian music. Interest in piano in Azerbaijan in the late 19th and early 20th centuries first appeared in aristocratic strata, but gradually spread to a wider area. The development of the art of performing on the piano also influenced the creativity of the composer an gave impetus to the formation of the national repertoire for this instrument. Although the etude genre in the works of Azerbaijani composers is not common in the works of European and Russian composers, there are important examples only in the early stages of the formation of miniatures. Azerbaijani composers E.Nazirova, F.Guliyeva, A.Azizov, A.Abbasov, Niyazi, J.Hajiyev, R.Shafag, Kh.Mirzezadeh and others managed to create interesting examples of this genre. One of the main features of the analysis of Azerbaijani somposers etudes is that these examples are pioneered for educational purposes. For this reason, some of the studies we analyzed (M.Mirzayev, J.Hajiyev etc.) are aimed at the first stage of music education with its small volume and simple structure. Studies of relatively large artistic and technical complexity (E.Nazirova,Niyazi,F.Guliyeva) are suitable for the upper classes of music schools. Although the evolution of the study genre and the features of its various genres are not embodied in these works with the splendour seen in the works of European and Russian composers, Azerbaijan is an interesting example of piano music in its educational repertoire. As a result, we can say that the etude genre is not a special development stage in the works of Azerbaijani composers, but each of the existing examples is important in the formation of the aesthetic tastes of young pianists, musical performances on a national basis, and it is successfully applied in the educational repertoire.

This article describes genre-forming features of informative documentary texts of military discourse, such as communicative goal, author’s image, addressee’s image, event content, factor of the future, and factor of the past. The following terms are studied here: documentary text, speech genre, and informative speech genres. The documentary text is considered as a kind of а speech genre, realized in writing. In the course of the research, the most frequent informative documents of military discourse (Great Patriotic War period) were selected, i.e. summary, dispatch, and report. Having analysed the definitions of the abovementioned speech genres and the corresponding documentary texts, the author was able to determine their communicative goals, single out the main (inform) and additional (ask, suggest) genre-forming intentions. It was revealed that the speech addressee in informative speech genres can be both an executive officer and a group of persons, information about them (detailed or not) being presented in the initial and final formulas of the document. The author’s image in the main texts of documents is either implicit or manifested with the help of performative verbs. The speech addressee is abstract and is only indicated in the initial formula of the document, in most cases by the person’s position. Informative documents should meet the following requirements: impersonal and multi-event nature, presentation of the informative component by events of the past and the present, creation of a futural perspective in texts with incentive intentions. The analysis of the factor of the past showed that the summary and the analytical report are initiative genres of written communication, while the dispatch and the operations report are reactive speech genres. Having studied the factor of the future parameter, the author concluded that informative speech genres underlie other informative and directive genres. For instance, dispatches and reports are created on the basis of summaries, whose main intention is to inform. The texts of dispatches and reports, having additional intentions of asking and suggesting, form the basis for directive documentary texts.

Tracing the genre modifications of poetry and their common and distinctive features, the author addresses the key features of poetry for children in general: artistic and literary discourse, the functions of poetry, thematic direction, strophic structure of the poem, the existence of images, characters and others. The article proves that the basis for the renewal of poetic genres is traditional genres of folklore and poetry. There are organically updated folk genres in modern poetry for children (praise, scarecrows, fables, nonsense, counters, patter, games) and newly created genres (poetry-pictures, tricks, coloring books, checks, stumbling blocks, therapeutic poems). The search for new forms of expression of idiosyncrasies of artists leads to the emergence of original genres. These have appeared as an original phenomenon in the Ukrainian literature of the early 21st century and offer a wide scope for further research.

Along with the advantages and achievements (the article gives their brief description), the author points to a few critical issues concerning the “questionnaire”: the lack of items of the “questionnaire” (the juxtaposition of primary and secondary speech genres, direct and indirect speech genres, speech and rhetorical genres, cultural characteristics of speech genres, etc. are not presented in it) and its crucial points which are not commonly recognized, i.e. the ranking points of the “questionnaire”. In relation to modern genre studies, the article deals with the items that either should be or can be, or have already been added to the “questionnaire”, as well as the theoretical justification of their relations, which, according to the author of the article, will allow to clarify some other items of the “questionnaire”. Riggs „Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children” is a novel form, which is characterized by genre syncretism, as the genre structure combines features of fantasy, adventure, social novels and oral folklore, thoroughly decorated with philosophical motives. This „universality” is formed due to the relevant themes, issues, eidology, plot and compositional features. „Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children” is a multi-genre novel that combines several genres. The genre of the work can be called a fantastic-social novel-fairy tale, where the philosophical and psychological themes are constant. The author managed to reveal important social and psychological themes within the fantastic chronotope, which is presented by comparing real and unreal time-space. Constant in the novel is the image of the protagonist, who is the narrator, through the perspective of which the story achieves its subjectivity. The novel is characterized by a set of motives: social (war, genocide, inclusion, etc.), existential (meaning of life, existence of personality), psychological (loneliness, soul, loss), socio-historical (war, friendship, love, help), philosophical (good and evil, death, life), etc., which, combined, form a complex and unique artistic world of the novel form.

AbstractEarlier models of the genre of the pesharim have tended either to subsume pesher into the genre of midrash, on the one hand, or to doubt its coherence as a genre due to a perceived lack of common features shared among all the member texts, on the other. Cognitive genre theory offers a way forward by challenging previous conceptions of the way genre categories are formed. Rather than fixed sets of texts belonging equally to a genre, cognitive theory proposes that genres are radial categories extending outward from a “prototypical” center toward a fuzzy boundary, with texts participating in the genre to varying degrees. A cognitive model of the pesher genre provides a flexible enough construction of the genre to account for the variation among the constituent texts, yet still firmly distinguishes the genre from other forms of Early Jewish literature through the concept of the idealized cognitive model (ICM) of reality that animates the genre.

This study takes a novel approach to the study of threatening communications by arguing that they can be characterized as a genre – a genre that generally carries strong connotations of intimidation, fear, aggression, power, and coercion. We combine the theoretical framework of Rhetorical Genre Studies (RGS) with results from theoretical and empirical analyses of threats to arrive at a more comprehensive perspective of threats. Since threats do not form part of any regular curriculum of genres, we designed a survey to test how recognizable they are. While scholars on threats describe threatening communications as remarkably varied in form and contextual features, the majority of our respondents categorized test items as threats without prompts of any kind, indicating that threats are a recognizable genre. We propose that threatening communications belong to a wider category of illicit genres: i.e. genres that generally disrupt and upset society and commonly affect their targets negatively. The uptakes of illicit genres are very different from those of other genres, as the users of the genres often actively avoid naming them, making uptake communities significant shapers of illicit genres. The present study contributes to research on threatening communications, since genre theory sheds light on important situational factors affecting the interpretation of a text as a threat – this is a particularly contentious question when it comes to threats that are indirectly phrased. The study also contributes to genre theory by pointing to new territory for genre scholars to examine, namely illicit genres. Studies of illicit genres also have wider, societal benefits as they shed light on different kinds of problematic rhetorical behavior that are generally considered destructive or even dangerous.

The paper presents a comparative analysis of the syntactic level of promotional language in fiction and academic book blurbs. The overall research objective was to identify salient syntactic features and investigate the similarities and differences in the realization of this text-in-ternal aspect of thriller, romance, and linguistics blurbs in English. The analysis shows that their formulaic language exhibits genre-specific patterns and form-function correlations in its syntactic complexity. In order to provide a positive description of a book, blurb writers regularly employ structural parallelism, ellipsis, complex phrases with multiple modification, phrasal and clausal embedding, coordination, and other means of structural reduction. However, individual instantiations also display systematic variability in text-length values and frequency of salient features, with fiction blurbs mainly replicating the conciseness of spoken language and academic blurbs closely resembling formal written language. We conclude that the generic integrity of these texts involves a degree of controlled flexibility at the syntactic level depending on the book type/genre as the defining variable. Additionally, the research confirms that the study of linguistic profiles of genres is funda- mentally important for the study of language use, both from a theoretical and applied perspective. The increasing ‘generification’ of contemporary language, and particularly English as the global lingua franca, requires the adoption of a multidimensional genre-based framework in investigating the complex linguistic realities of the 21st century.

Abstract This paper presents the Automatic Genre Classification of Indian Tamil Music and Western Music using Timbral and Fractional Fourier Transform (FrFT) based Mel Frequency Cepstral Coefficient (MFCC) features. The classifier model for the proposed system has been built using K-NN (K-Nearest Neighbours) and Support Vector Machine (SVM). In this work, the performance of various features extracted from music excerpts has been analysed, to identify the appropriate feature descriptors for the two major genres of Indian Tamil music, namely Classical music (Carnatic based devotional hymn compositions) & Folk music and for western genres of Rock and Classical music from the GTZAN dataset. The results for Tamil music have shown that the feature combination of Spectral Roll off, Spectral Flux, Spectral Skewness and Spectral Kurtosis, combined with Fractional MFCC features, outperforms all other feature combinations, to yield a higher classification accuracy of 96.05%, as compared to the accuracy of 84.21% with conventional MFCC. It has also been observed that the FrFT based MFCC effieciently classifies the two western genres of Rock and Classical music from the GTZAN dataset with a higher classification accuracy of 96.25% as compared to the classification accuracy of 80% with MFCC.

Modern linguistics is characterized by the establishment and formation of a new promising direction, based on anthropocentric theory of speech genres (TSG). The popularity of this direction lies in the interest of the scientists in the phenomenon of virtual communication, which has a certain structure and differs in mechanisms of influence on the social content. The multidimensionality and richness of genre forms determine the need for a diverse approach to the study of speech genres in modern genology. The aim of the article is to study and analyze the theory of speech genres in modern linguistics. The author presents the basic theoretical foundations of the study of the theory of speech genres. Taking into account the achievements of modern studies, the concept of speech genres is analyzed, features and functions of the visual elements of the speech genre are described. It is proved that the modern speech genre and its variety the virtual speech genre are an informational and communicative environment in which there is a certain styling, sphere of communication, speech behavior. The speech genre and the virtual speech genre belong to the written communication and rely on the fullest use of lexical, grammatical, graphic, and media means of speech, which foresees certain adjustments, as well as it differs by the form of dialogue and monologue.

The introduction of the English-American Academic Fiction Genre in the 20th and 21st centuries was a striking event in the world of literature. The genre was born in 1952 by two pieces of work published simultaneously – “The Groves of Academe” by Mary McCartney and “Lucky Jim” by K. Amis. Numerous talented authors followed the two ones, among them Malcolm Bradbury (1932-2000), Phillip Rote (1933), Alison Laurie (1926), John Maxwell Coetzee (1940) and Francine Prose (1947). The novels of this genre depict a whole chain of events where student-lecturer-family relationships are reflected. Academic Fiction Genre already has established and unique features. Each novel provides a detailed description of the academic setting where the main events unfold. Initially, light mockery was typical of this genre which, along with the gradual disappointment of the authors, developed into bitter and deep irony and later into tragedy. The climax of the novel is either a ball or an evening party where the main problems of the novel are highlighted and where the possible solutions to these problems are delicately mentioned. The present article discusses the introduction of the Academic Fiction Genre which has become one of the meaningful events in modern literature since it provides an opportunity to look at the inter-relations between an individual and the society and evaluate the genre peculiarities from a new perspective.

Text genre classification is the process of identifying functional characteristics of text documents. The immense quantity of text documents available on the web can be properly filtered, organised and retrieved with the use of text genre classification, which may have potential use on several other tasks of natural language processing and information retrieval. Genre may refer to several aspects of text documents, such as function and purpose. The language function analysis (LFA) concentrates on single aspect of genres and it aims to classify text documents into three abstract classes, such as expressive, appellative and informative. Text genre classification is typically performed by supervised machine learning algorithms. The extraction of an efficient feature set to represent text documents is an essential task for building a robust classification scheme with high predictive performance. In addition, ensemble learning, which combines the outputs of individual classifiers to obtain a robust classification scheme, is a promising research field in machine learning research. In this regard, this article presents an extensive comparative analysis of different feature engineering schemes (such as features used in authorship attribution, linguistic features, character n-grams, part of speech n-grams and the frequency of the most discriminative words) and five different base learners (Naïve Bayes, support vector machines, logistic regression, k-nearest neighbour and Random Forest) in conjunction with ensemble learning methods (such as Boosting, Bagging and Random Subspace). Based on the empirical analysis, an ensemble classification scheme is presented, which integrates Random Subspace ensemble of Random Forest with four types of features (features used in authorship attribution, character n-grams, part of speech n-grams and the frequency of the most discriminative words). For LFA corpus, the highest average predictive performance obtained by the proposed scheme is 94.43%.
