A Little Greek Reader by James Morwood and Stephen Anderson forms a companion volume to A Little Latin Reader by Mary English and Georgia Irby (though one might be seduced into thinking from the cover illustration and italic title print that this is a volume from the JACT Reading Greek stable). The twenty-plus chapters focus on different points of Greek grammar (for example, ‘Indirect Statement’ [64–74] and ‘Result Clauses’ [99–106]), prefaced with brief grammatical introductions and then illustrated with a selection of unadapted passages in prose and verse. Each passage is supported by linguistic and contextual notes, and an extensive vocabulary is supplied at the back of the book. Although billed as ‘an ideal supplement for undergraduate courses in beginning and intermediate Greek’ (back cover blurb) it should also be of use to sixth-form teachers for revision and extension work (it was, in fact, trialled at the JACT Greek Summer School in 2013). Appendices supply short biographical notes and offer help on meter and dialect. There is also a useful guide to literary terms – though the definition of ‘hyperbaton’ – ‘the dislocation of normal word order, by way of displacing one part of one clause into another’ (213; our emphasis) – seems unnecessarily proscriptive.

This essay offers a review of Literature, Science and a New Humanities by Jonathan Gottschall. The author challenges the field of literary studies to rethink long-held assumptions about the nature of knowledge and human nature. In particular, what appear to be dominant tendencies in the field have strongly resisted the inclusion of findings from biology and genetics specifically. This resistance is tied to a view that scientific methods do not apply to the study of literature, and that radical social-constructivist theory presents a general alternative to the traditional methods of scientific inquiry. A proposal is made to incorporate recent advances in the cognitive sciences into the analysis of literature. Specifically, concepts drawn from evolutionary psychology might be especially useful in the analysis of narrative themes.

Bakgrund: Anhöriga kan uppleva att stödet från sjuksköterskor vid vård i livets slutskede brister. Situationen kring vården i livets slutskede kan vara obekant och i vissa fall skrämmande för de anhöriga och de kan känna sig överväldigade och inte rustade för de känslor som uppkommer samt de beslut som måste fattas. Syfte: Att skapa en översikt av sjuksköterskors erfarenheter av att bemöta anhöriga i samband med vård i livets slutskede. Metod: En allmän litteraturöversikt. Elva artiklar analyserades utifrån syfte, metod och resultat. I arbetets resultat ingick sex artiklar med kvalitativ metod, fyra med kvantitativ metod och en artikel med mixad metod. Resultat: Tre teman identifierades: Utmaningen att möta anhöriga, Att känna trygghet i att bemöta anhöriga och Anhöriga är viktiga. Att bemöta anhöriga i samband med vård i livets slutskede upplevdes många gånger svårt och emotionellt betungande. När sjuksköterskorna skapade en relation till de anhöriga underlättades vården och omsorgen om patienten. Anhöriga hade en central roll vid vården i livets slutskede. Slutsats: Sjuksköterskornas erfarenheter visar att bemötande av anhöriga i samband med vård i livets slutskede kan vara utmanande men är en viktig och central del i vården och omsorgen om den döende patienten.
Background: Relatives can feel that the support from nurses in end-of-life care is lacking. The situation regarding palliative care can be unknown territory and, in some cases, frightening for the relatives and they may feel overwhelmed and unequipped for the feelings that arise and the decisions that must be made. Aim: The purpose of this review was to create an overview of nurses’ experiences of interacting with relatives in conjuction with end-of-life care. Method: A general literary review. Eleven articles where analyzed based on purpose, method, and results. The review included six qualitative articles, four quantitative articles and one article with mixed method. Result: Three themes were identified: The challenge of interacting with relatives, Feeling secure in their interacting with relatives and Relatives are important. Dealing with relatives in conjunction with end-of-life care was often experienced as difficult and emotionally burdensome. When the nurses created a relationship with the relatives, the care and nursing of the patient was facilitated. Relatives has a central role in end-of-life care. Conclusion: The nurses’ experiences reveal that interacting with relatives in conjunction with end-of-life care can be challenging but has an important and central part in nursing for the dying patient.

In the face of global economic recession, the competition and collaboration for innovation and future growth among nations has led to discussions of how young people are being prepared to become the next generation of workers and leaders. Although the U.S. has enjoyed a strong presence among the international community since the turn of the century, U.S. scores on international reading assessments and the GCI have dropped over the past decade. National literacy assessment comparisons on the NAEP show that variations exist in economic equity and literacy achievement among the fifty states.

Multiple Spearman rho calculations were performed in the study to examine the possibility of a correlation between academic achievement and economic health using the PISA OECD country literacy rankings, the NAEP U.S. state literacy rankings, and the GDP per capita from 2009. In doing so, the possibility of a correlation between international and national data was investigated.

In the period 2005-2010 the Czech Republic has exhibited a growth in computer and Internet usage across society. As is to be expected from the literature, younger generations, especially what has been termed Generation Z, show significantly higher levels of computer literacy than older generations. Computer literacy is also at the highest level among the most highly educated and among households with children. Government policies to increase computer literacy have had positive effects, however they have only been a partial success. All schoolchildren have access to computers and the Internet, however there have been no effective policies for increasing computer literacy among the adult population. The result of this lack of policy is that the Czech Republic, in a position common to much of Europe, failed to meet the challenges of the Lisbon Strategy and will likely fail to meet the targets of Europe 2020.

AbstractThis chapter analyzes literary advice culture from a transnational-comparative perspective. It sheds light on the reception of the American poetics of creative writing in contemporary France by examining the specific case of Outils du roman: Avec Malt Olbren sur les pistes et exercices du creative writing à l’américaine (2016, Tools of the Novel. Exploring American Creative Writing with Malt Olbren) by the experimental prose-writer François Bon. This text represents a broader dynamic in which French authors of literary advice resort to a repertoire of American writing techniques in an attempt to revive French literature. To conceptualize this process of transfer, I use Deleuze and Guattari’s concept of “minor literature.” This notion conveys how literary advice in France must constantly position itself vis-à-vis its American counterpart, but also how it appropriates and transforms this same body of ideas and techniques. More generally, this chapter makes a case for an increased consideration of supranational transfers in the domain of literary advice when studying processes of local literary change.

Literary Tourism is one of the fastest growing forms of Tourism, so we investigated it in relation to authenticity. In the theoretical part, we conducted a literature review, where we were introduced to Literary Tourism and authenticity, in connection with the city of Maribor, and poet and General Rudolf Maister. Considering that Maister's birthplace and place of creation is not Maribor, we determined how Literary Tourism could be authentic there, so we established a literary route for monuments and objects named after him. We also took part in the research, and found that it is characterised by an approach of existential authenticity, since each person in the group experienced it on an individual level in their own way.

This Chapter reflects on the alleged special association between religion in general and violence – an association rebutted by both authors under review, David Martin (in Religion and Power: No logos without mythos) and Karen Armstrong (in Fields of Blood: Religion and the history of violence). It was first published in the Times Literary Supplement on 10 December 2014, under the heading “Poplars in the marsh”. These two very different authors also agree that violent resistance is an inevitable response to policies that oppress large populations. This chapter examines a key period in the growth and development of Time and Tide highlighted by its size and price increase in 1928. Exploring Time and Tide’s increased use of illustration, the relationships it developed with a new set of advertisers, and a strategic alliance it forged with the Nation and Athenaeum, the chapter shows how this modern magazine capitalised on contemporary debates about the future of the press and successfully rebranded itself as a leading general-audience weekly review competitive with the New Statesman. The chapter further argues that Time and Tide’s increased emphasis on books following its ‘literary turn’ in 1928 was a key strategy in moving the magazine out of the ‘women’s paper’ category and into the ranks of the intellectual weeklies. At the same, its participation in the cultures of literary celebrity continued to serve a feminist agenda in its promotion of women writers (modernist and middlebrow) as well as the work of female critics such as the periodical’s own director and contributor Rebecca West.

How does one study medical discourse in Romantic periodicals? This methodological essay outlines a range of possible approaches in a digital age, taking Blackwood’s as a test case. Its open by offering a series of practical steps for identifying medical articles in the magazine, including usings contents pages, published and digital bibliographical materials, targeted keyword searches, and attribution indexes. One particularly difficulty is identifying and determining what constitutes a ‘medical article’, particularly in the case of magazines like Blackwood’s, where the tradition of explicitly categorising articles gave way to the miscellany format. This organizational shift gave rise to such generic hybrids such as the ‘medico-literary’ review and the ‘medico-popular’ short story. Arguing that the study of medical discourse in Blackwood’s will never be exhaustive with the manual and digital tools currently available, the remainder of this paper models how one might productively study identifiable strands of medical discourse in the magazine, focusing on a series of medico-literary reviews written by John Wilson in the character of ‘Christopher North’.

The chapter constructs a theory of capitalist development based on a distinction between capital-ascendant and capital-dominant countries. It makes this analytical separation by distinguishing real, actual, and empirical levels in a political economy. It then finishes with a review of critical development theory and its historical methods in order to identify the chapter’s own framework and its merits.

Epistemic logic programs constitute an extension of the stable model semantics to deal with new constructs called "subjective literals." Informally speaking, a subjective literal allows checking whether some objective literal is true in all or some stable models. However, its associated semantics has proved to be non-trivial, since the truth of subjective literals may interfere with the set of stable models it is supposed to query. As a consequence, no clear agreement has been reached and different semantic proposals have been made in the literature. In this paper, we review an extension of the well-known splitting property for logic programs to the epistemic case. This "epistemic splitting property" is defined as a general condition that can be checked on any arbitrary epistemic semantics. Its satisfaction has desirable consequences both in the representation of conformant planning problems and in the encoding of the so-called subjective constraints.

This work aims to identify the challenges of Higher Education Institutions against the increasing digitalization. The first part of the work reviews Industry 4.0, analyses recent scientific works to demonstrate how the technological changes and especially the development of Information and Communication Technologies causes the future of jobs. Fourth Industrial Revolution creates the general foundation for the activities of nowadays; the platform economy is gaining strength; digital transformation with the advent of big data, digital literacy, and data literacy is becoming increasingly essential. To prepare students for their future work is the direct responsibility of Higher Education Institutions. The second part of this work is devoted to the challenges of the education system, focusing on the Higher Education Institutions. Desk research is conducted to analyze what changes will bring the ongoing process and how these institutions should respond to the challenges of digitalization. The contribution of this paper is to develop the conceptual design of responding measures to the digitalization taken by Higher Education Institutions.

This paper discussed the advantages and disadvantages of distance learning influences on adult learners. Distance learning has become popular in higher institutions because of its flexibility and availability to learners and teachers at anytime, regardless of geographic location. With so many definitions and phases of distance education, this paper only focuses on the delivery mode of distance education (the use of information technology), background, and its disadvantages and advantages for today’s adult learners. Overall, distance learning is increasingly becoming an alternative in education, industry, large corporation, and various government entities, by and large when students, employees are far and wide spread geographically within and outside that region in which the course has been taken place. As a result of this success, the benefits of distance learning have led many higher educational institutions to implement some distance learning classes, even if on an experimental basis. As a consequence, society in general may benefit from an overall increase in literacy through greater access to education (Belanger & Jordan, 2004). In the United States alone, 62% of public 4-year institutions offered some courses over the Internet in 1995, an increase of 150% over 1992 (National Center for Educational Statistics, 1997).

Renewable Energy has a crucial interest for a remote area like Reunion Island. The supply of electricity based on renewable energy has many advantages but the major drawback is the production of electricity which varies highly according to the availability of the resource (wind, solar, wave, etc...). This causes a real problem for non interconnected electrical grid where intermittent renewable energies should be limited to a maximum of 30%. The ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) provides an alternative of electricity production from the available energy of the oceans present all the time. By using surface hot water and deep cold water from the ocean, it is possible to operate a thermodynamics cycle, which will then generate electricity. In this article, in the first part a literary and technological review is carried out in two areas: electricity production and cooling of buildings with deep water. This study establishes a knowledge base on thermodynamic cycles consistent with the OTEC and on dimensional and functional parameters associated with this technology. Steady state simulations are presented to understand the operation of the system. Steady state models will evaluate the potential of the OTEC in distributing base electricity. These simulations will help evaluating the potential for new thermodynamic cycles such as the Kalina cycle. With these tools, a sensitivity study will evaluate the influence of different parameters on the cycle.

Aim/Purpose: [This Proceedings paper was revised and published in Informing Science: the International Journal of an Emerging Transdiscipline (InfoSci)] To develop and introduce a questionnaire that investigates the informing needs, information-seeking behavior, and supplier selection of procurement officers in Israel. The questionnaire’s internal consistency reliability is given. Additionally, we describe the demographic description of the procurement officers in Israel. Background: Procurement science is an important field that affects firms’ profits in the private sector and is significant to growth, innovation, sustainability, and welfare in the public sector. There is little research about the informing needs of procurement officers in general and particularly in Israel. Methodology: A quantitative questionnaire that is sent to all the procurement officers in Israel’s purchasing and logistics managers association. Contribution: The questionnaire that is developed in this paper may be used by other researchers and practitioners to evaluate the informing needs of procurement officers. Findings: The typical procurement officer is male, with a bachelor degree and is digitally proficient. Recommendations for Practitioners: The procuring side can use the questionnaire to develop better tools for obtaining information efficiently. The supplying side can use this knowledge to improve its exposure to potential customers and address its customer’s needs better. Recommendation for Researchers: The questionnaire can address theoretical questions such as how digital literacy affects the procurement process and provide empirical findings about active research areas such as supplier selection and information-seeking behavior. Future Research: Future research will examine the relationship between the various variables and demographic features to understand why specific informing needs and information-seeking behaviors arise.

Aim/Purpose: [This Proceedings paper was revised and published in the 2018 issue of the journal Issues in Informing Science and Information Technology, Volume 15] In this exploratory study we investigate the influential factors of users' decisions in the dilemma whether to agree to online personalization or to protect their online privacy. Background: Various factors related to online privacy and anonymity were considered, such as user's privacy concern on the Web in general and particularly on social networks, user online privacy literacy and field of study. Methodology: To this end, 155 students from different fields of study in the Israeli academia were administered closed-ended questionnaires. Contribution: The main conceptual contribution of this study was the creation of a new direct scale for assessing user decisions regarding the personalization-privacy tradeoff. Another contribution was the investigation of the predictive factors of the personalization-privacy tradeoff. While previous studies found that users seldom allow their privacy concerns to affect their online behavior, our results revealed the opposite, as the participants with a higher level of concern for online privacy tended to prefer privacy protection, at the expense online personalization. Findings: The multivariate linear regression analysis showed that as the participants' privacy concern increases, they tend to prefer privacy protection over online personalization. In addition, we found significant differences between men and women, as men tended to favor privacy protection more than women did. Recommendations for Practitioners: The new direct scale that was developed may be used by other practitioners to measure other issues relating to the privacy paradox behavior. Recommendation for Researchers: The questionnaire may be used by other researchers to examine online information behavior. Impact on Society: This research has social implications for the academia and general public as they show that by raising the concern for the protection of personal information on the Web, it is possible to influence the personalization-privacy tradeoff and encourage users to prefer privacy protection. Furthermore, the enhancement of users' preference for privacy protection over Web-surfing convenience may be used as a mean to mitigate the online privacy paradox behavior. Future Research: Since our results were based on students' self-perceptions, which might be biased, future work should apply qualitative analysis to explore additional types and influencing factors of online privacy behavior.

The ASME Codes and referenced standards provide industry and the public the necessary rules and guidance for the design, fabrication, inspection and pressure testing of pressure equipment. Codes and standards evolve as the underlying technologies, analytical capabilities, materials and joining methods or experiences of designers improve; sometimes competitive pressures may be a consideration. As an illustration, the design margin for unfired pressure vessels has decreased from 5:1 in the earliest ASME Code edition of the early 20th century to the present day margin of 3.5:1 in Section VIII Division 1. Design by analysis methods allow designers to use a 2.4:1 margin for Section VIII Division 2 pressure vessels. Code prohibitions are meant to prevent unsafe use of materials, design methods or fabrication details. Codes also allow the use of designs that have proven themselves in service in so much as they are consistent with mandatory requirements and prohibitions of the Codes. The Codes advise users that not all aspects of construction activities are addressed and these should not be considered prohibited. Where prohibitions are specified, it may not be readily apparent why these prohibitions are specified. The use of “forged bar stock” is an example where use in pressure vessels and for certain components is prohibited by Codes and standards. This paper examines the possible motive for applying this prohibition and whether there is continued technical merit in this prohibition, as presently defined. A potential reason for relaxing this prohibition is that current manufacturing quality and inspection methods may render a general prohibition overly conservative. A recommendation is made to better define the prohibition using a more measurable approach so that higher quality forged billets may be used for a wider range and size of pressure components. Jurisdictions with a regulatory authority may find that the authority is rigorous and literal in applying Code provisions and prohibitions can be particularly difficult to accept when the underlying engineering principles are opaque. This puts designers and users in these jurisdictions at a technical and economic disadvantage. This paper reviews the possible engineering considerations motivating these Code and standard prohibitions and proposes modifications to allow wider Code use of “high quality” forged billet material to reflect some user experiences.
