Vermeersiekte or “vomiting disease” is an economically important disease of ruminants following ingestion of Geigeria (G.) species in South Africa. Sheep are more susceptible, and poisoning is characterized by stiffness, regurgitation, bloat, paresis, and paralysis. Various sesquiterpene lactones have been implicated as the cause of poisoning. The in vitro cytotoxicity of two sesquiterpene lactones, namely, ivalin (purified from Geigeria aspera) and parthenolide (a commercially available sesquiterpene lactone), were compared using mouse skeletal myoblast (C2C12) and rat embryonic cardiac myocyte (H9c2) cell lines, representing the oesophageal, skeletal and cardiac muscles, which are affected in sheep. For 24, 48, and 72 h, both cell lines were exposed. A colorimetric viability assay, 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT), was used to assess cytotoxicity. A concentration-dependent cytotoxic response was observed in both cell lines, however, the C2C12 cells were more sensitive, with the half-maximal effective concentrations (EC50s) ranging between 2.7 and 3.3 µM. In addition, the effect that ivalin and parthenolide has on desmin, an important cytoskeletal intermediate filament in myocytes, was evaluated using the C2C12 myoblasts. Disorganization and aggregation of desmin were caused by both sesquiterpene lactones, which could clarify some of the ultrastructural lesions described in vermeersiekte.

Various kinds of orientalist studies on Islam began in the early 19th century, such as studies of the al-Qur`an, hadith, fiqh, and others. One of the orientalist who study Islam from the aspect of the Qur'an is Abraham Geiger. Geiger said, that there are several aspects of the Qur'an that adopted by Jewish traditions. Based on these reasons, the resecher are interested in studying this theme further. This study is a study of library research, with descriptive-analysis method. The conclusion of this study is that some Muslim scholars acknowledge the influence of Islam from other religions, not only from the linguistic aspect of the Qur'an, but also from the empirical-practical, and Islam comes to renew and modify the traditions of previous religions that are not in accordance with values of Islam.

This article presents the results of a poll made among the members of the editorial and advisory boards of Valuation Studies. The purpose is to overview the topic that is the remit of the new journal. The poll focused on three questions: Why is the study of valuation topical? What specific issues related to valuation are the most pressing ones to explore? What sites and methods would be interesting for studying valuation? The answers to these questions provided by sixteen board members form the basis of the article. Based on these answers, it identifies a number of themes concerning the study of valuation, elaborating on the rationale for attending to valuation, the conceptual challenges linked to this, and the specific issues and sites that deserve further attention. Within the framework of Coulomb and proximity potential model (CPPM), the probable heavy particle decays from various isotopes of superheavy nuclei (SHN), [Formula: see text], within the range [Formula: see text]–[Formula: see text] have been studied using two versions of proximity potential; proximity 1977 and proximity 2000. The decay half lives evaluated using proximity 2000 is observed to be higher than the values obtained using proximity 1977. The effect of surface deformation on the decay half lives is studied using Coulomb and proximity potential for deformed nuclei (CPPMDN). As a result of the inclusion of deformation [Formula: see text], the penetrability of the decays are observed to be increased and accordingly the decay half lives are reduced. The estimated values are compared with other theoretical models, Universal curve (UNIV), Universal Decay law (UDL) and the scaling law of Horoi. The odd–even staggering (OES) effect is observed in the emission of odd mass clusters. An intriguing aspect of the study is the effect of the magicity at [Formula: see text] which is confirmed from the plot of [Formula: see text] against the neutron number of the daughter nuclei. Almost all the predicted half lives are favorable for experimental measurements. The Geiger–Nuttall (GN) plots and the Universal curve have been studied for various cluster emissions from various superheavy isotopes with [Formula: see text]. Finally, the linearity of the GN plot and the Universal curve of the heavy particle emissions very well established the strength of CPPM.

The present volume contains the proceedings from the symposium Micromolluscs: Methodological Challenges – Exciting Results held during the 16th UNITAS Malacologica World Congress of Malacology in Antwerp, Belgium, July 15–20, 2007. For the purpose of this volume, micromolluscs were defi ned as molluscs no larger than 5 mm. Such forms play an important role in a variety of research fi elds, such as origin, phylogeny or biodiversity of the phylum. It is widely recognized that the small molluscan fauna is incredibly diverse and replete with signifi cant discoveries to be made, yet few people work on micromolluscs as they are perceived as being diffi cult to deal with. The former aspect has been demonstrated by the landmark study of Bouchet et al. (2002), while Geiger et al. (2007) provided a fi rst manual for many aspects of working with these small organisms. The world of micromolluscs is still wide open, as is shown here. The contributions cover a wide spectrum of scientifi c aspects ranging from methodological assessments, case studies, to review articles. We aim at encouraging working with micromolluscs and showcasing that the types of discoveries that can be made are well worth the slightly greater effort expended.

Vermeersiekte or ‘vomiting disease’ is an economically important disease of ruminants following ingestion of Geigeria species in South Africa. Sheep are more susceptible and poisoning is characterised by stiffness, regurgitation, bloat, paresis and paralysis. Geigeria aspera was collected in the Vrede district (27° 25′ 48″ S; 29° 9′ 36″ E), Free State Province. The plant material was dried, milled and the toxic principles, known as sesquiterpene lactones, were extracted and isolated following chromatographic procedures. Even though geigerin and ivalin were previously isolated, an unknown sesquiterpene lactone, isogeigerin acetate, was also purified. Mouse myoblast (C2C12) and rat embryonic cardiac myocyte (H9c2) cell lines were exposed to different concentrations of geigerin, ivalin, isogeigerin acetate and a commercially available sesquiterpene lactone, parthenolide. An in vitro colorimetric assay 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) was used to assess cytotoxicity. The median effective concentrations (EC50) indicated that ivalin and parthenolide were significantly (p<0.05) more toxic than geigerin and isogeigerin acetate. A concentration-dependent cytotoxic response was observed in both cell lines, however, C2C12 cells were more sensitive. A high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis was used to evaluate the in vitro metabolism of parthenolide, following the addition of a mouse liver microsomal fraction. Results revealed that parthenolide, incubated with the microsomal fraction, undergoes enzymatic transformation to form a metabolite.
