Digitally mediated social networking is now an ordinary aspect of everyday life and gambling platforms are designed accordingly. This article explores how changing iconography has facilitated gambling’s rapid integration within social media and interactive entertainment products and platforms. While there is a substantial literature in cultural studies of digital video games and virtual worlds, most of the academic literature on gambling addresses clinical and regulatory challenges associated with problem gambling. As a consequence, the role of visual iconography, gameplay, narrative and soundscapes in constructing cultural spaces and products of gambling has been largely neglected. Critically engaging with established and emerging theories of mimesis and play, we explore how visual design facilitates the growth of new markets for gambling in a digital culture that privileges interactive forms of consumption.

Background Technology has significantly reshaped the landscape and accessibility of gambling, creating uncharted territory for researchers and policy makers involved in the responsible gambling (RG) agenda. Digital payment solutions (DPS) are the latest addition of technology-based services in gambling and are now prominently used for deposit and win withdrawal. The seamless collaboration between online gambling operators and DPS, however, has raised concerns regarding the potential role of DPS platforms in facilitating harmful behavior. Objective Using a focus group session with problem gamblers, this study describes a preliminary investigation of the role of DPS in the online gambling context and its influence on players’ gambling habits, financial behavior, choices of gambling environment, and the overall outcome of gambling subjective experiences. Methods A total of 6 problem gamblers participated in a one-and-half-hour focus group session to discuss how DPSs are integrated into their everyday gambling habits, what motivates them to use DPS, and what shifts they observe in their gambling behavior. Thematic analysis was used to analyze the empirical evidence with a mix of inductive and deductive research approaches as a knowledge claim strategy. Results Our initial findings revealed that the influence of DPSs in online gambling is multifaced where, on the one hand, their ability to integrate with players’ existing habits seamlessly underscores the facilitating role they play in potentially maximizing harm. On the other hand, we find preliminary evidence that DPSs can have a direct influence on gambling outcomes in both subtle and pervasive ways—nudging, institutionalizing, constraining, or triggering players’ gambling activities. This study also highlights the increasingly interdisciplinary nature of online gambling, and it proposes a preliminary conceptual framework to illustrate the sociotechnical interplay between DPS and gambling habits that ultimately capture the outcome of gambling’s subjective experience. Conclusions Disguised as a passive payment enabler, the role of DPS has so far received scant attention; however, this exploratory qualitative study demonstrates that given the technological advantage and access to customer financial data, DPS can become a potent platform to enable and at times trigger harmful gambling. In addition, DPS’s bird’s-eye view of cross-operator gambling behavior can open up an opportunity for researchers and policy makers to explore harm reduction measures that can be implemented at the digital payment level for gambling customers. Finally, more interdisciplinary studies are needed to formulate the sociotechnical nature of online gambling and holistic harm minimization strategy.

ECONOMIC ACTIVITY SUBJECTED TO REGLAMENTATION IN THE LIGHT OF THE CASE LAW OF THE COURT OF JUSTICE OF THE EUROPEAN UNION EXEMPLIFIED BY CONDUCTING GAMBLINGIn EU law, conducting gambling is classified as the exercise of the freedoms of the internal market, regulated in the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union. Conducting gambling is not currently regulated or harmonized at EU level, and therefore the regulation of gambling is the competence of Member States. EU law defining acceptable ways of regulating gambling in the Member States is now a judge-made law and the result of the creative jurisprudence of the Court of Justice of the European Union. So far, the Court has issued dozens of judgments in which it interpreted Treaty provisions proclaiming the freedoms of the internal market in the context of conducting gambling. These judgments provide a direct or indirect assessment of whether national law complies with EU law.

Introduction Gambling disorder involves repeated problematic gambling behavior that causes significant problems or distress. It is also called gambling addiction or compulsive gambling. In Tunisia, a muslum country, gambling is prohibited and casinos are non-existent or only for tourists with foreign currency. Lately, with the spread of casinos online and sites of sports betting, gambling’s become problematic in Tunisia. People accumulated huge debts with feelings of shame and guilt leading to suicidal attempts. Objectives Studying the link between gambling disorder and suicidal attempts and comparing the different preventive measures proposed for online gambling. Methods a case of a patient with gambling disorder that was hospitalized in a psychiatric hospital for a suicidal attempt by stabbing himself and a review of a literature. Results Mr R.A was a 42-year-old man with no family nor personal psychiatric history. He has no history of a particular substance use disorder. He was married and a father of two children and has a regular job. A year ago, he stated gambling on internet sites using his phone cell and, in several months, he lost a lot of money and accumulated debts. Lately he committed two attempts of suicide. The first one was by swallowing rat poison. The second one was a month later, by stabbing himself with a knife that caused evisceration and required surgery then an hospitalization in a psychiatric unit. Conclusions There’s evidence that GD and SB are associated, although there’s disagreement about the nature of this association. Adequate preventive measures should be considered by governments Disclosure No significant relationships.

The increasing ease of internet access has led to its misuse in the form of online gambling. Initially, online games served as the entry point, but curiosity and interest have driven teenagers to participate in online gambling. Kartono (2014) defines gambling as the intentional act of risking something valuable with awareness of the associated risks and specific expectations for uncertain events, such as games, matches, races, and other occurrences. The uncertainty of outcomes generates expectations and tension for gamblers. nawati, Prakoso, and Prihatmi (2015) assert that the development of information and communication technology significantly influences the gambling model and its payment methods. Unlike traditional gambling, which requires face-to-face interactions, physical means, and cash payments, online gambling leverages the internet, enabling games without physical encounters. The rapid evolution of online gambling in recent decades has facilitated easy access to various forms of gambling through the internet. Despite gambling's historical existence, online gambling possesses distinct characteristics that entail specific risks. This journal aims to identify and explore the diverse negative impacts associated with online gambling, while also delving into control measures that can be implemented to address these issues. Employing the qualitative descriptive phenomenology research method, our study will uncover shared meanings of the online gambling phenomenon as experienced by a group of students (Sahputra et al., 2022). The methodology employed here is the literature review method, wherein an independent activity is conducted to collect literature data, engage in reading and note-taking, and process research materials from various sources, such as books, online media, print media, and national and international journals. Online gambling has emerged as a concerning phenomenon globally. This journal examines various aspects related to the hazards of online gambling, encompassing social, economic, and health impacts. Additionally, we discuss control efforts that can be implemented to address these issues, with the ultimate goal of enhancing understanding and promoting more effective actions in addressing this problem. Online gambling presents numerous dangers that can adversely affect individuals and society at large. To tackle this issue, control efforts, including stringent regulations, public education, and rehabilitation programs, are imperative. A comprehensive understanding of the perils of online gambling will enable collaborative efforts to create a safer and healthier environment for everyone. Concrete actions are necessary to shield society from the detrimental impacts of online gambling.

This paper builds upon DeBoer's (2001) assertion that models of ancient North American cultural systems can be enriched by incorporating gambling as a dynamic and productive social practice using the case study of the Ancient Puebloan center of Chaco Canyon (ca. AD 800–1180). A review of Native North American, Pueblo, and worldwide ethnography reveals gambling's multidimensionality as a social, economic, and ceremonial technology in contrast to its recreational associations in contemporary Western society. I propose that gambling was one mechanism through which leaders in precontact North America—and, specifically, at Chaco Canyon—integrated diverse communities, facilitated trade, accumulated material wealth, perpetuated religious ideology, and established social inequality. I present evidence of gambling at Chaco Canyon in the form of 471 gaming artifacts currently held in museum collections in addition to oral traditions of descendant Native cultures that describe extensive gambling in Chacoan society.

Humans have a tendency to engage in economically irrational behaviors such as gambling, which typically leads to long-term financial losses. While there has been much research on human gambling behavior, relatively little work has been done to explore the evolutionary origins of this behavior. To examine the adaptive pressures that may have led to this seemingly irrational behavior in humans, nonhuman primates were tested to explore their reactions to gambling type scenarios. Several experiments based on traditional human economic experiments were adapted for use with a wider variety of primate species including chimpanzees and capuchin monkeys. This allowed for testing multiple species using similar methodologies in order to make more accurate comparisons of species abilities. This series of tasks helps to elucidate risky decision-making behavior in three primate species.

Der volle Inhalt der Quelle
Annotation:
In A Theory of Justice (1971) John Rawls attempted to solve the problem of distributive justice by combining self-interest, ignorance and risk-aversion. He argued that if self-interested persons in a situation of uncertainty imposed by a veil of ignorance were choosing principles for the basic structure of society, then they would be risk-adverse and choose two principles – The Principle of Equal Liberty and the Difference Principle. Critics have argued against this risk-adverse element of Rawls’ theory but those critics as well as Rawls made certain presuppositions about risk-aversion, risk-taking and gambling. This thesis also examines the risk-aversion in Rawls’ theory but addresses the previous shortfall by exploring the issue of risk and gambling in two interrelated ways. It applies a Foucauldian approach to the history of risk and gambling in order to contextualise the current views and then investigates the contemporary meaning by drawing on research leading up to the UK Gambling Act 2005. Drawing on these findings it argues that not only might risk-taking occur in the original position but that different types of participants could show different degrees of risk-taking behaviour. By exploring the theoretical debates between essentialism and anti-essentialism, it further argues that it is unlikely that the veil of ignorance would be able to screen out those differences. It then employs theories of identity and difference in the work of Heidegger, Deleuze and Lyotard in an attempt to overcome that weakness in Rawls’ theory but finds that this may not be possible. After highlighting a connection between impartiality and gambling, it concludes, in contrast to Rawls, that risk-taking rather than risk-aversion lies at the heart of social justice. The implication of this reversal is that it may have an impact on policy-decisions in other areas of the justice system.

The general aim of this thesis was to examine risk gambling in the general population from a psychological perspective. This was done in three studies targeting personality, risky alcohol habits and gambling motives, respectively. Initially, 19 530 randomly assigned Swedish citizens were screened for problem gambling via telephone using the two questions in the Lie/Bet questionnaire. This sample constitutes the basis for one of the studies in the thesis. For the other studies, individuals answering yes to one of the questions in the Lie/Bet questionnaire and agreeing to participate further were sent a postal questionnaire. The questionnaire included questions about gambling, personality and gambling motives.   Some of the main results showed that: Negative consequences of gambling were associated with higher levels of impulsivity and negative affectivity. Risk gamblers reported lower levels of negative affectivity compared to the general population. Compared to non-risk gamblers, twice as many of the risk gamblers reported weekly binge drinking during the past 12 months. This association, however, seemed to be explained by shared demographic characteristics, rather than by the risk gambling causing binge drinking. High risk gamblers more often reported that they gambled for the challenge and for coping reasons, compared to low risk gamblers. High risk gamblers had overall stronger motives for gambling. The results also indicated that the level of risk gambling was highly intertwined with gambling motives and could explain some differences in gambling motives between, for example, women/men and younger/older gamblers. One of the focal points in the discussion was that higher levels of negative affectivity may be a cause of elevated problems rather than a cause of risk gambling. Another issue discussed was that the level of risk- /problem gambling may be important to consider when comparing gambling motives across subgroups of gamblers.

As online casino and betting increases in popularity across the globe, the importance of green gambling has become an important subject of discussion. The Swedish betting company, ATG, realises the benefits of this and would like to prevent their gamblers from falling into problem gambling. To predict problem gambling, Bayesian networks were trained on previously identified problem gamblers, separated into seven risk groups. The network was then able to predict the risk group of previously unseen gamblers with an ac- curacy of 94%. It also achieved an average precision of 89%, an average recall of 96% and an average f1-score of 93%. The features in the data set were also ranked, to find which were most important in predicting problem gambling. It was found that municipality, which day of the week the transaction was made and during which hour of the day were the most important features. Also, the Bayesian network was also made as simple as possible, by removing irrelevant features and features which carry very low importance.

A comparison of the personality profiles of Gamblers Anonymous (GA) members, social gamblers and non-gamblers on the 16 PF, EPQ and Rotter's I-E Scale showed only that GA members scored significantly higher than both social gamblers and non-gamblers on the Neuroticism Scale of the EPQ. Other factors considered to be influential in gambling decisions were investigated. There were no significant differences in the risk-taking behaviour of high compared to low locus of control subjects but the risk taken and the recall of gambling decisions by internals and externals were sensitive to information on luck. Although gambling was shown not to be a stimulus-bound activity in the traditional sense, the presence of gambling cues increased risk-taking in social gamblers but lowered risk-taking in non-gamblers. Reinforcement history, especially the ratio of the number of wins and losses, the immediately preceding outcomes and runs of wins and losses were shown to be influential in the staking behaviour and the confidence in gambling of both social gamblers and non-gamblers. Personality and situational factors did not adequately account for the differences in risk-taking decisions. Physiological variations altered risk-taking within criterion groups. Moreover, different forms of arousal were shown to have different effects on risk-taking behaviour of social gamblers and non-gamblers. Significant interactions between arousal, gambling cues and reinforcement history suggested that a diversity of variables are important in determining gambling decisions rather than simply being under the control of economic or personality factors. There is some evidence which suggests that differences in levels of arousal may be an important underlying factor in describing the differences between social gamblers and non-gamblers. The repertory grid technique was explored as a research tool departing from the traditional methods of enquiry into gambling. The overall finding was that social gamblers construed gambling as a positive activity while non-gamblers construed gambling negatively.

This research analyses the field of gambling studies from the perspective of digital technologies over the past two decades (2004-2023). In the study, we use both qualitative and quantitative methods in order to identify the risks associated with gambling and the impact of digital technologies on them. We analysed 929 articles indexed on the Web of Science by Clarivate Analytics which contained the word “gambling” and were published exclusively in English. The analysis focuses on the themes which influence gambling studies, identifying the most popular topics utilised in studies: risk and technology. We have used qualitative analysis to identify and group the analysed subjects from each theme. Two main directions have been identified in the study: technological innovation and data analysis for business decision improvement. The bibliometric analysis and also the identified main themes from gambling studies ranging from 2004 to 2023 represents the originality of the study. The contribution this study brings is given by the main identified trend: gambling studies are steadily growing on a yearly basis.

Background and aims. Typical cognitive biases (irrational beliefs, cognitive distortions and erroneous perceptions) and high levels of impulsivity have been systematically reported among individuals with problem gambling. The objective of this study is to examine the role of the chronological age into the relationships between cognitive biases and impulsivity with the gambling disorder (GD) profile during adulthood. Methods. The sample analysed in this study included n=209 patients into the range age 18-77 yrs-old, recruited at the Pathological Gambling Outpatients Unit of the Bellvitge University Hospital (Barcelona). Results. Path-analysis showed a mediational link between chronological age, the presence of a comorbid depression or anxiety disorder, and the level of GD symptoms. Orthogonal polynomial contrasts showed a positive quadratic trend between the individuals’ age and cognitive distortions severity (higher impairing irrational beliefs obtained among younger and older patients, compared to middle-age patients). The sensation-seeking level showed a negative linear trend with the age: the older the patient’s age, the lower the score in this impulsivity domain. Among younger age patients gambling severity correlated only with cognitive bias levels, while during middle age patients gambling severity correlated with both cognitive bias and impulsivity levels. Within older age group fewer and poorer associations were found between cognitive bias and impulsivity with the accumulated debts due to the gambling activity, and the bets per gambling-episode. Conclusion. The results of this study could help in the development of reliable/valid assessment tools for GD, as well as for the design of precise/effective intervention plans and guidelines. These should include the patients’ age, the cognitive style, and the impulsivity levels, with the aim of providing precise and accurate tools to manage gambling problems.

Online gambling is a phenomenon that has taken the world by storm. Most people these days prefer to gamble from the comforts of their home rather than going to live gambling establishments and Malaysia is no exception. This paper will firstly outline the different laws that are in place to govern violations of online gambling with respect to the Muslim and non-Muslim nationals. Next, this paper will address whether the current regulations in Malaysia are sufficient in the regulation of online gambling in the country. Finally, the paper will point out the enforcement authorities that are responsible to oversee the regulation of online gambling activities in the country and whether these enforcement authorities are effectively tackling online gambling violations within the country. In this paper, the authors conducted the research methodology by way of doctrinal research. The primary research was done by examining and assessing relevant legislations and cases, whilst the secondary research was conducted by reference with materials that include, amongst others, publications in journals, conference papers, legal encyclopaedias and news releases, this paper could be a useful source of information for practitioners, academics, policymakers and students and a guide for any possible future amendments to the current insufficiency.

Review question / Objective: We were interested in studying the prevalence and correlates of disordered gambling among people with psychotic disorders. Participants: Adults (18-65 years) with psychotic disorders (schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, Psychosis NOS, first episode psychosis or first episode schizophrenia, early psychosis or early schizophrenia, schizophreniform psychosisschi-zophrenia, schizoaffective disorders, psychosis NOS). Indication: Disordered gambling or pathological gambling or gambling disorder. Comparator: Adults with psychotic disorders who do not have disordered gambling or healthy controls. Outcome: Prevalence and correlates. To investigate these issues further, we systematically reviewed published studies that report an association between psychosis and disordered gambling. We aimed to summarize the rates and correlates of disordered gambling among people with psychotic illnesses. We hypothesized that the rates would be higher than seen in the general population. In keeping with reports on gambling in general, we also hypothesized that gambling disorder in psychosis would be associated with being male, younger age, lower education, and lower socio-economic status.

Purpose & Significance: Despite the popularity of lottery and scratchcards and some evidence of gambling problems among players, limited research focuses on the risks of lottery and scratchcard play and predictors of problems, especially among young people. The purpose of this project is to examine whether lottery and scratchcard participation is related to gambling problems among 16-24 year olds in Great Britain and whether general and mental health and gambling behaviours explain this relationship. Methodology: Samples of 16-24 year olds were pooled from the 2012, 2015, and 2016 Gambling in England and Scotland: Combined Data from the Health Survey for England and the Scottish Health Survey (n=3,454). Bivariate analyses and Firth method logistic regression were used to examine the relationship between past-year lottery and scratchcard participation and gambling problems, assessing the attenuating role of mental wellbeing, mental health disorders, self-assessed general health, and playing other games in past year. Results: There is a significant association between scratchcard play and gambling problems. The association somewhat attenuated but remained significant after taking into account wellbeing, mental health disorders, general health, and engagement in other gambling activities. Findings also show that gambling problems are further predicted by age (20-24 years), gender (male), lower wellbeing, and playing any other gambling games. Implications: Results are valuable for informing youth-focused education, decisions around the legal age for National Lottery products, and the development of safer gambling initiatives for high risk groups and behaviours, such as scratchcard play.
