The Gallery for Mathematics seeks to interpret and communicate the character and culture of mathematics through the lens of architectural tectonic. The form and program of the Gallery are driven by three goals for the architectural experience and mathematical journey: [movement], [interaction], and [solitude]. By redesigning the traditional museum experience, the Gallery aims not to simply inform its visitors, but instead to incite their curiosity, producing spaces of inquiry rather than spaces of information. Sited on top of the parking garage for Boston's Museum of Science, the Gallery and its garden also serve to reconnect the Boston and Cambridge park systems on opposite banks of the Charles River, embedding the

Connections describes the physical means by which the building transforms concept into reality. These connections link between user and building; site and building; program and building; art and public. This study uses as a starting point a previous design project where advances technology allowed and informed the complex geometry and overall composition of the building. This thesis investigates the assemblage of the major building components to demonstrate how the connections make the building. This model will show how these technologies best realize the intent of the program. This art gallery gives up-and-coming local and regional artists and designers the opportunity to exhibit their work. The combination of the building and program will increase the interaction between the general public and art. The building design distinguishes itself from the typical temple- or vault-like quality of the art museum and exhibits a more inviting form. These connections not only make the building; they connect art and public in a more dynamic relationship.

The term "master-builder" defines an individual who encompasses the skills to conceptually conceive of and physically manifest a piece of architecture. These individuals are as much interested in the formal and social outcomes of a design as they are in the materials and construction techniques that make them real. Despite this, contemporary architectural practice has veered away from the concept of masterbuilder, and into more limiting and bracketed professional roles. The rise in project complexity and evolving legal frameworks mean that architects now work as part of a much larger and divided design and construction team. This thesis insists that designing and making are not two separate acts, but are rather one holistic process. It builds off of the contemporary momentum created by digital fabrication, rapid prototyping, and the maker movement but goes one step further. While it recognizes that the testing of design ideas through the construction of small scale models and mockups is important to the design process, this thesis argues that the 1 to 1 construction of buildings are an essential part of future architectural practice.

Spanning the Fort Point Channel for nearly a century, Boston's Rolling Bridge is a familiar landmark to many railway commuters and residents of the city. Its robust steel assembly, characterized by three anthropomorphic forms, demonstrates the principles of late nineteenth-century bridge design. As a symbol of the industrial age, it is also the last surviving drawbridge of its kind in the city. Unfortunately, this bridge will be demolished as part of the ongoing Central Artery / Third Harbor Tunnel project. Despite numerous efforts to salvage the structure for the arts community in the district, its re-utilization remains doubtful. The bridge's demolition exposes a prevalent problem in the post-industrial city: the annihilation of industrial artifacts by new infrastructural demands. Can one create a new future for an abandoned artifact such as the Rolling Bridge? This thesis suggests that the artifact evolves to dynamically engage its surrounding environment. It proposes that the bridge be dismantled and its parts reassembled into a building. By transplanting the new structure onto an adjacent site, a tension is created between the disappearance of the "ancestor" and the appearance of its "descendant". Recast as an art gallery for the Fort Point Arts Community, the transformed structure will present another chapter of the bridge's history. In re-utilizing the bridge components, the thesis will accomplish two tasks: one, preserve the memory of the original structure; and two, redefine the role of this artifact within the city. The mission is to provoke new ways of thinking about industrial relics by using the bridge as an instigator.

The primary focus of this investigation is the insertion of a new piece in an environment where the natural elements of site and the man-made elements of city can begin to inform the ordering systems used in the design process. The existing footprint of the ruins of La Antigua Penitenciaria, in the center of the Costa Rican capital, San Jose, is transformed in meaning and character to become a cultural center for the city. The problem presented is a contextual one of making a place in the world through a reading, cataloguing and reinterpretation of /lature, city, and culture. The .goal of the process is a building that reveals the meaning of its present time and place, set in a landscape that tells stories of its past.

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleQuestion formulation How do one interpret and represent a countrys’ culture through architecture? Is it possible to create a more easily accessible architecture through our method and starting point? Starting point/Method Through a vernacular starting point study the countrys food culture and traditions and their environments learn more about the country. Application The Finnish Institute is a cultural institution working and promoting Finnish culture in Sweden. The culture exhibited at the institute today could be complemented with a more direct and experiential approach. By taking part of the countrys’ fairly unknown food culture an easy access is created for everyone to get a first experience of the country. Result A Finnish restaurant, bar and event space and gallery at the ground floor of the Finnish Institutes house in central Stockholm. The rooms are configured by using a experiential method to investigate vernacular traditions and characteristics, with starting point in the Finnish food culture. As architects we are giving these rooms themes which configures their materiality, spatiality and atmosphere.

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThis dissertation is focused on the study of pavilions and their relationship with the three-dimensional production - understood as installation and sculpture. Therefore, the concept of \"expanded field\", elaborated by Rosalind Krauss in the 1979 essay to encompass the transformation of sculpture from the 60\'s, is articulated with the recent shift of this same concept into the realm of architecture by some authors, namely Antony Vidler. The research is not just an investigation on the contribution of the architectural space for sculpture or, on the other hand, from sculpture to architecture, but focuses especially the line that separates them, understood as a disposition of convergence by the two disciplines which dissolves the reciprocal bonds in a interstitial production, performed by artists, architects or even both together. The pavilion has always been understood as an experimental field for architects, especially during the twentieth century when it helped consolidate the assumptions of modern architecture. Today it has gained great visibility through several programs that offer specific conditions by commissioning and assuming a unique architecture design that sets up a production untied from the binomial form-function, resulting in a self referent building whose subject is the architecture itself. From the point of view of the arts, it represents an expansion of the installation configuring a spatial whole that also implicate the building and, when taken as meta architecture, also operates as a platform for critical confrontation. The opposition on theory about the ramifications of the expanded field, as well as a research on the essential characteristics to a malleable term, are faced with a critical analysis of selected cases in three institutions gathering rather distinct characteristics - the Venice Biennale, the Institute of Contemporary Art Inhotim and the Serpentine Gallery -, and allow conclusions on this contemporary production in a disciplinary threshold.

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThis dissertation intends to understand the architectural project implications in the moment of the execution of ephemeral works, and tries to elucidate the essential paradigms to this project due to the advanced stage of depredation found within the planets natural resources. However, even facing a bibliographic shortage on the theme, searching this thought, we will analyze three summer pavilions inside Serpentine Gallery, executed by well-known architects we believe that the concept in architecture remains in this work. The reading of these objects, non-verbally organized, needs a reference capable of elucidating the thought syntax that guides it, revealing the designer repertory through iconic and inkling data. In this moment, Charles Sanders Peirces theory is shown to be abundant, not only to reveal the architectural repertory and the projects paradigms that guide it, but also to find the way that these professionals turn their thoughts into matter through non-verbal architectural language. On the other hand, what is exhaustively seen throughout commercial events is the use of similar industrialized constructive systems, from which OCTANORM is the most known, what guarantees the continuity of the modern process and the elevation of the mounting an dismounting capability as the main value of the work. The hypotheses raised in here consider these systems as a manifestation of continuity and point to other architectures, still ephemeral, but disconnected to this dynamic and owners of specificities that characterize a particular field of study. The basis of this work, regarding the use of epistemology, features peircians semiotics a lot and, the fundamental bibliography, that gives the research an orientation, has its origin in the architecture philosophy and in the psychology of perception defended by many theorists.

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThe purpose of this thesis was to produce two alternative architectural designs, of a building, that will house various exhibitions and activities. Mainly those will be culture related; music and arts. The building is to be located in a Swedish lake, called Växjösjön, and the structure is intended to be placed on a floating hull.Initially the authors investigated, and discussed, what possibilities and limitations that were associated with the building. The authors then, separate from one another, created one alternative design each. The first of the two designs found its inspiration in different geometrical shapes, whereas the other was more of an organic design with a smooth and flowing architecture.

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleA new municipal building for the city of Nynäshamn, located in the most southern part of Greater Stockholm, including acitivity based offices, an art gallery, café and council chamber. The building lies inbetween two different but complementary public spaces which it adresses with two different "faces" while still being read as one and the same building. This idea, reminiscent of the image of the roman god Janus, has been my main focus through this project. Outwards, the faces both reflect and take an active roll in forming the character of these public spaces while the interweaving takes places inside the building where they sometimes are visually, although not physically connected, and sometimes closer to fade into one another.

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleOccupying an important place in the interiors, mirrors have progressively been an architectural decor in its own right in the private rooms, then in the reception rooms of the European great aristocratic houses in the XVII and XVIII centuries. The purpose of this thesis is to enlighten not only the development of mirrors as fixed decoration, but also their use in true architectural staging. Based on a two century scale and a substantial geographic area (France, Italy, Spain, Germany, Austria, Sweden), this work starts by a study of the development of these decors in the XVII century, by questioning the role of France in the definition and the circulation of models in Europe. Then, it focuses on the typologies of mirror cabinet and galleries, the most affected rooms by this kind of décor. Finally, in the last section, the mirror place in the architectural practice and their illusionist role in the interiors are studied

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThe study investigates the variety of expressive formulas and functional destinations of the photography production concerning the architectural renovation occurred in the city of Milan between 1861 and 1911. Design tool for architects and engineers, construction photography reveals itself as a fundamental tool of political legitimation for the new ruling class and illustrates the progress made by the city in terms of modernization. Through a historical reconstruction of the genre of construction photography, which also considers Italian and international cases, the study presents a detailed analysis of the Milanese phenomenon. Among the projects, the reform plan of the city center (1865-1878) developed by Giuseppe Mengoni and the restoration of the Sforza Castle (1893-1907) led by Luca Beltrami , as well as a number of minor operations. The inquiry considers the production by some of the main photographers working in the city and the iconographic apparatus of the most important illustrated press of the period, which during the late nineteenth century uses with increasing awareness the narrative qualities of the photographic medium. The evolution of the photographic language is therefore inquired with regard to his contribution to the construction of a national iconography of modernity , a phenomenon that sees the city of Milan in the front line.

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleAmidst the pan-European phenomenon of the rise of numerous collective burials in the second half of the 4th millennium BC appear so-called gallery graves in two distinct regions, notably in Hessia and Westphalia, in the Paris Basin, and in scarce numbers also in Belgium and the Netherlands. These collective burial vaults of diverse construction materials and of rectangular shape are organised in a short antechamber reserved to the deposit of collective grave good assemblages and in a long chamber sheltering numerous deceased individuals, which were deposited successively. The similarities of the structures of both main study regions in terms of architecture were already noted since the 20th century and the nature of the ties binding latter have since then been interrogated in the line of diffusionist approaches. The resulting presumptions of the direction of unilinear diffusionist processes changed according to the progress of dating methods and processing of radiocarbon samples. With the present research work, the issue was revived anew, and this time via a twofold comparative analysis: A first, empirical comparative analysis is destined to check at what level the collective structures correspond to a structural stereotype and to inform us in terms of potentially regional variations. A second, qualitative comparison included three Galeriegräber and six allées sépulcrales in order to determine to what degree their uses conferred or differed according to distinct architectural and regional features. The resulting observations are finally argued jointly concerning to what extent we finally can consider them the remains of a shared ideology of death

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleAs school rolls declined in the late nineteen seventies and recession set in, school building policy moved away from the large programmes of earlier times towards a more piecemeal approach giving priority to management over creation and expansion. Although few purpose-built schools have been planned in the last two decades, most of the work carried out in the country being confined to remodelling and extending buildings in use, new developments in school design have come to the forefront. Hampshire's architects department has played a pioneering role in the revival of british school architecture. An emphasis on aesthetics and the natural environment, the search for quality and variety, in reaction against system building, single out those new schools. The new directions, to be felt in interior design as much as in the appearance of buildings, seem to meet the expectations of the users we have interviewed in our survey. But conflicting pressures are still at play : the claims laid by personal, pedagogical and social needs cannot easily be addressed. And this revival, mainly confined to rural and suburban areas, bears its own limitations. Besides, school architecture cannot remain unscathed by the major changes introduced in the curriculum, in the process of decision making and in education funding. As local government influence declines and the range and type of schools widens, the role public architecture can play in the educational community is still an open issue

To optimize those devices, through the control of the optical and electrical confinements, a better modelling of oxidation process and a better understanding of optical properties of aluminum oxide (AlOx) is required. One part of this work is focusing on a throughout experimental study of AlGaAs oxidation kinetics, where I studied different important parameters such as wafer temperature, gallium composition, atmospheric pressure and mesa geometry. Then, I developed a new predictive model taking into account the process anisotropy, thus allowing a better temporal and spatial of AlAs oxidation front evolution. Delpino, Rossana.

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleDuring 1960 and 1970, several Domus department stores opened in the city centres of Sweden. By car, both local and long distance visitors could visit the Domus department store. As the external shopping centres and electronic commerce appeared, the number of visitors to the city malls (previously Domus department stores) has decreased. Nowadays, it is common for trade business to be forced to close the business because of the competition from external shopping centres and electronic commerce. This results in the fact that empty rooms nowadays are commonly found in city mall buildings. With the empty spaces, the city mall buildings have a limited range of goods and services. Less visitors to the city mall buildings result in less visitors to the place next to the city mall building, but also less visitors to the entire city centre. The purpose of this master thesis is to contribute with increased knowledge of how the existing city mall buildings can be redesigned as an idea and in its design. This because it is necessary to meet today’s challenges how the city mall buildings can contribute to a better sustainable and an attractive urban environment. The aim of this master thesis is to find a new design and function for Odenhuset in Trollhättan. The result should also be able to apply for similar existing city malls in central urban environments. The study was conducted by using the method called Research by Design. The method contains the three phases: pre-studies, design process and design analysis. Through Research by Design, it is possible to create a design proposal for the new function of the building where the proposal is based on scientific pre-studies. The first phase pre-studies includes site visits and literature studies. The city mall buildings that were visited for thestudy are either in the leading edge of Mixed Use or does the visited city mall building has many empty premises in the building. The conclusion of this master thesis is to find a new function for a centreclose city mall building, it is essential to accept the trade development. How trade has developed and changed is based on what human needs has looked like. Since external shopping malls and electronic commerce meetpeople nowadays needs better than the city malls does, the competition for customers has arisen. The result of the design proposal is therefore flexible and adaptable in order to make the city mall buildings once againbe able to meet new and future human needs. The design proposal and the new function of the city mall building should conveniently include different activities available for everyone. To combine different activities creates a wider range for the place. A wider range makes better conditions for the building to get more visitors and movement around the place. The design proposal gives space in the city mall building for activities thatmakes people’s everyday lives work better.
