This thesis examined the future office by interviewing 16 participants according to the Delphi method. Participants were given the opportunity to share their individual opinions related to ten introductory questions. All participants then continued the interview by participating in a feedback session that would form the basis of a future scenario for the office. According to the participants, the spread of Covid-19 has been a catalyst for the office's development. Environmental focus is high in the future when employees can take meetings from any place they prefer, instead of traveling the world to meet customers. Efficiency enables work regardless of workplace and thanks to digital tools and platforms, the employee can work anywhere at any time. What was somewhat more difficult to discern was the development of demand for offices. Although there were some aspects that all participants agreed on, it was possible to distinguish a lot of aspects that they thought about in different ways. There were different opinions from each stakeholder group regarding demand, rental levels, vacancies and other market factors that drive the market forward, as well as who will win and lose if the market moves on to a market characterised by flexible work.
Detta examensarbete undersökte det framtida kontoret genom att intervjua 16 deltagare enligt Delphi-metoden. Deltagarna fick möjlighet att dela sina individuella åsikter tillhörande tio inledande frågor. Alla deltagare fortsatte därefter intervjun genom att delta i en feedback- session som skulle ligga till grund för ett framtida scenario för kontoret. Enligt deltagarna har spridningen av Covid-19 varit en katalysator för kontorets utveckling. This thesis studied the paper-less office concept in the naval medical community. A paper-less office is defined as an "environment where the transmission, storage, and retrieval of information is not done through the medium of paper; rather, it is done through electronic data networks (Hicks, 1997)." The hypotheses were constructed in the following manner: The greater the resource, leadership, technology, etc. the higher the probability of success in creating a paper-less office." Data was gathered using a web-based survey approach. The survey was sent to all the Naval Medical Treatment Facilities (MTFs) Chief Information Officers (CIOs). Upon receipt of the survey data, SPSS software was used to conduct the statistical analysis. The objective of this thesis was to investigate what the Naval Medical Treatment Facility CIOs are doing to move towards a paper-less office and what the determinants are in developing a paper-less office. Although the hypotheses were not supported, the data identified both accomplishments (such as intranet creation, installation of fax server, etc.) and current activities undertaken by the MTFs CIOs in the paper-less office environment.

The environmental impact from our energy production and use today is a central concern for every major decision maker regardless of interest area. Together with transport and industry, housing and services is a major contributor to our energy consumption. In 2013 housing and services accounted for 38% of the energy consumption in Sweden Therefore, energy consumption in buildings has become an area of great importance with many technological solutions developing to meet the demands from investors and legislation. However, present solutions primarily aim to solve current problems, while ongoing technological and social development is setting new conditions for future buildings. This study investigates the future of office buildings heading towards a more flexible work environment. Advancement of technology accompanied with new emerging economic and social practices is facilitating the flexibility, as well as remote work and more out-of-office time, with possible decrease of the thermal energy produced by humans and equipment. In addition, desktop computers will be replaced by energy efficient thin clients, tablets, and phones while other equipment is also becoming more energy efficient, resulting in reduced secondary heat production and thus lower internal gains. This scenario supposes reduced internal gains, resulting in decreased cooling requirements but also increased heating requirements. However, an alternative scenario with increased internal gains is also likely, due to activity-based workplaces. Activity-based offices dispose of personal desks, instead utilising activity-based areas where employees choose an area or desk where to work, depending on their current task. Disposing of personal desks supports higher occupancy, as employees working elsewhere don’t occupy workplaces at the office. Thus, the amount of desks can be matched to the actual amount of employees working at the office during peak loads. These scenarios are developed, quantified, and used as a basis for the building simulation models. These models are then optimised to meet these new conditions, utilising simulation and multi objective optimisation. The key finding is that office buildings are resilient to changing conditions, and that a state-of-theart office from today meet the demands of tomorrow.
Miljöpåverkan från vår produktion och energianvändning är idag är en central fråga för varje större beslutsfattare oavsett intresse i området. Tillsammans med transport och industri, är bostäder och service en viktig bidragande orsak till vår energiförbrukning. År 2013 bostäder och service stod för 38% av energiförbrukningen i Sverige. Därför har energiförbrukningen i byggnader kommit att få stor betydelse, vilket driver utvecklingen mot nya tekniska lösningar för att möta kraven från investerare och lagstiftning. De nuvarande lösningarna syftar dock främst till att lösa nuvarande problem, samtidigt som teknisk och social utveckling skapar nya förutsättningar för framtida byggnader. Detta projekt undersöker framtiden för kontorsbyggnader, där utvecklingen verkar vara på väg mot distansarbete, outsourcing, och mer arbetstid spenderad utanför kontoret, vilket minskar mängden interna laster som värmer upp kontoret. Samtidigt utvecklas stationära datorer och annan utrustning som ersättas med energieffektiva tunna klienter, tablets, och smarta telefoner, vilket minskar de interna lasterna ytterligare. Ett alternativt scenario är aktivitetsbaserade kontor, där de anställda inte har sin egen arbetsyta, utan istället använder aktivitetsbaserade områden beroende på arbetsuppgift. Detta scenario kan tänkas leda till ökade interna laster då ytan kan användas mer effektivt, som kan kompensera för användning av mer energieffektiv kontorsutrustning. Projektet undersöker tänkbara framtida scenarier och hur framtida kontor kan anpassas för att möta dessa nya förutsättningar med hjälp av klimat- och energisimuleringsmjukvara. Resultaten tyder på flera tydliga trender i användningen av kontorsbyggnader, men effekterna av dessa trender kan resultera i flera scenarier. Därför projektet omfattar flera scenarier för att utvärdera spannet av möjligheter. Simuleringarna tyder på att kontorsbyggnader är motståndskraftiga mot förändrade villkor, och att ett modernt kontor från idag kan möta morgondagens behov.

Buildings last typically 50 to 100 years, and with climate change predicting hotter summers and warmer winters, buildings designed now and many existing buildings will need to cope with the future climate. The aim should be for buildings to provide comfortable environments for occupants without using excessive heating or cooling energy, which will exacerbate carbon emissions. This is particularly important for office buildings, as the productivity of occupants can be affected if conditions of the workplace are not ideal. Different models and scenarios for predicting future weather for the UK were studied in this thesis. These provide either monthly or daily data of weather variables for the next 100 years including daily maximum, minimum and average temperature, solar irradiation, wind speed and humidity levels. The data from two state-of-the-art models from the Hadley Centre in the UK, HadCM3 and HadRM3, were compared with real observed data to test their reliability, both with average values, as well as near-extreme values, which are useful for building design. It was found that for HadCM3, the temperature data has a severe cold-bias, but solar radiation matched well with real data. For HadRM3, the reverse is true. Its temperature data are fine, but there is an over-prediction of days with high solar radiation, even in days with high cloud cover as shown by an analysis of extra-terrestrial based clearness index values. For both models, the wind data is extremely high compared to real data. Test Reference Years (TRYs) and Design Summer Years (DSYs) were selected for 2020s, 2050s and 2080s using data from these climate models to estimate future energy usage for heating and cooling; and the feasibility of using natural ventilation as the sole means of providing summer cooling in future periods respectively. It was found that the existing methods for selecting TRYs and DSYs could be improved for future weather data. Since buildings respond to hourly changes to outside conditions, a number of algorithms were analysed and appropriate ones were developed to generate hourly weather data for dry bulb temperature (DBT), global irradiation (GSR) and diffuse solar irradiation (DSR) from daily data available from the climate models. These perform better than existing algorithms as they make use of all the daily parameters available. TRYs and DSYs with generated hourly values were run on a 2nd order room model that was developed during this research. This provides extra flexibility over existing building simulation programmes. It was found that the fall in heating demand is approximately equalled to the rise in cooling demand as a result of climate change up to 2080s in all four sites, and that natural ventilation alone would not be able to provide summer cooling in the UK in the near future. Office buildings complying with the Building Regulations of 2002 in the south of England would require air-conditioning by 2020s, those in the north of England by 2050s and those in Scotland by 2080s. However, the majority of existing office buildings in the UK have lower standards of specification. This thesis shows that cooling and emissions will be a major problem in the future climate. Making these buildings work in the future could prove to be an even greater challenge than to design energy efficient new buildings.

The combination of growth in gross domestic product, population, and employment in an area usually implies a growth in demand for workplace properties, somewhere employees can carry out work. This, in combination with a deindustrialization process where more and more people shift to jobs within the service sector has historically fuelled the demand for office space in most across the western world, not least in Sweden. During the year of 2020, due to the ongoing pandemic many employees have been forced or encouraged to work from home, telework. With so many employees teleworking and many organisations reconsidering where work should be carried out, the importance and future of offices is questioned. The aim of this thesis was to obtain a deeper understanding of how increased telework will affect the office space market. In doing so, four research questions were formulated assessing the effect of telework on the office space market, the drivers and obstacles towards increased telework, and finally the Corona pandemic effect on the future of telework. The approach of finding evidence to answer research questions was interviewing real estate professionals, employers and employees, conducting a survey, and performing an extensive literature review on previous work surrounding the topic. The result shows that telework will likely lead to decentralisation of offices, increased demand for flexibility, changes in requested office design and eventually a somewhat weakened demand for office space. Result further shows that the main drivers towards increased telework were found to be the event of a crisis, improved results, development of information and communication technology (ICT), and improved work-life balance. The main obstacles were found to be social isolation, loss of organisational culture, and teamwork suffering. Lastly, results show that the Corona pandemic has served as a catalyst for many to realise the potential of telework while simultaneously helping many to realise the importance of the office as a meeting place. In conclusion, the Corona pandemic has pushed the change towards increased telework and possibly, we need to reconsider what is implied with work in our society.
Kombinationen av tillväxt i bruttonationalprodukt, befolkning och antal arbetare i ett område medför vanligtvis en ökad efterfrågan på arbetsplatsfastigheter, någonstans arbetare kan utföra sitt arbete. Detta, i kombination med en avindustrialiseringsprocess där fler och fler människor jobbar inom tjänstesektorn har historiskt sett drivit på efterfrågan för kontor i de flesta länder i västvärlden, inte minst i Sverige. Under året 2020 har den pågående pandemin resulterat i att många arbetare tvingats eller uppmuntrats arbeta hemifrån, distansarbete. Med så många som arbetar på distans och då många organisationer ser över var arbete helst ska utföras, ifrågasätts betydelsen och framtiden av kontor. Syftet med detta arbete var att få en djupare förståelse för hur ökat distansarbete kan komma att påverka marknaden för kontorsyta. Därigenom formulerades fyra forskningsfrågor som granskar effekten av distansarbete på kontorsmarknaden, drivkrafterna och hindren för ökat distansarbete och slutligen Coronapandemins effekt på framtiden för distansarbete. Tillvägagångssättet för att hitta bevis som kan svara på forskningsfrågor var att intervjua yrkesverksamma inom fastighetsmarknaden, arbetsgivare, anställda, genomföra en enkätundersökning samt utföra en omfattande litteraturgranskning av tidigare arbete kring ämnet. Resultatet visar att distansarbete sannolikt kommer att leda till decentralisering av kontor, ökad efterfrågan på flexibilitet, förändringar i efterfrågad kontorsdesign och så småningom en något försvagad efterfrågan på kontor. Resultatet visar även att de viktigaste drivkrafterna mot ökat distansarbete är inträffandet av en kris, förbättrat resultat, utveckling av informations- och kommunikationsteknik och förbättrad balans mellan arbete och privatliv. De största hindren visade sig vara social isolering, försvagad organisationskultur och att samarbete kan gå förlorad. Slutligen visar resultatet att Coronapandemin har fungerat som en katalysator för många att inse potentialen med distansarbete samtidigt som många insett betydelsen av kontoret som mötesplats. Sammanfattningsvis har Coronapandemin drivit på förändringen mot ökat distansarbete och möjligtvis måste vi tänka om kring vad arbete betyder i vårt samhälle.

Activity Based Workplaces (ABW) is the latest trend within the office layout for knowledge workers. The design and layout of an activity based workplace is based on the worker's need to carry out different tasks, in the most efficient way. In order to achieve that the office is divided into different zones and the workers doesn't have a private work-station. The biggest advantage with ABW is a space efficient working environment that promotes knowledge- and information sharing within the company’s different departments. The purpose of this master thesis is to investigate how to implement Activity Based Workplaces in an efficient way. In order to do that a literature review on existing research and a qualitative study have been carried out. The qualitative study is based on interviews with key persons at five different companies that have implemented ABW or had the intention to do so. The transition to ABW have been studied in three different blocks; the decision process, the implementation process and the outcome and user perspective. The analysis of the results from the qualitative study shows that the transition includes a lot of different challenges. One of the biggest challenge that the management has to overcome is to assure the co-workers that the implementation of an Activity Based Workplace will bring positive effects to the company. In order to achieve that it is important that the management acquires the right knowledge to successfully handle the implementation and is able to create a clear strategy of how to do so. During the process it is important to involve the co-workers in order to identify their needs. After all it is the co-workers who carry out the activities that the workplace is supposed to support. The involvement of the co-workers will also create a more positive attitude towards the concept of ABW. After the implementation of the Activity Based Workplace the challenge lies within the ability to constantly adapt and develop the office space after the changing needs of the company and its co-workers. The co-workers changing needs are hard to identify in advance, therefore it is important to adapt the workplace when these needs are identified. The demand for space efficient offices will grow in the future and in comparison to a traditional office space layout, we believe the Activity Based Workplace allows for a workplace better suited for the needs of the company and its co-workers.
Aktivitetsbaserade arbetsplatser (förkortas ABW) är den hetaste kontorstrenden för tillfället. Konceptet ABW bygger på att utforma kontoret och dess arbetsplatser utifrån personalens behov. På ett aktivitetsbaserat kontor ska personalens arbetsuppgifter styra valet av arbetsplats och personalen har därför inga fasta arbetsplatser. De stora fördelarna med ABW är en förbättrad och mer yteffektiv arbetsmiljö som främjar informations- och kunskapsutbyte mellan ett företags eller en organisations olika avdelningar. Syftet med detta examensarbete är att undersöka hur aktivitetsbaserade arbetsplatser kan implementeras på ett effektivt sätt. Syftet har besvarats genom en litteraturstudie, bestående av aktuell forskning inom området, samt en kvalitativ empirisk studie av fem stycken företag som antingen har implementerat ABW eller haft för avsikt att göra detta. Hos dessa fem företag har olika nyckelpersoner intervjuats kring konceptet ABW. Övergången till ABW har studerats ur tre block; beslutsprocessen, implementeringsprocessen samt resultat och användarperspektiv. Analysen av resultaten från den empiriska studien visar att utmaningarna vid en implementering av ett aktivitetsbaserat kontor är många. En av de största utmaningarna är att företagets ledning lyckas övertyga personalen om att ett aktivitetsbaserat kontor kommer att gynna verksamheten och skapa en arbetsmiljö som på ett bättre sätt tillgodoser medarbetarnas behov. För att lyckas med detta krävs det att ledningen på företaget tillskansar sig kunskap om vad ABW är för någonting och har en tydlig strategi kring hur implementeringen ska genomföras. Under implementeringsprocessen är det viktigt att låta personalen vara delaktig för att på bästa sätt kunna tillgodose deras behov. Att låta personalen vara delaktig i processen resulterar också i en högre acceptans gentemot det nya aktivitetsbaserade konceptet. Efter implementeringen av det aktivitetsbaserade kontoret ligger utmaningen i att fortsätta utveckla kontoret. Personalens behov förändras med tiden och det kan även vara svårt att på förhand tillgodose samtliga behov vilket innebär att ett kontinuerligt utvärderingsarbete av kontorets layout är viktigt. En implementering av ABW är ingen punktinsats som avslutas efter flytten till det nya kontoret. Efterfrågan på yteffektiva kontor kommer i framtiden att öka och i jämförelse med ett traditionellt öppet kontorslandskap skapar ABW en arbetsmiljö som vi tror på ett bättre sätt tillgodoser företagens och dess personals behov.

The Second World War has captured the interest of people around the world, and has fascinated generations of historians. Despite the time that has elapsed since the events, and the opening of the official papers in 1977, one thing remains the same, the under-examination of British foreign policy during the war. The history that has been written has struggled to break from the picture Churchill painted in ‘The Second World War’, presenting the inevitability of the Anglo-American special relationship and minimising the important contributions of Eden and the Foreign Office. In an exercise in anti-Whig history, this thesis attempts to right this historical wrong, and suggest that this was not the only outcome available to Britain as a result of the Second World War. By examining the Foreign Office records, it presents a different picture: that traditional British foreign policy was still going strong, and that the Foreign Office, with Eden at the helm, had its own vision for the post-war world. In this vision Britain would remain a great power with an independent foreign policy, and would be involved in a global post-war organisation designed to maintain European and World peace. This work will examine the origins of this vision, and trace its development through the early years of the war, highlighting the plans that were brought forward and the efforts that were made to make this official policy. It will also assess the reasons for the apparent failure of this policy, and offer suggestions of possible outcomes for Britain had it been implemented. This vision fundamentally differed from Churchill’s, but ultimately could have supplemented it, had the great man allowed it to do so.

During the last year and a half, the current Covid-19 pandemic has changed many aspects ofour lives, and while we cannot yet for sure say what changes are here to stay, we do knowthat we might expect a new everyday-normal. This study aims to investigate the future ofoffice space and whether we can expect a change in demand for the required space needed,and in addition, discover what trends are on the rise. The study is based on qualitative data in the form of scenario-based interviews with principalactors within the industry, including real estate companies and tenants active within different sectors. By grounding my research and scenarios on scientific theories, such as behavior aleconomics, the rational expectations theory, symbolic interactionism and the familiar theory of demand and supply, well-grounded reasoning for future office demand and trends has been made. The results of this study suggest that a significant change in terms of the required office space needed is unlikely. A majority of the interviewees believes that we will bounce back tobusiness as usual and that the office space required decreases with no more than five percent. Organizations and real estate companies will base their decision on rational expectations, inaccordance with the rational expectations theory. Furthermore, the study highlights five main trends in the future. The first being a redesign of the office layout with additional smaller meeting rooms dedicated for focus-oriented work. The second one, elevated experience/services where full-services buildings will have to offer its tenants elevated and enhanced experiences in order to attract employees back to the office. The third the meidentified is increased expectations of employers which employees will put on their employers where flexible working policies will be demanded. The fourth is named change of purpose where the office will transform from solely being a place to get things done to becoming an even more social place and an important attractor for new talent. And lastly, time, shedding light on the importance of letting some time pass after returning back to “normal” in order for organizations to avoid making poor and costly judgment calls.
Under drygt ett år har många aspekter av våra liv förändrats till följd av den pågående Covid19 pandemin. Medan det inte är klarlagt vilka förändringar som är här för att stanna, är det säkert att säga att ett nytt normalläge är att vänta sig. Denna studie syftar till att undersökaframtidens kontorsbehov och huruvida vi kan förvänta oss en förändring i efterfråga på kontorsyta, samt till att belysa framtida kontorstrender. Studien baseras på kvalitativ data i form av scenariobaserade intervjuer med principiella aktörer verksamma inom branschen. Dessa inkluderar fastighetsbolag, projektutvecklare samt hyresgäster inom olika sektorer. Genom att grunda scenarierna på vetenskapliga teorier,såsom beteendeekonomi, teorin om rationella förväntningar, symbolisk interaktionism ochden bekanta teorin om utbud och efterfråga, har välgrundade resonemang om framtidens kontors efterfråga förts. Resultaten tyder på att det är osannolikt att en signifikant förändring i efterfråga på kontorsyta kommer att äga rum. Majoroiteten av intervjupersonerna tror att vi eller mindre kommer att återgå till våra kontor utan en större förändring sett till kontorsyta. I det fall kontorsytan minskar, minskar den inte med mer än fem procent. Vidare baserar företag deras beslut pår ationella förväntningar, i enlighet med teorin om rationella förväntningar. Därutöver identifierar studien fem framtida kontorstrender. Första trenden är en omfördelning av kontorsyta med fler, mindre mötesrum avsedda för fokuserat arbete. Den andra trenden ären förhöjd kontorsupplevelse med fullservicekontorsfastigheter där hyresgäster erbjuds en förhöjd jobbupplevelse för att locka tillbaka anställda till kontoret. Tredje trenden är ökade förväntningar på arbetsgivare där arbetstagare kommer att efterfråga en mer flexibel och dynamisk jobbpolicy. Förändrat kontorssyfte utgör den fjärde trenden där framtidens kontor blir mer än enbart en plats att arbeta på, utan även en plats för social interaktion och för att attrahera nya talanger. Sist men inte minst, tid, i syfte att belysa vikten av att låta en viss essentiell tid passera efter man återgått till en mer normal vardag, detta för att undvika kostsamma och icke-fördelaktiga affärsbeslut.

The research in this thesis will focus on China’s increasingly important role in the global film industry, including the dynamic between the Chinese government, the Chinese film industry, and Hollywood. The first chapter gives a comprehensive overview of the history of artistic trends in postsocialist Chinese film since 1979. The following chapter provides a history of the commercial and economic developments regarding the Chinese film industry after Deng Xiaoping’s economic reforms and open door policy. In the third chapter, a detailed analysis of the different Chinese state entities and their functions provide insight into the history of the political and regulatory framework of the Chinese film industry. The fourth chapter examines Hollywood’s role and response to China’s burgeoning film industry and market including case studies of top western film companies that have been heavily involved with China. It also focuses on the challenges the domestic Chinese film industry faces in response to government censorship and competition from Hollywood. Finally, the conclusion offers predictions for the future state of the Chinese film industry, and discusses the implications surrounding the growing relationship between the China and Hollywood.

The contemporary economic, social and environmental context is at the edge of change. Governments, individuals and, companies need to take drastic measures to save the planet Earth. It has been globally communicated and understood that our lifestyle is not sustainable. If we do not transform how we produce, consume, travel and live, the future generation’s ability to evolve in the world we know today might be compromised. The study is using the Circular Economy as a way to rethink industries and furniture usage. In this case, the researcher inquired the office furniture industries. The goal at the end of the research process is to find an alternative to the linear business model established in the office furniture industry. The project is providing a holistic vision on the furniture’s journey from production to recycling. The proposal is based on the analysis of the current state of the office furniture industry to transform the linear business model to a circular model. The research was mainly lead thanks to three collaborators. The most important collaborator in the study is Steelcase. The company is the leader and expert in the office furniture field. Thanks to one year of experience at Steelcase, the researcher acquired deep knowledge about the office furniture industry in the heart of the industry of interest. It allowed to collect valuable information to understand the challenges office furniture industries are facing. And, finally, analyse the potential and challenges the transition from a linear to a circular business model represents for office furniture companies. The researcher also gained knowledge from dealers working at Blanchet-D’Huismes, who have a lot of expertise about the workplace and the office furniture industry. Finally, the last collaborator involved in the study is WeWork, a company renting workplaces, which represent the new business models appearing in the office industry. The research is lead from a designer’s point of view. Thanks to the experience and conversations with professionals from the workplace industry, valuable knowledge was acquired. With a deep understanding of the office furniture industry, the researcher designed a circular model. In order to share the findings of the research, the model was visualised with diagrams which allow anyone from the office furniture industry to understand the project. The goal of the project is to communicate the issues with the current model and propose a new approach to how the workplace could be furnished in the future.

This project explores the historic, current and future services for individuals with developmental disabilities in New York State in a series of related studies presented in three chapters. The first chapter examines the history of how modern services for individuals with developmental disabilities were established. The second chapter examines the social, economic and political factors that are driving the first major changes in services for individuals with developmental disabilities since the early 1970's. The first two chapters will demonstrate similar trends that caused major changes in the 1970's and the major changes currently happening in service delivery. The final chapter examines the proposed services that will be offered to individuals in New York State, the implementation of the new services, potential barriers to implementation and both the intended and unintended consequences of the new services.

United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) describes its vision for the global SOF network (GSN) as a globally networked force of special operations forces (SOF), interagency partners, and allies able to respond rapidly and persistently to regional contingencies and threats to stability. USSOCOM’s goals for the GSN are supported by three unique elements: capacity building, low-level presence, and the sum total of access agreements and posturing in the form of responsiveness. The command’s Special Operations Liaison Officer (SOLO) program embodies these three elements. In a time of shrinking budgets and personnel drawdowns, USSOCOM and supported special operations component commands are faced with critical decisions about shaping their respective forces for the future. This capstone focuses on the United States Army Special Forces (SF) officers’ role in the SOLO program by utilizing a multimethod approach to address concerns presented by SOLO program managers. To this end, we have presented three viable courses of action (COAs) for USSOCOM to pursue, in partnership with relevant stakeholders, for a renewed SOLO program. The COAs include: 1) enhancing the status quo, 2) capitalizing on historical lessons, and 3) aligning with current United States Army Special Operations Command (USASOC) initiatives. While current demands are significant, we can always look to our past to see our future.

The Matrix Predictive Uniform Law Enforcement Inventory (M-PULSE ™) is a self-report, actuarial instrument used to predict job performance and liability risk, as well as assist law enforcement agencies in selecting qualified candidates. This study examined whether there is a statistically significant difference between two clusters of candidates' Empirical Scales scores as they relate to applicants' mean scale score differences on the M-Pulse™ liability scales. This study was conducted in an effort to confirm predictive and ecological validity and used archived data from a proprietary database retained by MHS, Inc. This data consisted of 1,000 randomly selected individuals from a normalized database of 5,000 individuals who had previously completed the M-PULSE ™ and were subsequently hired by a law enforcement agency. A series of independent-samples t-tests were conducted to compare each of the M-Pulse ™ liability scales scores of law enforcement applicants in each cluster. Post hoc Bonferroni correction resulted in &agr; ≤ .003. Statistically significant differences were found in Potential for Resignation when comparing scores for Cluster 1 (M = 49.49, SD = 9.85) and Cluster 2 (M = 51.85, SD = 10.97); t(998) = -3.545, p < .003; d = .226 and in Potential for Termination: Cluster 1 (M = 49.05, SD = 9.48) and Cluster 2 ( M = 52.14, SD = 10.57); t(998) = -4.833, p < .003; d = .308. This study suggests the M-PULSE ™ can tease out candidates who show a propensity to prematurely resign or be terminated. Predicting foreseeable liability risks helps law enforcement agencies manage ecological issues that affect officers.

This thesis is exploratory in nature and looks at the history, current status, and prospects of minority women in the officer corps of the U.S. Navy. The recruiting, promotion, and retention of these women is compared to that of whites, using information provided by the Defense Manpower Data Center and other sources. Research focuses on the period from 1972 through 1990. Overall, the study shows a very positive trend occurring for minority women, especially blacks, with steadily increasing representation in the officer corps. However, potential problem areas are found in the distribution of minority women across occupations and in their related prospects for advancement. In addition, evidence suggests that future participation by minority women may be adversely influenced by the planned reduction of Navy personnel. Several recommendations for further research are made, including the longitudinal tracking of minority women through their promotional flowpoints,

While eschatology provides the abiding horizon of Jürgen Moltmann's theology, the centre of his thinking, which conditions the contours of that horizon, is christology. In Part One, this thesis provides an analysis of the methodological considerations which shape Moltmann's christology. It demonstrates how Moltmann's elected hermeneutic strategy of interpreting Jesus within the horizon of promise enables his christology to determine the eschatological structure of his theology. Part Two then examines the actual product of this method. It analyses the succession of christologically determined models of the relationship between eschatology and history that can be found in moving from Theology of Hope to The Coming of God. Both the conceptual development of one idea from another, as well as the chronological development of ideas over time, are thus examined. In this thesis, however, analysis also serves the purpose of theological construction. Where Moltmann's proposals are seen to run into difficulty suggestions are made for how the tensions observed may be resolved in accordance with Moltmann's own root theological assumptions. The fundamental problem of Moltmann's eschatology is perceived to be the lack of an explicit account of how eschatological transcendence is related to historical becoming. In Part One this leads to the provision of a model of the inter-relationship of Jesus' universal (eschatological) significance and his particular relevance for the multifarious situations of the present creation. In Part Two this same problem leads to the construction of a christological model in which Jesus becomes in time who he is in adventus (the transcendent future). Achieving this comprehensively necessitates the provision of an account of the distinction and unity of the divinity and humanity of the one person of Christ. Only so does it prove possible to distinguish appropriately between what the one future of the new creation will mean for God and creation respectively. The thesis concludes by demonstrating the breadth of applicability of the christological insights developed by utilising them to address the question of the relationship between the economic and immanent Trinity.

This thesis examines the Citizen Military Forces (CMF) from 1947 until it ceased to exist under that name with the release of the report of the Millar Inquiry in 1974. This thesis examines three broad areas: the organizational changes that the CMF adopted or had imposed upon it; the political decision-making surrounding the CMF; and a social analysis of the CMF which questions the viability and validity of a number of the CMF???s long held precepts. The thesis will show that the majority of circumstances and decisions surrounding the CMF were beyond its control. For example, the CMF could not change the prevailing military thought of the post-war period which emphasized increasingly the role of smaller, professional, readily-available armies. The first three chapters recount the CMF???s ???heyday??? in which the Army, assisted by National Service after 1950, was based around it and its influence at the highest levels was strongest. The next two chapters chronicle the background to Australia???s adoption of the ???Pentropic??? organization and the repercussions this had on the CMF. Chapters Six and Seven examine the consequences of the introduction of a second compulsory service scheme and the concomitant result which precluded the CMF from operational service in Vietnam. Chapters Eight and Nine deal with the Millar Inquiry, which offered the CMF a new hope, but in some regards, brought forth little beneficial gains for the CMF. The final chapters analyze some of the characteristics unique to the CMF, such as territorial affiliation, high turnover rates amongst the rank and file and the concept of the ???brilliant amateur???. This thesis concludes that, despite the mixed performance of the CMF, there is still a place for the citizen soldier in contemporary warfare, but far more consideration at the highest political and military levels must be given to the peculiar and difficult, but by no means insurmountable, problems citizen soldiering encounters in Australia.

Newly-minted naval officers will be judged by seniors on the merits of their writing skills. Required undergraduate English composition courses do not prepare officers to write clear, well-organized correspondence required during active duty service. This project answers the following question: will written communication training provided to midshipmen prior to commissioning enable them to report to their first assignments with the written communication knowledge and skills to communicate their intentions clearly at first attempt and write with impact, thus decreasing the administrative burden on senior officers. To answer this question, we provided professional writing training in the form of interactive modules to 17 NROTC midshipmen at Marquette University and then assessed their understanding and capacity to apply the concepts. Midshipmen earned scores that met or exceeded our criteria for comprehension of the guidelines for professional writing. In addition, midshipmen interview responses were overwhelmingly receptive to this training, and, as a result, 100-percent of midshipmen surveyed felt better prepared for future professional writing tasks. We recommend that the NETC mandate standardized writing training for midshipmen prior to their commissioning. Additionally, we recommend that the NPS partner with the NETC to assist in creating a distance-learning tutorial for professional writing

The organization of the French civil service has undergone profound changes since the early 2000s. This thesis examines the capacity of the teacher recruitment and management system to meet the challenges of attractiveness, efficiency and diversity at the heart of current projects to modernize the education system. The first chapter examines the gender neutrality of the recruitment process for secondary school teachers. It reveals that evaluation biases tend to favor the minority gender and contribute to strengthening the gender diversity within university disciplines. The second and third chapters examine the ability of monetary incentives, teacher demand and degree requirements to attract more and potentially better candidates for teaching positions. An increase in the level of qualification required to teach (from bachelor's to master's level) does not seem to improve the effectiveness of recruitment in terms of attractiveness, skills profiles and diversity. The fourth chapter examines the relationship between absenteeism, mobility and working conditions of teachers. It shows that schools and school principals significantly influence teacher absences, turnover and psychological well-being. Lack of hierarchical support, hostile behaviors and work intensity seem to play a critical role

Postsecondary education is constantly changing and the role of the chief student affairs officer must evolve to meet the demands of the shifting social, political, and administrative needs of their student population and institution. The intent of this study was to identify the knowledge, skills, and competencies required of chief student affairs officers to be effective and successful in contemporary and future higher education contexts. To provide clarity to the obligations of the executive-level role, the study offers an understanding the complexity of chief student affairs officers’ responsibilities in a rapidly shifting postsecondary environment. Participants of the study were current chief student affairs officers who engaged in organized groups based on location, institutional type, athletic conference, or state higher education system. Through a qualitative methodology, with semi-structured, group interviews, the study allowed for data gathering from multiple chief student affairs officers at varied institutional types and locations. Data were collected from 13 focus groups with a total of 68 participants during either during established meetings or via online video conferencing.

Findings of the study contribute to the knowledge base of effective practice and preparation for successful and effective chief student affairs officers and provide evidence-based data from which to build continuing education and ongoing professional development. Recommendations are offered for individuals currently in the chief student affairs officer position, those aspiring to the role, graduate programs in doctoral education, search firms, and professional associations that provide ongoing educational offerings for executive leaders in postsecondary education.

Till följd av digitaliseringens framfart förändras företags och medarbetares arbetssätt varpå nya krav ställs på kontors- och hyresavtalsutformningar. De krav som ställs idag kan sammanfattas med ett ord – flexibilitet. Den ökade efterfrågan på flexibla hyresavtal resulterar i en mängd förändringar på fastighetsmarknaden för kontor. Syftet med studien var att få en inblick i fastighetsägares och hyresgästers attityder gentemot flexibla hyresavtal för att kunna avgöra om det är fördelaktigt för parterna att använda sig utav flexibla hyresavtal jämfört med traditionella hyresavtal. Studien använde sig utav en kvalitativ forskningsmetod där semistrukturerade intervjuer genomfördes medfastighetsägare, hyresgäster och branschrepresentanter. Studien visade att fastighetsägare och operatörer av flexibla kontorslokaler redan har börjat innovera nya koncept och produkter för att rätta sig efter kontorsmarknadens utveckling för att kunna tillgodose förändrade behov hos företagare. Trenden visar att antalet flexibla hyresavtal fortsätter att öka och därför bör fastighetsägare ha en affärsstrategi för detta.Den slutsats som kunde dras utifrån denna studie är att flexibla hyresavtal är fördelaktigt förbåda parter men att det krävs lite olika implementeringar för att det ska bli mer fördelaktigtför fastighetsägaren. Fastighetsägare som kan tillhandahålla en flexibel produkt som tarhänsyn till dagens attityder kommer troligtvis befinna sig i en starkare position påkontorsmarknaden på lång sikt. Studien visade att den ökade efterfrågan på flexibilitetgrundar sig i att traditionella hyresavtal inte tar hänsyn till den takt företag förändras idag.Vidare är det hög tid att reformera dagens hyresmodell och lagstiftning så att de passar dagensförändrade samhälle och möjliggör implementeringen av det flexibla hyresavtalet. Ökadflexibilitet i hyresmodellen skulle innebära att fastighetsägare kan bidra till ett mer effektivt resursutnyttjande och samtidigt ta hänsyn till hyresgästernas förändrade behov.
The way employees and companies work are changing. The progress of digitalisation iscreating new demands on the design of office and rental contracts. The tenants now require greater flexibility which has resulted in numerous changes to the real estate market for offices. A study was carried out to investigate the attitudes property owners and tenants have towards flexible leases. The purpose was to determine whether it is advantageous for both parties to use flexible leases compared to traditional leases. The study used a qualitative research method in which semi-structured interviews were conducted with property owners,tenants and representatives in the property industry. The study shows that property owners and operators of flexible office space have already begun to innovate new concepts and products in order to meet the changing needs ofbusiness owners. The trend indicates that the number of flexible leases continues to increase thus property owners should adapt accordingly. Furthermore, the study highlighted that flexible leases can be advantageous to both parties,but further implementations are required to also make it beneficial for the property owner.That being said, the property owners that can provide flexible contracts are likely to be in a stronger position in the long term. The study also suggested that traditional leases do not take into account companies' rate of change which subsequently explains the reason for the increased demand for flexibility. In addition, the current rental model and legislation must be reformed to suit today's changing society to enable the implementation of the flexible lease agreement. Increased flexibility inthe rental model would mean that property owners can contribute to a more efficient use of resources and simultaneously take into account the changing needs tenants' have.

Syftet med undersökningen var att försöka definiera vad sjömanseleverna i årskurs 2 och 3 på gymnasiet hade för framtidsplaner när det gällde fortsatt arbete till sjöss som matros, motorman. Dessutom undersöktes hur många som planerade att läsa vidare till sjökapten eller sjöingenjör, samt hur stort intresset av att söka arbete utomlands var bland eleverna. Undersökningen byggde på en kvantitativ metod där resultatet baserades på enkätsvar från fyra olika skolor och totalt 114 svarande elever. Intresset för att fortsätta arbeta som matros var något större än att arbeta som motorman. Majoriteten av de tillfrågade eleverna planerade vidare studier medan endast ett fåtal av de tillfrågade planerade att enbart fortsätta arbeta som matros och motorman. Närmare 80 % av de tillfrågade var intresserade av att söka arbete utomlands. Många av de tillfrågade planerade läsa vidare och frågan är hur branschen skall säkra tillväxten bland matroser och motormän i Sverige?


The purpose of this thesis has been to try and define future plans among merchant marine seamen students. Regarding work as able bodied seaman, oiler or to study to deck or engine officer. And also see the interest to apply for marine job positions outside Sweden for example in Norway. The thesis is based on a quantitative method where the result is based on an inquiry from four schools and answers from 114 students. The interest to continue working as able bodied seamen was higher than to continue working as oiler. The majority of the students planed deck or engine officer studies. Only a few of the students planed only to continue as able bodied seamen or oiler. Almost 80 % of the students answered they were interested to apply for marine job positions abroad. Many students planed further studies and the question is how the shipping business should secure the growth of Swedish merchant marine seamen?

The education of hospital doctors has been criticised because of its large service commitment and poor educational structure, and this particularly applies to the hospital Senior House Officer (SHO) component of general practice vocational training. This study set out to assess the effect of local interventions to improve SHO education. This required the design and application of a system to assess SHO educational posts, a classification of interventions and the use of a local research cycle to determine the effect of interventions applied. The study involved 80 doctors training for general practice, working in 137 SHO posts, at two district general hospitals in Southern England between 1993 and 1999. Established principles of the action research cycle were applied. These linked quantitative and qualitative research on the local problems in SHO education, with design of interventions to resolve these problems, the action of applying an intervention and then further research to determine if the problems had resolved. Quantitative research involved the design, piloting and assessment of an SHO Educational Audit Project (SEAP) questionnaire applied sixmonthly.qualitative methods involved monthly focus groups, interviews and a field diary. Interventions included letters, feedback, facilitated group discussion, interviews, and external visits. Changes were seen in rates of appraisal, teaching, attendance, and contact with GP mentors. An intervention to increase the amount of induction to SHO posts was ineffective. The number of completed action research cycles applied (seven) and duration of the study (six years) exceeded those seen within the existing literature on action research. This study was also the first description of action research in the setting of medical education for SHOs. It was concluded that the action research cycle was a framework in which acknowledged research methods were placed and should not be seen as a method in its own right. The action research cycle links the disciplines of research, learning theory and organizational development. It is a cycle that can contribute to the individual learning of a professional because it gathers evidence of change using research methods rather than intuition and an assumption of change. Action research can be seen as an improved model for professional learning because it provides focused information and feedback. A model for future general practice training at SHO level was also identified from the study results. This was an "elective" style period where the doctor selected several specialities to work within an outpatient or community setting. The model included induction, appraisal and day-to-day supervision, along with regular contact with general practice and the general practice trainer. Other theory generated by this study related to thresholds for behaviour change, achieving enduring change, the three components that contribute to change (setting, intervention and follow up), the types of educational supervisor and an apprentice cycle for learning. The system for assessing the standards of SHO education, the range of interventions and the action research model used in this study are applicable to other similar settings. The outcomes in other settings will depend on local circumstances and have to be determined by further local research with an action research framework. Since completion of this study, new posts for GP education have been piloted and financed by the Director of Postgraduate General Practice Education throughout the Wessex region. Course organisers specifically for SHO education have been appointed for every vocational training scheme in Wessex and have been able to apply the principles of action research using the monitoring system outlined in this study.

Den här undersökningen handlade om hur idag aktiva, kvinnliga nautiker i den svenska handelsflottan upplever sin situation ombord och hur de ser på sin framtid till sjöss. Syftet var att utröna ifall nautikeryrket i sin nuvarande form passar kvinnor och ifall något kan göras för att göra det mer attraktivt för dem. Bakgrunden var den låga andelen kvinnor inom yrket.   Jag valde en kvalitativ undersökningsmetod där jag analyserade data från fem semistrukturerade intervjuer. Denna metod valdes eftersom jag framförallt ville förstå den genusproblematik som kunde finnas ombord.   Resultatet visade att det inte finns något i nautikerns arbetsuppgifter som inte kan utföras av en kvinna och att särbehandling p.g.a. kön och sexuella trakasserier drabbar kvinnliga nautiker i begränsad omfattning. Det framkom att det största hindret för en framtid till sjöss är familjebildning och detta gjorde det även svårt att komma med konkreta förslag om hur yrket skulle bli mer attraktivt för kvinnor.
This thesis was a research on the onboard experience of female officers, today active in the Swedish merchant fleet, and of their thoughts regarding their future at sea. The purpose was to clarify whether the deck officer profession as of today is suited for women and if something could be done to make it more attractive to them; this in view of the small relative number of women in the profession.   I chose the qualitative research design, analyzing data from five semi-structured interviews. This method was used since my primary objective was to understand possible gender issues onboard.   The result showed that there is nothing in a deck officer’s work that can not be performed by a woman. Furthermore, the result pointed to the conclusion that female deck officers are subject to gender related discrimination and sexual harassment, but scarcely. The greatest obstacle for a future at sea proved to be family related, which also made more specific suggestions on how to make the deck officer profession more attractive to women difficult.

Today, the main research field for the automotive industry is to find solutions for active safety. In order to perceive the surrounding environment, tracking nearby traffic objects plays an important role. Validation of the tracking performance is often done in staged traffic scenarios, where additional sensors, mounted on the vehicles, are used to obtain their true positions and velocities. The difficulty of evaluating the tracking performance complicates its development. An alternative approach studied in this thesis, is to record sequences and use non-causal algorithms, such as smoothing, instead of filtering to estimate the true target states. With this method, validation data for online, causal, target tracking algorithms can be obtained for all traffic scenarios without the need of extra sensors. We investigate how non-causal algorithms affects the target tracking performance using multiple sensors and dynamic models of different complexity. This is done to evaluate real-time methods against estimates obtained from non-causal filtering. Two different measurement units, a monocular camera and a LIDAR sensor, and two dynamic models are evaluated and compared using both causal and non-causal methods. The system is tested in two single object scenarios where ground truth is available and in three multi object scenarios without ground truth. Results from the two single object scenarios shows that tracking using only a monocular camera performs poorly since it is unable to measure the distance to objects. Here, a complementary LIDAR sensor improves the tracking performance significantly. The dynamic models are shown to have a small impact on the tracking performance, while the non-causal application gives a distinct improvement when tracking objects at large distances. Since the sequence can be reversed, the non-causal estimates are propagated from more certain states when the target is closer to the ego vehicle. For multiple object tracking, we find that correct associations between measurements and tracks are crucial for improving the tracking performance with non-causal algorithms.

The office furniture is a typical tradition industries, facing the economical problem in the laborer , cost and the lack of material resources. This study tries to bring the experiential scenario design(ESD) into the office furniture industries that urgent to improve themselves toward modernism. The experiential scenario design consists the characteristic of anticipation , visualization, and easy to narrate. Therefore, this study try to forecast the tendency of office working style by using ESD during the design planning phase. According to the process of design planning , this study divides the experiential scenario design into three parts: (1)Using Delphi method to compromise the professional suggestions that from the related experts, and to forecast of office working style. (2) Holding the design workshop of experiential scenario design to catch the lifestyle, and organize the designers as in the future .They’re able to image the changes between human and environment, and try to visualize their imagination. (3)Holding two focus groups about “the future office furniture” in Shanhai after the phase of the design development, and comparing the designs that developed from both Taipei and Shanhai, Within the focus groups, this study collects the related experts’ suggestion about the tendency of office working style ,and ranks of the designs. All the results are used as references for the next design development. Finally comes a experiential scenario design model which based on selected expert’s Delphi. The findings of using the mentioned model are as follows: (1)Suggestions that from the office related experts are providing cheerful and relaxed working environment; planning the whole working space with right moving path and equipments; personalizing the changeable equipments ; providing a social space for the mobile workers. (2)developing 12 designs and scenarios that fit coming metropolitan office life style for the soho and mobile workers. (3) concluding the key concerns of designing the office furniture in the next five years : functions that can be changed flexibly (module, lightweight, flexible); making the worker has his own sense of belonging. (personalize, store space);being able to connect with digital device; wanting well social and interactive atmosphere(leisure,funny and interactive) This study fills the lack of conventional industries by catching lifestyle and collecting suggestion that from experts, sharing the experience to the industries, and creating the innovation with satisfaction from both the consumers and experts. The results for the cooperation between NSC and Aurora are converged through three design and development phases, and generate a feasible furniture design concept for the mobile office workers.

This thesis focuses on the design of future office equipment.Based on the result of various case studies, an emphasis is put on the inner desire of the user, and the method of scenario design is conceived as a suitable tool for the creation of the new office enviroment. The design of emotional, personalized and mobile furniture are the core issue to this thesis. One the on hand, the scenarios offer a useful way to the visualization of working enviroment inthe future, on the ohter hand, description of the scrip casts light on the lifestyles in the future that helps to unveil new demands. To conclude, htis thesis proposes a four-stage methodology for future office design: presumption fo working environment - scrip - transformation of design language, and the designer will thus be able to visualize defferent individual demands for future office equipment and in result create a successful design for the office in the future.

It is time for thinking more about preserving regional characters rather than pursuing for the international style. Design can get inspirations from traditional buildings – the right scale, the courtyard space combination, the typical materials application and so on. Thus, for the future office design of Beijing, preserving its own characters and creating an environment fitting for its own culture and people is the keystone. Based on those research and analysis about Chinese office development history, culture background, current office layouts and so on, I provide a prototype – a novel office layout that can respond to emerging work pattern requirements and Chinese culture-work relationship. This case-study is a teaching case to discuss the key serving success factors in bookkeeping office. We use depth interview with bookkeeping boss and customers to collect data which is needed in this study. Current survey by human web site showed that 90% office workers want to start an enterprise, but they hesitant and undecided, and thus missed good investment opportunities. If they have the concept of bookkeeping and make good use of the accounting report, then they will easily achieve entrepreneurial target. The main purpose of this teaching case is focus on the entrepreneurial process of WU bookkeeping office in Tainan. This study divided into two parts, the first part of this full case context which includes background of bookkeeping office, industry profiles, entrepreneurial process and business model. Through interviews with bookkeeping office boss, we understand the insight of the bookkeeping industry. We learned that how a fresh man in bookkeeping, rebuffed everywhere, and help by seniors, persist in the way until now. After the process with the customer, there still exists lots of advance space. So, stick to individual posts to play good individual role. The second part of this case is the teaching manuals, which describe the teaching domain of this case and discussing problems. The purpose is let students to understand the nature, meanings and practical content of in bookkeeping office. Through operating items, operating procedures and marketing tactics, such as SWOT to analyze the utilizations, the implications and teaching reference in bookkeeping office.
